Abstract

In this paper, a review of the most recent technologies for indium recovery from waste flat panel displays is provided. Differently from the other fractions obtained after primary dismantling (such as plastic casings, printed circuit boards, metallic fractions and the fluorescent lamps) which have assessed recycling routes, the indium-containing panels are currently not properly treated and indium recovery from this residual fraction at industrial scale is still a challenge. Indium has been included in a list of "critical raw materials" by the European Commission and its recovery from secondary sources is gaining increasing attention among the scientific community. Its recovery is mostly performed at laboratory scale via pyro- and hydrometallurgical techniques and a very few examples of pilot-plant solutions can be found in the available literature. FPDs represent a source of valuable materials: besides indium, they contain glass and the polarizing films, which recovery could lead to both economic and environmental advantages. Suggestions for improvement are here provided to close the loop of flat panel displays recycling, in accordance with the principles of Circular Economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this work red mud, a highly alkaline waste product generated during alumina production process, was valorised as a source of valuable metals and as an adsorbent material. A hydrometallurgical process was developed in order to recover titanium from red mud. By a leaching step with hydrochloric acid followed by ammonia precipitation and a further purification step by solvent extraction with Cyanex 301 using toluene as a solvent, quantitative recovery of titanium with a high purity level (> 95%) was achieved. Red mud adsorption properties were also tested for metal removal from aqueous solutions. The results showed the red mud potential in applications such as environmental remediation. The adsorption order was found to be: iron > lead > copper > manganese, zinc. Red mud can be thus potentially valorised both as a source of secondary titanium and as an adsorbent material, according to the principles of Circular Economy which promote waste reduction and the preservation of natural resources.

Abstract

In this paper the most recent advances in lithium iron phosphate batteries recycling are presented. After discharging operations and safe dismantling and pretreatments, the recovery of materials from the active materials is mainly performed via hydrometallurgical processes. Moreover, a significant number of works are currently being focused on direct regeneration processes. Both approaches are currently applied only at laboratory scale. The main challenges to be faced when dealing with upscaling these technologies (for example mechanic vs manual dismantling, valuable elements recovery strategy vs all-components recovery strategy) are here presented and discussed.

Abstract

In this paper a full recognition of the different materials and valuable metals constituting mobile phones was performed. To this aim, a sample of 20 end-of-life devices has been dismantled and quantitative and qualitative chemical composition of the individual components was determined. From dismantling operations, it was found that plastics, metals, electronic components, batteries and displays account for 33%, 11%, 23%, 24% and 9% respectively, as a weighted average. Plastic parts of each item were analyzed by spectroscopy and then classified according to the plastic polymer type; it was found that polymeric components of mobile phones were made of five polymers: acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polymethylmethacrylate and silicone. Electronic parts were leached by a twofold aqua regia treatment and the metal composition was determined: 15 elements were identified with concentration >0.2%. On the basis of these results, some considerations about the recycling context of end-of-life mobile phones were performed.

Abstract

Bromine and chlorine are almost ubiquitous in waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and the knowledge of their content in the plastic fraction is an essential step for proper end of life management. The aim of this study is to compare the following analytical methods: energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (ED-XRF), ion chromatography (IC), ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), and elemental analysis for the quantitative determination of chlorine and bromine in four real samples taken from different WEEE treatment plants, identifying the best analytical technique for waste management workers. Home-made plastic standard materials with known concentrations of chlorine or bromine have been used for calibration of ED-XRF and to test the techniques before the sample analysis. Results showed that IC and ISEs, based upon dissolution of the products of the sample combustion, have not always achieved a quantitative absorption of the analytes in the basic solutions and that bromine could be underestimated since several oxidation states occur after combustion. Elemental analysis designed for chlorine determination is subjected to strong interference from bromine and required frequent regeneration and recalibration of the measurement cell. The most reliable method seemed to be the non-destructive ED-XRF. Calibration with home-made standards, having a similar plastic matrix of the samples, enabled us to carry out quantitative determinations, which have been revealed to be satisfactorily accurate and precise. In all the analyzed samples a total concentration of chlorine and/or bromine between 0.6 and 4 w/w% was detected, compromising the feasibility of a mechanical recycling and suggesting the exploration of an alternative route for managing these plastic wastes.. © 2016 by the authors.

Abstract

The recovery of raw materials from waste represents a sustainable growth opportunity for those countries with limited mineral resources availability. A case study for an integrated approach to recover raw materials from spent fluorescent lamps is presented, with the aim of improving the current treatments which are only able to recover the glass fraction. In particular a hydrometallurgical process was developed to obtain valuable metals such antimony, copper, and rare earths (yttrium and europium). Grinded powders were leached with several inorganic acids, then antimony and copper were recovered by electrodeposition; Y and Eu were finally precipitated as oxalates. The precipitate was dissolved and the rare earths were separated by solvent extraction. This approach, based on the holistic view of all elements contained in an End–of–Life complex product, ensures both environmental and economic sustainability since it allows waste reduction and materials recovery. © 2015, Gh. Abstract

The increasing diffusion of Hi-tech complex products has raised the attention of scientific community towards their End of Life (EoL) treatment, both in terms of assuring an appropriate disposal, to avoid the dispersion of harmful substances, and at the aim of their exploitation as valuable sources of raw materials. Within this study an integrated approach for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) end of life treatment is proposed based on the integration of hydrometallurgy for metal recovery and pyrolysis for plastic fraction valorization, with a particular focus on EoL personal computers. An innovative hydrometallurgical process with limited environmental impact for the recycling of added value metals (Au, Ag, Cu, Sn, Pb) from printed circuit boards was developed and thermal technologies were investigated for the valorization of mixed plastic components. The results show metal recovery rates up to 99% and purity grade up to 99%. With reference to plastic valorization, the maximized production up to 95% w/w of both a liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon-based stream to be exploited as a fuel or as source of chemicals was achieved from WEEE plastic fractions. © 2015, Gh. Abstract

The effect of cropping system (conventional vs. organic) and soil tillage (conventional vs. reduced tillage) on the health potential of durum wheat grain as well as on semolina and pasta quality traits was investigated in a long-term field experiment. Total antioxidant capacity, total arabinoxylans, alkylresorcinols, yellow pigments and total phenolics, which were assessed in kernels, revealed differences between the two cultivation systems only in 2011, whereas in the 2010 rainy season, cropping management did not influence these compounds. Proteins and W index were higher in the conventional system, except for the exceptionally rainy years. In contrast, the quality of cooked spaghetti was comparable in both management systems. Soil tillage differently affected bioactive compounds but had no impact on semolina and pasta quality. Overall, climatic conditions was the major factor affecting the quality of durum wheat. 38. A comprehensive characterization of End-of-Life mobile phones for secondary material resources identification.

Abstract

In this paper a full recognition of the different materials and valuable metals constituting mobile phones was performed. To this aim, a sample of 20 end-of-life devices has been dismantled and quantitative and qualitative chemical composition of the individual components was determined. From dismantling operations, it was found that plastics, metals, electronic components, batteries and displays account for 33%, 11%, 23%, 24% and 9% respectively, as a weighted average. Plastic parts of each item were analyzed by spectroscopy and then classified according to the plastic polymer type; it was found that polymeric components of mobile phones were made of five polymers: acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polymethylmethacrylate and silicone. Electronic parts were leached by a twofold aqua regia treatment and the metal composition was determined: 15 elements were identified with concentration >0.2%.
