Archimedes LD Agahan1,3, Jenice Torres1, Graciana Fuentes-Páez1, Hernan Martínez-Osorio1, Antonio Orduña2, Margarita Calonge11Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Unit, Institute of Applied Ophthalmobiology (IOBA), 2Microbiology Department, University of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain; 3Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of the Philippines, Philippine General Hospital, Manila, PhilippinesObjective: To report the clinical features and management of seven cases of intraocular inflammation caused by Rickettsia infection and review published literature. Methods: Rickettsia conorii or Rickettsia spp. infection was diagnosed based on the following criteria: (1) positive serology according to the European Guidelines, (2) titer normalization after specific treatment, and (3) complete resolution of ophthalmic disease and accompanying symptoms after antibiotic therapy. Results: Seven patients were referred for uveitis of unknown etiology. All came from regions where Mediterranean spotted fever is prevalent. One patient met the European guidelines criteria for Rickettsia spp. infection, while the other six cases met the criteria for R. conorii infection. The main symptoms were visual loss, floaters, eye redness, photophobia, and ocular pain. Predominant ophthalmic signs included vasculitis, choroiditis, vitritis, and macular edema. All patients required antibiotic treatment that resulted in the remission of the infection. Doxycycline was the first choice and the only antibiotic used to treat four patients. One patient needed ciprofloxacin as a second antibiotic after not responding to doxycycline. Two patients had doxycycline as a second antibiotic after not responding primarily to sulfonamides (which had been given after 2–3 days of doxycycline gastric intolerance); one of these patients needed ciprofloxacin as a third antibiotic. Conclusion: Intraocular inflammation can occur as the main manifestation of Rickettsia conorii or Rickettsia spp. infection. It should be considered as a differential diagnosis for uveitis especially for patients living in countries where this infection is endemic in the world. Antibiotic treatment remains effective in the management of Rickettsia infection. Keywords: intraocular inflammation, Mediterranean spotted fever, Rickettsia conorii, uveitis

- Abstract
MEGARA is the new generation IFU and MOS optical spectrograph built for the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The project was developed by a consortium led by UCM (Spain) that also includes INAOE (Mexico), IAA-CSIC (Spain) and UPM (Spain). The instrument arrived to GTC on March 28th 2017 and was successfully integrated and commissioned at the telescope from May to August 2017. During the on-sky commissioning we demonstrated that MEGARA is a powerful and robust instrument that provides on-sky intermediate-to-high spectral resolutions RFWHM ~ 6,000, 12,000 and 20,000 at an unprecedented efficiency for these resolving powers in both its IFU and MOS modes. The IFU covers 12.5 x 11.3 arcsec 2 while the MOS mode allows observing up to 92 objects in a region of 3.5 x 3.5 arcmin 2 . In this paper we describe the instrument main subsystems, including the Folded-Cassegrain unit, the fiber link, the spectrograph, the cryostat, the detector and the control subsystems, and its performance numbers obtained during commissioning where the fulfillment of the instrument requirements is demonstrated. © 2018 SPIE.

- Abstract
On June 25th 2017, the new intermediate-resolution optical IFU and MOS of the 10.4-m GTC had its first light. As part of the tests carried out to verify the performance of the instrument in its two modes (IFU and MOS) and 18 spectral setups (identical number of VPHs with resolutions R=6000-20000 from 0.36 to 1 micron) a number of astronomical objects were observed. These observations show that MEGARA@GTC is called to fill a niche of high-throughput, intermediateresolution IFU and MOS observations of extremely-faint narrow-lined objects. Lyman-¿ absorbers, star-forming dwarfs or even weak absorptions in stellar spectra in our Galaxy or in the Local Group can now be explored to a new level. Thus, the versatility of MEGARA in terms of observing modes and spectral resolution and coverage will allow GTC to go beyond current observational limits in either depth or precision for all these objects. The results to be presented in this talk clearly demonstrate the potential of MEGARA in this regard. © 2018 SPIE.

- Abstract
MEGARA is the new integral field unit (IFU) and multi-object (MOS) spectrograph successfully commissioned at Gran Telescopio Canarias, in August 2017. MEGARA provides spectral resolutions R (fwhm) ~ 6000, 12000 and 20000, via volume phase holographic gratings, at very high efficiency in both IFU and MOS modes. In the case of MEGARA main optics and pupil elements optics, the surfaces in contact with air have an anti-reflective (AR) coatings to minimize the Fresnel losses at the interface glass-air. In this work we present the designs and calculation of the total throughput of the optical system based in the transmission measurements of the AR coated witness samples. The results reflect the benefits of having implemented customized AR coatings for the mean angle of incidence on each surface as the measured throughput was better than the requirements. We analyze the effects of the pupil elements AR coatings for each spectral configuration. © 2018 SPIE

One print or electronic copy may be made for personal use only. Systematic reproduction and distribution, duplication of any material in this paper for a fee or for commercial purposes, or modification of the content of the paper are prohibited., Proceedings of the VI Ground-based and Airborne Instrumentation for Astronomy Conference (Edinburgh, United Kingdom), MEGARA (Multi-Espectrógrafo en GTC de Alta Resolución para Astronomía) is an optical Integral-Field Unit (IFU) and Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) designed for the GTC 10.4m telescope in La Palma that is being built by a Consortium led by UCM (Spain) that also includes INAOE (Mexico), IAA-CSIC (Spain), and UPM (Spain). The instrument is currently finishing AIV and will be sent to GTC on November 2016 for its on-sky commissioning on April 2017. The MEGARA IFU fiber bundle (LCB) covers 12.5x11.3 arcsec2 with a spaxel size of 0.62 arcsec while the MEGARA MOS mode allows observing up to 92 objects in a region of 3.5x3.5 arcmin 2 around the IFU. The IFU and MOS modes of MEGARA will provide identical intermediate-to-high spectral resolutions (RFWHM∼6,000, 12,000 and 18,700, respectively for the low-, mid- and high-resolution Volume Phase Holographic gratings) in the range 3700-9800 ÄA. An x-y mechanism placed at the pseudo-slit position allows (1) exchanging between the two observing modes and (2) focusing the spectrograph for each VPH setup. The spectrograph is a collimator-camera system that has a total of 11 VPHs simultaneously available (out of the 18 VPHs designed and being built) that are placed in the pupil by means of a wheel and an insertion mechanism. The custom-made cryostat hosts a 4kx4k 15-μm CCD. The unique characteristics of MEGARA in terms of throughput and versatility and the unsurpassed collecting are of GTC make of this instrument the most efficient tool to date to analyze astrophysical objects at intermediate spectral resolutions. In these proceedings we present a summary of the instrument characteristics and the results from the AIV phase. All subsystems have been successfully integrated and the system-level AIV phase is progressing as expected

The ventilation effect and time in the bio-process of semi-solid grape bagasse on the indicating parameters of the biotransformation was evaluated. The process was carried out in a cylindrical packed bed batch bioreactor of 98 L of operation capacity, connected to a Rotameter and a compressor to measure the air flows: 30, 50, 80 and 140 L.min-1, during the aeration of 2 and 3 hours. The pH stayed between 7.34 and 8.41 during the process duration time. The air flow and the aeration time were adapted to obtain temperatures above 52ºC. Moisture stayed between 30 and 60%. From the variance analysis applied (a=0.05), it can be established that the effect caused by the air flow on the nitrogen content, the carbon content and C/N relationship did not depend on the aeration time selected. The air flow and the aeration times used affect the nitrogen content in the final product, contrary to the carbon content; on the other hand, the used air flow affected C/N relationship, whereas aeration times did not affect this relationship. Among all the air fluxes used, the conditions of 50 L.min-1 and 2 hours of aeration guaranteed the obtaining of a well product with minimum power consumption.

The total polyphenols content in white wine treated with chitin like adsorbent was evaluated. The wine was done with a grape must Vitis vinífera var. Malvasía, chitin-treated in laboratory from shrimp (Pennaeus vannamei) shells. The behavior of commercial chitin and potassium casseinate, commonly used like adsorbent in enology, was compared. The total polyphenols content, catechins, color, total acids, pH and ethanol were determined in wine obtained during the storage time for three months. The obtained results were analyzed under a split plot design, for a significance level of 1%, being observed a highly significant effect between the stabilizing ones and the storage time on the total polyphenols and catechins content. The wine treated with home made chitin showed the lower catechins content (1.06 mg.L¹), total polyphenols (206.82 mg.L-1) and color (absorb 420 nm, 0.1686), during the storage period, by supporting the chitin affinity with the phenolic compounds, especially catechins.

In this study the influence of the skin color (greenish-white, greenish-yellow and yellow) and of the extracting agent (HCl, H3PO4, H3PO4-(NaPO3) 6) on the pectin of the dry peel of passion fruit was analized. The content of pectin was determined through the method of acid hydrolysis under the following extracting conditions pH: 3.0, temperature: 90-95ºC heating period: 90 minutes. The quality of the pectin was evaluated by means of the analysis of the humidity, ashes, equivalent weight, metoxyle, anhydrouronic acid, esterification, gelling period, relative viscosity and infrared spectrum. The maximun yield of pectin obtained was 18,45% when H3PO4-(NaPO3) 6 was used as extracting agent; whereas in terms of quality the pectin was better when HCl was used as extracting agent, with a content of anhydrouronic acid and metoxyle of 78% and 9,9%, respectively. The peel of the passion fruit in the yellow state of ripeness showed the highest content of pectin and the greenish-white state of ripeness showed the best gelling properties. The IR spectrometry confirmed that the pectin was of a high metoxyle. The analysis of the minerals threw the following results: calcium 0,10 to 0,15%, magnesium 0,05 to 0,08% and sodium 0,02 to 0,04%. The pectin of passion fruit peel does not offer unusual characteristics that would point to some potential commercial disadvantage.

Recent years have witnessed progress in management of patients with dementia, thanks to implementation and development of brain imaging, especially funcional srudies to elucídate biochemical physiological and electrical properties. Differential diagnosis of cognitive disturbances will have a broader basis. Among functional studies, brain perfusión SPECT allows assessment of regional blood supply, through radiactive tracers which indirectly show metabolic activity and its alteration. This technique differentiates fearures of several types of dementia: Alzheimer, Vascular and fronto-temporal lesions, AIDS and Others. Additional ad vantages of SPECT are availability and reasonable cost.

- Abstract
In the past half-century, solid organ transplantation has become standard treatment for a variety of diseases. The technique of successful transplant operations has given rise to a whole range of ethical questions. Currently, the major ethical problems come out of the shortage of organs, which has motivated a host of efforts to increase organ supply, some of which are very controversial. The purpose of this essay is to explore some of the ethical issues involved in transplantation. The ethics of transplantation derives from a tension between bodily integrity and human solidarity. Several widely accepted bioethical principles are relevant to practices in transplantation. They include non-maleficence (avoiding harm), beneficence (producing benefit), autonomy (respecting personal choices), and justice (distributing benefits and burdens equitably). These principles require that some basic conditions should always be satisfied for an organ donation to be ethical. On the base of the principles discussed we conclude that organ donation is a noble act of human solidarity, therefore medical community as well as society should support this high value gift. However donation is a personal decision taken by the donor well informed and the consent given. To fully respect donor’s human dignity, the transplant should preserve the life and the integrity of the donor. While the sale of organs should be regarded as a reductive and instrumental use of the person, we strongly support an appropriate implementation of the educational pathway to obtain acts of personal and humanistic organ donation.
