Different forearm postures can modulate corticospinal excitability. However, there is no consensus on whether handedness plays a role in such a mechanism. This study investigated the effects of 3 forearm postures (pronation, neutral, and supination) on the corticospinal excitability of muscles from the dominant and nondominant upper limbs. Surface electromyography was recorded from the abductor digiti minimi, flexor pollicis brevis, and flexor carpi radialis from both sides of 12 right-handed volunteers. Transcranial magnetic stimulation pulses were applied to each muscle's hotspot in both cerebral hemispheres. Motor-evoked potential peak-to-peak amplitude and latency and resting motor threshold were measured. The data were evaluated by analysis of variance. The level of significance was set at 5%. The resting motor threshold was similar for the 3 muscles and both sides. Motor-evoked potential peak-to-peak amplitude from flexor pollicis brevis was lower during supination, and the dominant upper limb latency was longer. The flexor carpi radialis presented lower motor-evoked potential peak-to-peak amplitudes for neutral and shorter latencies during supination. Abductor digiti minimi seemed not to be affected by posture or side. Musculoskeletal modeling, typically implemented using marker-based systems in laboratory environments, is commonly used for noninvasive estimations of loads. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have become an alternative for the evaluation of kinematics. However, estimates of spine joint contact forces using IMUs have yet to be thoroughly evaluated. Dynamics tasks and static postures from activities of daily living were captured on 11 healthy subjects using both systems simultaneously. Spine kinematics obtained from IMU- and marker-based systems and L4–L5 joint contact forces were compared. Lateral bending resulted in a weak agreement with significant differences between the 2 systems (P =.02, average root mean-squared error = 4.81), whereas flexion–extension and axial rotation exhibited the highest agreement with no significant differences (P <.05, average root mean-squared error = 5.51 and P <.31, average root mean-squared error = 5.08, respectively). All tasks showed excellent correlations (R2 =.76–.99) in estimated loads between systems. Differences in predicted loads at the L4–L5 were only observed during flexion–extension (1041 N vs 947 N, P =.0004) and walking with weights (814 N vs 727 N, P =.004). Different joint reaction force outcomes were obtained in 2 of the 8 tasks between systems, suggesting that IMUs can be robust tools allowing for convenient and less expensive evaluations and for longitudinal assessments inside and outside the laboratory setting. The purpose of this phenomenological, qualitative, temporal study was to examine the effects of a semester-long physical theater class on body schema (body posture, awareness, confidence, expression) among eight college students. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted twice to qualitatively collect the study's data. Two themes emerged from the qualitative/phenomenological data analysis, showcasing how the participants' body schema improved. Based on the first theme, the students emphasized the importance of physical theater in improving body posture, awareness, confidence and comfort during physical theater and their daily functions. Practically learning the body schema of their character was key to excellence in performance. According to the second theme, the participants learned how to express emotions using their whole body and not only their face. They also managed to switch emotions naturally and corporeally. Postural assessments of the lumbar spine lack valuable information about its properties. The purpose of this study was to assess neutral zone (NZ) characteristics via in vivo lumbar spine passive stiffness and relate NZ characteristics to standing lumbar lordosis. A comparison was made between those that develop low back pain during prolonged standing (pain developers) and those that do not (nonpain developers). Twenty-two participants with known pain status stood on level ground, and median lumbar lordosis angle was calculated. Participants were then placed in a near-frictionless jig to characterize their passive stiffness curve and location of their NZ. Overall, both pain developers and nonpain developers stood with a lumbar lordosis angle that was more extended than their NZ boundary. Pain developers stood slightly more extended (in comparison to nonpain developers) and had a lower moment corresponding to the location of their extension NZ boundary. Overall, in comparison to nonpain developers, pain developers displayed a lower moment corresponding to the location of their extension NZ boundary which could correspond to greater laxity in the lumbar spine. This study estimated the contribution of the midfoot joint complex (MJC) kinematics to the pelvis anterior–posterior positions during the stance phase of walking and investigated whether the MJC is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints to maintain similar pelvic positions across steps. Hip, knee, ankle, and MJC sagittal angles were measured in 11 nondisabled participants during walking. The joints' contributions to pelvic positions were computed through equations derived from a link-segment model. Functional coordination across steps was identified when the MJC contribution to pelvic position varied and the summed contributions of other joints varied in the opposite direction (strong negative covariations [r ≤ −.7] in stance phase instants). We observed that the MJC plantarflexion (arch raising) during the midstance and late stance leads the pelvis backward, avoiding excessive forward displacement. The MJC was the second joint that contributed most to the pelvis positions (around 18% of all joints' contributions), after the ankle joint. The MJC and ankle were the joints that were most frequently coordinated with the other joints (≅70% of the stance phase duration). The findings suggest that the MJC is part of the kinematic chain that determines pelvis positions during walking and is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Decreased trunk neuromuscular control is a risk factor for both upper- and lower-extremity injuries, yet there are few reliable and valid clinical tests to identify deficits. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and known-groups validity of a novel clinical test, the seated trunk control test (STCT). Design: Cross-sectional reliability and known-groups validity study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 89 unique participants: 34 were 3 months postoperative anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and 55 healthy controls. Methods: For the STCT, participants sat on a balance board with their eyes closed for three 30-second trials while investigators counted balance errors. Intraclass correlations (ICCs) were used to assess interrater reliability (N = 20) and test–retest reliability (N = 40). To assess known-groups validity, independent t tests were used to compare STCT errors at 3 months post-ACLR with healthy matched controls (N = 34/group). Area under a receiver operating characteristic curve identified an optimal cutoff for distinguishing between groups. Results: The STCT had perfect interrater reliability (ICC2,3 = 1.00) and good test–retest reliability (ICC3,3 =.79; 95% confidence interval =.61–.89). The ACLR group made significantly more errors on the STCT (mean [SD] = 15.5 [5.4]) than controls (mean [SD] = 8.2 [4.1]; P <.001, Cohen d = 1.52). The STCT's ability to distinguish between groups was excellent (area under a ROC curve = 0.86). A cutoff of 12 errors maximized sensitivity (76%) and specificity (85%). Conclusions: The STCT is reliable between raters and across days. It also has excellent ability to distinguish between individuals with a recent ACLR and healthy matched controls, which provides initial evidence to suggest that the STCT may be clinically useful for identifying deficits in trunk neuromuscular control. Adaptations to resistance training and subsequent performance can be undermined by inadequate interset recovery. Methods typically used to monitor recovery were developed for longitudinal use, making them time-inefficient within singular exercise bouts. If valid, perceptual recovery status (PRS) may be used as an efficient and inexpensive assessment tool to monitor individual recovery. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the validity of PRS on monitoring recovery during a high-intensity back-squat session. Methods: Ten healthy men participated in the 2-session study (separated by at least 48 h). Session 1 included anthropometrics, PRS familiarization, and a 1-repetition-maximum back squat. Session 2 included a high-intensity protocol (5 sets of 5 repetitions; 5-min interset recovery; 85% of 1-repetition maximum). PRS was obtained before the first set and during the last 30 seconds of each 5-minute recovery; rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was also collected. A linear position transducer collected mean barbell velocity (MBV). Repeated-measures correlations assessed the common intraindividual relationships of PRS scores to intraset MBV and RPE, respectively. Results: A very large, positive correlation appeared between PRS and MBV (r [95% CI] =.778 [.613 to.878]; P <.0001). A large, negative correlation emerged between PRS and RPE (r [95% CI] = −.549 [−.737 to −.282]; P <.001). Conclusions: Results indicate that PRS can be a means for practitioners to monitor individualized recovery. PRS tracked well with RPE, strengthening its utility in a practitioner-based setting. Findings provide insight into the practicality of PRS for recovery monitoring. Driving posture can lead to musculoskeletal pain. Most work focuses on the lower back; therefore, we know little about automobile seat design and neck posture. This study evaluated an automobile driver seat that individualized upper back support to improve head and neck posture. Specifically, we examined the system's impact on anterior head translation with secondary outcomes of spine posture and perceptions of comfort/well-being compared with a control. Forty participants were block randomized to experience either the activated or deactivated version of the same seating system first. Participants completed two 30-minute simulated driving trials, separated by washout, with continuous measures of anterior head translation, spine posture, and pelvis orientation. Perceptions of comfort/well-being were assessed by survey and open-ended questions immediately following each condition. Small, but statistically significant decreases in anterior head translation and posterior pelvic tilt occurred with the activated seat system. Participants reported lower satisfaction with the activated seat system. Order of the 2 seat conditions affected differences in pelvis orientation and participant perceptions of comfort/well-being. An anthropometric-based seat system targeting upper back support can significantly affect head and pelvic posture but not satisfaction during simulated driving. Previous work assessing the effect of additive noise on the postural control system has found a positive effect of additive white noise on postural dynamics. This study covers two separate experiments that were run sequentially to better understand how the structure of the additive noise signal affects postural dynamics, while also furthering our knowledge of how the intensity of auditory stimulation of noise may elicit this phenomenon. Across the two experiments, we introduced three auditory noise stimulations of varying structure (white, pink, and brown noise). Experiment 1 presented the stimuli at 35 dB while Experiment 2 was presented at 75 dB. Our findings demonstrate a decrease in variability of the postural control system regardless of the structure of the noise signal presented, but only for high intensity auditory stimulation.

Postural instability is a detrimental and often treatment-refractory symptom of Parkinsons disease. While many existing studies quantify the biomechanical deficits among various postural domains (static, anticipatory, and reactive) in this population, less is known regarding the neural network dysfunctions underlying these phenomena. This review will summarize current studies on the cortical and subcortical neural activities during postural responses in healthy subjects and those with Parkinsons disease. We will also review the effects of current therapies, including neuromodulation and feedback-based wearable devices, on postural instability symptoms. With recent advances in implantable devices that allow chronic, ambulatory neural data collection from patients with Parkinsons disease, combined with sensors that can quantify biomechanical measurements of postural responses, future work using these devices will enable better understanding of the neural mechanisms of postural control. Bridging this knowledge gap will be the critical first step towards developing novel neuromodulatory interventions to enhance the treatment of postural instability in Parkinsons disease.

Foot stance and club type's relationship with lead knee joint biomechanics and possible involvement with injury incidences in amateur golfers have not been evaluated. This study included 16 male right-handed amateur golfers who performed golf swings with 2 different foot stances (straight and open) using 4 different club types (driver, 3 iron, 6 iron, and 9 iron) while standing on 2 force plates in a motion capture laboratory. A custom program calculated the kinematics and kinetics of the lead knee. Overall, the open stance reduced most translations, rotations, forces, and torques of the lead knee in all 4 club types when compared with the straight stance. The open stance reduced the rotation motion (−28%), compressive force (−5%), and rotation torque (−9%) when compared with the straight stance, which are the highest contributors to grinding of cartilage. The driver club had significantly larger values in most translations, rotations, forces, and torques when compared among the 4 club types. The open stance reduced the rotation motion, compressive force, and rotation torque in the lead knee joint compared with the straight stance. Introduction: Proprioception is significantly affected by dysfunction of the basal ganglia, which play an important role in sensorimotor integration. Parkinson's disease (PD), which is characterized by progressive loss of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra, leads to a variety of motor and nonmotor symptoms throughout the course of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine trunk position sense and to investigate its relationship with spinal posture and spinal mobility in patients with PD. Methods: The study included 35 patients with PD and 35 age-matched control subjects. Trunk position sense was determined with "trunk reposition errors." A spinal mouse was used to assess spinal posture and spinal mobility. Results: According to the Hoehn–Yahr rating scale, the majority of the patients were in Stage 1 (68.6%). Trunk position sense was found to be significantly decreased in patients with PD compared with the control group (p <.001) but was not correlated with spinal posture and spinal mobility in patients with PD (p >.05). Conclusions: This study revealed that trunk position sense was impaired in PD from the early stages of the disease. However, neither spinal posture nor spinal mobility was associated with decreased trunk proprioception. Further research into these relationships in the late stages of PD is needed. Summary: This work proposes a smooth time‐varying controller for trajectory tracking and posture regulation problems of car‐like mobile robots (CLMR). Currently, few studies focus on the control problems of CLMR's kinematic model. Global trajectory tracking or global posture stabilization controller for CLMR has not yet been proposed. In this study, we propose a global trajectory tracking controller for CLMR for the first time. By setting a specific reference trajectory, the controller is generalized to the posture stabilization task. Obstacle avoidance is also taken into consideration in posture stabilization task. Unlike the prototypical method of transforming the model into a nonholonomic chained‐form system, the proposed method is designed based on the original tracking error equation. Therefore our approach does not have singularities and has a global attraction region. Furthermore, the global convergence of the proposed controllers is strictly proved using the proof by contradiction and Barbalat's lemma. Although several factors, such as sex and body schema, contribute to gait function, factors for gait dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been elucidated. Postural verticality, a higher-order neural mechanism of gait, is involved in generation of a gait program in healthy individuals; however, its role in patients with PD is unclear. Although subjective postural vertical (SPV), which denotes cognitive information about posture with verticality as the reference axis, is anteriorly and laterally shifted in patients with PD, the presence of sex-related differences in SPV and effect of SPV on gait function remain unclear. Since SPV affects the degree of flexion and lateral bending posture and long-term prognosis of PD, factors affecting SPV in patients with PD should be clarified to improve gait function. Is vertical perception of posture (i.e., SPV) related to gait function in patients with PD? Are there any sex-related differences? The gait and SPV were evaluated in 59 adult outpatients with PD (31 men and 28 women) using five gait (step length, walking speed, coefficient of variation of step time [step CV], cadence, and mean gait acceleration [acceleration]) and two SPV (SPV in the sagittal and coronal planes) assessments and compared between the sexes. No sex-related differences were observed in the SPV in patients with PD. The SPV and gait assessments demonstrated no association in men. Walking speed and SPV in the sagittal plane (p = 0.029), and step CV and SPV in the coronal (p = 0.018) and sagittal planes (p = 0.032) were correlated in women. The functional role of intrinsic foot muscles in the control of standing balance is often overlooked in rehabilitation, partly because the interactions with ankle muscles are poorly understood. How does coactivation of Flexor Digitorum Brevis (FDB) and soleus (SOL) vary across standing tasks of increasing difficulty. Postural sway (Centre of Pressure, CoP) and the electromyographic (EMG) activity of FDB, SOL, Medial Gastrocnemius (MG) and Tibialis Anterior (TA) were measured during bipedal standing, tandem stance, one-legged balance, and standing on toes. Coherence of the rectified EMG signals for SOL and FDB in two bandwidths (0–5 and 10–20 Hz) was calculated as a coactivation index. The CoP sway and the EMG activity of all muscles was greater (P<0.05) for the three difficult tasks. Significant coherence between the SOL and FDB EMG activity was found in both frequency regions: 0–5 and 10–20 Hz. The coherence integral increased with the difficulty of the postural task, especially in the 10–20 Hz band. The findings underscore the important role of FDB in the control of standing balance across tasks and its coactivation with SOL. Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) patients may experience balance problems in various environmental conditions other than positional dizziness. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the postural control abilities and the ability to use sensory inputs in BPPV patients in different conditions. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the postural control performance of middle-aged adult BPPV patients in easy and difficult balance tasks, the effect of vestibular stimulation on the maintenance of balance, and the risk of falling, by posturographic evaluation in various conditions. Method: A total of 26 patients diagnosed with posterior canal BPPV and 26 controls were included in the study. Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Vestibular Stimulation Test (VST), and fall risk assessment (FRA) were applied to the participants, respectively. Results: Significant difference was observed in SOT medio-lateral (ML) plane in Conditions 2 and 5 (p < .05). A significant difference was observed in the vestibular score in the SOT ML plane. No significant difference was observed in VST test scores (p > .05). In the FRA test, a significant difference was observed in the energy and gain parameters in the anterio-posterior plane (p < .05). Conclusions: The current study examined postural control abilities of patients with BPPV in extensive external conditions and in both planes, using various sensory perturbations and stimulation. Japan's security policy is changing rapidly, with drastic increases to its defense budget and the acquisition of counterstrike capabilities. While the deteriorating security environment undeniably motivates Japan's defense posture, the speed and extent of these recent changes still present a puzzle. Why was it under Kishida Fumio--a former leader of Kōchikai, the liberal and oft-considered pacifist faction within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)--that Japan achieved its watershed moment on defense? This article explains this change through the exigencies of Kishida's domestic political survival. It was through his leadership of a minority faction within the LDP, his image as a dove, and support for fiscal discipline, that Kishida managed to find the largest common denominator among competing domestic political forces. Had it not been for Kishida, the speed and degree of Japan's recent transformation in security policies would have been unlikely. Objective: To assess intrarater reliability of ultrasound‐determined measurements of skeletal muscle characteristics across different measurement outcomes, imaging techniques, and age groups. Methods: 2D ultrasound images (B‐mode) of the quadriceps were obtained from young (26 ± 4 year, n = 8 M, 8 F) and older (70 ± 7 year, n = 7 M, 5 F) adults on two occasions, separated by 6 ± 3 days. With participants in both standing and supine postures, images were collected from five anatomical sites along the anterior (two sites) and lateral (three sites) compartments of the thigh corresponding to 56%, 39%, and 22% (lateral only) of femur length. Images were analysed for muscle thickness, pennation angle, and echogenicity. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were used to assess reliability. Results: Muscle thickness values were higher (p < 0.05) on images collected in the stand versus supine posture only for muscles of the anterior compartment, independent of age. Echogenicity values were higher (p < 0.05) in the vastus intermedius on images collected in the supine versus stand posture only in older adults. Pennation angle values were not impacted by imaging posture (p > 0.05). ICC values for thickness, echogenicity, and pennation angle were generally higher for analyses conducted on images collected in the supine versus stand posture. Imaging posture generated a greater difference in ICC values in the lateral versus anterior muscles and in older versus younger participants. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that participant posture during imaging impacts the absolute values and intrarater reliability of ultrasound‐determined muscle characteristics in a muscle‐specific fashion, and this effect is greater in older compared to younger individuals. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of posture changes on vascular compliance in intracranial (brain) versus extracranial vascular beds (forearm). Eighteen young adults (nine females) performed a supine-to-seated-to-standing protocol involving 5 min of rest in each position. Continuous blood pressure, middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood velocity, and brachial artery blood velocity were recorded at each posture. Three to five consecutive steady-state cardiac cycles at each posture were analyzed by a four-element lumped parameter modified Windkessel model to calculate vascular compliance. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased from supine to seated (76(9) vs. 81(12) mmHg; P = 0.006) and from supine to standing (76(9) vs. 82(13) mmHg; P = 0.034). Mean blood flow was greater in the MCA relative to the forearm (forearm: 40(5) mL·min−1, MCA: 224(17) mL·min−1; main effect P < 0.001). Conversely, vascular resistance (forearm: 3.25(0.50) mmHg−1·mL·min−1, brain: 0.36(0.04) mmHg−1·mL·min−1; main effect P < 0.001) and compliance (forearm: 0.010(0.001) mL·min−1·mmHg−1, brain: 0.005(0.001) mL·min−1·mmHg−1; main effect P = 0.001) were greater in the forearm compared to the brain. Significant main effects of posture were observed with decreasing values in upright positions for mean blood flow (P = 0.001) in both vascular beds, but not for resistance (P = 0.163) or compliance (P = 0.385). There were no significant interaction effects between vascular bed and posture for mean flow (P = 0.057), resistance (P = 0.258), or compliance (P = 0.329). Instinctive response was produced for protecting drivers from injury when facing incoming collisions. This study investigated the influence of instinctive response on lower extremity and knee airbag parameters. The change of posture, musculoskeletal characteristic and vehicle control parameters resulting from instinctive response were introduced in injury analysis. The key parameters of knee airbag were optimized based on a multi-object optimization algorithm of response surface method and NSGA-II. Results showed that the increased influence of musculoskeletal characteristic happened when the emergency level varied little. Injury in some cases might increase resulting from the early contact between airbag and lower extremity. It decreased in different levels after the optimization of parameters, with maximum 20%. With the increment of emergency level, the best value of ignition time in the air area, mass-velocity ratio in the brake area and all vent hole ratio increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To investigate how a change in body position with light‐intensity physical activity (PA) 'snacks' (LIPAS, alternate sitting and standing, walking or standing continuously) compared with uninterrupted prolonged sitting affects glucose metabolism and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in young adults with overweight and obesity. Materials and Methods: We conducted a four‐arm randomized controlled crossover trial. The following conditions were tested during an 8‐h simulated workday: uninterrupted prolonged sitting (SIT), alternate sitting and standing (SIT‐STAND; 2.5 h total), continuous standing (STAND), and continuous walking (1.0 mph; WALK). The primary outcome was to investigate how a change in body position (alternate sitting and standing, walking or standing continuously) compared with uninterrupted sitting affects mean 8‐h glucose metabolism. Secondary outcomes included the effects on 2‐h postprandial glucose concentrations, as well as on 8‐h/24‐h heart rate and HRV parameters, in the respective study arms. Capillary blood samples were drawn from an hyperemised earlobe in the fasted state and once every hour during each trial intervention by puncturing the earlobe with a lancet and collecting 20 μL of blood (Biosen S‐Line Lab+; EKF diagnostics, Barleben, Germany). HRV was assessed for 24 h including the 8‐h intervention phase, and a home phase by means of a Holter electrocardiogram. All participants received the same standardized non‐relativised breakfast and lunch during the four trial visits. Results: Seventeen individuals (eight women, mean age 23.4 ± 3.3 years, body mass index 29.7 ± 3.8 kg/m2, glycated haemoglobin level 34.8 ± 3.1 mmol/mol [5.4 ± 0.3%], body fat 31.8 ± 8.2%) completed all four trial arms. Compared with SIT (89.4 ± 6.8 mg/dL), 8‐h mean glucose was lower in all other conditions (p < 0.05) and this was statistically significant compared with WALK (86.3 ± 5.2 mg/dL; p = 0.034). Two‐hour postprandial glucose after breakfast was approximately 7% lower for WALK compared with SIT (p = 0.002). Furthermore, significant time × condition effects on HRV parameters favouring light‐intensity walking were observed (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Replacement and interruption of prolonged sitting with light‐intensity walking showed a significant blood glucose‐lowering effect and improved HRV during an 8‐h work environment in young adults with overweight and obesity. This article scrutinizes how speakers in multi-party conversations on visual art use the Swedish connective för att 'because' in conjunction with their embodied behavior to elaborate on their prior contributions that have not received sufficient uptake by their recipients. The present multimodal interactional analysis demonstrates that the general interactional motivations for the use of turn-expanding practices with för att are to manage not fully affiliating responses or a complete lack of uptake. The connective för att operates discursively and marks the upcoming talk as an explanation of some sort. The för att -prefaced contribution serves as a justification and a warrant for a first action, as well as elaborating on or merely reformulating it. The speakers also signal with embodied cues that they are prepared to elaborate on their first contribution. After having deployed depicting or pointing gestures during their first contribution, the speakers do not retract to a full embodied rest position, but halt in an intermediate body position alongside or directly after the syntactic completion of the first contribution. Background: The offender-victim spatial relationship is crucial in reconstructing a crime scene. The study aims to evaluate the spatial relationship of performing slashing attacks on a dummy using a Chinese kitchen knife, and thus to establish a scientific basis for crime scene reconstruction. Methods: Twenty-four participants (12 males and 12 females) slashed a dummy's neck or chest using a kitchen knife, and the kinematic data were obtained using a three-dimensional motion capture system. The spatial relationships among offender, knife, and victim during slashing attacks were analyzed. Results: Slashing distance and occupancy area are significantly influenced by gender (all P < 0.05), with males having higher values than females. Body parts significantly influence bevel angle, offender and victim azimuth angles, slashing distance, relative slashing distance, and occupancy area (all P < 0.01), with slashing the chest resulting in larger values than slashing the neck. Conclusion: Gender and body position significantly influence the spatial relationships of slashing action. Our data indicate that males stand farther away and occupy a larger area during slashing attacks. When the chest is slashed, the wound orientation is more diagonal, the offender's standing position and slashing distance are farther, and the occupancy area is larger compared to the neck. This study aimed to examine physical therapists' perspectives in conservative treatments of pediatric patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). A cross-sectional survey design was used. A validated questionnaire was distributed to physical therapists, and the responses were analyzed. Preferred treatment frequency was 60 minutes (53.8%), twice weekly (41.5%), over 3 to 5 months (44.6%). Top 3 clinical interventions were core and trunk stability enhancement (90.8%), abdominal strengthening (83.1%), and postural correction (80.0%). Top 3 therapeutic goal-setting parameters were activity-based (78.5%), quality-of-life measure-based (56.9%), and participation-based (50.8%). The most common quality-of-life survey used was Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire (15.6%) followed by Scoliosis Research Society-22 instrument (12.5%). According to our data, physical therapists believe that pediatric patients with AIS can benefit with addressing core and trunk stability, a 60-minute per session, twice weekly, over 3 to 5 months based on activity-based goal-setting and quality-of-life measures using Oswestry questionnaire. Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is an adverse effect of frequently used chemotherapy agents in cancer treatment. It is a painful and dose-limiting condition of the peripheral nerves. Exercise is known to limit the progression of CIPN and reduce sensory and motor symptoms. CIPN can be disabling as it leads to loss of balance control, gait disturbances and frequent falls. The study aims to review the effectiveness of different exercise interventions in improving gait speed and postural control in individuals who underwent chemotherapy. Method: Randomized controlled trials assessing the effect of exercise on postural control and gait are selected. A search strategy was performed in PubMed, PEDro, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Data were extracted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Result: A total of 1450 search results were found, and 4 studies were selected. Exercises like endurance training, balance exercises and sensorimotor training are beneficial in CIPN for reducing postural sway and increasing gait speed. Twice weekly sessions for 30 min each for 4–18 weeks are common exercise regime given to the participants. A combination of more than one type of exercise was shown to be effective in reducing CIPN symptoms. Conclusion: Exercise is beneficial in improving the postural control and gait parameters in individuals with CIPN. To compare the changes in outcomes of balance and postural control after balance training exercise and gaze stability exercise in the elderly population with fall risk. After the screening process, 44 subjects were randomized into three groups: Experimental Group A (Balance training exercises, BTE); Experimental Group B (Gaze stability exercises, GSE), and Control Group C (Fall prevention education only). The outcome measures were center of pressure (COP) range, COP sway, reaction time, proprioception, static balance, Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance (CTSIB), and Short Falls Efficacy Scale (SFES). The pre and post-data were recorded at baseline and after 8 weeks. The normality of the distribution was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Demographic data and baseline measures were compared using one-way ANOVA considering group as between factor and mixed model ANOVA was used to find out the group effect and time effect and time × group interaction effect. Statistical significance was indicated if p ≤ 0.05. GSE had significant changes only in CTSIB 4 whereas BTE had significant changes in CTSIB 4, 5, and 6. COP range showed a significant time effect in the front direction (p = 0.02). For proprioception, there was a significant time effect in the left (p = 0.018) and right direction (p = 0.005), whereas changes in front and back directions were found to be insignificant. SFES showed a significant time effect (p < 0.001), group effect (p = 0.21), and time × group interaction effect (p < 0.001). Development of a technique for measuring the mechanical properties of zygomaticus major (ZM) may aid advances in clinical treatments for correcting abnormal oral posture. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the feasibility of measuring the stiffness of ZM using an MR elastography technique that incorporates a custom local driver and a phase-gradient (PG) inversion. 2D MRE investigations were performed for 3 healthy subjects using a vibration frequency of 90 Hz to test the prediction that the stiffness of ZM would be greater in the mouth-open compared to the mouth-closed position. MRE wave images were acquired along the long axis of ZM and processed using a 2D spatial-temporal directional filter applied in the direction of wave propagation along the long axis of the muscle. Stiffness measurements were obtained by applying the PG technique to a 1D-profile drawn in the phase image of the first harmonic of the wave images and a one-tailed paired t -test was used to compare the ZM stiffness between the two mouth postures (p < 0.05). The mean stiffness and standard deviation (SD) of ZM across the three participants in the mouth-closed and mouth-open postures was 6.75 kPa (SD 3.36 kPa) and 15.5 kPa (SD 5.15 kPa), respectively. Changes of ZM stiffness were significantly greater in the mouth-open than the mouth-closed posture (p = 0.038). The feasibility of using the PG MRE technique to measure stiffness changes in a small muscle such as ZM for different mouth postures has been demonstrated. BACKGROUND: People with forward head posture (FHP) and rounded shoulder posture (RSP) may experience shifts in scapular position and alterations in the strength of the muscles surrounding the scapula. Therefore, a reliable scapula position and scapula muscle strength test are required to identified scapula problem and provided appropriate intervention programs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the reliability of scapular position measurements obtained using a modified digital inclinometer and palpation meter, as well as muscle strength using a hand-held dynamometer (HHD) in individuals with FHP and RSP. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects underwent scapular position tests (upward rotation, anterior tilt, depression, and protraction) and strength tests of periscapular muscles (serratus anterior, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, and lower trapezius) on both the dominant and non-dominant sides. The reliability of the measurements was confirmed by computing the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal clinically important difference (MCID). Test and re-tests were conducted over a period of one week and actual values for each measurement were also obtained and assessed. RESULTS: The ICC ranged from 0.802 to 0.935 for the scapular position tests and from 0.808 to 0.949 for muscle strength tests on the dominant and non-dominant sides. For scapular position tests, SEM values ranged from 0.3 cm to 0.6 cm (protraction and depression), from 1.0∘ to 1.7∘ (upward rotation and anterior tilt) and MCID values ranged from 0.7 cm to 1.6 cm (protraction and depression), from 2.8∘ to 4.7∘ (upward rotation and anterior tilt). Regarding muscle strength tests, SEM and MCID values were in the range 14.4N–27.3N and 39.9N–75.7N, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Scapular position and periscapular muscle strength can be reproducibly measured in healthy subjects individuals with FHP and RSP. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound guided attenuation parameter (UGAP) for evaluating liver fat content with different probe forces and body positions, in relation to sex, and compared with proton density fat fraction (PDFF). Methods: We prospectively enrolled a metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) cohort that underwent UGAP and PDFF in the autumn of 2022. Mean UGAP values were obtained in supine and 30° left decubitus body position with normal 4 N and increased 30 N probe force. The diagnostic performance was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: Among 60 individuals (mean age 52.9 years, SD 12.9; 30 men), we found the best diagnostic performance with increased probe force in 30° left decubitus position (AUC 0.90; 95% CI 0.82–0.98) with a cut-off of 0.58 dB/cm/MHz. For men, the best performance was in supine (AUC 0.91; 95% CI 0.81–1.00) with a cut-off of 0.60 dB/cm/MHz, and for women, 30° left decubitus position (AUC 0.93; 95% CI 0.83–1.00), with a cut-off 0.56 dB/cm/MHz, and increased 30 N probe force for both genders. No difference was in the mean UGAP value when altering body position. UGAP showed good to excellent intra-reproducibility (Intra-class correlation 0.872; 95% CI 0.794–0.921). Conclusion: UGAP provides excellent diagnostic performance to detect liver fat content in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver diseases, with good to excellent intra-reproducibility. Regardless of sex, the highest diagnostic accuracy is achieved with increased probe force with men in supine and women in 30° left decubitus position, yielding different cut-offs. Clinical relevance statement: The ultrasound method ultrasound-guided attenuation parameter shows excellent diagnostic accuracy and performs with good to excellent reproducibility. Lower back disorders (LBDs) affect a large proportion of the population, and treatment for LBDs have been shifting toward individualized, patient-centered approaches. LBDs are typically associated with poor proprioception. Therefore, there has been a recent uptake in the utilization of wearable sensors that can administer biofeedback in various industrial, clinical, and performance-based settings to improve lumbar proprioception. The aim of this study was to investigate whether wearable sensor-derived acute auditory biofeedback can be used to improve measures of gross lumbar proprioception. To assess this, healthy participants completed an active target repositioning protocol, followed by a training period where lumbar-spine posture referenced auditory feedback was provided for select targets. Target re-matching abilities were captured before and after acute auditory biofeedback training to extract measures related to accuracy and precision across spine flexion targets (i.e., 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% maximum). Results suggest a heterogenous response to proprioceptive training whereby certain individuals and spine flexion targets experienced positive effects (i.e., improved accuracy and precision). Specifically, results suggest that mid-range flexion targets (i.e., 40-60% maximum flexion) benefited most from the acute auditory feedback training. The aim of the current study was to examine facial and body posture emotion recognition among deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) and hearing young adults. Participants were (N = 126) DHH (n = 48) and hearing (n = 78) college students who completed two emotion recognition tasks in which they were shown photographs of faces and body postures displaying different emotions of both high and low intensities and had to infer the emotion being displayed. Compared to hearing participants, DHH participants performed worse on the body postures emotion task for both high and low intensities. They also performed more poorly on the facial emotion task, but only for low-intensity emotional facial expressions. On both tasks, DHH participants whose primary mode of communication was Signed English performed significantly more poorly than those whose primary mode was American Sign Language (ASL) or spoken English. Moreover, DHH participants who communicated using ASL performed similarly to hearing participants. This suggests that difficulties in affect recognition among DHH individuals occur when processing both facial and body postures that are more subtle and reflective of real-life displays of emotion. Importantly, this also suggests that ASL as a primary form of communication in this population may serve as a protective factor against emotion recognition difficulties, which could, in part, be due to the complex nature of this language and its requirement to perceive meaning through facial and postural expressions with a wide visual lens. To evaluate the effect of body position on transesophageal atrial pacing (TEAP) in dogs. Prospective, experimental trial. A total of eight mixed-breed dogs, median body mass 25 kg (range 11–31 kg). TEAP was performed using a 6 Fr (2 mm) pacing catheter introduced transorally and positioned in the lower esophagus in left lateral recumbency. The catheter was withdrawn in 5 mm increments until successful TEAP. The minimum pacing threshold (MPT) was determined at each 5 mm increment until atrial capture could not be achieved at a maximal pulse amplitude of 40 mA. The zone of capture (ZOC) was the total distance over which TEAP was achieved. The same process was repeated in right lateral, ventral and dorsal recumbency. A linear mixed model was used to assess the impact of body position on TEAP and ZOC. TEAP was achieved in all body positions. There was significant random effect of individual dogs on ZOC (p = 0.048) but not on MPT (p = 0.109). MPT was 11.56 ± 8.65 mA (mean ± SD), 8.43 ± 2.29 mA, 10.63 ± 6.91 mA and 10 ± 7.44 mA for dorsal, left and right lateral, and ventral recumbency, respectively. ZOC was 5.12 ± 2.08 cm, 6.35 ± 2.41 cm, 5.94 ± 3.23 cm and 5.31 ± 2.2 cm for dorsal, left lateral and right lateral, and ventral recumbency, respectively. Neither ZOC (p = 0.363) nor MPT (p = 0.716) varied significantly between body positions. TEAP can be performed successfully in all body positions in dogs. Body position did not significantly influence MPT or ZOC values for TEAP. Further studies are needed to compare the efficacy of TEAP with the efficacy of standard pharmacological therapy for management of bradycardia during general anesthesia in dogs. Background: The distribution and elimination of infused crystalloid fluid is known to be affected by general anesthesia, but it is unclear whether changes differ depending on whether the patient is operated in the flat recumbent position, the Trendelenburg ("legs up") position, or the reverse Trendelenburg ("head up") position. Methods: Retrospective data on hemodilution and urine output obtained during and after infusion of 1–2 L of Ringer's solution over 30–60 min were collected from 61 patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia and 106 volunteers matched with respect to the infusion volume and infusion time. Parameters describing fluid distribution in the anesthetized and awake subjects were compared by population volume kinetic analysis. Results: General anesthesia decreased the rate constant for urine output by 79% (flat recumbent), 91% (legs up) and 91% (head up), suggesting that laparoscopic surgery per se intensified the already strong anesthesia‐induced fluid retention. General anesthesia also decreased the rate constant governing the return of the distributed fluid to the plasma by 32%, 15%, and 70%, respectively. These results agree with laboratory data showing a depressive effect of anesthetic drugs on lymphatic pumping, and further suggest that the "legs up" position facilitates lymphatic flow, whereas the "head up" position slows this flow. Both Trendelenburg positions increased swelling of the "third fluid space". Conclusions: General anesthesia caused retention of infused fluid with preferential distribution to the extravascular space. Background and Purpose The characteristics of Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy (PHT) include deep, localized pain in the region of the ischial tuberosity. Chronic lesions are often found in long-distance runners. Compression of the tendon and shear force at its insertion at the ischial tuberosity during hip flexion/adduction is a key etiologic factor. The aim of this case report is to analyze the effectiveness of an exercise protocol with progression of tendon loading in PHT in an amateur runner, by assessing pain and functional capacity. Case Description The subject was a 30-year-old male runner. After participating in a 10km race, he experienced an insidious onset of deep buttock pain in the right ischial tuberosity. His pain was aggravated by running on sloped roads and prolonged sitting on hard surfaces, particularly while driving. The visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, the Puranen-Orave test (PO), the Bent-Knee stretch test (BK stretch), the supine plank test, the Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment-proximal hamstring tendons (VISA-H) questionnaire, and the sciatic nerve mobility (via the Slump test) were assessed. The intervention involved a 12-week progressive loading exercise program divided into four phases. Outcomes The initial pain was reduced at 6 weeks of intervention and further decreased at 12 weeks (VAS from 7, to 5 and to 1). Function increased at 6 weeks and at 12 weeks (VISA-H from 23, to 53, to 80). Sciatic nerve mobility was normal. Conclusion The progression of training in a subject with PHT tendon injury based on isometric exercise, concentric/eccentric, energy storage, progressively increasing hip flexion was beneficial, increasing function and decreasing pain. Recently, the interest in the Helmet interface during non-invasive respiratory support (NIRS) has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During NIRS, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) can be given as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which maintains a positive airway pressure throughout the whole respiratory cycle with Helmet as an interface (H-CPAP). The main disadvantage of the H-CPAP is the inability to measure tidal volume (VT). Opto-electronic plethysmography (OEP) is a non-invasive technique that is not sensitive to gas compression/expansion inside the helmet. OEP acquisitions were performed on 28 healthy volunteers (14 females and 14 males) at baseline and during Helmet CPAP. The effect of posture (semi-recumbent vs. prone), flow (50 vs. 60 L/min), and PEEP (0 vs. 5 vs. 10 cmH2O) on the ventilatory and thoracic-abdominal pattern and the operational volumes were investigated. Prone position limited vital capacity, abdominal expansion and chest wall recruitment. A constant flow of 60 L/min reduced the need for the subject to ventilate while having a slight recruitment effect (100 mL) in the semi-recumbent position. A progressive increasing recruitment was found with higher PEEP but limited by the prone position. It is possible to accurately measure tidal volume during H-CPAP to deliver non-invasive ventilatory support using opto-electronic plethysmography during different clinical settings. More than half of the population in impoverished areas around the world, which lack sufficient energy and water, do not have washing machines. Due to a lack of resources and economic reasons, the mechanical task of modern washing machines requiring electrical energy can only be done through hand washing. Additionally, water fetching and laundry work are predominately assigned to women due to socio‐cultural dynamics in disadvantaged areas. The repetitive motions involved in washing over extended periods of time, coupled with awkward body positions, often lead to musculoskeletal disorders in women. This study aims to improve women's work safety and living conditions through a product design for laundry washing. First, the ergonomic risk associated with women's body postures while washing clothes on the floor was evaluated to better understand the impact of the intervention and rapid upper extremity assessment (RULA) method was used for this purpose. Subsequently, the design process for a manual washing product, which operates without electricity, can handle bulk laundry and facilitates easier and more ergonomic work instead of directly scrubbing clothes, was initiated as a remedial intervention. Recognizing that laundry work is a multidimensional experience in women's lives beyond its ergonomic aspects, a holistic design methodology was adopted, incorporating various design approaches to create concepts that better integrate with the lives of woman users. Insights gained from these design approaches were then combined with the conceptual design method to generate design proposals. Muscle activity of the anterior and posterior elements of the cervical spine, both together actively contribute to the balance of the head position over the neck. Increasing muscular tension of the one cervical muscle group could induce poor motor control of cervical spine joints, this might contribute to the anterior position of the head with neck, known as forward head posture (FHP). We propose posterior neck weighting as an innovative orthosis to correct head posture within FHP participants and improve co-related mechanical neck pain. Sixty-one participants with FHP; were randomly assigned to one of two groups posterior cervical weighing orthosis (PCWO) or deep cervical flexion (DCF) exercise. Each participant has been assessed for change in Craniovertebral Angle (CVA) as an indicator for FHP severity, and neck disability index (NDI). Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a statistically significant change difference regarding the degree of CVA improvements, and the score of NDI of pre-and post-intervention of the PCWO group (p < 0.0001), (p < 0.0001), and of the DCF group (p < 0.0001), (p = 0.0039), respectively. Mann–Whitney Test, showed a statistically significant difference between groups for CVA improvement (p < 0.0001), and NDI (p = 0.045). No correlation between CVA and NDI scores within the PCWO group (r = 0.129, p = 0.473), and within the DCF exercise group (r = 0.073, p = 0.71). The quantitative relationship between kicking motion and ball behaviour can be easily explained by detecting the impact point and foot posture. In previous studies, the impact point of a kicking foot was difficult to capture using visual tracking. Thus, a virtual surface modelling technique was applied in this study to clarify the differences in the three-dimensional foot speed, impact point and foot posture between straight, curve, and knuckle kicks in soccer, as well as the relationship between the kick motion and ball rotation. An optical three-dimensional motion capture system (VICON) was used to record the kicking motion. The impact points of the straight, curve, and knuckle kicks were found to be centrally located in the instep area, at a lower (more downwards) inside area, and at the medial area between the instep and inside areas of the kicking foot, respectively. Moreover, an impact with a greater 'swing vector deviation angle (relative to the direction from the impact point to the centre of gravity of the ball)' is necessary for ball rotation. The objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of Q6 and PIPER 6-year-old models in predicting the kinematic responses of child models, and further to quantify and analyze the child injuries during a frontal crash with and without AEB. The finite element model of a booster seat has been validated through a full vehicle test. Based on the validated finite element model, two sled test finite element models for the rear seat booster seat with Q6 and PIPER 6-year-old models were constructed. AEB condition was imposed on above the two models and the kinematic responses of sitting posture including head, neck and chest have been compared in detail. The peak head displacement and neck curvature of Q6 dummy and PIPER 6-year-old models have been compared with the test data from child volunteers. Based on the child model with better predictive capability for kinematic response under AEB, child injuries were evaluated and analyzed for the 50 km/h frontal crash test with and without AEB. Last, this study discussed the effects of internal neck and chest structure difference between Q6 and PIPER 6-year-old models on child kinematic response and the injury risks. Under AEB condition, PIPER 6-year-old model has higher head displacement and lower trunk displacement than Q6 dummy model, and the peak head displacement and neck curvature of PIPER 6-year-old model are similar to the test data of child volunteers. During the 50 km/h frontal crash simulation with pre-crash AEB, the HIC15, Head acceleration 3 ms, Nij decrease 43.7%, 19.6% and 28.8%, respectively and the chest deflection increases 15.5% compared to the simulation without AEB. This study shows that PIPER 6-year-old model is more suitable for the quantification of sitting posture change under AEB due to its higher biofidelity. The pre-crash AEB can substantially reduce the head, neck injuries. But it also increases the chest injury due to the chest pre-compression. Summary Little is known about the physiological and biomechanical factors that determine individual preferences in lying posture during sleep. This study investigated relationships between position preference and position‐specific arousals, awakenings, limb movements and limb movement arousals to explore the mechanisms by which biomechanical factors influence position preference. Forty‐one mature‐aged adults underwent 2 nights of at‐home polysomnography ~2 weeks apart, on a standardised firm foam mattress, measuring nocturnal sleep architecture and position. The lateral supine ratio and restlessness indices specific to lateral and supine positions including limb movement index, limb movement arousal index, arousal index, wake index, respiratory arousal index and apnea–hypopnea index were calculated and analysed via linear mixed‐effects regression. In the supine position, all restlessness indices were significantly increased compared with the lateral position, including a 379% increase in respiratory arousals (β = 7.0, p < 0.001), 108% increase in arousal index (β = 10.3, p < 0.001) and 107% increase in wake index (β = 2.5, p < 0.001). Wake index in the supine position increased significantly with more lateral sleep (β = 1.9, p = 0.0013), and significant correlation between lateral supine ratio polysomnography 1 and lateral supine ratio polysomnography 2 (β = 0.95, p < 0.001) indicated strong consistency in sleep preference. Overall, the findings suggest that some individuals have low tolerance to supine posture, represented by a comparatively high wake index in the supine position, and that these individuals compensate by sleeping a greater proportion in the lateral position. Introduction: Despite significant advancements in understanding the biochemical, anatomical, and functional impacts of vestibular lesions, developing standardized and effective rehabilitation strategies for patients unresponsive to conventional therapies remains a challenge. Chronic vestibular disorders, characterized by permanent or recurrent imbalances and blurred vision or oscillopsia, present significant complexity in non-pharmacological management. The complex interaction between peripheral vestibular damage and its impact on the central nervous system (CNS) raises questions about neuroplasticity and vestibular compensation capacity. Although fundamental research has examined the consequences of lesions on the vestibular system, the effect of a chronic peripheral vestibular error signal (VES) on the CNS remains underexplored. The VES refers to the discrepancy between sensory expectations and perceptions of the vestibular system has been clarified through recent engineering studies. This deeper understanding of VES is crucial not only for vestibular physiology and pathology but also for designing effective measures and methods of vestibular rehabilitation, shedding light on the importance of compensation mechanisms and sensory integration. Methods: This retrospective study, targeting patients with chronic unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy unresponsive to standard treatments, sought to exclude any interference from pre-existing conditions. Participants were evaluated before and after a integrative vestibular exploratory and rehabilitation program through questionnaires, posturographic tests, and videonystagmography. Results: The results indicate significant improvements in postural stability and quality of life, demonstrating positive modulation of the CNS and an improvement of vestibular compensation. Discussion: Successful vestibular rehabilitation likely requires a multifaceted approach that incorporates the latest insights into neuroplasticity and sensory integration, tailored to the specific needs and clinical progression of each patient. Introduction: Short-track speed skating (short track) is an Olympic sport characterized by a specific body position and counterclockwise movement on the track. Based on previous studies, we hypothesized that athlete body positions employed in this sport could lead to asymmetric overuse disorders of the left lower limb muscles. An increased number of latent trigger points (LTrPs) was confirmed in individual muscles of the overloaded left limb of short-track athletes. This study aimed to compare the number of LTrPs and the level of resting muscle tone between elite junior short-track athletes and healthy non-athletes. Methods: The experimental (EXP) group comprised 15 elite short-track junior athletes from the Polish national team and the control (CON) group comprised 15 healthy young volunteers. In both groups, the left leg was tested for (i) the presence of LTrPs and (ii) resting muscle tone (RMT), assessed using surface electromyography in six muscles. Results: The EXP group showed a higher number of LTrPs in the left lower limb, compared with the CON group. The muscle that was most significantly affected in the athletes was the vastus lateralis obliquus [χ² (1, N = 30), p <0.001, V Cramer = 0.71]. This muscle also differed significantly between the groups in terms of the RMT (p = 0.033, Cohen's d = 0.87). Conclusions: Elite short-track junior athletes presented with increased RMT and an increased number of LTrPs in the vastus lateralis oblique muscle, compared with healthy non-athletes. In all vertebrates, maintaining trunk posture primarily depends on descending commands originating from brainstem vestibulospinal nuclei. Despite being broadly outlined across species, the detailed anatomical and operational structure of these vestibulospinal networks remains poorly understood. Xenopus frogs have previously served as an excellent model for exploring such anatomical and functional aspects in relation to the animal’s behavioral requirements. In this study, we examined the reflex motor reactions induced by vestibular stimulation in pre-metamorphic tadpoles. Our findings indicate that natural vestibular stimulation in the horizontal plane yields greater efficacy compared to stimulation in other planes, a phenomenon replicated in a frequencydependent manner through specific galvanic stimulation (GVS) of the horizontal semicircular canals. With the exception of a very rostral cluster of neurons that receive vestibular inputs and project to the spinal cord, the overall anatomical segregation of vestibulospinal nuclei in the brainstem mirrors that observed in juvenile frogs. However, our results suggest closer similarities to mammalian organization than previously acknowledged. Moreover, we demonstrated that vestibulospinal cells project not only to spinal motoneurons in rostral segments but also to more distal segments that undergo regression during metamorphosis. Lastly, we illustrated how vestibular-induced spinal reflexes change during larval development, transitioning from tail swim-based activity to rostral trunk bursting responses, likely anticipating postural control in post-metamorphic frogs. China is developing counterspace capabilities which may threaten US space systems. At the same time, its increasing space dependence encourages restraint in warfare. We argue that these conflicting trends have affected China’s counterspace posture in two main ways. First, China is bolstering space deterrence through offensive weapons, as well as more resilient and redundant space systems. Second, China prioritizes soft-kill counterspace capabilities that can be used earlier in a conflict with lower escalation risks. Background: Arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) is a relevant measurement for individualized prescription of exercise with blood flow restriction (BFRE). Therefore, it is important to consider factors that may influence this measure. Purpose: This study aimed to compare lower limb AOP (LL-AOP) measured with 11 cm (medium) and 18 cm (large) cuffs, in different body positions, and explore the predictors for each of the LL-AOP measurements performed. This information may be useful for future studies that seek to develop approaches to improve the standardization of pressure adopted in BFRE, including proposals for equations to estimate LL-AOP. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Fifty-one healthy volunteers (males, n = 25, females, n = 26; Age: 18-40 years old) underwent measurement of thigh circumference (TC), brachial blood pressure, followed by assessments of LL-AOP with medium and large cuffs in positions supine, sitting and standing positions. Results: The large cuff required less external pressure (mmHg) to elicit arterial occlusion in all three-body positions when compared to the medium cuff (p < 0.001). The LL-AOP was significantly lower in the supine position, regardless of the cuff used (p < 0.001). Systolic blood pressure was the main predictor of LL-AOP in the large cuff, while TC was the main predictor of LL-AOP with the medium cuff. Body position influenced strength of the LL-AOP predictors. Conclusion: Our results indicate that LL-AOP and its predictors are substantially influenced by body position and cuff width. Given the need to provide clear communication to diverse audiences in the United States during public health emergencies, this assessment of images in COVID-19 communication materials identified ways to improve visual communication design. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 74 participants from various racial and ethnic backgrounds to gauge the clarity of images without associated text used in two infographics. Most images were understood by participants, but for each image at least some participants had an interpretation different from intended or only captured a portion of the message. Some images were interpreted by most or all participants as representing something other than intended. Participant recommendations were used to develop seven practical ways to improve image clarity: realistic graphics, exaggerated body position and actions, details to show image context and background, icons to encourage or discourage actions, symbols to show movement, consistency in recommended behavior in each image, and closely matching image to associated text. These elements can be applied in combination with existing health equity guiding principles for creating visual communication products before testing and validating products with intended audiences of different sociodemographic and cultural background to ensure appropriateness and clarity of images. Most people practice a religion, often multiple times daily. Among the most visible aspects of these practices are body postures, which according to embodiment theories, likely shape the psychological experience of religion. In a preregistered study, we test this idea among Christians, Muslims, and Hindus in the United States, Turkey, and India (N = 2,458). In a repeated-measures experimental design, participants imagined praying in various typical postures, then reported their affective experiences, perceived relationship with deity, and prayer content for each posture. Compared to downward and constrictive postures, expansive and upward postures led to more positive emotions, dominance, and praise-focused prayers, yet fewer introspective or intercessory prayers. Interestingly, these effects varied based on religious context (e.g., many Hindus found upward and expansive postures offensive, causing no positive affect). We further explored whether these effects varied based on posture familiarity, religiosity, interoceptive sensibility, and personality traits.
