The study investigates economic disparities between immigrants and native populations in receiving societies, going beyond traditional factors like education and work experience. It explores the influence of cultural distance between immigrants' origin countries and the USA on three socio-economic indicators: income, homeownership, and poverty status. Using measures from Hofstede (2001) and Inglehart and Welzel (2005), the study relies on data from the American Community Survey (2002–2022). Controls include English proficiency, survey year, education, marital status, age, gender, and community disadvantage. Multivariate results consistently highlight the significance of cultural distance as a predictor for income, homeownership, and poverty status among immigrants. These findings remain robust even when accounting for other factors, emphasizing the substantial role of cultural barriers in immigrant economic adaptation beyond differences in human capital, community economic conditions, and other controls. Agroforestry practices (AFPs) play a critical role in enhancing income and reducing poverty. This study assessed the effect of AFPs on income and poverty status of farmers in Lay Armachiho (LA), Bahir Dar Zuria (BDR), and Banja districts of Northwestern Ethiopia. 387 households, and 63 key informants were interviewed. In line with the sustainable development goal to end poverty in all forms, the Nigerian Government launched Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) - as a social investment programme to alleviate poverty by providing credit to petty traders to support entrepreneurship. This study assesses the impact of Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) on the poverty status of beneficiaries in Cross River State, Nigeria. Specifically, it compared the mean income before, and after accessing the loan, analysed the determinants of poverty status of the respondents in the study area, enumerated the benefits of GEEP to the respondents, and identified the challenges faced by the beneficiaries in accessing the loan. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 394 respondents who had benefitted from the programme across the eleven Local Government Areas (LGAs) that the programme covered. Data were obtained from primary source with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire, and analyzed using; frequency count, mean, Foster Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) model, paired T- test (Z), and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that, majority of the respondents were male (55.6%) with a mean age of 35 years, and had an average household size of 5 persons. The study also showed that 98.9% of the respondents were educated. The mean monthly income before GEEP support was N 44,535.53, while after GEEP it was N54180.20. Thirty-six percent of the total respondents were poor (36%). The comparative analysis of the mean income before and after accessing the loan showed that, there was a significant difference between their mean incomes at 5% level of significance. Key variables that determined poverty status were; household size and loan amount. The main benefits of GEEP to the respondents were; increase in beneficiaries’ income, and improvement in their standard of living. The major challenges faced by the respondents were; lack of appropriate means to repay loan, stressful loan procedure, and difficulty in transferring money from mobile wallet to bank. The study recommended that the loan application process should be less complex to enable quick loan application. The GEEP programme should be sustained, and allowed to have wider coverage in both rural and urban areas of the country as it has assisted a lot of small business owners’ access to cheap credit. Background: Society placed women living in the men's world as inferior. Poverty as a stressor for men has the opportunity to make women victims of violence from their partners. The study aimed to analyze the effects of poverty on the risk of intimate partner violence among married women in Indonesia. Materials and Methods: The samples used were married women aged 15-49 years old. The weighted sample size was 34,086 women. Besides intimate partner violence as the dependent variable, other variables analyzed as independent variables were wealth status, residence, age, education, employment, living with in-laws, and recent sexual activity. The study employs binary logistic regression to determine intimate partner violence risk in the final stage. Results: The results show the poorest married women were 1.382 times more likely than the richest married women to experience intimate partner violence. Married women with wealthy status in the lower category were 1.320 times more likely than the richest married women to experience intimate partner violence. Married women with a wealthy group in the middle class were 1.262 times more likely than the richest married women to experience intimate partner violence. Married women with wealthy status in the more decadent category were 1.132 times more likely than the richest married women to experience intimate partner violence. Conclusion: The study concluded that poverty was a risk factor for intimate partner violence among married women in Indonesia. The lower the socioeconomic status, the greater the risk of intimate partner violence.

Poverty is a critical factor affecting subsistence of farmers in Nigeria, especially in rural areas. The study examined determinants of poverty among rural farming households in Adamawa State, Nigeria. Specifically, the research objectives were to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, determine the poverty status of the respondents, and examine the determinants of poverty among the respondents. Primary data used for the studies were generated from 255 respondents, who were selected using a multi-stage random sampling technique. The analytical tools used were descriptive, Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT), and Logit regression models. The findings of the study revealed that the majority (90.98 %) of rural farming household heads were men, married (90.20 %) with a mean age of 38.42 years, educated (76.48 %), with a mean farm size of 2.65 ha and mean household size of 5 people. The majority (85.88 %) of the respondents had no access to credit. The study further revealed that respondents’ distributions by poverty status were 0.42, 0.23, and 0.16 for poverty incidence (Po), poverty depth (P1), and poverty severity (P2), respectively. The result of the Logit regression model revealed that sex, formal education, primary occupation, access to credit, total income, and annual remittances had a positive influence on poverty status, while age, marital status, and household size had a negative influence on poverty status among farming households and were statistically significant at various levels. Hence the study recommends need for the farming households to have access to credit schemes. This could increase the off-farm activities that could generate more income for the household and thereby reduce their poverty.

Depression and anxiety are common and persistent internalizing disorders during adolescence. The present study aimed to explore whether family resilience would moderate the effects of bullying victimization, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and poverty status on adolescent internalizing disorders. This study used the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) and included 20,708 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (M = 14.7, SD = 1.70). Hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to examine the relationship of bullying victimization, ACEs, and poverty status with adolescents' internalizing disorders and explore the moderating role of family resilience on that relationship. The study found positive associations of bullying victimization, ACEs, and poverty status with adolescents' internalizing disorders. Family resilience moderated the effects of bullying victimization and ACEs on adolescents' internalizing disorders. The findings suggest that to prevent adolescents' internalizing disorders, it is critical to promote family resilience and reduce bullying victimization, ACEs, and poverty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated elements of rural off-farm economy: effects of off-farm income on productivity and poverty status of rural maize farming households in Kaduna State, Nigeria. This research study was designed specifically to achieve the following objectives: determine the socio-economic characteristics of rural maize farmers, determine the poverty status of rural maize farmers, determine the elasticity of production and return to scale of rural maize production, examine the effect of off-farm income on productivity of rural maize farmers, examine the effect of off-farm income on food security of rural maize farmers, and determine the constraints facing rural maize farming households. The econometric and statistical tools used to achieve stated objectives were; descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) poverty model, elasticity of production, return to scale, Probit model analysis, and Stochastic production frontier model. Age distributions of rural maize farming households (x ̅=39.50 years) shows that 83% of rural maize farming households were less than 50 years. About 69% of rural maize farming households had less than 10 people per household (x ̅=6 people per household).The food poverty line was 4,210.16 Naira (8.77 USD). Poverty incidence 〖(P〗_0),poverty depth 〖(P〗_1) and poverty severity 〖(P〗_2) of rural maize farming households were 0.517, 0.216 and 0.221 respectively. Determinants of productivity of rural maize farming households are farm size (P < 0.05), seed input (P < 0.05), fertilizer input (P < 0.05), chemical input (P < 0.10), and labour input (P < 0.05). In the inefficiency model, level of education (P < 0.05), marital status (P, 0.10), off-farm income (P < 0.05), access to extension agents (P < 0.05) and access to credit (P, 0.10) statistically and significantly reduces the probability of rural maize farming households of being food poor. Factors that statistically and significantly reduces food poverty status among rural maize farming households were gender (P < 0.05), educational level (P < 0.10), extension contact (P < 0.01) and off-farm income (P < 0.01). The retained production constraints facing rural maize farming households in the principal component analysis are lack of credit facilities, lack of fertilizers, lack of improved seeds, bad road infrastructures and lack of extension services.

Poverty is the lack of ability to reach the least possible level of standard of living. Both food and non‐food poverty remain the foremost concern in many developing countries in general and Ethiopia in particular. The proportions of rural households living below poverty line in Ethiopia have been increasing over the past decades. The causes of poverty are enormous and multifaceted. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine the status and determinants of poverty among rural households in Meskan District. Cross‐sectional survey data were collected from 360 rural households randomly. The costs of basic needs approach, Foster, Greer, and Thorbecke methods (FGT index), and logit model were used to determine poverty line and identify determinants of poverty status among rural households, respectively. Moreover, for the analysis of the data, the respective statistical and econometric tests were employed. The findings show that poverty line/absolute poverty status was found about birr 6305 per year per adult equivalent consumption in District. Besides, the annual mean food and non‐food consumption expenditure poverty lines were birr 4157.7 and birr 2147.6 per year, respectively. The incidence, depth, and severity of poverty measures and its status were found to be 0.333, 0.051, and 0.013 values, while compared poverty measures and its status with national poverty incidence status; there was highest poverty incidence among rural households due to low human, physical, financial, and natural capitals as well as weak institutional arrangements. Logit model result similarly shows that factors affecting poverty level among rural households are highly associated with age of households, dependency ratio, marital status of household, education level household, farm size, distance from nearest market, access to food aid, oxen and livestock possession in study District. Our results suggest that the poverty reduction plans and policies should target specific localities and households livelihood situations because poverty by its nature is individual concentrated rather than aggregate national as whole. While empirical studies have observed that homeownership is associated with improved mental health conditions, research indicates that this relationship might vary by race. Moreover, such a White-Black disparity in the impacts of homeownership on mental health could be complexed by poverty status, as maintaining one's homeownership could be a financial burden for people living in poverty status, defined by the US official poverty threshold. We add to the existing literature by analyzing the impacts of homeownership on psychological distress, simultaneously disaggregating by race and poverty status using survey data from the Panel Study on Income Dynamics from the 2017 and 2019 waves (N = 7059). Propensity score weighting and doubly robust estimation are applied to estimate causal inference for the impact of 2017 homeownership on 2019 psychological distress using negative binomial models. First , we found the impacts of homeownership on reducing psychological distress are significant for White Americans, not for Black Americans. Second , we found such a White-Black disparity is only observable for populations not living in poverty. On the other hand, for populations living in poverty, homeownership no longer lowers psychological distress for either race. Findings suggest that financial support and mental health support are needy to address inequality in the impacts of homeownership on mental health, which could simultaneously vary by poverty status and race. Cross-product ratios (αs), which are structurally analogous to odds ratios, are statistically sound and demographically meaningful measures. Assuming constant cross-product ratios in the elements of a matrix of multistate transition probabilities provides a new basis both for calculating probabilities from minimal data and for modeling populations with changing demographic rates. Constant-α estimation parallels log linear modeling, in which the αs are the fixed interactions, and the main effects are calculated from relevant data. Procedures are presented showing how an N state model's matrix of transition probabilities can be found from the constant αs and (1) the state composition of adjacent populations, (2) (N - 1) known probabilities, (3) (N - 1) known transfer rates, or (4) (2N - 1) known numbers of transfers. The scope and flexibility of constant-α models makes them applicable to a broad range of demographic subjects, including marital/union status, political affiliation, residential status, and labor force status. Here, an application is provided to the important but understudied topic of poverty status. Census data, separately for men and women, provide age-specific numbers of persons in three poverty statuses for the years 2009 and 2014. Using an estimated transition matrix that furnishes a set of cross-product ratios, the constant-α approach allows the calculation of male and female poverty status life tables for the 2009-2014 period. Previous research has shown that people who are in poverty live in deprived neighbourhoods. Ethnic minority groups are more likely than the White majority to be poor and live in such areas. The likelihood of being poor may be reduced by having access to mixed social networks. But, for those living in deprived neighbourhoods there may be neither opportunities nor resources to form and maintain social networks that are mixed in terms of their ethnic or geographic composition. This paper tests this contention, for ethnic groups in the UK. Specifically, we use the UK's largest household survey to examine the relationship between deprivation and mixing by investigating the following research questions: (1) Does neighbourhood deprivation alter the influence of mixed social network on poverty status? and (2) Is the influence of neighbourhood deprivation and social networks on poverty status equivalent for all ethnic minority groups? Our results suggest that high neighbourhood deprivation tends to over-ride the positive associations of geographically mixed social networks. Moreover, while this result is strong for the White British majority, there is only weak evidence that it holds for ethnic minority groups. Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the basic needs such as food, clothing and housing and essential facilities to enjoy a minimum standard of life and well-being that is considered acceptable in the society. Poverty status in India is assigned to people that do not meet a certain threshold level set by the Niti Aayog in India. Measurement of poverty has been extremely important for evaluation of developmental strategies. In the present study, estimation of poverty in rural and urban Haryana has been undertaken on the aspects of drinking water and hygienic conditions. For estimation of poverty, the secondary data on selected indicators of drinking water and hygienic conditions from 69th round of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) have been used. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) using the dual cut-off method based on the counting approach has been applied for poverty estimation. It involves counting of different types of deprivations that individuals experience at the same time. These deprivation profiles have been considered to identify the poor households and then used to construct a MPI. It is observed that in rural Haryana the districts of Mewat, Gurgaon, Rohtak, Panipat, Mahendragarh and Palwal have higher level of multidimensional poverty while for the households of urban Haryana, the districts of Sonipat, Mewat, Panipat, Jhajjar, Rohtak and Mahendragarh found multidimensionally poor. Background: Education level is one of the strongest protective factors against high-risk behaviors such as cigarette smoking. Minorities’ Diminished Returns (MDRs), however, suggest that the protective effects of education level tend to be weaker for racial and ethnic minority groups relative to non-Hispanic White people. Only two previous studies have shown that MDRs may also apply to lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals; however, these studies have focused on outcomes other than tobacco use. Aims: To compare LGB and non-LGB American adults for the effects of education level on cigarette-smoking status. Methods: Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH; 2013) entered 31,480 American adults who were either non-LGB (n = 29,303, 93.1%) or LGB (n = 2,177; 6.9%). The independent variable was education level. The dependent variable was current established cigarette smoking. Race, ethnicity, age, gender, poverty status, employment, and region were the covariates. LGB status was the moderator. Results: Overall, individuals with higher education level (odds ratio (OR) = 0.69) had lower odds of current established smoking. We found a significant interaction between LGB status and education level suggesting that the protective effect of education level on smoking status is systemically smaller for LGB people than non-LGB individuals (OR for interaction = 1.19). Conclusions: Similar to the patterns that are shown for racial and ethnic minorities, MDRs can be observed for the effects of education level among sexual minorities. In the United States, highly educated LGB adults remain at high risk of smoking cigarettes, a risk which is disproportionate to their education level. In other terms, high education level better helps non-LGB than LGB individuals to avoid cigarette smoking. The result is a relatively high burden of tobacco use in highly educated LGB individuals.

Background: Educational attainment is one of the strongest determinants of subjective health and well-being. Minorities’ Diminished Returns, however, suggests that such an effect may be smaller for the members of racial/ethnic minorities such as Blacks and Hispanics relative to non-Hispanic Whites. Only one study has previously shown that minorities’ diminished returns may also apply to lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals; however, that study has focused on other outcomes (i.e., obesity). Aims: To compare LGB and non-LGB American adults for the effects of educational attainment on subjective health and well-being. Methods: This cross-sectional study used baseline data of 31,480 adults in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH, 2013), a nationally representative study in the United States. The independent variable was educational attainment. The dependent variable was subjective health and well-being, measured using four items. Race, ethnicity, age, gender, poverty status, and employment were the covariates. LGB status was the moderator. Results: Overall, individuals with higher educational attainment had better subjective health and well-being. We found a significant interaction between LGB status and educational attainment which was suggestive of that the boosting effect of high educational attainment on better subjective health and well-being was systemically smaller for LGB than non-LGB individuals. Conclusions: In the United States, highly educated LGB adults experience poor subjective health and well-being, a status that is disproportionate to their educational attainment.

Background: Socioeconomic status (SES) resources protect children and adults against the risk of medical and psychiatric conditions. According to the Minorities’ Diminished Returns theory, however, such protective effects are systemically weaker for the members of racial and ethnic minority groups compared to Whites. Aims: Using a national data set with 15 years of follow up, we compared Black and White youth for the effects of family SES at birth on the risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at age 15. Methods: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS, 1998–2016) is a longitudinal prospective study of urban youth from birth to age 15. This analysis included 2006 youth who were either White (n = 360) or Black (n = 1646). The independent variable was family income, the dependent variable was ADHD at age 15. Child gender, maternal age, and family type at birth were covariates, and race was the focal moderator. We ran logistic regressions in the overall sample and specific to race. Results: In the overall sample, high family income at birth was not associated with the risk of ADHD at age 15, independent of all covariates. Despite this relationship, we found a significant interaction between race and family income at birth on subsequent risk of ADHD, indicating a stronger effect for Whites compared to Blacks. In stratified models, we found a marginally significant protective effect of family SES against the risk of ADHD for White youths. For African American youth, on the other hand, family SES was shown to have a marginally significant risk for ADHD. Conclusions: The health gain that follows family income is smaller for Black than White families, which is in line with the Minorities’ Diminished Returns. The solution to health disparities is not simply policies that aim to reduce the racial gap in SES, because various racial health disparities in the United States are not due to differential access to resources but rather the impact of these resources on health outcomes. Public policies, therefore, should go beyond equalizing access to resources and also address the structural racism and discrimination that impact Blacks’ lives. Policies should fight racism and should help Black families to overcome barriers in their lives so they can gain health from their SES and social mobility. As racism is multi-level, multi-level interventions are needed to tackle diminished returns of SES.

The study examined the determinants of poverty status among small scale cassava processors in South - West, Nigeria using three States (Ogun, Oyo and Ondo). Data were obtained from primary source using a set of structured questionnaire assisted with interview schedule. The multistage sampling technique was used to randomly select 373 respondents for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Foster - Greer Thorbecke (FGT) and probit regression model. Results showed that poverty incidence (Po), poverty depth (P1) and Poverty severity (P2) were 57.1, 16.1 and 5.9 percent respectively, indicating that an average poor small scale cassava processor needed 16.1 percent of the poverty line to get out of poverty. The probit regression model results indicated that gender, cassava processing experience, educational level, age and secondary occupation of the small scale cassava processors with total labour used were the major determinants of poverty in the study area. Government should establish affordable processing centres in order to reduce processing cost and as well stabilize price of cassava products so as to generate more income vis-a-vis alleviate poverty.
