Summary: Monitoring and localizing molecules on living plants is critical for understanding their growth, development and disease. However, current techniques for molecular imaging of living plants often lack spatial information or require tedious pre‐labelling. Here, we proposed a novel molecular imaging platform that combines sliver nanowire‐doped Ti3C2 MXene (Ag NWs@MXene) flexible film substrate with laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (AMF‐LDI‐MSI) to study the spatial distribution of biomolecules on the surface of living plants. This platform overcomes the MSI challenges posed by difficult‐to‐slice plant tissues (e.g., tough or water‐rich roots and fragile flowers) and enables precisely transfer and visualize the molecule. Comparisons of the measurement results to those from matrix‐assisted LDI‐MSI (MALDI‐MSI) technology demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the platform. Biocompatibility evaluations indicated that the platform without observable adverse effects on the health of living plants. The distribution of growth and disease‐associated signalling molecules, such as choline, organic acids and carbohydrates, can be in situ non‐destructively detected on the surfaces of living plants, which is important for tracking the health of plants and their diseased areas. AMF‐LDI‐MSI platform can serve as a promising tool for label‐free, in situ and non‐destructive monitoring of functional biomolecules and plant growth from a spatial perspective. Nanoplastics have become a growing concern due to their potential impact on freshwater vegetation. The uptake, translocation, and effects of 0.05-µm nanoplastics on Myriophyllum sp. "Roraima" were investigated, along with the role of aerenchyma in nanoplastic transport. Microscopic observations revealed nanoplastic particle adsorption to the plant surface and entry into the roots and stems, with higher abundance and more dispersed distribution by direct contact. Nanoplastic particles were detected in the plant stem, primarily concentrated in regions adjacent to the aerenchyma. No morphological effects were observed. Induced changes in photosynthesis, including increased maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), decreased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), decreased photosynthetic pigments, and increased photoprotective pigments, were recognized. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide levels and antioxidant enzyme activities varied in response to nanoplastic exposure. This study provides insights into the impact of nanoplastics on Myriophyllum sp. "Roraima" and has reviewed the underlying mechanisms, highlighting the role of aerenchyma in nanoplastic transport within the plant. Moreover, this study contributes to the understanding of the potential impacts of nanoplastic pollution on freshwater macrophytes while acknowledging the influence of phyto-anatomical structure on nanoplastic translocation. The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in the defense of Triticum aestivum L. (common wheat) against the rust fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici Erikss. and Henn. (Pgt) was studied using the example of the interaction between the resistant line of the cultivar Thatcher carrying the Sr25 gene from the tall wheatgrass Thinopyrum ponticum (TcSr25) and the susceptible cultivar Saratovskaya 29 (C29). The seedlings were treated with salicylic acid (SA) as an ROS inducer, verapamil as a Ca2+ channel inhibitor, sodium nitroprusside (NP) as a NO donor, and 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide (c-PTIO) as NO scavenger. Isolates with reaction 0 (immunity) and 1 (resistance with hypersensitive reaction, HR) were used to infect the seedlings. NO stimulated the growing tube orientation and the formation of the Pgt appressoria on the surface of resistant plants, as well as increased colony growth in susceptible plants if plants were treated one day before or simultaneously with infection. The generation of superoxide anion was the main cause of Pgt appressoria death on the stomata of resistant plants, while NO did not affect tissue penetration. ROS induced HR and accelerated the destruction of the cell cytoplasm, and NO contributed to the expansion of the necrosis zone in resistant plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: Land plants have evolved a hydrophobic cuticle on the surface of aerial organs as an adaptation to ensure survival in terrestrial environments. Cuticle is mainly composed of lipids, namely cutin and intracuticular wax, with epicuticular wax deposited on plant surface. The composition and permeability of cuticle have a large influence on its ability to protect plants against drought stress. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying cuticular wax biosynthesis in response to drought stress have not been fully elucidated. Here, we identified three AP2/ERF transcription factors (DREB26/ERF12, ERF13 and ERF14) involved in the regulation of water permeability of the plant surface. Transmission electron microscopy revealed thicker cuticle on the leaves of DREB26‐overexpressing (DREB26OX) plants, and thinner cuticle on the leaves of transgenic plants expressing SRDX repression domain‐fused DREB26 (DREB26SR). Genes involved in cuticular wax formation were upregulated in DREB26OX and downregulated in DREB26SR. The levels of very‐long chain (VLC) alkanes, which are a major wax component, increased in DREB26OX leaves and decreased in DREB26SR leaves. Under dehydration stress, water loss was reduced in DREB26OX and increased in DREB26SR. The erf12/13/14 triple mutant showed delayed growth, decreased leaf water content, and reduced drought‐inducible VLC alkane accumulation. Taken together, our results indicate that the DREB26/ERF12 and its closed family members, ERF13 and ERF14, play an important role in cuticular wax biosynthesis in response to drought stress. The complex transcriptional cascade involved in the regulation of cuticular wax biosynthesis under drought stress conditions is discussed. Methods used to quantify evapotranspiration (ET) from Sphagnum‐dominated peatlands often assume that soil moisture is not a limiting factor; actual ET (AET) equals potential ET (PET). However, soil moisture can become limiting as peatlands dry, lowering AET below PET and necessitating the use of a surface resistance term in AET estimations. Quantifying and calculating surface resistance is a challenge for the non‐vascular plant surfaces such as those dominated by Sphagnum moss. This paper explores and quantifies the ecohydrological processes that drive Sphagnum resistance to ET. It is hypothesized that a relationship exists between the Sphagnum moss resistance and the ratio of unsaturated to saturated hydraulic conductivity (K‐ratio) for boreal peatlands, where the K‐ratio is a proxy for the hydrophysical properties of the porous medium. An empirical relationship between Sphagnum moss resistance and the K‐ratio was developed from data collected from a boreal peatland and implemented in the cold regions hydrological model. Empirically modelled resistance values (0–800 s m−1) did not match well with estimates from inverting observations and the Penman–Monteith (PM) algorithm (0–5000 s m−1). Difficulties in validating resistance values were possibly due to lack of moisture limiting conditions although this is seemingly contradicted by the alpha value being less than 1. Priestley–Taylor (PT) and PM algorithms in CRHM were used to estimate AET and compared with each other and with observations from an onsite eddy covariance (EC) system. The PT algorithm, using a site‐specific alpha value (0.75) performed the best with a mean difference of 9.4% (±12.0%) when compared to EC measurements of AET. The PM algorithm consistently overestimated EC measurements with a mean difference of 68.4% (±50.0%), even with a moss resistance incorporated into its use. The performance of PM algorithm is impeded by the uncertainty in quantifying Sphagnum resistance. Reducing this uncertainty should be a focus of future studies, as it does not require the use of a site‐specific alpha value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phyllosphere (aerial plant surfaces colonized by microorganisms) remains an understudied ecosystem in terms of bacterial biogeography, particularly at intermediate or local spatial scales. This study characterized the phyllosphere bacterial community on the leaves of 87 Magnolia grandiflora trees sampled throughout a small town, encompassing an area of approximately 60 km2. Sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene revealed the dominant bacterial phyla to be Alphaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Acidobacteria, consistent with other studies of the phyllosphere. There was a small but significant relationship between the phyllosphere community similarity and the distance between the trees (i.e., trees further apart were more likely to have dissimilar bacterial communities). There was also a relationship between the assigned categories of tree height (low, medium, high) and the phyllosphere bacterial community composition, with the trees in the high category having more diverse bacterial communities on their leaves than the shorter trees. This study provides insight into the relationship between phyllosphere community composition and host tree characteristics and shows that the distance between M. grandiflora trees has a significant, albeit low, influence on bacterial composition. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of phyllosphere microbiome biogeography, highlighting how individual tree characteristics and spatial proximity shape phyllosphere bacterial communities. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , the causal agent of white mould, is a necrotrophic fungal pathogen responsible for extensive crop loss. Current control options rely heavily on the application of chemical fungicides that are becoming less effective and may lead to the development of fungal resistance. In the current study, we used a foliar application of boron to protect Brassica napus (canola) from S. sclerotiorum infection using whole-plant infection assays. Application of boron to aerial surfaces of the canola plant reduced the number of S. sclerotiorum -forming lesions by 87 % compared to an untreated control. Dual RNA sequencing revealed the effect of boron on both the host plant and fungal pathogen during the infection process. Differential gene expression analysis and gene ontology term enrichment further revealed the mode of action of a foliar boron spray at the mRNA level. A single foliar application of boron primed the plant defence response through the induction of genes associated with systemic acquired resistance while an application of boron followed by S. sclerotiorum infection-induced genes associated with defence response-related cellular signalling cascades. Additionally, in S. sclerotiorum inoculated on boron-treated B. napus , we uncovered gene activity in response to salicylic acid breakdown, consistent with salicylic acid-dependent systemic acquired resistance induction within the host plant. Taken together, this study demonstrates that a foliar application of boron results in priming of the B. napus plant defence response, likely through systemic acquired resistance, thereby contributing to increased tolerance to S. sclerotiorum infection. Plant extracts represent abundant sources of biomolecules distributed throughout various plant parts. These biomolecules are extracted using diverse solvents and methods. Within these plant extracts lie bioactive compounds, known for their antioxidant properties and anticorrosive capabilities. Detecting and isolating these active biomolecules from plant extracts necessitates analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The active biomolecules within plant extracts contain heteroatoms within their structures, facilitating their adsorption on steel surfaces and conferring corrosion inhibition properties. The advantages of plant extracts as green corrosion inhibitors include ready availability, ease of application, eco-friendly characteristics, and cost-effectiveness. These extracts adhere to steel surfaces, blocking their active sites and effectively reducing the corrosion rate. This review consolidates the findings on the corrosion inhibition potential of plant extracts from various plant parts, elucidating their performance in different concentrations of sulfuric acid. The shortage of superior grade wood fibers is a prime problem faced by Indian pulp and paper industries. As a result, the pulp and paper industry find it difficult to withstand the competition in the market, which had grown extremely competitive. In order to increase the utilization of non-wood fibers resources in the production of high quality eco-friendly papers, dhaincha, a non-wood fiber resource has potential industrial application. In this research, pulp and paper were developed from Sesbania aculeata stem using kraft pulping followed by bleaching. Optimization of conditions for pulping was carried out by Response Surface Methodology. The relationship between three variables and three responses were studied using Box–Behnken experimental design. The developed pulp was evaluated for kappa number, brightness index, viscosity, FTIR and TGA. Then paper was developed by using optimized pulp and evaluated for physical properties. The statistical analysis (ANOVA) was carried out in order to establish the relationship between the concentration of NaOH, Na2S, treatment time and temperature with kappa number, brightness index and viscosity. Submerged aquatic plants have potential applications in the phytoremediation of aquatic environments contaminated with arsenic (As). However, the role of epiphytic bacteria that grow on the surface of plants in As uptake and metabolism in plants has often been overlooked. An orthogonal experimental design with nine treatments, four factors, and three levels was conducted to inspect the effects of nitrogen (N, KNO3, 2, 4, 10 mg/L), phosphorus (P, NaH2PO4·2H2O, 0.02, 0.2, 1 mg/L), pH (6, 7, 9), and arsenate (As(V), Na3AsO4·12H2O, 15, 75, 375 μg/L) on As accumulation and biotransformation in sterilized plants and to further explore the role of epiphytic bacteria in the metabolism of As by Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle. The results indicate that low N, intermediate P, and intermediate pH were beneficial for As accumulation (117.2 ± 62.2 μg/g DW) in sterilized plants, and epiphytic bacteria exhibited promotion (68%) in plants. High N promoted As absorption and transformation in non-sterilized plants but reduced As absorption in sterilized plants. Epiphytic bacteria in the medium showed significant As(III) oxidation, which was affected by environmental factors. Cancer is a major disease that affects millions of people around the world every year. It affects individuals of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Since drugs used to treat cancer cannot distinguish between cancerous and healthy cells, they cause systemic toxicity along with serious side effects. Recently, controlled drug-release systems have been developed to reduce the side effects caused by anticancer drugs used for treatment. Morin is an anticancer drug with a flavonol structure. It has been extensively researched for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, and antibacterial properties, especially found in Chinese herbs and fruits, and its multiple positive effects on different diseases. In this study, a nanocomposite with magnetic properties was synthesized by coating biocompatible activated carbon obtained using the fruits of the Celtis tournefortii plant on the surface of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles. Characterization of the synthesized activated carbon-coated iron oxide magnetic nanocomposite was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The cytotoxic effects of the drug-loaded magnetic nanocomposite were examined in HT-29 (colorectal), T98-G (glioblastoma) cancer cell lines, and human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) healthy cell line. The morin loading and release behavior of the activated carbon-coated iron oxide magnetic nanocomposite were studied, and the results showed that up to 60% of the adsorbed morin was released within 4 h. Background: The importance of oral hygiene maintenance is of prime importance in dentulous and edentulous individuals. There are numerous types of bacteria which colonise in the oral cavity. Completely edentulous individuals have to follow proper hygiene procedures to keep their dentures germ free which can prevent numerous oral conditions. The main aim of this text was to briefly understand the interaction between microorganisms and denture, discuss the various methods of preventing plaque formation on dentures and highlight the natural antimicrobial agents in detail. Main body: There are numerous factors which play a role in biofilm formation. Methods such as patient education, maintenance of denture hygiene and use of pharmacological methods have proven to effectively reduce or prevent the growth of microorganisms. Pharmacological agents can broadly be classified into natural and synthetic based on their source of origin. Based on their mechanism of action, they are classified as biocides, biocide releasing polymers and surface acting agents. The use of natural v/s synthetic products has always seen positives and negatives. Apart from the antimicrobial activity, the influence of these agents on the mechanical properties also remains an important aspect. This text highlights the various natural antimicrobial agents that can be incorporated in the dentures and the effect they have on the mechanical properties of the dentures. Conclusion: The interaction between microorganisms and denture has been explored in detail. The various natural and synthetic antimicrobial agents have been enlisted following which the natural antimicrobials have been discussed in detail. Larvae of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) wriggle vigorously backward when physically stimulated. To explore whether this behavior is effective against ant attacks on their host plants with three-dimensional structures, we experimentally observed DBM larval movements and consequences thereof when attacked by Formica japonica (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) ants on the upper and lower surfaces of host plant leaves. On the upper surfaces of leaves, DBM larvae wriggled backward in response to ant attacks, and most larvae hung from leaf edges by spinning silk threads. On the lower surfaces of leaves, DBM larvae did not wriggle backward but immediately hung from the lower surface in response to attacks. No ants were able to pursue hanging larvae. We conclude that wriggling backward by DBM larvae belongs to a sequence of evasive movements against ant attacks on upper leaf surfaces. To our knowledge, this is the first report of combined wriggling and hanging behaviors by Lepidopteran larvae that are effective against ants in three-dimensional habitats. Vegetation provides direct information to interpret the environment, ecology, climate and deposit of a site. The identification of the surrounding vegetation from root marks recorded on the surface of skeletal elements is a new source of information of special interest. This article is a preliminary approach to relate root marking (i.e. taphonomic effect) recorded on bone surfaces caused by plants (i.e. taphonomic agent) through an experimental model. Distinguishing the root marks of one type of plant from marks produced by any other type of plant is an investigation that has been neglected in taphonomy. The preliminary results described here represent the starting point of this research field. This is an experimental work that is currently in progress, and further studies will include higher sample sizes and the analysis of different specimens in contact with other plants such as shrubs and trees. Our preliminary results shown here come from three different root plant types (underground, subaerial and aquatic) displaying characteristic differences that reinforce the need of extending this research and the importance of the analysis of this taphonomic modification. Two new genera and one new species of Tegonotini (Acari: Eriophyoidea) from China are described and illustrated. They are Multispinacarus dimocarpigen. nov. & sp. nov. infesting Dimocarpus longan Lour. (Sapindaceae), Alvetegonotus calleryagen. nov. & sp. nov. infesting Callerya tsui (F. P. Metcalf) Z. Wei & Pedley. (Fabaceae), and Shevtchenkella sterculiaesp. nov. infesting Sterculia euosma W. W. Smith. (Malvaceae). These new species were found to be vagrants on the lower leaf surface of their associated plants, albeit with no apparent damage observed. Benefiting from the rapid development of environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies, sedimentary DNA (sedDNA) emerges as a promising tool for monitoring plant compositions in remote regions. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), renowned for its harsh environment and numerous ponds and lakes, presents a potentially demanding region for the application of sedDNA on vegetation investigations. Here, we used the g and h universal primers for the P6 loop region of the chloroplast trnL (UAA) intron to amplify plant DNA in surface sediments from 59 ponds and small lakes on the southwestern TP. The applicability and limitations of using plant DNA metabarcoding for modern vegetation monitoring and palaeo-vegetation reconstructions have been assessed by comparing sedDNA, pollen, and vegetation survey data. Our results showed that plant DNA metabarcoding recorded 186 terrestrial taxa, of which 30.1% can be identified at the species level. The plant sedDNA approach can effectively disclose the dominant plant taxa (including Asteraceae, Cyperaceae and Poaceae) and significant vegetation assemblages in the vicinity of the investigated sites. The number of taxa and taxonomic resolution of plant sedDNA exceeded that of pollen analysis (75 taxa detected, 5.3% can be identified at species level). Unlike pollen that retains a broad spectrum of regional plant signals (including Pinus and Artemisia), plant sedDNA mirrors very local plants, underscoring its utility in local vegetation monitoring and reconstructions. Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of chemicals present in a wide range of commercial and consumer products due to their water‐repellency, nonstick, or surfactant properties, resulting from their chemical and thermal stability. This stability, however, often leads to persistence in the environment when they are inevitability released. We utilized microbial microcosms from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludge to determine how employing different functional groups such as heteroatom linkages, varying chain lengths, and hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) will impact the ultimate fate of these novel PFAS structures. A suite of five novel fluorosurfactant building blocks (F7C3OCHFCF2SCH2CH2OH (FESOH), F3COCHFCF2SCH2CH2OH (MeFESOH), F7C3OCHFCF2OCH2CH2OH (ProFdiEOH), F7C3OCHFCF2CH2OH (ProFEOH), and F3COCHFCF2OCH2CH2OH (MeFdiEOH)) and their select transformation products, were incubated in WWTP aerobic microcosms to determine structure–activity relationships. The HFE alcohol congeners with a thioether (FESOH and MeFESOH) were observed to transform faster than the ether congeners, while also producing second‐generation HFE acid products (F7C3OCHFC(O)OH (2H‐3:2 polyfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acid [PFECA]) and F3COCHFC(O)OH (2H‐1:2 PFECA). Subsequent biodegradation experiments with 2H‐1:2 PFESA and 2H‐1:2 PFECA displayed no further transformation over 74 days. Surface water Photofate experiments compared 2H‐1:2 PFECA, and 2H‐1:2 polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (PFESA) with their fully fluorinated ether acid counterparts, and demonstrated the potential for both HFE acid species to completely mineralize over extended periods of time, a fate that highlights the value of studying novel PFAS functionalization. Pesticide-free agricultural strategies need new tools for disease prevention. Better than early detection of disease, detection of conditions favorable to their appearance can be a progress. In the case of fungal diseases, the presence of water on the plant surface is necessary. In order to detect remotely this presence early and at the scale of a crop field, we propose a low-cost solution based on laser reflection. Here, experimental results in a controlled environment are presented on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic leaves (rapeseed Brassica Napus and grapevine Vitis Vinifera, respectively). We first assess the water detection on a leaf surface by recreating the dew formation process. We next evaluate the influence of the scanning measurement and leaf inclination on the detection to get closer to in-field conditions. Results show that this method is very sensitive on both types of leaves. Water detection is possible from a low surface coverage with a high temporal precision at 1 m. In the hydrophobic case, water on a leaf surface leads to an increase of the detected signal up to three times compared to a dry leaf. The corresponding minimum surface coverage detectable at 1 m is evaluated at 1.6% thanks to 2D ray-tracing numerical simulations. In the hydrophilic case, on the contrary, water on a leaf surface leads to a decrease of the detected signal by almost half. Drought has a significant, negative impact on crop production; and these effects are poised to increase with climate change. Plants acclimate to drought and water stress through diverse physiological responses, primarily mediated by the hormone abscisic acid (ABA). Because plants lose the majority of their water through stomatal pores on aerial surfaces of plants, stomatal closure is one of the rapid responses mediated by ABA to reduce transpirational water loss. The dynamic changes in the transcriptome of stomatal guard cells in response to ABA have been investigated in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. However, guard cell transcriptomes have not been analyzed in agronomically valuable crops such as a major oilseed crop, rapeseed. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of ABA-regulated transcriptomes in stomatal guard cells of Brassica napus and conducted comparison analysis with the transcriptomes of A. thaliana. We discovered changes in gene expression indicating alterations in a host of physiological processes, including stomatal movement, metabolic reprogramming, and light responses. Our results suggest the existence of both immediate and delayed responses to ABA in Brassica guard cells. Furthermore, the transcription factors and regulatory networks mediating these responses are compared to those identified in Arabidopsis. Our results imply the continuing evolution of ABA responses in Brassica since its divergence from a common ancestor, involving both protein-coding and non-coding nucleotide sequences. Kockovaella, in the family Cuniculitremaceae of the order Tremellales, is a globally distributed genus of blastoconidia-forming fungi. Currently, 23 species have been described and accepted as members of the genus. In this study, five yeast strains were isolated from plant leaf surfaces collected in the Fujian and Guizhou Provinces of China and identified through a combination of morphological and molecular methods. The related phenotypic features and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ITS, LSU, and RPB1 sequences demonstrated that they were members of three novel Kockovaella species: K. iteae sp. nov., K. quanzhouensis sp. nov., and K. sambucuse sp. nov. These species were described in detail and discussed relative to other species. This study demonstrated the novel geographical distribution as well as the high species diversity of Kockovaella in China and offered more data for further studies in fungal systematics and evolution. Drought is an environmental stress that can negatively influence growth and productivity of fruit trees because it decreases the photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance and raises the rate of water loss from the plant surfaces. Therefore, this study investigated the soil application of biochar individually or in combination with the spraying of boron, silicon, and molybdenum relative to the growth attributes, fruit drop percentages, yield, and fruit quality of Le Conte pear trees grown under drought stress. The trees were fertilized by biochar at 0, 1, and 2 kg per tree individually or in combination with the foliar spraying with 0 mg B2O3 + 0 mg SiO2 + 0 mg MoO2, 10 mg B2O3 + 25 mg SiO2 + 25 mg MoO2, 20 mg B2O3 + 50 mg SiO2 + 50 mg MoO2 and 30 mg B2O3 + 75 mg SiO2 + 75 mg MoO2 at start of February, start of March and start of April, compared to untreated trees (control). The results showed that the soil addition of biochar or spraying of nano fertilizers individually or in combinations improved the vegetive growth, productivity and fruit quality, and leaf mineral content, meanwhile they reduced the fruit drop. The best results were obtained by the application of 2 kg biochar combined with 30 mg B2O3 + 75 mg SiO2 + 75 mg MoO2, which was superior to other applied treatments in the two seasons. Estimating foliar dust (FD) is essential in understanding the complex interaction between FD, vegetation, and the environment. The elevated FD has a significant impacts on vegetation physiological processes. The present study aims to explore the potential of multi‐sensor optical satellite data sets (e.g., Landsat‐8, 9; Sentinel‐2B, and PlanetScope) in conjunction with in situ data sets for FD estimation over the Jharsuguda coal mining region in Eastern India. The efficacy of different spectral bands and various radiometric indices (RIs) was tested using linear regression models for FD estimation. Furthermore, the study attempts to quantify the impacts of FD on vegetation's physiological processes (e.g., carbon uptake, transpiration, water use efficiency, leaf temperature) through proxy data sets. The key findings of the study uncovered sensor‐specific and common trends in vegetation spectral profiles under varying FD concentrations. A saturation threshold was observed around 50 g/m2 of FD concentration, beyond which additional FD concentration exhibited limited impact on spectral reflectance. On the other hand, the assessment of FD estimation models revealed distinct performances and shared trends across various satellite sensors. Notably, near‐infrared and shortwave infrared‐1 bands, along with certain RIs, such as the Global Environmental Monitoring Index and the Non‐Linear Index, emerged as pivotal for accurate FD estimation. Besides, the study results revealed that vegetation‐associated carbon uptake experienced a ∼2 to 3 gC reduction for every additional gram of FD per square meter. Moreover, the vegetation transpiration reduction per unit of FD ranged from approximately 0.0005 to 0.0006 mm/m2/day, highlighting a moderate impact on transpiration levels. These findings aid a significant evidence base to our understanding of FD's impact on vegetation physiological processes. Microswimmers are single-celled bodies powered by flagella. Typical examples are zoospores, dispersal agents of oomycete plant pathogens that are used to track down hosts and infect. Being motile, zoospores presumably identify infection sites using chemical cues such as sugars, alcohols and amino acids. With high-speed cameras we traced swimming trajectories of Phytophthora zoospores over time and quantified key trajectory parameters to investigate chemotactic responses. Zoospores adapt their native run-and-tumble swimming patterns in response to the amino acid glutamic acid by increasing the rate at which they turn. Simulations predict that tuneable tumble frequencies are sufficient to explain zoospore aggregation, implying positive klinokinesis. Zoospores thus exploit a retention strategy to remain at the plant surface once arriving there. Interference of G-protein mediated signalling affects swimming behaviour. Zoospores of a Phytophthora infestans G⍺-deficient mutant show higher tumbling frequencies but still respond and adapt to glutamic acid, suggesting chemoreception to be intact. Author summary: Oomycetes of the genus Phytophthora are devastating plant pathogens that have enormous impact on world food production. Unlike most of the morphologically similar Fungi, Phytophthora species make use of motile dispersal agents called zoospores. Although it is known that zoospores end up at specific parts of the plant, it is unknown in what manner their motility contributes to this result. A better understanding of how zoospores respond to environmental signals, for example to exudates deriving from plants, will open novel avenues to combat the diseases caused by Phytophthora. We exploited an imaging system that allows us to directly monitor zoospore trajectories and have used this to observe and quantify changes in zoospore behaviour in response to a plant-exuded compound. Doing so, we found that zoospores have access to a particular type of aggregation strategy which they use to target the plant. Crop monitoring with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has the potential to reduce field monitoring costs while increasing monitoring frequency and improving efficiency. However, the utilization of RGB-based UAV imagery for crop-specific monitoring, especially for sugarcane, remains limited. This work proposes a UAV platform with an RGB camera as a low-cost solution to monitor sugarcane fields, complementing the commonly used multi-spectral methods. This new approach optimizes the RGB vegetation indices for accurate prediction of sugarcane growth, providing many improvements in scalable crop-management methods. The images were captured by a DJI Mavic Pro drone. Four RGB vegetation indices (VIs) (GLI, VARI, GRVI, and MGRVI) and the crop surface model plant height (CSM_PH) were derived from the images. The fractional vegetation cover (FVC) values were compared by image classification. Sugarcane plant height predictions were generated using two machine learning (ML) algorithms—multiple linear regression (MLR) and random forest (RF)—which were compared across five predictor combinations (CSM_PH and four VIs). At the early stage, all VIs showed significantly lower values than later stages (p < 0.05), indicating an initial slow progression of crop growth. MGRVI achieved a classification accuracy of over 94% across all growth phases, outperforming traditional indices. Based on the feature rankings, VARI was the least sensitive parameter, showing the lowest correlation (r < 0.5) and mutual information (MI < 0.4). The results showed that the RF and MLR models provided better predictions for plant height. The best estimation results were observed withthe combination of CSM_PH and GLI utilizing RF model (R2 = 0.90, RMSE = 0.37 m, MAE = 0.27 m, and AIC = 21.93). Simple Summary: Adherence to smooth substrates is closely related to the morphology and distribution of adhesive structures on insects' legs, so it is hypothesized that the adhesive structures have been evolved as an adaption to smooth substrates in specific environments. Using scanning electron microscopy, we compared the microstructure of the tarsi of five tiger beetle species, both male and female, belonging to two tribes living in arboreal and non-arboreal environments. We found that the different types of adhesive setae, including elongated spoon-like setae, elliptical setae, branched setae, filament-like setae, discoidal setae, spatulate setae and tapered setae, varied in different environments and genders. The adaptive evolution of these adhesive structures was probably driven by the selective pressures of both mating behavior and the presence of smooth substrates in the respective environments. The ability of many insects to adhere vertically or even upside down to smooth substrates is closely related to the morphology and distribution of the adhesive structures on their legs. During locomotion, the legs are in direct contact with different substrates, and it is hypothesized that the adhesive structures have been evolved as an adaption to smooth substrates in specific environments. To investigate whether there is a relationship between the presence of adhesive structures and the combined effects of different environments and mating behavior, we compared five species of tiger beetles belonging to two tribes living in arboreal and non-arboreal environments, respectively. In three non-arboreal species, we found a specific type of adhesive structure consisting of elongated spoon-like setae present on the protarsi of males but absent on the male meso- and metatarsi and on females. In Tricondyla pulchripes, an arboreal species living on stems, we found three types of adhesive setae on male protarsi, while only two types of setae were found on male meso- and metatarsi and on females. In Neocollyris linearis, an arboreal species living on leaves, we found three types of adhesive setae on male pro-, meso- and meta-tarsi but only two types of adhesive setae on females. The adaptive evolution of these adhesive structures was probably driven by the selective pressures of both mating behavior and the presence of smooth substrates in the respective environments. Trichomes, which are special structures on the surfaces of plants, play an important role in plant defense. Trichomes in tomatoes are composed of multiple cells that are divided into glandular and non-glandular trichomes. Glandular trichomes can secrete a diverse array of specialized metabolites and terpenes are the main types. Previous studies have shown that JA and TOR signaling are associated with trichomes, and there may be an interaction between these, but the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, JA signaling and its key transcription factor SlMYC1 were shown to regulate the transcript levels of terpene synthesis precursor-related genes (MEP/MVA pathways). SlTOR positively regulated the formation of type VI trichomes through GC-MS, qRT-PCR, and transient transgenic assays, and the synthesis and accumulation of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were positively regulated through the expression of key genes for terpene synthesis. Subsequently, SlTOR was the direct target of SlMYC1 by yeast one-hybrid, GUS, and transient expression assays. Collectively, this study revealed that tomato trichomes were regulated by SlTOR, and SlMYC1 mediated the growth and development of trichomes and the synthesis of terpenes by directly binding the promoter of SlTOR to activate its expression. In semi-arid southern Kenya, climate change is putting rainfed agriculture at risk with major implications for food security. The zai pit, a Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) technique, has proven to enhance yields in arid regions, but its labor demands have limited adoption rates. This study assessed how the zai pit depth and manure application within zai pits influenced maize (Zea mays) success (i.e., growth, development, and productivity). Three zai pit treatments were prepared at the Wildlife Works Research Center in southeastern Kenya: (1) deep (50 cm) with manure; (2) shallow (25 cm) with manure; and (3) deep (50 cm) without manure, and all were compared to a non-zai pit control (surface planting). Maize growth/development (e.g., height, stage, roots) and productivity (e.g., yield) measurements were taken over two growing periods. For most measures, shallow zai pits performed equally as well as deep zai pits, with both performing better than the control. Zai pits without manure performed significantly worse than zai pits with manure, oftentimes not differing from the control. Results suggest that maize success is influenced more by manure than the depth of the pit. Drought, one of the major ecological limiting factors, has a significant effect on the growth and secondary metabolic process of medicinal plants. Water stress reduces the size, density, leaf surface of the plant and reduces the biomass, and not only changes the plant structurally, but also leads to fluctuations in their secondary chemical compounds. The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of using brassinolides and surfactant on drought stress tolerance on Sarkhargol medicinal plant at Islamic Azad University of Mahabad during 2017 - 2018. The studied factors include dryness at three irrigation levels of 70, 120 and 170 mm, evaporation from class A pan as the main factor, surfactant consumption at two levels (0 and 0.5 lit/ha) and 24-epibrassinolide at three levels (0, 0.01 and 0.1 μmol) were as secondary factors. According to the results of the present study, drought stress had a decisive role in reducing soluble sugars, relative water content, phosphorus element, plant height, amchlorid and yield components of Echinacea medicinal plant, as well as the main effects of brassinolide, surfactant solution and drought stress according to the content of soluble sugars, proline, glycine betaine, amino acids, lysine and methionine. They had due to the limitation of water resources, irrigation after 120 mm, use of brassinolide and surfactant can have a positive role in removing the damages of drought stress. In addition, brassinolide and surfactant led to increased tolerance to drought stress in Sarhargol medicinal plant, which led to relative resistance to drought and stability of the yield of dry matter of the plant and its essential oil. Wheat exhibits complex characteristics during its growth, such as extensive tillering, slender and soft leaves, and severe organ cross-obscuration, posing a considerable challenge in full-cycle phenotypic monitoring. To address this, this study presents a synthesized method based on SFM-MVS (Structure-from- Motion, Multi-View Stereo) processing for handling and segmenting wheat point clouds, covering the entire growth cycle from seedling to grain filling stages. First, a multi-view image acquisition platform was constructed to capture image sequences of wheat plants, and dense point clouds were generated using SFM-MVS technology. High-quality dense point clouds were produced by implementing improved Euclidean clustering combined with centroids, color filtering, and statistical filtering methods. Subsequently, the segmentation of wheat plant stems and leaves was performed using the region growth segmentation algorithm. Although segmentation performance was suboptimal during the tillering, jointing, and booting stages due to the glut leaves and severe overlap, there was a salient improvement in wheat leaf segmentation efficiency over the entire growth cycle. Finally, phenotypic parameters were analyzed across different growth stages, comparing automated measurements of plant height, leaf length, and leaf width with actual measurements. The results demonstrated coefficients of determination (R²) of 0.9979, 0.9977, and 0.995; root mean square errors (RMSE) of 1.0773 cm, 0.2612 cm, and 0.0335 cm; and relative root mean square errors (RRMSE) of 2.1858%, 1.7483%, and 2.8462%, respectively. These results validate the reliability and accuracy of our proposed workflow in processing wheat point clouds and automatically extracting plant height, leaf length, and leaf width, indicating that our 3D reconstructed wheat model achieves high precision and can quickly, accurately, and non-destructively extract phenotypic parameters. Additionally, plant height, convex hull volume, plant surface area, and Crown area were extracted, providing a detailed analysis of dynamic changes in wheat throughout its growth cycle. ANOVA was conducted across different cultivars, accurately revealing significant differences at various growth stages. This study aimed to compare the impact of iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium and an iodosulfuron-based herbicidal ionic liquid (HIL) on the microbiomes constituting the epiphytes and endophytes of cornflower (Centaurea cyanus L.). The experiment involved biotypes of cornflower susceptible and resistant to acetolactate synthase inhibition, examining potential bacterial involvement in sulfonylurea herbicide detoxification. We focused on microbial communities present on the surface and in the plant tissues of roots and shoots. The research included the synthesis and physicochemical analysis of a novel HIL, evaluation of shifts in bacterial community composition, analysis of the presence of catabolic genes associated with sulfonylurea herbicide degradation and determination of their abundance in all experimental variants. Overall, for the susceptible biotype, the biodiversity of the root microbiome was higher compared to shoot microbiome; however, both decreased notably after herbicide or HIL applications. To explore the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrient gradients on morphological characteristics and biomass of fine root (≤2 mm) of plant surface layer (0-10 cm) in new coastal reclamation areas, Ligustrum lucidum was used as the test material and the fertilization method of ingrown soil cores (volume 196.25 cm³) was used to conduct nitrogen and phosphorus addition experiments on the soil core of the soil surface layer (0-10 cm) of L. lucidum. Suppose the fertilization gradient was 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20 g per hole. The effects of N and P nutrients on the functional traits of fine roots in the soil surface were studied. The results were as follows: (1) Compared with the control, when 3 g N was applied, the length, surface area, volume, root length density, root surface area density, and biomass of fine roots increased significantly, with the increases of 62.39%, 120.87%, 169.97%, 59.19%, 106.99% and 102.75%, respectively; when 5-11 g N was applied, the above indicators gradually decreased. When the amount of N was applied greater than 11 g, no root grew. (2) When 3 g P was applied, the total length, surface area, volume, root length density, root surface area density and biomass of the root system significantly increased, with the increases of 77.37%, 111.15%, 147.50%, 73.87%, 97.88% and 98.05%. When the amount of P was applied greater than 5 g, the above indicators of fine roots gradually decreased, but there was no rootless situation. Fertilization caused significant changes in the morphological indicators and biomass of fine roots, and plants improved the ability to acquire soil nutrients by changing the structure of fine roots. In pulse crops, synchronized flowering altered the source-sink relationship due to the rapid translocation of nutrients from leaves to the developing pods. Additional nutrition through foliar feeding plays a vital role in pulse production by stimulating root development, nodulation, energy transformation, various metabolic processes and increasing pod setting, thereby increasing the yield. Many researchers are trying to reduce transpiration losses, flower shedding and maximizing productivity, foliar application of nutrient formulations and growth regulators in pulses. Thus, the foliar application of macro and micronutrients and growth regulators is considered an efficient and economical method of supplementing part of the nutrient requirements and moisture stress tolerance at critical stages. The PPFM (Pink pigmented facultative methylobacteria), when used as a foliar spray, it releases osmoprotectants (sugars and alcohols) on the surface of the plants and it increases chlorophyll content, thereby increasing the photosynthetic efficiency and makes drought tolerance ability of plants. This matrix helped to protect the plants from desiccation and high temperatures. Whereas potassium as spray also enhances drought tolerance in plants by mitigating harmful effects by increasing translocation, maintaining water balance and increasing pod filling. Further, salicylic acid is an endogenous growth regulator of phenolic nature, which regulates physiological processes to mitigate stress, acts as a chelate for phosphorous uptake, increases pod setting, flowering and grain yield. The cuticle is a hydrophobic coating of most aerial plant surfaces crucial for limiting non-stomatal water loss. Plant cuticles consist of the lipid polyester cutin and associated waxes with compositions varying widely between plant species and organs. Here, we aimed to provide a comparative analysis of the dark-glossy adaxial and pale-glaucous abaxial sides of Drimys winteri (Winteraceae) leaves. Scanning electron microscopy showed nanotubular wax crystals lining the entire abaxial side of the leaf (including stomatal pores), while the adaxial side had patches of mixed platelet/tubule crystals and smooth areas between them. Consecutive treatments for wax removal and cutin depolymerization revealed that the waxes were deposited on a cutin network with micron-scale cavities across the entire abaxial surface including the stomata pores, and on a microscopically smooth cutin surface on the adaxial side of the leaf. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and flame ionization detection showed that the wax mixtures on both sides of the leaf were complex mixtures of very-long-chain compounds dominated by the secondary alcohol nonacosan-10-ol and alkanediols with one hydroxyl on C-10. It is therefore very likely that the characteristic tubular wax crystals of both leaf sides are formed by these alcohols and diols. Further secondary alcohols and alkanediols, as well as ketols and alkanetriols with one functional group on C-10, were identified based on mass spectral fragmentation patterns. The similarities between all these mid-chain-functionalized compounds suggest that they are derived from nonacosan-10-ol via regio-specific hydroxylation reactions, likely catalyzed by three P450-dependent monooxygenases with different regio-specificities. Mites are among the most abundant invertebrates in subsurface ecosystems, and their community assemblages and distributions are often significantly influenced by the diversity of habitat resources. The cave ecosystem encompasses drastic changes in nonbiological factors, such as changes in lighting conditions from bright to extraordinarily dark and habitat gradients of surface plant resources from abundant to scarce or even disappearing, providing an ideal unique environment for evaluating the assembly mechanism of soil animal communities. Nevertheless, there still needs to be a sufficient understanding of the biodiversity patterns and drivers of mite communities across environmental gradients in karst caves. We conducted a comprehensive survey on the composition and diversity of soil mites in three photometric zones (dark, twilight, and light) of a typical karst cave and its adjoining extractive environments (forest scrub and farmland). Our research aimed to investigate the ecological relationships of mite communities between above‐ and below‐ground habitats and the effects of abiotic factors on mite communities. We collected 49 families, 86 genera, and 1284 mites. In the external cave environment, we captured 1052 mites from 72 genera and 45 families; in the internal cave environment, we captured 232 mites from 46 genera and 29 families. The abundance, richness of genera, and diversity parameters of the mite community decreased from the cave entrance to the cave interior with decreasing light intensity. Oribatid mites dominated the mite community. Protoribates and Scheloribates were the dominant genera, along with Tectocepheus and 11 other genera, which primarily distinguished the mite communities among different habitats. Forty endemic taxa were found in the external cave environment, compared to 14 endemic taxa in the internal cave environment. The mite community showed a strong preference for the cave ecosystem habitat. Temperature, humidity, and soil nitrogen content significantly influenced the distribution pattern of mite communities (VIP > 0.8, p < 0.05). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical treatments are used to remove hydrophilic OH groups and surface particles from the fiber surface for increasing aspect ratio of fibers and subsequently, mechanical properties. In this paper, the effect of two eco‐friendly chemical treatments on morphology, chemical structure, and thermal stability of Agave Americana fibers (AAFs) is investigated. The first chemical treatment of AAF is based on citric acid (C6H8O7) to substitute OH groups contained in AAF by ester groups, while the second one involves sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) to remove the lignin and hemicellulose components with the aim to promote good fiber‐matrix adhesion. Attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR) data shows that both treatments are efficient to remove hemicelluloses and a part of lignin contained in AAF resulting in a rough and clean fiber surface. Urbanization and industrialization have escalated air pollution into a critical global issue, particularly in urban areas. Urban green infrastructures (GIs), such as parks and street trees, play a vital role in mitigating air pollution through dry deposition, the process by which air pollutants are removed by deposition onto plant surfaces or through plant uptake. However, existing studies on the dry-deposition capacity of urban green spaces are limited in their ability to reflect variations at the tree-species level, hindering comprehensive evaluations and effective management strategies. This study aims to quantitatively assess the dry-deposition capacity of the urban green spaces of Beijing and Shanghai for six major air pollutants in using an improved dry-deposition model and tree-species-specific data. Results showed that Shanghai's urban green spaces had a monthly average dry-deposition rate of 5.5 × 10−6 s m−1, slightly higher than Beijing's rate of 5.3 × 10−6 s m−1. Significant seasonal variations were observed, with summer showing the highest deposition rates due to favorable meteorological conditions. Broad-leaved species such as Zelkova serrata in Beijing and Photinia serratifolia in Shanghai exhibited superior dry-deposition capacities compared to coniferous species. Temperature significantly influenced dry-deposition rates for gaseous pollutants, while particulate-matter deposition was primarily affected by pollutant concentrations. This study provides critical insights into the air = purification functions of urban green spaces and underscores the importance of species selection and strategic green-space planning in urban air-quality management, informing the development of optimized urban-greening strategies for improved air quality and public health. In recent years, the rapid development of wireless technologies has led to the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) in various fields. One of the fastest-growing segments of IoT is the "smart" wearables sector. In the next few years, the development of flexible plant-wearable devices that can provide vital information about the physiological characteristics of plants will be essential to support the faster growth of precision agriculture. We propose a small (overall size Ø35 mm × 0.8 mm), ultra-lightweight (0.4 g), and elegant-shaped antenna for unobtrusive integration on a plant surface for application in IoT-based precision agriculture at ISM 2.45 GHz band. The radiating element has a design that resembles a dragonfly, making the antenna visually unnoticeable. We used ZZ Plant leaves as the substrate for the antenna and transparent polymer foil for encapsulating the conductive parts, achieving a highly flexible, waterproof, and chemically resistant antenna for application in harsh environments. The obtained results indicate that the antenna is resilient to changes in substrate relative permittivity up to ±20%. It exhibits high radiation efficiency (between 26% and 40%) and omnidirectional patterns across the ISM 2.45 GHz band. Moreover, the measured results align reasonably well with the simulated ones. Fungi associated with Aspergillus Vine Canker (AVC) infect vigorous new shoots and canes during plant training, entering through wounds. Recently, grapevines exhibiting symptoms resembling AVC have been observed in Mexico. Thus, this study aimed to investigate these diseased plants. Woody samples from symptomatic plants were surface sterilized with alcohol and fire and then placed onto Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium. Seventeen isolates displaying morphology similar to the genus Aspergillus were characterized. Colony and microscopic characteristics were observed on Czapek Yeast Extract Agar (CYA) and Malt Extract Agar (MEA). Phylogenetic analysis using calmodulin (CaM) and β-tubulin (BenA) gene markers, revealed the presence of Aspergillus niger, A. tubingensis, and A. welwitschiae species. Notably, Aspergillus isolates have an optimal growth temperature range of 35–37 °C but some exhibited thermotolerance, growing even at 50 °C. In pathogenicity assays, A. niger A10SMX, A. niger A8SMX, and A. tubingensis A13SMX exhibited the highest virulence in cultivar 'Merlot', resulting in lesions up to 2 cm in length after 50 days of inoculation. In addition to necrotic lesions, mycelia, and black conidia were observed on the leaves. Finally, a pathogenicity assay on table grape cultivars revealed the cultivar 'Cotton Candy' as the most susceptible to Aspergillus spp., and 'Prime Seedless' as the least susceptible. Rapid elongation of coleoptiles from rice seeds to reach the water surface enables plants to survive submergence stress and therefore plays a crucial role in allowing direct seeding in rice cultivation. Gibberellin (GA) positively influences growth in rice, but the molecular mechanisms underlying its regulation of coleoptile elongation under submerged conditions remain unclear. In this study, we performed a weighted gene co-expression network analysis to conduct a preliminarily examination of the mechanisms. Four key modules were identified with high correlations to the GA regulation of submergence tolerance. The genes within these modules were mainly involved in the Golgi apparatus and carbohydrate metabolic pathways, suggesting their involvement in enhancing submergence tolerance. Further analysis of natural variation revealed that the specific hub genes Os03g0337900 , Os03g0355600 , and Os07g0638400 exhibited strong correlations with subspecies divergence of the coleoptile elongation phenotype. Consistent with this analysis, mutation of Os07g0638400 resulted in a lower germination potential and a stronger inhibition of coleoptile elongation under submerged conditions. The hub genes identified in this study provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying GA-dependent tolerance to submergence stress in rice, and a potential basis for future modification of rice germplasm to allow for direct seeding. The monotonicity of color type in naturally colored cottons (NCCs) has become the main limiting factor to their widespread use, simultaneously coexisting with poor fiber quality. The synchronous improvement of fiber quality and color become more urgent and crucial as the demand for sustainable development increases. The homologous gene of wild cotton Gossypium stocksii LAC15 in G. hirsutum, GhLAC15, was also dominantly expressed in the developing fibers of brown cotton XC20 from 5 DPA (day post anthesis) to 25 DPA, especially at the secondary cell wall thickening stage (20 DPA and 25 DPA). In XC20 plants with downregulated GhLAC15 (GhLAC15i), a remarkable reduction in proanthocyanidins (PAs) and lignin contents was observed. Some of the key genes in the phenylpropane and flavonoid biosynthesis pathway were down‐regulated in GhLAC15i plants. Notably, the fiber length of GhLAC15i plants showed an obvious increase and the fiber color was lightened. Moreover, we found that the thickness of cotton fiber cell wall was decreased in GhLAC15i plants and the fiber surface became smoother compared to that of WT. Taken together, this study revealed that GhLAC15 played an important role in PAs and lignin biosynthesis in naturally colored cotton fibers. Insect attachment devices enhance adhesion to complex-geometry substrates by increasing the real contact area. In nature, insects mainly interact with plant surfaces that are often covered by 3D wax structures. Here, we describe, discuss, and give a mechanical interpretation of plant waxes and the possible fracture mechanisms of these wax structures during their interactions with the adhesive pads of insects. Low nutrient availability is a key characteristic of the phyllosphere (the aerial surface of plants). Phyllospheric bacteria utilize a wide array of carbon sources generated by plant hosts. Glycine betaine (GB) is a plant-derived compound that can be metabolized by certain members of the phyllosphere microbiota. Metabolism of glycine betaine generates formaldehyde, an intermediate of methylotrophic metabolism, leading us to investigate how the ubiquitous plant colonizing bacterium Methylorubrum extorquens PA1 might metabolize GB encountered in its native environment. M. extorquens PA1 cannot utilize GB as a sole carbon source. Through suppressor mutation analysis, we show that M. extorquens PA1 encodes a conserved GB utilization pathway that can be activated by single point mutations conferring GB utilization as a carbon source. We identified the gene cluster encoding the GB catabolic enzymes and found that gene expression was induced in the presence of GB. We show that utilization of GB is conserved among representative Methylobacterium species and generates the one-carbon metabolism intermediate formaldehyde, which M. extorquens utilizes as a source of energy. Our results support a model where suppressor mutations in Mext_3745 or ftsH (Mext_4840) prevent the degradation of the dimethylglycine dehydrogenase subunit DgcB by the membrane integral protease FtsH, conferring the ability to utilize GB by either (i) restoring stable membrane topology of DgcB or (ii) decreasing FtsH protease activity, respectively. The present experiment was conducted in bhindi / okra to observe the extent of heterosis for eight characters of plant and fruit yield traits through diallel analysis. The characters consist of plant height (cm), number of primary branches per plant, node at which 1st flower appears, number of nodes on main stem, internodal length, days to 50% flowering, pod yield per plant (g) and pod yield per hectare (q/ha). The experimental material comprised of 66 F1 hybrids developed from crossing 12 okra genotypes in diallel crossing excluding reciprocals. Out of eight characters studied, plant height, number of branches per plant and number of nodes on main stem are growth determining features. They generally decide the fruit/pod bearing surface of the okra plant. Therefore, Positive heterosis is desirable for plant height, number of branches per plant, number of nodes on main stem including fruit yield per plant and fruit yield per hectare but negative heterosis is profitable for node at which 1st flower appears, intermodal length and days to 50% flowering. Out of 66 F1, 50, 32 and 38 hybrids showed significant heterosis positively over mid parent, better parent and standard check respectively for fruit yield per plant and fruit yield per hectare and the highest was reported in hybrids IC-45831 ×IC-43733 subsequently IC-45831 ×Pusa A-4. Due to the complex shape of the tea tree canopy and the large undulation of a tea garden terrain, the quality of fresh tea leaves harvested by existing tea harvesting machines is poor. This study proposed a tea canopy surface profiling method based on 2D LiDAR perception and investigated the extraction and fitting methods of canopy point clouds. Meanwhile, a tea profiling harvester prototype was developed and field tests were conducted. The tea profiling harvesting device adopted a scheme of sectional arrangement of multiple groups of profiling tea harvesting units, and each unit sensed the height information of its own bottom canopy area through 2D LiDAR. A cross-platform communication network was established, enabling point cloud fitting of tea plant surfaces and accurate estimation of cutter profiling height through the RANSAC algorithm. Additionally, a sensing control system with multiple execution units was developed using rapid control prototype technology. The results of field tests showed that the bud leaf integrity rate was 84.64%, the impurity rate was 5.94%, the missing collection rate was 0.30%, and the missing harvesting rate was 0.68%. Furthermore, 89.57% of the harvested tea could be processed into commercial tea, with 88.34% consisting of young tea shoots with one bud and three leaves or fewer. All of these results demonstrated that the proposed device effectively meets the technical standards for machine-harvested tea and the requirements of standard tea processing techniques. Medicinal plants of the Moraceae family, such as Ficus racemosa linn , have been traditionally used in the North Karnataka region for treating various ailments. This study aims to analyze the elemental composition and nano-micro structural morphology of selected species of Moraceae family medicinal plants, focusing on their potential therapeutic applications. Samples were collected from the Dharwad and Gadag districts in North Karnataka. The surface morphology at nano and micro levels was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope, while the elemental composition was analyzed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The study emphasizes the detailed examination of the specific weight percent of elemental concentration and the morphological features observed. The analysis revealed fine, irregularly shaped particles with an average diameter of 20 to 50 μm on the plant surface. Ecological connectivity in landscapes is crucial for plant diversity conservation. The barrier risk to ecological connectivity represents the risk to ecological connectivity loss or weakening, resulting from the barrier to biological information exchange among habitats. Therefore, clarifying the barrier risk to the ecological connectivity of plant diversity in space can reveal the spatial impacts of reduced ecological connectivity on plant diversity. This study analyzed effects of karst peak, river network, arable land, and impervious surface on plant diversity in karst natural, countryside, urban, and island landscapes in Guizhou Province with fragile environment. Then, we calculated the barrier distance of ecological connectivity to reveal the barrier risk to the ecological connectivity of plant diversity in space. The results showed that karst peak was the source of high plant diversity, and plant diversity could diffuse about 400m around karst peaks. River network and arable land enhanced the connectivity among karst peaks to maintain plant diversity, and the effect on enhancing the connectivity was about 300m and 450 m, respectively, while the weakening effect of impervious surface on connectivity was about 350 m. Based on the distance for plant diversity diffusing around karst peaks, the barrier distance of ecological connectivity was determined by the combination type of river network, arable land and impervious surface in landscapes. From low to high, the barrier risk to the ecological connectivity of plant diversity was about 1,110 m in the combination of river network and arable land, about 790m in the combination of river network, arable land and impervious surface, about 520 min the combination of arable land and impervious surface, about 400m in the combination of river network and impervious surface. Our findings clarify the barrier risk to the ecological connectivity of plant diversity in space, and provide a scientific basis for plant diversity conservation from the perspective of ecological connectivity. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in creating environmentally friendly products using natural resources. Plant fibers, also known as lignocellulosic fibers, are hydrophilic due to the interaction and attraction between water molecules and the hydroxyl groups present in their components. The inherent hydrophilicity of plant fibers often prevents them from interacting effectively with hydrophobic polymer matrices. In order to improve the adhesion between plant fibers and the matrix, it is necessary to modify the surface of the fibers. Commonly used chemical processes include mercerization, silane treatment, acetylation, permanganate treatment, acrylation, benzoylation, peroxide treatment, stearic acid treatment, isocyanate treatment and sodium chlorite intervention. The desirability of chemically modifying the surface of plant fibers has declined due to several limitations. Plant fibers can be modified in an environmentally friendly way by various methods, such as plasma therapy and treatments using fungi, enzymes and bacteria. Singlet oxygen (SO) is among the most potent reactive oxygen species, and readily oxidizes proteins, lipids and DNA. It can be generated at the plant surface by phototoxins in the epidermis, acting as a direct defense against pathogens and herbivores (including humans). SO can also accumulate within mitochondria, peroxisomes, cytosol and the nucleus through multiple enzymatic and nonenzymatic processes. However, the majority of research on intracellular SO generation in plants has focused on transfer of light energy to triplet oxygen by photopigments from the chloroplast. SO accumulates in response to diverse stresses that perturb chloroplast metabolism, and while its high reactivity limits diffusion distances, it participates in retrograde signalling through the EXECUTER1 sensor, generation of carotenoid metabolites and possibly other unknown pathways. SO thereby reprogrammes nuclear gene expression and modulates hormone signalling and programmed cell death. While SO signalling has long been known to regulate plant responses to high‐light stress, recent literature also suggests a role in plant interactions with insects, bacteria and fungi. The goals of this review are to provide a brief overview of SO, summarize evidence for its involvement in biotic stress responses and discuss future directions for the study of SO in defense signalling. Understanding the evolutionary forces that maintain phenotypic variation in ecologically relevant traits has long been one of the central goals of evolutionary ecology. While the maintenance of variation in plant defense is most often hypothesized to be due to trait trade-offs or spatiotemporal variation in herbivore abundance, the role that heterogeneous selective agents may play on the maintenance of variation in plant defense is less examined. Trichomes are hair-like appendages on plant surfaces that can defend against multiple damaging agents such as pathogens, herbivores, and UV radiation. It is currently unknown however if conflicting selection from such heterogeneous agents of damage may act to maintain the variation observed in trichome traits. Here, we assess whether trichomes serve as an herbicide resistance trait and how it coincides with the conventionally studied defensive strategy of herbivory resistance. In a series of experiments, we exposed the annual invasive velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) to glyphosate (active ingredient in "Roundup") to investigate whether trichome traits (type and density) are linked to herbicide resistance and to test whether herbicide influences selection on plant trichomes. We found that an increased proportion of branched trichomes positively impacted herbicide resistance and chewing herbivory resistance. We also found evidence that glyphosate imposes positive selection on branched trichomes in velvetleaf. Overall, our results indicate that branched trichomes can contribute to both herbicide and herbivory resistance, serving a concordant rather than conflicting role to reduce plant injury. Our findings further suggest that novel anthropogenic agents of selection can alter the composition of plant defense traits, potentially impacting trait-mediated interactions among external stressors.
