Evidências de validade convergente são observadas à partir de estudos utilizando-se de variáveis externas que apresentem algum grau de relação. O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar tais evidências para o teste de Wartegg utilizando o Rorschach (R-PAS). Optou-se pelo emprego da análise de cluster visto que ela utiliza tanto do coeficiente alfa como do beta, tido como mais conservador, para a estimação dos agrupamentos das variáveis. Participaram do estudo 40 sujeitos divididos em dois grupos, sendo um composto por pacientes com diagnóstico de esquizofrenia e outro por sujeitos sem histórico de diagnóstico psiquiátrico. As idades variaram entre 21 e 70 anos (M=40; DP=12,8) sendo 36 sujeitos do sexo masculino. Os resultados indicaram 7 agrupamentos de itens, sendo 6 compostos por variáveis dos dois instrumentos. Além disso, verificou-se por meio da análise de regressão logística que um dos agrupamentos apresenta significância na predição do diagnóstico de esquizofrenia

O tema das altas habilidades/superdotação, no cenário da avaliação psicológica, tem se constituído um desafio, haja vista a sua multidimensionalidade. Nesse estudo buscou-se investigar a validade de construto da Bateria para Avaliação das Altas Habilidades. Participaram desta pesquisa 588 alunos do 2º ano do ensino fundamental ao 3º ano do ensino médio, ambos os sexos, divididos em grupo controle (N = 470) e grupo critério (N = 118), com média de idade de 11,11 anos. O instrumento foi composto por quatro subtestes de inteligência (Raciocínio Verbal, Abstrato, Numérico e Lógico) e dois subtestes de criatividade (Completando Figuras e Criação de Metáforas). Obteve-se através da análise fatorial exploratória, três fatores explicando 70,72% da variância total, representando uma medida de criatividade verbal, uma medida de inteligência e uma última, de criatividade figural. No geral, foram observadas correlações baixas entre os fatores. Conclui-se que o instrumento apresentou validade de construto para avaliação dos construtos envolvidos no fenômeno

Este estudo refere-se à precisão e validade de um instrumento de avaliação da criatividade por meio da produção de metáforas. A amostra foi de 124 estudantes universitários dos cursos de Psicologia, Letras, Administração de Recursos Humanos e Turismo. Os dados foram analisados verificando-se em termos de precisão, a consistência interna do instrumento e a adequação do seu sistema de correção, por intermédio de juízes independentes. A validade foi aferidas pela consistência interna e pela correlação do instrumento com duas atividades do teste chr(38)quot;Pensando Criativamente com Figuras e Palavraschr(38)quot;, versão brasileira. Os resultados indicaram existir, em termos de precisão, consistência interna para o instrumento e adequação do seu sistema de correção, e em termos de validade, observou-se evidências relacionadas à estrutura interna, com suas variáveis correlacionando-se uma com as outras e correlações positivas e significativas com as duas atividades do teste Pensando Criativamente com Figuras e Palavras, em especial a atividade verbal

Inteligência emocional é um construto que vem sendo pesquisado desde 1990 e sempre rodeado de muitas críticas quanto a sua existência. Uma dessas críticas levanta a questão se a inteligência emocional é de fato um novo construto ou por outro lado um novo nome para traços já estudados nas teorias da personalidade. Partindo desse questionamento o objetivo deste estudo foi investigar as relações entre esse construto e medidas de personalidade. Participaram do estudo 80 policiais do Estado de São Paulo. Para isso, foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos: Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) e o Método das Manchas de Tinta de Rorschach para avaliar traços característicos de funcionamento da personalidade. Os resultados indicaram que inteligência emocional e personalidade apresentam pouquíssimas correlações, sendo todas baixas e relacionadas por conteúdos emocionais existentes nas variáveis que se associaram. Os dados sustentam evidências positivas de validade divergente para o MSCEIT

A inteligência fluida (Gf) refere-se à capacidade geral de raciocínio em situações novas pouco estruturadas. Em termos de processo cognitivo subjacentes, estudos recentes apontam que a Gf está associada á memória de trabalho, especialmente às funções do executivo central, nomeadamente, coordenação simultânea de tarefas e atenção, seletiva/abstração. Esse estudo verificou a estrutura fatorial de um conjunto de itens de raciocínio analógico com figuras geométricas criados sistematicamente para representarem esses dois componentes do constructo. O instrumento é informatizado e composto por: (a) Pré-teste contendo doze problemas; (b) Fase de treino na qual são ensinados os componentes do processamento cognitivo e a estrutura geral dos problemas e (c) Pós-teste com mais doze problemas estruturalmente idênticos aos do pré-teste e com feedback, sobre a correção da resposta e três tentativas possíveis. Participaram 343 estudanetes universitários, 56,5% homens e 43,5% mulheres de cinco cursos: Administração (16,4%), Engenharia elétrica (17%), Engenharia mecânica (26,5%), Matemática (9,1%) e Psicologia (30,9%). Os alunos tinham entre 17 e 43 anos com média de 22,2 anos e desvio padrão 4,68. Os resultados da análise Full Information Factor Analysis indicaram a existência de três fatores, um agrupando itens do pré-teste, outro agrupando itens do pós-teste e um terceiro com itens mais difíceis destinados a medir o componente abstração. Os resultados indicam que a construção sistemática dos itens foi efetiva em separar os dois componentes da inteligência fluida assim como o formato dinâmico da avaliação foi efetivo para avaliar diferenças individuais em relação ao potencial de aprendizagem

Responding to the need for school-based, broadly applicable, low-cost, and brief assessments of socio-emotional skills, we describe the conceptual background and empirical development of the SENNA inventory and provide new psychometric information on its internal structure. Data were obtained through a computerized survey from 50,000 Brazilian students enrolled in public school grades 6 to 12, spread across the entire State of São Paulo. The SENNA inventory was designed to assess 18 particular skills (e.g., empathy, responsibility, tolerance of frustration, and social initiative), each operationalized by nine items that represent three types of items: three positively keyed trait-identity items, three negatively keyed identity items, and three (always positively keyed) self-efficacy items, totaling a set of 162 items. Results show that the 18 skill constructs empirically defined a higher-order structure that we interpret as the social-emotional Big Five, labeled as Engaging with Others, Amity, Self-Management, Emotional Regulation, and Open-Mindedness. The same five factors emerged whether we assessed the 18 skills with items representing (a) a trait-identity approach that emphasizes lived skills (what do I typically do?) or (b) a self-efficacy approach that emphasizes capability (how well can I do that?). Given that its target youth group is as young as 11 years old (grade 6), a population particularly prone to the response bias of acquiescence, SENNA is also equipped to correct for individual differences in acquiescence, which are shown to systematically bias results when not corrected.

What type of items, keyed positively or negatively, makes social-emotional skill or personality scales more valid? The present study examines the different criterion validities of true- and false-keyed items, before and after correction for acquiescence. The sample included 12,987 children and adolescents from 425 schools of the State of São Paulo Brazil (ages 11-18 attending grades 6-12). They answered a computerized 162-item questionnaire measuring 18 facets grouped into five broad domains of social-emotional skills, i.e.: Open-mindedness (O), Conscientious Self-Management (C), Engaging with others (E), Amity (A), and Negative-Emotion Regulation (N). All facet scales were fully balanced (3 true-keyed and 3 false-keyed items per facet). Criterion validity coefficients of scales composed of only true-keyed items versus only false-keyed items were compared. The criterion measure was a standardized achievement test of language and math ability. We found that coefficients were almost as twice as big for false-keyed items' scales than for true-keyed items' scales. After correcting for acquiescence coefficients became more similar. Acquiescence suppresses the criterion validity of unbalanced scales composed of true-keyed items. We conclude that balanced scales with pairs of true and false keyed items make a better scale in terms of internal structural and predictive validity.

This study investigated the application of item quadruplets to control social desirability in measuring socio-emotional competencies and their relationship with intelligence. Quadruplets involve four variations of an item, differing in the polarity of their descriptive content and evaluative content (social desirability): positive-desirable, negative-desirable, positive-undesirable, and negative-undesirable. The sample consisted of 431 individuals aged 18-67, predominantly female (71.1%). To control social desirability, items were manipulated in quadruplets. The results indicated a superior model fit when a general social desirability factor was estimated, with factor loadings reinforcing the presence of a general evaluative content factor. Additionally, controlling for this general factor led to more interpretable and enhanced loadings for the descriptive factors, affirming the hypothesis that controlling a general evaluative factor improves the theoretical congruence. The study also found negative correlations between intelligence and both social desirability and extroversion. The findings support the effectiveness of the quadruplets method in assessing social desirability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sex differences on the Attention Test (AC), the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM), and the Brazilian Cognitive Battery (BPR5), were investigated using four large samples (total N=6780), residing in the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The majority of samples used, which were obtained from educational settings, could be considered a nonprobability sampling. Females outperformed males on the AC (by 2 IQ points), whereas males slightly outperformed females on the SPM (by 1.5 IQ points). On the BPR5, sex differences favoring males were statistically significant (on average 6.2 IQ points). The largest difference was in Mechanical Reasoning (13 IQ points), and the smallest was in Spatial Reasoning (5 IQ points). In addition, two methods were adopted for determining whether sex differences existed at the level of general intelligence. First, a g factor score was estimated after principal axis factoring of test scores. Men had an advantage of 3.8 IQ points (statistically significant) on the g score, which was reduced to 2.7 IQ points (not significant), when the g score was estimated without including Mechanical Reasoning. Second, a confirmatory factor analysis approach was conducted that allowed testing of mean differences at the latent variable level. Again, sex differences favoring males were found (0.23 or 3.44 IQ points). Regarding educational and SES variables, some sex differences favoring males were found in the SPM and in the BPR5. In general, our results agree with studies that identify small, but consistent cognitive sex differences in reasoning tasks. Societal implications are discussed. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.

The development and validation of the Brazilian Temperament Scale for Students (BTSS) are examined through the use of data from 1,258 children and adolescents, ages 10 through 21 (M = 15.0, SD = 2.1, 56% females). Three psychometric properties of BTSS are reported: its internal structure (e.g., validity), its reliability, and cut points to best distinguish between the bipolar styles for each of the scale's four constructs (extroversion-introversion, practical-imaginative, thinking-feeling, and organized-flexible styles). Rasch analyses were used to estimate item intensity and students latent score parameters. The use of construct maps to help establish norms is described. The results of exploratory factor analysis using varimax rotation confirm the four scales' intended bipolar factors are composed of items that theoretically represent the desired constructs. The confirmatory factor analysis for a four-factor structure generally displays good fit indexes. Infit and outfit values reach acceptable ranges (i.e., from 0.68 to 1.32). Results are interpreted using cut points.

The association between fluid intelligence and inter-individual differences was investigated using multilevel growth curve modeling applied to data measuring intra-individual improvement on math achievement tests. A sample of 166 students (88 boys and 78 girls), ranging in age from 11 to 14 (M = 12.3, SD = 0.64), was tested. These individuals took four math achievement tests, which were vertically equated via Item Response Theory, at the beginning and end of the seventh and eighth grade. The cognitive abilities studied were Numerical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Spatial Reasoning (as measured by the Differential Reasoning Test). The general cognitive factor was significantly associated with the parameters of initial level (intercept) and rate of change (slope). A high level of intelligence was associated with higher initial scores, as well as a steeper rise in math scores across the two years. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)

Created two geometric inductive reasoning matrix tests by manipulating four sources of complexity orthogonally. Results for 313 undergraduates show that fluid intelligence is most strongly associated with the part of the central executive component of working memory that is related to controlled attention processing and selective encoding. O Governo Federal, através do Ministério da Educação, criou o Exame Nacional de Cursos (Provão), com objetivo de avaliar os diferentes cursos de graduação e apontar eventuais falhas na formação acadêmica de seus alunos. O primeiro Provão de Psicologia foi realizado em 2000 e desde então vem sendo realizado anualmente por todos os alunos de Psicologia que estão se formando. O propósito do presente trabalho é o de discutir se os dois objetivos dessa forma de avaliação - discriminar os diferentes cursos de Psicologia e apontar falhas na formação de seus alunos - vêm sendo alcançados. Inicialmente apresentamos alguns problemas encontrados no primeiro Provão de Psicologia realizado em 2000, bem como de suas possíveis conseqüências. Finalmente, o trabalho propõe sugestões para a melhora deste sistema de avaliação.

The overall aim of this study was to discuss the main innovations in psychological assessment made possible by the existence of social networks. More specifically, we characterize the practices (and weaknesses) of conventional psychological assessment, the most modern methods of computational psychometry and examples of applications of computational psychometry using data from social networks. In general, the conventional practices of psychological assessment of psychometrics were created in the 19th century and many of its practices, developed around the middle of the 20th century, continue to be used in a non-critical way. As an alternative, computational psychometrics, an approach to psychometrics that combines data-driven methods of computer science and psychometric theory, has been used to generate innovations in the area of assessment. Finally, we discuss some applications of computational psychometrics and how these innovations are likely to generate profound changes in the assessment context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
