This study sheds light on the translation of 'Engagement Resources' in political texts from English into Arabic. It aims to specify and analyze the 'Engagement Resources' in English political texts and their renditions into Arabic texts by comparing and contrasting them based on Martin and White's Engagement System, which is part of Appraisal Theory (2005) to check whether the translators convey the same effect of these resources or make shifts. If shifts are found, how are those resources shifted in the translation process? The data of this study draw on two texts collected from the 'Voice Section' of British online newspapers 'Independent' two versions released in English and Arabic. This study hypothesizes that the failure to catch some Engagement resources of the source text (ST) led to violating the Engagement positioning in the target text (TT). After analyzing the two texts, four methods of translation led to a shift in Engagement: addition, omission, modulation, and couplet methods. This study has concluded that the real functions of these resources are depleted. In translation teaching, sight translation has been used, for decades, as a pedagogical tool to enhance students’ interpreting skills in a myriad text genres. In this study, sight translation was used as a pedagogical tool to teach translation and interpretation of political texts to 37 undergraduate third year students of the academic year 2022/2023 at the university of Dodoma, Tanzania. The 3 collected English political speeches were chunked and organized in PowerPoint form to be sight translated into Kiswahili. The student sight translator displayed its content on the wall through a projector which was connected to a personal computer. When sight translating, the other students were comparing his/her verbal renditions into the target language with the content in the source language which was displayed on the wall through a projector. The study revealed that some English political expressions that refer to the address forms of the heads of state and government, the official residence of the heads of state and government, titles of foreign dignitaries, the etiquette of recognizing meeting attendees, and the capital city when used to denote a government or country could not be easily sight translated into Kiswahili for a number of reasons. Despite the challenges that sight translation may encounter during implementation, it remains a friendliest, adaptable, and inclusive pedagogical tool in translation and interpretation classes in all levels of learning.

Supervised topic classification requires labeled data. This often becomes a bottleneck as high-quality labeled data are expensive to acquire. To overcome the data scarcity problem, scholars have recently proposed to use cross-domain topic classification to take advantage of preexisting labeled datasets. Cross-domain topic classification only requires limited annotation in the target domain to verify its cross-domain accuracy. In this letter, we propose supervised topic classification with pretrained language models as an alternative. We show that language models fine-tuned with 70% of the small annotated dataset in the target corpus could outperform models trained using large cross-domain datasets by 27% and that models fine-tuned with 10% of the annotated dataset could already outperform the cross-domain classifiers. Our models are competitive in terms of training time and inference time. Researchers interested in supervised learning with limited labeled data should find our results useful. The present study examines the strategies used by Saudi undergraduate students when translating adjective plus noun collocations and verb plus object collocations in political texts from English into Arabic. An English proficiency test, along with a translation test, were conducted to evaluate the performance of the students. The translation test consisted of 10 English collocations selected from 53 random extracts from two online articles on the BBC and The Guardian websites, focusing on the Beirut port explosions in August 2020. The results show that the literal translation technique was highly dominant in translating both types of classification. This indicates that students encounter some obstacles when it comes to determining the correct equivalents in Arabic. However, the data show that sometimes literal translation can sometimes be adequate in translating the political collocations in both types. The data also reveal that a synonymy strategy was adopted more frequently in translating the verb + object than the noun + adjective. This is mainly because the frequency of (un)restrictedness of collocation errors may be limited in political texts because the structure of political texts is different from that of other texts, in the sense that it has a limited number of culture-specific collocations that are frequently translated, and therefore an equivalent can easily be found in the target language. This study explores how natural language processing (NLP) can supplement content analyses of political documents, particularly the manifestos of political parties. NLP is particularly useful for tasks such as: estimating the similarity between documents, identifying the topics discussed in documents (topic modeling), and sentiment analysis. This study applies each of these techniques to the study of political party manifestos. Document similarity may be used to gain some insight into the way parties change over time and which political parties are successful at bringing attention to their policy agenda. Categorizing text into topics may help objectively categorize and visualize the ideas political parties are discussing. Finally, sentiment analysis has the potential to show each political party's attitude towards a policy area/topic. This study specifically applies these techniques to the manifestos produced by the political parties of New Zealand, from 1987 to 2017 (a period of significant party system change in New Zealand). In this descriptive-analytic research, different Persian time metaphors reflected in political and economic articles of Shargh Newspaper are compared in the general framework of cognitive semantics, with emphasis on Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory (1980), while using Núñez and Sweetser’s approach (2006) and mathematical logic. The goals are determining: (1) adequacy of the theory, (2) different types of time metaphor and their dominant pattern in the articles, (3) their distribution, and (4) how they are expressed. Research population consists of all political and economic articles of Shargh Newspaper in 1396 and 60 randomly chosen articles make the sample. The results approved the adequacy of the theory and indicated that time-moving metaphor with the highest frequency (72%) was the dominant pattern while other patterns were ego-moving metaphor (%18) and time-moving-without-ego metaphor (%9). Time-ego-moving metaphors (%1) didn’t make any pattern. The results revealed no significant difference between the above-mentioned metaphors in each kind of the articles but revealed a significant difference between time-moving metaphor and the others in data. Moreover, most temporal concepts were expressed via spatial concepts. This means time is more basic and vital than space in political and economic issues.

One of the publicity tools used by British and then American suffragists was theatre. Suffragist theatre was written for a clear purpose, which was none other than political propaganda and performance as part of the campaign being conducted. In many cases, the plays performed reflected the situation in which women lived, denouncing their circumstances; in others, they were didactic works, explaining in a very simple and clear way the actions that were being carried out to secure women's rights.

The article focuses on the prominent stylistic devices of the language, gives their definitions, and examines the effectiveness of their use in the political speeches of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Presidents of Ukraine, and the President of the United States of America. It studies the rhetorical strategies that help the speakers to achieve the desired goal effectively, and add persuasiveness to the addresses. The article aims to reveal the similar tendencies in rhetorical speeches used by the political leaders. The research method, which includes two stages, has been presented. The first stage consisted of material collection. The second stage consisted of two sub-stages of the study and included the description, and the systematization of the obtained data. The significance of the research lies in the fact that the similar traits in political speeches in different countries have been defined. The further studying of the political speeches of the political elites can enable to deepen the knowledge about rhetorical strategies in the sociolinguistic aspect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Propaganda as a scientific term for Polish political linguistics The purpose of the article is to provide definitions of the concept propaganda and to explain the reasons for its controversial status as a scientific term describing contemporary political texts. In lexicographic works and in the literature in the field of political linguistics, propaganda is not understood unambiguously. Polish researchers define propaganda as the spreading of some views, particular political beliefs or attitudes, as well as attempts to influence behaviour by means of persuasive and/or manipulative nature. Propaganda has negative connotations associated with its flourishing in authoritarian regimes, where it was accompanied by censorship and government control of the mass media. In Polish political linguistics, the analyzed phenomenon refers predominantly to the socialist language, but polemical voices are also heard, emphasizing the inherent entanglement of politics and propaganda and the presence of propaganda in democratic regimes, where it serves the purposes of gaining and retaining power. The term propaganda is thus not neutral and as such, according to the author, should not be used as a scientific term. W opracowaniach leksykograficznych oraz w literaturze z zakresu politolingwistyki propaganda nie jest rozumiana jednoznacznie. Polscy badacze definiują propagandę jako upowszechnianie G. Dudek-Waligóra Propaganda jako termin naukowy polskiej politolingwistyki 24 jakichś poglądów, postaw czy idei, a także jako wywieranie wpływu, którym towarzyszą środki natury perswazyjnej lub/i manipulacyjnej. Propaganda ma negatywne konotacje związane z jej rozkwitem w systemach totalitarnych, gdzie towarzyszyły jej cenzura i rządowy monopol na środki masowego przekazu. Omawiane zjawisko na gruncie polskiej politolingwistyki odnosi się przede wszystkim do języka socjalistycznego, ale istnieją również głosy polemiczne, wskazujące na nierozerwalność polityki i propagandy oraz na obecność propagandy w ustroju demokratycznym, w którym służy ona zdobyciu i utrzymaniu władzy. Termin propaganda nie jest więc neutralny, dlatego zdaniem autorki nie powinien być terminem naukowym stosowanym dla nazywania bieżących wypowiedzi polityków.

This article advances a transmedial comparison between several contemporary travelogues and travel blogs written by Chinese writers about China. The grounding assumption is that travel books and blogs are two mediated forms that realize the same generic matrix: travel writing. Building on research about classic Chinese travel writing and contemporary Internet Chinese literature, the article proposes a close reading of the texts with the aim, on the one hand, to understand how contemporary travel accounts – in print and online – follow and/or reinvent the genre, and, on the other hand, to bridge the gap between analogue and digital realms beyond their often over-accentuated differences. Findings suggest that contemporary Chinese travel books are much politicized. Contrary to traditional authors, who resorted to the genre in order to celebrate the status quo within the Middle Kingdom, today’s authors write about their travels in order to criticize the current political situation in China. Travel bloggers, instead, largely privilege a contemplative attitude towards their experiences; one that kindles a visually based and depoliticized writing that is very much in the spirit of classic texts. In this paper we study the translation of political texts. These texts are marked by a deeply ideological character, by a historical and cultural specificity directly dependent on their relationship with a particular situational context and by a sociopolitical relevance --both national and international-- that contribute to make their cross-lingual transfer an activity in which much care and expertise must be applied in order to avoid any distortion of the original message on its way from the sourcelanguage/ culture to the target-language/culture. Our objective in this context is, on the one hand, to underline the social importance of the political texts and their translations and, on the other, to describe and explain their translational difficulties, with special reference to the problems posed by political terminology and the specific features of this discursive class, among which we foreground culture, ideology and style. In relation to the latter we take into consideration campaign and parliamentary speeches. Both forms of discourse are directly related to the deliberative genre of rhetorical discourse, because they deal with matters, projects or situations of the future and the receivers have to make decisions based on them. In conclusion we propose to consider the rhetorical-cultural analysis --based on the understanding of texts as pragmatic-cultural constructions in a social framework-- of political texts as an analysis which could contribute to a deeper and more justified knowledge of their specific features and of their translational difficulties, thus enabling the translator to find the most successful and relevant solutions in each case.
