Summary: Plants naturally harbor diverse microbiomes that can dramatically impact their health and productivity. However, it remains unclear how fungal microbiome diversity, especially in the phyllosphere, impacts intermicrobial interactions and consequent nonadditive effects on plant productivity.Combining manipulative experiments, field collections, culturing, microbiome sequencing, and synthetic consortia, we experimentally tested for the first time how foliar fungal community diversity impacts plant productivity. We inoculated morning glories (Ipomoea hederifolia L.) with 32 phyllosphere consortia of either low or high diversity or with single fungal taxa, and measured effects on plant productivity and allocation.We found the following: (1) nonadditive effects were pervasive with 56% of fungal consortia interacting synergistically or antagonistically to impact plant productivity, including some consortia capable of generating acute synergism (e.g. > 1000% increase in productivity above the additive expectation), (2) interactions among 'commensal' fungi were responsible for this nonadditivity in diverse consortia, (3) synergistic interactions were approximately four times stronger than antagonistic effects, (4) fungal diversity affected the magnitude but not frequency or direction of nonadditivity, and (5) diversity affected plant performance nonlinearly with the highest performance in low‐diversity treatments.These findings highlight the importance of interpreting plant–microbiome interactions under a framework that incorporates intermicrobial interactions and nonadditive outcomes to understand natural complexity. Global warming is a leading environmental stress that reduces plant productivity worldwide. Several beneficial microorganisms reduce stress; however, the mechanism by which plant–microbe interactions occur and reduce stress remains to be fully elucidated. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mutualistic interaction between the plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial strain SH-19 and soybeans of the Pungsannamul variety. The results showed that SH-19 possessed several plant growth-promoting traits, such as the production of indole-3-acetic acid, siderophore, and exopolysaccharide, and had the capacity for phosphate solubilisation. The heat tolerance assay showed that SH-19 could withstand temperatures up to 45 °C. The strain SH-19 was identified as P. megaterium using the 16S ribosomal DNA gene sequence technique. Inoculation of soybeans with SH-19 improved seedling characteristics under high-temperature stress. This may be due to an increase in the endogenous salicylic acid level and a decrease in the abscisic acid level compared with the negative control group. The strain of SH-19 increased the activity of the endogenous antioxidant defense system, resulting in the upregulation of GSH (44.8%), SOD (23.1%), APX (11%), and CAT (52.6%). Furthermore, this study involved the transcription factors GmHSP, GmbZIP1, and GmNCED3. The findings showed upregulation of the two transcription factors GmbZIP1 (17%), GmNCED3 (15%) involved in ABA biosynthesis and induced stomatal regulation, similarly, a downregulation of the expression pattern of GmHSP by 25% was observed. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the strain SH-19 promotes plant growth, reduces high-temperature stress, and improves physiological parameters by regulating endogenous phytohormones, the antioxidant defense system, and genetic expression. The optimal timing of transition from vegetative to floral reproductive phase is critical for plant productivity and agricultural yields. Light plays a decisive role in regulating this transition. The B‐box (BBX) family of transcription factors regulates several light‐mediated developmental processes in plants, including flowering. Here, we identify a previously uncharacterized group II BBX family member, BBX13/COL15, as a negative regulator of flowering under long‐day conditions. BBX13 is primarily expressed in the leaf vasculature, buds, and flowers, showing a similar spatial expression pattern to the major flowering time regulators CO and FT. bbx13 mutants flower early, while BBX13‐overexpressors exhibit delayed flowering under long days. Genetic analyses showed that BBX13 acts upstream to CO and FT and negatively regulates their expression. BBX13 physically interacts with CO and inhibits the CO‐mediated transcriptional activation of FT. In addition, BBX13 directly binds to the CORE2 motif on the FT promoter, where CO also binds. Chromatin immunoprecipitation data indicates that BBX13 reduces the in vivo binding of CO on the FT promoter. Through luciferase assay, we found that BBX13 inhibits the CO‐mediated transcriptional activation of FT. Together, these findings suggest that BBX13/COL15 represses flowering in Arabidopsis by attenuating the binding of CO on the FT promoter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salinity is a major abiotic stressor that can significantly impact plant growth and productivity. To evaluate the physiological responses of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L. Ps301) to gradual salinity stress (SLS) and shock salinity stress (STS), an experiment was conducted using a factorially based completely randomized design (CRD). The sodium chloride (NaCl) induced salinity treatments were administered in the nutrient solution in two forms: STS and SLS. The SLS was applied for 8 days, with stress levels increasing every 2 days; STS was administered for 48 h. The signaling response was activated more rapidly and abruptly in response to STS; however, after the various adaptive responses to salinity, these signals were more activated in response to SLS. The STS led to plant growth a greater decrease than SLS. The electrolyte leakage (EL) increased under both SLS and STS by 60% and 61% compared to the control, respectively. Other stress indices, such as phenol and abscisic acid (ABA) content, increased by 26% and 71% under SLS compared to STS. Salinity increased the leaf water potential (LWP) in two salt regimes, and the root water potential (RWP) in STS conditions only. Salinity stress decreased plasma membrane intrinsic protein gene expression in roots, especially in STS compared to SLS. The STS increased plasma membrane intrinsic protein (PIP) expression in leaves more than SLS. It was concluded that salinity impairs the growth and physiological characteristics of pepper; however, the signaling and stress indices respond differently to STS and SLS application. SUMMARY Drought is one of the most important abiotic stresses, and seriously threatens plant development and productivity. Increasing evidence indicates that chromatin remodelers are pivotal for plant drought response. However, molecular mechanisms of chromatin remodelers‐mediated plant drought responses remain obscure. In this study, we found a novel interactor of BRM called BRM‐associated protein involved in drought response (BAPID), which interacted with SWI/SNF chromatin remodeler BRM and drought‐induced transcription factor Di19. Our findings demonstrated that BAPID acted as a positive drought regulator since drought tolerance was increased in BAPID‐overexpressing plants, but decreased in BAPID‐deficient plants, and physically bound to PR1, PR2, and PR5 promoters to mediate expression of PR genes to defend against dehydration stress. Genetic approaches demonstrated that BRM acted epistatically to BAPID and Di19 in drought response in Arabidopsis. Furthermore, the BAPID protein‐inhibited interaction between BRM and Di19, and suppressed the inhibition of BRM on the Di19‐PR module by mediating the H3K27me3 deposition at PR loci, thus changing nucleosome accessibility of Di19 and activating transcription of PR genes in response to drought. Our results shed light on the molecular mechanism whereby the BAPID‐BRM‐Di19‐PRs pathway mediates plant drought responses. Diverse and complex microbiomes are found in virtually every environment on Earth. Bacteria and fungi often co-dominate environmental microbiomes, and there is growing recognition that bacterial-fungal interactions (BFI) have significant impacts on the functioning of their associated microbiomes, environments, and hosts. Investigating BFI in vitro remains a challenge, particularly when attempting to examine interactions at multiple scales of system complexity. Fabricated devices can provide control over both biotic composition and abiotic factors within an experiment to enable the characterization of diverse BFI phenotypes such as modulation of growth rate, production of biomolecules, and alterations to physical movements. Engineered devices ranging from microfluidic chips to simulated rhizosphere systems have been and will continue to be invaluable to BFI research, and it is anticipated that such devices will continue to be developed for diverse applications in the field. This will allow researchers to address specific questions regarding the nature of BFI and how they impact larger microbiome and environmental processes such as biogeochemical cycles, plant productivity, and overall ecosystem resilience. Devices that are currently used for experimental investigations of bacteria, fungi, and BFI are discussed herein along with some of the associated challenges and several recommendations for future device design and applications. Enhancing crop photosynthesis through genetic engineering technologies offers numerous opportunities to increase plant productivity. Key approaches include optimizing light utilization, increasing cytochrome b6f complex levels, and improving carbon fixation. Modifications to Rubisco and the photosynthetic electron transport chain are central to these strategies. Introducing alternative photorespiratory pathways and enhancing carbonic anhydrase activity can further increase the internal CO2 concentration, thereby improving photosynthetic efficiency. The efficient translocation of photosynthetically produced sugars, which are managed by sucrose transporters, is also critical for plant growth. Additionally, incorporating genes from C4 plants, such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NADP-malic enzymes, enhances the CO2 concentration around Rubisco, reducing photorespiration. Targeting microRNAs and transcription factors is vital for increasing photosynthesis and plant productivity, especially under stress conditions. This review highlights potential biological targets, the genetic modifications of which are aimed at improving photosynthesis and increasing plant productivity, thereby determining key areas for future research and development. The use of burned plant biomass ashes could help not only with respect to utilizing combustion residues, but also with respect to optimizing the nutrition of cultivated agricultural plants without harming the environment. With this aim, a pot experiment of the effects of multi-crop biomass ash on faba bean seedlings was carried out in the Academy of Agriculture of the Vytautas Magnus University (VMU). Four ash fertilization rates were tested: 1. unfertilized (N0, comparative-control treatment); 2. fertilized at a low rate (N1, 200 kg ha−1); 3. fertilized at an average rate (N2, 1000 kg ha−1); 4. fertilized at a high rate (N3, 2000 kg ha−1). Final observations showed that ash fertilization significantly increases the height of faba bean sprouts by 21–38%, the length of the roots by 10–20% and the chlorophyll concentration in the leaves by 17%. The average green biomass of faba bean sprouts consistently increased with increasing fertilization rate, from 56% to 209%. Dried biomass increased by 160–220%. With increasing ash fertilization rate, the percentage of dry matter in the roots decreased by 10–50%. We recommend fertilizing faba bean with medium (1000 kg ha−1) and high (2000 kg ha−1) ash rates, as these rates led to the largest plants with the highest productivity potential. Satureja rechingeri Jamzad (known as "Jatra" in Persian), which belongs to the Lamiaceae family, is a rich source of essential oil particularly carvacrol, and rosmarinic acid. Drought stress has a detrimental impact on the physiological and biochemical parameters of plants, leading to a decline in plant productivity. Melatonin (MT), a new plant growth regulator found abundantly in plants, has been found to enhance the plant's internal resistance to various environmental stresses. The present study aimed to examine the impact of exogenously applied MT on the agro-morphological, physio-biochemical, and phytochemical traits of S. rechingeri plants cultivated under different levels of drought stress. The results indicated that plants treated with 200 µM MT obtained the highest plant height, length and width of leaf, fresh, dry and drug weight under different drought stress levels. The highest values of relative water content (RWC) (93.5%) and chlorophyll content (15.4 mg/g FW) were recorded by MT 200 µM and 100 µM, respectively, in 100% FC. Drought stress treatments (40, 60, and 80% FC) without foliar spray of MT significantly enhanced the H2O2 content, electrolyte leakage, and malondialdehyde content in leaves, whereas MT treatment under drought stress significantly decreased the above parameters. The lowest H2O2 content (11.5 nmol/g), electrolyte leakage (3.08%), and malondialdehyde content (0.78 µM/g) were obtained by 200 µM MT at 100% FC. In contrast, drought stress treatment increased the total phenol content (TPC), rosmarinic acid (RA), essential oils (EOs) content and yield, and carvacrol. The maximum values of TPC (28.1 mg GAE/g DW), EOs content (3.63%) and yield (0.96%), and carvacrol (95.66%) were achieved by 200 µM MT at 40% FC. The highest RA content (7.43 mg GAE/g DW) was recorded in 100 µM MT at 40% FC. Thus, foliar spray MT has the potential to enhance plant growth through the mitigation of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative harm, as well as the augmentation of photosynthesis pigments, secondary metabolites such as phenolics, EOs levels, overall antioxidant scavenging capacity, and the preservation of RWC during periods of drought stress. AbstractFluoride is one of the most highly toxic soil and air pollutant prevalent in aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems. It seriously affects crop plant quality and productivity worldwide. Although a crop with great nutritional value; oats are susceptible to a variety of abiotic stresses. In the current study, the responses of six oat cultivars (JHO-99-1, JHO-2009, BJ-2012, KANT, JHO-822, and JHO-2000) to fluoride stress on growth measurements, photosynthetic pigments, and photosynthetic parameters have been studied. The fluoride (200 and 400 mg/kg) was added to the soil artificially, seeds were sown and the pots were kept under controlled conditions. Another set of plants without the fluoride treatment (0 mg/kg) were labeled as control. The experiment was conducted in a plant growth chamber and fluoride was artificially added to the soil prior to seeding. All six oat cultivars subjected to fluoride stress exhibited an overall decrease in plant growth when compared to the control. Further under fluoride stress, while the oat cultivars also showed a decrease in chlorophyll content and different photosynthetic parameters but on the contrary the antioxidant activities were increased. While the cultivar JHO-822 was most affected under fluoride stress, JHO-99-1 showed tolerance toward fluoride toxicity in comparison to other cultivars JHO-2009, BJ-2012, KANT, JHO-822, and JHO-2000. The phenotyping of plant roots is essential for improving plant productivity and adaptation. However, traditional techniques for assembling root phenotyping information are limited and often labor-intensive, especially for woody plants. In this study, an advanced approach called accurate and detailed quantitative structure model-based (AdQSM-based) root phenotypic measurement (ARPM) was developed to automatically extract phenotypes from Ginkgo tree root systems. The approach involves three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the point cloud obtained from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to extract key phenotypic parameters, including root diameter (RD), length, surface area, and volume. To evaluate the proposed method, two approaches [minimum spanning tree (MST)-based and triangulated irregular network (TIN)-based] were used to reconstruct the Ginkgo root systems from point clouds, and the number of lateral roots along with RD were extracted and compared with traditional methods. The results indicated that the RD extracted directly from point clouds [coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.99, root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 0.41 cm] outperformed the results of 3D models (MST-based: R2 = 0.71, RMSE = 2.20 cm; TIN-based: R2 = 0.54, RMSE = 2.80 cm). Additionally, the MST-based model (F1 = 0.81) outperformed the TIN-based model (F1 = 0.80) in detecting the number of first-order and second-order lateral roots. Each phenotyping trait fluctuated with a different cloud parameter (CP), and the CP value of 0.002 (r = 0.94, p < 0.01) was found to be advantageous for better extraction of structural phenotypes. This study has helped with the extraction and quantitative analysis of root phenotypes and enhanced our understanding of the relationship between architectural parameters and corresponding physiological functions of tree roots. Spatial information about plant health and productivity are essential when assessing the progress towards Sustainable Development Goals such as life on land and zero hunger. Plant health and productivity are strongly linked to a plant's phenological progress. Remote sensing, and since the launch of Sentinel-1 (S1), specifically, radar-based frameworks have been studied for the purpose of monitoring phenological development. This study produces insights into how crop phenology shapes S1 signatures of PolSAR features and InSAR coherence of wheat, canola, sugar beet. and potato across multiple years and orbits. Hereby, differently smoothed time series and a base line of growing degree days are stacked to estimate the patterns of occurrence of extreme values and break points. These patterns are then linked to in situ observations of phenological developments. The comparison of patterns across multiple orbits and years reveals that a single optimized fit hampers the tracking capacities of an entire season monitoring framework, as does the sole reliance on extreme values. VV and VH backscatter intensities outperform all other features, but certain combinations of phenological stage and crop type are better covered by a complementary set of PolSAR features and coherence. With regard to PolSAR features, alpha and entropy can be replaced by the cross-polarization ratio for tracking certain stages. Moreover, a range of moderate incidence angles is better suited for monitoring crop phenology. Also, wheat and canola are favored by a late afternoon overpass. In sum, this study provides insights into phenological developments at the landscape level that can be of further use when investigating spatial and temporal variations within the landscape. Fusarium graminearum, a devastating fungal pathogen, causes great economic losses to crop yields worldwide. The present study investigated the potential of Streptomyces pratensis S10 to alleviate F. graminearum stress in wheat seedlings based on plant growth-promoting and resistance-inducing assays. The bioassays revealed that S10 exhibited multiple plant growth-promoting properties, including the production of siderophores, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase (ACC), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), phosphate solubilization, and nitrogen fixation. Meanwhile, the pot experiment demonstrated that S10 improved wheat plant development, substantially enhancing wheat height, weight, root activity, and chlorophyll content. Consistently, genome mining identified abundant genes associated with plant growth promotion. S10 induced resistance against F. graminearum in wheat seedlings. The disease incidence and disease index reduced by nearly 52% and 65% in S10 pretreated wheat seedlings, respectively, compared with those infected with F. graminearum only in the non-contact inoculation assay. Moreover, S10 enhanced callose deposition and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and induced the activities of CAT, SOD, POD, PAL, and PPO. Furthermore, the quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) results indicated that S10 pretreatment increased the expression of SA- (PR1.1, PR2, PR5, and PAL1) and JA/ET-related genes (PR3, PR4a, PR9, and PDF1.2) in wheat seedlings upon F. graminearum infection. Background and aim: Soil salinity presents major constraint for symbiotic root-microbe interactions and overall crop productivity. While compost amendments are effective, availability is limited in drylands where salinity is prevalent. As an alternative approach, we investigated the foliar application of signaling compounds. Methods: In this study, cowpea plants were evaluated under the treatments of foliar application of strigolactones (SL), salicylic acid (SA), SL and SA or SLSA, and coumarins (CMR), under soil amendment with gypsum (GP) and compost (CMP), and unamended natural saline soil as the control soil (CS) treatment. The microbiome structure in the rhizosphere, roots, leaves, and seeds were assessed, along with root traits, nodulation, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) colonization, nutrient concentrations, and biomass yield. Results: Several treatments exhibited positive effects, with CMP and SLSA yielding the most comprehensive improvements. The SLSA outperformed CMP in enhancing nodulation and AMF colonization. Only CMP induced a significant shift in the rhizosphere and root microbiome structure, while the leaf and seed microbiomes remained stable. An AMF Rhizophagus in the rhizosphere and AMF Diversispora in the root endosphere of SLSA treatment, and Actinobacteria and Streptomyces in the root endosphere of the SLSA treatment showed increased abundance. The increased abundance of several microbial groups with SLSA indicated their effectiveness as beneficial keystone taxa, which appears to be an influential factor for impacting salinity tolerance in the legume. Conclusions: Overall, these findings confirm that the application of signaling compounds is a viable strategy for enhancing symbiotic root-microbe interactions and improving plant productivity in saline soils. Background and aims: Afforestation can alter belowground microbial diversity and affect soil‒plant feedback, which is crucial for understanding nutrient cycles and ecosystem productivity. Most studies have focused on the carbon and nitrogen cycles in forest ecosystems; however, there are few studies on the effect of afforestation in soil microbial diversity on phosphorus (P) nutrients. In this study, we explored the effect of soil microbial communities on soil‒plant P feedback under long-term afforestation. Methods: Typical poplar plantations were selected from the Lhasa River Basin. We assessed the P content, activity of extracellular enzyme related to P acquisition, rhizosphere soil microbes, and mechanism of microbial community. Results: Increased bacterial richness and evenness were beneficial to soil and plant P nutrition; however, the community differentiation of bacteria and fungi had no positive effect on the P content. Ecological stochasticity drove for the assembly of the rhizosphere soil microbial community after afforestation on the Tibetan Plateau. Homogenizing dispersal dominated bacterial and fungal assemblies. Ecological drift was another stochastic process that affected the microbial assembly. Conclusion: Bacterial richness and evenness had positive effects on soil‒plant P feedback, whereas microbial differentiation did not. Homogenizing dispersal and ecological drift are intrinsic factors that regulate the effects of microbial community diversity on soil‒plant P feedback processes. This study provides the evidence on the intrinsic mechanism of belowground microbial diversity influencing soil‒plant P feedback. Drought is one of the most adverse factors affecting plant growth and productivity. Identifying elite genotypes and their ideotypic traits conferring high yield potential and drought tolerance is critical in selecting and breeding drought‐tolerant wheat cultivars. In this study, we conducted field experiments at the Xinxiang Agricultural Comprehensive Experimental station in the North China Plain from 2018 to 2020 and assessed 209 wheat cultivars released since the 1940s under irrigated and nonirrigated conditions. Then, we selected drought‐tolerant cultivars by classifying them into four groups based on yield response to drought stress and several drought indices. Finally, the key ideotypic traits associated with high yield potential and drought tolerance were identified. Results indicated that the grain yield of the 209 cultivars decreased on average by 10.4% and 9.4% under nonirrigated treatment in 2018–2019 and 2019–2020, respectively, relative to full irrigation. The high‐yielding cultivars under both irrigation treatments are characterised by a compact plant type, larger thousand‐grain weight, larger chlorophyll content, higher leaf photosynthesis, shorter plant height and stay‐green traits. The stomatal and nonstomatal limitations are strongly associated with genotype yield performance, elucidating a potential mechanism underlying drought tolerance. Drought tolerance and yield stability of wheat cultivars have been improved through breeding over the past 70 years. Rhizosphere microbial communities play a substantial role in plant productivity. We studied the rhizosphere bacteria and fungi of 51 distinct potato cultivars grown under similar greenhouse conditions using a metabarcoding approach. As expected, individual cultivars were the most important determining factor of the rhizosphere microbial composition; however, differences were also obtained when grouping cultivars according to their growth characteristics. We showed that plant growth characteristics were related to deterministic and stochastic assembly processes of bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. The bacterial genera Arthrobacter and Massilia (known to produce indole acetic acid and siderophores) exhibited greater relative abundance in high- and medium-performing cultivars. Bacterial co-occurrence networks were larger in the rhizosphere of these cultivars and were characterized by a distinctive combination of plant beneficial Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria along with a module of diazotrophs namely Azospira, Azoarcus , and Azohydromonas. Conversely, the network within low-performing cultivars revealed the lowest nodes, hub taxa, edges density, robustness, and the highest average path length resulting in reduced microbial associations, which may potentially limit their effectiveness in promoting plant growth. Our findings established a clear pattern between plant productivity and the rhizosphere microbiome composition and structure for the investigated potato cultivars, offering insights for future management practices. This paper extends the evidence on the impact of trade reforms on firms by focusing on non‐tariff measures (NTMs), an increasingly important trade policy instrument in advanced and developing economies. We build a novel time‐varying dataset on all NTMs applied to imported products by Indonesia and quantify the trade distortions they generate. We find that unlike tariffs, which reduce plants' productivity, NTMs do not significantly affect plants' performance. However, the most trade‐reducing NTMs are associated with lower plant‐level markups, which is consistent with the increase in the cost of imported inputs induced by these NTMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salinity is one of the primary abiotic stresses that seriously hampers plant quality and productivity. It is feasible to reduce or reverse the negative effects of salt through the supplementation of silicon (Si) and aspartic acid (Asp). However, the question of how exogenous Si and Asp induce salt tolerance in celery remains incipient. Thus, this study was performed to determine the synergistic effects of Si and Asp on the alleviation of salt stress in celery. To this end, the celery plants were cultivated in a controlled regime (light for 14 h at 22 °C; darkness for 10 h at 16 °C) and treated with one of five treatments (CK, 100 mM NaCl, 100 mM NaCl + 75 mg/L Si, 100 mM NaCl + 100 mg/L Asp, and 100 mM NaCl + 75 mg/L Si + 100 mg/L Asp). Results showed that solely NaCl-treated celery plants developed salt toxicity, as characterized by decreased growth, declined photosynthetic ability, disturbed nutritious status and internal ion balance, and a boosted antioxidant defense system (Improved antioxidant enzymes and reduced ROS accumulation). In contrast, these adverse effects of NaCl were ameliorated by the additions of Si and Asp, regardless of Si, Asp, or both. Moreover, the mitigatory impacts of the co-application of Si and Asp on salt stress were more pronounced compared to when one of them was solely applied. Biomass serves as a crucial indicator of plant productivity, and the development of biomass models has become an efficient way for estimating tree biomass production rapidly and accurately. This study aimed to develop a rapid and accurate model to estimate the individual aboveground biomass of Salix suchowensis. Growth parameters, including plant height (PH), ground diameter (GD), number of first branches (NFB), number of second branches (NSB) and aboveground fresh biomass weight (FW), were measured from 892 destructive sample trees. Correlation analysis indicated that GD had higher positive correlations with FW than PH, NFB and NSB. According to the biological features and field observations of S. suchowensis, the samples were classified into three categories: single-stemmed type, first-branched type and second-branched type. Based on the field measurement data, regression models were constructed separately between FW and each growth trait (PH, GD, NFB and NSB) using linear and nonlinear regression functions (linear, exponential and power). Then, multiple power regression and multiple linear regression were conducted to estimate the fresh biomass of three types of S. suchowensis. For the single-stemmed plant type, model M1 with GD as the single parameter had the highest adj R2, outperforming the other models. Among the 16 constructed biomass-estimating equations for the first-branched plant type, model M32 FW = 0.010371 × PH1.15862 × GD1.250581 × NFB0.190707 was found to have the best fit, with the highest coefficient of determination (adj R2 = 0.6627) and lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC = 5997.3081). When it comes to the second-branched plant type, the best-fitting equation was proved to be the multiple power model M43 with PH, GD, NFB and NSB as parameters, which had the highest adj R2 value and best-fitting effect. The stability and reliability of the models were confirmed by the F-test, repeated k-fold cross-validation and paired-sample t-tests. The models developed in this study could provide efficient tools for accurately estimating the total aboveground biomass for S. suchowensis at individual tree levels. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread obligate symbionts of plants. This dynamic symbiosis plays a large role in successful plant performance, given that AMF help to ameliorate plant responses to abiotic and biotic stressors. Although the importance of this symbiosis is clear, less is known about what may be driving this symbiosis, the plant's need for nutrients or the excess of plant photosynthate being transferred to the AMF, information critical to assess the functionality of this relationship. Characterizing the AMF community along a natural plant productivity gradient is a first step in understanding how this symbiosis may vary across the landscape. We surveyed the AMF community diversity at 12 sites along a plant productivity gradient driven by soil nitrogen availability. We found that AMF diversity in soil environmental DNA significantly increased along with the growth of the host plants Acerrubrum and A. saccharum., a widespread tree genus. These increases also coincided with a natural soil inorganic N availability gradient. We hypothesize photosynthate from the increased tree growth is being allocated to the belowground AMF community, leading to an increase in diversity. These findings contribute to understanding this complex symbiosis through the lens of AMF turnover and suggest that a more diverse AMF community is associated with increased host–plant performance. Protein hydrolysates are plant biostimulants containing amino acids, oligopeptides, and peptides in their composition. When supplied to plants, protein hydrolysates (HPs) have been identified to improve nitrogen metabolism, enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes, boost plant defense response to stresses, and positively impact the quantity and quality of products. Soybean is a crucial global commodity, with nitrogen being the primary nutrient for crop development as it directly affects productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an HP-based biostimulant on the N metabolism in nodulated soybean plants and their productivity. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to test two modes of application of the 0.20% HP-based biostimulant. Soybean plants, growing in pots, were treated with 0.20% HP either via seed treatment or foliar application (at growth stages V3 and V5). Activities of enzymes and compounds related to N metabolism, gene expression, and productivity components were analyzed. It was observed that the mode of application did not significantly influence the results. The application of HPs increased the concentration of nitrate, amino acids, and ureides in soybean leaves. It also positively altered the expression of genes such as nitrate reductase, urease, and asparagine. Additionally, it enhanced productivity, resulting in plants with a greater number and weight of pods and grains. The accumulation of salt in arable lands is a source of significant abiotic stress, contributing to a 10% decline in the world's total arable lands and threatening food productivity and the sustainability of agriculture. About 76 million hectares of productive land are estimated to have been affected by human-induced salinization such as extreme salt deposits in soil, which are mainly caused by the actions of humans. For instance, continued irrigation and the frequent use of chemical fertilizers need to be understood. To ensure food availability, it is essential to improve upon traditional farming methods using current technologies to facilitate the reclamation of saline-affected arable lands to achieve high and sustainable food production. This review details current innovative strategies such as the modification of metabolic pathways, manipulation of antioxidant pathways, genetic engineering, RNA interference technology, engineered nanoparticles, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), organic amendments, and trace elements for improving saline marginal lands. These strategies were identified to have contributed to the improvement of plants salinity tolerance in diverse ways. For instance, the accumulation of plant metabolites such as amino acids, sugars, polyols, organic acids, saponins, anthocyanins, polyphenols, and tannins detoxify plants and play crucial roles in mitigating the detrimental effects of oxidative damage posed by salinity stress. Multiple plant miRNAs encoding the up- and down-regulation of single- and multi-ion transporters have been engineered in plant species to enhance salt tolerance. Nanomaterials and plant root system colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal increase water uptake, photosynthetic efficiency, and biomass allocation in plants exposed to saline stress by excluding 65 percent of the Na+ uptake and enhancing K+ uptake by 84.21 percent. Organic amendments and trace elements reduced salinity concentrations by 22 percent and improved growth by up to 84 percent in maize subjected to salinity stress. This study also discusses how researchers can use these strategies to improve plants growth, development, and survival in saline soil conditions to enhance the productivity and sustainability of agriculture. The strategies discussed in this study have also proven to be promising approaches for developing salinity stress tolerance strategies for plants to increase agricultural productivity and sustainability. Measuring ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) could be a valuable method for assessing whether nature‐based solutions, such as introducing non‐native species to benefit ecosystem functioning, yield net positive outcomes. While EMF metrics may provide a coarse overview of the functioning of a system, such metrics can obscure the interactions among multiple simultaneously occurring ecosystem functions. This could limit the predictive value and overall efficacy of EMF metrics for the management of environmental change impacts on ecosystem functioning. We carried out a mesocosm experiment with dung beetle temporal species richness (diversity) treatments in a pasture ecosystem in Aotearoa New Zealand and quantified cascading biotic and abiotic effects of introduced dung beetles (Onthophagus binodis and Onitis alexis) on multiple ecosystem functions. We measured nine individual ecosystem functions affected by dung beetles, including dung removal, total soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, soil microbial respiration, nitrate N, ammonium N, anaerobically mineralisable N and pasture biomass production. We first tested the effects of temporal dung beetle diversity on the nine individual ecosystem functions. We then tested how introduced dung beetle temporal diversity affects ecosystem multifunctionality by calculating EMF metrics using the averaging, threshold and the Hill numbers approaches. Finally, to investigate the underlying interactions among individual functions, we tested the direct and indirect effects of introduced dung beetles on the nine ecosystem functions using structural equation modelling (SEM). Only one out of the nine individual ecosystem functions was significantly affected by dung beetle introductions, whereas five of the six calculated EMF metrics increased significantly with temporal diversity of introduced dung beetles. However, when modelled within an SEM framework, dung beetle temporal diversity was found to directly affect dung removal, but with cascading effects on total N and anaerobically mineralisable N. Our results suggest that introducing and increasing dung beetle temporal diversity enhances the provisioning of multiple ecosystem functions, but that our ability to detect and explain changes in ecosystem multifunctionality is critically dependent on how EMF is quantified. Rising temperatures and higher atmospheric CO2 levels can potentially increase plant photosynthesis and boost forest productivity, thereby spurring litter inputs to soils on a global scale. Understanding the feedback loops between increased litter inputs and soil biota activity will allow for better prediction of organic matter and carbon (C) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Nematodes represent the full spectrum of trophic groups within the soil biota. Accordingly, we studied the link between nematode metabolic activities and plant litter input. For this, different litter input levels were manipulated in a temperate forest, including control zones without litter, natural litter input zones and zones with double, triple and quadruple amounts of natural litter input. Soil top layers (0–10 cm) were then collected to study the responses of nematode communities. Increased litter input positively influenced the abundance and diversity of nematodes, except for plant‐parasitic species. Higher litter input levels led to an enhancement in the ratio of bacterivores to the total of bacterivores and fungivores. More litter increased the K/r strategist ratio among bacterivores and the corresponding nematode metabolic footprints. More litter also stimulated nematode production and respiration components and improved the carbon use efficiency of bacterivores. Moreover, structural equation modelling revealed the crucial role of bacterivores in influencing soil organic C under increased litter input. In conclusion, our study shows that increased plant above‐ground litter input modifies the taxonomic and functional communities of soil nematodes, ultimately regulating carbon cycling in forest soils. Carbon assimilation by Rubisco is often a limitation to photosynthesis and therefore plant productivity. We have previously shown that transgenic co-expression of the Rubisco large (LS) and small (SS) subunits along with an essential Rubisco accumulation factor, Raf1, leads to faster growth, increased photosynthesis, and enhanced chilling tolerance in maize (Zea mays). Maize also requires Rubisco accumulation factor2 (Raf2) for full accumulation of Rubisco. Here we have analyzed transgenic maize lines with increased expression of Raf2 or Raf2 plus LS and SS. We show that increasing Raf2 expression alone had minor effects on photosynthesis, whereas expressing Raf2 with Rubisco subunits led to increased Rubisco content, more rapid carbon assimilation, and greater plant height, most notably in plants at least 6 weeks of age. The magnitude of the effects was similar to what was observed previously for expression of Raf1 together with Rubisco subunits. Taken together, this suggests that increasing the amount of either assembly factor with Rubisco subunits can independently enhance Rubisco abundance and some aspects of plant performance. These results could also imply either synergy or a degree of functional redundancy for Raf1 and Raf2, the latter of whose precise role in Rubisco assembly is currently unknown. Aims: Changes in precipitation patterns, such as the predicted increases in the frequency of climatic extremes, are likely to alter plant communities, but whether responses to drought or to wetter conditions respectively cause consistent, opposite responses is debated. Here, we assessed the response in biomass production and species diversity of water‐limited plant communities to the direction (increase or decrease) and magnitude (micro‐ and macro‐climatic effects) of changes in soil moisture. Location: We reciprocally translocated soils containing seed banks from two climates (semi‐arid and mediterranean) at a micro‐climatic (opposite slopes) and a macro‐climatic scale (between climates) in Chile. Results: Biomass production for the soils that were translocated from wetter to drier climates was unrelated to the available soil moisture. The lowest biomass was produced in the wettest climate on the wet slope. Biomass production increased after a translocation to the drier climate (representing the largest change in climate). Nonetheless, the highest overall biomass for the wet to dry translocation was produced on the mediterranean dry slope with intermediate soil moisture. However, on the same mediterranean dry slope, biomass was almost zero for soil translocated the other way round (from drier to wetter). Diversity after 24 months was unaffected by micro‐climatic change, but soils transplanted toward the drier climate yielded a plant community with increased diversity. Conclusion: Our results showed direction and magnitude of climate change but also the response factor that is studied matters to detect direction‐dependent responses; i.e., species richness had a linear and reversible response. However, the response of biomass depended on the origin of the transplanted material (soil and plant community), indicating history dependence (hysteresis). This emphasizes that responses to unidirectional climate manipulation experiments may not be able to capture the entire nature of the response of plant communities to climate change. Summary: Some plants exhibit dynamic hydraulic regulation, in which the strictness of hydraulic regulation (i.e. iso/anisohydry) changes in response to environmental conditions. However, the environmental controls over iso/anisohydry and the implications of flexible hydraulic regulation for plant productivity remain unknown.In Juniperus osteosperma, a drought‐resistant dryland conifer, we collected a 5‐month growing season time series of in situ, high temporal‐resolution plant water potential (Ψ) and stand gross primary productivity (GPP). We quantified the stringency of hydraulic regulation associated with environmental covariates and evaluated how predawn water potential contributes to empirically predicting carbon uptake.Juniperus osteosperma showed less stringent hydraulic regulation (more anisohydric) after monsoon precipitation pulses, when soil moisture and atmospheric demand were high, and corresponded with GPP pulses. Predawn water potential matched the timing of GPP fluxes and improved estimates of GPP more strongly than soil and/or atmospheric moisture, notably resolving GPP underestimation before vegetation green‐up.Flexible hydraulic regulation appears to allow J. osteosperma to prolong soil water extraction and, therefore, the period of high carbon uptake following monsoon precipitation pulses. Nitrogen (N) availability determines higher plant productivity and yield. However, the molecular mechanisms governing N acquisition and utilization remain largely unknown in maize. In this study, ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, and Ribo-seq analyses were conducted in maize roots under different N supply conditions. A set of differentially expressed genes enriched in N and phenylpropanoid metabolisms at both the transcription and translation levels were highlighted. Interestingly, less than half of low-N responsive genes were shared between transcription and translation. The alteration of translational efficiency (TE) is also an important mechanism by which maize responds to LN. In addition, we identified low-N-induced open chromatin regions (OCRs) and observed an enrichment of transcription factor (TF) binding motifs. Furthermore, we constructed a transcriptional regulatory network for maize roots subjected to low-N. Grafting high-yielding tomato varieties onto stress-tolerant rootstocks can mitigate the adverse effects of saline water irrigation on plant tomato productivity in arid regions like Saudi Arabia. This study investigates the efficacy of grafting tomatoes onto both novel and commercial rootstocks to enhance salinity tolerance and its impact on growth, physiological parameters, and yield in a soilless culture system. The experiment involved two water quality levels, 2 (S1) and 4 (S2) dS m−1, two growth media types, volcanic rock (M1) and sand (M2), and six grafting treatments: Tone Guitar F1 non-grafted (G1) (commercial scion), grafted onto itself (G2), Tone Guitar F1* Maxifort F1 (G3) (commercial rootstock), and grafting the scion onto three novel rootstocks, X-218 (G4), X-238 (G5), and Alawamiya365 (G6). Growth, physiology, photosynthetic pigments, and yield improved with lower salinity (2 dS m−1) in volcanic rock and with the grafting treatments (G2–G6) compared to the non-grafted treatment (G1). The best results were achieved with the S1M1G5 treatment, where yield increased by 53% compared to the lowest yield in non-grafted plants grown in sand under higher salinity (S2M2G1). Besides replacing the mineral fertilization, the biological nitrogen fixation promoted by bacteria from genus Bradyrhizobium provides enough nitrogen to enable high yields in the soybean crop. The objective of this study was to compare the standard inoculation of a product containing Bradyrhizobium spp., either applied alone or associated to Azospirillum brasilense, to the preinoculation by seed treatment in the plant nodulation and productivity of soybean crop grains. The trial was implanted in november, 2020 in four locations (Mandaguaçu/PR, Marialva/PR, Paranavaí/PR, and Itaquiraí/MS) with different edaphoclimatic features. The design with randomized blocks was used, with seven treatments and five repetitions. The evaluated variables were number and dry mass of nodules in the beginning of flowering, dry biomass of the aerial portion, N content and total N in the aerial portion and grains, and grain yield. The results obtained in the four tests enabled to conclude that the inoculation with Bradyrhizobium spp. + Azospirillum brasilense by seed treatment of leaf spraying with Azospirillum showed to be technically feasible in the soybean crop. Methane (CH4) emissions from wetland ecosystems are controlled by redox conditions in the soil, which are currently underrepresented in Earth system models. Plant-mediated radial oxygen loss (ROL) can increase soil O2 availability, affect local redox conditions, and cause heterogeneous distribution of redox-sensitive chemical species at the root scale, which would affect CH4 emissions integrated over larger scales. In this study, we used a subsurface geochemical simulator (PFLOTRAN) to quantify the effects of incorporating either spatially homogeneous ROL or more complex heterogeneous ROL on model predictions of porewater solute concentration depth profiles (dissolved organic carbon, methane, sulfate, sulfide) and column integrated CH4 fluxes for a tidal coastal wetland. From the heterogeneous ROL simulation, we obtained 18% higher column averaged CH4 concentration at the rooting zone but 5% lower total CH4 flux compared to simulations of the homogeneous ROL or without ROL. This difference is because lower CH4 concentrations occurred in the same rhizosphere volume that was directly connected with plant-mediated transport of CH4 from the rooting zone to the atmosphere. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the impacts of heterogeneous ROL on model predictions of porewater oxygen and sulfide concentrations will be more important under conditions of higher ROL fluxes or more heterogeneous root distribution (lower root densities). Despite the small impact on predicted CH4 emissions, the simulated ROL drastically reduced porewater concentrations of sulfide, an effective phytotoxin, indicating that incorporating ROL combined with sulfur cycling into ecosystem models could potentially improve predictions of plant productivity in coastal wetland ecosystems. Societal Impact Statement: Cultural use berries are prized foods and medicines across the United States and Canada, with almost 200 different species used by Indigenous Peoples. Berries are increasingly being impacted by environmental and land‐use change. Berry habitats, how and when berry plants reproduce, and the volume of berries available for harvest each year are shifting widely. These changes are impacting access to, availability of, and consumption of berries. Biocultural stewardship practices, like low‐intensity fire, transplanting, and thinning, can be used in response to these stressors to support berry plant health and productivity as well as a sustained relationship with this important food. Summary: Almost 200 different species of berries are used for food and medicine by Indigenous Peoples, with unparalleled nutritional and cultural significance among plant foods. Environmental and land‐use change is increasingly compromising access to, availability of, and consumption of berries. In this review, I consider (a) how climate and land‐use change are impacting cultural use berries across species and places, as documented by Indigenous Peoples and in the scientific literature, and (b) how stewardship practices are being applied to promote resilience and sustainability in berrying landscapes experiencing stress. Climate impacts on Arctic and subarctic berry species include earlier ripening, changes in taste, or increased variability in abundance. These same regions are experiencing a proliferation of shrubs, while forests throughout the lower 48 and Canada are suffering from suffocating fuel loads and stand densities that are not conducive to berry habitat for many species. In the Pacific West, berries are influenced by prolonged droughts and increasing spring and summer temperatures. Climate change impacts are amplified by shifts in land use for forestry and agriculture. Biocultural stewardship practices, like low‐intensity fire, thinning, transplanting, and cultural care, can be used to mitigate these impacts and promote berry microclimate habitats. Background: It is known that 60-80% of the population affected by various diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, and oncological diseases is associated with selenium (Se) deficiency. Therefore, enriching agricultural crops with Se is considered a current issue. Objective: This study investigates Se enrichment of Lycium barbarum (Lb) and its effectiveness in hydroponic and soil conditions in the Ararat Valley. The research focuses on the impact of adding exogenous Se on plant productivity, Se accumulation, and the content of biologically active substances (BAS) in Lb berries and leaves. Methods: The experiments were conducted from 2021 to 2023 using hydroponic and soil cultivation methods with varying Se concentrations in nutrient solutions and foliar nutrition. Results: The results demonstrate that Se enrichment significantly increased Se and BAS levels in both leaves and berries of Lb, with hydroponic cultivation exhibiting higher accumulation compared to soil conditions. Foliar feeding with a 0.005% Se solution and exogenous Se addition to nutrient solutions at 1.0 mg/L resulted in notable improvements in Se content and plant productivity. Furthermore, the analyses revealed significant differences between hydroponically and soil-grown Lb, emphasizing the potential of hydroponic cultivation for producing Seenriched plant material with enhanced BAS content. Conclusion: Hydroponic cultivation supplemented with Se and foliar nutrition is recommended for obtaining Se-rich Lb plant material, which is suitable for medicinal and functional food purposes. Fine root traits and their relationships reflect the ecological trade-off strategies of plants in resource investment and are important for understanding the life strategies and growth of plants in response to changes in the environment. We used 16-year-old Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata Lamb. Hook.) plantations with different slope positions as the research object to explore the morphological, anatomical, and chemical properties of fine roots and their relationships. With increasing root order levels, the morphological, anatomical, and chemical traits of the fine roots of Chinese fir at different slope positions showed similar change trends; however, at the same order level, the differences were large. Under the upper slope site conditions, the average diameter of the second- and third-order roots and the thickness of the third-order root cortex were the highest. However, specific surface area, vascular bundle diameter, and the ratio of third-order roots were higher under the middle-slope site conditions. Under the lower slope site conditions, the specific surface area and specific root length of first-order roots and the root ratio of second-order roots were the highest. The biomasses of the first- and third-order roots on the middle and lower slopes were higher than those on the upper slope. The contents of N and P in fine roots of grades 1–3 Chinese fir showed the order of lower slope > middle slope > upper slope; however, the changes in C/N and C/P ratios showed the opposite trend, indicating differences in the morphological, anatomical, and chemical properties as well as resource acquisition strategies of fine roots of grades 1–3 Chinese fir under different slope positions. There were negative correlations between fine root diameter, N and P contents, and specific root length, indicating an acquisition and conservative resource trade-off relationships between fine root morphological, anatomical, and chemical traits. There were also differences in the relationships between the morphological, anatomical, and chemical traits of Chinese fir fine roots at different slope positions, indicating that the relationships between these traits were affected by slope position change. Chinese fir varieties with root-foraging characteristics ranging from resource conservation to resource acquisition can be selected for planting to improve the productivity of C. lanceolata plantations. BIOCHAR and Vermicompost are non-traditional organic modifications of agricultural production used to improve crop productivity and soil fertility. Field experiments were carried out to examine the application of a combination of biochar and earthworm compost and N fertilizers to soil fertility, yield, nutrient content, and nitrogen use efficiency. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates for each treatment. Application of non-traditional organic fertilizers i.e., biochar (B), and vermicompost (V) at three rates (0,1000 and 2000 kg/ha) combined with three rates of mineral N fertilizer (0, 150, 200 kg N/ha) as ammonium sulfate (20.5% N). These results indicate that the application of earthworm compost and biochar greatly enhances recovery efficiency (R e), agricultural efficiency (A e) and nutrient content. In addition, with the addition of biochar or earthworm compost, the amount of organic matter (OM) and NPK in the soil increased, while the pH of the soil decreased further. The results showed that B2N2 treatment was the most successful in improving nutrient content and N efficiency as well and enhancing panicum plant yield. The application of earthworm compost and biochar reforming improved the productivity, nutrient content, agronomic efficiency recovery efficiency, and nitrogen use efficiency of panicum feed. An experiment was conducted in the greenhouse to investigate the feasibility of Vicia faba grown on different fly ash concentrations (0–30%) and dual inoculation with Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Sampling was done 45 days after sowing to analyse the plant growth parameters, photosynthetic attributes (total chlorophyll and carotenoids content), protein content, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content, defensive factors (antioxidant activity and proline content) and damage markers (lipid peroxidation, reactive oxygen species and cell viability). The results revealed that the application of fly ash (FA) alone did not result in any significant improvement in growth, biochemical and physiological parameters. However, dual inoculation showed a synergistic impact on legume growth, photosynthetic pigments, protein, proline, and cell viability. Rhizobium, AMF and 10% FA showed maximum enhancement in all attributes mentioned. 20% and 30% fly doses showed a reduction in growth, photosynthesis and antioxidants and caused oxidative stress via lipid peroxidation. THE PRESENT experiment was undertaken to study the behavior of titanium in soil and the effect of application methods (foliar spraying or soil injection) and TiO2 concentrations (0, 5, 7.5, and 10 ppm as nanoparticles or 25, 50, and 75 ppm as bulk particles) as well as their interaction treatments on Salvia fruticosa (three-lobed sage) plant. In most cases, the tallest plants, the maximum yield of dry herb/feddan, yield of volatile oil/feddan, values of chlorophyll, and nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium (NPK) values of Salvia fruticosa were achieved from the interaction treatment between foliar spraying and 10 ppm TiO2 nanoparticles while the main components of three-lobed sage essential oil were 1,8-cineole, camphor, α-pinene, and camphene, respectively. Also, from the sequential extraction method of Ti in soil, the highest fraction of Ti was found in residual forms at each of the treatments. This confirmed that using TiO2 (bulk or nanoparticles) in either soil or foliar application is harmless and improved chlorophyll production and consequently improved photosynthesis which leads to increased productivity of the plants under this study. Introduction: The sowing date plays a crucial role in influencing the growth and reproduction of plants, with its specific impact on biomass allocation and allometric growth remaining unclear. Understanding these effects is essential for optimizing agricultural practices and enhancing crop productivity. Methods: To investigate the effects of sowing dates on biomass allocation and allometric growth, a field experiment was conducted with sequential sowings of Fagopyrum esculentum from April 12th to August 11th in 2018. Biomass measurements were taken across various plant organs, and corresponding allocation calculations were made. A detailed analysis of the allometric growth relationship involving organ biomass variations was performed. Results: The study revealed that the accumulation and allocation of organ biomass in buckwheat were significantly impacted by the sowing dates. Delayed planting led to reduced vegetative growth and increased biomass allocation towards reproduction. Allometric parameters such as exponent, constant, and individual size of buckwheat were notably affected by delayed planting. Interestingly, the allometric exponents governing the relationships between reproductive vs. vegetative biomass and belowground vs. aboveground biomass exhibited varying trends across different sowing dates. Discussion: Notably, late sowings resulted in significantly higher reproductive biomass compared to early and middle sowings. These findings highlight the nuanced relationship between plant size and reproductive biomass under different sowing dates, emphasizing the critical role of planting timing in shaping mature plant sizes and reproductive outcomes. Drought and salinity are two abiotic stresses that affect plant productivity. We exposed 2-year-old Platycladus orientalis saplings to single and combined stress of drought and salinity. Subsequently, the responses of physiological traits and soil properties were investigated. Biochemical traits such as leaf and root phytohormone content significantly increased under most stress conditions. Single drought stress resulted in significantly decreased nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) content in stems and roots, while single salt stress and combined stress resulted in diverse response of NSC content. Xylem water potential of P. orientalis decreased significantly under both single drought and single salt stress, as well as the combined stress. Under the combined stress of drought and severe salt, xylem hydraulic conductivity significantly decreased while NSC content was unaffected, demonstrating that the risk of xylem hydraulic failure may be greater than carbon starvation. The tracheid lumen diameter and the tracheid double wall thickness of root and stem xylem was hardly affected by any stress, except for the stem tracheid lumen diameter, which was significantly increased under the combined stress. Soil ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and available potassium content was only significantly affected by single salt stress, while soil available phosphorus content was not affected by any stress. Single drought stress had a stronger effect on the alpha diversity of rhizobacteria communities, and single salt stress had a stronger effect on soil nutrient availability, while combined stress showed relatively limited effect on these soil properties. Regarding physiological traits, responses of P. orientalis saplings under single and combined stress of drought and salt were diverse, and effects of combined stress could not be directly extrapolated from any single stress. Compared to single stress, the effect of combined stress on phytohormone content and hydraulic traits was negative to P. orientalis saplings, while the combined stress offset the negative effects of single drought stress on NSC content. Our study provided more comprehensive information on the response of the physiological traits and soil properties of P. orientalis saplings under single and combined stress of drought and salt, which would be helpful to understand the adapting mechanism of woody plants to abiotic stress. The Belt and Road Initiative proposed by China has significantly increased trade in countries along the Belt and Road (B&R). Since most of these countries are developing and emerging economies, the pressure to reduce carbon emissions poses a leading challenge for them. Carbon productivity has become a key indicator for assessing the degree of low-carbon development, as it can link economic development with CO2 emission reduction. However, few studies have investigated how international trade affects carbon productivity. Based on panel data from 43 countries along the B&R during 2001–2019, this paper uses a system GMM model to explore the impact of international trade on carbon productivity. Then, we divide the 43 countries in the sample into two groups according to their income levels to compare the different effects of international trade on carbon productivity. The results show that, first, the carbon productivity of the examined B&R countries has an overall increasing trend, and there is a significant heterogeneity of carbon productivity among countries with different income levels. Second, the effects of international trade, export, and import on carbon productivity are all significantly positive, and export's effect is higher than import. In the high-income group, carbon productivity is more likely to be improved by trade than in the middle (low)-income group. Third, economic development level, urbanization, and energy productivity are positively associated with carbon productivity, while CO2 per capita and government size inhibit carbon productivity improvement. Insight into the impact of international trade on carbon productivity provides theoretical support for B&R countries to better leverage foreign trade activities to achieve a green economy. An extremely hazardous heavy metal called cadmium (Cd) is frequently released into the soil, causing a considerable reduction in plant productivity and safety. In an effort to reduce the toxicity of Cd, silicon dioxide nanoparticles were chosen because of their capability to react with metallic substances and decrease their adsorption. This study examines the processes that underlie the stress caused by Cd and how SiO2NPs may be able to lessen it through modifying antioxidant defense, oxidative stress, and photosynthesis. A 100 μM concentration of Cd stress was applied to the hydroponically grown wild rice line, and 50 μM of silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) was given. The study depicted that when 50 μM SiO2NPs was applied, there was a significant decrease in Cd uptake in both roots and shoots by 30.2% and 15.8% under 100 μM Cd stress, respectively. The results illustrated that Cd had a detrimental effect on carotenoid and chlorophyll levels and other growth-related traits. Additionally, it increased the levels of ROS in plants, which reduced the antioxidant capability by 18.8% (SOD), 39.2% (POD), 32.6% (CAT), and 25.01% (GR) in wild rice. Nevertheless, the addition of silicon dioxide nanoparticles reduced oxidative damage and the overall amount of Cd uptake, which lessened the toxicity caused by Cd. Reduced formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including MDA and H2O2, and an increased defense system of antioxidants in the plants provided evidence for this. Arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation can promote plant growth, but specific research on the difference in the symbiosis effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant combination is not yet in-depth. Therefore, this study selected Medicago sativa L., Bromus inermis Leyss, and Festuca arundinacea Schreb., which were commonly used for restoring degraded land in China to inoculate with three AMF separately, to explore the effects of different AMF inoculation on the growth performance and nutrient absorption of different plants and to provide a scientific basis for the research and development of the combination of mycorrhiza and plants. We set up four treatments with inoculation Entrophospora etunicata (EE), Funneliformis mosseae (FM), Rhizophagus intraradices (RI), and non-inoculation. The main research findings are as follows: the three AMF formed a good symbiotic relationship with the three grassland plants, with RI and FM having more significant inoculation effects on plant height, biomass, and tiller number. Compared with C, the aboveground biomass of Medicago sativa L., Bromus inermis Leyss, and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. inoculated with AMF increased by 101.30–174.29%, 51.67–74.14%, and 110.67–174.67%. AMF inoculation enhanced the plant uptake of N, P, and K, and plant P and K contents were significantly correlated with plant biomass. PLS-PM analyses of three plants all showed that AMF inoculation increased plant nutrient uptake and then increased aboveground biomass and underground biomass by increasing plant height and root tillering. This study showed that RI was a more suitable AMF for combination with grassland degradation restoration grass species and proposed the potential mechanism of AMF–plant symbiosis to increase yield. As global ecological degradation intensifies, the long-term impacts of afforestation on productivity and soil fertility in barren lands have become critical in improving global ecological security and productivity. Through meta-analysis, this study integrates data from 109 barren land afforestation sites across China, aiming to comprehensively analyze the effects on plant productivity and soil fertility while identifying the key environmental drivers of these changes. We found that afforestation consistently enhances plant productivity across 60 years. However, soil fertility and moisture initially surged significantly after afforestation but gradually declined after the first decade, indicating the limited long-term benefits. Climatic factors, namely precipitation and humidity index, are crucial in enhancing plant productivity, while geographic factors, specifically lower elevations and gentler slopes, are associated with greater increases in soil fertility. Elevation and slope are two key factors that influence soil moisture after afforestation. These findings highlight the need for ongoing soil management and ecological maintenance in afforestation projects to sustain the soil fertility benefits. Our study provides a robust scientific foundation for afforestation strategies aimed at barren land restoration and offers valuable insights for policy formulation in barren land afforestation. The rhizosphere microbiome plays a crucial role in supporting plant productivity and ecosystem functioning by regulating nutrient cycling, soil integrity, and carbon storage. However, deciphering the intricate interplay between microbial relationships within the rhizosphere is challenging due to the overwhelming taxonomic and functional diversity. Here we present our systematic design framework built on microbial colocalization and microbial interaction, toward successful assembly of multiple rhizosphere-derived Reduced Complexity Consortia (RCC). We enriched co-localized microbes from Brachypodium roots grown in field soil with carbon substrates mimicking Brachypodium root exudates, generating 768 enrichments. By transferring the enrichments every 3 or 7 days for 10 generations, we developed both fast and slow-growing reduced complexity microbial communities. Most carbon substrates led to highly stable RCC just after a few transfers. 16S rRNA gene amplicon analysis revealed distinct community compositions based on inoculum and carbon source, with complex carbon enriching slow growing yet functionally important soil taxa like Acidobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. Network analysis showed that microbial consortia, whether differentiated by growth rate (fast vs. slow) or by succession (across generations), had significantly different network centralities. Besides, the keystone taxa identified within these networks belong to genera with plant growth-promoting traits, underscoring their critical function in shaping rhizospheric microbiome networks. Furthermore, tested consortia demonstrated high stability and reproducibility, assuring successful revival from glycerol stocks for long-term viability and use. Our study represents a significant step toward developing a framework for assembling rhizosphere consortia based on microbial colocalization and interaction, with future implications for sustainable agriculture and environmental management.
