This article examines how maltreatment experienced by adolescents is related to school engagement. Maltreatment includes physical, mental, and sexual violence along with sexual harassment, neglect, and witnessing domestic violence. School engagement refers to the students' relationship to all activities in the school. It describes students' thoughts, activities and participation as well as their emotions in relation to school. Analysis is based on the Finnish School Health Promotion data (N = 155,299) and analyzed by linear regression analysis. Results indicate that adolescents' maltreatment experiences are related to school engagement, regardless of gender, age, family structure, or immigrant background. Maltreatment increases functional engagement and decreases emotional and cognitive engagement. These results thus confirm that maltreatment can also cause immersion in schoolwork. The results can be used to prevent lower school engagement and maltreatment of adolescents.

AbstractObjective Further validation of Brief Child Abuse Potential (BCAP) inventory, for setting the correct classification rate.Methods Data collection from potential abusers (n = 47), visiting in the hospital clinic meant for parents having special needs due to problems with alcohol and drugs connected to other evidence-based risk factors of child abuse. The risk level was compared between these 47 parents and previously collected data from 450 parents, representing general population.Results There were no differences between likely abusers and the general population. Among both groups, 6% had elevated abuse risk and there were no differences in appearance of dimensions including in the abuse scale.Conclusions Assuming child abuse based on known risk factors is not enough, when setting the correct classification rate. We need more accurate knowledge about the abuse, and the family life situation in general. However, assessing risk factors of child maltreatment systematically with the BCAP, can still serve as a fruitful basis of assessing parents’ needs and worries as the basis for providing support what they need.

The purpose of the study was to investigate parent-related risk factor combinations that explain family violence (FV), which refers to intimate partner violence and child maltreatment (CM). The data were collected from parents with a 4-year-old child using a nationwide retrospective cross-sectional survey conducted in Finland (FinChildren) (N = 10,737). The research questions were as follows: (a) How are parent-related risk factors associated with FV against children and the spouse? (b) How does the accumulation of parent-related risk factors within three risk factor clusters explain FV? Analyses were carried out using cross-tabulations with χ2 tests, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and binary logistic regression analyses. The risk factor clusters built based on the EFA were as follows: parental well-being, parent's childhood adversities, and parent's health. Our results indicated that even a single risk factor predicted the likelihood of FV. In the well-being risk factor cluster, the odds for the occurrence of FV in parents with one well-being risk factor were double (odds ratios [OR] = 2.21; confidence intervals [CI]: [1.99, 2.45]) and in parents with at least four risk factors was six times (OR = 6.05; CI: [4.48, 8.18]) compared to those with no risk factor. We concluded that (a) the more different risk factors parents had, the more likely they were to report FV and (b) the accumulation of risk factors for well-being contributes most to the occurrence of the risk of FV. As a result, we emphasize the importance of identifying families with concurrent risk factors. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious health problem worldwide but is often not identified by health services. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of healthcare patients and documentation compared to the baseline study (2008-2012). The sample (N = 798) consisted of visits to a central hospital in Finland that had been marked with the ICD-10 codes for assault (X85-Y09) and physical abuse (T74.1) during the years 2013-2017. The data was analyzed with content analysis. Among the IPV visits (n = 110), partner- or spouse-related perpetrator coding was poor (11%). Victims experienced multiple injuries, and the violence increased with female gender, alcohol, and nighttime. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) nursing has been identified as a crucial component in the IBD service delivery. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of IBD nursing care in Finland, and to identify areas that would benefit from further research. Tertiary IBD outpatient clinics nationwide were invited to participate in a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted using an electronic survey. The quality of IBD nursing services was assessed using the Nursing Care Quality in IBD (NCQ-IBD) evaluation tool. Of the 34 identified clinics, 27 participated (79.4%) in the study. The NCQ-IBD tool classifies the clinics in four categories, where A indicates the highest level of quality, and D the lowest. In this study, 26 clinics (96.3%) were classified at level C, and one clinic (3.7%) at level D. Nursing responsibilities in IBD management and informing the patients were at a high level of quality, whereas nursing research in IBD was at a low level. An IBD database (i.e. clinical IBD registry) was in use only in 10 clinics. Although training in the clinical aspects of IBD was readily available, there was a lack of training plans for IBD, and clinics seldom held an annual review of the IBD nursing activities and outcomes. There were very few clinics using structured indices and questionnaires, and only 16 clinics (59.3%) applied a written IBD protocol. Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child maltreatment (CM) – together referred to as family violence (FV) – often co‐occur. In Finland, public health nurses play an important role in identifying FV. They regularly meet families and assess children's health until the child turns seven. This nationwide retrospective cross‐sectional survey (FinChildren) aimed to describe and compare help and support needs in violent families from the perspectives of the parents of four‐year‐old children and public health nurses for advancing families' and professionals' collaboration in preventing FV. The data (N = 7476 families) included the responses of one parent from each family and public health nurses, caring for that certain family. The data analysis encompassed statistical methods. The results showed that 47.0% of the parents reported FV. The public health nurses assessed that 0.7% of the parents would have needed support for CM and 1.3% for IPV. They assessed that the parents involved in FV needed more support for their personal coping (p < 0.001) and intimate relationship (p < 0.017) compared with parents without FV. These parents were also found to have other support needs. We concluded that public health nurses recognise only a fraction of FV occurring in families. The purpose of this study was to describe public health nurses' assessment of the background factors of familicide, factors that promote or prevent identification of these factors and familicide‐related education. The researchers sought to provide information that would help public health nurses recognise and prevent family tragedies as well as the development of education. Public health nurses (n = 85) working at clinics in Finland were surveyed using an electronic questionnaire. The quantitative data was described through statistics and open questions were analysed using inductive content analysis. Approximately one‐third (33 per cent) of the nurses considered their ability to identify the background factors of familicide as very poor or poor, and most (87 per cent) felt that they needed additional training. The identification of background factors is hindered by a lack of both resources and multiprofessionalism, fragmentation of care conditions, fear, cultural challenges, and education inadequacies. Aim: To explore the impact of interprofessional education (IPE) on undergraduate nursing and medical students' knowledge, competence and targeted competence in diabetes care. Design: Mixed methods design. Methods: A voluntary IPE course of diabetes management was organized for nursing (n = 15) and medical (n = 15) students, who performed a diabetes knowledge test and self‐evaluation of diabetes competence before and after the course and were compared with non‐participating students. The participating students' focus‐group interviews were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: The IPE course improved nursing students' diabetes knowledge and self‐evaluated competence among nursing and medical students. The baseline differences in self‐evaluated competence between the groups disappeared. The non‐participating students evaluated their competence higher than the participants, though they scored lower or equally in the knowledge test. In conclusion, IPE showed potential in increasing students' self‐evaluated competence, motivation to learn more and nursing students' diabetes knowledge, offering better prospects for future interprofessional diabetes management.
