This article explores the use of postage stamps by micronations, non-state entities that mimic acts of sovereignty. The stamps of micronations, although resembling postage stamps, are considered "cinderellas" in the philatelic world, as they are not issued by a government postal administration. The article examines how the philatelic practices of micronations shed light on the material aspects of sovereignty and statehood. It situates the study within the broader trend of international law scholarship that focuses on the material and visual culture of international law. A postage stamp is principally used to demonstrate that postage has been paid. However, governments also use postage stamps to convey various messages to the world, and the message the stamp contains reaches many people. Therefore, postage stamps are frequently used to embrace and disseminate an idea or belief, to convey information to a target audience, or to announce or promote an event. Additionally, philately (or stamp collecting) remains a popular hobby. Stamp collectors, who consider stamps as works of art, meticulously collect, classify, and scrutinize the details linked to stamps. Philately also has deep ties to the Olympic games. Olympic postage stamps, which were first introduced to offer financial assistance in organizing the 1896 Athens Olympics, have also served the purpose of promoting the Olympics at the international level. Furthermore, the works of ancient Greek culture and art were admirably depicted on the first Olympic postage stamps. This article focuses on the multimodal design process for a set of Valentine's Day postage stamps. It shows how semiotic resources were used to create the overall mood of the design. In particular, the style of the images made the general mood melancholic. During the process, the design was adapted to a commercial Valentine's Day context through changes in specific resources. Postage stamps are designed to convey messages that reverberate symbolically with broad swaths of the public, and their content has been employed as a window into how members of the public understand the ideas represented therein. In this rhetorical analysis, we analyze Philadelphia's Science History Institute's Witco Stamp Collection, which features 430 stamps from countries around the globe dating from 1910 to 1983, to identify how chemistry is portrayed in this ubiquitous medium. We find the vernacular of science reflected and supported by these images functions to (a) define chemistry in terms of its invisibility and abstraction; (b) uphold chemical operations as instrumental and daedal, or exceptional, in nature; and (c) delineate practitioners of chemistry as—on the whole—privileged and preternatural. Our findings reveal some of the overarching communicative tools made available to twentieth-century non-experts for articulating chemistry as an enterprise and reveal how those tools positioned chemistry in terms of values related to opacity and exclusivity. This research investigates postage stamps as a communication design medium that has a key role in the construction of national gendered commemoration. By examining the commemorative depiction of women on Israeli postage stamps, we analyze approaches to miniaturization and discuss graphic design's implications for the visual articulation of gender within national culture. We further discuss the impact of technological transformations and digitization processes on postage stamp design. We apply social semiotic methodologies, archival research, and interviews with the designers, presenting new findings pertaining to research for design. An essay is presented on visual identity program for refugee camp by making references to photographs and video recordings of Bosnian refugee families. Topics discussed include refugees from Syria and Iraq, graphic design at the Academy of Fine Art in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and designing the first postage stamps for the newly independent Bosnia.
