PurposeTo determine whether a diagnosis of a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes.MethodsMental health symptom screening and diagnostic data from 82 women with single gestation in the Healthy Babies Before Birth study conducted from 2013 to 2018 were obtained by clinic interview. If a woman scored over 10 on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) or endorsed the suicidality item; or scored over 7 on the Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale (OASIS), a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) Axis I Disorders was administered. An adverse perinatal outcome was operationalized as a diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus, intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, chorioamnionitis, hemorrhage, fetal death, preterm birth, or a low birthweight baby, and abstracted from the medical records.ResultsWomen were between 22.0 and 45.0 years old (Mean age = 33.1 ± 4.3). Mean BMI was 24.7 ± 5.6 (Range 16.8 to 47.1). Nineteen percent (16) of the 82 women had a SCID diagnosis of a PMAD. Thirty-seven percent (30) had a diagnosed adverse perinatal outcome. Multiple logistic regression was conducted with these predictors: SCID diagnosis of a PMAD, maternal age, BMI. All predictors were significant with respective odds ratios as follows: OR = 3.58, 95% CI 1.03-12.44, p = .045; OR = 2.30, 95% CI 1.21-4.38, p = .011; OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.06-2.69, p = .027.ConclusionsA PMAD diagnosis was associated with 3.5 times higher odds of having an adverse perinatal outcome. For every 5 years a woman aged or every five units her BMI increased her odds of having an adverse perinatal outcome increased. Older age and increased BMI are well established adverse perinatal outcome risk factors. These results suggest that mental illness risk should also be consistently assessed in obstetric settings.

Postpartum depression (PPD) can interfere with the establishment of affective bonds between infant and mother, which is important for the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development of the child. Rates of PPD have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, likely due to the added stress and limited support available to new parents. The present study examined whether parenting-related stress, perceived bonding impairments, the quality of observed mother-infant interactions, and salivary oxytocin levels differ between depressed and non-depressed mothers, along with differential impacts of COVID-19 on depressed mothers. Participants included 70 mothers (45 depressed, 25 controls) with infants aged 2-6 months. All data were collected remotely to ease participant burden during the pandemic. Depression was associated with experiences of heightened parenting-related stress and bonding difficulties. These differences were not observed during mother-infant interactions or in salivary oxytocin levels. Differences in COVID-19-related experiences were minimal, though depressed mothers rated slightly higher stress associated with returning to work and financial impacts of the pandemic. Findings highlight the importance of early intervention for PPD to mitigate long-term effects on mothers, children, and families. Additionally, they underscore the need for early intervention to support the developing mother-infant dyad relationship during this crucial time.

Our study delves into postpartum depression (PPD) extending observation up to six months postpartum, addressing the gap in long-term follow-ups and uncover critical intervention points. Through a continuous three-wave cohort study involving 3174 of 10,730 invited postpartum women, we utilized machine learning to predict PPD risk, incorporating self-reported surveys and health records from October 2021 to Jan 2023. PPD prevalence slightly decreased from 30.9 % to 29.1 % over six months. The Random Forest model emerged as the most effective, identifying key predictors of PPD at different stages. The top three factors at first month were newborn's birth weight, maternal weight before delivery and before pregnancy. The EPDS scores of last time, newborn's birth weight and maternal weight before pregnancy and before delivery were main predictors for EPDS scores at third and sixth months postpartum. The study faces limitations such as potential selection bias due to the convenience sampling method and the reliance on self-reported measures, which may introduce reporting bias. Furthermore, the high attrition rate could affect the representativeness of the sample and the generalizability of the findings. There is a slight decrease in PPD rates over six months, yet the prevalence remains high. This underscores the need for early and ongoing mental health support for new mothers. The prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) exceeds 20% in China. In this article, we unpack the coping strategies and involuntary responses to PPD among Chinese women and how such patterns are shaped by family communication dynamics and reflect distinct social, structural, and cultural contexts. Drawing upon the communication accommodation theory and the generic stress and coping model, we analyzed 661 posts collected under the hashtag #PPD (chanhou yiyuzheng) on Zhihu using the phronetic iterative approach. The analysis reveals that women self-identifying as having PPD often find themselves situated within a family environment marked by non-adaptive communication, culminating in insufficient support from their social circles. Furthermore, a significant number of these women lack effective coping mechanisms to manage PPD. Instead, they tend to stifle their expressions and needs through automatic responses, dedicating themselves to constant self-monitoring without practicing self-care. Objectives: To assess the feasibility of universal screening of postpartum depression (PPD), using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) in the general population. To investigate the proportion of women identified as being at risk of PPD and with confirmed PPD or other mental disorders after a psychiatric consultation. Methods: A multicenter prospective cohort study in four French maternities conducted between 2020 and 2023. All women aged over 18 years, who delivered following a singleton pregnancy after 37 weeks of gestation were eligible for inclusion. The exclusion criteria were pre‐existing psychiatric disorders such as depressive syndrome. The EPDS was completed at 8 weeks postpartum via an online self‐administered questionnaire. If the response to the questionnaire suggested a mental disorder, a psychiatric consultation was proposed to the women concerned. The endpoints were the proportion of women completing the EPDS, the EPDS score, the proportion of women at risk of PPD, the proportion of psychiatric consultation, and the subsequent diagnosis. Results: The study included 923 women, of whom 55.0% (508/923) completed the EPDS. Among them, 28.1% (143/508) had an EPDS score of 10 or more, and 11.2% (57/508) received a psychiatric consultation. PPD was confirmed in 8.8% (5/57) of women. Other disorders detected were mood disorders, disorders specifically associated with stress, and anxiety/fear‐related disorders, in 33.3%, 28.1%, and 14.0% of the women, respectively. Conclusions: Screening with self‐administered EPDS is feasible, with a good response rate, making it possible to suspect mental disorders, including PPD, and to offer psychological support when needed. Aim: To describe the current state of the literature on nurses' and midwives' knowledge, perceptions and experiences of managing parental postnatal depression (PPND). Design: The Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review method and the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews guided the work. Data Sources: A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Scopus databases was conducted in January and February 2023. Review Methods: Peer‐reviewed primary research articles published in English between 2012 and 2023 that involved nurses or midwives managing PPND were included. Rayyan was used to screen titles, abstracts and full‐text articles. A spreadsheet was used to organize extracted data and synthesize results. Results: Twenty‐nine articles met the inclusion criteria. Most study samples were of mothers, and few were from middle‐ and lower‐income countries. Nurses and midwives lacked knowledge about PPND, yet they felt responsible for its management. Nurses and midwives faced significant organizational and systems‐level challenges in managing PPND. However, nurses and midwives facilitated PPND care in collaboration with other healthcare providers. Conclusion: The review highlights significant gaps in the nurses' and midwives' care of PPND. Educational programmes are necessary to increase nurse and midwife knowledge of PPND and strategies for its management, including facilitating collaboration across the healthcare system and eliminating organizational and systemic‐related barriers. Additional focused research is needed on nurses' and midwives' knowledge, perception of and experience with PPND beyond mothers, such as with fathers, sexually and gender‐minoritized parents and surrogate mothers. Finally, additional research is needed in middle‐ and lower‐income countries where nurses and midwives may face a higher burden of and unique cultural considerations in managing PPND. If left untreated, PPND can lead to long‐term consequences, including child developmental delays, behavioural problems and difficulties with parental–child attachment. The special issue highlights the interdisciplinary nature of perinatal psychiatry, which involves various specialties such as obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, epidemiology, and neuroscience. Background: Perinatal depression (PND) is a debilitating condition affecting maternal well‐being and child development. Allopregnanolone (ALLO) is important to perinatal neuroplasticity, however its relationship with depression severity and postpartum structural brain volume is unknown. Method: We examined perinatal temporal dynamics and bidirectional associations between ALLO and depression severity and the association between these variables and postpartum gray matter volume, using a random intercept cross‐lagged panel model. Results: We identified a unidirectional predictive relationship between PND severity and ALLO concentration, suggesting greater depression severity early in the perinatal period may contribute to subsequent changes in ALLO concentration (β = 0.26, p = 0.009), while variations in ALLO levels during the perinatal period influences the development and severity of depressive symptoms later in the postpartum period (β = 0.38, p = 0.007). Antepartum depression severity (Visit 2, β = 0.35, p = 0.004), ALLO concentration (Visit 2, β = 0.37, p = 0.001), and postpartum depression severity (Visit 3, β = 0.39, p = 0.031), each predicted the right anterior cingulate volume. Antepartum ALLO concentration (Visit 2, β = 0.29, p = 0.001) predicted left suborbital sulcus volume. Antepartum depression severity (Visit 1, β = 0.39, p = 0.006 and Visit 2, β = 0.48, p < 0.001) predicted the right straight gyrus volume. Postpartum depression severity (Visit 3, β = 0.36, p = 0.001) predicted left middle‐posterior cingulate volume. Objective/Background: Unmet needs in perinatal mental healthcare are an important public health issue particularly in the context of a stressful life event such as the COVID‐19 pandemic but data on the extent of this problem are needed. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the (1) proportion of women with clinically significant symptoms of perinatal depression, anxiety or comorbid symptoms of depression and anxiety, receiving mental healthcare overall and by country and (2) factors associated with receiving mental healthcare. Method: Women in the perinatal period (pregnancy or up to 6 months postpartum) participating in the Riseup‐PPD‐COVID‐19 cross‐sectional study, reported on sociodemographic, social support health‐related factors, and COVID‐19 related factors, and on symptoms of depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS]) and anxiety (Generalised Anxiety Disorder [GAD‐7]) using self‐report questionnaires. Clinically significant symptoms were defined as EPDS ≥ 13 for depression and GAD‐7 ≥ 10 for anxiety. Mental healthcare was defined as self‐reported current mental health treatment. Results: Of the 11 809 participants from 12 countries included in the analysis, 4 379 (37.1%) reported clinically significant symptoms of depression (n = 1 228; 10.4%; EPDS ≥ 13 and GAD‐7 ⟨ 10), anxiety (n = 848; 7.2%; GAD‐7 ≥ 10 and EPDS ⟨ 13) or comorbid symptoms of depression and anxiety (n = 2 303; 19.5%; EPDS ≥ 13 and GAD‐7 ≥ 10). Most women with clinically significant symptoms of depression, anxiety, or comorbid symptoms of depression and anxiety were not receiving mental healthcare (89.0%). Variation in the proportion of women with clinically significant symptoms of depression and/or anxiety reporting mental healthcare was high (4.7% in Turkey to 21.6% in Brazil). Women in the postpartum (vs. pregnancy) were less likely (OR 0.72; 95% CI 0.59‐0.88), whereas women with previous mental health problems (vs. no previous mental health problems) (OR 5.56; 95% CI 4.41‐7.01), were more likely to receive mental healthcare. Conclusion: There are high unmet needs in mental healthcare for women with clinically significant symptoms of perinatal depression and/or anxiety across countries during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Studies beyond the COVID‐19 pandemic and covering the whole range of mental health problems in the perinatal period are warranted to understand the gaps in perinatal mental healthcare. Background: Our study aims to understand whether depression, either in pregnancy or lifetime, affects cognitive biases (comprising the attentional focus and affective state) and mentalizing features (ability to understand children's internal mental states, thereby detecting and comprehending their behavior and intention), in maternal speech during mother‐infant interaction in the first postnatal year. Methods: We recruited 115 pregnant women (44 healthy, 46 with major depressive disorder [MDD] in pregnancy, and 25 with a history of MDD but healthy pregnancy) at 25 weeks' gestation. Three‐minute videos were recorded at 8 weeks and 12 months postnatally for each dyad. Maternal speech was transcribed verbatim and coded for cognitive biases and mentalizing comments using the Parental Cognitive Attributions and Mentalization Scale (PCAMs). Results: Women suffering from antenatal depression showed a decreased proportion of mentalizing comments compared with healthy women, at both 8 weeks (0.03 ± 0.01 vs. 0.07 ± 0.01, P = 0.002) and 12 months (0.02 ± 0.01 vs. 0.04 ± 0.01, P = 0.043). Moreover, compared with healthy women, both those with antenatal depression and those with a history of depression showed decreased positive affection in speech (0.13 ± 0.01 vs. 0.07 ± 0.01 and 0.08 ± 0.02, respectively P = 0.003 and P = 0.043), and made significantly fewer comments focused on their infants' experience at 8 weeks (0.67 ± 0.03 vs. 0.53 ± 0.04 and 0.49 ± 0.05, respectively P = 0.015 and P = 0.005). In linear regression models women's socioeconomic difficulties and anxiety in pregnancy contribute to these associations, while postnatal depression did not. Conclusions: Both antenatal depression and a lifetime history of depression are associated with a decreased quality of women's speech to their infants, as shown by less focus on their infant's experience, decreased positive affection, and less able to mentalize. Examining maternal speech to their infants in the early postnatal months may be particularly relevant to identify women who could benefit from strategies addressing these aspects of the interactive behavior and thus improve infant outcome in the context of depression. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to one in five mothers and birthing parents, yet just 10% receive evidence‐based care. This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine if a synchronous online 9‐week group cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention delivered by mothers who have recovered from postpartum depression (i.e., peers) could effectively improve PPD and its comorbidities. Methods: Participants (n = 183) in this study lived in Ontario, Canada, were ≥18 years‐old, had an infant <12 months, were fluent in English, and scored ≥10 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). They were randomized to experimental (received intervention plus treatment as usual (TAU)) or waitlist control (TAU plus the intervention after a 9‐week wait) groups. Depression, anxiety, social support, mother‐infant bonding, and infant temperament were assessed at baseline and 9 weeks later. Outcomes were assessed in the experimental group 3 months post‐intervention to assess stability. Results: Statistically significant reductions were observed in EPDS (B = 5.99; p < 0.001; d = 1.32) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire‐7 scores (B = 5.94; p < 0.001; d = 1.22), improvements that remained stable 3 months post‐intervention in the experimental group. Maternal social support (p = 0.02; d = 0.40), infant‐focused anxiety (p = 0.02; d = 0.54), and infant negative emotionality (p < 0.01; d = 0.23) also improved post‐intervention and remained stable 3 months later. Conclusion: Online peer‐delivered group CBT for PPD can effectively treat PPD and anxiety, and improve social support, infant‐focused anxiety, and negative emotionality in infants. Background: Serotonin reuptake inhibitors are commonly used for treatment of mental health problems in pregnancy but may cause neonatal adaptation syndrome. It is unknown whether reduction or discontinuation of medication prior to delivery may mitigate this effect. Methods: We present a case series of 38 women who either tapered their medication prior to delivery or maintained or increased their dose. Results: Greater reductions in maternal antidepressant dose just prior to delivery were associated with fewer admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for infants. There was a slightly greater increase in depressive symptoms across delivery for women who tapered, which was not statistically significant. Conclusions: NICU admissions may be less frequent among neonates whose mothers tapered their medication prior to delivery. Objective: To assess the postpartum depression (PPD) risk in women with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and moderators. Methods: We identified observational studies of PPD rates in women with versus without PPH in Embase/Medline/PsychInfo/Cinhail in 09/2022. Study quality was evaluated using the Newcastle‐Ottawa‐Scale. Our primary outcome was the odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence intervals [95%CI]) of PPD in women with versus without PPH. Meta‐regression analyses included the effects of age, body mass index, marital status, education, history of depression/anxiety, preeclampsia, antenatal anemia and C‐section; subgroup analyses were based on PPH and PPD assessment methods, samples with versus without history of depression/anxiety, from low‐/middle‐ versus high‐income countries. We performed sensitivity analyses after excluding poor‐quality studies, cross‐sectional studies and sequentially each study. Results: One, five and three studies were rated as good‐, fair‐ and poor‐quality respectively. In nine studies (k = 10 cohorts, n = 934,432), women with PPH were at increased PPD risk compared to women without PPH (OR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.13 to 1.44, p < 0.001), with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 98.9%). Higher PPH‐related PPD ORs were estimated in samples with versus without history of depression/anxiety or antidepressant exposure (OR = 1.37, 95%CI = 1.18 to 1.60, k = 6, n = 55,212, versus 1.06, 95%CI = 1.04 to 1.09, k = 3, n = 879,220, p < 0.001) and in cohorts from low‐/middle‐ versus high‐income countries (OR = 1.49, 95%CI = 1.37 to 1.61, k = 4, n = 9197, versus 1.13, 95%CI = 1.04 to 1.23, k = 6, n = 925,235, p < 0.001). After excluding low‐quality studies the PPD OR dropped (1.14, 95%CI = 1.02 to 1.29, k = 6, n = 929,671, p = 0.02). Postpartum depression is a major psychiatric disorder associated with maternal suicide and child developmental disturbances. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether general anesthesia for cesarean delivery is associated with a higher rate of new-onset depression after delivery than neuraxial anesthesia. This is a nationwide retrospective cohort study using data retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database between 2014 and 2018. Women who had cesarean delivery under general or neuraxial anesthesia were enrolled. After 1:4 propensity score matching, there were 4544 and 18,176 women under the general and neuraxial anesthesia groups, respectively. The primary outcome was new-onset depression diagnosed after delivery in a time-to-event analysis setting. After propensity-score matching, the rate of new-onset depression diagnosed within 1 year was 1.10 % (50/4488) and 0.86 % (157/18176) after cesarean delivery under general and neuraxial anesthesia, respectively. For depression diagnosed within 90 days of delivery, significant difference between the two groups was noted (0.51 % vs. 0.30 %, P = 0.031). In the time-to-event analysis with Cox regression model, women who delivered under general anesthesia were associated with significantly higher risk of postpartum depression within 90 days (Hazard ratio [HR], 1.71; 95 % CI, 1.05–2.79) compared with those under neuraxial anesthesia. The observational design only allows asserting association, rather than establishing causality between exposure and outcomes. Women who underwent cesarean delivery under general anesthesia had a higher risk of subsequent depression within 90 days than those under neuraxial anesthesia. Early screening for depressive disorders might facilitate timely management. Postnatal experience is one of the most under-researched areas within medical sociology and anthropology scholarship in India. Using a qualitative lens, this study examines the postnatal experiences of a particular class of working mothers in Bengaluru, one of India's fastest-growing cities. Through in-depth interviews, the study demonstrates that the postnatal experience of working mothers is layered with social and cultural factors. The findings also revealed that after the delivery, the child is prioritised over the mother, who hardly receives any mental support from her spouse, family members or external network ties. Additionally, these working mothers are often criticised for neglecting motherhood responsibilities and instead focusing on their careers. Expanding the scholarship on postnatal experience, this article highlights the mental agonies and issues faced by working mothers in urban India, as well as in privileged classes. Background & Objective: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health issue affecting the well-being of both mother and child. Despite its prevalence, PPD is often overlooked during postpartum care. This study was performed with aim to investigate the prevalence and impact of postpartum depression (PPD) among lactating women in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 146 primiparous lactating women who visited the Maternity Hospital in Erbil for postnatal care services in 2022. Data was collected using a questionnaire containing personalsocial characteristics of the participants, obstetric history, women's health conditions during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and the current postpartum period, along with a concise checklist of PPD symptoms. Results: The majority of participants aged 20-30 years (73.97%) and most were housewives (82.88%). The mean frequency of depressive symptoms increased from 2.58±1.48 times per week before pregnancy to 3.50±1.14 times per week postpartum. The most frequently reported problem was feelings of worthlessness (83.63%). Logistic regression analysis showed significant associations between PPD and several factors including occupation (P=0.020, OR=0.32), female education (P=0.027, OR=0.63), family income (P=0.006, OR=0.53), marriage type (P=0.001, OR=3.29), having a separate bedroom (P=0.009, OR=0.41) and BMI (P=0.001, OR=1.10). Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of recognizing and addressing depressive symptoms during the postpartum period. The healthcare providers should pay more attention to women's mental health during postpartum visits, as these symptoms can indirectly or directly affect family relationships. The results can contribute to the development of effective strategies and interventions to improve mental health support for mothers, thereby enhancing the well-being of mothers and their families. To determine the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum stress (PPS) and identify associated risk factors among mothers of preterm and low birth weight (LBW) infants. We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected from 255 mothers with preterm and LBW infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Korle‐Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana. A standardized interviewer‐administered questionnaire collected data on maternal, pregnancy, birth, and infant characteristics. The questionnaire also included the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) and the Perceived Stress Scale‐4 (PSS‐4) to assess PPD and PPS, respectively. Simple and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with PPD and PPS. The prevalence of moderate to moderately severe PPD was 3.9%, and that of PPS was 43.5%. The multivariable linear regression analysis showed that an increased number of prenatal care visits (β‐estimate = 0.26; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.08–0.43; P < 0.01) was positively associated with higher scores on the PHQ‐9, whereas gestational age at birth (β = −0.21; 95% CI –0.40 to −0.03; P = 0.02) was inversely associated with PHQ‐9 scores. Moreover, a longer gestational period at the first prenatal care visit (β = 0.25; 95% CI 0.05–0.45; P = 0.01) and following the Islamic religion were associated with elevated scores on the PSS‐4 (β = 0.95; 95% CI 0.11−1.80; P = 0.011). Our findings underscore the presence of moderate PPD levels and high PPS levels among mothers. Active screening, diagnosis, and treatment for mothers at risk of mental health disorders during the peripartum period could enhance coping mechanisms for mothers navigating the challenging NICU environment and transitioning to the home environment. Background: Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a severe mental health condition that adversely affects mothers and their infants. The influence of PPD on maternal-infant bonding and breastfeeding practices has been scarcely reported in Nigeria. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of PPD, the associated factors, and the relationship with maternal-infant bonding and breastfeeding practices in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 600 mothers within the extended postpartum period (≤ 1 year) from three government-owned immunisation clinics at primary, secondary, and tertiary health facilities in Abeokuta, Ogun State. PPD was assessed using the Edinburgh postnatal depression Scale (EPDS ≥ 13), and maternal-infant bonding was evaluated using the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ ≥ 50). We also examined breastfeeding practices (i.e. the time to initiation by 30 min, exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and early commencement of complementary feeding by 2 months). Data was analysed using chi-square and logistics regression models at a 5% significance level. Results: The prevalence of PPD was 21.8%, 95% CI (18.7–25.3). Factors associated with PPD were maternal age: 25–34 years [AOR = 0.52; 95% CI (0.29–0.90)]; ≥ 35 years [AOR = 0.44; 95% CI (0.20–0.96)], being married [AOR = 0.43; 95% CI (0.21–0.85)], perceived stress increased the odds of PPD: moderate stress level [AOR = 8.38; 95% CI (3.50–19.9)]; high-stress level [AOR = 47.8; 95% CI (8.65–263.7)] and self-reported history of emotional problems [AOR = 3.25; 95% CI (1.43–7.38)]. There was a significant direct association between PPD and poor maternal-infant bonding [AOR = 3.91; 95% CI (1.04–4.60)]. PPD reduces the odds of early breastfeeding initiation [AOR = 0.43; 95% CI (0.28–0.68)], but no association was found between PPD and exclusive breastfeeding [AOR = 1.07; 95% CI (0.07–1.67)]. Conclusion: The prevalence of PPD was high in our study population and associated with poor maternal-infant bonding and late breastfeeding initiation but not with exclusive breastfeeding. Background Methods Results Conclusions Parents of twins appear to be at increased risk of postpartum depression (PPD), yet little is known about the magnitude and timing of onset in the postpartum period compared to singleton parents.We conducted a cohort study using the Danish nationwide health registers. We defined a study population of parents that is, mothers and fathers of all twin and singleton livebirths between 1997 and 2019. Postpartum depression was defined as incident depression diagnosis or a redeemed antidepressant prescription from childbirth through 365 days postpartum. We performed a parametric time‐to‐event analysis based on Poisson regression. The time scale was time since birth, modeled using restricted cubic splines. From this we estimated the hazard ratio (HR) representing the momentary risk, and the cumulative risk ratio (RR) over the first year postpartum, in twin compared to singleton parents.The study population was based on 27,095 twin and 1,350,046 singleton births. In adjusted analyses, the HR of twins compared to singletons was highest around 2 months postpartum (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.10–1.49) for mothers, and around 6 months (1.20, 95% CI 1.02–1.42) for fathers. The 6 months adjusted cumulative RR of PPD in twins compared to singletons was 1.24 (95% CI 1.10–1.40) for mothers and 1.11 (95% CI 0.95–1.30) for fathers.Twin mothers had increased risk of PPD compared to singleton mothers, which was driven by an immediate increase after childbirth. The risk among twin fathers was not increased immediately after childbirth, but we found slightly elevated risk around 6 months postpartum. This could suggest diverse patterns of PPD symptomatology in twin parents compared to singleton parents and between mothers and fathers. The prevalence of postpartum depression in teenage mothers is higher than that in adult mothers. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression, distress, and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) following childbirth and its resultant risk factors among teenage mothers. Material and Methods. This cross-sectional study was carried out on 167 teenage women aged 11–19 years, 8-week after giving birth, in Tabriz, Iran. The data were collected using by socio-demographic characteristics questionnaire, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist and Postpartum Distress Measure scale. Results. The study results revealed that 12.6% and 7.2% of the participants had postpartum depression and PTSD, respectively. The results showed that the variables of the number of children, dissatisfaction with marriage, and history of preconception depression were among the risk factors associated with postpartum depression. The results indicated that unwanted pregnancy, lack of spousal support, insufficient income, and infant restlessness variables were predictors of PTSD. Conclusion. Based on our findings, it is crucial to identify teenage mothers with predisposing factors for postpartum depression and PTSD. Providing family planning counseling to reduce unwanted pregnancies, training fathers to support their spouses, and ensuring timely referral of high-risk individuals are essential interventions to address the mental health challenges faced by teenage mothers. Background: Antenatal depression is characterized by low mood, insomnia, disorganised behaviour, irritability, and agitation during the pregnancy. If underestimated, antenatal depression is untreated during the pregnancy. It is associated to higher levels of suicide, higher risk of depression after childbirth, preeclampsia, preterm birth, low birth weight, poor interactions between child and mother and severe obstetric outcomes. New data underlined the importance to prevent the risk of depression during the pregnancy. This study examines the predictive validity of potential risk factors, such as socio-demographic and psychological factors, in developing the antenatal depression. Methods: The sample was composed by Italian pregnant women (N = 247, mean age of 33.77, SD = 4.78 years). This sample completed the Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the Teate Depression Inventory (TDI) and questionnaires about demographic variables. To study associations among variables examined bivariate correlations were computed. To analyse the role of socio-demographic factors and the psychological dimension to predict the severity of the antenatal depression a logistic regression was performed. Results: Results showed significantly positive correlations between the EPDS and the TDI, and no associations among the EPDS and all socio-demographic factors. Therefore, only the psychological factors were significant predictive risk factors of antenatal period. Finally, higher score of the depression measured via TDI predicted higher score of the EPDS. Conclusions: Our results had implications in clinical field. Background: Weight stigma is defined as negative misconception and stereotypes associated with weight, and it is commonly experienced during pregnancy. Weight stigma during pregnancy may be sourced from trusted close relationships including family members, partners, and friends. Social support is a necessary psychosocial factor for optimal health and wellbeing throughout pregnancy, and weight stigma sourced from these integral relationships may negatively affect health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of weight stigma from close others on maternal health outcomes. Methods: A survey was administered via Qualtrics to pregnant women (≥ 13 weeks, residence within the United States or Canada, ≥ 18 years old, singleton pregnancy). During pregnancy, participants completed questionnaires identifying whether they had experienced weight stigma from a close relationship (i.e., family, partners, or friends), how often, and relationship quality scales for each source. At three months postpartum, they were surveyed about their pregnancy outcomes including gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, chronic pain, anxiety/depression. They also completed the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), and a linear regression was performed with frequency of weight stigma. Logistic regressions were performed between frequency of weight stigma and health outcomes. If significant, relationship quality was tested as a potential mediator. Significance was accepted as p < 0.05. Results: 463 participants completed both surveys of which 86% had experienced weight stigma from close others. Frequency of weight stigma was significantly associated with chronic pain (β = 0.689, p < 0.001), and anxiety/depression (β = 0.404, p = 0.005). The relationship between frequency of weight stigma in pregnancy and chronic pain was mediated by quality of all relationships. Family relationship quality mediated between frequency of weights stigma and anxiety/depression. Frequency of weight stigma was significantly associated with depression symptom severity measured by the EPDS (β = 0.634, p < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings underscore the issue of weight stigma and show that experiencing this from trusted close others is associated with poor health outcomes like chronic pain. Women with low social support may be at higher risk for PPD. This study examined the association between social support and self‐reported postpartum depression symptoms (PDS) among Illinois postpartum women.Using 2016–2020 data from the Illinois Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) (n = 5886), instrumental support (physical, hands‐on support) and partner emotional support were each categorized as high/low and were combined in a composite measure (high = high on both types, moderate = high on one type, and low = low on both types). PDS were self‐reported. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using logistic regression.Overall, 9.6% (95% CI = 8.8–10.4) of Illinois postpartum women experienced PDS. Of Illinois postpartum women, 63.5% (95% CI = 62.1–64.9) had high composite support, 29.3% (95% CI = 28.0–30.6) had moderate composite support, and 7.1% (95% CI = 6.4–7.9) had low composite support. After adjustment for maternal characteristics, instrumental support, partner emotional support, and a composite measure of support were each significantly associated with PDS. Compared to women with high composite support, women with low composite support had six times the odds of PDS (aOR = 6.1, 95% CI = 4.5–8.2), and women with moderate composite support had nearly three times the odds of PDS (aOR = 2.7, 95% CI = 2.2–3.4).PDS was associated with instrumental support, partner emotional support, and a composite measure of support in Illinois postpartum women. Background: Few studies have compared the influencing factors of postpartum depression between primiparous and multiparous women. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of postpartum depression in primiparous and multiparous women, and provide reference suggestions for clinical nursing. Methods: A total of 429 postpartum women who gave birth at a Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Shandong Province, China, from April to June 2024,were recruited by convenience sampling. A Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Perceived Social Support Scale were used for investigation. SPSS 26.0 was used to analyze the data, and multivariate regression was employed to analyze the influencing factors of postpartum depression between primiparous and multiparous women. Results: The total prevalence of postpartum depression among 429 postpartum women (191 primiparas and 238 multiparas) was 22.14%. The prevalence of postpartum depression among primiparous and multiparous women were 21.99% and 22.27%, respectively, with no statistically significant difference [OR=1.016, 95% CI (0.642, 1.608)]. Sleep quality is a common protective factor for postpartum depression in both primiparous and multiparous women, while perceived social support is another protective factor for multiparous women. The risk factors are different in both two group, there is no risk factor found in primiparous women, the newborns health and women's expectation on newborns gender are risk factors for postpartum depression in multiparous women. Conclusions: Both primiparous and multiparous women have a high risk of postpartum depression. The ability of Black women to self‐advocate may mitigate these threats to their health. Limited research describes Black women's self‐advocacy during the perinatal period and how self‐advocacy related to other relevant concepts. The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between self‐advocacy, patient–provider relationships, and mental health outcomes among Black women in the perinatal period.This cross‐sectional descriptive pilot study recruited Black women who were either in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy or within a year postpartum to complete surveys describing their self‐advocacy (Female Self‐Advocacy in Cancer Survivorship Scale adapted for perinatal period) and maternal health outcomes (trust and comfort with maternal healthcare providers—Patient–Provider Relationship Scale; abuse and disrespect during childbirth—Mothers of Respect Index; experiences of discrimination—Experiences of Discrimination scale; depression—Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale; and postpartum posttraumatic stress—City Birth Trauma Scale).N = 40 participants were recruited between January and September 2022. Participants reported moderate levels of self‐advocacy which were associated with trust and comfort with healthcare providers (r = 0.57–0.76, p < 0.001). Feeling respected by healthcare providers was positively associated with two self‐advocacy subscales (r = 0.42–0.44, p < 0.01). Depression was inversely related to all self‐advocacy subscales (r = −0.47–0.62, p < 0.001).Black women's self‐advocacy during the perinatal period is associated with trust and comfort with healthcare providers, perceptions of respect from their providers, and perinatal depression. Background: Pregnancy and childbirth are critical life events which lead to significant changes in family structures and roles, thus having a substantial impact on partner relationship and maternal wellbeing. A dysfunctional partnership during this critical time of life has been associated with maternal depressiveness. However, sub-components of partnership quality and the causal relation with maternal symptoms of depression in the perinatal period have been sparsely studied so far. The current study aims to longitudinally assess the course of relationship quality and its sub-components from pregnancy to postpartum and to test a potential causal association with maternal symptoms of depression in the perinatal period. Methods: Differing from previous studies, partnership quality and symptoms of depression have been assessed prospectively and longitudinally from an early stage of pregnancy (second trimester) until six months postpartum. Cross-lagged panel models were applied to investigate a potential causal relationship between partnership quality and maternal depressive symptoms. Results: Relationship quality decreased significantly during the transition to parenthood (p <.05) with the steepest decline referring to tenderness (p <.001). We also found a substantial association of relationship quality and maternal depressiveness, but no indication for a clear causal direction of this association. Conclusions: Our results suggest that relationship quality and maternal depressiveness are substantially related in the perinatal period, thus pointing to the need of early prevention and intervention programs for peripartum women and their partners to prevent adverse outcome for the couple and the family. Postnatal depression necessitates timely and effective interventions to mitigate adverse maternal and child outcomes in the short term and over the life course. British south Asian women with depression are often underserved and undertreated due to stigma, language barriers, and cultural barriers. This trial aimed to test the clinical efficacy of a culturally adapted, group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-based intervention, the Positive Health Programme (PHP), delivered by non-specialist health workers for postnatal depression in British south Asian women. This study was a randomised controlled trial, with culturally adapted recruitment and an internal pilot, comparing the PHP (intervention group) with treatment as usual (control group) in British south Asian women with postnatal depression. The study was conducted at five centres across the UK. Participants were aged 16 years or older, met the DSM-5 criteria for depression, and had infants aged 0–12 months. Randomisation (1:1) was stratified by centre, with a block size of 18, and was done through an independent remote telephone service. The PHP was delivered over 12 group sessions in 4 months. The primary outcome was recovery from depression (defined as a Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HDRS] score ≤7) at 4 months after randomisation, and an assessment was also done at 12 months. Analysis was on an intention-to-treat basis including only participants with non-missing outcome data; we used a random-effects logistic regression model including fixed covariates for study site, baseline depression severity (HDRS score), parity, and years in education and a random coefficient for therapy group. This trial is registered with the ISRCTN (ISRCTN10697380). Of the 9136 individuals approached for recruitment between Feb 8, 2017, and March 29, 2020, 4296 women were eligible for and consented to screening, among whom 732 screened positive and were randomly allocated: 368 (50%) to the PHP group and 364 (50%) to the control group. Participants were mostly of Pakistani (397 [55%] of 719 with available data), Indian (176 [24%]), or Bangladeshi ethnicity (127 [18%]), with an overall mean age of 31·4 years (SD 5·2), with their youngest infants having a mean age of 23·6 weeks (14·2). At 4 months from randomisation, the proportion of participants who showed recovery from depression on the HDRS was significantly higher in the PHP group (138 [49%] of 281) than in the control group (105 [37%] of 281; adjusted odds ratio 1·97 [95% CI 1·26–3·10]). At the 12-month follow-up, this difference was no longer significant (1·02 [95% CI 0·62–1·66]). In British south Asian women with postnatal depression, a culturally adapted group CBT-based intervention could aid in quicker recovery from depression compared with treatment as usual. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) in pregnancy is a physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm by a current or former partner or spouse on a pregnant woman. It is a global public health problem that is common but underreported. Women are at increased risk of psychiatric illness in pregnancy and after delivery with the risk of major depressive disorder being highest during the postpartum period. Intimate partner violence in pregnancy may worsen this problem. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) in pregnancy, incidence of postpartum depression and the relationship between intimate partner violence, delivery outcomes and postpartum depression among booked pregnant women at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, Nigeria (AEFUTHA). Study design: This study was a prospective cohort study. Setting: The antenatal clinic, antenatal ward, labour ward, postpartum clinic and under five clinic of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, Nigeria were used for the study. Method: One hundred and thirty-seven booked pregnant women that received antenatal care at AEFUTHA who met the inclusion criteria and consented to the study, were recruited from 37 weeks to 41 weeks gestation and screened for intimate partner violence and depression. Those with depression were referred for treatment while those that met the inclusion criteria were followed up to delivery and the delivery outcomes documented. They were also followed up to six weeks postpartum when they were screened for postpartum depression. Data were collated, tabulated and then statistically analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software (version 25, Chicago II, USA). Numerical variables including participant's age, parity and gestational age were presented as mean, median, frequencies and standard deviation (Mean ± S.D), while categorical variables including occupation, level of education, social class and family type were presented as numbers and percentages. Chi-square test (X2) and relative risk was used for comparison between groups for categorical variables while Fisher's exact test was used when Chi-square test (X2) was not suitable. Binary regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between intimate partner violence and postpartum depression. A P value of ˂0.05 is considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of intimate partner violence was 52.6%, as 72 out of the 137 women recruited endured intimate partner violence. The major risk factors for intimate partner violence in the study were low level of education, low social class, polygamy and unemployment. The general incidence of postpartum depression was 29.93% while the incidence among women with intimate partner violence was 56.94%. Women with emotional violence and verbal abuse had a five-fold increase in the incidence of postpartum depression. Sexual violence and physical violence were not statistically significant risk factors for postpartum depression. Conclusion: Intimate partner violence is common as seen from the study. It is a significant risk factor for postpartum depression. Women that are emotionally and verbal abused are more likely to have postpartum depression. Perinatal depression (PD) affects individuals during pregnancy and early parenthood, resembling major depression. Recent research highlights paternal perinatal depression (PPD) in fathers. PPD has adverse effects on fathers and their children. This study assesses the Turkish version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) for Turkish fathers, aiming to provide a tool for PPD identification.This methodological study validates the EPDS for Turkish fathers and explores associations with demographic and psychosocial factors. The study involved 295 fathers with infants aged 2 weeks to 12 months. The EPDS, originally designed for perinatal depression and validated in Turkish women, was used. Fathers completed a participant information questionnaire, the EPDS, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) during clinic visits. Data on sociodemographic factors, paternal roles, and pregnancy and postpartum support were collected. Mothers also completed the EPDS. Descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and correlation tests were used.The study included fathers with an average age of 30.5 years, mostly with a high school education or higher. The EPDS had a mean total score of 3.1. Factor analysis suggested a three-factor structure for the EPDS in Turkish fathers, including anhedonia, anxiety, and depression. Confirmatory factor analysis validated the three-factor structure, with acceptable model fit indices. Positive correlations were found between fathers’ EPDS scores, maternal EPDS scores, and paternal BDI scores. The EPDS effectively discriminated between different levels of depression severity. Various factors, such as education level and lack of support during pregnancy and after childbirth, were associated with higher EPDS scores.These findings emphasize the significance of assessing and addressing PPD in fathers, supporting the use of the EPDS as a valid tool in the Turkish context. The three-factor structure aligns with international research, highlighting the importance of a multi-dimensional approach to PPD assessment. Background: As a biological marker for cellular senescence, telomere length (TL) has been linked to a variety of psychiatric disorders and adverse childhood experiences (ACE), though only preliminarily to peripartum depression (PPD). The present study sought to examine the association between TL and PPD, assessing the moderating role of ACE and genetic polymorphic variations related with the telomere machinery. Methods: Adversity was self-reported, likewise were depressive symptoms evaluated at pregnancy week 17 and 32, as well as six-weeks and six-months postpartum. TL was assessed by use of qPCR in blood samples collected during delivery from females with antenatal depression resolving postpartum, females with depression persisting to postpartum, and healthy controls. Twenty haplotype-tagging Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in the Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (TERT) and three in the Telomerase RNA Component (TERC) genes were genotyped. Results: TL was negatively correlated with severity of PPD symptoms at pregnancy week 32 and postpartum week 6. PPD was associated with shorter TL. Lastly, ACE, but not the TERT/TERC genotype, moderated the TL-trajectory association; with increasing ACE, individuals with persistent PPD symptoms had shorter TL, whereas the opposite pattern (longer TL) was observed in the controls. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) constitutes a significant mental health disorder affecting almost one fifth of pregnancies globally. Despite extensive research, the precise etiological mechanisms underlying PPD remain elusive. However, several risk factors like genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, and stress-related environmental and psychosocial triggers have been found to be implicated in its development. Main: Recently, an increased risk of PPD has been reported to be associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is characterized by the disruption of glucose metabolism, primarily attributed to the emergence of insulin resistance (IR). While IR during pregnancy seems to be an evolutionary adaptative mechanism to handle the profound metabolic alterations during pregnancy, its subsequent resolution following delivery necessitates a reconfiguration of the metabolic landscape in both peripheral tissues and the central nervous system (CNS). Considering the pivotal roles of energy metabolism, particularly glucose metabolism, in CNS functions, we propose a novel model that such pronounced changes in IR and the associated glucose metabolism seen postpartum might account for PPD development. This concept is based on the profound influences from insulin and glucose metabolism on brain functions, potentially via modulating neurotransmitter actions of dopamine and serotonin. Their sudden postpartum disruption is likely to be linked to mood changes, as observed in PPD. Conclusions: The detailed pathogenesis of PPD might be multifactorial and still remains to be fully elucidated. Background: Mothers with mild to moderate depression in pregnancy are at risk of developing postpartum depression. Midwife-led continuity of care may support maternal mental health throughout the perinatal period. Research is needed to better understand how continuity of care may support mothers experiencing depression in pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate the perspectives of mothers with mild to moderate depression and clinicians regarding continuity of care in the perinatal period. Method: Fourteen mothers and clinicians participated in individual interviews or a focus group. Analysis was conducted using inductive reflexive thematic analysis with a constructivist orientation. Results: From the perspectives of mothers and clinicians, continuity of care during the antenatal period benefitted mothers' mental health by providing connection and rapport, information about pregnancy and referral options, and reassurance about whether pregnancy symptoms were normal. The experience of seeing multiple clinicians was noted by mothers to increase distress while participants discussed the value of extending continuity of care into the postpartum period, including having someone familiar checking in on them. The importance of having a second opinion and not always relying on a single provider during pregnancy was highlighted by some mothers and clinicians. Mothers also described how multiple modes of communication with a midwife can be helpful, including the ease and accessibility of text or email. Conclusion: Mothers and clinicians perceived benefits of continuity of care for maternal mental health. Postpartum depression is a significant public health issue that occurs within the first 12 weeks after childbirth. It is more prevalent among teenage mothers compared to adults. However, the findings of the existing interventional studies cannot be readily applied to teenage mothers due to their unique psychosocial concerns. Furthermore, these findings have shown inconsistencies regarding the benefit of psychological and psychosocial interventions in reducing the incidence of postpartum depression. The current review is aimed at investigating the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in preventing postpartum depression, specifically among teenage mothers. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis manuals were utilized to identify and select relevant articles for this review. The articles were retrieved using population, intervention, control, and outcome models. The quality of each article was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA version 17. The effect size of the intervention was estimated using the standard mean difference in depression scores between the intervention and control groups. Heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using the I2 statistic and Q statistic, while publication bias was evaluated through funnel plot asymmetry and Egger's test. A total of nine eligible articles were included. While psychosocial interventions have been demonstrated to decrease the incidence of postpartum depression compared to usual maternal health care, it is worth noting that the mean difference in depression scores was significant in only three of the included studies. The meta-analysis revealed that psychosocial interventions were effective at preventing postpartum depression, with a pooled effect size of − 0.5 (95% CI: − 0.95, − 0.06) during the final postpartum depression assessment. The heterogeneity was substantial, with an I2 value of 82.3%. Although publication bias was not observed, small studies had a significant effect on the pooled effect size. The findings of this review suggest that psychosocial interventions can effectively prevent PPD, particularly within the first 3 months of the postpartum period. Pregnancy is a period in a woman's life during which she experiences physiological, psychological, and social changes. These changes can lead to various mental illnesses, including postpartum depression (PPD), which is common during the perinatal period. Postpartum depression is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for both the mother and baby. A peripartum-onset major depressive episode is defined as PPD when it occurs during pregnancy or up to 4 weeks postpartum. The frequency of this condition is extremely high. Its etiology is influenced by biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Depressed mood, anhedonia, feelings of guilt, irritability, lack of concentration, psychomotor agitation or retardation, sleep disturbance, and changes in appetite and weight can all be symptoms of PPD. There are various treatment options available, many of which are adapted from those used for major depression. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, estradiol, progesterone, psychothera- pies, electroconvulsive therapy, and brexanolone can be used to treat PPD. In addition, the newest drug approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for this condition is oral zuranolone. Background:: Pregnancy and childbirth cause various physiological, psychological, and social changes. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent issue, representing a significant public health challenge that affects mothers, their children, and families. Research indicates that many mothers with young infants experience depressive symptoms, with 10-15% experiencing major depressive episodes. Aims and Objectives: To study the prevalence and factors contributing to postpartum depression. Materials and Methods: This study included married women aged 18-35 years who delivered between June 1, 2023, and January 1, 2024, at Index Medical College and Hospital's antenatal and postnatal outpatient department (OPD). Women were approached during their third trimester and postpartum period. Exclusion criteria included preexisting conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, physical and psychiatric illnesses, multiple gestations, and previous perinatal loss. PPD was evaluated using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), with a score of 13 or higher indicating PPD. The research questionnaire was translated into the local language, and data were collected. Statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate methods using Fisher's exact test or the Chisquare test. Results: A total of 250 participants were enrolled, with a mean age of 24.7 ± 3.5 years and a mean gestational age of 38.3 ± 1.2 weeks. Screening with the EPDS revealed a PPD prevalence of 12.8% (32 out of 250 participants). Factors such as lack of family support, parity, educational status, delivery complications, unintended pregnancy, obesity, and financial problems were identified as independent determinants of PPD. Conclusion: The study found a PPD prevalence of 12.8% in this demographic region. Given the significant proportion of women affected, it is recommended that all postpartum individuals be screened for PPD to ensure prompt identification and management. Objective: To evaluate the clinical effects of Esketamine combining Sufentanil in labor analgesia and their impacts on postpartum depression. Methods: This was a retrospective study. One hundred and fifty primiparae with spontaneous labor were selected at SSL Central Hospital of Dongguan City from July 10, 2021 to May 10, 2022 as the research objects and randomly divided into two groups (each n=75). While the control group underwent epidural infusion of Sufentanil for analgesia, the study group was administered Esketamine combining Sufentanil. Compared analgesic effects, time of birth course, adverse reactions, pain intensity, scores assigned to depression and anxiety before analgesia and after delivery were made for pregnant women in both groups. Results: The response rates of the study and control groups reached 100% and 93%, respectively, with statistically significant differences (p=0.02). The time of the first, second, and third stages of labor in the study group were all significantly lower than that of the control group; showing statistical significance (p=0.00). Regarding adverse reactions showed no statistically significant differences (p=0.44). Moreover, the study group showed noticeably lower pain intensity than those of the control group during delivery, 20 minutes and one hour after delivery; and their differences were statistically significant (p=0.00). After delivery, both the SAS and SDS of the study group were respectively lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences as well (p=0.00). Conclusions: Applying Esketamine combining Sufentanil in epidural painless delivery produces rather favorable analgesic effects, shortens the time of the birth process, and improves postpartum anxiety and depression without leading to more adverse reactions. Objective • The objective of this study was to investigate and analyze the effects of esketamine combined with comprehensive nursing intervention on postoperative pain, postpartum depression, and quality of life in women undergoing cesarean section. Methods • This study included 140 parturients who underwent cesarean section in The Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University (from May 2021 to May 2022). The participants were divided into two groups: the control group and the study group, based on random allocation. The control group received traditional treatment and routine nursing care, while the study group received esketamine combined with comprehensive nursing intervention. Postoperative pain, postpartum depression, and quality of life were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and SF-36 questionnaire, respectively. Results • The two groups had no significant differences in baseline data (P > .05). The postoperative VAS scores of the study group (1.86 ± 0.65) were lower than those of the control group (3.04 ± 0.79) (P < .05). The postoperative EPDS scores of the study group (5.23 ± 1.07) were lower than those of the control group (8.11 ± 1.84) (P < .05). The postoperative physiological recovery of the study group was superior to that of the control group (P < .05). The postoperative SF-36 scores of the study group were higher than those of the control group (P < .05). Practical Implications • The combined use of esketamine and comprehensive nursing in cesarean sections offers practical benefits for patient care. Moreover, the observed accelerated physiological recovery in the study group, along with shorter hospital stays, signifies efficiency gains in healthcare delivery. (1) Background: Prenatal depression, maternal anxiety, puerperal psychosis, and suicidal thoughts affect child welfare and development and maternal health and mortality. Women in low-income countries suffer maternal mental health issues in 25% of cases during pregnancy and 20% of cases thereafter. However, MMH screening, diagnosis, and reporting are lacking. The primary goals of the present study are twofold, as follows: firstly, to evaluate the importance of screening maternal mental health to alleviate perinatal depression and maternal anxiety, and, secondly, to analyze research patterns and propose novel approaches and procedures to bridge the current research gap and aid practitioners in enhancing the quality of care offered to women exhibiting symptoms of perinatal depression. (2) Methods: We conducted a bibliometric analysis to analyze the research topic, using the bibliometric tools Biblioshiny and VOSviewer, as well as the R statistical programming language. To accomplish our goal, we obtained a total of 243 documents from the Scopus and PubMed databases and conducted an analysis utilizing network, co-occurrence, and multiple correlation approaches. (3) Results: Most of the publications in the field were published between the years 2021 and 2024. The results of this study highlight the significance of shifting from conventional screening methods to digital ones for healthcare professionals to effectively manage the symptoms of maternal mental health associated with postpartum depression. Furthermore, the results of the present study suggest that digital screening can prevent maternal physical morbidity, contribute to psychosocial functioning, and enhance infant physical and cognitive health. Background Variability in parental leave policies across graduate medical education (GME) programs in the United States complicates efforts to support resident wellness and identify best practices for resident well-being. Objective This review aims to assess how formal parental leave policies affect trainees' well-being, professional satisfaction, and performance during training. Methods A systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines was conducted and registered on PROSPERO in May 2023. Databases searched included MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central. Studies that evaluated parental leave policies of US-based GME programs and their direct impact on residents and/or fellows were included. Studies were screened for inclusion by 2 independent reviewers, and any conflicts were resolved by a third author. Results Of 1068 articles screened, 43 articles met inclusion criteria. These studies highlighted that leave durations of less than 6 weeks were associated with higher rates of burnout and postpartum depression among trainees. There was no evidence that taking parental leave increased program attrition rate; however, 3 studies reported more than one-third of trainees extended training as a result of taking leave. Trainees who had more than 8 weeks of parental leave reported more successful breastfeeding 6 months out from delivery than those with less than 8 weeks of leave. Conclusions Extended parental leave, notably beyond 6 weeks, improved trainee well-being and professional satisfaction. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) is a valuable biomarker for evaluating chronic stress in preschoolers. However, few studies have explored early life HCC and its associated factors. This prospective cohort study analysed the HCC in children aged 6–48 months and its associations with parental HCC as well as positive and negative parental mental health outcomes. We used data from the ongoing Longitudinal Examination Across Prenatal and Postpartum Health in Taiwan (LEAPP‐HIT) project, conducted in Taipei between 2020 and 2024. Hair samples were collected from both parents and children in 177 families (91 samples obtained during pregnancy and 86 during the postpartum period). The parents also completed self‐reported questionnaires. Multiple linear regression was conducted to analyse the data. We observed a significant positive correlation between parents' and preschoolers' HCC. Furthermore, maternal depression (adjusted beta coefficient [aβ] = 0.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.02, 0.16) and perceived stress (aβ = 0.15, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.26) were positively associated with preschoolers' HCC. By contrast, higher maternal eudaimonia was associated with lower HCC in preschoolers (aβ = −0.11, 95% CI = −0.20, −0.01). For parents, maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were independently associated with an increased HCC during the postnatal period, whereas maternal eudaimonia was negatively associated with HCC. Our results indicate that both mothers and fathers affect children's responses to stress. Background: Existing evidence regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on postpartum mental health is mixed, with disparate studies showing increased, stable, or even reduced risk of postpartum depression (PPD) amid the pandemic. Furthermore, although it is plausible that the pandemic impacted the mental health of mothers from vulnerable and underserved communities differentially, few studies have characterized racial and ethnic differences in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on PPD. Materials and Methods: Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data for 2018–2019 (pre-pandemic period) and 2020 (peri-pandemic period) from 40 sites (n = 110,779, representing 5,485,137 postpartum women) were used to determine whether rates of PPD changed during the first year of the pandemic. Postpartum depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 2-item. Average marginal effects and contrasts of predictive margins derived from a multivariable logistic regression model were used to compare the risk of PPD before and during the pandemic in the overall sample and across racial/ethnic subgroups. Results: Adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, we found that the overall risk for PPD remained stable (0.0 percentage points [pp]; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.7, 0.6 pp) in the first year of the pandemic. We detected no statistically significant changes in risk for PPD across seven of eight racial/ethnic groups considered; however, the risk of PPD among non-Hispanic Black women fell by 2.0 pp (95% CI: −3.5, −0.4 pp) relative to the pre-pandemic period. Purpose: Perinatal depression significantly impacts maternal and child health, with further complexities arising during the COVID-19 pandemic. This review is the first to comprehensively synthesize evidence on the prevalence of perinatal depression and its associated risk factors in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) during the pandemic period. Methods: The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022326991). This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guideline for prevalence studies. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in six databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and ProQuest. Pooled prevalence estimates were computed for both prenatal and postnatal depression. Identified risk factors were summarized narratively. Results: A total of 5169 studies were screened, out of which 58 were included in the narrative review and 48 [prenatal (n = 36) and postnatal (n = 17)] were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled depression prevalence for prenatal women was 23% (95% CI: 19–27%), and for the postnatal women was 23% (95% CI: 18–30%). Maternal age, education, perceived fear of COVID-19 infection, week of pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and social and family support were identified as associated risk factors for depression. Conclusions: Our review demonstrates an increased prevalence of perinatal depression during the COVID-19 pandemic in LMICs. It sheds light on the significant burden faced by pregnant and postnatal women and emphasizes the necessity for targeted interventions during the ongoing and potential future crisis. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the trajectory of women's depressive symptoms during the first six months postpartum, identify risk factors (sociodemographic, obstetric and personality) associated with classes, and examine associations between classes and postpartum PTSD at two months and bonding at six months. Methods: The final sample included 212 women who gave birth in the maternity wards of a large tertiary health center that were approached at 1–3 days, two months, and six months postpartum and completed a demographic questionnaire and measures of neuroticism (BFI) and postpartum depression (EPDS), postpartum PTSD (City Birth Trauma Scale) and bonding (PBQ). Obstetric data were taken from the medical files. Results: Cluster analysis revealed three distinctive clusters: "stable-low" (64.2%), "transient-decreasing" (25.9%), and "stable-high" (9.9%). Neuroticism, general-related PTSD symptoms, and bonding were associated with differences between all trajectories. Birth-related PTSD symptoms were associated with differences between both stable-high and transient-decreasing trajectories and the stable-low trajectory. No obstetric or demographic variables were associated with differences between trajectories. Conclusion: We suggest that screening women for vulnerabilities such as high levels of neuroticism and offering treatment can alleviate the possible deleterious effects of high-symptom depression trajectories that may be associated with their vulnerability. Person-centered models of care built on newborn and family needs and rights, such as nonseparation immediately after birth and during the care process, can address the complex needs of the newborn, family, and health system. This is particularly important in low- and middle-income countries, where cost-effective modalities are highly needed to accelerate the survival of newborn babies. We conducted a systematic review to explore country experiences on implementation and challenges to implement and scale-up family-centered newborn care models of care. MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases were searched to identify studies on patient-centered care and newborns between 1990 and 2023. Studies meeting our predefined inclusion criteria were quality assessed and relevant data extracted. We utilized the World Health Organization framework on integrated people-centered health services to summarize and analyze findings while highlighting patterns. Forty-one studies were included for review (including approximately 60% from low- and middle-income countries). Different research conducted over time highlighted how immediate and uninterrupted skin-to-skin care facilitates a series of critical processes for newborns, parents, and health system, including breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity rates, reduced incidence of post-partum depression, and prevention of infection and hospitalization. Thanks to the close contact of the kangaroo position or skin-to-skin contact, parents recount becoming more and more attached to and familiar with their baby, easily establishing a relationship. Overall, countries could transform the newborn care service in terms of family center care by adopting three simple rules: (i) minimizing mother–child separation; (ii) involving fathers; (iii) empowering parents from the time of birth. A paradigm shift is required to change the conventional model of provider-centric care to one of person-centered neonatal health care. Such an approach is feasible in diverse country settings and should be facilitated through political commitment and policies enabling early focus on the maternal–infant relationship. Background: Current research separately analyzed the connection between postpartum depression, fatigue, sleep and infant development. However, depression, fatigue and sleep quality often coexisted as adverse symptoms in postpartum women and influenced infant development together. This study explored the maternal postpartum symptoms on infant growth. Methods: Our study included 224 pairs of singleton full‐term mothers and their infants who underwent routine pediatric outpatient clinics. Latent profile analysis was applied to identify the latent classes based on mothers' postpartum depression, fatigue and sleep profile characteristics. We evaluated the maternal adverse symptoms and infant development using multivariable logistic regressions. Results: Totally, 224 pairs of eligible mothers (28.85 ± 4.43 years) and infants (30.93 ± 3.26 days) participated in this study. Latent profile analysis identified 3 latent groups: mild (58.04%), moderate (34.37%), and severe (7.59%) postpartum adverse symptoms. Postpartum adverse symptoms were associated with delayed development in the baby's motor level (χ2 = 6.572, p =.037) and weight‐for‐length (χ2 = 9.652, p =.008). After controlling for mother and infant related factors, postpartum adverse symptoms remained a risk factor for infant motor level (odds ratio [OR]: 4.35; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.25–15.08) and weight‐for‐length (OR: 5.53; 95% CI: 1.55–19.74). Conclusions: Maternal postpartum depression, fatigue and sleep quality are associated with infant development. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) significantly affects the welfare of mothers, infants, families, and communities. Mothers in rural areas often face low incomes, poor social security, low education levels, and inadequate medical services. These specific cultural, social, and economic aspects have led to a worsening of PPD in rural areas. However, the current situation of PPD among women in rural areas of China is still insufficiently explored. Aim: This study aims to explore the prevalence and risk factors of PPD among women in low‐income developing rural areas of China. Methods: A cross‐sectional design was used in this study. Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was applied to evaluate PPD symptoms. General demographic questionnaire, obstetrics‐/pediatrics‐related questionnaire, and psychosocial‐related questionnaire were adopted. Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) was utilized to assess experienced intimate partner violence during pregnancy and postpartum. Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) was utilized to measure their levels of social support. Results: Of the 467 participants, the overall prevalence of PPD among women in rural areas of China was 16.5%, and the average EPDS score was 8.35 (SD = 4.50). PPD occurred most frequently at 7–9 months postpartum (33.8%). Six factors associated with PPD were whether the sex of the baby was in line with the family's expectations, monthly income of partners, social support, IPV during pregnancy and childbirth, and negative life events in the last 1 year, as well as physical and mental exhaustion from caring for a baby. Conclusions: This study sheds light on the prevalence and various risk factors associated with PPD among women residing in low‐income developing rural areas of China. The findings highlighted the need for targeted interventions and support systems designed to address the specific socioeconomic and cultural difficulties encountered by rural mothers. Although numerous factors have been found to influence postpartum depression (PPD), no previous meta-analysis have systematically explored whether it is affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This study aimed to explore the influence of ACEs and their subtypes on PPD. A systematic literature search was conducted using Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Wan Fang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Chinese Biomedical Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and literature was screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality assessment and data extraction were performed on the included studies. A random-effects model was used to pool the effects. In total, 24 studies were included, and 73 independent effects were extracted from them. The meta-analysis revealed that ACE was a risk factor for PPD (odds ratio [OR] = 2.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] [2.04, 2.63]). The subgroup analysis results showed that emotional abuse was the ACE subtype most strongly related to the occurrence of PPD (OR = 2.95, 95% CI [2.08, 4.20]), followed by emotional neglect (OR = 2.87, 95% CI [1.89, 4.36]) and sexual abuse (OR = 2.81, 95% CI [1.93, 4.09]). In addition, family member incarceration (OR = 2.62, 95% CI [1.51, 4.54]), physical abuse (OR = 2.31, 95% CI [1.67, 3.19]), and physical neglect (OR = 2.15, 95% CI [1.36, 3.39]) also have strong effects on PPD. Standard models of well-child care may not sufficiently address preventive health needs of immigrant families. To augment standard individual well-child care, we developed a virtual group-based psychoeducational intervention, designed to be delivered in Spanish as a single, stand-alone session to female caregivers of 0–6 month-olds. The intervention included a video testimonial of an individual who experienced perinatal depression followed by a facilitated discussion by the clinic social worker and an orientation to relevant community resources by a community health worker. To assess feasibility and acceptability of the intervention, we conducted an open pilot within an academic pediatric practice serving predominantly Latinx children in immigrant families. Participants included 19 female caregivers of infants attending the practice, of whom 16 completed post-intervention measures and 13 completed post-intervention semi-structured interviews. Quantitative measures of acceptability and satisfaction with the intervention were high. We found preliminary effects of the intervention on postpartum depression knowledge and stigma in the expected direction. In interviews, participants described increases in their familiarity with postpartum depression and about relevant community resources, including primary care for caregivers. Participants reported an appreciation for the opportunity to learn from other caregivers and provided suggestions for additional topics of interest. Background: Mother-to-infant bonding (MIB) is foundational for nurturing behaviors and an infant's development. Identifying risk factors for difficulties or problems in MIB is vital. However, traditional research often dichotomizes MIB using cutoff thresholds, overlooking its underlying complexities. This research utilizes latent profile analysis (LPA) to discern MIB subtypes in a nationwide Japanese dataset. Methods: We conducted LPA on data from the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS), collected from 3,877 postpartum women within one year of childbirth. To empirically validate the derived profiles, we examined their associated risk factors, focusing on sociodemographic, health, and perinatal variables. Results: Four distinct MIB profiles emerged. Profile 1 indicated minimal difficulties, while Profile 4 exhibited severe multifaceted difficulties. Profiles 2 and 3 showed moderate difficulties distinguished by lack of positive affection and presence of negative affection (especially indifference), respectively. Compared to Profile 1, women in Profiles 2–4 had a higher likelihood of postpartum depression and low family support. Each profile also presented unique risk factors: medium family support in Profile 2, maternal working status in Profile 3, and pre-pregnancy underweight status in Profile 4. Notably, both Profiles 3 and 4 were also linked to increased feelings of loneliness since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: This study represents the first application of LPA to MIB, revealing distinct subtypes and their respective risk profiles. Purpose: Postpartum depression (PPD) brings adverse and serious consequences to both new parents and newborns. Neuroticism affects PPD, which remains controversial for confounding factors and reverse causality in cross-sectional research. Therefore, mendelian randomization (MR) study has been adopted to investigate their causal relationship. Methods: This study utilized large-scale genome-wide association study genetic pooled data from three major databases: the United Kingdom Biobank, the European Bioinformatics Institute, and the FinnGen databases. The causal analysis methods used inverse variance weighting (IVW). The weighted median, MR-Egger method, MR-PRESSO test, and the leave-one-out sensitivity test have been used to examine the results' robustness, heterogeneity, and horizontal pleiotropy. The fixed effect model yielded the results of meta-analysis. Results: In the IVW model, a meta-analysis of the MR study showed that neuroticism increased the risk of PPD (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.11–1.25, p < 0.01). Reverse analysis showed that PPD could not genetically predict neuroticism. There was no significant heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy bias in this result. Conclusion: Our study suggests neuroticism is the risk factor for PPD from a gene perspective and PPD is not the risk factor for neuroticism.
