Abstract

This paper of the fmr group (flows, matrices, networks) examines several issues regarding networks' graphical representation. After outlining the general principles of graphic semiology, this synthesis presents several families of algorithms (MDS, PCA, energy-based, etc..) and alternative representations (matrix blocked and mixed). Problems involved by large graphs' visualization are also discussed., Cette synthèse du groupe fmr (flux, matrices, réseaux) s'intéresse aux questions posées par la visualisation des réseaux. Après avoir rappelé les principes généraux de sémiologie graphique, cette synthèse présente plusieurs familles d'algorithmes (MDS, ACP, energy-based etc.) et de représentations alternatives (matrice bloquée et mixte). La question de la visualisation des grands graphes est également abordée.

Abstract

International audience, To improve the removal of hydrophobic Volatile Org. Compds. (VOC), an integrated process coupling an absorption step and a biol. treatment in a Two-Phase Partitioning Bioreactor was considered. A preliminary bibliog. review allowed to select a silicon oil (Polydimethylsiloxane),which appeared efficient for both steps, VOC absorption and biodegrdn., since this oil was biocompatible, non-biodegradable and had a negligible soly. in water. The purpose of this work was the implementation of this org. phase in the bioreactor. BOD5 measurements showed that a ratio ranging between 20 and 30% of silicone oil in water was found to be optimal for the treatment of DMDS, in relation with interfacial area considerations. For a small proportion of oil, the emulsion is homogeneous but the interfacial area is small; while for high ratios, the oil is not totally emulsified and hence the transfer appears limiting leading to decreasing substrate availability. Abstract

International audience, A methodol. for the design of absorbers contacting a gas phase loaded with hydrophobic VOC and two immiscible liq. phases (air/water/silicone oil) is presented. The design is based on a concept of mass transfer between phases called the "equiv. absorption capacity". It is demonstrated that VOC absorption should be restricted to pollutants characterized by an air/silicone oil partition coeff. around 3 to 4 Pa.m3.mol-1 or less. In this case, the gas-liq. mass transfer must be carried out between air and pure silicone oil, allowing a minimization of the diam. of the gas/liq. contactor. [on SciFinder(R)]

Abstract

International audience; This report describes five cases of double outlet right ventricle (DORV) in four dogs (aged 3-18 months, two males and two females) and a domestic shorthair cat (aged 6 months, female) who presented with various clinical signs including tachypnea (n = 5), exercise intolerance (n = 5), mucous cyanosis (n = 3), delayed growth (n = 2), and/or lethargy (n = 2). The represented canine breeds were poodle, Yorkshire terrier, Samoyed, and Shetland sheepdog. For all animals, echocardiography revealed marked aortic dextroposition with both arterial trunks totally arising from the right ventricle, associated with a ventricular septal defect and various other congenital abnormalities, including subvalvular aortic stenosis (n = 2), minor aortic insufficiency (n = 5), subvalvular pulmonic stenosis with pulmonary trunk hypoplasia (n = 1), patent ductus arteriosus (n = 1), minor mitral and/or tricuspid dysplasia (n = 3). Subsequent cardiac remodeling was characterized by marked right ventricular hypertrophy for all patients, associated with right ventricular and right atrial dilation for most of them (4/5). Two dogs died soon after the initial DORV diagnosis (i.e. after 24 h and two months). A surgical correction attempted for another dog confirmed the presence of a DORV associated with patent ductus arteriosus, but the animal died during the procedure from sudden cardiac arrest. The fourth dog underwent a contrast-enhanced retrospective electrocardiogram-gated multidetector computed tomography angiography under general anesthesia, which confirmed the conotruncal malformation. Despite episodes of exercise intolerance, this dog is still alive, at the age of 53 months, as is the cat at the age of 21 months.

Abstract

International audience; After its first description in Wuhan (China), SARS-CoV-2 the agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread worldwide. Previous studies suggested that pets could be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2. Here, we investigated the putative infection by SARS-CoV-2 in 22 cats and 11 dogs from owners previously infected or suspected of being infected by SARS-CoV-2. For each animal, rectal, nasopharyngeal swabs and serum were taken. Swabs were submitted to RT-qPCR assays targeting 2 genes of SARS-CoV-2. All dogs were tested SARS-CoV-2 negative. One cat was tested positive by RT-qPCR on rectal swab. Nasopharyngeal swabs from this animal were tested negative. This cat showed mild respiratory and digestive signs. Serological analysis confirms the presence of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 in both serum samples taken 10 days apart. Genome sequence analysis revealed that the cat SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the phylogenetic clade A2a like most of the French human SARS-CoV-2. This study reports for the first time the natural infection of a cat in France (near Paris) probably through their owners. There is currently no evidence that cats can spread COVID-19 and owners should not abandon their pets or compromise their welfare.

Abstract

International audience; Coastal dunes can move in response to winds and cause serious hazard to human assets. Changes in wind patterns, potentially occurring as a consequence of climate change or variability, could affect rates of aeolian transport and migration velocity of coastal dunes. Understanding the response of coastal dune mobility to changes in transport conditions is a fundamental aspect of coastal zones management. However, most of previous modeling studies were conducted by assuming that aeolian bedforms are subject to a constant wind velocity. In the present work, we perform a modeling study of the mobility of a coastal transverse dune under varying wind velocities based on the example of the Dune du Pilat in Aquitaine. We apply well-established models and empirical formula for aeolian dune migration, including a model previously validated against measurements of real profiles of desert and coastal dunes. The average migration velocity of Pilat dune predicted by the models is about 3m/year, which is in good agreement with in-situ measurements of the dune retreat rates. To test the response of transverse dune mobility to changing winds and the impact of extreme events on dune migration rates, we generate virtual, but still realistic wind time series using a stochastic model. The approach consists in modifying a few parameters of the stochastic model, in order to generate virtual time series with different characteristics than today. The results suggest that more frequent storms have less impacts than more intense winds, but also that both lead to moderate changes in the average dune velocity in

Abstract

Application of the SCARDEC method provides the apparent source time functions together with seismic moment, depth, and focal mechanism, for most of the recent earthquakes with magnitude larger than 5.6-6. Using this large dataset, we have developed a method to systematically invert for the rupture direction and average rupture velocity V-r, when unilateral rupture propagation dominates. The approach is applied to all the shallow (z < 120 km) earthquakes of the catalog over the 1992-2015 time period. After a careful validation process, rupture properties for a catalog of 96 earthquakes are obtained. The subsequent analysis of this catalog provides several insights about the seismic rupture process. We first report that up-dip ruptures are more abundant than down-dip ruptures for shallow subduction interface earthquakes, which can be understood as a consequence of the material contrast between the slab and the overriding crust. Rupture velocities, which are searched without any a-priori up to the maximal P wave velocity (6000-8000 m/s), are found between 1200 m/s and 4500 m/s. This observation indicates that no earthquakes propagate over long distances with rupture velocity approaching the P wave velocity. Among the 23 ruptures faster than 3100 m/s, we observe both documented supershear ruptures (e.g. the 2001 Kunlun earthquake), and undocumented ruptures that very likely include a supershear phase. We also find that the correlation of V-r with the source duration scaled to the seismic moment (T-6) is very weak. This directly implies that both T-6 and V-r are anticorrelated with the stress drop Act. This result has implications for the assessment of the peak ground acceleration (PGA) variability. As shown by Causse and Song (2015), an anticorrelation between Delta sigma and V-r significantly reduces the predicted PGA variability, and brings it closer to the observed variability.

Abstract

Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF) in concrete is likely to develop in massive civil engineering structures such as bridges, nuclear plants, and dams with major security issues. DEF pathology can lead to swelling and cracking which may significantly impact mass transfer and mechanical properties. It is then of major importance to build predictive tools for engineering conceptions and expertizes. In this contribution,the chemical swelling evolution is integrated within the overall constitutive law of concrete that, besides, can experience other phenomena such like damage, plasticity, and long term creep, not all considered here. On another hand, as DEF is activated by environmental humidity above a certain threshold, we use a notion of effective time that takes into account the cumulative exposition above this threshold. Hence, a special care is taken with regards to the chemical irreversibility, together with the humidity-drying cycles. The computationsare used to calibrate the model parameters with the help of results from an experimental compaign where two kinds of concretes were studied; one with siliceous aggregates, and one with calcious aggregates. We show the efficiency of the developed numerical tool through a series of examples., La pathologie de Réaction Sulfatique Interne (RSI) se développe dans les structures massives telles que les ponts, barrages, radiers d'installations nucléaires. Elle peut induire des gonflements significatifs qui peuvent influencer les propriétés mécaniques. Il est donc important de développer des outils prédictifs afin de mener des expertises. Dans cette contribution, on s'intéresse à la prise en compte de conditions d'humidité variables dans la cinétique de gonflement. Les exemples numériques permettent également de calibrer les paramètres des modèles pour mener des calculs d'ouvrages. Ici deux types de bétons sont testés: l'un basé sur des granulats à base de silice, l'autre sur des granulats à base de calcaire. On montre l'efficacité de l'outil numérique par la méthode des éléments finis développé à cet effet.

Abstract

The prestressed concrete confinement vessel is the third and last barrier in French Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). In case of a s vere accident (loss of cooling agent of the reactor for instance), pressure and temperature will increase in the nuclear vessel (+0,5 MPa and 180 °C during 2 weeks). Due to elevated temperatures, the evolution of basic creep will be accelerated. High compressive stresses would appear and induce higher delayed strains and damage. The modelling of basic creep and its couplings with temperature is then very important for the safety of the structure (tightness of the concrete vessel). Here, we present a model considering the following elements: a coupling between creep and damage is introduced, kinetics of basic creep is affected by temperature by the means of an Arrhenius thermo-activation, damage due to the increase in temperature (under stress or not) is taken into account. The model is compared with the available experimental results. This work is a part of the MACENA project.

Abstract

International audience; The “Non Destructive Evaluation of containment nuclear plant structures” project (ENDE) is a French project developed with 8 partners. Its aims are to control the containment of structures by Non Destructive Testing with ultrasonic, electromagnetic and electric techniques. The results are than combined together to consolidate the final evaluation. Two different objectives are proposed, the first is to estimate concrete properties and the second to follow concrete damages and cracks. The 4 years project was carried out in two steps (in laboratory and on site). The first step consists in realizing two sets of tests on concrete specimens in the laboratory. Objectives of the first set are to characterize the material and to quantify the sensitivity of the Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) to durability indicators (elasticity modulus, strength, porosity, water content) of the concrete. Two new indicators (thermal damage and stress applied) are tested in order to take into account a possibility of an accident (LLCA). Such accident induces relatively very severe conditions (pressure=4.2 bar and temperature T=180°C) inside the containment The second set was developed to evaluate damaged zones and cracks. The data fusion of measured NDE parameters is applied and developed for each result with two specific processes. It allows to select most sensitive and efficient approaches. The second step consists in an investigation of selected non destructives parameters on a real structures that is containment structures under varying pressure. The presented results were obtained on a mock-up of a containment wall realized in a 1/3 scale and constructed by EDF (Electricity of France) within the VeRCoRs program. These tests are realized in 2017 and simulate the ten-year nuclear power plants control in which the two functions regularly tested are: the concrete mechanical properties and the containment walls leakage. This paper presents the ENDE project and some of in site obtained results.

Abstract

Long-term shrinkage and creep of concrete can impact the lifetime of concrete structures. Basic creep of cementitious materials is now known to be non-asymptotic and evolve logarithmically with time at large times. However, the long-term kinetics of autogenous shrinkage is not systematically analyzed. Here we first aim at finding out how autogenous shrinkage evolves with time at long term. We analyze all experimental data available in the literature and find that autogenous shrinkage evolves logarithmically with respect to time at long term, like basic creep. Then, by considering concrete as a multiscale material, we obtain the bulk creep modulus of the calcium silicate hydrate gel. In the end, we show that the kinetics of long-term autogenous shrinkage can be a viscoelastic response to self-desiccation by comparing the mechanical stress that should be applied to explain this long-term kinetics of autogenous shrinkage with the capillary force due to self-desiccation.

Abstract

International audience; The first part of this article presents the feasibility study of a new structure for a 10-m-span bridge deck, taking into account the possibilities offered by new and high-strength materials and the advantages of a traditional environmental-friendly material. This 10-m-span element is formed by wooden beams braced at the ends, on supports atop a thin slab (7 cm thick) made of pre-cast ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete, and fiber-reinforced polymer at the bottom of the wooden beams. The issue of connecting the ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete to the wooden beams of high but possibly mismatching performance is addressed. An adhesive connection has been considered, following an increasing trend for composite structures where materials savings and optimal performance are searched in every component. The second part of this article presents the vibration-based damage monitoring. Small localized damages are hardly detected by global monitoring methods. The effectiveness of vibration-based detection depends on the accuracy of the modal parameter estimates and is limited by the low sensitivity of the modal parameters to a local stiffness reduction. A local reduction of stiffness related to frequency changes less than 1% was successfully detected on the bridge mockup after loading up to the serviceability limit state (SLS). Such a small decrease in the stiffness was not detected by the monitoring of the static load-deflection measurements but was confirmed by nonlinear local strain measurements. Statistical subspace-based damage detection successfully detected the change of the modal parameters of the investigated structure. Further analysis with a finite element model was conducted for assessing the consistency of the expected location and extent of the damaged elements.

Abstract

This experimental study aims to determine the effect of relative humidity on concrete expansion due to delayed ettringite formation (DEF), which still remains imperfectly known. Test methods were designed to trigger reaction in concrete specimens and determine how ambient RH affects expansion of the specimens. Saturated salts solutions were used to achieve distinct ambient RH conditions within containers. Also, chemical analysis was performed to determine and quantify the fractions of alkalis leaching out of the pore solutions of concretes. Results showed that the critical ambient RH value that corresponds to significant suppression of DEF could be greatly dependent on the alkalis fractions leached out. Finally, the consequences of swelling due to DEF on the concrete properties are assessed. After swelling, both of gas permeability and porosity was increased significantly and dynamic modulus was reduced by about 45%.

Abstract

Preoccupation for improving concrete infrastructure durability has become just as important as safety issues and concrete cracking plays a key role for durability. Despite various studies carried out in the last decade, very little information regarding the propagation of cracking under sustained loading and the physical mechanisms involved is available. In order to address this problem, an experimental study on the propagation of a macrocrack under sustained loading in steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams was completed. This article describes the flexural creep tests carried out on 0.7 m long beams. The evolution of the deflection, the crack width and the crack propagation were measured until the specimens' failure. The results permit the assessment of the influence of initial CMOD and sustained load levels on crack propagation, damage evolution, and the mechanisms leading to the rupture of the beams. In addition, behaviour of beams in sealed and drying hydric conditions with an identical loading history are compared to determine the influence of hydric conditions. The results show that crack propagation governs the failure mechanisms of SFRC beams subjected to high sustained load levels.

Abstract

Early age deformations, when restrained, lead to an increase of cracking risk of the material, especially in the case of high strength materials to which we apply modern high energy mixing techniques which accelerate initial hydration rate. The experimental campaign aims to investigate and understand the differences not yet explained between several autogenous measurement techniques, such as the initial swelling measured by the linear devices that is not observed in the case of volumetric measurements. The differences between the results obtained by means of devices when values are zeroed at setting time can be imputed to the intrinsic behaviour of the material within the well-defined boundary conditions imposed by the molds, and not only to the measurement artefact.; Les déformations au jeune age, lorsqu'elles sont gênées, conduisent à une augmentation du risque de fissuration du matériau, en particulier dans le cas de matériaux à haute résistance auxquels nous appliquons des techniques modernes de malaxage à haute énergie qui accélèrent le taux d'hydratation initial. La campagne expérimentale vise à étudier et comprendre les différences non encore expliquées entre plusieurs techniques de mesure endogènes, telles que le gonflement initial mesuré par les dispositifs linéaires non observé dans le cas des mesures volumétriques. Les différences entre les résultats obtenus au moyen de dispositifs lorsque les valeurs sont mises à zéro au temps de prise peuvent être imputées au comportement intrinsèque du matériau dans les conditions aux limites bien définies imposées par les moules, et pas seulement à l'artefact de mesure.

Abstract

Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of the bovine tuberculosis (bTB), mainly affects cattle, its natural reservoir, but also a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. Besides direct transmission via contaminated aerosols, indirect transmission of the M. bovis between wildlife and livestock might occur by inhalation or ingestion of environmental substrates contaminated through infected animal shedding. We monitored the survival of M. bovis in two soil samples chosen for their contrasted physical and-chemical properties (i.e. pH, clay content). The population of M. bovis spiked in sterile soils was enumerated by a culture-based method after 14, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 days of incubation at 4 degrees C and 22 degrees C. A qPCR based assay targeting the IS1561' locus was also performed to monitor M. bovis in both sterile and biotic spiked soils. The analysis of survival profiles using culture-based method showed that M. bovis survived longer at lower temperature (4 degrees C versus 22 degrees C) whereas the impact of soil characteristics on M. bovis persistence was not obvious. Furthermore, qPCR-based assay detected M. bovis for a longer period of time than the culture based method with higher gene copy numbers observed in sterile soils than in biotic ones. Impact of soil type on M. bovis persistence need to be deepened in order to fill the gap of knowledge concerning indirect transmission of the disease.

Abstract

Solid wall boundary conditions have been an area of active research within the context of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for quite a while. Ferrand et al. (Int. J. Numer. Methods Fluids 71(4), 446---472, 2012) presented a novel approach using a renormalization factor in the SPH approximation. The computation of this factor depends on an integral along the boundary of the domain and in their original paper Ferrand et al. gave an analytical formulation for the 2-D case using the Wendland kernel. In this paper the formulation will be extended to 3-D, again providing analytical formulae. Due to the boundary being two dimensional a domain decomposition algorithm needs to be employed in order to obtain special integration domains. For these the analytical formulae will be presented when using the Wendland kernel. The algorithm presented within this paper is applied to several academic test-cases for which either analytical results or simulations with other methods are available. It will be shown that the present formulation produces accurate results and provides a significant improvement compared to approximative methods.

Abstract

In the framework of the French National Project CEOS and the French ANR Research Project MEFISTO, a simple macroscopic probabilistic approach has been developed by IFSTTAR for cracking analysis of full-scale civil engineering structures. The originality of the approach is to take into account the heterogeneity of the material as the principal factor of influence of cracking processes and responsible for scale effects in concrete structures. The model is therefore thought out to characterise crack patterns. The paper focuses on the bases of this approach, and proposes some comparisons between experimental and numerical results.

Abstract

This paper focuses on studying the consequences of expansion due to delayed ettringite formation (DEF) on transfer and mechanical properties of concrete in the case of nuclear structures. It concerns a concrete representative of a containment vessel of a nuclear power plant where temperature variations at early age are very large. An experimental heat treatment, representative of the temperature history in the raft foundation of the containment vessel was reproduced after a modeling of its temperature rise. After this treatment, concrete exhibits swelling due to the development of DEF. The gas permeability is increased significantly after swelling, and the safety requirements expected by these structures are thus affected.

Abstract

One of the principal causes of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures is steel corrosion caused by the penetration of aggressive agents into the protective cover concrete layer (particularly water containing chlorides). Electromagnetic non- destructive evaluation (EM NDE) techniques are sensitive to these aggressive agents and can be used to assess concrete durability in terms of corrosion risk. The electromagnetic (EM) properties that are the focus of the study presented here are electrical resistivity and dielectric permittivity-inherent material properties that are both sensitive to degree of saturation and the salinity of the pore solution. Three EM NDE techniques suitable for the in situ investigation of concrete are used to obtain these EM properties: electrical resistivity tomography, capacimetry and ground penetrating radar. Experimental work is conducted on in a controlled laboratory environment with the aim of comparing the ability of the three EM NDE techniques to monitor the ingress of saline solutions into concrete slabs and discern between their chloride content. All three methods are found to be capable of detecting variation in water and chloride content and therefore show promise for the in situ monitoring of water and chloride ingress. However, more research is needed on the quantification of the EM properties over depth as well as on the combination of these methods in order to separate the influence of these two parameters on the EM responses.

Abstract

The paper presents experimental results concerning the comparison of tensile and compressive basic creep behaviours at early ages of two different concretes: a normal strength concrete (NSC) and a very high strength fibre reinforced concrete (HPFRC). This research project has been done in the context of a bilateral collaboration between Polytechnique Montreal and IFSTTAR. Observations on the HPFRC showed specific compressive creep similar to the specific tensile creep. Moreover, the specific creep curves obtained under compressive and tensile loading had always positive values, i.e. they were in same direction of the applied load on specimens. Measurements made on the NSC revealed specific compressive creep with positive values (in the loading direction). However, specific tensile creep presented negative values (opposite direction of loading) for a long period. A physical explanation based on the existence of two mechanisms with opposite effect is proposed to describe these basic creep results. The first mechanism is a coupling between the microcracking process and the water transfers that lead to additional self-drying shrinkage; the second mechanism is the self-healing of concrete induced by the microcracking.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract With the objective of modeling coastal wave dynamics taking into account nonlinear and dispersive effects, a highly accurate nonlinear potential flow model was developed. The model is based on the time evolution of two surface quantities: the free surface position and the free surface velocity potential. A spectral approach is used to resolve vertically the velocity potential in the domain, by decomposing the potential using an orthogonal basis of Chebyshev polynomials. With this approach, a wide range of relative water depths can be simulated, as demonstrated here with the propagation of nonlinear regular waves over a flat bottom with kh = 2π and 4π (where k is the wave number and h the water depth). The model is then validated by comparing the simulation results to experimental data for four non-breaking wave test cases: (1) nonlinear dynamics of a wave train generated by a piston-type wavemaker in constant water depth, (2) shoaling of a regular wave train on beach with constant slope up to the breaking point, (3) propagation of regular waves over a submerged bar, and (4) propagation of nonlinear irregular waves over a barred beach. The test cases show the ability of the model to reproduce well nonlinear wave interactions and the dynamics of higher-order bound and free harmonics. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data, confirming the model's ability to simulate accurately nonlinear and dispersive effects for non-breaking waves.

Abstract

This experimental study aims to determine the effect of limestone filler on concrete expansion due to delayed ettringite formation (DEF). Different mortars made with different sizes and percentages of limestone filler and Portland cement CEM I 52.5N are conserved in water. The expansion of the specimens is measured. Results show that DEF is not inhibited by limestone filler. The kinetics and the amplitude of the swelling depend on the size of the limestone filler. The volume fraction of aggregates changes only the kinetics: the relation between swelling and water uptake depends only on the size of the aggregates., 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

In Rio de Janeiro, immobility or the share of people with no journeys on any given day is very high (46%). Immobility has a marked geographical dimension in what is a segregated city. But income has only limited explanatory power. The population structure, with high proportions of people who are not in the labour force and who are unemployed, accounts for the high levels of immobility in the poor districts. Although population structure effects prevail, spatial factors such as the severance effect also account for differences between districts. Indeed, Rio de Janeiro features many different types of barriers that affect immobility in several districts and for several population groups. These barriers may be physical or symbolic and perceptive. This study proposes therefore to identify the scope of those barriers as they affect immobility. Our findings from the latest household travel survey available for the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro (2003) illustrate the effects of the two types of barrier, physical or symbolic and perceptive, on immobility that more specifically mark out certain categories of individuals such as housewives, the elderly, the unemployed or poor workers. Conversely, the wealthier active population seems to be little affected by the two types of barriers under study. Lastly, our results show that social fragmentation does not lead to greater immobility of favela populations in the heart of rich districts, but on the contrary to increased mobility, especially for the working age population in employment or looking for employment.

Abstract

In this paper, a physically based model describing the coupled ion and moisture transport is developed by combining existing theories of liquid water and water vapour transport with aqueous electrolyte theory. We derive the set of governing differential equations describing simultaneous movement of water in the vapour and liquid phases and consequent transport of ions in unsaturated porous media. The equations are developed in one-dimension, assuming isothermal conditions. It is also assumed that the movement of water in both the vapour and the liquid phases are first-order phenomena described by Fickian diffusion and Darcy’s law, respectively. The influence of ions on liquid–vapour equilibrium is modelled here by considering the water activity term. The effect of salt crystallization on the transport properties is considered. The diffusion of the ions present in the system is modelled by solving the Nernst–Planck/local electroneutrality set of equations. A computer program has been developed to solve this highly non-linear problem. The validation of the model has been performed on the basis of a comparison between predicted kinetics of moisture or ion concentration profiles and measurement obtained by NMR on plaster/Bentheimer sandstone system during drying.

Abstract

International audience; In unsaturated conditions, the durability of concrete structures is strongly dependent on the evolution of the amount of free water within concrete porosity. Reliable durability assessment of concrete structures in relation to their environment thus requires accurate unsaturated water transport description as well as reliable input data. The effect of carbonation on water transport remains poorly studied and data are lacking. It was then the purpose of this article to acquire all the data needed to describe unsaturated water transport in carbonated cementitious materials (porosity, water retention and unsaturated permeability). Four hardened pastes made with four different binders were carbonated at 3% CO2 to ensure representativeness with natural carbonation. Beyond the modification of the water retention curve and porosity clogging, significant microcracking due to carbonation shrinkage was observed. The consequence on permeability highlighted a competition between porosity clogging and microcracking that was dependent on the initial mineralogical composition.

Abstract

8th International RILEM SIB Symposium, ANCONE, Italie, 07-/10/2015 - 09/10/2015; Clay fines are known to reduce the water resistance of bitumen-aggregates binding and cause stripping in Asphalt Concrete (AC) mixtures. To address this phenomenon, a better understanding of the mineralogical composition of aggregates is needed as well as an assessment of the bitumen-clay-water interactions. This paper contributes to reach this goal from a mineralogical perspective. The most common clays in natural aggregates, kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite, were used to prepare thin clay films and artificial clay-rich aggregates. The bitumen-clay interaction was studied using the sessile drop and the Oliensis spot tests on those thin clay films, whereas Duriez tests allowed measuring the stripping potential of AC mixtures containing the clay-rich aggregates. The results show that the water-bitumen-clay interaction and water resistance of the AC mixture are specific to the clay mineralogy. Furthermore, they show that the bitumenclay interaction may be captured upon determining the surface energy of bitumen, the chemical composition and pH value of the clay and the bitumen-clay compatibility. Hence, predicting the water resistance of clay rich AC mixtures from mineralogical properties of the bitumen-clay interaction seems feasible.

Abstract

International audience; Carbonation is one of the main factors involved in corrosion of reinforced concrete structures. The impact of carbonation on the durability of cementitious-based materials is of major importance. However, carbonation is a very slow process (around 0.04% CO2 in the atmosphere). Accelerated test are then commonly used in the laboratory. The representativeness of accelerated test compared to natural carbonation is then an important issue. In this context, this study focuses on the mineralogical characterisation of ancient and recent cement pastes, respectively submitted to natural (in air) and accelerated carbonation (3% CO2). As a major conclusion, the mineralogical changes assessed using complementary techniques have highlighted a good agreement between natural and accelerated carbonation.

Abstract

This study presents a series of 4-point bending tests performed to describe the delayed behavior of unreinforced pre-cracked beams under low, moderate and high sustained loading levels. The deflection creep rate, the failure time and the load level were assessed. A linear relation, in a semi-log scale, was found for the deflection creep rate at high load levels. In addition, a linear relation, in a log-log scale, between the secondary deflection creep rate and failure time was observed. Besides, it was shown that the secondary creep deflection rate increases with the sustained loading level and the macrocrack propagation rate when macrocrack propagation occurs during the sustained loading. Physical mechanisms are proposed to explain these results and may be summarized as follows: the delayed behavior of an unreinforced cracked concrete specimen under sustained loading is mainly due to the cracking evolution, thus the creation of microcracks and/or the propagation of a macrocrack.

Abstract

This paper presents a real-time relation between the evolution of fluid permeability and the crack width opening in a saturated concrete sample. The standard Brazilian test has been enhanced so that one single controlled crack (up to 300 μm) is generated in the specimen. The procedure has been then adapted so that the simultaneous monitoring of the cracking process and the evolution of a fluid flow through the specimen are possible. Poiseulle's cubic law is commonly used in numerical analyses for describing the percolation of a fluid in a crack: this law is then corrected accordingly to our experimental observations thus taking into account the actual morphology of the opening crack. The effect of the size of the specimen (diameter and thickness) on the percolation process as well as threshold effect are also investigated and discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Home delivery is a service proposed by supermarkets either via online shopping or after shopping in the store and consists in transporting the goods purchased to the customer's home. It is currently difficult to estimate the turnover generated by such services but it is supposedly very low. One reason is that, nationwide, online shopping in cybermarkets is not a widespread practice. Turnover for the AuchanDirect cybermarket, for example, is reported to be just 45% of that of any single one of the company's hypermarkets. varies across geographical space. Whereas the urban population of city centres has a diversified supply within walking distance, periurban and rural populations have to drive several kilometres to their nearest supermarket (Motte-Baumvol 2008). While this is no problem for the vast majority of the periurban population, it is more difficult for some, such as household without cars, the elderly, or families with young children. For these families home delivery, especially through online sales, may improve access to an assortment of food products by eliminating travel-related difficulties. In this context home delivery is a form of distribution that can transform the framework of analysis of the population's access to shops, especially in the outer suburbs.

Abstract

International audience; A one-dimensional vertical two-phase flow model for sedimentation-consolidation process is presented. The model is based on solving the continuity and momentum equations for both fluid and solid phases. In the non-cohesive case, the momentum transfer between the two phases is reduced to the drag force around a single particle modified to take the hindrance effects into account. In the cohesive case, Darcy-Gersevanov's law is used for the closure of the momentum transfer between the two phases and the concept of "effective stress" is introduced to take into account the bed structuring. These closure laws are validated against high resolution experimental data in terms of settling curves and concentration profiles. The reliability of the model is illustrated from an analysis of the momentum balances at different stages during the process. Finally, the proposed closure laws and numerical algorithms are shown to be able to quantitatively reproduce sedimentation of non-cohesive and sedimentation- consolidation of cohesive sediments, including mud.

International audience; Proton nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry has been used to detect setting and microstructure evolution during cement hydration. NMR measurements were performed since casting, during setting and until hardening (from 0 to 3 days). The mobility of water molecules was assessed by an analysis focused on the diagram of longitudinal relaxation time T1 generated by an Inversion Recovery sequence. The initial stiffening of the solid network was identified by an analysis of the relaxation rate 1/T1. The kinetics of water depletion was investigated by using a simple one-pulse acquisition sequence. In parallel, conventional techniques (Vicat needle and temperature monitoring), as well as numerical simulations of hydration, were used to complement and validate these NMR results. Cement pastes and mortars with different water-to-cement ratios made of grey or white OPCs were tested. Furthermore, the effects of the addition of sand, super-plasticizer and silica fume on the hydration kinetics were investigated. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

At an early age, hydration of cement leads to a reduction in volume (caused by Le Chatelier contraction) that induces autogenous shrinkage. In addition, hydration is an exothermic reaction, and an increase in temperature occurs (followed by a decrease). Because autogenous shrinkage arises only in cement paste, and because the coefficient of thermal expansion may be different between cement paste and aggregates, strain incompatibilities lead to an internal self-equilibrated state of stress. Depending especially on the concrete mix, initial cracking may occur at the cement-paste scale leading to a modification of the global concrete behavior. In this paper, finite-element simulations using a mesoscopic mesh are performed to access to the internal stresses and damage state resulting from the hydration process. Calculations take into account the autogenous shrinkage of the cement paste and the differential thermal behavior between cement paste and aggregates. The influences of basic creep strains, thermal boundary conditions, and concrete mix (by a simplified approach) are studied, and it is shown that for ordinary concrete, hydration leads to a slight reduction in elastic stiffness and tensile strength when creep is taken into account. However, for high-performance concrete, a significant reduction in the elastic stiffness and tensile strength is expected (with respect to the potential tensile strength) even if creep is taken into account.

Abstract

Cet article présente les résultats d'essais réalisés sur un modèle en vraie grandeur de maison en maçonnerie, construite sur des vérins pour simuler différentes distributions de tassements de sa fondation lors d'une période de sécheresse. Les résultats des observations faites lors de plusieurs essais sont présentés. Une modélisation numérique du comportement de la maison expérimentale a été effectuée. Pour le calcul tridimensionnel en éléments finis au moyen du logiciel CESAR-LCPC, on a utilisé des éléments de volume pour les parpaings, les joints en mortier et le béton des semelles et des chaînages, tandis que les armatures étaient représentées par des éléments linéiques superposés au maillage volumique. Pour représenter les conditions de l'étude expérimentale, trois calculs ont été effectués, en enlevant les appuis sous un quart de la maison, puis sous la moitié de la maison, puis sous un autre quart de la maison. Les calculs ont donné des résultats proches des mesures.

Abstract

396 p.; International audience; Eco-design aims at improving the production process of a single product and eco-design practitioners often consider environmental performances of a product as a part of its initial functionalities. Only the use of LCA can quantify environmental performances. Because of its comparative nature, using LCA for eco-design requires comparing a new solution to an existing one. In the construction sector, materials are often considered as an eco-design variant. The use of a construction material is undeniably linked to its intrinsic properties but the link between these properties and its functions is not always obvious because several physical scales are nested (materials, in construction elements, in constructed objects). Using LCA in that frame means to compare various materials on the basis of identical fulfilled functions. The purpose of this article is to suggest a generic approach for using LCA to eco-design materials for construction. This approach takes into account the multi-functionality of materials, the "nested scales" of products, and the lack of knowledge at the early stages of design. The proposed approach might be the most convenient accompanying approach that should occur all along the design process from the material to the constructed object.

Abstract

This paper formulates and estimates a structural intertemporal model of labor force participation. Relying on theoretical characterizations derived from an economic model of lifetime behavior, we estimate a dynamic probit model with correlated random effects using longitudinal data to allow for a dynamic structure. The model is applied to a panel of married women drawn from the 1997--2002 French Labor Force surveys in order to represent their participation behavior. It is estimated by maximum simulated likelihood. Our results show that women's decisions to go out to work are characterized by significant state dependence, unobserved heterogeneity, and negative serial correlation in the transitory error component. In addition, we find that the presence of young children in a woman's household reduces her labor participation, but unequally according to their age and number. As expected, educational level has a positive impact on women's participation. Last, a rise in the husband's wage is found to raise female participation initially and to lower it subsequently. This empirical finding suggests that leisure may not systematically be a normal good, contrary to what is frequently assumed in the literature.

Abstract

Ce travail s'intègre plus largement dans une thématique de l'équipe Imagerie et Matériaux du laboratoire Navier, concernant les matériaux poreux au sens large (matériaux cimentaires, roche, sol, poreux modèles...) et plus précisément le rôle et le déplacement de l'eau dans ces structures complexes. Le spectromètre-imageur est arrivé en 1999, et les premiers travaux sur matériaux cimentaires ont débuté fin 2003, notamment avec l'équipe Physique et Mécanique des Milieux Poreux du laboratoire Navier. L'étude que nous avons menée s'inscrit dans la compréhension des mécanismes de structuration des matériaux cimentaires et de leur durabilité en utilisant la technique RMN. Le travail avait pour objectif d'utiliser le spectromètre-imageur comme outil de caractérisation des matériaux cimentaires. Une première étape était de situer l'IRM par rapport aux techniques classiques utilisées en génie civil. La seconde étape était de mettre en application cette technique pour sonder les matériaux cimentaires sur des suivis d'hydratation et d'hydratation couplée au séchage.

Abstract

Background Azotemia occurs frequently in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). It could indicate changes in renal hemodynamics. Hypothesis/Objectives To assess the renal resistive index (RI) in dogs with DMVD, and the statistical link between heart failure class, azotemia, echo-Doppler parameters, several plasma variables, and RI. Animals Fifty-five dogs with naturally occurring DVMD were used (ISACHC class 1 [n = 28], 2 [n = 19], and 3 [n = 8]). Methods Observational, blinded study, performed under standardized conditions. Physical examination, renal ultrasonography, and echo-Doppler examinations were performed in awake dogs. The RI of the renal, interlobar, and arcuate arteries were measured. Plasma creatinine, urea, and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide concentrations (NT-proBNP) were determined. Statistical links between variables and RI were tested by means of a general linear model. Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we show that the thixotropic behavior of standard fresh cement pastes may find two origins. We first clarify the ambiguity in literature concerning the critical strain of fresh cement pastes, thanks to a detailed analysis of their macroscopic behavior. We show that the largest critical strain can be associated to the network of colloidal interactions between cement particles whereas the smallest critical strain can be associated to the early hydrates, which form preferentially at the contact points between cement grains. From the study of the structuration kinetics, we show that there exists a short term thixotropy due to colloidal flocculation along with a long term thixotropy (of practical interest) due to the ongoing hydrates nucleation. From dimensional considerations, we moreover suggest why the apparent yield stress of the mixture left at rest can be approximated as a linear function of time.

Abstract

The population's access to groceries varies with the kind of spaces people live in (center vs periphery). If a large part of peri-urban peoples do not experience difficulties in accessing to supermarkets, some of them will face more difficulties. For these households, home delivery may reduce disparities of access between spaces and improve access to a wider assortment of groceries. The empirical work of this study is mainly based on the census of offers from several statistical sources, and a survey by interviews with local actors of home delivery. Our results show that home delivery supply is spatially concentrated. The delivery areas tend to promote a little more the populations of the center already close to a supermarket. Moreover, according to their schedules and their fares, some delivery services target a small sample of customers in order not to cause an explosion of their distribution costs., L’accessibilité des populations aux Grandes Surfaces Alimentaires (GSA) est différenciée selon les espaces. Si une très grande majorité de périurbains n’éprouvent pas de difficultés pour y accéder, certains y font face plus difficilement. Pour ces ménages en particulier, la livraison à domicile, constitue un moyen d’améliorer leur accès en supprimant les difficultés liées aux déplacements. A partir d’une recension de l’offre et d’une enquête par entretiens auprès des principaux acteurs de la livraison à domicile de l’aire urbaine dijonnaise, nos résultats mettent en évidence une offre de livraison à domicile peu développée et encore balbutiante. Spatialement concentrée au centre de l’aire urbaine, les aires de livraison tendent à favoriser un peu plus encore les populations urbaines plus proches des GSA au détriment des populations périurbaines périphériques.

Abstract

International audience; In this note we are interested in the modelling of sediment transport phenomena. We mostly focus on bedload transport and we do not consider suspension sediment processes. We first propose a numerical scheme for the classical Saint-Venant - Exner model. It is based on a relaxation approach for the whole system and it works with all sediment flux function. The stability of the scheme is investigated and some numerical tests are proposed. We exhibit that this coupled approach is more stable than the splitting approach that is mostly used in industrial softwares. Then we derive an original three layers model in order to overcome the difficulties that are encountered when using the classical Exner approach and we present a related relaxation model.

Abstract

Dredging operations of navigation channels and harbours are regularly planned in order to maintain the nautical depth and to ensure the navigation safety. Depending on the quality of the dredged material (fixed by the Oslo convention, 1972), dredged sediments can be released into the sea or stored at the Earth’s surface to be cleaned up. The present study deals with release operations. We simulate the complete process (generation and settling of a sediment plume, propagation of a density current on the bottom) using a two-phase flow model. We show that in this case, the sediment (or solid) phase strongly differs from the motion of the water (or fluid) phase. Comparisons between numerical results and experiments are carried out in order to illustrate the effects of sediment diameter, initial concentration, and ambient current on the plume dynamics and on the density current. We obtain a correct agreement with experiments for the specific release case.

International audience; La seconde transition démographique est associée à une diversification et une diminution de la taille des ménages. Dans le contexte territorial et sociodémographique spécifique du périurbain, les formes de la STD sont distinctes de celles qui ont marqué les territoires urbains. En effet, une faible urbanité et la forte représentation des couples avec enfants caractérisent traditionnellement les territoires périurbains. Ce type d'environnement est a priori peu adapté aux attentes des petits ménages, notamment les célibataires les plus jeunes, à la recherche d'aménités urbaines proches. Ces petits ménages ne cessent pourtant d'augmenter dans le périurbain francilien. Mais ces évolutions sont très fortement marquées selon le degré d'urbanité des territoires et le passé marital des ménages.

Abstract

National audience; La notion de vulnérabilité, vue comme une situation ou comme un processus, intègre pleinement les questions de handicap. Longtemps assimilé à l’infirmité de la personne, le handicap est davantage perçu aujourd’hui comme une situation résultant de l’interaction entre plusieurs facteurs, notamment des facteurs personnels et des facteurs environnementaux. Le glissement de la responsabilité du handicap de l’individu vers les obstacles, qu’ils soient environnementaux, politiques, culturels ou techniques, est visible d’une part dans l’évolution de la définition du handicap et des modèles tentant de l’expliquer et le comprendre et d’autre part dans les actions politiques mises en œuvre et les lois adoptées. Aussi, comme l’ensemble des vulnérabilités, les situations de handicap sont-elles fonction du temps et de l’espace, notamment des contextes historiques, politiques et sociaux. Résultant donc d’une interaction entre de nombreux facteurs, la situation de handicap est une notion complexe et difficile à appréhender et mesurer. Au travers de perspectives historique, législative, scientifique et contextuelle, nous allons présenter l’intérêt et les objectifs de ce premier numéro de la revue Populations vulnérables consacré au champ du handicap.
