Abstract

Silicon Drift Detectors, widely employed in high-resolution and high-rate X-ray applications, are considered here with interest also for electron detection. The accurate measurement of the tritium beta decay is the core of the TRISTAN (TRitium Investigation on STerile to Active Neutrino mixing) project. This work presents the characterization of a single-pixel SDD detector with a mono-energetic electron beam obtained from a Scanning Electron Microscope. The suitability of the SDD to detect electrons, in the energy range spanning from few keV to tens of keV, is demonstrated. Experimental measurements reveal a strong effect of the detector's entrance window structure on the observed energy response. A detailed detector model is therefore necessary to reconstruct the spectrum of an unknown beta-decay source.

Abstract

The KATRIN (Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino) experiment investigates the energetic endpoint of the tritium beta-decay spectrum to determine the effective mass of the electron anti-neutrino. The collaboration has reported a first mass measurement result at this TAUP-2019 conference. The TRISTAN project aims at detecting a keV-sterile neutrino signature by measuring the entire tritium beta-decay spectrum with an upgraded KATRIN system. One of the greatest challenges is to handle the high signal rates generated by the strong activity of the KATRIN tritium source while maintaining a good energy resolution. Therefore, a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector and read-out system are being designed to handle rates of about 100 Mcps with an energy resolution better than 300 eV (FWHM). This report presents succinctly the KATRIN experiment, the TRISTAN project, then the results of the first 7-pixels prototype measurement campaign and finally describes the construction of the first TRISTAN module composed of 166 SDD-pixels as well as its implementation in KATRIN experiment.

Abstract

Electron spectrometry is traditionally challenging due to the difficulty of correctly reconstructing the original energy of the detected electrons. Silicon Drift Detectors, extensively used for X-ray spectrometry, are a promising technology for the precise measurement of electrons energy. The ability to correctly model the detector entrance window response to the energy deposited by electrons is a critical aspect of this application. Abstract

This paper presents the results of neutron flux measurements at two irradiation facilities of the TRIGA Mark II reactor at ENEA Casaccia Research Center, Italy. The goal of these measurements is to provide a complete characterization of neutron irradiation facilities for accurate and precise dose evaluation in radiation damage tests and, more generally, for all applications that need a good knowledge of neutron flux in terms of intensity, energy spectrum and spatial distribution. The neutron activation technique is used to measure the activation rates of several reactions, chosen so to cover the whole energy range of neutron flux spectrum. A multi-group neutron flux measurement is obtained through an unfolding algorithm based on a Bayesian statistical model. The obtained results prove that this experimental method allows to measure the total neutron flux within 2% statistical uncertainty, and to get at the same time a good description of its energy spectrum and spatial distribution.

Abstract

This project is focused on the development of a novel strategy for the precise measurement of beta decay energy spectra. The exact determination of beta spectra has wide implications in the particle and nuclear physics fields: from sterile neutrino searches \cite{Adhikari 2016} to validation of nuclear models of interest for double beta decay searches \cite{Suhonen 2017}, to reactor neutrino experiments. The experimental strategy is focused on the mitigation of the systematic uncertainty in the determination of the spectral shape related to the energy response of the detector. The plan is to use Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs), exploiting their excellent energy resolution and response uniformity, the thin dead layer and the fast signal that allows high rate operations. A complete modeling of SDDs response to the interaction of beta particles via numerical simulations, validated with dedicated measurements, aims at identifying and canceling the detector-related systematics. Similar attention will be devoted to the integration of beta radioactive sources that preserve the energy information carried by the emitted electrons, and to a veto system with a full solid angle coverage to intercept any escaping particle potentially carrying a fraction of the original electron energy.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te ≤ 1.3 · 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2vββ decay with a resulting half-life of T 2v1/2 = [7.9 ± 0.1 (stat.) ± 0.2 (syst.)] x 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

Abstract

A time evolution model was developed to study fuel burnup for the TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Pavia. The results were used to predict the effects of a complete core reconfiguration and the accuracy of this prediction was tested experimentally. We used the Monte Carlo code MCNP5 to reproduce system neutronics in different operating conditions and to analyse neutron fluxes in the reactor core. The software that took care of time evolution, completely designed in-house, used the neutron fluxes obtained by MCNP5 to evaluate fuel consumption. This software was developed specifically to keep into account some features that differentiate experimental reactors from power ones, such as the daily ON/OFF cycle and the long fuel lifetime. These effects can not be neglected to properly account for neutron poison accumulation. We evaluated the effect of 48 years of reactor operation and predicted a possible new configuration for the reactor core: the objective was to remove some of the fuel elements from the core and to obtain a substantial increase in the Core Excess reactivity value. Abstract

In this work, the characterization of the full-power steady state of the TRIGA Mark II nuclear reactor of the University of Pavia is performed by coupling Monte Carlo (MC) simulation for neutronics with "Multiphysics" model for thermal-hydraulics. Neutronic analyses have been performed starting from a MC model of the entire reactor system, based on the MCNP5 code, that was already validated in fresh fuel and zero-power configuration (in which thermal effects are negligible) using the available experimental data as benchmark. In order to describe the full-power reactor configuration, the temperature distribution in the core is necessary. To evaluate it, a thermal-hydraulic model has been developed, using the power distribution results from MC simulation as input. The thermal-hydraulic model is focused on the core active region and takes into account sub-cooled boiling effects present at full reactor power. The obtained temperature distribution is then introduced in the MC model and a benchmark analysis is carried out to validate the model in fresh fuel and full-power configuration. The good agreement between experimental data and simulation results concerning full-power reactor criticality, proves the reliability of the adopted methodology of analysis, both from neutronics and thermal-hydraulics perspective., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 2 appendixes. Abstract

Simple Summary: The treatment choice for an older patient with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is challenging due to the complexity of the patient. Among the several available tools to evaluate an older subject with DLBCL, the simplified geriatric assessment (sGA) categorizes patients as fit, unfit, or frail and has been validated to predict the risk of death. The elderly prognostic index (EPI), which combines sGA and IPI scores and hemoglobin level, is the first prognostic score for older patients, with three risk groups for survival. New validated tools will help physicians choose the best treatment for elderly patients with DLBCL, further contributing to improving the personalized approach to elderly subjects. The treatment choice for an older patient with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) depends on many other factors in addition to age, which alone does not reflect the complexity of the aging process. Functional features and comorbidity incidence differ not only between younger and older patients but also among older patients themselves. The comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) quickly evaluates fitness status by investigating the patient's different functional areas, degree of autonomy, and presence of comorbidities. Various tools are available to evaluate frailty; which assessment tool to use should be based on the clinical aim. The simplified geriatric assessment (sGA) from the elderly project by the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi, prospectively tested on the largest number of patients, categorizes patients as fit, unfit, or frail, with a decreasing rate of overall survival. The elderly prognostic index (EPI), which combines sGA and IPI scores and hemoglobin level, is the first prognostic score for older patients, with three risk groups for survival. Future GAs should consider new parameters, including sarcopenia, which appears to be inversely related to survival. Abstract

Cryogenic single-particle detectors are devices, operated close to absolute zero, widely used in current and future generation detectors for the search for rare particle physics processes, for example neutrino-less double beta decay. Traditionally, these detectors are assembled in copper structures inside dilution refrigerators. The use of copper, however, is expected to become a limiting factor on the path towards the background reduction needed for future generation projects. Its high density and large Z make it an effective target where gamma-rays produced by radioactive contaminants can lose part of their energy undetected, and subsequently be measured as sensitivity-spoiling spurious signals in the region of interest of the energy spectrum. We present here a new method of building assemblies for kg-scale cryogenic single particle detectors based on low Z, low density additive manufacturing-compatible polymers that can in the future be doped with scintillating compounds thus making them an active component of the experimental setup. Additive manufacturing overcomes the limitations, imposed by traditional techniques, in the design of the structures. The assembly geometry can therefore be driven by the combined needs for reduction of mass and optimization of light production and collection. The experimental setup and the performance of the detectors in terms of energy resolution and temperature stability are described.

Abstract

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the most common leukemia in the western countries, is characterized by immunosuppression due to disease itself and cytotoxic treatments. Since the beginning of COVID‐19 pandemic, patients with CLL appear to be a vulnerable population. In addition, phase III mRNA vaccine trials did not provide information about the efficacy in immunocomprised population. In CLL, the antibody‐mediated response to SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccine is impaired. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination on humoral immune response and on cellular immunity in CLL patients. Humoral immune response to BNT162b2 messenger RNA COVID‐19 vaccine was evaluated in 44 CLL patients comprising 20 treatment‐naïve, 14 under treatment with ibrutinib and 10 in follow‐up after completion of therapy. A positive serological response to SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination with IgG titers higher than 13 UA/ml was detected in 54.6% of CLL patients with a higher response in patients who obtained remission after treatment. Reduced antibody response was detected in patients under ibrutinib treatment. T‐cell response to overlapping pool of peptides representing the spike region was assessed in paired CLL samples collected before and after 1 month from the second dose of COVID‐19 vaccine in treatment‐naïve and ibrutinib‐treated CLL patients using cytokine secretion assay. Both CD3+ CD4+ and CD3+ CD8+ T cells are able to mount a cellular response to spike peptides with secretion of IFNγ and TNFα before and after vaccination in both treatment naïve and ibrutinib‐treated patients and this cellular immune response is independent by COVID‐19 vaccination. Collectively, T cell response to spike peptides appeared more blunted in CLL patients under treatment with ibrutinib compared to untreated ones. Our study supports the need for optimization of vaccination strategy to achieve an adequate immune response keeping strict preventive measures by CLL patients against COVID‐19. Abstract

Precision electron spectrometry in the keV range has always been considered a challenging task. The reconstruction of the original electron energy from the detected signal is not trivial because multiple effects modify the kinetic energy of the electron along its path. If not correctly accounted for, these effects can spoil and bias the reconstructed energy with a dramatic reduction of accuracy and precision. In this paper we address one of the most critical aspects of electron spectrometry: the generally unknown effect of the detector entrance window. We show that, with a MonteCarlo-based approach, we are able to build a model of the entrance window accurate enough to reduce the negative effects due to its existence. We adopt for this purpose Silicon Drift Detectors that, thought primarily used for X-ray spectrometry, appear a promising device for electron spectrometry. The technique we discuss exploits characterization and validation measurements performed with electron beams from a Scanning Electron Microscope, later reconstructed with a GEANT4 MonteCarlo simulation.

© Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.
