This study examines global patterns in what has come to be called the 'climate justice movement.' The characteristics of 1,617 protests that were motivated partly or entirely by concerns about global warming, and were undertaken in 92 countries over a recent twelve year period, are analyzed. Key geographic, tactical, and organizational features of these protest events are then described. The paper highlights strengths and challenges facing this global social movement, and concludes with a discussion of strategies that might allow for the strengthening of climate protest actions in an era when the threat of disruptive global warming is increasing. This study examines the extent to which specific social and environmental objectives have been achieved in the new urbanist community of Orenco Station (Portland, Oregon). House-level surveys were conducted in Orenco Station, as well as a traditional suburb and two long-established urban neighborhoods. Survey data reveal high levels of social interaction in the new urbanist community, as compared to the comparison neighborhoods. The analysis also reveals a higher level of walking, and an increase in the occasional use of mass transit, in the new urbanist community. However, the majority of residents in all four neighborhoods (including the new urbanist neighborhood) rely on single occupancy vehicles for their regular commute. In sum, this study shows that Orenco Station is very effective in achieving its social objectives, modestly effective in encouraging the occasional use of mass transit, and not very effective in increasing primary reliance on mass transit for commuting. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This analysis examines the history and contemporary dynamics of social conflict in global energy industries. The paper begins with an historical review of patterns of labor conflict in coal, nationalist unrest in oil, and citizen mobilizations against nuclear power industries. I identify key strategies and sources of strength which allowed specific social movements to impact energy industries across the world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I then describe the clean energy movement that is emerging in this era, and highlight key historical lessons that might be used by this embryonic social movement to accelerate a shift toward a more sustainable global energy system in the twenty-first century.
