Search

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) presents a unique environment for pulsar population studies due to its distinct star formation characteristics and proximity to the Milky Way. As part of the TRAPUM (TRAnsients and PUlsars with MeerKAT) Large Survey Project, we are using the core array of the MeerKAT radio telescope (MeerKAT) to conduct a targeted search of the LMC for radio pulsars at L -band frequencies, 856–1712 MHz. The excellent sensitivity of MeerKAT, coupled with a 2-h integration time, makes the survey 3 times more sensitive than previous LMC radio pulsar surveys. We report the results from the initial four survey pointings which have resulted in the discovery of seven new radio pulsars, increasing the LMC radio pulsar population by 30 per cent. The pulse periods of these new pulsars range from 278 to 1690 ms, and the highest dispersion measure is 254.20  |$\mathrm{ pc} \, \mathrm{ cm}^{-3}$|⁠. We searched for, but did not find any significant pulsed radio emission in a beam centred on the SN 1987A remnant, establishing an upper limit of 6.3  |$\mu \mathrm{ Jy}$| on its minimum flux density at 1400 MHz. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are effective in detecting low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs), especially in circular binary systems of supermassive black holes. To evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of PTAs in searching for GW parameter estimation, we use the Cramer-Rao lower bound to estimate the parameters of the Virgo source under various search conditions, including both evolving and non-evolving scenarios, as well as Earth and pulsar term searches, and only Earth term searches. The results show that the estimation accuracy of the inclination angle and GW strain is lower in the evolving condition than in the non-evolving condition because the two parameters participate in the evolving process. In addition, we find that the parameters estimable relates to signal-to-noise ratio, which is beneficial for reducing the dimensionality in the search process. In summary, our method serves as a reference for exploring lower parameter limits under different conditions and assists in assessing the optimization of parameter estimation in GW detection algorithms. Following a brief introduction to pulsars and how to intercept radio-frequency transmissions from them, this article describes the design and results of an amateur project aimed at detecting and validating the strongest pulsar in the northern celestial hemisphere, with only a modest back-garden radio telescope. Techniques are described to improve verification confidence for weak, low signal-to-noise ratio observations by closer tracking of pulsar pulse train properties and also to identify the strongest pulsar scintillation sequence in the recorded observation data. Pulsations from the Crab pulsar have been detected by the MAGIC telescopes at energies up to 1.5 TeV, and the pulsed emission from the Vela pulsar was detected by H.E.S.S. reaching tens of TeV. These discoveries, along with the proposed additional emission due to inverse Compton scattering at TeV energies, lead us to consider suitable candidates for detection with current and future extensive air show (EAS) experiments at very-high-energy (VHE; 0.1 |$-$| 100 TeV) ranges. Leveraging energy spectrum data from pulsars as observed by Fermi and Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and considering the sensitivities of both LHAASO and SWGO, this study evaluates their detectability and estimates the time required for their significant detection. Our results indicate that LHAASO could detect the Crab's pulsed signal within six years, while SWGO might detect Vela's signal within one year. Observations of the most energetic Fermi pulsars with EAS experiments will provide insight into the nature of VHE pulsar emissions, helping us to clarify the primary characteristics of VHE pulsars. We present the description and initial results of the TRAPUM (TRAnsients And PUlsars with MeerKAT) search for pulsars associated with supernova remnants (SNRs), pulsar wind nebulae, and unidentified TeV emission. The list of sources to be targeted includes a large number of well-known candidate pulsar locations but also new candidate SNRs identified using a range of criteria. Using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope, we use an interferometric beamforming technique to tile the potential pulsar locations with coherent beams which we search for radio pulsations, above a signal-to-noise of 9, down to an average flux density upper limit of 30  μ Jy. This limit is target-dependent due to the contribution of the sky and nebula to the system temperature. Coherent beams are arranged to overlap at their 50 per cent power radius, so the sensitivity to pulsars is not degraded by more than this amount, though realistically averages around 65 per cent if every location in the beam is considered. We report the discovery of two new pulsars; PSR J1831−0941 is an adolescent pulsar likely to be the plerionic engine of the candidate PWN G20.0+0.0, and PSR J1818−1502 appears to be an old and faint pulsar that we serendipitously discovered near the centre of a SNR already hosting a compact central object. We report the discovery of PSR J1646−4545, a 431 ms isolated pulsar, in the direction of the young massive cluster Westerlund 1. The pulsar was found in data taken between the years 2005 and 2010 with the "Murriyang" Parkes radio telescope in Australia. Thanks to the numerous detections of the pulsar, we were able to derive a phase-connected timing solution spanning the whole data set. This allowed us to precisely locate the pulsar at the border of the cluster and to measure its spin-down rate. The latter implies a characteristic age of ∼25 Myr, about twice as large as the estimated age of Westerlund 1. The age of PSR J1646−4545, together with its dispersion measure of ∼1029 pc cm−3, more than twice the value predicted by the two main galactic electron density models for Westerlund 1, makes the association of the pulsar with the cluster highly unlikely. We also report on ramifications from the presence of a magnetar in Westerlund 1 and the apparent lack of ordinary radio pulsars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report new radio timing solutions from a 3-yr observing campaign conducted with the MeerKAT and Murriyang telescopes for nine Small Magellanic Cloud pulsars, increasing the number of characterized rotation-powered extragalactic pulsars by 40 per cent. We can infer from our determined parameters that the pulsars are seemingly all isolated, that six are ordinary pulsars, and that three of the recent MeerKAT discoveries have a young characteristic age of under 100 kyr and have undergone a spin-up glitch. Two of the sources, PSRs J0040 |$-$| 7337 and J0048 |$-$| 7317, are energetic young pulsars with spin-down luminosities of the order of 10 |$^{36}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$|⁠. They both experienced a large glitch, with a change in frequency of about 30  |$\mu$| Hz, and a frequency derivative change of order |$-10^{-14}$|  Hz s |$^{-1}$|⁠. These glitches, the inferred glitch rate, and the properties of these pulsars (including potentially high inter-glitch braking indices) suggest these neutron stars might be Vela-like repeating glitchers and should be closely monitored in the future. The position and energetics of PSR J0048 |$-$| 7317 confirm it is powering a new pulsar wind nebula (PWN) detected as a radio continuum source; and similarly the association of PSR J0040 |$-$| 7337 with the PWN of supernova remnant (SNR) DEM S5 (for which we present a new Chandra image) is strengthened. Finally, PSR J0040 |$-$| 7335 is also contained within the same SNR but is a chance superposition. It has also been seen to glitch with a change of frequency of |$10^{-2}$|   |$\mu$| Hz. The sensitivity of the MeerKAT radio interferometer is an opportunity to probe deeper into the population of rare and faint extragalactic pulsars. The TRAPUM (TRAnsients and PUlsars with MeerKAT) collaboration has conducted a radio-domain search for accelerated pulsars and transients in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This partially targeted survey, performed at L band (856–1712 MHz) with the core array of the MeerKAT telescope in 2-h integrations, is twice as sensitive as the latest SMC radio pulsar survey. We report the discovery of seven new SMC pulsars, doubling this galaxy's radio pulsar population and increasing the total extragalactic population by nearly a quarter. We also carried out a search for accelerated millisecond pulsars in the SMC globular cluster NGC 121 using the full array of MeerKAT. This improved the previous upper limit on pulsed radio emission from this cluster by a factor of 6. Our discoveries reveal the first radio pulsar-PWN systems in the SMC, with only one such system previously known outside our Galaxy (the 'Crab pulsar twin' in the Large Magellanic Cloud, PSR J0540−6919). We associate the 59 ms pulsar discovery PSR J0040−7337, now the fastest spinning radio pulsar in the SMC, with the bow-shock Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) of supernova remnant DEM S5. We also present a new young pulsar with a 79 ms period, PSR J0048−7317, in a PWN recently discovered in a MeerKAT radio continuum image. Using the multibeam capability of MeerKAT, we localized our pulsar discoveries, and two previous Murriyang discoveries, to a positional uncertainty of a few arcseconds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Redbacks are millisecond pulsar binaries with low-mass, irradiated companions. These systems have a rich phenomenology that can be used to probe binary evolution models, pulsar wind physics, and the neutron star mass distribution. A number of high-confidence redback candidates have been identified through searches for variable optical and X-ray sources within the localization regions of unidentified but pulsar-like Fermi -LAT gamma-ray sources. However, these candidates remain unconfirmed until pulsations are detected. As part of the TRAPUM project, we searched for radio pulsations from six of these redback candidates with MeerKAT. We discovered three new radio millisecond pulsars, PSRs J0838−2827, J0955−3947, and J2333−5526, confirming their redback nature. PSR J0838−2827 remained undetected for 2 yr after our discovery despite repeated observations, likely due to evaporated material absorbing the radio emission for long periods of time. While, to our knowledge, this system has not undergone a transition to an accreting state, the disappearance, likely caused by extreme eclipses, illustrates the transient nature of spider pulsars and the heavy selection bias in uncovering their radio population. Radio timing enabled the detection of gamma-ray pulsations from all three pulsars, from which we obtained 15-yr timing solutions. All of these sources exhibit complex orbital period variations consistent with gravitational quadrupole moment variations in the companion stars. These timing solutions also constrain the binary mass ratios, allowing us to narrow down the pulsar masses. We find that PSR J2333−5526 may have a neutron star mass in excess of 2 M⊙. The broad-spectrum polarization and spectral characteristics of pulsars contain crucial information about the origin of their radio emission. These properties, together with pulsar flux density variations, can also be used to guide future surveys of radio pulsars and probe the Galactic interstellar medium. In this paper, we present studies of 18 pulsars at high Galactic latitudes using the Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver of the Parkes radio telescope. For these pulsars, we measured their wideband flux densities, spectral indices, and polarization fractions. We obtain seven new rotation measures (RMs) and refine the RMs of another ten pulsars. In this sample of pulsars, we observed significant variations in their flux densities, suggesting that previous shallow surveys were likely to miss a population of pulsars at high galactic latitude. Double neutron star (DNS) systems offer excellent opportunities to test gravity theories. We report the timing results of PSR J1901+0658, the first pulsar discovered in the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) Survey. Based on timing observations by FAST over 5 yr, we obtain the phase-coherent timing solution and derive the precise measurements of its position, spin parameters, orbital parameters, and dispersion measure. It has a period of 75.7 ms, a period derivative of 2.169(6) × 10−19 s s−1, and a characteristic age of 5.5 Gyr. This pulsar is in an orbit with a period of 14.45 d and an eccentricity of 0.366. One post-Keplerian parameter, periastron advance, has been well-measured as being 0.00531(9) deg yr−1, from which the total mass of this system is derived to be 2.79(7) M⊙. The pulsar has the mass upper limit of 1.68 M⊙, so the lower limit for the companion mass is 1.11 M⊙. Because PSR J1901+0658 is a partially recycled pulsar in an eccentric binary orbit with such a large companion mass, it should be in a DNS system according to the evolution history of the binary system. Ephemeral Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) must be powered by some of the most energetic processes in the Universe. That makes them highly interesting in their own right, and as precise probes for estimating cosmological parameters. This field thus poses a unique challenge: FRBs must be detected promptly and immediately localised and studied based only on that single millisecond-duration flash. The problem is that the burst occurrence is highly unpredictable and that their distance strongly suppresses their brightness. Since the discovery of FRBs in single-dish archival data in 2007, detection software has evolved tremendously. Pipelines now detect bursts in real time within a matter of seconds, operate on interferometers, buffer high-time and frequency resolution data, and issue real-time alerts to other observatories for rapid multi-wavelength follow-up. In this paper, we review the components that comprise a FRB search software pipeline, we discuss the proven techniques that were adopted from pulsar searches, we highlight newer, more efficient techniques for detecting FRBs, and we conclude by discussing the proposed novel future methodologies that may power the search for FRBs in the era of big data astronomy. With the surge in astronomical data volume, modern astronomical research faces significant challenges in data storage, processing, and access. The I/O bottleneck issue in astronomical data processing is particularly prominent, limiting the efficiency of data processing. To address this issue, this paper proposes a tiered storage algorithm based on the access characteristics of astronomical data. The C4.5 decision tree algorithm is employed as the foundation to implement an astronomical data access correlation algorithm. Additionally, a data copy migration strategy is designed based on tiered storage technology to achieve efficient data access. Preprocessing tests were conducted on 418GB NSRT (Nanshan Radio Telescope) formaldehyde spectral line data, showcasing that tiered storage can potentially reduce data processing time by up to 38.15%. Similarly, utilizing 802.2 GB data from FAST (Five- hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope) observations for pulsar search data processing tests, the tiered storage approach demonstrated a maximum reduction of 29.00% in data processing time. In concurrent testing of data processing workflows, the proposed astronomical data heat correlation algorithm in this paper achieved an average reduction of 17.78% in data processing time compared to centralized storage. Furthermore, in comparison to traditional heat algorithms, it reduced data processing time by 5.15%. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is positively correlated with the associativity between the algorithm and the processed data. The tiered storage algorithm based on the characteristics of astronomical data proposed in this paper is poised to provide algorithmic references for large-scale data processing in the field of astronomy in the future. The results of the analysis of 205 brightest sources ( mJy), which were found in the sky survey at the declination of the pulsar in the Crab Nebula, are presented. The survey was conducted at a frequency of 4.7 GHz using a three-beam radiometer complex installed in the focus of the Western Sector of the RATAN-600 radio telescope in 2018–2019. Based on the measurements taken and the data collected in the CATS astrophysical catalogs database, the radio spectra of the objects were constructed. For a quarter of all detected sources, data at frequencies above 4 GHz were obtained for the first time, and for the rest they were supplemented. The variability of radiation sources on the scales of the year, from days to months, has been studied. The greatest change in the radio flux was found in the blazar B2 1324 22. The search for daily variability was carried out for 26 of the brightest sources with an average value of mJy. All sources are identified with objects from optical and infrared catalogs. The search for pulsars in monitoring data obtained at the radio telescope Large Phased Array (LPA) at a frequency of 111 MHz was carried out. Daily round-the-clock observations were carried out for about 3000 d. The duration of the observation session for each direction in the sky was 3.5 min d−1. The search for pulsars was carried out using power spectra. To search for weak pulsars, power spectra were summed up. The expected increase in sensitivity was 35–40 times compared to observations in one session. In a blind search, 330 pulsars with regular radiation were detected, with periods (P) from 0.0333 to 3.7455 s and dispersion measures (DMs) up to 249 pc cm−3. 39 pulsars turned out to be new. Average profiles were obtained for six pulsars. The DMs for seven pulsars previously detected on the LPA have been clarified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The drift periods P 2 and P 3 were searched for using the summed power spectra of 41 pulsars observed at declinations from −9° to +42°. The power spectra of pulses with a given period, pulse width, and drift behaviour have been simulated, the applicability of such a method for estimating drift parameters is shown. For most pulsars, the distribution of harmonic amplitudes in the power spectra corresponds to the expected distribution for these pulsars without drift. At the same time, it was found that for a number of sources, the summed power spectra accumulated over a long period of time give the same drift parameters as those determined by other methods. For 11 pulsars we have defined or redefined the drift period P 2. For eight sources the drift period P 3 has been determined or redefined. The drift direction of subpulses was redefined for them. We report the results of a search for radio pulsars in five supernova remnants (SNRs) with the FAST telescope. The observations were made using the 19-beam receiver in "snapshot" mode. The integration time for each pointing was 10 min. We discovered a new pulsar, PSR J1845–0306, which has a spin period of 983.6 ms and a dispersion measure of 444.6 ± 2.0 cm−3⋅pc, in observations of SNR G29.6+0.1. To judge the association between the pulsar and the SNR, further verification is needed. We also re-detected some known pulsars in the data from SNRs G29.6+0.1 and G29.7–0.3. Observations of pulsar scintillation are among the few astrophysical probes of very small-scale (≲ au) phenomena in the interstellar medium (ISM). In particular, characterization of scintillation arcs, including their curvature and intensity distributions, can be related to interstellar turbulence and potentially overpressurized plasma in local ISM inhomogeneities, such as supernova remnants, H  ii regions, and bow shocks. Here we present a survey of eight pulsars conducted at the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), revealing a diverse range of scintillation arc characteristics at high sensitivity. These observations reveal more arcs than measured previously for our sample. At least nine arcs are observed toward B1929+10 at screen distances spanning |$\sim 90~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the pulsar's 361 pc path length to the observer. Four arcs are observed toward B0355+54, with one arc yielding a screen distance as close as ∼105 au (<1 pc) from either the pulsar or the observer. Several pulsars show highly truncated, low-curvature arcs that may be attributable to scattering near the pulsar. The scattering screen constraints are synthesized with continuum maps of the local ISM and other well-characterized pulsar scintillation arcs, yielding a three-dimensional view of the scattering media in context. The HTRU-S Low Latitude survey data within 1° of the Galactic Centre (GC) were searched for pulsars using the Fast Folding Algorithm (FFA). Unlike traditional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) pipelines, the FFA optimally folds the data for all possible periods over a given range, which is particularly advantageous for pulsars with low-duty cycles. For the first time, a search over acceleration was included in the FFA to improve its sensitivity to binary pulsars. The steps in dispersion measure (DM) and acceleration were optimized, resulting in a reduction of the number of trials by 86 per cent. This was achieved over a search period range from 0.6 to 432-s, i.e. 10 per cent of the observation time (4320s), with a maximum DM of 4000 pc cm−3 and an acceleration range of ±128 m s−2. The search resulted in the re-detections of four known pulsars, including a pulsar that was missed in the previous FFT processing of this survey. This result indicates that the FFA pipeline is more sensitive than the FFT pipeline used in the previous processing of the survey within our parameter range. Additionally, we discovered a 1.89-s pulsar, PSR J1746-2829, with a large DM, located 0.5 from the GC. Follow-up observations revealed that this pulsar has a relatively flat spectrum (α = −0.9 ± 0.1) and has a period derivative of ∼1.3 × 10−12 s s−1, implying a surface magnetic field of ∼5.2 × 1013 G and a characteristic age of ∼23 000 yr. While the period, spectral index, and surface magnetic field strength are similar to many radio magnetars, other characteristics such as high linear polarization are absent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pulsar system PSR J1023+0038 is a very interesting binary with radio millisecond pulsar and low-mass X-ray binary transitions, which depend on the stellar accretion process. We have used Kepler light curves with 1 minute cadence and TESS light curves with 2 minute cadence to study the flare properties of PSR J1023+0038. We detected 516 flare events in the K2 data and 84 flare events in the TESS survey data. We determined the flare rise and delay times, the flare durations and amplitudes, and flare energies. We obtained a value of the power-law index of 0.359 ± 0.023 between the flare energies and decay times, which is similar to the theoretically predicted value of 1/3. This in turn indicates that PSR J1023+0038 might be exhibiting physical mechanisms described by magnetic reconnection theory. Using the maximum likelihood estimation method, we also calculated the power-law index of the cumulative flare frequency distribution, finding 1.87 ± 0.27 for the Kepler data and 1.74 ± 0.29 for the TESS data. Meanwhile, we reduced six FAST observations of PSR J1023+0038 from 2019–2021 using a standard pulsar search procedure. We report that we detected a prompt signal with a period compatible with that found in previous observations of PSR J1023+0038. X-ray communication (XCOM) is an emerging laser communication technique for deep space applications. Traditional link acquisition of laser communications depends significantly on Earth support and shows little autonomy. For XCOM, a pulsar vector observation-based link acquisition method is proposed, which utilizes noncooperative pulsars in deep space as beacons to acquire absolute attitude information and accomplish link acquisition. Firstly, a pulsar vector observation model was established based on the coordinate definition of the X-ray detector and X-ray collimator model. Secondly, a modified "success-failure" pulsar vector search algorithm with two degrees of freedom was proposed to acquire the pulsar vector. With the pulsar vector and the relative attitude obtained from inertial sensors, the link acquisition pointing vector could be determined. Finally, the performance of the proposed method was evaluated using numerical experiments, and factors that influence the performance are discussed and analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2017 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz (λ = 1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT data sets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars—which typically exhibit steep emission spectra—are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the fast folding algorithm, and single-pulse searches targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission. We use the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction (≲2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region. During observations of the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot survey by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, varying subpulse drifting of PSR J1857+0057 is detected. The follow-up observation confirms the quasi-regular changes of the drifting rate about every 50 periods. We determine the drift rate D through a linear fit to the pulse-central longitudes of subpulses in a drifting band, and determine P 3 from the cross-points of two fitted lines at the zero longitude for two neighbouring drifting bands. The low frequency modulation of about every 50 periods is found on variations of not only pulse intensity but also drift parameters. In most of low frequency modulation cycles, the integrated pulse intensity I and the absolute drift rate | D | tend to increase first and then decrease, and the drifting periodicity P 3 varies just in the opposite. In addition, the phase-forward intensity-enhancement is observed in many modulation cycles. Based on our polarization data, the average position angle curve for pulses with a smaller | D | and larger P 3 is slightly steep in the leading edge of pulse profile compared with that of the fully averaged profile. We report five new fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered from the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST): FRB 20210126, FRB 20210208, FRB 20210705, FRB 20211005, and FRB 20220306. To date, no repeating bursts from these FRB sources have been detected in the follow-up monitoring observations, leading to their classification as potential one-off events. We obtain the basic parameters for these bursts, including position, dispersion measure, pulse width, spectral index, scattering time-scale, etc. The fluences and flux densities are generally lower in comparison to the values observed in one-off bursts discovered by other telescopes. Among the observed bursts, polarization data for four bursts were recorded during observations. Consequently, we obtain polarization profiles and Faraday rotation measures for these bursts. Timing observations are crucial for determining the basic parameters of newly discovered pulsars. Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) with the L-band 19-beam receiver covering the frequency range of 1.0–1.5 GHz, the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) Survey has discovered more than 600 faint pulsars with flux densities of only a few or a few tens of μJy at 1.25 GHz. To obtain accurate position, spin parameters and dispersion measure of a pulsar, and to calculate derived parameters such as the characteristic age and surface magnetic field, we collect available FAST pulsar data obtained either through targeted follow-up observations or through coincidental survey observations with one of the 19 beams of the receiver. From these data we obtain time of arrival (TOA) measurements for 30 newly discovered pulsars as well as for 13 known pulsars. We demonstrate that the TOA measurements acquired by the FAST from any beams of the receiver in any observation mode (e.g. the tracking mode or the snapshot mode) can be combined to get timing solutions. We update the ephemerides of 13 previously known pulsars and obtain the first phase-coherent timing results for 30 isolated pulsars discovered in the FAST GPPS Survey. Notably, PSR J1904+0853 is an isolated millisecond pulsar, PSR J1906+0757 is a disrupted recycled pulsar, and PSR J1856+0211 has a long period of 9.89 s that can constrain pulsar death lines. We report on a likelihood-stacking search for γ-ray pulsars at 362 high-latitude locations that coincide with known radio pulsar positions. We observe a stacked signal conservatively 2.5σ over the background. Stacking their likelihood profiles in spectral parameter space implies a pulsar-like spectral index and a characteristic flux a factor of 2 below the Fermi Large Area Telescope point-source sensitivity, assuming isotropic/unbeamed emission from all sample pulsars. The same procedures performed on empty control fields indicate that the pulsars as a population can be distinguished from the background with a Δ(TS) = 28, where TS refers to test statistic, at the peak location (or 4.8σ), and the stacked spectra of the control fields are distinctly softer than those of the pulsars. This study also probes a unique region of parameter space populated by low |$\dot{E}$| pulsars, most of which have no γ-ray ephemeris available, and is sensitive to high duty cycles. The Canadian Hydrogen Mapping Experiment (CHIME) is a radio telescope located in British Columbia, Canada. The large field of view allows CHIME/FRB to be an exceptional pulsar and rotating radio transient (RRAT) finding machine, despite saving only the metadata of incoming Galactic events. We have developed a pipeline to search for pulsar/RRAT candidates using density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (dbscan), a clustering algorithm. Follow-up observations are then scheduled with the more sensitive CHIME/Pulsar instrument capable of near-daily high-time resolution spectra observations. We have developed the CHIME/Pulsar Single Pulse Pipeline to automate the processing of CHIME/Pulsar search-mode data. We report the discovery of 21 new Galactic sources, with 14 RRATs, 6 isolated long-period pulsars, and 1 binary system. Owing to CHIME/Pulsar's observations, we have obtained timing solutions for 8 of the 14 RRATs along with all the regular pulsars and the binary system. Notably, we report that the binary system is in a long orbit of 412 d with a minimum companion mass of 0.1303 solar masses and no evidence of an optical companion within 10″ of the pulsar position. This highlights that working synergistically with CHIME/FRB's large survey volume CHIME/Pulsar can obtain arc second localizations for low-burst rate RRATs through pulsar timing. We find that the properties of our newly discovered RRATs are consistent with those of the presently known population. This study focuses on the crucial aspect of lossless compression for FAST pulsar search data. The deep generative model PixelCNN, stacking multiple masked convolutional layers, achieves neural network autoregressive modeling, making it one of the most excellent image density estimators. However, the local nature of convolutional networks causes PixelCNN to concentrate only on nearby information, neglecting important information at greater distances. Although deepening the network can broaden the receptive field, excessive depth can compromise model stability, leading to issues like gradient degradation. To address these challenges, this study combines causal attention modules with residual connections, proposing a residual causal attention module to enhance the PixelCNN model. This innovation not only resolves convergence problems arising from network deepening but also expands the receptive field. It facilitates the extraction of crucial image details while capturing the global structural information of the image, significantly enhancing the modeling capabilities for pulsar data. In the experiments, the model is trained and validated using the HTRU1 dataset. This study compares the average negative log-likelihood score with baseline models like the GMM, STM, and PixelCNN. The results demonstrate the superior performance of our model over other models. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is the world's largest radio telescope currently under construction, and will employ elaborate signal processing to detect new pulsars, i.e. highly magnetised rotating neutron stars. This paper addresses the acceleration of demanding computations for this pulsar search on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) using a new high-level design process based on OpenCL templates that is transferable to other scientific problems. The successful FPGA acceleration of large-scale scientific workloads requires custom architectures that fully exploit the parallel computing capabilities of modern reconfigurable hardware and are amenable to substantial design space exploration. OpenCL-based high-level synthesis toolchains, with their ability to express interconnected multi-kernel pipelines in a single source language, excel in this domain. However, the achievable performance strongly depends on how well the compiler can infer desirable hardware structures from the code. One key aspect to excellent performance is commonly the uninterrupted, high-bandwidth streaming of data into and through the design. This is difficult to achieve in complex designs when data order needs to be re-arranged, e.g. transposed. It is equally hard to pre-fetch and burst-load from DDR memory when reading occurs in non-trivial patterns. In this paper, we propose new approaches to these two problems that use OpenCL-based code templates. We demonstrate the practical benefits of these approaches with the acceleration of a key component in the SKA's pulsar search pipeline: the Fourier Domain Acceleration Search (FDAS) module. Using our proposed methodology, we are able to develop a more scalable FDAS accelerator architecture than previously possible. We explore its design space to eventually achieve a 10x throughput improvement over a prior, thoroughly optimised implementation in plain OpenCL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery of 37 pulsars from ∼ 20 yr old archival data of the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey using a new FFT-based search pipeline optimized for discovering narrow-duty cycle pulsars. When developing our pulsar search pipeline, we noticed that the signal-to-noise ratios of folded and optimized pulsars often exceeded that achieved in the spectral domain by a factor of two or greater, in particular for narrow duty cycle ones. Based on simulations, we verified that this is a feature of search codes that sum harmonics incoherently and found that many promising pulsar candidates are revealed when hundreds of candidates per beam even with modest spectral signal-to-noise ratios of S/N∼5–6 in higher-harmonic folds (up to 32 harmonics) are folded. Of these candidates, 37 were confirmed as new pulsars and a further 37 would have been new discoveries if our search strategies had been used at the time of their initial analysis. While 19 of these newly discovered pulsars have also been independently discovered in more recent pulsar surveys, 18 are exclusive to only the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey data. Some of the notable discoveries include: PSRs J1635−47 and J1739−31, which show pronounced high-frequency emission; PSRs J1655−40 and J1843−08 belong to the nulling/intermittent class of pulsars; and PSR J1636−51 is an interesting binary system in a ∼0.75 d orbit and shows hints of eclipsing behaviour – unusual given the 340 ms rotation period of the pulsar. Binary compact objects will be among the important sources for the future space-based gravitational wave detectors. Such binary compact objects include stellar massive binary black hole, binary neutron star, binary white dwarf and mixture of these compact objects. Regarding to the relatively low frequency, the gravitational interaction between the two objects of the binary is weak. Post-Newtonian approximation of general relativity is valid. Previous works about the waveform model for such binaries in the literature consider the dynamics for specific situations which involve detailed complicated matter dynamics between the two objects. We here take a different idea. We adopt the trick used in pulsar timing detection. For any gravity theories and any detailed complicated matter dynamics, the motion of the binary can always be described as a post-Keplerian expansion. And a post-Keplerian gravitational waveform model will be reduced. Instead of object masses, spins, matter's equation of state parameters and dynamical parameters beyond general relativity, the involved parameters in our post-Keplerian waveform model are the Keplerian orbit elements and their adiabatic variations. Respect to current planning space-based gravitational wave detectors including LISA, Taiji and Tianqin, we find that the involved waveform model parameters can be well determined. And consequently the detail matter dynamics of the binary can be studied then. For binary with purely gravitational interactions, gravity theory can be constrained well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The SKA pulsar search pipeline will be used for real time detection of pulsars. Modern radio telescopes, such as SKA will be generating petabytes of data in their full scale of operation. Hence, experience-based and data-driven algorithms are being investigated for applications, such as candidate detection. Here, we describe our findings from testing a state of the art object detection algorithm called Mask R-CNN to detect candidate signatures in the SKA pulsar search pipeline. We have trained the Mask R-CNN model to detect candidate images. A custom semi-auto annotation tool was developed and investigated to rapidly mark the regions of interest in large datasets. We have used a simulation dataset to train and build the candidate detection algorithm. A more detailed analysis is planned. While observations of the stationary component of pulsar radio signals have in many ways formed the basis of our understanding of radio pulsars, the statistical deviations of these signals contain information that has become increasingly relevant. Using high time–frequency resolution data from the MeerKAT telescope, we study the self-noise of the autocorrelation function of six radio pulsars. The self-noise of the autocorrelation function is used to investigate the statistics of the observed radio signals on nanosecond time-scales and for five pulsars it is found to deviate from the expected form for a Gaussian process. Comparing the measured distribution of the intensity fluctuations of the on-pulse window to simulated models, we find that a mixture model comprising a Gaussian process and a Bernoulli-sampled Gaussian process is able to produce the excess self-noise while also producing the observed distribution of intensities. The parameters of the mixture model describing the signals are estimated for three of the pulsars in our sample group. Studies of the statistics presented in this work provide observational information for constraining the numerous theories of pulsar radio emission mechanisms. The mixture model suggested in this work would produce excess timing residuals for high signal-to-noise ratio observations when compared to that expected for a Gaussian process. Additionally, the measure of spectral self-noise provides a means of separating Gaussian and non-Gaussian processes that provides a potential basis for the development of alternative pulsar detection algorithms. More than 100 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) have been discovered in radio observations of gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), but hundreds of pulsar-like sources remain unidentified. Here, we present the first results from the targeted survey of Fermi -LAT sources being performed by the Transients and Pulsars with MeerKAT (TRAPUM) Large Survey Project. We observed 79 sources identified as possible gamma-ray pulsar candidates by a Random Forest classification of unassociated sources from the 4FGL catalogue. Each source was observed for 10 min on two separate epochs using MeerKAT's L -band receiver (856–1712 MHz), with typical pulsed flux density sensitivities of |$\sim 100\, \mu$| Jy. Nine new MSPs were discovered, eight of which are in binary systems, including two eclipsing redbacks and one system, PSR J1526−2744, that appears to have a white dwarf companion in an unusually compact 5 h orbit. We obtained phase-connected timing solutions for two of these MSPs, enabling the detection of gamma-ray pulsations in the Fermi -LAT data. A follow-up search for continuous gravitational waves from PSR J1526−2744 in Advanced LIGO data using the resulting Fermi -LAT timing ephemeris yielded no detection, but sets an upper limit on the neutron star ellipticity of 2.45 × 10−8. We also detected X-ray emission from the redback PSR J1803−6707 in data from the first eROSITA all-sky survey, likely due to emission from an intrabinary shock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides analyses of the emission beam structure of 76 'B'-named pulsars within the Arecibo sky. Most of these objects are included in both the Gould & Lyne and LOFAR High Band surveys and thus complement our other works treating various parts of these populations. These comprise a further group of mostly well-studied pulsars within the Arecibo sky that we here treat similarly to those in Olszanski et al. – and extend our overall efforts to study all of the pulsars in both surveys. The analyses are based on observations made with the Arecibo Telescope at 327 MHz and 1.4 GHz. Many have been observed at frequencies down to 100 MHz using either LOFAR or the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory as well as a few with the Long Wavelength Array at lower frequencies. This work uses the Arecibo observations as a foundation for interpreting the low frequency profiles and emission-beam geometries. We attempt to build quantitative geometric emission-beam models using the core/double-cone topology, while reviewing the evidence of previous studies and arguments for previous classifications on these sources. These efforts were successful for all but two pulsars, and interesting new subpulse modulation patterns were identified in a number of the objects. This paper presents high-performance computing efforts with FPGA for the accelerated pulsar/transient search for the square kilometre array (SKA). Case studies are presented from within SKA and pathfinder telescopes highlighting future opportunities. It reviews the scenario that has shifted from offline processing of the radio telescope data to digitizing several hundreds/thousands of antenna outputs over huge bandwidths, forming several hundreds of beams, and processing the data in the SKA real-time pulsar search pipelines. A brief account of the different architectures of the accelerators, primarily, the new generation field programmable gate array-based accelerators, showing their critical roles to achieve high-performance computing and in handling the enormous data volume problems of the SKA is presented here. The search for pulsars outside the plane of the galaxy in an area of 300 sq. deg. was carried out with the LPA LPI antenna at 111 MHz, with a sensitivity 5 to 10 times better than that of previous surveys. The search was performed in the summed power spectra. With an accumulation time equivalent to 100 hours of continuous observations for each point of the area, 5 known pulsars were found with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) from 20 to 1300 in the first harmonic of the spectrum. Average profiles are obtained for the detected pulsars. Estimates are given for the peak and integrated flux densities of the found pulsars for individual sessions and for power spectra summed over 5.5 years, using the developed method based on measurements of harmonic heights in the power spectrum. No new pulsars were found in the area. Apparently, when searching for pulsars in the area, we approached the lower limit of the luminosity of second pulsars. We present the detection of 107 pulsars with interstellar scintillation arcs at 856–1712 MHz, observed with the MeerKAT Thousand Pulsar Array Programme. Scintillation arcs appear to be ubiquitous in clean, high S/N observations, their detection mainly limited by short observing durations and coarse frequency channel resolution. This led the survey to be sensitive to nearby, lightly scattered pulsars with high effective velocity – from a large proper motion, a screen nearby the pulsar, or a screen near the Earth. We measure the arc curvatures in all of our sources, which can be used to give an estimate of screen distances in pulsars with known proper motion, or an estimate of the proper motion. The short scintillation time-scale in J1731−4744 implies a scattering screen within 12 pc of the source, strongly suggesting the association between this pulsar and the supernova remnant RCW 114. We measure multiple parabolic arcs of five pulsars, all of which are weakly scintillating with high proper motion. Additionally, several sources show hints of inverted arclets suggesting scattering from anisotropic screens. Building on this work, further targeted MeerKAT observations of many of these pulsars will improve understanding of our local scattering environment and the origins of scintillation; annual scintillation curves would lead to robust screen distance measurements, and the evolution of arclets in time and frequency can constrain models of scintillation. The Pulsar Science Collaboratory (PSC) is a research project engaging high school students, teachers, and undergraduates in searching for pulsars in data collected using radio telescopes. The goals are to stimulate student interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers; prepare teachers to implement authentic research with students by training them within a professional scientific community; promote student use of information technologies; and assist the research community through pulsar discoveries. The learning is facilitated through online training, in-person workshops and camps, discussion forums, participation in capstone events, conferences, and so on. The PSC is powered by HUBzero, a platform for building science gateways, and combines analytical tools, community management, course components, and collaborations in one ecosystem. The participants gain access to radio astronomy data after successful completion of training workshops and passing a certification test. The Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager (CZTI) onboard AstroSat, an open detector above ∼ 100 keV, is a promising tool for the investigation of hard X-ray characteristics of γ -ray pulsars. A custom algorithm has been developed to detect pulsars from long integration (∼ years) of archival data, as reported by us earlier. Here, we extend this method in the analysis to include additional ∼ 20% of the CZTI pixels that were earlier ignored due to their lower gain values. Recent efforts have provided better and more secure calibration of these pixels, demonstrating their higher thresholds and extended energy range up to ∼ 1 MeV. Here, we use the additional information provided by these pixels, enabling the construction of pulse profiles over a larger energy range. We compare the profiles of the Crab pulsar at different sub-bands and show that the behavior is consistent with the extended energy coverage. As detailed spectroscopy over this full band remains difficult due to the limited count rate, we construct hardness ratios which, together with AstroSat mass model simulations, are able to constrain the power-law index of the radiation spectrum. We present our results for the phase-resolved spectrum of PSR J0534 + 2200 and for the total pulsed emission of PSR J1513−5908. The recovered photon indices are found to be accurate within ∼ 20 %. ∼ 6 % of all known pulsars have been observed to exhibit sudden spin-up events, known as glitches. For more than fifty years, these phenomena have played an important role in helping to understand pulsar (astro)physics. Based on the review of pulsar glitches search method, the progress made in observations in recent years is summarized, including the achievements obtained by Chinese telescopes. Glitching pulsars demonstrate great diversity of behaviours, which can be broadly classified into four categories: normal glitches, slow glitches, glitches with delayed spin-ups, and anti-glitches. The main models of glitches that have been proposed are reviewed and their implications for neutron star structure are critically examined regarding our current understanding. Furthermore, the correlations between glitches and emission changes, which suggest that magnetospheric state-change is linked to the pulsar-intrinsic processes, are also described and discussed in some detail. Pulses from 16 previously known rotating radio transients (RRATs) have been searched for with the 111 MHz daily monitoring program for 4 to 5.5 yr using the Large Phased Array (LPA) at Pushchino. The total number of pulses detected in such a long observation interval is only 90 for RRAT J0640+07, but is as high as 10 751 for RRAT J0302+22. The number and amplitude of pulses vary on time-scales from 6 to 20 months for RRATs J1336+33, J1404+11, J1848+15, J2051+12 and J2105+22, and the pulse number can increase by one or two orders of magnitude in active phases. Long-term trends are found for RRATs J0139+33 and J0302+22, which show a 2–3 times increase in detected pulse number over 1959 d. Some RRATs show annual variations in both pulse number and pulse amplitude. It is hard to explain all these variation time-scales by refractive scintillation on the interstellar medium. The annual and semi-annual variations are probably caused by scintillations on the inhomogeneous interplanetary plasma. Our data show that the number of observational sessions with no pulse detection over the threshold decreases exponentially with the length of pulse silence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The search for pulsars in a sample of pulsar candidates found based on a multi-year survey conducted with low (six channels; sampling 0.1s) time-frequency resolution on declinations −9° < δ < +42° was carried out with the Large Phased Array of the Lebedev Physical Institute (LPA LPI). LPA is a transit telescope operating at 111 MHz with a bandwidth of 2.5 MHz. Search, analysis and evidence of pulsar detection were carried out using a visualization programme of summed up power spectra obtained from the survey data with high (32 channels; sampling 12.5 ms) time-frequency resolution. 11 new pulsars with periods P 0 = 0.41–3.75 s and dispersion measure DM = 15–154 pc cm−3 have been discovered. In total, in the survey with a low-time-frequency resolution for the period 2016–2021 in a blind search 203 pulsars were found, among them 42 new and 161 known pulsars. It is shown that in the search on the data with high-time-frequency resolution accumulated over a time interval of seven years, pulsars with a flux density of 0.1–0.2 mJy at the frequency of 111 MHz can be detected. When searching for pulsars with regular (periodic) emission at declinations +21° < δ < +42o, all pulsars located outside the galactic plane having P 0 ≥ 0.5 s, DM ≤ 100 pc cm−3, and the flux density S ≥ 0.5 mJy can be detected. New classes of astronomical objects are often discovered serendipitously. The enormous data volumes produced by recent high-time resolution, radio-telescope surveys imply that efficient algorithms are required for a discovery. Such algorithms are usually tuned to detect specific, known sources. Existing data sets therefore likely contain unknown astronomical sources, which will remain undetected unless algorithms are developed that can detect a more diverse range of signals. We present the Single-dish PARKES data sets for finding the uneXpected (SPARKESX), a compilation of real and simulated high-time resolution observations. SPARKESX comprises three mock surveys from the Parkes ' Murriyang ' radio telescope. A broad selection of simulated and injected expected signals (such as pulsars and fast radio bursts), poorly characterized signals (plausible flare star signatures), and 'unknown unknowns' are generated for each survey. The goal of this challenge is to aid in the development of new algorithms that can detect a wide range of source types. We show how successful a typical pipeline based on the standard pulsar search software, presto , is at finding the injected signals. The pulsar detection survey has contributed to the study of celestial evolution by providing scientists with a large amount of observational data. In addition, the amount of data collected by the survey has grown exponentially, and there is a large class imbalance in the corresponding data. In this paper, we design a residual convolutional autoencoder (RCAE) based on the structure of the autoencoder, and combine with logistic regression (LR) to construct a network structure framework suitable for pulsar candidate identification. RCAE is used as the primary model to fit the data distribution of the non-pulsar sample, the process does not need to consider the positive and negative pulsar sample imbalance. LR is used as an auxiliary classification model to test the final results. The experimental results on the HTRU Medlat and PMPS-26k data sets show that the best performance is achieved without the use of data generation and complex enhancement methods. We present four new fast radio bursts discovered in a search of the Parkes 70-cm pulsar survey data archive for dispersed single pulses and bursts. We searched dispersion measures (DMs) ranging between 0 and 5000 pc cm−3 with the HEIMDALL and FETCH detection and classification algorithms. All four of the fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered have significantly larger widths (>50 ms) than almost all of the FRBs detected and catalogued to date. The large pulse widths are not dominated by interstellar scattering or dispersive smearing within channels. One of the FRBs has a DM of 3338 pc cm3, the largest measured for any FRB to date. These are also the first FRBs detected by any radio telescope so far, predating the Lorimer Burst by almost a decade. Our results suggest that pulsar survey archives remain important sources of previously undetected FRBs and that searches for FRBs on time-scales extending beyond ∼100 ms may reveal the presence of a larger population of wide-pulse FRBs. Two neutron star (NS)-black hole (BH) binaries, GW200105 and GW200115 found in the LIGO/Virgo O3b run have smaller BH mass of 6–9 M⊙, which is consistent with Population I and II origin. Our population synthesis simulations using 106 Population I and II binaries with appropriate initial parameters show consistent binary mass, event rate, no detection of radio pulsar (PSR), and BH binaries in our Galaxy so far. Especially, we found possible progenitors of GW200105 and GW200115, which were formed at redshift z  = 0.15 and z  = 1.6 with binary mass of |$(34\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot },\, 9.2\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot })$| and |$(23.7\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot },\, 10.6\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot })$|⁠ , respectively. The final masses of these binaries are |$(6.85\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot },\, 2.14\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot })$| and |$(6.04\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot },\, 1.31\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot })$| which look like |$(9.0_{-1.7}^{+1.7}\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot },\, 1.91_{-0.24}^{+0.33}\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot })$| of GW200105 and |$(5.9_{-2.5}^{+2.0}\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot },\, 1.44_{-0.29}^{+0.85}\,{\mathrm{ M}}_{\odot })$| of GW200115, respectively. We also estimate that 2.68–19.7 PSR–BH binaries in our Galaxy will be observed by SKA. The existence of NS–BHs in our Galaxy can be confirmed in future SKA era. Using the GW observation of NS–BH mergers and the radio observation of PSR–BHs in future, we can get more severe constraints on the NS–BH formation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Searching for periodic non-accelerated signals in the presence of ideal white noise using the fully phase-coherent fast-folding algorithm (FFA) is theoretically established as a more sensitive search method than the fast Fourier transform (FFT) search with incoherent harmonic summing. In this paper, we present a comparison of the performance of an FFA search implementation using RIPTIDE and an FFT search implementation using PRESTO, over a range of signal parameters with white noise and with real telescope noise from the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey with the upgraded GMRT (uGMRT). We find that the FFA search with appropriate de-reddening of the time series performs better than the FFT search with spectral whitening for long-period pulsars under real GHRSS noise conditions. We describe an FFA-search pipeline implemented for the GHRSS survey looking for pulsars over a period of 0.1â€"100 s and up to a dispersion measure of 500 pc cmâˆ'3. We processed GHRSS survey data covering ∼1500 deg2 of the sky with this pipeline. We re-detected 43 known pulsars with a better signal-to-noise ratio in the FFA search than in the FFT search. We also report the discovery of two new pulsars, including a long-period pulsar with a short duty cycle, using this FFA-search pipeline. A population of long-period pulsars with periods of several seconds or higher could help constrain the pulsar death line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
