Adaptation to extreme environments often involves the evolution of dramatic physiological changes. To better understand how organisms evolve these complex phenotypic changes, the repeatability and predictability of evolution, and possible constraints on adapting to an extreme environment, it is important to understand how adaptive variation has evolved. Poeciliid fishes represent a particularly fruitful study system for investigations of adaptation to extreme environments due to their repeated colonization of toxic hydrogen sulfide-rich springs across multiple species within the clade. Previous investigations have highlighted changes in the physiology and gene expression in specific species that are thought to facilitate adaptation to hydrogen sulfide-rich springs. However, the presence of adaptive nucleotide variation in coding and regulatory regions and the degree to which convergent evolution has shaped the genomic regions underpinning sulfide tolerance across taxa are unknown. By sampling across seven independent lineages in which nonsulfidic lineages have colonized and adapted to sulfide springs, we reveal signatures of shared evolutionary rate shifts across the genome. We found evidence of genes, promoters, and putative enhancer regions associated with both increased and decreased convergent evolutionary rate shifts in hydrogen sulfide-adapted lineages. Our analysis highlights convergent evolutionary rate shifts in sulfidic lineages associated with the modulation of endogenous hydrogen sulfide production and hydrogen sulfide detoxification. We also found that regions with shifted evolutionary rates in sulfide spring fishes more often exhibited convergent shifts in either the coding region or the regulatory sequence of a given gene, rather than both.

Predator–prey dynamics have led to a strong selection of prey's ability to detect and respond to information about the risk environment. Further, intrinsic factors, such as sex, may cause prey to perceive and respond to information differently. Chemical alarm cues from injured conspecifics are a classic example of how prey have evolved to use publicly available information to shape their behavior and enhance fitness, yet sex‐specific alarm reactions are rarely considered. The purpose of our study was to compare how males and females respond to conspecific chemical alarm cues in the livebearing fish species, Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora. Furthermore, we tested males and females from populations with a high‐ or low‐predation environment. Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora showed strong alarm reactions, but contrary to our predictions, showed limited variation due to sex or predation environment. We found that males and females from both populations displayed lower activity levels and increased their swimming depth when exposed to an alarm cue, despite variable and consistent baseline behaviors among individuals. Evaluating the fitness of hybrids can provide important insights into genetic differences between species or diverging populations. We focused on surface- and cave-ecotypes of the widespread Atlantic molly Poecilia mexicana and raised F1 hybrids of reciprocal crosses to sexual maturity in a common-garden experiment. Hybrids were reared in a fully factorial 2 × 2 design consisting of lighting (light vs. darkness) and resource availability (high vs. low food). We quantified survival, ability to realize their full reproductive potential (i.e. completed maturation for males and 3 consecutive births for females) and essential life-history traits. Compared to the performance of pure cave and surface fish from a previous experiment, F1s had the highest death rate and the lowest proportion of fish that reached their full reproductive potential. We also uncovered an intriguing pattern of sex-specific phenotype expression, because male hybrids expressed cave molly life histories, while female hybrids expressed surface molly life histories. Our results provide evidence for strong selection against hybrids in the cave molly system, but also suggest a complex pattern of sex-specific (opposing) dominance, with certain surface molly genes being dominant in female hybrids and certain cave molly genes being dominant in male hybrids. Abstract Widespread species often experience significant environmental clines over the area they naturally occupy. We investigated a widespread livebearing fish, the Sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna) combining genetic, life-history, and environmental data, asking how structured populations are. Sailfin mollies can be found in coastal freshwater and brackish habitats from roughly Tampico, Veracruz in Mexico to Wilmington, North Carolina, in the USA. In addition, they are found inland on the Florida peninsula. Using microsatellite DNA, we genotyped 168 individuals from 18 populations covering most of the natural range of the Sailfin molly. We further determined standard life-history parameters for both males and females for these populations. Finally, we measured biotic and abiotic parameters in the field. We found six distinct genetic clusters based on microsatellite data, with very strong indication of isolation by distance. However, we also found significant numbers of migrants between adjacent populations. Despite genetic structuring we did not find evidence of cryptic speciation. The genetic clusters and the migration patterns do not match paleodrainages. Life histories vary between populations but not in a way that is easy to interpret. We suggest a role of humans in migration in the sailfin molly, for example in the form of a ship channel that connects southern Texas with Louisiana which might be a conduit for fish migration.

In biogeography, vicariance and long‐distance dispersal are often characterised as competing scenarios. However, they are related concepts, both relying on collective geological, ecological, and phylogenetic evidence. This is illustrated by freshwater fishes, which may immigrate to islands either when freshwater connections are temporarily present and later severed (vicariance), or by unusual means when ocean gaps are crossed (long‐distance dispersal). Marine barriers have a strong filtering effect on freshwater fishes, limiting immigrants to those most capable of oceanic dispersal. The roles of vicariance and dispersal are debated for freshwater fishes of the Greater Antilles. We review three active hypotheses [Cretaceous vicariance, Greater Antilles–Aves Ridge (GAARlandia), long‐distance dispersal] and propose long‐distance dispersal to be an appropriate model due to limited support for freshwater fish use of landspans. Greater Antillean freshwater fishes have six potential source bioregions (defined from faunal similarity): Northern Gulf of México, Western Gulf of México, Maya Terrane, Chortís Block, Eastern Panamá, and Northern South America. Faunas of the Greater Antilles are composed of taxa immigrating from many of these bioregions, but there is strong compositional disharmony between island and mainland fish faunas (>90% of Antillean species are cyprinodontiforms, compared to <10% in Northern Gulf of México and Northern South America, and ≤50% elsewhere), consistent with a hypothesis of long‐distance dispersal. Ancestral‐area reconstruction analysis indicates there were 16 or 17 immigration events over the last 51 million years, 14 or 15 of these by cyprinodontiforms. Published divergence estimates and evidence available for each immigration event suggests they occurred at different times and by different pathways, possibly with rafts of vegetation discharged from rivers or washed to sea during storms. If so, ocean currents likely provide critical pathways for immigration when flowing from one landmass to another. On the other hand, currents create dispersal barriers when flowing perpendicularly between landmasses. In addition to high salinity tolerance, cyprinodontiforms collectively display a variety of adaptations that could enhance their ability to live with rafts (small body size, viviparity, low metabolism, amphibiousness, diapause, self‐fertilisation). These adaptations likely also helped immigrants establish island populations after arrival and to persist long term thereafter. Cichlids may have used a pseudo bridge (Nicaragua Rise) to reach the Greater Antilles. Gars (Lepisosteidae) may have crossed the Straits of Florida to Cuba, a relatively short crossing that is not a barrier to gene flow for several cyprinodontiform immigrants. Indeed, widespread distributions of Quaternary migrants (Cyprinodon, Gambusia, Kryptolebias), within the Greater Antilles and among neighbouring bioregions, imply that long‐distance dispersal is not necessarily inhibitory for well‐adapted species, even though it appears to be virtually impossible for all other freshwater fishes. Natural environments vary, and organisms cope with this variation in two general ways: local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity, although these strategies often overlap and interact. This study explored how local adaptation, phenotypic plasticity, and their interactions shaped phenotypic variation in populations of Poecilia mexicana, an extremophile fish living in adjacent but ecologically divergent habitats. By comparing populations from the wild with fish raised in a common-garden environment, we evaluated how genetic differentiation between populations and plasticity contributed to the phenotypic variation observed in nature. We quantified variation in the size of six organs (brain, eyes, gills, heart, liver, and gastrointestinal tract), routine metabolic rate, and body shape. We found evidence for genetic differences between populations impacting the expression of the majority of traits, in addition to or in interaction with phenotypic plasticity and other predictor variables. Overall, our results suggest that trait divergence between populations was at least in part driven by evolutionary change and not just merely by plasticity induced by environmental differences between habitats. Future studies will have to rigorously test whether evolutionary divergence was caused by natural selection and what traits represent adaptations to the different ecological conditions. Livebearing fishes (Poeciliidae) have been used as models to test several aspects of life history theory. Previous work in these fishes showed that traits such as age and size at maturity, reproductive allocation, and number and size of offspring can each be shaped by natural selection. Life history traits can also be influenced by the environment, and in some cases, such phenotypic plasticity can also be adaptive. Resource availability in the environment can affect life history trait expression with increased resources expected to result in increased investment in reproduction. Here, we test this hypothesis in the Costa Rican livebearing fish Priapichthys annectens by quantifying life history traits and comparing trait values between populations collected during the dry season versus the wet season, periods when resource availability varies. We found that life history traits related to reproductive investment, but not the timing of reproductive events, differed between seasons. During the wet season, female body condition increased, and females invested less in reproduction, having fewer but larger offspring. Irrespective of the season, larger females gave birth to larger offspring. Finally, we found that this species utilizes a lecithotrophic strategy of provisioning eggs with nutrients being deposited in the ova prior to fertilization, and that females only carry one developing brood at a time (no superfetation). This is the first study documenting the life history of P. annectens , and it adds to a growing body of work suggesting that seasonal environmental differences can induce changes in the expression of some—but not all—life history traits. The presence of bystanders can influence the behavior of a forager, which has mainly been studied in primates and birds. We tested the effect of the absence and presence of an unfamiliar audience (females, males, and their combination) near or far from a food patch on the foraging behavior of guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Our investigation includes both males and females, recognizing that different social dynamics and reproductive strategies between the sexes could lead to varied responses to audience effects. For each focal fish, we measured the latency to start feeding, bite frequency, time spent near the audience, and overall mobility. Both males and females started feeding faster when food was close to any audience type. Specifically, females exhibited a faster feeding response in the presence of a female audience. Males reduced their feeding rate in the presence of male and mixed audiences, while both sexes increased their consumption when food was close to the audience. Focal fish, irrespective of their sex, spent more time in the vicinity of the audience zone when the audience was present, but surprisingly, females spent less time with a female audience compared to others. Only females increased their mobility when the food patch was far from any audience. Here, we show that guppies adjust their foraging behavior in the presence of an audience. Highly polymorphic markers, such as microsatellites, are invaluable for the study of natural populations. However, contemporary methods for genotyping highly polymorphic variants have serious drawbacks that impede their efficiency. We created Polly, an R package with C++ source code that uses Illumina short‐read data to genotype microsatellites, detect highly polymorphic variants and identify clusters of highly polymorphic SNPs, indels and microsatellites. We tested Polly on short‐read data from Xiphophorus birchmanni (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) and Arabidopsis thaliana, finding it to be efficient and accurate both for microsatellite genotyping and polymorphic marker detection. Coercive mating is a sexual selection strategy that is likely to influence female cognition. Female harassment levels have been linked to altered brain gene expression patterns and brain size evolution, suggesting females may respond to coercive mating by investing energy into “outsmarting” males. However, females exposed to coercive males have decreased foraging efficiency and likely increased stress levels, suggesting their brain function might instead be impaired. While it is therefore likely that coercive mating impacts female cognitive abilities, a direct test of this idea is currently lacking. In this study, we investigate the impact of coercive mating on female spatial memory and cognitive flexibility in a species with prevalent coercive mating. We compared the performance of female porthole livebearers (Poeciliopsis gracilis), which had been previously housed alone or with a coercive male, in both a spatial food localization task and a reversal learning task. While we found that both single and paired fish exhibited high proficiency in learning both tasks, we found no differences in learning ability between females that had or had not experienced coercive mating. In addition, our study found that the presence of a coercive male had no impact on female fecundity, but did influence female mass and standard length. Several studies have assumed that the presence of males, particularly coercive males, may affect the cognitive performance of female fish. Anesthetics are commonly used in fish for surgery and to facilitate capture, handling and transport in aquaculture and experimental procedures. In research, the selection of the anesthetic depends on its properties and on the recovery time. Eugenol has been pointed out as an effective anesthetic for fish, alternative to traditional drugs. Although Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is widely used as a model in ecological bioassays, no anesthetic protocol has been reported for this species. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the induction time (i.e. time to reach anesthetic stage VI) and recovery time in individuals of C. decemmaculatus subjected to eugenol at a fixed concentration, according to sex and pregnancy status. Forty-one fish were divided into three groups: males, pregnant females and non-pregnant females. They were measured for total length, standard length and weight, and the condition factor (K) was calculated. No significant differences in induction and recovery times were found for sex, pregnancy status and K between groups. The distribution of Phalloceros species is generally allopatric and restricted; however, Phalloceros harpagos has a wide distribution and exhibits morphological variation among populations from different Brazilian river basins. Different species delimitation tests using cytochrome C oxidase subunit I gene sequences indicated that P. harpagos is a species complex that comprises between 7 and 9 phylogroups. The separation of the Paraná and Paraíba do Sul River basins most likely caused the diversification of these phylogroups in the Miocene period. The majority of phylogroups have a narrow distribution; however, one phylogroup has a broad distribution, being found primarily in the Paraná, Ribeira de Iguape, and Iguaçu River basins. This distribution can be attributed to possible headwater capture events caused by the reactivation of faults and erosion in the quaternary. Estimates about the times of divergence based on molecular data could be used to infer the biogeographic processes related to the diversification of South American freshwater fish. A large body of knowledge about life-history traits has arisen from research on viviparous fishes of the family Poeciliidae. Still, the wide variation among species in reproductive strategies provides an excellent opportunity to further explore how life-history traits covary and the causes of covariation patterns. In this study, we provide information on brood size, offspring mass at birth, and total reproductive allotment of six poeciliid species (Gambusia sexradiata, Poeciliopsis latidens, Poeciliopsis viriosa, Priapella intermedia, Pseudoxiphophorus jonesii, and Xiphophorus hellerii). Also, we searched for a trade-off between the number of offspring that females produce and the size of each individual offspring. We tested the hypothesis that this trade-off should be stronger in small females because of the space constraints in the reproductive tract that are inherent to a small body size. If this hypothesis were correct, we expected a strong negative relationship between number and size of offspring in small females and a weaker or undetectable relationship between these two life-history traits in larger females. We found evidence of such a size-dependent trade-off in only one species. Small females of Po. latidens that produced relatively large broods experienced the cost of a reduction in the average size of each offspring. In larger females this negative relationship was weaker. Unexpectedly, we found no evidence of this trade-off in the other five poeciliid species and, in contrast, in one species (Priapella intermedia) females that produced numerous embryos were also capable of producing relatively large embryos. We discuss potential explanations for the different patterns of covariation (or lack of covariation) between number and size of offspring that we detected in these viviparous species. Abstract Several fishes of the family Poeciliidae are commonly produced in ornamental aquaculture and also used for pest control, leading to their introduction in numerous countries. Many of these species exhibit tolerance and invasiveness, as exemplified by Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther, 1866). This report documents the presence of X. maculatus in a Caribbean coastal stream in Venezuela. Quizandal Creek has experienced significant human intervention in its lower drainage and channel area. In the final segment of the creek the fish were captured using hand nets and beach seines. The specimens were transported alive to the laboratory for evaluation and subsequently preserved according to standard methods and later were cataloged in the fish collection. 16 males ♂ and 8 females ♀ (16.6-29.4 mm SL. CPUCLA-3630) from the Quizandal Creek, part of the coastal drainage of the Borburata River, were analyzed. This is the first report on the occurrence of Xiphophorus maculatus in natural environments of Venezuela. These coastal streams are situated in a zoogeographic transition zone between regional freshwater ichthyofaunas that have a limited number of species, primarily secondary and amphidromous, which could be susceptible to the presence of introduced species. Xiphophorus fish demonstrate the ability to thrive in highly degraded environments, promoting their dispersion and amplifying the impact on the habitat and local fish, particularly small endemic fish, such as the Rivulidae and Poeciliidae.

Livebearing fishes are a common model for studying the effects of predation on prey biology. Numerous studies have found differences in life history, sexual selection, behavior, and morphology between populations of the same species that co‐occur with predators and those that do not. Alfaro cultratus is a livebearing fish with populations in different predation environments, but unlike other livebearers, this species also has an extreme body shape that is laterally compressed. Given this unusual morphology, we asked if predation environment would still predict overall body shape, as has been documented in other species. We collected specimens from both predator and no predator sites in Costa Rica and used a geometric morphometrics analysis to determine if body shape is affected by predation environment, while controlling for size and river gradient. Body shape does indeed differ between predation environments; however, the observed differences contrast with the patterns found in other livebearer systems. Alfaro cultratus in predation environments had deeper and shorter bodies and deeper caudal peduncles than those found in environments without dominant fish predators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Placentotrophy is a particular type of maternal provisioning to developing embryos, in which mothers actively provide nutrients via complex placental structures. Placentotrophy implies less pre-fertilization investment, resulting in a shift from pre- to post-copulatory sexual selection. This change can potentially result in a conflict between females and males. This phenomenon has been demonstrated at the interspecific level in viviparous fishes of the family Poeciliidae, in which males of species that lack placentotrophy have evolved traits related to pre-copulatory sexual selection such as coloration, ornaments, and courtship behavior. Placentotrophic species, on the other hand, have evolved traits associated with post-copulatory sexual selection such as long intromittent organs (gonopodium) and increased sexual coercion behavior. Here we test, for the first time at the intraspecific level, whether there is a similar relationship between a higher degree of female placentotrophy and the evolution of male reproductive traits (larger testes and longer gonopodia) in three species of the genus Poeciliopsis (P. gracilis, P. infans, and P. prolifica). We observed a tendency towards longer gonopodia in males of P. gracilis as well as the largest testes of P. prolifica males in the populations with the highest degrees of placentotrophy. However, the statistical support for these findings was relatively weak. Therefore, we failed to support the hypothesis of a selective effect of female placentotrophy on male gonads and genitalia. The mating behavior of the knife livebearer Alfaro cultratus is described in detail. During "rubbing," the male swims to a position above the female and gently moves down repeatedly touching the dorsal part of female head with the pelvic fin tips. This courtship behavior constitutes the first report of a pelvic fin male–female contact during mating in poecilids. Based on preliminary evidence, I propose that a sensory bias mechanism could mediate the evolution of signal design/mate choice in this species, which should be tested in further studies. The genus Limia is endemic to the Greater Antilles with a single species in Cuba, Limia vittata , widespread in lowland ecosystems. The limited data available regarding its population structure suggest that its levels of intraspecific divergence are lower compared to other Cuban poeciliids. Furthermore, little is known about the dispersal pathways and demographic changes experienced by present-day populations. By analysing two mitochondrial markers and testing scenarios of dispersal and vicariance, we provide insights into the evolutionary history of L. vittata. Here, we show that this species is formed by three genetically differentiated and geographically delimited groups of populations. We also found moderate intraspecific divergence and a mtDNA pattern of high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity which is consistent with a rapid demographic expansion. Our Bayesian analysis recovered dispersal from eastern to western Cuba as the most likely scenario explaining the current distribution of this species. Limia vittata exhibited a distinct regional distribution of haplogroups that corresponds to major core landmasses within Cuba, along with a signature of rapid population expansion during relatively recent palaeoclimatic changes that occurred during the formation of the archipelago. The blackstripe livebearer Poeciliopsis prolifica is a live-bearing fish belonging to the family Poeciliidae with high level of postfertilization maternal investment (matrotrophy). This viviparous matrotrophic species has evolved a structure similarly to the mammalian placenta. Placentas have independently evolved multiple times in Poeciliidae from nonplacental ancestors, which provide an opportunity to study the placental evolution. However, there is a lack of high-quality reference genomes for the placental species in Poeciliidae. In this study, we present a 674 Mb assembly of P. prolifica in 504 contigs with excellent continuity (contig N50 7.7 Mb) and completeness (97.2% Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs [BUSCO] completeness score, including 92.6% single-copy and 4.6% duplicated BUSCO score). A total of 27,227 protein-coding genes were annotated from the merged datasets based on bioinformatic prediction, RNA sequencing and homology evidence. Phylogenomic analyses revealed that P. prolifica diverged from the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) ∼19 Ma. Our research provides the necessary resources and the genomic toolkit for investigating the genetic underpinning of placentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The North American western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis (Baird and Girard, 1853), has been introduced into a number of countries around the world, primarily for the control of mosquito populations. Gambusia affinis is known to harbour several monogenean parasites, which have the potential to be co-introduced to new regions. However, despite the broad non-native distribution of this fish species, their monogenean parasites have been reported from a relatively small number of locations. Parasitological investigations have identified very few freshwater monogenean parasites from freshwater fish in New Zealand. Two monogenean parasites were recorded infesting G. affinis in New Zealand; Salsuginus seculus (Mizelle and Arcadi, 1945) (a new genus to New Zealand) on the gills and Gyrodactlyus gambusiae Rogers and Welborn, 1965, on the gills and surface of the fish. Despite the broad distribution of G. affinis, S. seculus and G. gambusiae have been reported in few countries due, perhaps, to lack of research effort on monogeneans, their small size, enemy-release, or a combination of these factors. Based on the diversity of monogeneans in other countries that are found associated with fish with non-native populations in New Zealand, it is likely that many unrecognised non-native monogeneans are established in New Zealand's freshwater ecosystems alongside their fish hosts. Further, the number of introduced monogeneans is likely to be even higher than is currently appreciated when considering non-native fish in the aquarium trade and other introduced freshwater fauna, such as terrapins. Western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis , have been introduced around the world, and can affect native fish through competition and predation. The diet of G. affinis may therefore determine the extent of their interactions with native species. We examined stomach contents of G. affinis from two ponds in central Ohio in 2010, 2015, and 2016. In Olde Minnow Pond, we collected diet data before and after the introduction of the native sunfish, Lepomis megalotis , in 2014. We also collected data for G. affinis for the same period in Wood Duck Pond that has contained G. affinis and Lepomis macrochirus for years prior to the study period. The most important prey were zooplankton, especially Chydorus sp. and Alona sp. Aquatic insects, especially chironomid larvae, were often found in stomachs, with their importance varying by year. The relative consumption of zooplankton increased dramatically in G. affinis , especially females, in Olde Minnow Pond from 2010 to 2015 but then dropped in 2016. In addition, the relative consumption of aquatic insects increased in Olde Minnow Pond after the arrival of L. megalotis compared to 2010. In contrast, the diets of G. affinis in Wood Duck Pond remained relatively similar across the study period. Male and female G. affinis in Olde Minnow Pond had different diets, whereas the diets of males and females in Wood Duck Pond were generally similar. In conclusion, the results of this natural experiment provide circumstantial evidence that the arrival of L. megalotis in Olde Minnow Pond affected the diet of G. affinis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global warming and invasive species often act synergistically to threat native communities. The Neotropical Poeciliidae have extensively been introduced to control populations of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes and are now successful invaders around the world. Poecilids introduced to a habitat in the fringe of its thermal tolerance will be increasingly more competitive as temperature increases. This can lead to either local extinction or rapid adaptation of native species. We evaluated if the introduction of two-spot livebearers (Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus) has led, after approximately 28 years, to hereditary differences between amarillo fish (Girardinichthys multiradiatus) from an invaded and a non-invaded adjacent temperate mountain lake. Laboratory-born F1 amarillo from the two lakes were raised in either presence or absence of feeding competition with two-spot livebearers. F1 females from Zempoala foraged for shorter periods and were more frequently aggressive than those from Tonatiahua, whereas Zempoala males were quicker to start foraging, did so for shorter periods, and were less likely to fight with their own, than males from Tonatiahua. Similarly, amongst fish from Zempoala reared in the presence of competition with P. bimaculatus, females were slower to start foraging and foraged for shorter periods, and males had reduced foraging and agonistic behaviour, than those reared facing only conspecific competition. We conclude that temperature-dependent behavioural differences have arisen between populations of a native fish, seemingly linked to foraging in a competitive environment and the tendency to be aggressive towards conspecific and heterospecific fish. Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that disrupts numerous biological processes, including energy production in the mitochondria, yet fish in the Poecilia mexicana species complex have independently evolved sulfide tolerance several times. Despite clear evidence for convergence at the phenotypic level in these fishes, it is unclear if the repeated evolution of hydrogen sulfide tolerance is the result of similar genomic changes. To address this gap, we used a targeted capture approach to sequence genes associated with sulfide processes and toxicity from five sulfidic and five nonsulfidic populations in the species complex. By comparing sequence variation in candidate genes to a reference set, we identified similar population structure and differentiation, suggesting that patterns of variation in most genes associated with sulfide processes and toxicity are due to demographic history and not selection. But the presence of tree discordance for a subset of genes suggests that several loci are evolving divergently between ecotypes. We identified two differentiation outlier genes that are associated with sulfide detoxification in the mitochondria that have signatures of selection in all five sulfidic populations. Further investigation into these regions identified long, shared haplotypes among sulfidic populations. The elucidation of mechanisms responsible for the reproductive isolation of species is a fundamental part of speciation research. South American poeciliid fishes in the genus Phalloceros represent a promising system in which to study the evolution of reproductive barriers between closely related species. Phalloceros are often found in sympatry with non-sister congeners, and most such species pairs have morphologically divergent female and male genitalia. In recent studies, it has been hypothesized that mismatched genitalia between co-occurring Phalloceros species might act as mechanical barriers to prevent hybridization and might help to explain the diversification of this group. However, this idea has not yet been evaluated empirically with genetic data. Here, we tested this hypothesis using morphological data in conjunction with mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data. Our study focused on Phalloceros anisophallos and Phalloceros leptokeras , two non-sister species that have mismatched genitalia and that occur together in at least four rivers in south-eastern Brazil. Despite the prevalence of hybridization between closely related non-sister species of animals, especially fish, our phylogenetically-based results detected no evidence of mitonuclear discordance and (hence historical hybridization) between the two focal species. A new species of Phalloceros is described from the Tijucas, Maruim, Aririú, Cubatão do Sul, Rio da Madre, D'Una and Tubarão river basins in southern Brazil. The new species is diagnosed among congeners by the bilateral asymmetry of a hood‐like structure located immediately anterior to the urogenital papilla of females. The hood is fused with the urogenital papilla on the right side, but free from the papilla on the left side. This hood is reported for the first time in the genus and is present in six of the 21 valid species of Phalloceros, but its bilateral asymmetry is an exclusive condition of the new species. Members of the fish family Poeciliidae (livebearing ‘tooth-carps’) have historically been used as models in medical research, behavior ecology, and biological control. This group of primarily freshwater fishes is highly tolerant to environmental factors such as salinity and warm temperatures and includes some invasive species. Here, we present the mitochondrial genome of Poecilia parae. A representative of this species was obtained from Suriname. The complete mitochondrial genome was sequenced using Oxford Nanopore technology and is 16,559 bp long. The genome contains 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), and one control region (D-loop). Phylogenetic analysis yielded topologies similar to those previously published. The data generated here will be useful in future studies of comparative biology and those utilizing environmental DNA (eDNA).

Mexico is a megadiverse region with a complex geological history, but it remains unclear to what extent the distribution of freshwater fish has been influenced by geographic barriers. This study examines the population level genetic divergence and phylogenetic relationships of species in the shortfin group of the subgenus Mollienesia (genus Poecilia), a group of live-bearing fishes that are widely distributed across Mexico, with sampling at a small geographic scale. Samples from over 50 locations were analyzed for six species by using phylogenetic and haplotype network approaches to assess genetic diversity across geographic ranges and to refine the distributions of species in this group. The results indicate that Mexican species have diversified following multiple, independent invasions from Middle America. Two species found north of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) and one transversal species exhibited weak phylogenetic structure, likely due to the lack of physiographic barriers, recent colonization, and high dispersal rates among regions. In contrast, three species found south of the TMVB exhibited strong phylogenetic structure, reflecting a longer presence in the area and multiple physiographic barriers that isolated populations. Distributional, phylogenetic, molecular, and paleontological data may be integrated to discover biogeographic patterns exhibited by the organisms. Cladistic biogeography uses information on the phylogenetic relationships between taxa and their geographic distribution to infer a sequence of area fragmentation. Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA) was performed based on the phylogenetic proposals for Cnesterodontini to hypothesize on the historical relationships among nine areas previously recognized by endemism of freshwater fish from South America. Additionally, we investigated the conservation scenario for cnesterodontines based on biogeographic, phylogenetic, and extinction criteria to establish a priority ranking for the analyzed areas. We found that the area relationships for Cnesterodontini are strongly linked to the historical patterns of evolution of the hydrographic basins, revealing well-defined scenarios of the formation of hydrological barriers between coastal river basins (i.e., Atlantic Slope) and mainly drainages running into the La Plata River system (i.e., Inland Slope). Dispersal events through headwater capture and sea-level changes explain the congruences evidenced among other fish lineages that exhibit similar diversification patterns in the Central Brazil drainages and in drainages on the Atlantic coast of South America. The ranking of priority areas for conservation established for Cnesterodontini indicates that greater attention should be directed to the regions located in the Central Coastal and Upper Parana areas, mainly in the Atlantic Forest, which represents one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots on the planet with serious threats to freshwater biodiversity. Eye regression occurs across cave-dwelling populations of many species and is often coupled with a decrease or loss in eye function. Teleost fishes are among the few vertebrates to undergo widespread colonization of caves and often exhibit eye regression with blindness. Cave populations of the poeciliid fish Poecilia mexicana (cave molly) exhibit reduced-albeit functional-eyes, offering the opportunity to investigate partial eye regression. We sequenced eye transcriptomes of cave and surface populations of P. mexicana to identify differentially expressed genes that potentially underlie eye regression in cave mollies. We identified 28 significantly differentially expressed genes, 20 of which were directly related to light sensitivity, eye structure and visual signaling. Twenty-six of these genes were downregulated in cave compared to surface populations. Functional enrichment analysis revealed eye-related gene ontologies that were under-represented in cave mollies. In addition, a set of co-expressed genes related to vision and circadian rhythm was correlated with habitat type (cave versus surface). Our study suggests that differential gene expression plays a key role in the beginning evolutionary stages of eye regression in P. mexicana, shedding further light on regressive evolution in cavefish.

Abstract We examined the morphology of the fertilized egg and the fine structure of fertilized egg envelopes of Poropanchax normani belonging to the family Poeciliidae, also known as Norman’s lampeye using light and electron microscopes. The fertilized eggs with narrow perivitelline space were found to be spherical and demersal, additionally containing small oil droplets in the vitelline membrane. Further, a bundle of adhesive filaments was observed to be present on one side of the fertilized egg. These filaments possessed remarkably high elasticity and were approximately 1-3 mm in length. The size of the fertilized egg was determined to be about 1.49 ± 0.07 mm (n = 30). The outer surface appeared smooth, and adhesive filaments originating at different location of the surface of the envelope were found to be distributed around the egg envelope and were joined together to form a single long bundle in scanning electron microscopic observation. A peak-like structure formed of several straight wrinkles was observed around the micropyle. However, the complete structure of the micropyle could not be studied due to the depth at which it was located. Additionally, the total thickness of the egg envelope was ascertained to be approximately12.5–14.5 μm. The egg envelope consisted of two distinct layers, an outer electron dense layer and an inner lamellar layer, further consisting of 10 sublayers of varying thicknesses. Collectively, it was observed that the morphological characteristics of the fertilized egg, fine structures surrounding the micropyle, outer surface, adhesive structure consisting adhesive filaments, and sections of fertilized egg envelope displayed species specificity.

Antisymmetry is a striking, yet puzzling form of biological asymmetry. The livebearing fish Xenophallus umbratilis exhibits antisymmetry in the male intromittent organ and provides a system that is well-suited for studying the nature of variation in antisymmetrical traits. Using geometric morphometrics, we test the hypothesis that because the gonopodium is critical to fitness there will not be significant differences in gonopodium shape between the two gonopodial morphs in this species. The 'sinistral Phalloceros group' consists of three species, P. aspilos , P. leptokeras and P. tupinamba , that belong to Phalloceros , a genus of freshwater fish endemic to South America. They inhabit the Paraíba do Sul Basin and coastal drainages in south-eastern Brazil. This group is diagnosed by large hooks in the medial portion of the gonopodial appendices in males and the sinistral direction of the urogenital papilla in females. We conducted a phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial (COI and Cytb) and nuclear (RAG1) haplotypes of 36 individuals sampled from 11 localities to test the hypothesis that the biogeographic history of sinistral Phalloceros was mediated by connections of coastal basins caused by lowered sea-levels during the Quaternary. We evaluated the taxonomic status of these nominal taxa by integrating molecular species delimitation methods and morphological data. Our results suggest that the three nominal taxa are synonyms, and P. leptokeras is designated as the valid species name. The geographic expansion of the P. leptokeras lineage began in the coastal region (~2.3 Mya). The phylogeographic relationships among populations partially corroborate the palaeodrainage model, but also suggest that P. leptokeras colonized the inland Paraíba do Sul drainage, overcoming the Serra do Mar mountains. Color polymorphism can be maintained in natural populations by natural selection or sexual selection. In this study, we use two different approaches to test which of these evolutionary mechanisms may explain the presence of color polymorphism in the Cuban Limia (Limia vittata), an endemic livebearing fish from Cuba. First, we investigate the role of sexual selection using traditional binary choice tests looking at both female and male preferences relative to varying degrees of black spotting in stimulus mates. Second, we assess the role of natural selection by analyzing the frequency and geographic distribution of black‐spotted and nonspotted morphs of L. vittata in natural populations from Cuba. The frequency of black‐spotted morphs is significantly higher in brackish and saltwater environments compared with freshwater habitats, which could be related to higher predation pressure in coastal ecosystems compared with purely freshwater environments. Our results suggest that habitat variation is the most important factor in maintaining color polymorphism in L. vittata. Salinity levels could be indirectly responsible for maintaining different color morphs in this species, likely due to the regulatory effect of saline gradients on predation regimes. Non-native fishes are widespread in Hong Kong and many are likely to be established. Extensive field surveys, literature reviews, and citizen science data were used to determine the diversity, geographic distribution, potential introduction sources, and known impacts of non-native freshwater fishes in Hong Kong. In total, 95 species, including five putative hybrids, were recorded. In comparison, there are 65 species of native freshwater fishes. The majority (62 species) of non-native fishes belonged to five families: Cichlidae (27 species), Cyprinidae (15 species), Poeciliidae (eight species), Xenocyprididae (eight species), and Channidae (four species). Half of all non-native species had at least one breeding population. Potential introduction sources were grouped broadly into three categories: aquarium trade (associated with 62 species and two hybrids); aquaculture (20 species and three hybrids); and water transfers from mainland China (13 species). Most of the species recorded are native to Central and South America (27 species), East Asia (21 species), Southeast Asia (15 species), or Africa (15 species). However, a lack of experimental or manipulative studies and a scarcity of historical data limits our understanding of the extent of their ecological impacts. This synthesis of all currently available information could provide a basis for future research work and policy/management strategies that seek to pre-emptively reduce the likelihood of further species introductions to minimise potential harm to the environment. Cnesterodon hypselurus is a small fish that has a restricted distribution in southern Brazil, including headwaters of the Tibagi and Itararé river basins (Upper Paraná River). This study reported C. hypselurus in a headwater of Cinzas River basin, where there were no previous records of this species, and employed microsatellite loci and mitochondrial haplotypes in a population genetic analysis. A total of 57 specimens was analyzed, including 30 from Cinzas River basin, 25 from Itararé River basin and two from Tibagi River basin. Results indicated low genetic diversity levels (HE = 0.334 and h = 0.246) for the sample from Cinzas River, suggesting reflections of a founder effect after the species had dispersed from one watershed to another, possibly by headwater captures. Since different populations were detected between the Cinzas and Itararé rivers (DEST = 0.248, P-value < 0.05) and other occurrence sites are still unknown in the Cinzas River basin, the data herein have great relevance and should be taken into account in future management and conservation actions, as well as in evolutionary studies of C. hypselurus. Guppy - Poecilia reticulata, an exotic species, is recorded from a natural freshwater in Hormuz basin, which shows the range extension of the fish to southern Iran. This fish was probably introduced as an aquarium fish, but seems it is established in Sabz-poushan Spring. This study also describes the length-weight relationship (LWR) for the 13 caught specimens of the fish. This study evaluated the sensitivity of male and female of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to ammonia. LC50-96h for males, females and combined sexes of P. reticulata was 37.33, 48.34, and 42.45 mg/L of total ammonia or 1.03, 1.34, and 1.17 mg/L of un-ionized ammonia. The mortality at the concentration of 40 mg/L of total ammonia differed between the sexes with higher mortality in males. These results have implications for production systems, since recommendations of ammonia toxicity reference values that do not consider the difference between the sexes, can lead to the mortality of males, and cause economic losses because males have higher commercial value in the ornamental market. The impacts of relying on stored sperm were evaluated in the sailfin molly, Poecilia latipinna. Females reliant on stored sperm had fewer offspring compared to remated females, but offspring size and short‐term growth rate did not differ. Thus, females may use stored sperm in cases such as previous mating with a preferred male, lack of access to mating opportunities during a reproductive cycle, or to maximize egg fertilization. Hybridization can promote phenotypic variation and often produces trait combinations distinct from the parental species. This increase in available variation can lead to the manifestation of functional novelty when new phenotypes bear adaptive value under the environmental conditions in which they occur. Although the role of hybridization as a driver of variation and novelty in traits linked to fitness is well recognized, it remains largely unknown whether hybridization can fuel behavioral novelty by promoting phenotypic variation in brain morphology and/or cognitive traits. To address this question, we investigated the effect of hybridization on brain anatomy, learning ability, and cognitive flexibility in first‐ and second‐generation hybrids of two closely related fish species (Poecilia reticulata and Poecilia wingei). Overall, we found that F1 and F2 hybrids showed intermediate brain morphology and cognitive traits compared to parental groups. Moreover, as phenotypic dispersion and transgression were low for both brain and cognitive traits, we suggest that hybridization is not a strong driver of brain anatomical and cognitive diversification in these Poeciliidae. Objective: To present a review about the knowledge of the fish of the family poecilidade in Mexico. Design/methodology/approach: The present review was carried out through the search and bibliographic compilation of literature, as well as in the consultation of articles in different databases, for its subsequent analysis. Results: Mexico has a great diversity of poeciliids with 105 species registered, 64 are endemic, most are in some category of protection, distributed throughout the national territory, mainly in the Usumacinta River basin. In this area, their reproductive biology and feeding have been studied, which vary according to the species. Their culture in Mexico, focuses on the commercialization of ornamental species both native and exotic. Limitations on study/implications: The poecilid fishes are a well study group; however, the information about the mexican species is scattered and in different areas are limited. Findings/conclusions: Mexico is the country with the greatest diversity of poecilid fish worldwide, most of which are in some category of protection, and are a group well distributed throughout the national territory, with potential as environmental indicators and toxicological studies. Background: The caudal fin of teleosts is characterized by dorsoventral symmetry. Despite this external morphology, the principal rays of this appendage connect to bones below the notochord, indicating the ventral (hypochordal) identity of this organ. Results: Here, we report that this typical architecture of the caudal fin is not fully conserved in the platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus) and the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), representatives of the Poeciliidae family. We show that in these species, 3–4 principal rays connect to bones above the notochord, suggesting an epichordal contribution. Consistently, as examined in platyfish, dorsal identity genes zic1/4 were highly expressed in these rays, providing molecular evidence of their epichordal origin. Developmental analysis revealed that the earliest rays above the notochord emerge at the 10‐ray stage of fin morphogenesis. In contrast to zebrafish and medaka, platyfish and guppies display a mirrored shape of dorsal and ventral processes of the caudal endoskeleton. Our study suggests that an ancestral bauplan expanded in poeciliids by advancing its symmetrical pattern. Conclusion: The platyfish evolved a fin architecture with the epichordal origin of its upper principal rays and a high level of symmetry in the caudal endoskeleton. This innovative architecture highlights the adaptation of the teleost skeleton. Variable platyfish, Xiphophorus variatus (Meek, 1904) (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) and eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 (Poeciliidae) from earthen ponds in west central Florida were examined for parasitic infections. At necropsy, we observed myriad nematodes (adults and eggs), which we identified as Huffmanela cf. huffmani, infecting the swim bladder, gonad, and visceral peritoneum. Nucleotide sequences (small subunit ribosomal DNA, 18S) of H. cf. huffmani from variable platyfish and eastern mosquitofish were identical; likewise for newly obtained 18S sequences of Huffmanela huffmani Moravec, 1987 from the swim bladder of red breast sunfish, Lepomis auritus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Centrarchiformes: Centrarchidae) and warmouth, Lepomis gulosus (Cuvier, 1829) from the San Marcos River (type locality for Huffmanela huffmani Moravec, 1987), Texas. The sequences of H. huffmani and H. cf. huffmani differed by 7 (1%) nucleotides. Pathological changes comprised proliferation of the tunica externa of the swim bladder in low-intensity infections in addition to inflammation, proliferation, and tissue necrosis of swim bladder, peritoneum, and gonad in high-intensity infections. The lesion was severe, affecting the cellular constituents of the swim bladder wall and reducing the size of the swim bladder lumen; potentially reducing swim bladder physiological efficiency. The present study is the first record of a freshwater species of Huffmanela Moravec, 1987 from beyond the San Marcos River, first record of a species of Huffmanela from a livebearer, first nucleotide sequences and phylogenetic analysis for Huffmanela, and first evidence that an infection by a species of Huffmanela causes pathological changes that could impact organ function. We sought to detect whether predator cues. in the form of a predatory u·ading bird model or chemiciii cues from wading bird feces, alter personality traits iii Eastern Mosquitofish related to their use of the em ironnient and migration as water levels fatl. We filined fish exploring an unknown environment with different visual and chemical predator cues and collected data related to holdness and exploration. We observ·ed an additive effect of both types of predator cues on boldness: predator cues increased holdness. measured by a reduced latency to exit a refuge und faster times to reach food bait. However. we saw no substantial effect on exploration-related traits. The results imply that Eastern Mos quitolish are stinitilated to mos ement by predator presence or are more to lerant of risk but are not necessarily more likely to explore novel areas. The relationships between seasonally varying hydrology. seasonal predators. and the need for seasonal migration by small lish populations are complex and synergistic.
