Cet article concerne les défis actuels pour la psychanalyse que constituent le genre et les incongruences de genre. En effet, bien que le terme genre soit de plus en plus utilisé, il reste un concept plus difficile à définir et à circonscrire qu'il n'y paraît au premier abord. Afin d'apporter un éclairage sur ces sujets, il sera exposé le changement au combien important, qu'est le passage du paradigme du syndrome transsexuel à celui de la santé transgenre. Cet exposé sera alors étayé par deux vignettes cliniques : celle de Claudia dont la transition s'inscrit dans un parcours transsexuel et celle de Rose dont la transition paraît plus s'apparenter à un parcours transgenre. Les vignettes cliniques de Claudia et de Rose permettent d'illustrer ce qui se rapporte à une manière différente d'appréhender la différence des sexes : entre une abstraction qui épouse les contours d'une différence des sexes conçue comme binaire pour Claudia, et un genre fluide pour Rose. Suite à ces remarques, il est proposé de revenir sur le concept de genre afin de mieux le cerner et de le concevoir, notamment dans sa rencontre clinique et théorique avec la psychanalyse. Le genre est alors conçu comme un concept frontière, renvoyant à un troisième corps social au croisement du sentiment personnel et subjectif et du sociopolitique. En référence à la narratologie, le genre est défini comme une construction personnelle et/ou collective visant à donner une cohérence à la différence des sexes, et étayé par une réalisation par la perception, aide possible à la liaison de l'excitation sexuelle associée aux questions relatives à la différence anatomique des sexes d'un point de vue psychanalytique, qui concerne autant l'analysant que le psychanalyste. This article is concerned with the current challenges to psychoanalysis that gender and gender discordance represent. Indeed, although the term gender is increasingly used, it remains a concept that is more difficult to define and circumscribe than it first appears. In order to shed light on these issues, the important shift from the transsexual syndrome paradigm to the transgender health paradigm will be discussed. This presentation will then be supported by two clinical vignettes: that of Claudia, whose transition is part of a transsexual journey, and that of Rose, whose transition seems to be more akin to a transgender journey. Claudia's and Rose's stories allow us to illustrate a different way of apprehending the difference of the sexes: for Claudia, an abstraction that follows the contours of a difference of the sexes considered as binary, and, for Rose, a conception of gender as fluid. Following these reflections, it is suggested that we return to the concept of gender in order to better define and conceptualize it, particularly in its clinical and theoretical encounter with psychoanalysis. Gender is thus considered as a frontier concept, referring to a third social body at the crossroads of personal and subjective feeling and the socio-political. In reference to narratology, gender is defined as a personal and/or collective construction aiming to give coherence to the difference of the sexes and supported by a realization through perception. Gender can be thought of as an aide to the binding of sexual excitation associated with questions relating to the anatomical difference of the sexes from a psychoanalytical point of view, which concerns both the analysand and the psychoanalyst. In an interview created in 1981–1982, M. Masud R. Khan told of his background as a Muslim from a wealthy landed family in British India. He narrated how he came to London in his early twenties. He met with John Bowlby to inquire about receiving a psychoanalysis. Bowlby mistakenly thought he wanted to become a psychoanalyst. Intrigued by the idea, Khan ended up applying for training as a psychoanalyst and was accepted to and then completed the training course. The interview includes his anecdotes about Melanie Klein, Donald W. Winnicott, and Anna Freud. In his supervision with Klein, she provided some 'marvelous interpretations', he noted, but, in his view, she undervalued the analysands' personal experiences. Not only did he have an analysis with Winnicott, but he assisted Winnicott in the elder analyst's writing. Despite their long association, Khan claimed that he and Winnicott respected but disliked each other. Anna Freud generously helped Khan when he was ill. She also told him that her father, Sigmund Freud, largely gave up on friendships with men after his breaks with Carl Jung and Otto Rank and the death of Karl Abraham. This paper looks at the 2015 use of the Australian rock song Khe Sanh by far-right nationalist group Reclaim Australia and how it points to deeper archetypal dynamics at play, which are driving the appearance and behaviour of groups like this. Drawing from the work of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung, I treat the song as an expression of the archetype of the fallen hero, who confronts darkness but cannot reintegrate back into the social world and, instead, remains fallen. As I discuss, this song resonates deeply with Reclaim Australia members because it reflects their own ideological conceptions of their place in the changing Australian nation. I use a Jungian archetypal approach because it allows us to explore the underlying psychic structure and instinctive patterns that drive the behaviour of groups like this. Recognizing that psychoanalysis needs to change to meet the challenges described by the Holmes Report on American Psychoanalysis, the authors describe their journey to include socio-cultural perspectives in their teaching activities. To widen the lens of course content, they include topics of race, racial trauma, and inequality by bringing additional voices into their Self Psychology course materials including Beverly Stoute and Franz Fanon. AbstractBackgroundMethodsResultsConclusionNumerous clinical trials have supported psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) as a treatment for psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and substance use. While empirical evidence indicates PAT’s benefits, the perspectives of mental health practitioners on this topic remain unclear.This quantitative study attempted to capture psychoanalyst practitioners’ attitudes toward PAT. A sample of 130 graduate-level trained psychoanalysts in at least part-time clinical practice was recruited to participate in an online survey.The study found that psychoanalysts were cautiously supportive of PAT, open to their clients engaging in PAT, and optimistic about PAT’s potential in treating mental disorders. Additionally, they reported that PAT would be ineffective in treating substance use disorders (SUDs). Lastly, participants who reported a history of psychedelic use were significantly more likely to have greater positive attitudes toward PAT than those who had not.Results indicate the potential for misinformation about psychedelics and a lingering cultural stigma regarding the utility of psychedelics in the therapeutic environment among psychoanalysts. Therefore, education on the risks, potential benefits, and limitations of the evidence base of psychedelics and their effectiveness across psychiatric disorders appears warranted in the psychoanalytic community. Trauma is any overwhelming experience caused by exposure to a single or repeated life-threatening or distressing event(s) leaving imprints across mind, brain, and body and giving rise to many psychosomatic problems. The objective of this narrative review is to present the dream work method, Embodied Imagination (EI) developed by Jungian psychoanalyst, Robert Bosnak, as a method that can assist in alleviation of the effects of trauma. An overview of the fundamental components and theoretical underpinnings of the EI method are presented herein to demonstrate its suitability for trauma treatment. The neuroscientific findings, dream researches and principal ideas mentioned in the seminal work of Bessel van der Kolk, 'The Body Keeps the Score' forms the bedrock of this review. Relevant literature, both current and past is included to show support for EI, a psychotherapy modality which concentrates on dreams, imagination, physical sensations and emotions. This review calls attention to EI as a method that can facilitate the identification and integration of emotions and sensations, both interoceptive and exteroceptive, as well as the recognition of non-ego perspectives that exist beneath consciousness. The awareness and acknowledgment of new perspectives attained through EI bears significant implications for healing and alleviation of trauma. The implication even extends to the realm of brain plasticity wherein the new perspectives can activate new neural pathways facilitating transformations in emotions, associated thoughts, and memories. The author examines the archetype of the uroboros as it appears in the opening ceremony of a bush doof music festival. Within this rite, a womb-like state is created for participants through the use of darkness, bodily stillness, and the sonic dominance of low-end frequencies. This state is symbolically associated with the archetype of the uroboros as described by Jungian psychoanalyst Erich Neumann. This article examines the difficulties of making use of psychoanalytic insights to understand and influence political events. In clinical practice, it has often been possible to bring about understanding and change in patients, and in that context, immense developments in psychoanalytic theories and techniques have taken place. But there is no parallel tradition giving rise to the interpretation of unconscious political phenomena although there have been outstanding contributions of this kind by individuals, beginning with Freud's work on group psychology. There have been valuable psychoanalytic understandings of broad social changes, but effective interventions in "here and now" political situations have been few. Some examples of these include Keynes's understanding of the economic consequences of the peace of 1918 which were seen to be relevant mainly after the later peace of 1945 and Mitscherlichs' analysis in the1970s of the German people's "inability to mourn" the catastrophes of the Nazi period. This article addresses the place of society in Erich Fromm's pioneering psychoanalytic work and in the evolution of interpersonal theory and practice. It suggests that there is much to be gained from a re-examination of Fromm's politically progressive perspective. By bridging sociology and psychoanalysis, Fromm developed a new approach known as "social psychoanalysis," which sought to explain and understand the centrality of society in human experience and the therapeutic process. Fromm moved beyond Freud and found an ally in the American psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan. Together, Fromm and Sullivan became the key founders of the Interpersonal School of Psychoanalysis located at the William Alanson White Institute in New York. Despite their commonalities, however, Fromm and Sullivan differed in central areas, particularly on the issue of "adaptation" to society. Sullivan believed that adaptation was a marker of successful personality development and Fromm maintained that society inscribed pathology into the human being. This difference would prove definitive as interpersonal psychoanalysis moved from its radical beginnings to become a dominant school of contemporary psychoanalysis that focused on the interpersonal dyad and the interactions between the analyst and patient. This article aims to address the theories of Peirce and Freud with the objective of clarifying what is called ‘ethical conduct’. We do not establish a one-to-one correspondence between both theories, given that they have different concerns and paths, but we start from the conception that the isolated individual, enclosed in his dogmatic belief, whose neurotized behavior defines him, is a source of ignorance, in terms of the lack of social thinking or in terms of ignoring the cunning of their unconscious. Therefore, we use texts from the so-called first pragmatism, given that Peirce's discussion allows comparison between the problematic individual in Freud. As for the psychoanalyst, we worked on the texts of his Complete Works, selecting those that suited our intention, that is, that served to bring together two ways of conceiving the isolated individual. Indeed, for Peirce, the individual must yield to the opinion of the community of beings who think through signs, thus assuming a logical, rational attitude, and in accordance with the scientific method. In turn, the focus on psychoanalysis directs our attention to the unproductive individual, incapable of assuming a mature attitude, guided by the reality principle. Briefly, this is the individual trapped in the web of libido development in the pre-genital stage and without overcoming the Oedipus complex, a breakthrough that would make him ready to exist as a person, acting according to the principle of reality and knowing his limitations. The authors describe the journey of a group of psychoanalysts from the Società Italiana di Psicoanalisi della Relazione (SIPRe) that, from the 1980s to the present, has led to the hypothesis of a theory based on a unitary Subject in becoming. To the concept of Relation, understood not in a phenomenal sense but as structuring the psyche and individual behavior, were juxtaposed, with reference to the development of the human being, the moments of the Hegelian dialectic – thesis, antithesis and synthesis – understood as the passage from the prereflexive to the reflexive and the self-reflexive. From this initial reflection, we then came to distinguish between direct consciousness, characteristic of the first eighteen months of life, reflective consciousness, foundational to individual identity, and self-reflective consciousness, a capacity acquired by the human, which is expressed in the narrative of oneself made to oneself and others and refers to the perception of one’s own identity, based on unconscious determinants. In the group’s journey, these moments of development were articulated as co-present expressions of an ongoing process, leading to the formulation of the concept of the unitary Subject in Becoming: a system, always striving toward a beyond, that self-organizes and incessantly makes itself in relationship with the other, from a perspective that frames it as coinciding with its becoming. This response to Eyal Rozmarin's thoughtful and timely essay about Israel-Palestine attempts to take the conversation to its foundation: how do we hold a psychoanalytic conversation about Israel-Palestine? This question betrays our heretofore failure as psychoanalysts to engage psychoanalytically with Israel-Palestine. Drawing on her lived history with Israel-Palestine and her experience as a psychoanalyst, the author explores the obstacles to such engagement, in particular the impingement on the freedom to know, to think and to speak about Israel-Palestine historically and at present. This paper highlights the important contribution to psychoanalysis made by the psychoanalyst Karin Stephen. Following in the footsteps of other feminist biographers and historians of psychoanalysis, who have worked to bring 'Freud's women' out of the shadows, this article not only focuses on Karin Stephen's role within the internal political struggles of the British Psychoanalytical Society during the Second World War, but also shows how her psychoanalytic writings can be read in the context of her political activism in the 1930s. Beginning with a biographical account of Stephen's early life and marriage in October 1914 to Virginia Woolf's brother, Adrian Stephen, the paper goes on to explore the impact of Karin Stephen's political activism on her psychoanalytic writing. The article examines Stephen's arguments, in both her published and her unpublished writings, about the capacity for psychoanalysis to respond to the political crises of the 1930s and 1940s by offering patients freedom from servility to the 'raging dictator[s]' within and beyond the inner world of their minds. In 1985, British psychoanalyst Hanna Segal delivered the paper 'Silence is the Real Crime' to the first meeting of the group International Psychoanalysts Against Nuclear Weapons in Hamburg, appealing to her fellow analysts to counteract the denial of the geopolitical realities that characterized the late Cold War by intervening in public debates regarding the threat of nuclear war. A year later she gave a paper in London discussing clinical cases of patients who brought their nuclear anxieties to the couch. This article considers Segal's political and clinical writings on the psychological consequences of the atomic age, situating them in the context in which she was living, writing and practising as an analyst: 1980s Britain in a moment of 'nuclear anxiety'. I argue that Segal's anti-nuclear writings shed light on what she called the 'very very tricky' relationship between psychoanalysis and politics. Segal confronted the tension between maintaining clinical neutrality in the consulting room while publicly expressing her political commitments, wrestling with the complex relationships between individuals and the societies in which they live. Research on psychoanalysis and politics has traditionally focused on the emancipatory potential of psychoanalysis. The relationship between activism and psychoanalysis has been less extensively studied. There is a gap in the literature regarding the impact of collective action on psychoanalysis, including its theories, institutional policies, and clinical practices. This article aims to address the gap by analyzing the impact of the recent wave of Latin American intersectional feminist mobilizations on psychoanalysis. Through a multi-sited ethnography conducted with psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic organizations in Brazil, Chile, and Argentina in 2022 and 2023, I argue that intersectional feminist mobilization has influenced psychoanalysis through acts of citizenship that are expanding the boundaries of the psychoanalytic field. This impact is evinced by collective acts of defiance, the diffusion of feminist protest tactics, and the adoption of reactivation practices that challenge, reframe, and reconfigure psychoanalytic concepts. Self-Efficacy from Being-Touched What is self-efficacy? I would like to discuss this question using a clinical example. While using the case vignette, I first examine the life movements of the preverbal phase and distinguish receptivity from passivity. From an Adlerian perspective I distinguish the life movement of selfefficacy from ego activity. Being moved and touched is considered from the perspective of life phenomenology. From this philosophical perspective I study self-efficacy in the therapeutic approach of the Italian psychoanalyst Gianni Nebbiosi and develop a definition from it. Psychoanalytic theory and practice consider both transference and countertransference as cornerstones for understanding those complicated psychological phenomena which psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy bring to light. The relationship between a patient and a psychoanalyst has been the crucial point on which our attention and interest is focused. In the intersubjective space of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, all interactions between the patient and the analyst are considered to mutually influence each participant of the analytic dyad. Together with patients, clinicians get involved in ambiguous, uncanny and unavoidable enactments. The understanding of the latter requires from a psychoanalyst not only to contain the patient's anxiety and reflect on the patient's inner feelings but also to stay open to the gamut of feelings, anxieties and conflicts that arise from the professional's experience. I suggest that accomplishing the complicated task of understanding both the patient's and his own feelings and experience leads the analyst to the necessity of restoring links with himself. By means of clinical material, I make an attempt to show how the process of understanding an uncanny enactment becomes for the therapist a process of restoring the links in countertransference which, in turn, enables the therapist to interpret the patient's specific difficulties. Contrasting the work of French child psychoanalyst Françoise Dolto with that of American Relational theorist Jessica Benjamin yields significant shared sensibilities, notably regarding what was in Dolto's context a radical assertion of the small child as subject who needed to be considered as such, and the role of the parent's relating and communications in nurturing both subjectivity and agentic desire. However, Benjamin's writing makes clear not only that the parent's subjectivity is central to the child's affective experience, but the waysthe child's subjectivity takes shape in response to the mix of attunement, rupture, acknowledgment and repair. This makes parenting both riskier and more intimate; children can experience recognition that is inherently mutual, but are also more vulnerable to parental failures of both responsiveness and self-regulation. This text attempts to underscore the significant role of Francoise Dolto, the French child psychoanalyst, working with traumatized children during and after World War II. Being mostly known as a friend and colleague of Jacques Lacan, her own original clinical work was often overshadowed by the more prominent psychoanalysts on the French scene. Francoise Dolto could be considered as working in a relational mode, but more importantly, she truly put the concept of the symbolic to work, speaking to infants from the beginnings of their lives in an adult language, always invoking and including the instance of the law and the Third in her analytic work. The aim of this article is to present the work of the French child psychoanalyst Françoise Dolto (1908–1988) and to explore possible contributions to current debates in relational psychoanalysis. We present the historical and conceptual relationship between relational psychoanalysis and French psychoanalysis. Within this context, we will discuss certain key concepts (e.g., unconscious body image, need and desire, symbolic castrations) of Dolto who, in our view, provides an intersubjective understanding of the unconscious that resembles current relational approaches such as Jessica Benjamin's theory of recognition.
