The Breadfruit Institute, a program at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hawaiʻi, is dedicated to conserving, studying, and utilizing breadfruit for food and reforestation purposes. Breadfruit is a versatile fruit that grows on a long-lived tree and provides energy, protein, and essential nutrients. The institute has been working to reintroduce breadfruit through research, propagation, and education, and has distributed over 10,000 trees throughout Hawaii since 2007. Their goal is to promote local food production, improve nutrition, and reduce reliance on imported food. The article also discusses the concept of regenerative agriculture and the challenges faced by breadfruit, such as saltwater intrusion and climate change. Electroporation is a complex, iterative, and nonlinear phenomenon often studied through numerical simulations. In recent years, simulations of tissue electroporation have been conducted with static models. However, the results of a static model simulation are restricted to a fixed protocol signature of the pulsed electric field. In this paper, we describe a novel dynamic model of tissue electroporation that also accounts for tissue dispersion and temperature to allow time-domain simulations. We have implemented the biological dispersion of potato tubers and thermal analysis in a commercial finite-element method software. A cell electroporation model was adapted to account for the increase in tissue conductivity. The model yielded 12 parameters divided into three dynamic states of electroporation. The thermal analysis describes the dependence of tissue conductivity on temperature. The model parameters were evaluated using experiments with vegetal tissue (Solanum tuberosum) under electrochemotherapy protocols. The proposed model can accurately predict the conductivity of tissue under electroporation from 100 to 1000 V/cm. A negligible thermal effect was observed at 1000 V/cm, with a temperature increase of 0.89 ° C. We believe that the proposed model is suitable to describe the electroporation at the tissue level and provides a hint of the effects on the cell membrane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSIONS Food loss and waste estimates are highly inconsistent as a result of methodological and systemic differences. Additionally, the absence of in‐depth evidence surrounding the biological drivers of food loss and waste precludes targeted mitigation action. To address this challenge, we undertook a metanalysis utilising a systematic literature review combined with industry stakeholder surveys to examine the incidence of food loss and waste in the UK fruit and vegetable supply chain between primary production and retail.We estimated that 37% of fruit and vegetables, equivalent to 2.4 Mt of produce, is lost between production and sale. In the UK, primary production is the main stage responsible for these losses (58%), and is dominated by four crops (apple, onion, carrot and potato), which contribute 71% of total food loss and waste. Quality and supply/demand mismatch are the core drivers, combined with limited ability to control postharvest quality decline as a result of technical or economic barriers.Innate biological mechanisms contribute to, and detract from, marketable quality generating food loss risks where these cannot be adequately modified or controlled. Through climate change effects, reduced pesticide availability, changing consumer behaviour and increased pressure to reduce resource/energy inputs during pre‐ and postharvest handling, food loss and waste risk is likely to increase in the short term unless targeted, coordinated action is taken to actively promote its mitigation. © 2024 The Author(s). DEFENSE NO DEATH 1 (DND1) is a cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel protein. Earlier, it was shown that the silencing of DND1 in the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) leads to resistance to late blight, powdery mildew, and gray mold diseases. At the same time, however, it can reduce plant growth and cause leaf necrosis. To obtain knowledge of the molecular events behind the pleiotropic effect of DND1 downregulation in the potato, metabolite and transcriptome analyses were performed on three DND1 silenced lines of the cultivar 'Désirée.' A massive increase in the salicylic acid content of leaves was detected. Concentrations of jasmonic acid and chlorogenic acid and their derivatives were also elevated. Expression of 1866 genes was altered in the same way in all three DND1 silenced lines, including those related to the synthesis of secondary metabolites. The activation of several alleles of leaf rust, late blight, and other disease resistance genes, as well as the induction of pathogenesis-related genes, was detected. WRKY and NAC transcription factor families were upregulated, whereas bHLHs were downregulated, indicating their central role in transcriptome changes. Background: Cognitive and mood status influence both personal and social daily activities, with great impact on life quality, particularly among the elderly population. Aim: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the psycho-affective status concerning eating habits within an elderly population of the Chania area in Crete, Greece. Methods: Cognitive status was assessed in 101 elderly subjects through the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and mood was evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Nutritional status was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Results: Multivariable statistical analysis, after adjustment for age, marital status, education, and comorbidity, highlighted among males a positive association of the MMSE score with vegetable consumption (RR 1.18; 95%CI 1.03‒1.34) and a negative association with potato consumption (RR 0.83; 95%CI 0.72‒0.95). Conversely, among females, no statistically significant association was observed for any food. Further, among males, a protective effect on affective status was identified for chicken meat (RR 0.45; 95%CI 0.27‒0.77), fish (RR 0.41; 95%CI 0.21‒0.82), fruit (RR 0.70; 95%CI 0.52‒0.94), cereals (RR 0.67; 95%CI 0.53‒0.87), and cheese (RR 0.78; 95%CI 0.63‒0.97) consumption. Among females, the adjusted model showed a significant detrimental effect of vegetable consumption (RR 1.33; 95%CI 1.02‒1.73). Conclusion: A predominantly vegetable-based diet—with the notable exception of fruits and legumes—was associated with better cognitive status in males, albeit not in females. A higher intake of fruit, as well as fish, chicken meat, and cheese among males was associated with a better affective status, indicating that adequate protein supply may play a role in maintaining emotional balance. Summary: Protein complexes from edible oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sp.) composed of pleurotolysin A2 (PlyA2) and pleurotolysin B (PlyB) exert toxicity in feeding tests against Colorado potato beetle (CPB) larvae, acting through the interaction with insect‐specific membrane sphingolipid. Here we present a new strategy for crop protection, based on in planta production of PlyA2/PlyB protein complexes, and we exemplify this strategy in construction of transgenic potato plants of cv Désirée. The transgenics in which PlyA2 was directed to the vacuole and PlyB to the endoplasmic reticulum are effectively protected from infestation by CPB larvae without impacting plant performance. These transgenic plants showed a pronounced effect on larval feeding rate, the larvae feeding on transgenic plants being on average five to six folds lighter than larvae feeding on controls. Further, only a fraction (11%–37%) of the larvae that fed on transgenic potato plants completed their life cycle and developed into adult beetles. Moreover, gene expression analysis of CPB larvae exposed to PlyA2/PlyB complexes revealed the response indicative of a general stress status of larvae and no evidence of possibility of developing resistance due to the functional inactivation of PlyA2/PlyB sphingolipid receptors. Fifteen commonly grown potato varieties in Meghalaya, consisting of nine local and six commercial varieties, were screened for their susceptibility against potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella. Based on four parameters, oviposition preference, feeding preference, percentage of survival and number of mines, the varieties were categorised into highly susceptible (HS), moderately susceptible (MS), slightly susceptible (SS), and slightly resistant (SR). Among the 15 varieties, two varieties, Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Megha, were highly susceptible (HS) and only one variety, Lah Ksain, was slightly resistant (SR) based on all the tested parameters. Number of eggs laid had a significantly positive correlation with number of eyes and number of mines. The varieties preferred for feeding had more mines compared to the less preferred ones as indicated by the high positive value of the correlation coefficient between penetrating larvae percentage and number of mines. The paper is devoted to study the dynamics of the infestation of potatoes owing to the occurrence of late blight disease over two successive years (2014 and 2015) in the Terai region of West Bengal. Nonlinear models have been fitted on the potato late blight data (i.e. percent disease index data). The goodness-of-fit tests on different models have been performed by the application of the following criteria, namely coefficient of determination, mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, average relative predictive error, Akaike's information criterion and Bayesian information criterion, respectively. The validation of the models has been carried out by the Shapiro-Wilk test and running test for conforming to the assumptions of normality and independence of the errors, respectively. Based on the application of the goodness-of-fit tests on the models, it was found that for 2014 and 2015, cubic and Gompertz models provided the best-fitted models based on the above sets of data, respectively. Using the best-fitted models referred to above, the values of two important parameters, namely (1) maximum rate of growth of the disease and (2) maximum disease severity, were determined. For the year 2014, it was observed that the maximum rate of growth of the disease occurred at 31 days after planting (DAP) and the maximum disease severity occurred at 48 DAP; however, even after the attainment of the maximum rate of the growth of the disease, the severity of the disease may increase, so it can be concluded that an additional application of fungicidal spray is necessary (when the disease is located in the field). On the other hand, for 2015, we observed that the maximum rate of growth of the disease occurred at 43 DAP. It indicates that any protection measure should be adopted at this stage (here, 43 DAP). The aim of the study was to measure the spectral luminescent characteristics of potato tubers, calculate their energy and statistical parameters, and develop a technique for photoluminescent control of the greening process. For this research, potatoes of the Udacha variety were used. At the beginning of the greening, and then for 3 weeks, the spectral characteristics of potatoes were measured using a hardware-software complex based on a diffraction spectrofluorimeter. We measured the spectral characteristics of excitation in the range of 180–700 nm, and then the spectral characteristics of photoluminescence. The averaged spectral characteristics were used to determine the integral energy (absorption capacity and photoluminescence flux) and statistical (mathematical expectation, dispersion, asymmetry, kurtosis, etc.) parameters. All excitation spectra have several maxima, the largest of which are 362 nm, 422 nm, 264 nm, 482 nm, and 623 nm. Both for the entire investigated spectral range and for the majority of particular ranges, the value of the integral absorbance decreases during the process of greening. The photoluminescence spectra are located in the range of 390–470 nm and are qualitatively similar to each other. In the process of solanization, they shift down, with the largest shift occurring in the first week of solanization. The most suitable parameter for controlling the greening of potatoes is the photoluminescence flux Φ, recorded upon excitation by radiation with a wavelength of 362 nm. The developed technique for luminescent control of potato tubers greening includes excitation with 362 nm radiation and measurement of the integral photoluminescence flux in the range of 390–470 nm, amplification and processing of the received signal, taking into account the a priori obtained dependence Φ(t). Potato production in Mexico is affected by Rhizoctonia solani, causing severe yield losses. The most important criterion for distinguishing R. solani isolates is differentiation by anastomosis groups (AGs). However, the limitations of traditional AG differentiation have prompted the use of DNA sequence analysis as a valuable tool for distinguishing AGs. This study aimed to determine the diversity of anastomosis groups and the aggressiveness of R. solani isolates collected from commercial potato fields in northern Sinaloa, Mexico. A total of 118 R. solani isolates were obtained from symptomatic sprouts and tubers collected from 32 commercial fields distributed in the municipalities of Ahome, Guasave and El Fuerte in northern Sinaloa, Mexico. Fifty-two representative isolates were selected for anastomosis group determination and pathogenicity tests. Phylogenetic analysis with rpb2 gene sequences clearly distinguished 30 isolates belonging to AG-3 PT and 22 isolates to AG-4 HGI. The aggressiveness of these R. solani isolates was evaluated using mini-tubers of potato cv. Fianna, and colonized rice grains were used as inoculum source. The disease severity caused by R. solani on potato plants was evaluated 40 days after emergence. Aggressiveness was estimated as the percentage of necrotic area on underground stems. The results revealed that all R. solani isolates were pathogenic and differences were observed in aggressiveness among the isolates. Of the total of 52 isolates evaluated, 7% were highly aggressive; 61% had intermediate aggressiveness; and 32% exhibited low aggressiveness. These findings regarding the diversity of anastomosis groups and the aggressiveness of R. solani isolates in northern Sinaloa are fundamental for subsequent epidemiology and fungicide resistance studies. This research aims to analyse the performance of two varieties of potato (K. Jyoti, K. Himalini) derived from four plant sources (stem cuttings, in vitro plants, apical rooted cuttings, and sprouts from minitubers) grown using aeroponics to demonstrate their potential as a seed potato source. The genotype (cultivar) and material type for planting (plant origin) had a significant impact on the total number of minitubers generated by the plant, minituber mass, and the overall production of potato growth that takes place in the aeroponic system. Depending on the plant sources, the pattern of distribution of minituber formation was different between the varieties. However, early tuberization was recorded in all plant sources except in vitro plants. Most of the productive traits, like the number of harvests and number of tubers per plant, were much greater in plants generated in vitro, allowing for the full use of plants for minituber production in aeroponic setups. This indicates that in vitro plantlets have the potential to give a viable planting material for seed potato tuber production under aeroponics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Millions of people around the world have iron deficiency, which is one of several important nutritional disorders. Despite recent advances in the prevention and treatment of these deficiencies, it is estimated that over two billion individuals worldwide are at risk for vitamin A, iodine, and/or iron insufficiency. Many major health concerns can result from micronutrient deficits. Lack of iron, folate, B12, and A may cause anemia. Anemia causes weariness, weakness, breathlessness, and disorientation due to low red blood cell or hemoglobin levels. Biofortification, a way to make staple foods with more micronutrients, could help lower malnutrition. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can boost the amount of iron in edible plant tissues by making it easier for iron to get to those tissues. A pot experiment was conducted at ISES, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, to evaluate the impact of well-characterized rhizobacterial strains (Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Bacillus simplex) alone and in combination with L-tryptophan (a plant growth regulator (PGR)) on agronomic, tuber, and nutritional attributes of potato. Results revealed that inoculation significantly enhanced the iron content of potato tubers compared to control plants. When rhizobacteria, L-tryptophan, and iron were added to the soil, the number of tubers grew by 68.24% compared to the control plants where neither PGPR nor PGR was applied. Biofortifying potatoes with microbes can help people get more micronutrients, especially in countries with few resources. These results showed that PGPR can help plants get more Fe from the soil if more Fe is added to the soil. These results provide support for the hypothesis that microbial aided biofortification in crops might reduce human micronutrient insufficiency, particularly in areas with little resources. The journey of the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) from South America to the rest of the world has generated a prolific literature regarding the discovery of this crop, its early consumption and cultivation in the Old World. An important part of that literature concerns the Canary Islands. The islands were the only exception to the Spanish trade monopoly with the New World, which reserved Seville as the only port for imports and exports to the colonies. The first potatoes to arrive from America, both from the Andes and the Chiloé archipelago, passed through the Canary Islands, and it is likely that the islands were initially the place where this crop became acclimatised. The orography, the volcanic soils, the climate and the intermediate photoperiods of the islands contributed to the acclimatisation of potatoes that came from various origins of America. The current biodiversity of potatoes in the Canary Islands includes different cultivars, such as local ones that arrived from South America after the conquest, which have evolved on the islands and are taxonomically classified as Solanum ssp. tuberosum, Solanum ssp. andigena and Solanum chaucha. These potatoes have been preserved by farmers, generation after generation, with between 600 and 800 ha being devoted to their cultivation (mainly on the island of Tenerife), in a traditional way, though with low productivity, often due to high virus pressure. This article traces the history of ancient potatoes in the Canary Islands and investigates in depth the introduction of potatoes in Europe through the Canary Islands. It contributes to describing the cultivated plant genetic resources of the Solanum spp. as well as their current situation and cultivation. It also describes traditional cultivation practices, the importance of the in situ conservation of theses varieties and the threats that affect them such as the Guatemalan potato moth. Pulsed electrical field (PEF) treatment with 1 kJ/kg and 3 kJ/kg of energies was applied to yellow- and purple-fleshed potatoes before frying (180 °C for 2 min). The effects of PEF on oil content, colour and bioactive compounds were investigated. Significant oil reductions were observed for PEF-treated potatoes, ≥ 20% for yellow- and ≥ 24% for purple-fleshed potatoes, and this was also confirmed in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) graph. PEF-treated potatoes had significantly higher phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity than those of untreated samples. Moreover, although the frying reduced total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA) contents of the purple-fleshed potato samples compared to raw potato samples (not PEF-treated and not fried), PEF-treated samples had significantly higher TMA than the untreated (not PEF-treated but fried) samples. Raw samples and fried samples were separated according to PC1 (principal component 1) in chemometric analysis, and fried samples with and without PEF treatment were also separated according to PC2 (principal component 2). When PLS (partial least squares) regression graphs were examined, it was revealed that there was a very good correlation between the oil content and redness (a*) values calculated and estimated by FTIR spectroscopy. Water and nitrogen are widely used agricultural inputs in potato production areas. However, the excessive and inappropriate use of these significant inputs may lead to the rapid depletion of water resources and inappropriate nitrogen leakage. In potato production, insight into the effects of water and nitrogen on the physiological properties will help to overcome these difficulties. This study was therefore conducted to determine the effects of different nitrogen and irrigation levels on the physiological (photosynthesis rate, leaf area index, leaf chlorophyll content, and leaf temperature) characteristics of potato. Field experiments were conducted during the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 primary potato cropping seasons to select the suitable combination of irrigation and fertilization levels for potato production in the Nigde Province of the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. Employing a factorial design, the study encompassed six nitrogen fertilization rates and three irrigation levels. Measurements were systematically recorded at five distinct intervals (40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 days) post-emergence. The outcomes underscored that nitrogen treatments augmented physiological traits, manifesting in heightened photosynthetic rates, chlorophyll content, and leaf area indices, barring leaf temperature, in comparison to the control group (devoid of nitrogen treatments). Full irrigation (I1) yielded the utmost values for both photosynthesis and leaf area index, with I1N3 (full irrigation and intermediate nitrogen supply) was identified as the most efficacious treatment for these parameters. This study identifies the most appropriate nitrogen and irrigation application for optimum physiological yield of the potato for crop producers. However, it is important to note that the study focused solely on one commercial potato cultivar (Agria), and further research on various potato cultivars is recommended for more conclusive results. India is considered the second world's major potato producing and consuming country after China. To determine the processing nutrient quality using standard protocols, 86 diverse potato genotypes were evaluated for different parameters under mid-hill conditions in Himachal Pradesh (Kufri-Shimla), India. Dry matter, specific gravity, TSS, protein, starch, glucose, carotenoids, Vit-C, and anthocyanin contents ranged from 16.35 ~ 28.36%, 1.06 ~ 1.113 (kg/L), 4.86 ~ 6.79 (oBrix), 0.83 ~ 3.43%, 10.59 ~ 20.72%, 10.73 ~ 25.13 (g/kg), 55.89 ~ 516.53 (mg/kg FW), 16.53 ~ 28.23 (mg/kg FW), respectively. Anthocyanin content in the flesh, skin, and whole tubers ranged from 0.07 ~ 8.34, 0 ~ 3.17, and 2.47 ~ 34.80 mg/kg FW, respectively. CP-4104, 4085(6), CP-4116, SSP. Andigina, B. 6739–2, BR 6609–7, MISO VALLEY, JUICE VALLEY, and TPS-13, which contained high dry matter (>20%), starch (>13%), specific gravity (>1.08), and total phenols in whole tubers (<30) are suitable for processing. One-way ANOVA analysis revealed significant differences for all these parameters. White, cream, and too-yellow coloured tubers producing genotypes took first place in this experiment among all-genotype tubers. Our lines namely Andigina, B 6739–2, 4085(6), and CP-4104 may be considered for processing given the quality of their potatoes produced. Based on our results, our study will conclude that several landraces available worldwide can be utilized in future breeding programs to develop new varieties that can produce processing-quality tuber. The present study examined the impact of ethanol pretreatment and drying time on various aspects, including drying characteristics, modeling using thin-layer and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches, color changes during the drying process, shrinkage ratio, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant activity (AA) analysis, as well as ATR-FTIR analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) of the potato slices. Ethanol concentration and pretreatment time had an incredible effect on drying rate and drying time. Higher ethanol concentration and longer pretreatments time provided shorter drying time and a more rapid drying rate. On the other hand, ANN modeling of the potato slices showed better prediction than thin-layer modeling. According to the total color difference (ΔE) values of the samples, ethanol pretreatments had a negative contribution to color properties. Furthermore, the shrinkage ratio of potato samples was affected by drying and ethanol pretreatment time. Diameter shrinkage increased with the increment in ethanol concentration and pretreatment time. TPC and AA of the potato slices showed to decreasing tendency during the drying process. The highest loss of TPC and AA was observed from the samples coded 60 °C + 100 ET 15 and 60 °C + 100 ET 30. Additionally, ATR-FTIR and PCA analysis well exhibited the effect of the ethanol pretreatment and drying process on the composition of the potato slices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the landmark year of 2022, climate activists staged 38 heritage performances in museums and galleries worldwide to raise awareness about the pressing threats of global warming and climate crises. This article explores the advantages that heritage offers to climate activists for conveying their message and analyzes their performances within the framework of heritage. Having redefined art vandalism and suggested new terminology, the research examines all recorded incidents in 2022, with a detailed case study of the "Letzte Generation" group in Germany, who chose the Barberini Museum to throw mashed potatoes on Monet's Meules. The group's performance is analyzed through Professor Laurajane Smith's concept of "heritage as performance," demonstrating different layers of metaphorical, social, and emotional meaning. The survival and productivity of potato plantlets transplanted from in vitro to commercial hydroponic minituber culture are crucial. Mycorrhizal fungi are an efficient tool to enhance potato nutrient uptake, survival, and productivity under these conditions. This study aimed to assess the effect of mycorrhizal fungi on improving the yield of minitubers and nutrient uptake in potatoes transferred from the in vitro environment to the greenhouse. This study was conducted in a greenhouse in Hamadan province, I.R. Iran, in 2013. The experimental design was factorial, including treatments with and without inoculation with the mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis and varying phosphorus (P) concentrations in Hoagland's solution (100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of its maximum content, i.e. 0.965, 0.482, 0.241, and 0.12 mM H2PO4-) with three replications on potato plantlets transferred from in vitro to pots. The results indicated that the highest colonization percentage was achieved with 25% P and inoculation. The highest number of minitubers (8.9), total minituber weight per plant (53.2 grams), plant height (54.6 cm), minituber (0.38%) and leaf (0.363%) P content, minituber (33 mg/kg) and leaf (65 mg/kg) manganese (Mn) content, and minituber (38 mg/kg) and leaf (65 mg/kg) zinc (Zn) content were obtained with inoculation and 75% P of Hoagland nutrient solution, which was statistically comparable to the inoculation with 100% P treatment. In summary, inoculating potato plantlets with mycorrhiza can enhance minituber yield and nutrient uptake and potentially replace approximately 50% of the P requirement in hydroponic solutions. BACKGROUND: The Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata, is a major potato (Solanum tuberosum) pest, infesting over 16 million km2 and causing substantial economic losses. The insect cuticle forms an apical extracellular matrix (ECM) envelope covering exposed organs to direct morphogenesis and confer structural protection. While select chitinase (Cht) genes have proven essential for larval development, their potential activities directing ECM remodeling underlying adult wing maturation remain undefined. RESULTS: We investigated the expression patterns and performed an oral RNA interference (RNAi) screen targeting 19 LdChts in late‐instar L. decemlineata larvae. Subsequently, we assessed their effects on adult eclosion and wing characteristics. Knockdown of LdCht5, LdCht7, LdCht10, LdIDGF2, and LdIDGF4, as well as others from Group IV (LdCht15, LdCht12, LdCht17, and LdCht13) and Groups VII–X (LdCht2, LdCht11, LdCht1, and LdCht3), resulting in shrunken, misshapen elytra with reduced areal density, as well as transverse wrinkling and impaired wing‐tip folding in hindwings. Scanning electron micrographs revealed eroded elytral ridges alongside thinned, ruptured hindwing veins, indicative of mechanical fragility post‐LdCht suppression. Spectroscopic analysis uncovered biomolecular alterations underlying the elytral anomalies, including decreases in peaks representing chitin, proteins, and lipids. This loss of essential ECM components provides evidence for the fragility, wrinkling, and shrinkage observed in the RNAi groups. CONCLUSION: Our findings elucidate the crucial role of chitinases in the turnover of chitinous cuticles on beetle wings, offering insights into RNAi‐based control strategies against this invasive pest. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. RNA methylation plays a central regulatory role in plant biology and is a relatively new target for plant improvement efforts. In nearly all cases, perturbation of the RNA methylation machinery results in deleterious phenotypes. However, a recent landmark paper reported that transcriptome‐wide use of the human RNA demethylase FTO substantially increased the yield of rice and potatoes. Here, we have performed the first independent replication of those results and demonstrated broader transferability of the trait, finding increased flower and fruit count in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. We also performed RNA‐seq of our FTO‐transgenic plants, which we analyzed in conjunction with previously published datasets to detect several previously unrecognized patterns in the functional and structural classification of the upregulated and downregulated genes. From these, we present mechanistic hypotheses to explain these surprising results with the goal of spurring more widespread interest in this promising new approach to plant engineering. Potato is the most widely grown non-grain crop and ranks as the third most significant global food crop following rice and wheat. Despite its long history of cultivation over vast areas, slow breeding progress and environmental stress have led to a scarcity of high-yielding potato varieties. Enhancing the quality and yield of potato tubers remains the ultimate objective of potato breeding. However, conventional breeding has faced challenges due to tetrasomic inheritance, high genomic heterozygosity, and inbreeding depression. Recent advancements in molecular biology and functional genomic studies of potato have provided valuable insights into the regulatory network of physiological processes and facilitated trait improvement. In this review, we present a summary of identified factors and genes governing potato growth and development, along with progress in potato genomics and the adoption of new breeding technologies for improvement. Agricultural environments are becoming increasingly contaminated with plastic pollution. Plastics in the environment can also provide a unique habitat for microbial biofilm, termed the 'plastisphere', which can also support the persistence of human pathogens such as Salmonella. Human enteric Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium can enter agricultural environments via flooding or from irrigation with contaminated water. Using soil mesocosms we quantified the ability of S. Typhimurium to persist on microplastic beads in two agriculturally relevant soils, under ambient and repeat flood scenarios. S. Typhimurium persisted in the plastisphere for 35 days in both podzol and loamy soils; while during multiple flood events was able to survive in the plastisphere for up to 21 days. S. Typhimurium could dissociate from the plastisphere during flooding events and migrate through soil in leachate, and importantly could colonise new plastic particles in the soil, suggesting that plastic pollution in agricultural soils can aid S. Typhimurium persistence and facilitate further dissemination within the environment. The potential for increased survival of enteric human pathogens in agricultural and food production environments due to plastic contamination poses a significant public health risk, particularly in potato or root vegetable systems where there is the potential for direct contact with crops. This paper presents the findings of a study of the pelleting process of pine sawdust with the addition of waste in the form of potato pulp (as a natural binder), in the context of producing fuel pellets. The process of pelleting was carried out for sawdust and for a mixture of sawdust and potato pulp (10, 15, 20, and 25%). The highest moisture content was obtained in the case of pellets produced from a mixture of straw with a 25% potato pulp content, i.e., 26.54% (with a potato pulp moisture content of 85.08%). Increasing the potato pulp content in a mixture with sawdust from 10 to 25% reduced the power demand of the pelletizer by approx. 20% (from 7.35 to 5.92 kW). The obtained density values for pellets made from a mixture of sawdust and potato pulp (over 1000 kg∙m−3) with a potato pulp content of 10% make it possible to conclude that the obtained pellets meet the requirements of the ISO 17225-2:2021-11 standard. Increasing the potato pulp content from 0 to 25% caused a slight decrease in the heat of combustion, i.e., from 20.45 to 20.32 MJ∙kg−1, as well as in the calorific value, from 19.02 to 18.83 MJ∙kg−1 (both for dry sawdust matter and the mixture). The results of the laboratory tests were used to verify the densification process of mixtures of sawdust and potato pulp under industrial conditions at the PANBAH plant, using pelleting mixtures with a 5%, 10%, and 25% content of potato pulp. Industrial research also confirmed that the use of the addition of potato pulp in a mixture with sawdust significantly reduces the power demand of the pelletizer, and it also increases the kinetic strength of the obtained pellets. Simple Summary: The problem of food and agricultural waste, known as agro-food byproducts (AFB), is growing, and researchers are trying to find ways to turn this waste into something useful. One promising solution is acidogenic fermentation, a process that converts AFB into volatile fatty acids (VFAs) that can potentially be added to animal feed, providing energy and reducing reliance on traditional feed components like silage and concentrate. The main goal of this study was to determine if adding VFAs to ruminant (for example, cow) feed would affect digestion and fermentation in the rumen (the first stomach). Using a lab method called the Menke gas method, we tested how VFAs impact gas production, including methane. The results showed that VFAs can replace some of the energy usually provided by silage and concentrate without disrupting the fermentation process. Specifically, replacing 10% of the energy from silage and 20% from concentrate with VFAs in a mixed feed could reduce methane emissions while supplying enough energy for the animals. This approach benefits society by reducing waste from food and agriculture, lowering methane emissions from livestock, and producing more sustainable meat and dairy products. The growing demand for sustainable ruminant feed alternatives has motivated the application of bioconversion approaches for the valorization of agro-food byproducts (AFB) into feed additives and supplements. The present study thoroughly investigated substituting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) obtained from acidogenic fermentation (AF) of AFB as an energy source in ruminant feed. Rumen in vitro digestibility assays were conducted utilizing the gas production method, wherein the VFAs obtained from AF of apple pomace and potato protein liquor was substituted with partial silage and concentrate energy at levels of 10%, 20%, and 30%. The results indicate that substituting 20% of the concentrate's energy with VFA mixture significantly reduced methane production and had no adverse effect on the production and accumulation of VFAs in the simulated rumen media. Conversely, replacing 10% of the silage energy with VFAs led to a decrease in methane production and further enhanced the production of VFAs. Readily digestible VFAs in ruminant feed have the potential to enhance energy availability and sustainability in ruminant farming practices, aligning with the principles of circular economy and waste valorization. Exposing cells to intense and brief electric field pulses can modulate cell permeability, a phenomenon termed electroporation. When applied in medical treatments of diseases like cancer and cardiac arrhythmias, depending on level of cellular destruction, it is also referred to as irreversible electroporation (IRE) or Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA). For ablation device testing, several pulse parameters need to be characterized in a comprehensive manner to assess lesion boundary and efficacy. Overly aggressive voltages and application numbers increase animal burden. The potato tuber is a widely used initial model for the early testing of electroporation. The aim of this study is to characterize and refine bench testing for the ablation outcomes of PFA in this simplistic vegetal model. For in vitro assays, several pulse parameters like voltage, duration, and frequency were modulated to study effects not only on 2D ablation area but also 3D depth and volume. As PFA is a relatively new technology with minimal thermal effects, we also measured temperature changes before, during, and after ablation. Data from experiments were supplemented with in silico modeling to examine E-field distribution. We have estimated the irreversible electroporation threshold in Solanum Tuberosum to be at 240 V/cm. This bench testing platform can screen several pulse recipes at early stages of PFA device development in a rapid and high-throughput manner before proceeding to laborious trials for IRE medical devices. Environmental concerns and climate protection are gaining increasing emphasis nowadays. A growing number of industries and scientific fields are involved in this trend. Sustainable electronics is an emerging research strand. Environmentally friendly and biodegradable or biobased raw materials can be used for the development of green flexible electronic devices, which may serve to reduce the pollution generated by plastics and electronics waste. In this work, we present cytocompatible, electrically conductive structures of nanocarbon water-soluble composites based on starch films. To accomplish this goal, potato starch-based films with glycerol as a plasticiser were developed along with a water-soluble vehicle for nanocarbon-based electroconductive pastes specifically dedicated to screen printing technology. Summary Ethylene response factors (ERFs) have been associated with biotic stress in Arabidopsis, while their function in non‐model plants is still poorly understood. Here we investigated the role of potato ERF StPti5 in plant immunity. We show that StPti5 acts as a susceptibility factor. It negatively regulates potato immunity against potato virus Y and Ralstonia solanacearum, pathogens with completely different modes of action, and thereby has a different role than its orthologue in tomato. Remarkably, StPti5 is destabilised in healthy plants via the autophagy pathway and accumulates exclusively in the nucleus upon infection. We demonstrate that StEIN3 and StEIL1 directly bind the StPti5 promoter and activate its expression, while synergistic activity of the ethylene and salicylic acid pathways is required for regulated StPti expression. To gain further insight into the mode of StPti5 action in attenuating potato defence responses, we investigated transcriptional changes in salicylic acid deficient potato lines with silenced StPti5 expression. We show that StPti5 regulates the expression of other ERFs and downregulates the ubiquitin‐proteasome pathway as well as several proteases involved in directed proteolysis. This study adds a novel element to the complex puzzle of immune regulation, by deciphering a two‐level regulation of ERF transcription factor activity in response to pathogens. Societal Impact Statement Summary Can modern breeding technologies, such as genome editing, contribute to reduced pesticide usage? This question has been accentuated by a recent legal proposal to exempt genome‐edited plants from the strict regulations applied to classical genetically modified (GM) crops within the European Union (EU). Using official statistics on crop cultivation and pesticide usage for two example crops commonly grown in Sweden, we calculate that cereal farmers collectively could save up to 70 million € in pesticide usage for wheat alone and that a late blight‐resistant potato could reduce pesticide usage by over 80% provided that the EU legislation is amended.The European Commission has set goals to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, and one way to meet these goals in the agricultural sector is to breed disease‐resistant crops. Here, we ask whether modern breeding technologies, for example, genome editing using site‐directed nucleases, can contribute to these goals. This question has been accentuated by recent legal proposals in the European Union (EU) and several other jurisdictions worldwide to exempt genome‐edited plants from the strict regulations often applied to classical genetically modified (GM) crops. Using official statistics on crop cultivation and pesticide usage for two example crops commonly grown in Sweden (wheat and potato), we show that cereal farmers collectively could potentially save up to 70 million € in pesticide usage for wheat alone and that a late blight‐resistant potato could reduce pesticide usage by over 80% provided that the EU legislation is amended. (1) Background: Mianning ham is a dry-cured ham from Southwest China, known for its distinct regional characteristics and delicious taste. It is particularly favored by consumers due to its safety, as no artificial nitrites are added during processing. The microbial changes during its different processing stages significantly influence the final product's flavor. This study aims to investigate the changes in microbial communities and flavor compounds across the nine stages of Mianning ham production, from raw material preparation to salting, drying, fermentation, and maturation, using 16S and ITS sequencing, as well as solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS). The goal is to explore the correlation between these changes and provide a basis for process improvement from the initial raw material preparation. (2) Results: The microbiota of Mianning ham across different processing stages mainly consisted of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Ascomycota. A total of 324 volatile compounds were identified, of which 27 were key contributors to the ham's flavor. Aldehydes contributed the most to flavor, with octanal, trans-2-nonenal, and trans, trans-2,4-decadienal being the most significant contributors at various stages. Mature Mianning ham, fermented for 1–3 years, exhibited fresh grass and earthy aromas, buttery and fatty flavors, and a distinctive roasted potato note. Correlation analysis revealed that Cobetia was the primary bacterial contributor to the main flavor compounds, especially prominent in the second year of fermentation. Among fungi, Yamadazyma and Aspergillus positively influenced several key aldehyde flavor compounds throughout the processing stages, significantly contributing to the flavor profile of Mianning ham. (3) Conclusions: Correlation analysis showed that the Mianning ham that matured for two years had the richest and most characteristic flavor. The positive and consistent impact of fungi on the ham's flavor suggests that they may warrant further research and application in Mianning ham production. This provides a theoretical basis for improving the flavor quality and enhancing the market competitiveness of Mianning ham. One of the key features of Mianning ham is its substantial accumulation of hydrocarbons, which surpasses that of hams from other regions in China. A notable characteristic of Mianning ham processing is the absence of artificially added nitrites as antioxidants and color fixatives. Viral diseases of potatoes are among the main problems causing deterioration in the quality of tubers and loss of yield. The growth and development of potato plants largely depend on soil moisture. Prevention strategies require comprehensive protection against pathogens and abiotic stresses, including modeling the beneficial microbiome of agroecosystems combining microorganisms and immunostimulants. Chitosan and its derivatives have great potential for use in agricultural engineering due to their ability to induce plant immune responses. The effect of chitosan conjugate with caffeic acid (ChCA) in combination with Bacillus subtilis 47 on the transcriptional activity of PR protein genes and changes in the proteome of potato plants during potato virus Y (PVY) infection and drought was studied. The mechanisms of increasing the resistance of potato plants to PVY and lack of moisture are associated with the activation of transcription of genes encoding PR proteins: the main protective protein (PR-1), chitinase (PR-3), thaumatin-like protein (PR-5), protease inhibitor (PR-6), peroxidase (PR-9), and ribonuclease (PR-10), as well as qualitative and quantitative changes in the plant proteome. The revealed activation of the expression of marker genes of systemic acquired resistance and induced systemic resistance under the influence of combined treatment with B. subtilis and chitosan conjugate indicate that, in potato plants, the formation of resistance to viral infection in drought conditions proceeds synergistically. By two-dimensional electrophoresis of S. tuberosum leaf proteins followed by MALDI-TOF analysis, 10 proteins were identified, the content and composition of which differed depending on the experiment variant. In infected plants treated with ChCA, the synthesis of proteinaceous RNase P 1 and oxygen-evolving enhancer protein 2 was enhanced in conditions of normal humidity, and 20 kDa chaperonin and TMV resistance protein N-like was enhanced in conditions of lack of moisture. The virus coat proteins were detected, which intensively accumulated in the leaves of plants infected with potato Y-virus. ChCA treatment reduced the content of these proteins in the leaves, and in plants treated with ChCA in combination with Bacillus subtilis, viral proteins were not detected at all, both in conditions of normal humidity and lack of moisture, which suggests the promising use of chitosan derivatives in combination with B. subtilis bacteria in the regulation of plant resistance. High temperatures during the crop growing season are becoming more frequent and unpredictable, resulting in reduced crop productivity and quality. Heat stress disrupts plant metabolic processes that affect cell membrane composition and integrity. Cell membrane permeability, ion leakage, and heat shock proteins have been evaluated to screen for heat tolerance in plants. In potatoes, it is unclear whether leaf membrane stability under heat stress is correlated with underground tuber productivity and quality. The main goal of this study was to evaluate if leaf membrane relative electrolyte conductivity (REC) under high temperatures could be used to identify heat-tolerant potato genotypes. Electrolyte leakage assays, correlation estimations, and genome-wide association studies were carried out in 215 genotypes. Expression levels of small heat shock protein 18 (sHSP18) were evaluated in the heat-sensitive potato variety Russet Burbank and compared with those of the heat-tolerant variety Vanguard Russet using Western blotting. Significant differences were observed among genotypes for leaf membrane REC under extreme heat (50°C); REC values ranged from 47.0–99.5%. Leaf membrane REC was positively correlated with tuber external and internal defects and negatively correlated with yield. REC was negatively correlated with the content of several tuber minerals, such as nitrogen, magnesium, and manganese. Eleven quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified for leaf membrane REC, explaining up to 13.8% of the phenotypic variance. Gene annotation in QTL areas indicated associations with genes controlling membrane solute transport and plant responses to abiotic stresses. Vanguard Russet had lower leaf REC and higher expression of sHSP18 under high-temperature stress. The present investigation on a pre-harvest spray of alpha-1-naphthalene acetic acid (alpha-NAA) on potato crops in relation to improving the storage ability was undertaken in the Botany Department of Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, India on Solanum tuberosum cv. 'Kufri Chandermukhi'. Sprout initiation was observed in tubers on the 20th day, with 4.0 x 10-4 M application of alpha-NAA during storage. In control, it was prominently noticed on the first observation made on the 10th day (0.8 mm), whereas in the treated one, it was very small. These treatments were able to check the percentage of sprouting. Rottage was observed after the 40th day of storage. The decline in starch content was less in the treatment group than in the control group up to the 20 days, but a reverse trend was witnessed after that compared with initial values. The starch contents were significantly higher in treated tubers than untreated in most stages. After 40 days, per cent cumulative physiological weight loss values were 9.20, 9.62, and 10.33% in 4.0 x 10-4 M alpha-NAA, 5.5 x 10-4 M alpha-NAA, and control, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leucinodes orbonalis causes huge losses in eggplant (Solanum melongena) making its cultivation economically difficult. During off-season insect pests survive and multiply on alternate hosts, so it is indispensable to identify all of the sources of carry-over for efficient management. This study aimed at identifying the carry-over sources of L. orbonalis and consisted of three components, namely rapid roving surveys for collecting and identifying alternate/ collateral hosts, free-choice test for host preference studies, and carry-over from eggplant crop to other hosts. During roving survey, shoot samples of the possible alternate hosts were collected from farmers' field of the six districts to confirm the presence of the larval stages of L. orbonalis. Out of the collected alternate hosts, eight were found to harbor the L. orbonalis, four of which were vegetables and four were weed hosts with majority of them belonging to family Solanaceae. Based on free-choice test, among the eight alternate hosts identified from survey studies, Solanum nigrum, Solanum tuberosum and Solanum lycopersicum were the most preferred hosts. For the third component of the study, pheromone traps were installed in different season eggplant crops. Based on the pheromone trap catch, ratoon crop left standing as such was the major source of carry-over, followed by pruned ratoon crop and uprooted stalks. In conclusion it is imperative to manage alternate hosts, and ratoon crop and uprooted stalks of eggplant for efficient management of the L. orbonalis with least use of chemical insecticides. The application of phyto-nanotechnology in horticulture is a sustainable tool for agriculture due to its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly properties. Essential micro-elements have been used as nano-fertilizer to enhance crop production. Fine-tuning of the nanoparticle dose is also recognized as the critical factor determining their impact on plant growth. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxide nanoparticles (NPs) on potato plants physiological and biochemical changes under the hydroponic conditions. Observations revealed that the plant growing in the adapted hydroponics media (supplemented with 4.0 mg L− 1 Fe3O4 NPs and 1.0 mg L− 1 MnO2 NPs instead of original Fe and Mn salt respectively) improved various physiological and biochemical parameters, total biomass, and tuber yield compared to the untreated control. The growth-promoting impact of metal oxide NPs (hereafter refers as MONPs) simultaneously induced the activity of various antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, POD) and contributed to the adequate reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content relative to the untreated control plants. This indicated that the application of MONPs could improve the potato yield per plant via modulating the plant antioxidant machinery. In addition, the application of MONPs as nano-nutrient appreciably improved the photosynthetic efficiency of plants via modulating the photosynthetic pigment content like Chl a, Chl b, total Chl, ratio Chl a/b, carotenoids as well as soluble sugar. The SEM-EDX elemental mapping also showed a slightly higher content of metals ions (Fe, Mn, and Ca) in the root and shoot tissues, however, the TEM analysis also confirmed absorption as well as transportation of MONPs in the root tissues growing in the presence of MONPs. Potato production is being affected by high temperature stresses worldwide due to global warming. The biological basis of carbohydrate metabolism and reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity in potato tubers under high temperature stress is yet to be clearly understood. We evaluated the activities of two of the most important primary ROS members: superoxide (O2.−) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and their scavengers to understand the effects of heat stress on the changes of carbohydrates in growing tubers of five potato varieties including heat-tolerant and heat‐susceptible check varieties. The enzymatic ROS-scavengers were found to be differentially activated in these genotypes. The detoxification mechanism was more efficient in dual-stress (heat and salt) tolerant variety compared to single-stress tolerant variety. The antioxidant activity was increased by several folds in the tolerant variety compared to the susceptible variety. Storage starch accumulation and its composition was affected by O2.− and H2O2 metabolisms in potato tuber. The findings will be helpful in understanding the biological basis of the effect of ROS-detoxification on starch accumulation in growing tubers under heat stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In agriculture, there are various types of progress, and trends in agricultural production include the minimized use of chemicals and the production of food with favorable taste and increased nutritional value. In this study, during a three-year field experiment on potato cultivar Agria, ozone was applied in a fumigation process with an invented device, and hydrogen peroxide was applied as a foliar spray. The yield of ozone-treated plants was lower than of the control plants. Hydrogen peroxide treatment did not affect the yield of potatoes. Ozone fumigation had a positive effect on the chemical composition of tubers, while in the case of hydrogen peroxide, this effect occurred only in one year of research and only for selected parameters. The antioxidant response of plants, which is a defense response to artificially induced oxidative stress, contributes to the production of antioxidant-like metabolites by increasing the antiradical activity of crops by 3–23%, increasing the total content of polyphenolic compounds by 12–108%, and increasing the total antioxidant capacity by 23–42%. Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) constitute one of the most economically important annual crops. In terms of tissue culture, potato microtubers (MTs) have a number of advantages over conventional plants. These advantages include their small size, which greatly facilitates storage, transport, and germplasm exchange compared to in vitro plants. One effective solution for the production and mass propagation of healthy MTs is the use of temporary immersion systems (TISs). In this study, in a SETISTM system containing kinetin/gibberellic acid (GA)/indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) hormones, we investigated the effects of different nutrient media on the morphological characteristics of potato explants and MTs. We determined the optimal cycling duration (3 h) with an immersion frequency of 2 min. The results revealed that the optimal nutrient medium for culturing single-node potato explants in a SETISTM bioreactor was the M7 medium containing kinetin (2 mg/L), GA (0.5 mg/L), and IBA (0.5 mg/L). The optimal nutrient medium for obtaining potato MTs was the M1 medium (hormone-free) with a high concentration of sucrose (9%) at 18 °C under dark growing conditions. Thus, a universal nutrient medium, employed in a bioreactor, was selected for the mass propagation of potato MTs for both domestic and foreign potato varieties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the yield-increasing mechanism of mechanized potato planting with corn straw mulching, a two-year (2021 and 2022) field experiment was conducted to study the effects of mechanized no-tillage with straw mulching on potato yield and water use efficiency. This experiment included mechanized no-tillage potato planting with corn straw mulch covering (JG), plastic film mulching (HM), and open flat planting (CK). The results showed that mechanical no-tillage with straw mulching significantly affected soil water content in the 0–100 cm soil layer, yield, and water use efficiency (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in yield between JG and HM, but it was significantly higher than that of CK. The yield of JG was 3.09~12.27% higher than that of CK. The yield increase was mainly achieved by increasing the potato weight per plant (0.697~0.862 **) and the average single potato weight (0.048~0.631). The tuber weight per plant was positively correlated with the plant height at the seedling stage (0.03~0.92 **) and positively correlated with the dry weight of stems and leaves at the tuber expansion stage and starch accumulation stage (0.74 **~0.95 **). It was negatively correlated with the number of branches at the tuber formation stage (−0.33~−0.88 **). Compared with CK, JG could significantly improve the water use efficiency of potatoes and reduce water consumption during the whole growth period of crops. In 2021, JG was 6.5% higher than CK, and HM was 6.88% lower than CK. In 2022, JG and HM increased water use efficiency by 26.17% and 14.50% compared with CK. When HM is applied in heavy soil areas, soil compaction can easily occur, which affects seedling emergence and reduces yield. At the same time, JG has strong adaptability to soil types and good yield stability. The acquisition of vegetation coverage information is crucial for crop field management, and utilizing visible light spectrum vegetation indices to extract vegetation coverage information is a commonly used method. However, most visible light spectrum vegetation indices do not fully consider the relationships between the red, green, and blue bands during their construction, making it difficult to ensure the accurate extraction of coverage information throughout the crop's entire growth cycle. To rapidly and accurately obtain potato vegetation coverage information, drones were used in this study to obtain high-resolution digital orthoimages of potato growth stages. Based on the differences in the grayscale values of potato plants, soil, shadows, and drip irrigation belts, this study presents a combination index of blue and green bands (BGCI) and a combination index of red and green bands (RGCI). The vegetation index intersection method was used with 10 vegetation information indices to extract vegetation coverage, and the differences in extraction accuracy were compared with those of the maximum entropy method and bimodal histogram method. Based on the high-precision fraction vegetation coverage (FVC) extraction results, the Pearson correlation coefficient method and random forest feature selection were used to screen 10 vegetation and 24 texture features, and the top six vegetation indices most strongly correlated with the FVC were selected for potato growth stage FVC estimation and accuracy verification. A high-precision potato vegetation coverage estimation model was successfully established. This study revealed that during the potato tuber formation and expansion stages, the BGCI combined with the vegetation index intersection method achieved the highest vegetation coverage extraction accuracy, with overall accuracies of 99.61% and 98.84%, respectively. The RGCI combined with the vegetation index intersection method achieved the highest accuracy, 98.63%, during the maturation stage. For the potato vegetation coverage estimation models, the model based on the BGCI achieved the highest estimation accuracy (R2 = 0.9116, RMSE = 5.7903), and the RGCI also achieved good accuracy in terms of vegetation coverage estimation (R2 = 0.8987, RMSE = 5.8633). In the generality verification of the models, the R2 values of the FVC estimation models based on the BGCI and RGCI were both greater than 0.94. Summary: Potato flour/gelatine films in different ratios (6:0, 5:1, 4:1, 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1) were prepared and their properties were examined in this study. Potato flour film‐forming dispersion without gelatine showed the highest particle size and apparent viscosity. As the gelatine concentration increased, the composite films became smoother and more transparent. Gelatine incorporated with potato flour films reduced the retrogradation enthalpy and glass transition temperature, leading to the low tensile strength and high elongation at break. Although water content and water solubility index increased with the higher gelatine concentration, water vapour permeability of composite films decreased from 14.59 × 10−13 gm−1s−1Pa−1 to 5.83 × 10−13 gm−1s−1Pa−1. In addition, it was noted that water contact angle increased from 24.50° to 102.33° as gelatine concentration increased from 0% (6:0) to 50% (1:1). Plasmopara viticola is controlled by fungicides with different modes of action, which include zoxamide. Zoxamide was developed in 1998 by Dow AgroSciences LIC (Indianapolis, IN) and has been commercialized since 2001 by Rohm and Haas Company. This fungicide is highly effective against oomycetes, used for foliar application in vine crops, potato, and other vegetables to control oomycete-induced diseases. Zoxamide acts by causing mitotic arrest by binding to β-tubulin, inhibiting tubulin polymerization and cell division of the pathogen. In the past three decades, the management of fungicide resistance has emerged as a significant concern for both growers and regulatory authorities; this is primarily due to the substantial increase in resistance, in terms of occurrence and spread, towards most fungicide groups. The monitoring of the effectiveness of fungicides is the only way to accurately identify as soon as possible the onset of resistance. In this study, we were interested in tracking the changes in the sensitivity of zoxamide to P. viticola populations collected during a 6-year monitoring (2017–2022) in two Italian locations: the autonomous province of Trento and the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Bioassays on leaf discs were carried out, and EC50 and MIC values were elaborated. From our results, zoxamide showed for a long period of time high sensitivity, but over the last years we observed a change, as in 2022 most of the samples tested in these two regions showed MIC > 100 mg L−1. Rhizosphere microbial communities play a substantial role in plant productivity. We studied the rhizosphere bacteria and fungi of 51 distinct potato cultivars grown under similar greenhouse conditions using a metabarcoding approach. As expected, individual cultivars were the most important determining factor of the rhizosphere microbial composition; however, differences were also obtained when grouping cultivars according to their growth characteristics. We showed that plant growth characteristics were related to deterministic and stochastic assembly processes of bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. The bacterial genera Arthrobacter and Massilia (known to produce indole acetic acid and siderophores) exhibited greater relative abundance in high- and medium-performing cultivars. Bacterial co-occurrence networks were larger in the rhizosphere of these cultivars and were characterized by a distinctive combination of plant beneficial Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria along with a module of diazotrophs namely Azospira, Azoarcus , and Azohydromonas. Conversely, the network within low-performing cultivars revealed the lowest nodes, hub taxa, edges density, robustness, and the highest average path length resulting in reduced microbial associations, which may potentially limit their effectiveness in promoting plant growth. Our findings established a clear pattern between plant productivity and the rhizosphere microbiome composition and structure for the investigated potato cultivars, offering insights for future management practices. The fundamental exchange of water for carbon lays the groundwork for understanding the interplay between carbon and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystems, providing valuable insights into global water and carbon balances and vegetation growth. Inherent water use efficiency (IWUE) was used as a study framework of the diurnal patterns and degree of coupling of carbon and water exchange to investigate the net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) responses of three water regime potato cropping systems [full-irrigation (FI), deficit-irrigation (DI), and rainfed (RF)] in Cundinamarca, Colombia. The eddy covariance method was used to determine CO2 and water fluxes, surface resistances, and the omega decoupling factor (Ω). Additionally, leaf area index (LAI), and specific leaf area (SLA) were assessed to determine the canopy influence on carbon and water exchange. The highest carbon sink activity (NEE = -311.96 ± 12.82 g C m−2) at FI, is primarily attributed to a larger canopy with high autotrophic activity and low internal resistance. This supported a highly coupled and synchronized exchange between evapotranspiration (ET) and gross primary production (GPP), as reflected in the highest IWUE (4.7 mg C kPa s−1 kg−1 H2O). In contrast, the lower sink capacity at DI (NEE = − 17.3 ± 4.6 g C m−2) and the net carbon source activity from RF (NEE = 187.21 ± 3.84 g C m−2) were related to a smaller leaf area available for water and carbon exchange, resulting in lower IWUE (2.3 and 1.01 mg C kPa s−1 kg−1 H2O, respectively) and a decoupled and desynchronized gas exchange caused by unbalanced restrictions on ET and GPP fluxes. These results provide new information on carbon–water interactions in potatoes and improve the understanding of carbon sequestration and drought effects on potato sink activity. The genus Clavibacter (family Microbacteriaceae) includes gram‐positive actinobacterial species infecting diverse agricultural crops such as alfalfa, maize, pepper, potato, tomato and wheat. Clavibacter tessellarius, causing bacterial mosaic of wheat, was reported for the first time in 1976 in Nebraska (United States). Since then, the pathogen was thought to be restricted to North America (Canada and the United States). While bacterial strains suspected to be C. tessellarius have occasionally been isolated from wheat samples outside North America, occurrence of the pathogen in the Old World has not yet been confirmed by the plant protection authorities. In spring 2020 (January to May) dozens of wheat fields with young plants showing leaf chlorosis and mild mosaic symptoms were surveyed and sampled in southern Iran. Among 192 surveyed wheat fields, gram‐positive, orange‐pigmented actinobacterial strains were isolated from samples of 53 fields. Altogether, 61 bacterial strains were identified as C. tessellarius based on the phenotypic features, PCR‐based molecular tests and pathogenicity assays. Multilocus sequence analysis of five housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, gyrB, ppk and rpoB) using 10 representative strains from diverse geographic areas in southern Iran confirmed the phylogenetic status of the strains within C. tessellarius. Our data indicate that the bacterial mosaic pathogen occurs in four southern Iranian provinces including Bushehr, Fars, Kerman and Khuzestan. Thus, occurrence of C. tessellarius outside North America is confirmed. Virus diseases represent important economic threats to seed potato production worldwide, yet relatively little is known of their epidemiology at the landscape‐scale. In this study, data was compiled from the Scottish national seed potato classification scheme on the incidence of 10 different potato viruses for the years 2009–2022. A co‐occurrence analysis identified that 12 virus species pairs occurred together more often than expected by chance, and potato blackleg was positively associated with eight potato viruses. ArcGIS was used to investigate spatial and spatiotemporal variation in incidence rates of the three most prevalent viruses (potato virus Y, potato leaf roll virus and potato virus A), and this revealed prominent geographic differences in long‐term disease outcomes. Focusing on potato virus Y as the most commonly occurring single infection, interpretable machine‐learning techniques were used to investigate the influence of key crop, management and environmental factors on patterns of incidence in space and time. The results showed that health characteristics of seed stocks were among the most important predictors of incidence, along with blackleg infection, several management features, cultivar resistance, distance to the nearest seed and ware crop, temperature variables and several soil features. This approach provides a comprehensive overview of potato viruses in Scotland, a deeper understanding of epidemiological risk factors at the landscape‐scale and a forecast model that could serve as the basis of a decision support tool for improved management of potato virus Y.
