Abstract

This paper reports our work on the development of thin composite films based on aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) forest embedded in epoxy polymer matrix dedicated for 3D-interconnection in flexible substrate. To reach this goal, information about local CNT properties is strongly needed. In this study, aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube carpets were prepared by aerosol Assisted catalytical chemical vapor deposition (AA-CCVD) process. Such carpets were then embedded in a polymer matrix, subsequently thinned by chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process and finally treated by plasma process. Then, to determine local conducting properties of CNT, the surface of the composite film is studied by conductive AFM (C-AFM) and scanning spreading resistance microscopy. These methods are discussed and compared. C-AFM appears to be the most efficient method to obtain high resolution current maps. For the first time, a local electrical property mapping and current versus applied voltage characteristics over single carbon nanotube in vertical arrangement are obtained. These results show metallic behavior for nanotubes and emphasize that the electrical conduction is mainly driven by the external walls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present study deals with the application of high-performance-liquid-chromatography (HPLC) method for a quantitative detection of carnosine, anserine, L-histidine and 3-methyl-L-histidine in biological material with o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) post column derivatisation at the constant temperature of 50 degrees C. For this purpose, some mobile-phases were prepared with scalar acetonitrile concentrations. A complete separation of all molecules, particularly for carnosine and 3-methyl-L-histidine, was obtained with a solution of acetonitrile and 6mM hydrochloric acid with 0.48 M sodium chloride (5%:95% v/v). Post column derivatisation reaction at temperature of 50'C permitted to obtain an increase in sensibility of all molecules. This method has been utilised for detection of histidine dipeptides in boar spermatozoa and in sheep milk. Concentrations (mean +/- S.E. nmol/10(9) spermatozoa) of carnosine (0.96 +/- 0.14) and anserine (0.83 +/- 0.18) in boar spermatozoa were significantly lower than those of L-histidine (52.85 +/- 4.86) and 3-methyl-L-histidine (83.07 +/- 7.1). Positive correlation was found between carnosine and anserine contents (r = 0.740; p0.01) and between L-histidine and 3-methyl-L-histidine (r = 0.657; p0.01). All histidine dipeptides studied were also present in 40 samples of sheep milk. In a case of samples without unit-forming colonies (UFC) of Staphylococcus coagulase-positive, carnosine concentrations (9.17 +/- 0.89 nmol/ml) were higher than anserine (0.51 +/- 0.02 nmol/ml) and both were significantly lower in respect to L-histidine (49.51 +/- 6.48 nmol/ml) and 3-metyl-L-histidine (81.21 +/- 6.82 nmol/ml). A negative correlation was observed between carnosine milk levels (r = -0.773; p0.01) and UFC/ml of Staphylococcus coagulase-positive. In conclusion this very simple and fast method can be used to detect histidine dipeptides in biological compartments where their concentrations are very low.

Abstract

Abstract: In this work, Ba x Sr1−x TiO3 sol–gel thin films (x =0.7, 0.5 and 0.3) deposited on Pt/Si substrate and post-annealed at different temperatures have been investigated. A systematic study of the structure, microstructure and dielectric properties has been achieved for each composition. To our knowledge, for the first time, a systematic effect of post-deposition annealing temperature and composition is reported. For each Ba/Sr ratio, higher annealing temperature leads to crystallinity improvement and to grain growth. A shift of the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition toward the bulk Curie temperature with the increase of the annealing temperature is shown. These results are correlated with the increase of the permittivity, tunability and dielectric losses measured on MIM capacitors at low frequency. Moreover, the high frequency results, between 800MHz and 30GHz, are in very good agreement with low frequency measurements, and show a huge tunability up to 80% under 600kV/cm. 47. An Experimental Study on Antioxidant Enzyme Gene Expression in Trematomus newnesi ( Boulenger, 1902 ) Experimentally Exposed to Perfluoro-Octanoic Acid.

Abstract

Antarctica is the continent with the lowest local human impact; however, it is susceptible to pollution from external sources. Emerging pollutants such as perfluoroalkyl substances pose an increasing threat to this environment and therefore require more in-depth investigations to understand their environmental fate and biological impacts. The present study focuses on expression analysis at the transcriptional level of genes coding for four antioxidant enzymes ( sod1 , sod2 , gpx1 , and gpx4 ) in the liver and kidney of an Antarctic fish species, Trematomus newnesi ( Boulenger , 1902 ). mRNA levels were also assessed in fish exposed to 1.5 μg/L of perfluoro-octanoic acid for 10 days. The kidney showed a higher level of expression than the liver in wildlife specimens. In the liver, the treatment induced an increase in gene expression for all the considered enzymes, whereas in the kidney, it induced a general decrease. The obtained results advance the scientific community's understanding of how the potential future presence of anthropogenic contaminants in the Southern Ocean can affect the antioxidant system of Antarctic fishes. The presence of pollutants belonging to the perfluoroalkyl substances in the Southern Ocean needs to be continuously monitored in parallel with this type of research.

Abstract

Metal bioaccumulation and metallothionein (MT) expression were investigated in the gills and liver of the red-blooded Antarctic teleost Trematomus hansoni to evaluate the possibility for this species to face, with adequate physiological responses, an increase of copper and cadmium concentrations in its tissues. Specimens of this Antarctic fish were collected from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) and used for a metal exposure experiment in controlled laboratory conditions. The two treatments led to a significant accumulation of both metals and increased gene transcription only for the MT-1. The biosynthesis of MTs was verified especially in specimens exposed to Cd, but most of these proteins were soon oxidized, probably because they were involved in cell protection against oxidative stress risk by scavenging reactive oxygen species. The obtained data highlighted the phenotypic plasticity of T. hansoni , a species that evolved in an environment characterized by naturally high concentrations of Cu and Cd, and maybe the possibility for the Antarctic fish to face the challenges of a world that is becoming more toxic every day.

49. Brief note about plasma catecholamines kinetics and submaximal exercise in untrained standardbreds.

Abstract

Four untrained standardbred horses performed a standardized exercise test on the treadmill and an automated blood collection system programmed to obtain blood samples every 15 s was used for blood collection in order to evaluate the kinetics of adrenaline and noradrenaline. The highest average values obtained for adrenaline and noradrenaline were 15.0 +/- 3.0 and 15.8 +/- 2.8 nmol/l respectively, with exponential accumulation of adrenaline (r = 0.977) and noradrenaline (r = 0.976) during the test. Analysis of the correlation between noradrenaline and adrenaline for each phase of the test shows that correlation coefficient decreases as the intensity of exercise increases (from r = 0.909 to r = 0.788). This suggests that during submaximal exercise, the process for release, distribution and clearance of adrenaline into blood circulation differs from that of noradrenaline.
