Mutation breeding offers a simple, fast, and efficient way to rectify major defects without altering their original identity. The current research aimed to study interesting traits in a mutant population generated by gamma rays. Five gamma rays doses (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 Gy) were applied to develop M1 and M2 mutant populations from the Egyptian rice (Oryza sativa L.) 'Giza177'. Both populations were evaluated in the field during two successive years 2022 (M1) and 2023 (M2). Several traits related to growth and yield were recorded such as plant height, number of branches and panicles, panicle weight, grain yield, and harvest index. Significant differences were found among radiation treatments for most traits. Overall, low radiation doses (100, 200, and 300 Gy) promoted the growth and productivity of plants; however, high doses (400 and 500 Gy) decreased these traits and increased the number of sterile plants. The effect of radiation doses was different on some traits between M1 and M2. The mutant population M2 displayed several promising mutant lines with desirable traits; early flowering (4-7 d earlier), short plant height (< 95 cm), panicle length (> 23 cm), tiller number per plant (> 25), and grain yield per plant (> 43 g). Conclusively, low gamma rays doses (inferior to 300 Gy) are of interest in generating desirable traits and promising lines. The interaction of P and Zn is a crucial factor affecting plant growth and yield. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effects of P and Zn on P-Zn distribution in safflower tissues and seed yield. A two-year study was conducted in farmer fields in northeastern Turkey during 2014 and 2015 years. P applications consisted of four levels (0, 3, 6 and 9 kg P2O5 da−1) that were allotted to the main plots. Sub-plots were composed of three Zn levels (0, 0.5 and 1 kg Zn da−1). The results showed that P and Zn applications had a significant effect on the P and Zn concentration of straw, head, seed, and yield. P concentration in straw, head, and seed increased significantly with increasing P and Zn levels. Zn concentration decreased with high P levels compared to the control, while it increased with increasing Zn levels regardless of P application. At low P levels, yield did not respond to Zn treatments; however, at high P doses, Zn application resulted in a dramatic increase in yield compared to the control. In order to increase seed yield, instead of P and Zn sole application, their combined application was very effective, and doses of 9 kg P2O5 da−1 and 0.5 kg Zn da−1 showed the optimum performance. In conclusion, this study revealed that in P- and Zn-deficient soil, P treatments increased seed yield remarkably, but the combined application of P and Zn resulted in even higher yield increases. Summary: Branch angle (BA) is a critical morphological trait that significantly influences planting density, light interception and ultimately yield in plants. Despite its importance, the regulatory mechanism governing BA in rapeseed remains poorly understood. In this study, we generated 109 transcriptome data sets for 37 rapeseed accessions with divergent BA phenotypes. Relative to adaxial branch segments, abaxial segments accumulated higher levels of auxin and exhibited lower expression of six TCP1 homologues and one GA20ox3. A co‐expression network analysis identified two modules highly correlated with BA. The modules contained homologues to known BA control genes, such as FUL, YUCCA6, TCP1 and SGR3. Notably, a homoeologous exchange (HE), occurring at the telomeres of A09, was prevalent in large BA accessions, while an A02‐C02 HE was common in small BA accessions. In their corresponding regions, these HEs explained the formation of hub gene hotspots in the two modules. QTL‐seq analysis confirmed that the presence of a large A07‐C06 HE (~8.1 Mb) was also associated with a small BA phenotype, and BnaA07.WRKY40.b within it was predicted as candidate gene. Overexpressing BnaA07.WRKY40.b in rapeseed increased BA by up to 20°, while RNAi‐ and CRISPR‐mediated mutants (BnaA07.WRKY40.b and BnaC06.WRKY40.b) exhibited decreased BA by up to 11.4°. BnaA07.WRKY40.b was exclusively localized to the nucleus and exhibited strong expression correlations with many genes related to gravitropism and plant architecture. Background: MicroRNA396 (miR396) plays an important role in the regulation of plant growth and development by repressing the expression level of its target growth-regulating factor (GRF) family genes. In our previous study, we found that overexpression of miR396 negatively regulated both tillering and biomass yield in switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.). We, therefore, speculated that blocking the expression of miR396 could enhance switchgrass tillering and biomass yield. Here, we produced transgenic switchgrass plants overexpressing a target mimicry form of miR396 (MIM396) in wild type (WT) and Os-MIR319b overexpressing switchgrass plant (with higher enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency, but reduced tillering), in which the expression of miR396 was blocked. The phenotype and biological yields of these plants were analyzed. Results: Blocking miR396 to improve its target PvGRFs expression in switchgrass improved the tiller number and dry weight of transgenic plants. Further morphological analysis revealed that MIM396 plants increased the number of aerial branches and basal tillers compared to those of wild-type plants. The enzymatic efficiency of MIM396 plants was reduced; however, the total sugar production per plant was still significantly higher than that of wild-type plants due to the increase in biomass. In addition, blocking miR396 in a transgenic switchgrass plant overexpressing Os-MIR319b (TG21-Ms) significantly increased the PvGRF1/3/5 expression level and tiller number and biomass yield. The miR156-target gene PvSPL4, playing a negative role in aerial and basal buds outgrowth, showed significant downregulated in MIM396 and TG21-Ms. Those results indicate that miR396-PvGRFs, through disrupting the PvSPL4 expression, are involved in miR319-PvPCFs in regulating tiller number, at least partly. Conclusions: MIM396 could be used as a molecular tool to improving tiller number and biomass yield in switchgrass wild type and miR319b transgenic plants. Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for plant growth and yield. Low phosphate use efficiency makes it important to clarify the molecular mechanism of low P stress. In our previous studies, a P efficiency gene ZmAPRG was identified. Here, we further screened the upstream regulator ZmNF-YC1 of ZmAPRG by yeast one hybrid (Y1H) assay, and found it was a low inorganic phosphorus (Pi)-inducible gene. The results of dual luciferase assays, expression analysis, and ChIP-qPCR assays showed that ZmNF-YC1 is a positive regulator of ZmAPRG. Overexpression of ZmNF-YC1 improved low P tolerance, whereas knockout of ZmNF-YC1 decreased low P tolerance in maize. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC), yeast two hybrid (Y2H) assay, and yeast three hybrid (Y3H) assay further showed that ZmNF-YC1 can interact with ZmNF-YB14, and recruit ZmNF-YA4/10 to form NF-Y complexes. Transcriptional activation assay confirmed that the NF-Y complexes can activate the promoters of ZmAPRG. Meanwhile, transcriptome and metabolome analyses indicated that overexpression of ZmAPRG improves low P tolerance by regulating lipid composition and photosynthetic capacity, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters provided evidence in support of this hypothesis. Furthermore, overexpression of ZmAPRG increased grain yield in inbred and hybrid maize under low P conditions. Little attention is paid to the mitigating effect of different potassium (K) levels on sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) growth performance in response to drought stress (DS). A pot experiment was performed under DS conditions along with four K levels (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha−1, denoted as DK0, DK1, DK2 and DK3 respectively), and 120 kg ha−1 of K2O application under normal watering was set as control (CK). Results showed that the plant height, specific leaf weight, leaf water content, chlorophyll content, crop growth rate and biomass were significantly decreased by 6.9%, 15.3%, 7.3%, 17.9%, 55.6% and 34.1%, respectively, as compared to CK whereas K could alleviate the adverse effects of drought on the aforementioned parameters, and the mitigation was more prominent as K rates increased. The decrease in capsule number per plant (1.72 g) primarily accounted for yield loss (1.95 g) induced by DS. Expectedly, K supply compensated for the yield reduction to an extent and the maximum compensation was recorded under DK3, which increased by 50.0% as compared to DK0. Additionally, enhanced yield and yield components were positively correlated with K accumulation as it was further evidenced by significantly increased K uptake in plant tissues. For every extra 1 g of K absorbed by the plant, the yield per plant would increase by 16 g However, the K utilization efficiency showed a downward trend along with increased exogenous K supply under DS. The production of essential oils by steam distillation is invariably associated with large amounts of organic waste which is normally disposed of or returned to the fields, although it may still contain some valuable components. In particular, Cannabis sativa essential oil produced by steam distillation of the apical part of industrial hemp plants yields a soaked biomass residue that may contain high-value cannabinoids. From the perspective of sustainable exploitation of agricultural resources, a method to extract cannabidiol (CBD) from such waste was demonstrated and scaled-up, using bioethanol as a renewable bio-based solvent and without requiring chromatographic separation, with an overall yield of 10.1 mg CBD per g waste. The work paves the way to an integrated complete utilisation of industrial hemp byproducts. Furthermore, two alternative lipase-mediated chemo-enzymatic derivatisations have been designed and optimised for the conversion of the recovered CBD into cannabielsoin (CBE), an underexploited cannabinoid with attractive bioactivity. Ascorbic acid (AsA) plays an indispensable role in plants, serving as both an antioxidant and a master regulator of the cellular redox balance. Ascorbate oxidase (AO) is a blue copper oxidase that is responsible for the oxidation of AsA with the concomitant production of water. For many decades, AO was erroneously postulated as an enzyme without any obvious advantage, as it decreases the AsA pool size and thus is expected to weaken plant stress resistance. It was only a decade ago that this perspective shifted towards the fundamental role of AO in orchestrating both AsA and oxygen levels by influencing the overall redox balance in the extracellular matrix. Consistent with its localization in the apoplast, AO is involved in cell expansion, division, resource allocation, and overall plant yield. An increasing number of transgenic studies has demonstrated that AO can also facilitate communication between the surrounding environment and the cell, as its gene expression is highly responsive to factors such as hormonal signaling, oxidative stress, and mechanical injury. This review aims to describe the multiple functions of AO in plant growth, development, and stress resilience, and explore any additional roles the enzyme might have in fruits during the course of ripening. Abiotic stress reduces plant yield and quality. WRKY transcription factors play key roles in abiotic stress responses in plants, but the molecular mechanisms by which WRKY transcription factors mediate responses to drought and osmotic stresses in apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) remain unclear. Here, we functionally characterized the apple Group III WRKY gene MdWRKY115. qRT-PCR analysis showed that MdWRKY115 expression was up-regulated by drought and osmotic stresses. GUS activity analysis revealed that the promoter activity of MdWRKY115 was enhanced under osmotic stress. Subcellular localization and transactivation assays indicated that MdWRKY115 was localized to the nucleus and had a transcriptional activity domain at the N-terminal region. Transgenic analysis revealed that the overexpression of MdWRKY115 in Arabidopsis plants and in apple callus markedly enhanced their tolerance to drought and osmotic stresses. DNA affinity purification sequencing showed that MdWRKY115 binds to the promoter of the stress-related gene MdRD22. This binding was further verified by an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Flowering regulation is a reflection of plant self-adaptation to the environment and is the main determinant of plant yield. The quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping of agronomic traits associated with the flowering stage of Agropyron Gaertn. was conducted using a cross-pollinated (CP) hybrid population with a total of 113 plant lines between A. mongolicum Keng Z2098 and A. cristatum (L.) Gaertn. Z1842 under four different environmental conditions and the genetic map constructed of 1,023 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. The results showed that 28 QTLs were detected on seven linkage groups. Each QTL explained 0.39–18.46% of the phenotypic variation, with a logarithm of odds (LOD) value ranging from 2.52 to 30.51. Specifically, QTLs were identified for various characteristics: one QTL identified for tiller number (TN), two for plant height (PH), three for days-to-flowering (DTF), five for flag leaf length (FLL), three for flag leaf width (FLW), three for spike length (SL), eight for spike width (SW), one for spikelet number per spike (SNS), and two for flower number per spike (FNS). One stable QTL controlling the SW was detected in two environments at the same loci and was located at 26 cM (Marker29867–Marker26864) on chromosome 5, showing a positive genetic effect. The two QTL enrichment regions suggested that the QTLs might contribute to trait correlation or pleiotropic genes. This study aimed to clarify the effects of drought during flowering period on the carbon and nitrogen metabolism, growth, and yield of Tartary buckwheat. Tartary buckwheat cultivar Jinqiao 2 was treated with well-watered (CK), slight soil-drought stress (LD), moderate soil-drought stress (MD), and severe soil-drought stress (SD), with the soil water potential maintained at − 0.02 to − 0.03, − 0.04 to − 0.05, − 0.05 to − 0.06, and − 0.06 to − 0.07 MPa, respectively. With prolonged growth period and an increase in drought stress, the antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of substances and activities of enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism in Tartary buckwheat leaves initially increased and then decreased. Meanwhile, the contents of malondialdehyde and superoxide anion showed a continuous. LD treatment induced the highest antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of substances and activities of enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism but the lowest contents of malondialdehyde and superoxide anion in Tartary buckwheat leaves. Compared with CK, LD treatment increased the grain number, 1000-grain weight (MTS), and yield per plant by 6.52%, 17.37%, and 12.35%, respectively. In summary, LD treatment can increase the antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of substances and activities of enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism, thus enhancing the adaptability of Tartary buckwheat to drought stress and increasing the yield per plant. Drought stress (DS) is one of the important abiotic stresses facing cash crops today. Drought can reduce plant growth and development, inhibit photosynthesis, and thus reduce plant yield. In this experiment, we investigated the protective mechanism of AMF on plant photosynthetic system by inoculating Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis(P.py) with a clumping mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) under drought conditions. The drought environment was maintained by weighing AMF plants and non-AMF plants. The relative water content (RWC) of plant leaves was measured to determine its drought effect. DS decreased the RWC of plants, but AMF was able to increase the RWC of plants. chlorophyll a fluorescence curve measurements revealed that DS increased the OKJIP curve of plants, but AMF was able to reduce this trend, indicating that AMF increased the light absorption capacity of plants. DS also caused a decrease in plant Y(I) and Y(II). ETRI and ETRII, and increased Y(NO) and Y(NA) in plants, indicating that DS caused photosystem damage in plants. For the same host, different AMFs did not help to the same extent, but all AMFs were able to help plants reduce this damage and contribute to the increase of plant photosynthesis under normal water conditions. • Strawberry plants supplemented with nutrient formulation 2 (hydroponic) perform better growth and showed 2.19-fold increase in fruit yield as compared to soil control group plants. • Strawberry plants grown in Treatment 3 (semi- hydroponic) perform better growth and had 3.08-fold increase in fruit yield as compared to soil control group plants. • Strawberry plants cultivated in soilless hydroponics showed better growth, nutrient uptake, physiology, fruit yield and anthocyanin content. The widely grown octoploid strawberry (2n = 8x = 56) (Fragaria × Ananassa Duch.), cherished for its delectable flavour, rich nutritional content, and pleasing aroma has consistently held a significant position in global fruit market. Despite of rising demand, strawberry plants are not grown universally, likely due to variations in weather conditions across regions, available of infectious soil pathogen and insufficient knowledge of soilless hydroponic cultivation. The current research aims to establish an efficient nutrient medium that enhances the growth and yield of strawberry (Fragaria × Ananassa Duch.) Cv. Winter Dawn, using soilless hydroponic and semi-hydroponic cultivation methods. The fruit fresh weight and total fruit yield of formulation 2 treated plants (EC 2.41 mScm−1) in hydroponic condition exhibited a 1.73-fold and 2.18-fold higher respectively as compared to soil control plants. Among the five different growing medium treatments in semi-hydroponic condition, the fresh weight and total strawberry fruit yield was found to be maximum in treatment 3 and observed 2.04-fold and 3.03-fold increase respectively as compared to plants grown in soil control condition. The high yield may be due to higher uptake of macronutrients (NPK) by the plants supplemented with F2 formulation and T3 substrate medium the plants. As a result, the strawberry fruits of these plants accumulated higher amount of anthocyanin, which ultimately enhanced the fruit quality. The studies concluded that formulation 2 in hydroponic and treatment 3 in semi-hydroponic were most effective in terms of growth, nutrient uptake, physiology, fruit yield and anthocyanin content. High-temperature and drought events significantly impact crop growth and development. In the soybean-producing region of the Guanzhong Plain in China, understanding the dynamics of these climatic phenomena is vital for soybean yield preservation. Through a fixed-position observation experiment that analyzed four growth stages, nine agronomic traits, and soybean yield per unit area from 1998 to 2023, this research evaluated the characteristics of high-temperature and drought processes in various growth stages. It also examined the influence of high-temperature processes, drought processes, and their combined effects on agronomic traits and yield. The results indicate the following: (1) High temperature was a constant factor during the soybean growth period, with temperature-related indices markedly surpassing those related to drought. Notably, the occurrence of high-temperature and drought events was more prevalent during the flowering–podding stage than at the podding or grain-filling stages. (2) High temperature profoundly affected soybean yield components, primarily through a decrease in the number of grains per plant during the flowering–podding stage, subsequently impacting the grain weight per plant and yield. In years with extremely high temperatures, the soybean plant height was reduced by 6.1 to 15 cm, the main stem node number decreased by 0.1 to 2.9, the branch number decreased by 0.2 to 0.6, the number of pods per plant decreased by 4.8 to 13.7, the number of grains per pod decreased by 0.1 to 0.3, the number of grains per plant decreased by 13.5 to 32.6, the grain weight per plant decreased by 3.8 to 6.9 g, and the 100-grain weight decreased by 0.1 to 4.5 g. The common impact of high temperature combined with drought processes in different growth stages was reflected in the reduction in the number of branches by 0.1 to 1.4 and the reduction in the number of grains per pod by 0.02 to 13.7. This study underscores the importance of addressing the quantitative effects of climate change and extreme weather on soybean yield, which could help to develop effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. In the face of climate change, developing resilient crops is crucial for global food security in the 21st century to feed a growing population. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) plays a vital role in ensuring global food and nutritional security. Traits like early flowering enable the crop to mature faster, thereby shortening the growing window and reducing yield losses caused by moisture and heat stresses during the reproductive phase. However, issues like limited genetic diversity in this trait remain unaddressed. To address this gap, our study aims to comprehensively assess genetic variability and trait associations in 158 lentil accessions. In the present study, we observed significant variations for days to 50% flowering (67–90 days), days to maturity (109–122 days) and 100 seed weight (1.69–2.68 g) throughout a period of two consecutive years (2020–2021 and 2021–2022). The observed variability in these traits offers a valuable avenue for the improvement of lentil yield through targeted selection and hybridization. Additionally, correlation analysis showed negative correlation between days to 50% flowering and grain yield per plant, while plant height had a significant (P < 0.01) positive correlation with all traits except yield per plant. Furthermore, we identified specific germplasm with exceptional traits that hold significant potential for future breeding programmes. The genotypes EC 223197-A and EC 267696 were identified for early flowering with high yield, and other genotypes that were identified for various traits would serve as breeding material for the introgression of these traits into elite cultivars. Growing concerns regarding health and eco-safety have led to a resurgence in the recognition of natural products. Although plant colorants are often mentioned in ethnobotanical studies in northern Thailand, they have not been comprehensively examined. This study aims to (i) investigate the colorant plants used by ethnic minorities in northern Thailand and (ii) compare colorant plants used among the groups in northern Thailand with other regions worldwide. Data on colorant plants used by ten ethnic groups across 142 villages in northern Thailand were extracted in a systematic review of 42 published references. The importance of the colorant plant species was evaluated using the ethnobotanical index "use value" (UV), and the homogeneity of knowledge was assessed using the "information consensus factor" (ICF). The similarity of colorant plants used among the ethnic minority groups and beyond was evaluated using Jaccard's index. The 42 published references included information about 104 colorant plant species belonging to 85 genera and 43 families from seven provinces in northern Thailand. This represents nearly half of the 212 colorant plant species reported across all 72 provinces in Thailand. The most important species were Strobilanthes cusia and Morinda angustifolia, which are sources of blue and red colors. Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, and Lamiaceae were the plant families with most species used as colorants. The colorant plant species yielded ten different color shades, with blue being the most prevalent. The Jaccard's index varied from 0 to 0.27 among the northern Thai ethnic minorities and from 0 to 0.13 for regions outside of northern Thailand. The regions located closest to northern Thailand exhibited the highest degree of similarity. This study provides valuable insights into the traditional knowledge and usage of dye plants in northern Thailand, contributing to preserving the cultural heritage and providing basic knowledge for the sustainable use of natural colorants for modern applications. Background: Encrusted seeds receive a thinner coating than encrusted seeds and the coating process is halted before full roundness is achieved. This is beneficial for soybean seeds and enhances water-use efficiency during germination. Additionally, adding essential nutrients to seeds promotes germination and growth, enabling soybean plants to grow faster and to have a higher yield. Methods: Soybean seeds were encrusted with 3.45 g/kg NH4NO3, 4.60 g/kg NaH2PO4.H2O and 1.87 g/kg KCl, using vermiculite as the encrusting material and 0.4% w/w aqueous-carboxymethyl cellulose as the binder. The encrusting process was carried out in a rotary drum (Model SKK12) spinning at 40 rpm and the seeds were evaluated for seed quality parameters. Result: Encrusting seeds with all three types of plant nutrients had a positive impact on enhancing seed quality compared to nonencrusted seeds. In particular, encrusting seeds with 50 g/kg vermiculite and 1.87 g/kg KCl did not hinder the germination process. Moreover, it enhanced both the germination rate and speed of germination. Additionally, it promoted plant growth, including fresh and dry root weight, fresh shoot weight, fresh and dry plant weight, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, seed weight per plant and pod weight per plant. Therefore, encrusting seeds with 50 g/kg vermiculite and 1.87 g/kg KCl is recommended to enhance the quality of Chiang Mai 60 soybean seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The present germplasm of cluster bean lack the needed natural variability for developing early maturing short statured lines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the magnitude of heritable variability stimulated through induced mutation in M3 generation. Methods: M3 generation seeds of cluster bean variety MDU1 treated with gamma rays, electron beam and combination of gamma ray with EMS were used in the present investigation. The biometric observations were recorded on ten selected M3 plants from each family of every treatments for six traits viz., plant height, days to first flowering, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length and pod yield per plant. The same method was followed for recording observations on untreated parental materials also. Result: Studies on the variability parameters indicated that the phenotypic variance, genotypic variance, heritability and genetic advance were higher in combination treatment for all the traits. The shortest mutant and the earliest flowering (3M11) was observed in combination of 100 Gy of gamma ray+20 mM EMS. Mutant for the highest number of clusters (3M3) was observed in combination treatment of 300 Gy gamma ray with 20 mM EMS. The mutants for the highest number of pods per plant (3M1 and 3M2) and the highest pod yield (3M1) were identified at 400 Gy of gamma ray treatment. In the cultivation of crops in recent times, in addition to taking care of the balanced supply of nutrients to plants and the protection of soil resources, it is also important to take into account the non-productive factor by implementing production systems based on balanced fertilisation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of soil kind and the application of a new fertiliser based on a urea and ammonium nitrate solution with potassium thiosulphate (UAN-KTS) on the yielding and biometric characteristics of spring wheat, spring rape, and maize to determine the optimal N:K:S ratio. An increase in the soil kind increased the weight of 1000 spring rape seeds, the yield of maize fresh matter, a reduction in the height of spring wheat and maize plants, a reduction in the yield of spring wheat grains and straw, and the yield of the fresh and dry matter of spring rape straw. A higher nitrogen dose promoted the growth of spring rape at the later growing stage and maize and had a positive effect on the yield of spring wheat grains and straw, spring rape seeds and straw, and the above-ground parts of maize. The application of potassium fertilisers caused a significant increase in the spring rape plant height, an increase in the yield of spring wheat grains and straw and spring rape seeds and straw, the above-ground parts of maize, a reduction in the plant height at the beginning of the spring wheat growing period, and a reduction in the weight of 1000 spring rape seeds (only on the soil with rich quality). The fertiliser with the N:K2:S2 ratio had a particularly favourable effect on the yielding of spring wheat. In the cultivation of maize, the same effect was most often obtained under the influence of fertiliser in the ratio of N:K1:S1 on the weaker soil fertilised at the same time as a higher dose of nitrogen (N 1) and N:K2:S2 (in other cases). In the case of spring rape, generally, fertiliser with N:K1:S1 was the strongest, although, in some objects, a higher yield was achieved under the influence of N:K2:S2. The existence of statistically confirmed correlations (expressed as the percentage of the variability observed) between the soil kind and the fertilisers applied and the yielding and biometric characteristics of the plants were observed. Tetranychus urticae is an important pest of tomato crops globally, affecting plant yield and growth. Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium robertsii have the potential to control T. urticae. We investigated the influence of two B. bassiana (i.e., WG-12 and WG-19) isolates and one M. robertsii (WG-02) isolate when colonizing different plant organs (leaves, stems, and roots) and their influence on the growth of tomato plants, through foliar, root-dipping, and seed-soaking application techniques. We also examined the acaricidal activity of the three isolates against T. urticae (female adults), spraying tomato leaf discs with each isolate separately. After 28 days, WG-12 and WG-19 colonized 97 and 91% of the leaves after foliar inoculation, whereas WG-02 exhibited the lowest leaf colonization (76%). The height of the tomato plants, the root length, the number of leaves, and the weight of the biomass above and below the ground were enhanced significantly after inoculation with WG-02 vs. B. bassiana isolates and control. The complete mortality of T. urticae was caused by WG-12 and WG-02 after 10 days, whereas WG-19 killed 94% of the adults. Background: An investigation was performed to identify epistasis, additive, dominance components of genetic variation and yield and yield variability attributing characteristics by triple test cross testing involving three testers (P1, P2 and F1) and ten rice lines. Methods: The study materials consisted of F1 seeds of three crosses, involving six parents namely, ASD16, ADT47, ASD18, CO51, TKM9 and MTU 7029. They are evaluated in randomized complete block design with three replications. Observations were reported for seven traits, namely plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of productive tillers per plant, length of panicle, number of grains per panicle, weight of 1000 grains and yield of grain per plant on five randomly selected plants per replication. Result: The segregating population of three crosses exhibited wide range of variability for most of the traits. The difference between GCV and PCV was low for most of the characters indicated less influence of environment. Among the three crosses ASD18 X CO15 recorded high percent of heritability and genetic advance for grain yield per plant. The estimate of total epistasis revealed that i type of epistasis (additive X additive) was highly significant for number of tillers per plant, number of productive tillers per plant, panicle length and 1000 grain weight. The effect of the additive (D) variance was very important for all the traits except the number of grains per panicle. Across all traits, the degree of dominance (H/D)1/2 was less than unity (< 1) suggesting, partial of dominance. Since, the pre dominance component of epistasis in autogamous crop is additive X additive (i type), it was suggested that the selection may be post ponded to later generation until all the non-additive components of variance has been mitigated to additive components. The present study assessed soil preparation in terms of the advantages it provides in lowering the physical obstacles and their influence on soybean cultivation, with reference to its establishment, development and yield, apart from quantification of the energy demand for tractor performance. The experiments were performed in the field adopting the randomized block design with a two-factor scheme (6x2). Factor A included a variety of soil preparations performed during the off-season of the soybean crop. Sowing was accomplished using the same fertilizer deposition mechanism only, and the areas having no soil preparation done were sown using various other fertilizer deposition mechanisms from the seeder, namely: (A1) sowing without soil preparation (SSPS)+double disc in the seeder (DD); (A2) SSPS+turbo disc (DT); (A3) SSPS+furrowing rod (HS); (A4) plow harrow+DD; (A5) scarified+DD and (A6) subsoiled+DD. Soil preparations before sowing were done on days 52 and 98 days, respectively, during the first and second harvests. Factor B included two soybean cultivars, namely: (B1) Nidera 6601 and (B2) Brasmax Valente. No interaction was observed between the factors investigated. While the scarification+DD showed the need for higher fuel consumption, the results were increased productivity. For the seeder-linked mechanisms, the HS gives more extensive root development of the plants and grain yield. The aim of this experiment is to evaluate the impact of chitosan-NPK slow-release fertilizer (CS-NPK SRF) on the germination and growth of silk tree and rice in different planting patterns, as well as to assess the nutrient release rate of the SRF. The germination test followed a complete randomized design, incorporating a single factor (fertilizer type), namely no fertilizer (F0), SRF CS 0.5% weight 0.03 g (F1), SRF CS 0.5% 0.01 g (F2), SRF CS 0.7% 0.03 g (F3), SRF CS 0.7% 0.01 g (F4), and conventional NPK fertilizer (F5). The growth test utilized a 2-factor split-plot design, with the primary factor being the planting pattern (sengon/rice monoculture-SM/RM and sengon-rice agroforestry-AF) and the second factor being the fertilizer type. Results indicate that F2 and F4 yielded the highest germination and growth values in both plants, although not significantly different from F0. These findings suggest that CS-NPK SRF has the potential to enhance plant growth. The AF pattern exhibited lower growth compared to SM/RM, attributed to plant competition. CS-NPK SRF demonstrated a slower nutrient release (47.65% N; 85.01% P; 31.80% K) compared to conventional fertilizers. BACKGROUND: Achieving a larger berry size accompanied with even ripening are demanded by producers in growing muscadine cultivars. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of fruit thinning on berry size and quality in two muscadine grape cultivars, 'Triumph' a bronze‐fruited cultivar bearing hermaphrodite flowers, and 'Supreme' a dark black‐fruited cultivar bearing female flowers. Thinning was performed before bunch closure and only one cluster per cane was retained. RESULTS: Results indicated a significant interaction of treatments and cultivars on berry weight and berry diameter. In 'Supreme,' berry weight and berry diameter were significantly increased where thinning was performed, and difference in plant yield between thinned and not thinned vines was not significant. For 'Triumph,' thinning had no significant impact on berry weight and diameter, but yield was ultimately reduced. Other physico‐chemical characters were not affected by fruit thinning. However, differences were observed between both cultivars for these characters. The values of antioxidant scavenging activity (ASA) and total phenolic content (TPC) were 62.7% and 21.7% higher in 'Supreme' as compared to 'Triumph,' irrespective of the thinning treatments. Being a colored cultivar, 'Supreme' berries have higher anthocyanins than 'Triumph,' which has a negligible amount of anthocyanins. The ASA exhibited a strong positive correlation with TPC and anthocyanin content of muscadine grapes. There was also a significant positive correlation between TPC and anthocyanins. CONCLUSION: Cluster thinning of some muscadine grape cultivars may improve individual berry size without affecting overall plant yield or the fruit color, firmness, biochemical attributes and bioactive compounds. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. SUMMARY: The yield of maize (Zea mays L.) crops depends on their ability to intercept sunlight throughout the growing cycle, transform this energy into biomass and allocate it to the kernels. Abiotic stresses affect these eco‐physiological determinants, reducing crop grain yield below the potential of each environment. Here we analyse the impact of combined abiotic stresses, such as water restriction and nitrogen deficiency or water restriction and elevated temperatures. Crop yield depends on the product of kernel yield per plant and the number of plants per unit soil area, but increasing plant population density imposes a crowding stress that reduces yield per plant, even within the range that maximises crop yield per unit soil area. Therefore, we also analyse the impact of abiotic stresses under different plant densities. We show that the magnitude of the detrimental effects of two combined stresses on field‐grown plants can be lower, similar or higher than the sum of the individual stresses. These patterns depend on the timing and intensity of each one of the combined stresses and on the effects of one of the stresses on the status of the resource whose limitation causes the other. The analysis of the eco‐physiological determinants of crop yield is useful to guide and prioritise the rapidly progressing studies aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to combined stresses. SUMMARY: Global warming, climate change, and industrial pollution are altering our environment subjecting plants, microbiomes, and ecosystems to an increasing number and complexity of abiotic stress conditions, concurrently or sequentially. These conditions, termed, "multifactorial stress combination" (MFSC), can cause a significant decline in plant growth and survival. However, the impacts of MFSC on reproductive tissues and yield of major crop plants are largely unknown. We subjected soybean (Glycine max) plants to a MFSC of up to five different stresses (water deficit, salinity, low phosphate, acidity, and cadmium), in an increasing level of complexity, and conducted integrative transcriptomic‐phenotypic analysis of their reproductive and vegetative tissues. We reveal that MFSC has a negative cumulative effect on soybean yield, that each set of MFSC condition elicits a unique transcriptomic response (that is different between flowers and leaves), and that selected genes expressed in leaves or flowers of soybean are linked to the effects of MFSC on different vegetative, physiological, and/or reproductive parameters. Our study identified networks and pathways associated with reactive oxygen species, ascorbic acid and aldarate, and iron/copper signaling/metabolism as promising targets for future biotechnological efforts to augment the resilience of reproductive tissues of major crop plants to MFSC. In addition, we provide unique phenotypic and transcriptomic datasets for dissecting the mechanistic effects of MFSC on the vegetative, physiological, and reproductive processes of a crop plant. With the world's population growing at an alarming rate, there is an urgent need to improve food security. This study aimed to assess forage dry matter yield and plant density under different herbicide treatments at Kubedlana arable lands. The study was carried out using eight treatments consisting of seven herbicide treatments and a control. Seed mixtures of seven legume species were broadcasted in 24 plots of 3 m × 5 m size. Herbicide treatments including Bendioxide (BEN), Glyphosate (GLY), Haloxyfop-R methyl (HAL), Haloxyfop-R methyl and Bendioxide (HBE), Paraquat (PAR), Bendioxide (BRR), and Paraquat (PRR) were applied individually in three plots. Dry matter production and plant densities were determined in five randomly distributed 0.25 m2 quadrats per plot. The results revealed that GLY had a significantly (p < 0.05) higher effect on the DM yield compared with other treatments. Both BRR and HBE significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the DM yield. GLY and HBE significantly reduced (p < 0.05) the grass density in 2017 and BRR significantly affected (p < 0.05) the legume density in May 2017 and May 2018, respectively. These results indicate that the application of GlY and HAL resulted in the reduction of grass density. Furthermore, none of the applied chemicals negatively influenced the legume density. A field experiment on the effect of zinc and molybdenum application on the yield of lentil was carried out at The University of Agriculture Peshawar during the Rabi season of 2021. The experiment was carried out in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Four levels of molybdenum (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha-1) and 0.5% zinc foliar spray at different intervals of lentil crop (control, 50 days after sowing, 100 days after sowing, 50 days after sowing + 100 days after sowing) were tested in the experiment. The results revealed that 3 kg ha-1 of molybdenum enhanced plant height (55 cm), nodules plant-1 (25), branches plant-1 (7), days to flowering (107) and maturity (159), dry matter of leaves at the flowering stage (64 g m-2), dry matter of leaves at the maturity stage (113 g m-2), dry matter of branches at the physiological maturity stage (304 g m-2), dry matter of pods at the maturity stage (439 g m-2), pods plant-1 (92), seeds pod-1 (2.0), 1000-seed weight (31 g), biological yield (3207 kg ha-1), and seed yield (1002 kg ha-1). Zinc foliar spray (0.5%) at 50 days after sowing + 100 days after sowing of lentil crop improved the dry matter of leaves at the flowering stage (62 g m-2), days to first flowering (109), days to physiological maturity (157), dry matter of leaves at the physiological maturity stage (111 g m-2), dry matter of pods at the physiological maturity stage (435 g m-2), pods plant-1 (91), 1000 seed weight (32 g), biological yield (3236 kg ha-1) and seed yield (1026 kg ha-1). Lastly, scatterplots revealed a significant correlation of grain and biological yield with their components. It is concluded that molybdenum application at a rate of 3 kg ha-1 and 0.5% zinc foliar spray at 50 days after sowing + 100 days after sowing of the lentil crop increased seed yield and is thus recommended for the Peshawar region. The primary objective of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) variety testing programs is to identify cultivars that have high cane yields and good ratooning ability (RA). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of six RA indices to estimate RA among sugarcane varieties and to identify an index well suited to predict RA in long‐term ratoon crop cycles. The six indices were as follows: ratoon crops yield means, second ratoon to plant cane yield ratio, final ratoon crop to plant cane yield ratio, mean of ratoon crops to plant cane yield ratio (RP), linear regression, and quadratic regression. Data from four variety trials consisting of eight post‐release varieties plus a control, harvested early, mid, and late in the cropping season for over six crop cycles, were used to estimate the RA indices. To identify indices that can predict RA in long‐term ratoon crop cycles, simple linear regression analyses were used to compare the RA indices derived from 6‐year crop cycles and similar indices derived from data from 111 commercial fields harvested over 11 successive crops. Coefficient of determination (R2) values plotted against their respective ratoon crop numbers were used to determine the minimum number of ratoon crops required to accurately predict RA indices for the 11‐year crop cycle. The six indices varied in their rankings of the RA of varieties, emphasizing the importance of identifying the most appropriate indices for different ratooning practices. Based on its highest R2 value of 0.92, the RP index was identified as the most accurate index to predict RA in long‐term ratoon crop cycles requiring a minimum of five successive crops. The present research was conducted to examine different parameters of variability, correlations, and path coefficients associated with yield and yield-related traits in aerobic rice. The analysis of variance indicated noteworthy variations among the genotypes for all the traits investigated. Among them, flag leaf area and alkali spreading value showed high PCV and GCV. Except for days to fifty per cent flowering, days to maturity, and amylose content, the remaining traits demonstrated substantial heritability combined with high genetic advance as percentage of mean. The correlation analysis revealed significant positive association between grain yield per plant and several traits, namely effective tillers per plant, test weight, chlorophyll content, and length breadth ratio. Traits such as test weight, effective tillers per plant, and flag leaf area showed a positive direct effect on grain yield per plant. Therefore, it is crucial to give priority to traits that exhibit significant positive correlations and substantial direct effects during selection process. A total of 50 genotypes were evaluated during Kharif 2022 in three different locations in Tamilnadu, India. The data on seed yield per plant was subjected to AMMI and GGE biplot analysis for stability study. The IPCA values explained 100% and 98.8% variation in AMMI and GGE biplot respectively. Results from both analyses inferred that the genotypes viz., Mash 114, Mash 1008, VBN (Bg) 4 and VBN 10 were stable across the environments with high mean seed yield per plant. Hence these varieties can be utilized for cultivation in varied environments of Tamilnadu. The present study explicates the genetics of 15 (eight yield traits and seven quality traits) basmati traits by employing generation mean analysis in six crosses of basmati rice crosses. Generation mean analysis is a biometrical tool which not only can identify presence of epistasis but also explain its types and role in inheritance of traits. Simple and Joint scaling test indicated role of epistasis in inheritance all the six crosses except for alkali spread value in the cross HUBR10-9 x PuB-1509, which showed dominance gene action. 90 individual tests each of simple and joint scaling tests divulged role of one or the other type of epistasis in inheritance of different traits in all the six crosses except for alkali spread value in cross HUBR10-9 x PuB-1509, which showed dominance gene action. Complementary digenic interaction were observed for yield per plant trait; however, other traits showed equal importance of complementary and duplicate digenic interaction in inheritance of different traits examined in the present study. Most of the traits were governed by epistatic gene action which suggested that traits of such population can be improved when the selection process is delayed. Rice (Oryza sativa L.), a semi-aquatic crop cultivated in diverse environments from sea coasts to high altitudes, faces submergence issues impacting one-third of global cultivation. Effectively choosing superior offspring with a range of genetic traits is vital for improving yield stability, particularly in the development of submergence-tolerant varieties. This is accomplished by comprehending gene action through the generation mean analysis. This experimental material comprised six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, B1, and B2) obtained from two rice crosses viz., ADT 45 x APD 19002 and CO 54 x APD 19002 involving three parents, examining twelve traits. In the cross ADT 45 x APD 19002, traits like days to fifty per cent flowering, plant height, number of productive tillers per plant, flag leaf width, total number of grains per panicle, number of filled grains per panicle, and single plant yield exhibited opposite signs of dominance (h) and dominance x dominance (l), indicating a prevalence of duplicate epistasis. Simultaneously, additive(d) and additive x additive(i) gene effects were displayed by days to fifty per cent flowering, total number of tillers per plant, panicle length, flag leaf width, total number of grains per panicle, and single plant yield. In cross CO 54 x APD 19002, traits such as days to fifty per cent flowering, plant height, flag leaf width, number of filled grains per panicle, spikelet fertility, and single plant yield suggested predominance of duplicate epistasis. Meanwhile, additive and additive x additive gene effects predominantly influenced the days to fifty per cent flowering, spikelet fertility, and single plant yield. These findings propose the potential for improvement through later-generation selection, emphasizing the integration of selection with screening for submergence tolerance to develop high-yielding submergence-tolerant varieties. A half-diallel cross involving nine diverse brinjal genotypes, excluding reciprocals, yielded thirty-six combinations for the investigation of combining ability and gene action related to yield components. Varied genetic differences were observed among the genotypes for analyzed features, indicating that both additive and non-additive gene actions are influencing most traits. Examination of the overall combining ability effects highlighted JBR-5, JBR-3, and JBR-4 as effective general combiners for both fruit yield per plant and fruit and shoot borer infestation. Crosses demonstrating substantial specific combining ability effects in fruit yield also displayed noteworthy impacts on one or more components of yield. Promising combinations like JBR-3 X JBR-5, JBL-1 X JBR-5, and JBL-2 X JBL-3 showed potential for varietal improvement, pending multi-location yield trials to confirm their effectiveness. The most favourable cross, JBR-3 X JBR-5 (0.60), demonstrated significantly positive SCA effects for yield per plant, coupled with high and positive effects for fruit length and number of fruits per plant. Further, it also demonstrated enhanced fruit and shoot borer resistance. Most traits exhibited high narrow-sense heritability, suggesting a predominant role of additivity in phenotypic variability. Two sets of 28 interspecific HxB hybrids generated in LxT fashion, along with their parents were evaluated for 11 yield and fibre quality parameters. GCA variances were lower than SCA variances for all the characters in both sets, as indicated by their lower ratios suggesting predominance of non-additive gene action. Based on both per se and gca effects, GJHV 374 BT, RAJAT BT, ICB 39 and CCB 141 in Set I and GJHV 374 BT, SURAJ BT, ICB 176 and SUVIN in Set II were found to be the best parents which could be utilized for the hybridization programme to obtain superior segregants with yield and fibre qualities. The hybrids viz., RAJAT BTxICB 99, RAJAT BTxICB 34,SURAJ BTxICB 39, GJHV 374 BTxICB 264, SURAJ BTxICB 264 and SURAJ BTxICB 284 showed significant sca effects. Hence, it may be concluded that the above hybrids are the best specific combiners for different yield-contributing and fibre-quality traits. The sca effect was found to be positive in17 crosses and 11 crosses for single plant yield in set I and II, respectively. Background: The yield levels in mung bean reached a plateau, which emphasizes breeding for varieties with improved productivity. The basic requirements of any breeding include the understanding of different genetic parameters of various yield related traits along with the knowledge with regards to interrelationships and cause and effect of those relations among the quantitative traits. Methods: In the present investigation, sixty germplasm lines were evaluated using augmented randomized complete block design in respect of eleven quantitative traits for three years i.e., during kharif seasons of 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 to understand the genetic architecture of different genetic parameters along with associations and their cause and effects of different traits on grain yield. Result: The pooled analysis revealed significant variability for majority of traits. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed in case of pods per plant, clusters per plant, plant height, test weight, seeds per pod, pods per cluster and grain yield indicating probable operation of additive gene action in inheritance of these traits. Clusters per plant and pods per plant which registered high GCV, high heritability and high genetic advance as percent of mean. The association studies revealed significant associations of pods per plant, clusters per plant, pods per cluster, branches per plant, days to maturity, pod length with grain yield per plant at both phenotypic and genotypic levels in desirable direction. Further, it was found that all these six traits which had significant association with yield also established significant magnitude of direct effects in desirable direction which contributed to the significant associations hence, can be considered simultaneously during selection. Root architectural traits at the seedling stage have been demonstrated to be crucial for the efficient uptake of nutrients and drought tolerance in wheat. A total of seven QTLs were identified for the five root traits, with six possible novel QTLs for LRN, RHL, RD and TRV, accounting for 4.98–12.17% of phenotypic variation. One QTL (QLrn.qau-5D.2), controlling lateral root number, was fine mapped an approximate 5.0-Mb interval harboring 80 annotated genes, including five auxin-related genes. We further validated that QLrn.qau-5D.2 in NILTAA10 significantly enhanced yield-related traits, such as plant height, spike length, spike compactness, tiller number per plant and grain yield per plant, as comparison with NILXX329. Collectively, these results provide vital insights for fine-mapping QTLs associated with LRN, SRN, RHL, RD and TRV and facilitate the root morphologic designs for enhancing yield performance. To elucidate the variation characteristics of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) content and accumulation in cotton at different yield levels, a two-year experiment was conducted using cotton variety Lumianyan 24 under four N treatments (506, 402.5, 299, and 195.5 kg ha−1, designated as N1, N2, N3, and N4, respectively). The four P and K fertilization ratios were (PK-M1, 25% P and K applied at squaring stage (SS) and 75% at the bloom-bolling stages (BS)), 50%:50% (PK-M2, 50% P and K applied at each stage), 75%:25% (PK-M3, 75% P and K applied at SS and 25% at the BS) and 100%:0% (PK-M4, total P and K applied at SS). The results showed that the N content (Nc), P content (Pc), and K content (Kc) of cotton plants at high yield levels were 23.3%, 44.2%, and 31.6% higher than those at low yield levels. In addition, the reproductive organs maintained higher Pc and Kc at high yield levels, and the Nc, Pc, and Kc exhibited positive linear correlations with yield, while Nc/Pc, Nc/Kc, and Kc/Pc had significant negative correlations with yield. In conclusion, seed cotton yield was mainly limited by Nc at low yield levels and affected by Pc and Kc at high yield levels. Then, when 0.85 < Nc/Kc < 1.0 at the full squaring stage (FS), 0.8 < Nc/Kc < 1.0 at the full flowering stage (FF), 4.3 < Nc/Pc < 6.7 at the early-full bolling stage (EFB) and 4.9 < Nc/Pc < 7.1 at the late-full bolling stage (LFB), there is a high yield potential of 7000–9000 kg ha−1. Cowpea is an essential economic crop in underdeveloped and developing countries mainly grown by small farmers. In terms of seed yield and some agricultural characteristics, this study was carried out to determine the genetic structures and the general and specific adaptability of the genotypes. The trial, which included F1 hybrids and parents, was established under Konya ecological conditions with 3 replications in 2020 in the "Random Blocks Trial" design. Based on the results of the preliminary analysis of variance, it was determined that there was sufficient variation in the hybrid populations formed in terms of all traits examined. Nonadditive and dominant genes were found to be important in all traits examined. In the study, general adaptability was found to be important for the other traits examined, except the seed number per pod, seed number per plant, seed yield per plant, and protein yield per plant, and the effects of special adaptability were significant for all traits examined. Considering their general combining abilities, it was found that Ülkem, Sırma, and Pekşen cultivars should be used as rootstocks in breeding programs aimed at increasing yield and Pekşen and Ülkem cultivars in breeding programs to increase protein levels. When the specific combining abilities, heterosis and heterobeltiosis values are evaluated together, the hybrid combinations "Pekşen × Sırma", "Ülkem × Pekşen" and "Karagöz × Sırma" with the best performance in terms of, seed yield per plant and "Pekşen × Amazon", "Sırma × Pekşen", "Sırma × Karagöz" and "Ülkem × Pekşen" with the most outstanding give better performance in terms of protein ratio were found to be promising. Bacterial panicle blight (BPB), incited by Burkholderia glumae, has impacted rice production globally. Despite its significance, little is known about the disease and the virulence pattern of the causal agent. BPB is a major challenge in the rice‐growing belts of North‐western India. We have characterized the 21 BG strains using the 16S rRNA and the gyrB gene‐based sequence approach in the present study. The gyrB gene‐based phylogenetic analysis resulted in geographic region‐specific clustering of the BG isolates into three clades. The BG isolates from Delhi‐National Capital Region (Delhi NCR) (Clade 1) and Uttar Pradesh (UP) (Clade 2) were separated into two clades and the BG isolates from Uttarakhand and Haryana clustered together in a single clade (Clade 3). Likewise, we sequenced the eight major virulence‐associated genes viz., toxA, toxB, lipA, lipB, pehA, pehB, flhC and flhD present across the genome of B. glumae and identified their interacting proteins through STRING analysis. Furthermore, virulence screening of 21 BG strains revealed the variation in the percentage of grains infected and the yield of rice plants. The most virulent BG1 strain resulted in the highest disease incidence (82.11%) and lowest yield (11.12 g/plant) and BG10 came out as the least virulent strain. Besides, the inoculation at three stages of the plant revealed that the booting stage of rice is the most susceptible stage which resulted in maximum disease percentage and less yield. The advancement of hybrid technology plays a crucial role in addressing yield plateau and diminishing resources in rice cultivating regions. The knowledge of genetic diversity among parental lines is a prerequisite for effective hybrid breeding program. In the current study, a set of 66 parental lines was studied for diversity based on both morphological characters and microsatellite SSR markers. The genetic variability parameters unveiled that number of productive tillers per plant, single plant yield and hundred grain weight exhibited additive gene action. Mahalanobis D2 statistics grouped the genotypes into ten clusters based on yield and grain traits. The principal component analysis identified four PCs with eigen value more than one accounting for 71.28% of cumulative variance. The polymorphic SSR markers produced 122 alleles among which the marker RM474 recorded the highest values for Polymorphic Information Content (0.83) and heterozygosity index (0.85). The genotypes were assembled in seven clusters based on jaccard distances using the Unweighted Pair Group method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA). The population structure divided the entire population into 3 subpopulations. In both clustering, there was difference in the assembling of genotypes, but, good performing genotypes identified through PCA were positioned in different clusters in both approaches. The genotypes CBSN 495 and CBSN 494 located in different clusters were identified as the potential restorers for high yielding and short duration hybrids. The hybridization among CRR Dhan 310, CRR Dhan 315, IR64 DRT, CB 17135 and WGL 347 can be performed to develop climate smart varieties with improved nutrition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Root‐knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp., are considered one of the major biotic constraints for global rice production. Although the role of Meloidogyne graminicola in root‐knot disease progression is well investigated, negligible research has been performed to understand the damaging potential of M. incognita in rice. In this study, the comparative infection biology of M. incognita and M. graminicola was investigated in the basmati rice cultivar PB1121 growing in Pluronic gel medium and soil. Intriguingly, M. incognita laid eggs outside the galled root, whereas M. graminicola egg masses were deposited inside the galled root. This differential egg‐laying pattern can be correlated with their specific adaptations in irrigated and upland rice production systems. Although M. incognita induced a greater number of galls than M. graminicola, M. graminicola gall sizes were comparatively larger than those of M. incognita. The greater reproductive success of M. graminicola than M. incognita did not cause any difference in their yield reduction potential in PB1121. PB1121 was equally vulnerable to M. incognita and M. graminicola in terms of reduction in plant height, tiller numbers per plant and grain yield per plant. Our research suggests that M. incognita also causes economic damage to rice, and nematode management tactics must consider the damaging potential of both nematode species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A two-year study was conducted at Giza Agricultural Research Station, Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Egypt, to evaluate the productivity of six genotypes of soybeans under three mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates, as well as their resistance to insects, in comparison to four check varieties. Methods: The study took place during the 2021 and 2022 summer seasons. The treatments included three mineral N fertilizer rates (N1=67% of N fertilizer rate "71.4 kg N/ha", N2=33% of N fertilizer rate "35.7 kg N/ha" with seed inoculation by Bradyrhizobium japonicum and N3=100% of N fertilizer rate of the recommended rate "107.1 kg N/ha") and ten soybean genotypes (H4L4, H6L198, H18L54, H29L115, H129, Misr 10, along with Dr101 and Giza 111 "resistant" and Giza 82 and Crawford "susceptible"). The experiment used a split plot design with three replications. The main plots were assigned the mineral N fertilizer rates, while the subplots, were assigned the soybean genotypes. Result: Fewer cotton leaf worms, whiteflies and leaf miners were found after applying N1 or N2. In the 6th week from sowing, Misr 10 and Dr 101 had fewer cotton leaf worms and whiteflies. In contrast, throughout the 7th, 8th and 9th weeks from sowing, Misr 10 and H6L198 had fewer cotton leaf worms. Misr 10 had fewer leaf miners in every week and fewer whiteflies in the 7th, 8th and 9th weeks from sowing. In the 6th week of the first season, Misr 10, Dr101, H18L54 and Giza 111 that received N1 or N2 had fewer cotton leaf worms; in the 7th and 9th weeks from sowing, Misr 10, Dr101 and H6L198 harbored fewer whiteflies. The lowest pod weight/plant, seed yield/plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield/ha and HI were obtained by using N3. Higher biological yield/ha, seed yield/plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield/ha and HI were attained by Misr 10. In the second season, seed yield per plant and seed yield per hectare were significantly affected by the interaction between soybean genotypes and mineral N fertilizer rates. Growing Misr 10 with 67 per cent N of the recommended rate increased seed yield/plant and seed yield/ha, along with fewer cotton leaf worm, whiteflies and leaf miners compared to the commercial cultivar Giza 111 receiving the recommended mineral N fertilizer rate. Background: Blackgram is an important pulse crop grown in India. The creation of new variability through hybridization or mutation breeding will produce novel segregants for important yield attributing traits. The selection from the population will be effective if the traits have good genetic variability estimates. Methods: The present investigation was conducted on analysing genetic variability parameters in F2 populations of the blackgram crosses CO 5 × VBN 9 and CO 6 × VBN 11 which were evaluated during rabi, 2022. Result: Based on the coefficient of variations, it was found that sufficient amount of genetic variability and high to moderate heritability with high genetic advance were present in the populations for the traits viz., plant height, number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per cluster, number of pods per plant and seed yield per plant indicates the presence of additive gene action which can be improved by simple selection in the earlier generations. The positive skewness was observed for the traits viz., number of branches per plant, number of pods per cluster, number of pods per plant, hundred seed weight and seed yield per plant in F2 population of CO 5 × VBN 9 and number of clusters per plant, number of pods per cluster, number of pods per plant and seed yield per plant in the F2 population of CO 6 × VBN 11. The above traits could be improved by intensive selection for rapid improvement. The leptokurtic nature of the distribution for the trait hundred seed weight in CO 5 × VBN 9 population and the traits viz., number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod and seed yield per plant in CO 6 × VBN 11 population indicates that these traits are controlled by few minor genes.
