Background: Early recognition, prevention, and treatment of complications are key aspects of nursing care planning for people with Atrial Fibrillation (AF). However, recent studies suggest that nurses' knowledge of AF is only sometimes accurate. No studies are currently available in Italy. Aim: To study nursing students' knowledge of Atrial Fibrillation in an Italian setting. Methods: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in a population of nursing students from three Italian universities during the 2022/2023 academic year. The validity and reliability of the Italian version of the Atrial Fibrillation Knowledge Assessment Tool (AFKATita) were investigated. Results: 246 students (response rate 73.21%) were enrolled. The total of correct answers was Me = 18 IQR [16; 19] (theoretical range 0-21). The number of correct answers increased with age (p < 0.001), year of the course advances (p < 0.001), and in those who had direct contact with people with AF during their clinical experience (p < 0.001). The Content Validity Index (S-CVI) of the AFKAT-ita was 92.10, the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.695, and McDonald's ω was 0.726. Conclusion: Overall, students showed a moderate level of knowledge. These results provide an initial overview of the knowledge of AF in Italian nursing students; in-depth studies are desirable. Background. In 2020, the emergence of the new Coronavirus has put health professionals under enormous pressure, as they had to work in difficult and often disadvantaged situations. Prevention of symptoms such as stress, anxiety and burnout therefore become important health management goals. Aim. The aim of this pilot cross-sectional study was to assess the reliability and feasibility of a tool on Occupational Health Nurses after a Pandemic Period such as the COVID-19 pandemic (Salute Occupazionale negli Infermieri in Periodo Pandemico Covid19 - SOIC) that aims to assess the occupational health and psychological wellbeing of nurses during periods of health crisis. Methods. This study was conducted from September to November 2022. The SOIC tool is composed by two preliminary sections and a third part including five validated questionnaires (measuring burnout, work engagement, psychological symptoms, resilience, and mindful awareness). An opportunistic sample of 202 nurses working in a Teaching Hospital of Rome and members of NurSind union were invited to participate: of these, 24 nurses completed the SOIC in two subsequent occasions (T1 and T2). Results. The test-retest assessment showed no differences between the two waves (T1 and T2) in terms of median scores for all questionnaires included in the SOIC tool. The Cronbach alphas, considering all items of each questionnaire included in the SOIC tool, showed good or excellent internal consistencies. Conclusion. The test-retest assessments and the reliability analyses encouraged the usability of the SOIC tool. Furthermore, consistent associations between the five questionnaires were obtained. Background: The frequency of alarms from monitors and other electro-medical devices is of great utility but can increase the professional's workload and expose nurses in the intensive care unit to Alarm Fatigue. A recent study suggested that students in training can also experience the problem during their first clinical experiences in intensive care. Unfortunately, no data are available about the Italian panorama. To explore Alarm Fatigue among Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at the end of their internship experience in intensive care settings. Methods: Multicenter cross-sectional design. A convenience sample of nurses from 3 Italian university hospitals was recruited. The students completed the revised version of the "Alarm Fatigue questionnaire-ita" at the end of the clinical internship in intensive care settings. Results: 130 nursing students were enrolled (response rate 59.36%). The overall level of Alarm Fatigue was Me= 24.5 IQR [17.5, 30.5]. In addition, 9.23% of the sample reported errors or near misses related to Alarm Fatigue during the internship experience. The alarm fatigue level was higher in students who committed "errors/almost errors" (p=0.038) and in "student workers" (p=0.005). Discussion: The extent of alarm fatigue experienced by nursing students requires developing a preventive strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The quality assessment process, based on customer satisfaction, is fundamental in the delivery of the best care services. This is most evident in care settings where trainee students are allowed to assist the patients. The purpose of this review is to clarify whether nursing students have an impact on patients' assessment of the quality of their nursing care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines in six databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycInfo. Two co-authors independently screened titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, following explicit exclusion and inclusion criteria. Analyses included non-randomized and non-homogeneous samples, involving both selected patients and methods for assessing their satisfaction. RESULTS: After full-text screening, 30 articles were identified, but only 11 were considered pertinent to the topic of the review. The trainee-patient relationship is based on mutual help and can improve the patient experience and trainee learning. The instruments used to measure perceived quality were found to be valid and reliable. CONCLUSIONS: The studies under review show high levels of satisfaction among patients when nursing care is delivered through training, particularly when the patients who agree to be treated by nursing trainees have previous experience of hospitalization and relationships with trainees. Educational background and the empathy and communication skills of both professional nurses and trainees influence patients' perception of the quality of care and their satisfaction with it. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterized by insulin resistance accompanied by low/absent beta-cell compensatory adaptation to the increased insulin demand. Although the molecular mechanisms and factors acting on beta-cell compensatory response during pregnancy have been partially elucidated and reported, those inducing an impaired beta-cell compensation and function, thus evolving in GDM, have yet to be fully addressed. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small endogenous non-coding RNAs, which negatively modulate gene expression through their sequence-specific binding to 3'UTR of mRNA target. They have been described as potent modulators of cell survival and proliferation and, furthermore, as orchestrating molecules of beta-cell compensatory response and function in diabetes. Moreover, it has been reported that miRNAs can be actively secreted by cells and found in many biological fluids (e.g., serum/plasma), thus representing both optimal candidate disease biomarkers and mediators of tissues crosstalk(s). Here, we analyzed the expression profiles of circulating miRNAs in plasma samples obtained from n = 21 GDM patients and from n = 10 non-diabetic control pregnant women (24-33 weeks of gestation) using TaqMan array microfluidics cards followed by RT-real-time PCR single assay validation. The results highlighted the upregulation of miR-330-3p in plasma of GDM vs non-diabetics. Furthermore, the analysis of miR-330-3p expression levels revealed a bimodally distributed GDM patients group characterized by high or low circulating miR-330 expression and identified as GDMmiR- 330high and GDM-miR-330low. Interestingly, GDM-miR-330high subgroup retained lower levels of insulinemia, inversely correlated to miR-330-3p expression levels, and a significant higher rate of primary cesarean sections. Finally, miR-330-3p target genes analysis revealed major modulators of beta-cell proliferation and of insulin secretion, such as the experimentally validated genes E2F1 and CDC42 as well as AGT2R2, a gene involved in the differentiation of mature beta-cells. In conclusion, we demonstrated that plasma miR-330-3p could be of help in identifying GDM patients with potential worse gestational diabetes outcome; in GDM, miR-330-3p may directly be transferred from plasma to beta-cells thus modulating key target genes involved in proliferation, differentiation, and insulin secretion.
