These specifications were developed through joint evaluations by the Dental Investigation Service and the Occupational and Environmental Health Laboratory. In this test and evaluation of the quality and performance of dental diamond rotary instruments, the areas evaluated were: dimensions, construction, shank roughness, concentricity, durability, cutting efficiency, and corrosion. The testing methods followed those of the proposed American Dental Association Specification for Dental Diamond Rotary Instruments, with some modifications to meet the needs of the USAF Dental Service. This study provided a means of comparing diamond instruments from different manufacturers.

The dental high-volume oral evacuation (HVE) system is an independent clinical vacuum system specifically designed for scavenging, collection, and disposal of liquids, solids, and aerosols from the patient's mouth. Control of aerosols generated by the high-speed air turbine handpiece and emanating from the operating site is essential to prevent contamination of breathing zones and the treatment environment in general. Equally important for safe and effective treatment delivery is the ability of the HVE to maintain a clear visual pathway and operating site during operating procedures. The history of surgical field equipment is reviewed. The complete description of a self-contained, portable, minor surgery field assembly is presented. The assembly is intended for use in mass casualty or contingency situations for preevacuation and premajor surgical or life-sustaining treatment. (Author)

This report was compiled to provide guidance in using light and color scientifically in the dental environment. Visible light and the contiguous infrared and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum have measurable physiologic effects on man. Also, component wavelengths of visible light (color) appear to have definite psychological manifestations. Specific applications of light are recommended for the various divisions of USAF dental facilities. (Author)

The Den-tal-ez V5-15 dental chair top with PL-200 lift base was evaluated to determine its suitability for use in delivery of Air Force dental health care. The evaluation included clinical use, and technical and mechanical considerations. The chair proved acceptable with addition of appropriate options. (Author)

The Siemans Heliodent 70 Portaray field dental X-ray unit was evaluated to determine its suitability for use in the Air Force air-transportable-hospital dental module. Test included clinical, maintenance, and radiation-safety evaluation. The unit proved acceptable for use as an Air Force field dental X-ray device. (Author)

The Chayes-Virginia Vision III chair, Perception unit, assistant's mobile cart, and operating stools were evaluated to determine suitability for use in delivering Air Force dental health care. Technical and clinical performance data indicate that some components may be acceptable as is, others with modifications (most of which are available as options). (Author)

The Coastal Medallion M-3 chair, Sprint Flex-System II, assistant's cart, and operating stools were evaluated to determine suitability for use in delivering Air Force dental health care. The evaluation included clinical use and technical and mechanical considerations. Due to the fragile construction of the M-3 chair, it is not recommended for Air Force use. Inflexible instrument positioning precludes unit recommendation. Cart and stools were acceptable. (Author)

The purpose of this report is to provide dental staff personnel with a more comprehensive knowledge of the design and function of central dental evacuation systems; establish working details for the most efficient and cost-effective dental evacuation systems consistent with present and projected military dental practice requirements; provide clear, concise equipment configuration and performance requirements as guidance to health facilities offices so that they may closely supervise planning for central dental evacuation systems; and provide procurement, installation, and performance criteria to contractors to assure delivery of equipment consistent with quality design, longevity, and clinical performance. Four central dental evacuation systems (identified by AFM 88-50, Criteria for Design and Construction of Air Force Health Facilities) are discussed. Part I of this report includes the theory of vacuum operation, the details of the systems, their component parts, and their function. Part II presents specifications, design guidance, acceptance testing, and utilities requirements. Sufficient detail is provided to permit identification of well-designed systems and components as well as of those that do not meet U.S. Air Force requirements. A glossary of definitions and abbreviations is included at the end of the report to enhance comprehension of the systems' descriptions, specifications, and design guidance.

The selection of an ultrasonic cleaner for use in Air Force dental facilities depends on several factors. Determining the primary use of the unit prior to purchase is important because different units may be better suited to different tasks. Traditionally, dental laboratories use ultrasonic cleaners to remove cements, polishing compounds, and waxes from prostheses. These units, however, can also be used to clean contaminated dental instruments, thus reducing the chances of cross-contamination. Hinged instruments and aspirator tips often have foreign material build up in areas inaccessible or difficult to clean. According to the American Dental Association, all practical methods of sterilization or disinfection can be overchallenged by soiled or heavily contaminated instruments. Because they reduce the likelihood of injury and infection of the hands, ultrasonic cleaners are safer than manual scrubbing. They are 16 times more effective in their cleaning ability and significantly reduce the aerosolization of potentially pathogenic organisms during the instrument-cleaning process. The purpose of this report is to help base dental surgeons decide which ultrasonic cleaner(s) will best suit their needs. All units were evaluated with the concept of dental treatment room use.
