Wheelchair rugby was created as part of the rehabilitation for patients with spinal cord injury. The biomechanical analysis of wheelchair propulsion (WP) in these athletes seems to be a key element to understand the reasons behind musculoskeletal injuries. This case reports study aimed to describe the electromyographic activity and kinematic parameters of the shoulder during the propulsion phases on the wheelchair in two Paralympic rugby players (A1 and A2) with spinal cord injury. Myoelectric activity (three portions of the deltoid, biceps and triceps brachii) and kinematics of the shoulder were assessed during the push (PP) and recovery (RP) phases. These variables were calculated considering ten propulsion cycles by each athlete. The results showed a different muscle activation between players, A1 described a high average amplitude of the anterior deltoid (PP = 58.44 ± 16.35%MVC; RP = 43.16 ± 13.48%MVC) in both propulsion phases, while A2 generated high average activity of triceps brachii (29.28 ± 10.63%MVC) and middle deltoid (46.53 ± 14.48%MVC), during PP and RP, respectively. At the same time, the player with a C7-T1 spinal cord injury (A2) showed a higher range of motion in the three plans, considering both propulsion phases.

The immediate referral of patients with risk factors for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) to specialized centers is recommended, thus favoring an early diagnosis and an interdisciplinary management. However, diagnostic errors are frequent, even in referral centers (RCs). We sought to evaluate the performance of the prenatal diagnosis for PAS in a Latin American hospital. A retrospective descriptive study including patients referred due to the suspicion of PAS was conducted. Data from the prenatal imaging studies were compared with the final diagnoses (intraoperative and/or histological). A total of 162 patients were included in the present study. The median gestational age at the time of the first PAS suspicious ultrasound was 29 weeks, but patients arrived at the PAS RC at 34 weeks. The frequency of false-positive results at referring hospitals was 68.5%. Sixty-nine patients underwent surgery based on the suspicion of PAS at 35 weeks, and there was a 28.9% false-positive rate at the RC. In 93 patients, the diagnosis of PAS was ruled out at the RC, with a 2.1% false-negative frequency. The prenatal diagnosis of PAS is better at the RC. However, even in these centers, false-positive results are common; therefore, the intraoperative confirmation of the diagnosis of PAS is essential. No entanto, erros diagnósticos são frequentes, mesmo em centros de referência (CRs). Buscou-se avaliar o desempenho do diagnóstico pré-natal para PAS em um hospital latino-americano. MéTODOS: Um estudo descritivo retrospectivo incluindo pacientes encaminhados por suspeita de SAP foi realizado. Os dados dos exames de imagem do pré-natal foram comparados com os diagnósticos finais (intraoperatórios e/ou histológicos). Foram incluídos 162 pacientes no presente estudo. A idade gestacional mediana no momento da primeira ultrassonografia suspeita de PAS foi de 29 semanas, mas as pacientes chegaram ao CR de PAS com 34 semanas. A frequência de resultados falso-positivos nos hospitais de referência foi de 68,5%. Sessenta e nove pacientes foram operadas com base na suspeita de PAS com 35 semanas e houve 28,9% de falso-positivos no CR. Em 93 pacientes, o diagnóstico de PAS foi descartado no CR, com frequência de falso-negativos de 2,1%. CONCLUSãO: O diagnóstico pré-natal de PAS é melhor no CR. Entretanto, mesmo nestes centros, resultados falso-positivos são comuns; portanto, a confirmação intraoperatória do diagnóstico de SAP é essencial.

En este Boletín Técnico son detallados los conceptos y fundamentos teóricos, utilizados en la construcción del modelo, el proceso de evaluación de su estructura, el proceso de validación, como herramienta para describir el comportamiento de la infestación causada por la broca del café y finalmente se ilustra la aplicación del modelo para la construcción de mapas de riesgo.

Objective Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a cause of massive obstetric hemorrhage and maternal mortality. The application of family-centered delivery techniques (FCDTs) during surgery to treat this disease is infrequent. We evaluate the implementation of FCDTs during PAS surgeries. Methods This was a prospective, descriptive study that included PAS patients undergoing surgical management over a 12-month period. The patients were divided according to whether FCDTs were applied (group 1) or not (group 2), and the clinical outcomes were measured. In addition, hospital anesthesiologists were surveyed to evaluate their opinions regarding the implementation of FCDTs during the surgical management of PAS. Results Thirteen patients with PAS were included. The implementation of FCDTs during birth was possible in 53.8% of the patients. The presence of a companion during surgery and skin-to-skin contact did not hinder interdisciplinary management in any case. Conclusion Implementation of FCDTs during PAS care is possible in selected patients at centers with experience in managing this disease. Resumo Objetivo O espectro da placenta acreta (do inglês placenta accreta spectrum - PAS) é causa de hemorragia obstétrica maciça e mortalidade materna. A aplicação de técnicas de parto centrado na família (do inglês family-centered delivery techniques - FCDTs) durante a cirurgia para tratar esta doença é pouco frequente. Avaliamos a implementação das FCDTs durante as cirurgias do PAS. Métodos Estudo prospectivo e descritivo que incluiu pacientes com PAS submetidos a tratamento cirúrgico durante um período de 12 meses. Os pacientes foram divididos de acordo com a aplicação de FCDTs (grupo 1) ou não (grupo 2), e os resultados clínicos foram medidos. Além disso, anestesiologistas hospitalares foram entrevistados para avaliar suas opiniões sobre a implementação das FCDTs durante o manejo cirúrgico do PAS. Resultados Foram incluídos 13 pacientes com PAS. A implementação de FCDTs durante o parto foi possível em 53,8% das pacientes. A presença do acompanhante durante a cirurgia e o contato pele a pele não prejudicou o manejo interdisciplinar em nenhum caso. Conclusão A implementação de FCDTs durante o atendimento do PAS é possível em pacientes selecionados em centros com experiência no manejo dessa doença.

Con el fin de soportar recomendaciones que aporten al manejo integrado de la broca del café en Colombia, en el presente Avance Técnico se suministra información sobre la dispersión de los adultos del insecto durante el zoqueo, la recolección y el beneficio del café cereza, así como dentro de los cafetales en producción. Se presenta el seguimiento a los vuelos de la broca a través del tiempo y el proceso de colonización del insecto en lotes recién establecidos.

Insects and microbes have developed complex symbiotic relationships that evolutively and ecologically play beneficial roles for both, the symbiont and the host. In most Hemiptera insects, bacterial symbionts offer mainly nutritional, defense and reproductive roles and have promoted the adaptive radiation of several hemipteran phytophagous lineages. The tropical plant bug Monalonion velezangeli (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a polyphagous herbivore considered an important insect pest for several economically-relevant tropical crops; however, information about the composition of its bacterial microbiota was missing. In this study, we describe the diversity and structure of the bacterial microbiota in the nymph and adult life stages of M. velezangeli using Illumina high-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicons (meta-barcoding). We found that both insect life stages share a similar microbiota in terms of bacterial diversity and community structure. The intracellular symbiont Wolbachia (~92%) dominated the overall microbiome composition in these life stages, followed by the potential gut-associated bacteria genera Romboutsia (1.8%), Ignavibacterium (0.8) and Clostridium (0.70%) as the top most abundant taxa. The persistent presence of bacterial genera Romboutsia, Ignavibacterium, Clostridium, Paracoccus, Allobaculum, Methylobacterium, Sediminibacterium, Faecalibaculum, Faecalibacterium, Collinsella, Rothia and Sphingomonas may suggest these are members of the core microbiota and could play important biological roles for M. velezangeli. This data opens new questions and avenues to better understand the contribution of symbiotic bacteria in the biological performance of this insect pest and provide bases to explore other insect control methods.

Despite the important role that flower-visiting insects play in agricultural production, to date no studies have been conducted in Colombia on their role in coffee crops, although coffee is considered the most economically important agricultural crop countrywide. This study therefore aimed to quantify the abundance and richness of flower-visiting insects in coffee crops. A total of 28 lots were selected at five sites in northern, central, and southern Colombia. Thirty trees were selected per evaluation site and per plot and, over a 3-year period, samples of flower-visiting insects were collected daily, at three times of the day, during two flowering seasons per year, accounting for a total of 1,240 hours of observations. Insects were subsequently taxonomically identified, and the number of individuals and species as well as the diversity of order q were estimated. Functional diversity was also characterized in the case of the bee community. A total of 23,735 individuals belonging to 566 species were recorded; of these, 90 were bees, with native species being the most abundant during 10:30 and 13:00. Bees formed five functional groups, with corbiculate and long-tongued non-corbiculate bees being the most abundant and occupying the largest regions of the functional space. Potential pollinators in coffee crops areApis mellifera,Nannotrigona gaboi,Tetragonisca angustula,Geotrigonacf.tellurica, andPartamonacf.peckolti.Coffee crops host a broad diversity of flower visitors, especially bees, which could prove beneficial for coffee productivity in Colombia and contribute to maintaining plant species accompanying coffee cultivation in the country.

There are 3 treatment options for placenta accreta spectrum: cesarean delivery with hysterectomy, expectant management, and uterine-sparing surgical techniques. One-step conservative surgery is the most extensively described conservative surgical technique, and it has extensive evidence supporting its usefulness; however, few groups apply it, most likely because of the misconception that it is a complex procedure that requires extensive training and is applicable to only a few patients.This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing one-step conservative surgery in 4 placenta accreta spectrum reference hospitals and provided detailed steps for successfully applying this type of surgery.This was a multicenter, descriptive, prospective study that described the outcomes of patients with placenta accreta spectrum treated in 4 reference hospitals for this condition. The patients were divided into those managed with one-step conservative surgery and those managed with cesarean delivery and hysterectomy.Overall, 75 patients were included. One-step conservative surgery was possible in 85.3% of placenta accreta spectrum cases (64 patients). Intraoperative staging and placenta accreta spectrum topographic classification allowed for the selection of one-step conservative surgery candidates. The clinical outcomes of the 2 groups were similar, except for the frequency of transfusions (81.8% in the cesarean delivery and hysterectomy group vs 67.2% in the one-step conservative surgery group) and vascular interventions (27.3% in the cesarean delivery and hysterectomy group vs 4.7% in the one-step conservative surgery group), which were both higher in patients who underwent hysterectomy. In addition, the operation time was shorter in the one-step conservative surgery group (164.4 minutes vs 216.5 minutes).One-step conservative surgery is a valid procedure in most patients with placenta accreta spectrum. It is an applicable technique even in scenarios with limited resources. However, its safe application requires knowledge of the topographic classification and the application of intraoperative staging.

During coffee harvest, picked berries fall to the ground where they serve as a reservoir for the coffee berry borer (CBB) which then infest coffee berries on the trees. This study tested the effect of fallen CBB-infested coffee berries on the infestation of coffee trees (Coffea arabica). Three-year-old trees were treated with either 0, 1, 5, 10, 15, or 20 CBB-infested berries placed on the root vicinity. The CBB infestation of coffee trees was sampled every 30 days during 6 months for four coffee productive cycles. The experiment was set up at four different locations comprising different altitudes (1,218; 1,381; 1,470; and 1,700 m.a.s.l.) and the measurements were taken during 4 years where the climatic events of El Niño, La Niña, Neutral, and transitions El Niño/La Niña were present. The results show that CBB-infested berries left on the ground are a reservoir of CBB for 140 ± 8.2 days and infest developing healthy coffee berries. In a climate Neutral year, one CBB-infested ground berry left on the ground infested on average 590.2 ± 142.2 berries in coffee trees grown at 1,218 m.a.s.l. At the same altitude, one CBB-infested ground berry resulted in 151.5 ± 29.1 infested tree berries during La Niña year and 959.0 ± 89.6 during El Niño year. The CBB infestation was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with altitude (R2= 0.99 andR2= −0.96, respectively). This study highlights the importance of careful harvesting practices to prevent berries from falling to the ground, followed by ground sanitation to limit later infestation of the coffee crop.

Phymastichus coffea LaSalle (Hymenoptera:Eulophidae) is an adult endoparasitoid of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera:Curculionidae:Scolytinae), which has been introduced in many coffee producing countries as a biological control agent. To determine the effectiveness of P. coffea against H. hampei and environmental safety for release in Hawaii, we investigated the host selection and parasitism response of adult females to 43 different species of Coleoptera, including 23 Scolytinae (six Hypothenemus species and 17 others), and four additional Curculionidae. Non-target testing included Hawaiian endemic, exotic and beneficial coleopteran species. Using a no-choice laboratory bioassay, we demonstrated that P. coffea was only able to parasitize the target host H. hampei and four other adventive species of Hypothenemus: H. obscurus, H. seriatus, H. birmanus and H. crudiae. Hypothenemus hampei had the highest parasitism rate and shortest parasitoid development time of the five parasitized Hypothenemus spp. Parasitism and parasitoid emergence decreased with decreasing phylogenetic relatedness of the Hypothenemus spp. to H. hampei, and the most distantly related species, H. eruditus, was not parasitized. These results suggest that the risk of harmful non-target impacts is low because there are no native species of Hypothenemus in Hawaii, and P. coffea could be safely introduced for classical biological control of H. hampei in Hawaii.

Las hormigas presentes en los cafetales podrían estar ejerciendo un control natural de la broca del café (BDC), como es el caso de Hypothenemus hampei al depredar a las poblaciones de esta plaga, que quedan en frutos abandonados al final de cada cosecha. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la capacidad depredadora de dos especies de hormigas (Solenopis picea y Crematogaster crinosa) sobre la broca del café con un atrayente en experimentos de campo. Para cada especie, se establecieron diez unidades experimentales (UE) con diez granos de café infestados con broca. Los granos infestados fueron colocados dentro de una malla de anjeo y colgados en árboles de café con un nido de hormigas. Para atraer las hormigas hacia los granos brocados estos fueron asperjados con una solución atrayente. Como testigo absoluto se usaron los mismos tratamientos con exclusión de hormigas y como testigo relativo granos brocados sin atrayente. La tasa de depredación de S. picea después de 24 h fue de 78,3%, seguida por C. crinosa con 34,3 %. El cebo atrayente incrementó en un 22 % la atracción de hormigas y depredación de estados biológicos de broca en cada UE, frente al tratamiento no asperjado. Los resultados muestran que las especies de hormigas evaluadas redujeron las poblaciones residuales de H. hampei; S. picea más que C. crinosa.

Las cochinillas de las raíces del café o “palomillas” como son llamadas comúnmente, son insectos de hábitos fitófagos, que se alimentan de plantas tanto silvestres como cultivadas. En café, su importancia radica en los daños que causan a la planta cuando se alimentan de ella; con su aparato bucal picador-chupador succionan la savia y como consecuencia ocasionan clorosis, defoliación y en algunos casos muerte, especialmente en plantaciones menores a dos años de edad.

Introduction The main complication of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is massive bleeding. Endoarterial occlusion techniques have been incorporated into the management of this pathology. Our aim was to examine the endovascular practice patterns among PAS patients treated during a 9-year period in a low-middle income country in which an interdisciplinary group's technical skills were improved with the creation of a PAS team. Methodology A retrospective cohort study including all PAS patients treated from December 2011 to November 2020 was performed. We compared the clinical results obtained according to the type of endovascular device used (group 1, internal iliac artery occlusion balloons; group 2, resuscitative endovascular balloons of the aorta; group 3, no arterial balloons due to low risk of bleeding) and according to the year in which they were attended (reflects the PAS team level of experience). A fourth group of comparisons included the woman diagnosed during a cesarean delivery and treated in a nonprotocolized way. Results A total of 113 patients were included. The amount of blood loss decreased annually, with a median of 2,500 mL in 2014 (when endovascular occlusion balloons were used in all patients) and 1,394 mL in 2020 (when only 38.5% of the patients required arterial balloons). Group 3 patients (n = 16) had the lowest bleeding volume (1,245 mL) and operative time (173 minutes) of the entire population studied. Group 2 patients (n = 46) had a bleeding volume (mean, 1,700 mL) and transfusions frequency (34.8%) slightly lower than group 1 patients (n = 30) (mean of 2,000 mL and 50%, respectively). They also had lower hysterectomy frequency (63% vs. 76.7% in group 1) and surgical time (205 minutes vs. 275 in group 1) despite a similar frequency of confirmed PAS and S2 compromise. Conclusion Endovascular techniques used for bleeding control in PAS patients are less necessary as interdisciplinary groups improve their surgical and teamwork skills. En el departamento del Huila, desde el año 1998, la chamusquina del café Monalonion velezangeli ha ocasionado daños en el cultivo. Con el fin de anticipar la vigilancia fitosanitaria y proceder de manera oportuna con el control de este insecto, se establecieron las bases para proponer una alerta temprana. El procedimiento para asociar las variables de clima con la presencia de brotes afectados por el insecto fue: 1) identificar la altitud a partir de la cual se presenta la plaga, evaluando lotes de café a lo largo de dos transectos altitudinales; 2) comparar las variables de clima asociadas a la presencia de chamusquina entre predios del Huila, con y sin infestaciones, y 3) ajustar el criterio para determinar la variable de clima asociada con la presencia de la plaga. De acuerdo con los resultados de esta investigación, la chamusquina es una plaga que ataca árboles de café sembrados en altitudes superiores a 1.550 m, donde ocurren disminuciones hasta un promedio de 75% en la humedad relativa nocturna y posteriormente aumentan progresivamente. Así, la disminución en la humedad relativa nocturna sería el evento de alerta temprana, momento a partir del cual deberán tomarse acciones de monitoreo y control del insecto en los municipios y altitudes vulnerables del Huila.

The coffee berry borer (CBB) is one of the main coffee pests in the world including Colombia. This pest is difficult to manage because of its cryptic habits and the continuous availability of coffee fruits. Among the new management strategies being tested is the use of volatile compounds as insect repellents. In this work, the behavioral response of female adult CBBs to terpenes previously identified in the CBB-repellent plant species Lantana camara was evaluated. α-Terpinene, (R)-limonene, farnesene and β-caryophyllene terpenes were tested via a Y-tube olfactometer in which ripe coffee fruits were accompanied by terpenes at concentrations between 25 and 200 ppm. Only β-caryophyllene induced a significant and consistent CBB repellent effect at all tested doses. The protective effect of microencapsulated β-caryophyllene was then determined under laboratory conditions by incorporating the terpene in a colloidosome-gel system at 2.8 × 105 ng/h in the middle of coffee fruits with adult CBBs. The coffee fruits in turn presented a decrease in fruit infestation. Furthermore, the protection of coffee fruits when β-caryophyllene gels were hung in coffee trees was evaluated in the field; infestations were artificially induced by the use of raisins (CBB-infested old coffee fruits) placed on the ground. Compared with unprotected trees, the trees treated with caryophyllene gels exhibited a 33 to 45% lower degree of infestation. Taken together, the results show that β-caryophyllene is a promising compound for an integrated pest management (IPM) program in commercial coffee plantations.

Introduction: Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is an uncommon entity, with high morbidity. Its diagnosis is difficult and delays in management are frequent. We report a series of cases of CSP and analysis of the differences in the outcomes depending on the moment of pregnancy in which they are treated.Case report: Twelve patients with a diagnosis of CSP. Seven of them were diagnosed and treated in the first trimester, often required more than one type of management, but were not transfused or presented complications. The five patients diagnosed lately in the pregnancy, always required cesarean section and emergency hysterectomy, with massive bleeding, transfusions, urinary or vascular complications.Discussion: CSP can be complicated by abnormal placental invasion when pregnancy continuity is allowed. The ideal management is the termination of pregnancy shortly after the diagnosis is made. Our series highlights the diagnostic difficulties that lead to late treatment with frequent complications.Conclusion: It is essential to perform routine analysis of the site of implantation of the gestational sac in the first-trimester ultrasonography and the CSP suspected cases should be handled by interdisciplinary teams in experienced centers.

Prior to recommending insecticides to treat the coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei, it is valuable to know the mortality and repellency of these insecticides against adult insects or their impact on reproductive output. However, currently available methods assess adult mortality only, limiting the selection of novel insecticides with a different mode of action. In this work, different experimental methods were examined to identify the diverse effects on the CBB under laboratory conditions. For this, green coffee fruits (GFs) were collected and disinfected by immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution followed by UV light irradiation. In parallel, CBB adults from a colony were disinfected by immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution. To assess fruit protection (preinfestation), the fruits were placed in plastic boxes, and the insecticides were applied. Then, the CBB adults were released at a rate of two CBBs per GF. The GFs were left under controlled conditions to evaluate CBB infestation and survival after 1, 7, 15, and 21 days. To evaluate insecticide efficacy after CBB infestation (postinfestation), CBB adults were released to the GFs in a 2:1 ratio for 3 h at 21 °C. Infested fruits showing CBB adults with their abdomens partially exposed were selected and placed in 96-well racks, and the CBBs boring into the fruits were treated directly. After 20 days, the fruits were dissected, and the CBB biological stages inside each fruit were recorded.
