Introduction: Dobšiná Ice Cave (Slovakia) has attracted the attention of many researchers since its discovery more than 150 years ago. Although the cave is located outside the high-mountain area, it hosts one of the largest volumes of underground perennial ice. The topographic mapping of this unique UNESCO Natural Heritage site has led to several historical surveys. In the last decades of rapid climate change, this natural formation has been subject to rapid changes that are dynamically affecting the shape of the ice body. Increased precipitation, the rise in year-round surface temperatures, and the gravity cause significant shape changes in the ice filling. Methods: This paper describes modern technological tools to comprehensively survey and evaluate interannual changes in both the floor and wall of the underground ice body. Technologies such as digital photogrammetry, in combination with precise digital tacheometry and terrestrial laser scanning, make it possible to detect ice accumulation and loss, including the effect of sublimation due to airflow, as well as sliding movements of the ice body to the lower part of the cave. To get a comprehensive model of the ice volume, geophysical methods (microgravimetry and ground penetrating radar) have been added to determine the thickness of the floor ice in the upper parts of the cave in the last 2 years. Results: Between 2018 and 2023, the ice volume in certain sections of the cave decreased by up to 667 m³, with notable reductions in ice thickness ranging from 0.3 to 0.9 m in areas like the Small Hall and Collapsed Dome. The study also detected dynamic changes, such as the widening of the ice tunnel by 20 cm in some sections, and a vertical ice wall in Ruffinyi's Corridor showed localized volume losses up to 9 m3 (between 2018 and 2023). Additional geophysical methods - microgravimetry and ground penetrating radar - revealed an average ice thickness ranging from 10 to 25 m. Discussion: The paper not only highlights the current technological possibilities but also points out the limitations of these technologies and then sets out solutions with a proposal of technological procedures for obtaining accurate geodetic and geophysical data. The calculation of the vertical derivatives of potential field methods can be carried out in a stable manner by Tikhonov regularization, but this procedure requires the appropriate selection of a regularization parameter. For this purpose, we introduce a criterion based on Morozov's discrepancy principle that uses a preliminary approximation given by the vertical derivative of the smoothed data. The smoothing may be performed by a physical or a mathematically based low‐pass filter. The filtered data are computed only for estimating the regularization parameter; once it is found, we evaluate the regularized vertical derivative from the original data (not from the smoothed one) in the frequency domain. We verified from experiments with noise‐corrupted synthetic data, as well as gravity and magnetic field data, that the regularized vertical derivative has about the same smoothness as the one obtained from filtered data, but true anomalies are more easily distinguished from noise and the shapes of the anomalies are better preserved. Gravimetry is a discipline of geophysics that deals with observation and interpretation of the earth gravity field. The acquired gravity data serve the study of the earth interior, be it the deep or the near surface one, by means of the inferred subsurface structural density distribution. The subsurface density structure is resolved by solving the gravimetric inverse problem. Diverse methods and approaches exist for solving this non-unique and ill-posed inverse problem. Here, we focused on those methods that do not pre-constrain the number or geometries of the density sources. We reviewed the historical development and the basic principles of the Growth inversion methodology, which belong to the methods based on the growth of the model density structure throughout an iterative exploration process. The process was based on testing and filling the cells of a subsurface domain partition with density contrasts through an iterative mixed weighted adjustment procedure. The procedure iteratively minimized the data misfit residuals jointly with minimizing the total anomalous mass of the model, which facilitated obtaining compact meaningful source bodies of the solution. The applicability of the Growth inversion approach in structural geophysical studies, in geodynamic studies, and in near surface gravimetric studies was reviewed and illustrated. This work also presented the first application of the Growth inversion tool to near surface microgravimetric data with the goal of seeking very shallow cavities in archeological prospection and environmental geophysics. Enhancing the detection accuracy of the edges of the geological features within the subsurface remains a significant objective in geophysical data interpretation. Despite numerous advancements, approaches stemming from the directional gradients of gravity and magnetic fields still grapple with challenges such as low-resolution outcomes and susceptibility to noise contamination. In this study, we introduce a novel filtering framework based on the total horizontal gradient and its derivatives, designed to yield more precise and coherent edges free from false boundaries or disruptive artifacts. Validation using synthetic Bishop complex magnetic and gravity datasets, alongside Tuangiao aeromagnetic data from Vietnam, substantiates the robustness and applicability of our modified approach. Furthermore, recognizing the inherent susceptibility of edge detection filters to noise contamination resulting from directional derivatives, we employ the recently developed modified non-local means (MNLM) algorithm to alleviate noise effects prior to the analysis of noisy synthetic and real datasets. Our findings confirm the efficacy of the proposed method in reducing false artifacts and identifying edges with heightened precision, positioning MHGA as a valuable alternative for processing potential field data. This paper analyzes the latest complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map of Slovakia in relation to geological architecture. The observed gravity field consists of regional and local gravity anomalies, as well as marked horizontal gravity gradients. The most remarkable regional feature on this map is the large field with low-density masses in the northern part of Central Slovakia (the so-called Western Carpathian gravity low), which is divided into two gravity sub-lows: the Outer and Inner Western Carpathian gravity low. The source of the first sub-low is the sediments of the Outer Western Carpathian flysch units, and the second one is a crust with prevailing granites and orthogneisses. It is suggested that this field is only the torso of the original one, which stretched along the entire length of Slovakia from the SW to the NE. However, in the youngest stages of tectonic development, the negative gravity anomalous field in the territory of West and East Slovakia changed to a positive one due to the thinning of the lithosphere and crust by the influence of asthenolithic masses from the mantle. The higher density masses in Central Slovakia south of the Carpathian gravity low are not caused only by asthenolithic action. The different tectonic segment with a predominance of metamorphic complexes and a higher average density, in comparison to the low-density granitized complexes in the north, also contributes to its manifestation. The boundary between these two segments in Central Slovakia is a linear and sharp tectonic zone and coincides with the extensive Pohorelá shear zone. Several local anomalies also occur on the complete Bouguer anomaly map, and they were also subjected to geological analysis. These include local areas with a predominance of heavier crust, such as the core mountains in western Slovakia, subvolcanic intrusions, metabasic complexes, and the Cadomian basements. Prominent horizontal gravity gradients reflect the tectonic interfaces (faults, shear zones) that originated mainly during the youngest period of the Western Carpathian tectonic development and were also interpreted. The faults shown in the complete Bouguer anomaly map were active mainly during the transpressional and extensional stage of the Neo-Alpine tectonic development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Examples of the application of microgravity mehtod for the detection of potentially hazardous (empty) underground cavities caused by the collapse of coal mines are presented. Within these areas some alteration by previous remediation activity had occurred. This was not documented earlier and, therefore, such alteration was often unknown prior to the current investigations. We show a successful application of microgravity, leading to the detection of an empty cavity, in close proximity to where concrete injection was earlier performed. This was subsequently verified thorugh measurements in a borehole. In contrast, two other examples delivered results where the microgravity data, along with signals from other geophysical methods, led to the interpretation that subsidence resulting in the formation of sinkholes had been in‐filled, and in these situations the detection of more recent cavities was considered to be unreliable. These results point to the conclusion that microgravity interpretation of cavities is an effective approach, but the success of this approach may be compromised at sites where remediation activity has already occurred; in such situations the approach should be supplemented by other geophysical methods. Interpretation and inversion of microgravity anomalies belong to important tasks of near-surface geophysics, mostly in cavities detection in engineering, environmental and archaeological applications. One of the mostly used concepts of inversion in applied gravimetry is based on the approximation of the model space by means of 2D or 3D elementary sources with the aim to estimate their densities by means of the solution of a corresponding linear equation system. There were published several approaches trying to obtain correct and realistic results, which describe real parameters of the sources. In the proposed contribution we analyse the properties of two additional functionals, which describe additional properties of the searched solution -- namely so-called L2-smoothing and minimum support focusing stabilizers. For the inversion itself, we have used the regularized conjugate gradient method. We have studied properties of these two stabilizers in the case of one synthetic model and one real-world dataset (microgravity data from St. Nicholas church in Trnava). Results have shown that proposed algorithm with the minimum support stabilizer can generate satisfactory model results, from which we can describe real geometry, dimensions and physical properties of interpreted cavitie [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
