This study investigates the existence of solutions for the key plant capacity utilisation (PCU) concepts using general nonparametric technologies. This is done via a theoretical review of existing and some new PCU concepts. Focusing on short-run and long-run output-oriented, attainable output-oriented, and input-oriented PCU notions, we first investigate the existence of solutions at the firm level. Under mild axioms, this question regarding the existence of solutions for these PCU concepts at the firm level is affirmatively answered under variable and constant returns to scale as well as under convex and nonconvex assumptions. However, short-run and long-run output-oriented and attainable output-oriented PCU concepts may not be implementable depending on certain conditions. There are no such reservations for the input-oriented PCU. Then, for this same range of PCU concepts, we explore the more difficult question as to the existence of solutions at the industry level. The output-oriented and attainable output-oriented PCU exist at the industry level under strict conditions: existence and attainability are interwoven at this level. The industry input-oriented PCU is always feasible at the industry model. This theoretical review is supplemented by a semi-systematic empirical review, and an empirical application. In plant tissue culture, differences in endogenous levels of species-specific plant growth regulators (PGRs) may explain differences in regenerative capacity. In the case of polyamines (PAs), their dynamics and distribution may vary between species, genotypes, tissues, and developmental pathways, such as sexual reproduction and apomixis. In this study, for the first time, we aimed to assess the impact of varying endogenous PAs levels in seeds from distinct reproductive modes in Miconia spp. (Melastomataceae), on their in vitro regenerative capacity. We quantified the free PAs endogenous content in seeds of Miconia australis (obligate apomictic), Miconia hyemalis (facultative apomictic), and Miconia sellowiana (sexual) and evaluated their in vitro regenerative potential in WPM culture medium supplemented with a combination of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). The morphogenic responses were characterized by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and discussed regarding the endogenous PAs profiles found. Seeds of M. sellowiana presented approximately eight times more putrescine than M. australis, which was associated with a higher percentage of regenerated calluses (76.67%) than M. australis (5.56%). On the other hand, spermine levels were significantly higher in M. australis. Spermine is indicated as an inhibitor of auxin-carrying gene expression, which may have contributed to its lower regenerative capacity under the tested conditions. These findings provide important insights into in vitro morphogenesis mechanisms in Miconia and highlight the significance of endogenous PA levels in plant regeneration. The evaluation of plant growth-promoting bacteria in order to increase corn productivity is a biotechnology of global interest. This study evaluated the efficiency of the consortium between P. fluorescens CNPSo 2719(=CCTB03) and A. brasilense Ab-V06 in corn. Four experiments were carried out in four different locations, with a randomized block design and four replications, with the treatments: (1) without inoculation and without application of N coverage; (2) without inoculation and application of 100% of the recommended dose of N in coverage (200 kg ha-1 of N); (3) Azospirillum brasilense + application of 75% of the recommended dose of N in coverage (150 kg ha-1 of N); (4) bacterial consortium of Azospirillum brasilense + Pseudomonas fluorescens + application of 75% of the recommended dose of N in coverage (150 kg ha-1 of N). In all locations, with the use of the bacterial consortium (A. brasilense + P. fluorescens) + 75% of the recommended dose of N in coverage, it was possible to reduce the dose of N in coverage by up to 25% without compromising the productivity of the crop. In this way, it is concluded that the use of the consortium of the two bacteria promotes savings of up to 25% of N fertilization in top dressing and the possibility of using two microorganisms with the capacity to stimulation plant growth with a single application. Background and Aims Leaf area (A) is a crucial indicator of the photosynthetic capacity of plants. The Montgomery equation (ME), which hypothesizes that A is proportional to the product of leaf length (L) and width (W), is a valid tool for non-destructively measuring A for many broadleaved plants. At present, the methods used to compute L and W for the ME can be broadly divided into two kinds: using computer recognition and measuring manually. However, the potential difference in the prediction accuracy using either method has not been thoroughly examined in previous studies. Methods In the present study, we measured 540 Alangium chinense leaves, 489 Liquidambar formosana leaves and 215 Liriodendron  ×  sinoamericanum leaves, utilizing computer recognition and manual measurement methods to determine L and W. The ME was used to fit the data determined by the two methods, and the goodness of fits were compared. The prediction errors of A were analysed by examining the correlations with two leaf symmetry indices (areal ratio of the left side to the right side, and standardized index for bilateral asymmetry), as well as the leaf shape complexity index (the leaf dissection index). Key Results The results indicate that there is a neglectable difference in the estimation of A between the two methods. This further validates that the ME is an effective method for estimating A in broadleaved tree species, including those with lobes. Additionally, leaf shape complexity significantly influenced the estimation of A. Conclusions These results show that the use of computer recognition and manual measurement in the field are both effective and feasible, although the influence of leaf shape complexity should be considered when applying the ME to estimate A in the future. Elicitation, the process of stimulating plants to enhance the production of valuable secondary metabolites, has emerged as a significant avenue in the field of plant biotechnology. This review paper provides a comprehensive examination of elicitation, encompassing its mechanisms, the imperative for its utilization, and the diverse array of elicitors employed, including abiotic, biotic, and nanoparticle-based agents. By exploring the intricate signaling pathways and molecular responses triggered by external stimuli in this review, we gain insights into how plants tailor their metabolite production in reaction to their environment. Intricately intertwined with the mechanisms, the types of elicitors utilized are extensively discussed. Abiotic elicitors, encompassing physical factors and chemicals, biotic elicitors involving microbe-derived molecules, plant hormones and symbiotic microorganisms, and the emerging application of nanoparticles as elicitation agents are explored. The review further examines the application of these elicitors in both in-vitro and in-vivo cultures, showcasing their practical utility in controlled laboratory settings and real-world environments. By assessing the efficacy of diverse elicitors, this paper provides valuable insights into tailoring elicitation strategies to enhance secondary metabolite yields for various applications. Addressing the limitations and leveraging emerging technologies will undoubtedly steer elicitation research towards innovative breakthroughs, further enhancing our capacity to harness plants for sustainable and efficient secondary metabolite production. Andean ecosystems are characterized by high humidity, mainly from rain and fog events. Because of differences in altitude two Andean ecosystems – sub‐Andean forest and Páramo –face different environmental pressures that affect leaf anatomy and cell wall composition and, consequently, species foliar water uptake (FWU) capacity. Here, FWU capacity of eight species in the Melastomataceae was evaluated and found to be related to proportions of cell wall components and aquaporins in the two ecosystems. Cellulose was labelled with Calcofluor white, and aquaporin and pectins were labelled with monoclonal antibodies. There were differences in plant FWU capacity in both ecosystems, with higher FWU capacity in sub‐Andean forest species than in Páramo forest species. Cell wall components were positively related to FWU, with increased FWU related to pectin and aquaporin content of the plasma membrane. Differences in water availability in the two analysed environments led to differences in FWU capacity that are associated with leaf anatomical traits and cell wall composition. In these two environments, plants with similar traits are selected to respond to given environmental pressures. Heat exchanger fouling is problematic in crude oil refining, impacting energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, plant capacity, and maintenance budget. As part of the digital transformation journey at TotalEnergies and with advances in research on hydrocarbon fouling, advanced fouling monitoring and prediction tool (HTRI SmartPMTM) was implemented throughout TotalEnergies to better manage fouling in heat exchangers. The SmartPM software performs advanced data reconciliation, including simulation of detailed exchanger operational data using proprietary HTRI shell-and-tube heat exchanger calculation methods. After deployment and adoption of the software for fouling monitoring and reporting, the predictive functionalities have been applied to several feasibility studies concerning energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reduction projects. The present work describes the predictive study of the cleaning schedule of a refinery. The result of this study is an industrial project proposal on the installation of new bypasses across selected exchangers, leading to an economically optimized cleaning strategy, savings in the fuel consumption of the crude preheat furnace, and the reduction in CO2 emissions associated to its combustion. The contemporary ‘plant turn’, driven by modern scientific researches into plant potentialities and a renewed philosophical appreciation of botanical lives within Critical Plant Studies, has spurred discussions about the attribution of personhood to plants. However, anxieties subtend the notion of plant personhood, for it being predominantly anchored in an anthropocentric paradigm of autonomous and embodied ‘extrinsic’ and ‘intrinsic’ properties of plant ontology. Drawing from Indigenous Naga animist vegetal ethos and building upon the arguments of Matthew Hall and Michael Marder, the article attempts to transcend this impasse by conceptualising a neological framework of co-constitutive and reciprocal syntropic capacities as the defining elements of a non-anthropocentric vegetal personhood. Subsequently, the study employs this syntropic model of plant personhood to analyse the ethno-literary representations of vegetal agency and communication as syntropic plant capacities within the context of Indigenous Naga animist culture in two short stories from Temsula Ao’s anthology The Tombstone in My Garden (2022). On the whole, the article explores how the syntropic capacities of plants can function as a connective complement between the Western discourses of Critical Plant Studies and the Indigenous Naga animist arboreal worldviews to facilitate re-membering of an ecocentric plant personhood. Deserts are subject to significant anthropogenic pressure. The capacity to buffer against changes in the local environment and biodiversity are critical for ecosystem functioning. Foundation species can be a solution to rapidly assess ecological function and provide a simple nature‐based solution to protect against continuing biodiversity losses. A foundation species is defined as a species that exerts and promotes a positive set of processes for the biotic network. Two different shrub species in the central drylands of California were used to assay a potential buffer for plant species richness and to examine the species‐specificity of foundation facilitation. A five‐year dataset in two distinct regions differing in aridity was used to test the hypothesis that the direct effects of foundation plants facilitate other plant species and buffer diversity losses to a changing climate. The predicted positive effects of both shrub species on species richness increased with increasing local temperatures sampled. Finally, projected temperature increases for the region in trained Bayesian models demonstrated that both shrub species can profoundly increase in their capacity to facilitate plant species richness. Colloquially, this positive ecological effect can be described as the patronus charm hypothesis because regardless of the form of the protector, shrub species provided a talisman against local loss of richness driven by temperature increases. An assessment was carried out at Nuclear Technology Development Centre to evaluate the capacity of the plant species Epipremnum pinnatum to uptake, translocate and accumulate Th and U. The experiments were conducted under controlled conditions in a greenhouse, using cultivation in soil from uranium mine and cultivation in nutrient solution (hydroponic technique) using standards of the elements of interest. The plant species was analysed by Neutron Activation , k0 standardization method. The ANOVA test, R software and Tukey's correction were applied, the results of which showed that the candidate biomonitor plant presented good Th and U uptake in both experiments, indicating a preference for accumulate in the roots. The US Clean Water Act of 1972 required cities to build secondary wastewater treatment plant capacity to improve the environment and protect public health. The expansion of the Southeast Pollution Control Plant in San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point, a historically Black neighborhood, illustrates how planners employed rational-comprehensive approaches as the bases for their decision-making, worsening the community's environmental burdens. This occurred even as the community used recently adopted environmental policy frameworks to mitigate the plant's consequences. SUMMARY Stomatal pores in plant leaves mediate CO2 uptake for photosynthesis and water loss via transpiration. Altered stomatal density can affect plant photosynthetic capacity, water use efficiency, and growth, potentially providing either benefits or drawbacks depending on the environment. Here we explore, at different air humidity regimes, gas exchange, stomatal anatomy, and growth of Arabidopsis lines designed to combine increased stomatal density (epf1, epf2) with high stomatal sensitivity (ht1‐2, cyp707a1/a3). We show that the stomatal density and sensitivity traits combine as expected: higher stomatal density increases stomatal conductance, whereas the effect is smaller in the high stomatal sensitivity mutant backgrounds than in the epf1epf2 double mutant. Growth under low air humidity increases plant stomatal ratio with relatively more stomata allocated to the adaxial epidermis. Low relative air humidity and high stomatal density both independently impair plant growth. Higher evaporative demand did not punish increased stomatal density, nor did inherently low stomatal conductance provide any protection against low relative humidity. We propose that the detrimental effects of high stomatal density on plant growth at a young age are related to the cost of producing stomata; future experiments need to test if high stomatal densities might pay off in later life stages. We compare the performance of photovoltaic (PV), flat-plate and evacuated-tube solar-thermal (ST), and hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) collectors to meet the energy demands of multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination plants across four locations. We consider three scales: 1700 m3day−1, 120 m3day−1 and 3 m3day−1. We find a strong dependence of the capacity and configuration of the solar collectors on both the cost of sourcing electricity from the grid and the specific collector employed. We find specific costs as low as 7.8, 3.4 and 3.7 USDm−3 for the three plant capacities. We find that solar-driven systems optimised for the lowest specific cost result in CO2eq emissions equal to, or higher than, those from grid-driven reverse osmosis (RO) and in line with PV-RO. This highlights the need to consider the environmental footprint of these systems to ensure that desalination is in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 6. Little is known about how carbon integration and storage dynamics affect and are affected by demography in field populations. We sought to elucidate this link by examining dynamic patterns of carbon integration relative to the timing of demographically significant developmental decisions regarding shoot type determination in mayapple, Podophyllum peltatum, a clonal plant with large and persistent rhizomes. Individual rhizome systems growing in natural populations were fed 14CO2 either in late-April, early-May, or mid-June, then harvested at intervals throughout the current season and into the next. When distribution of label was examined we found that carbon fixed at different times in the growing season is used differently: April-fixed assimilate remained in the labeled shoot or was moved into the old rhizome, May-fixed assimilate was found predominantly in the old rhizome, while early-June fixed assimilate moved into the old rhizome and the extending new ramet. Movement of assimilate into the old rhizome appeared to have precedence over formation of additional new ramets. Despite significant within season changes in location of dominant sinks within rhizome systems, there was little redistribution of labeled assimilate: early fixed assimilate was not used to fuel later within season growth, however, assimilate was redistributed between seasons. Vegetative and sexual systems differed in the distribution only of April-fixed assimilate. This was observed even though early labeling occurred prior to anthesis. Sexual systems retained a greater proportion of assimilate in the stem than did vegetative ones, which exported more to the old rhizome. 14C-distribution patterns did not vary between systems differing in future demographic status suggesting that the developmental decision regarding shoot type is based on resources acquired in prior years. We explore the hypothesis that preformation and storage are functionally linked traits that permit plants to coordinate the developmental determination of structures differing in cost and demographic function with known resource status. We conclude that demography influences and is influenced by integrative physiology and that physiological restrictions on within season redistribution of assimilates constrain plants' capacities to respond to short-term environmental variation. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTVesicular sequestration is a potential strategy for enhancing plant tolerance to cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As). In this study, the ectopic overexpression of yeast-derived ScSMF2 in Arabidopsis thaliana was found to enhance the accumulation and tolerance of Cd and As in transgenic plants. ScSMF2 was localized on vacuole membranes and formed puncta structures in plant cells when agro-infiltrated for transient expression. Transgenic Arabidopsis showed less retardation on root elongation and shoot weight and more accumulation of Cd, As (III) and As (V) when cultured on medium containing Cd or As. Overexpression of ScSMF2 promoted accumulation of Cd and arsenic in transgenic Arabidopsis, which were over twice higher than in WT plants when cultured in soil. This study provides insights into the mechanisms involved in the vesicular sequestration of heavy metals in plant and presents a potential strategy for enhancing the phytoremediation capacity of plants toward heavy metals.Ectopic overexpression of the yeast Mn2+ transporter SMF2 in Arabidopsis thaliana substantially boosts the accumulation and tolerance to Cd and As in plants. This augmentation is attributed to the enhanced efficacy of intracellular vesicle sequestration, thereby bolstering the capacity of plants to sequester and detoxify these toxic heavy metals. This investigation introduces a potential approach for cultivating plants with improved phytoremediation capabilities, thereby advancing eco-friendly and sustainable remediation initiatives against heavy metal pollution. Maximal sunlight intensity varies diurnally due to the earth's rotation. Whether this slow diurnal pattern influences the photoprotective capacity of plants throughout the day is unknown. We investigated diurnal variation in NPQ, along with NPQ capacity, induction, and relaxation kinetics after transitions to high light, in tomato plants grown under diurnal parabolic (DP) or constant (DC) light intensity regimes. DP light intensity peaked at midday (470 μmol m‐2 s‐1) while DC stayed constant at 300 μmol m‐2 s‐1 at a similar 12‐hour photoperiod and daily light integral. NPQs were higher in the morning and afternoon at lower light intensities in DP compared to DC, except shortly after dawn. NPQ capacity increased from midday to the end of the day, with higher values in DP than in DC. At high light ΦPSII did not vary throughout the day, while ΦNPQ varied consistently with NPQ capacity. Reduced ΦNO suggested less susceptibility to photodamage at the end of the day. NPQ induction was faster at midday than at the start of the day and in DC than in DP, with overshoot occurring in the morning and midday but not at the end of the day. NPQ relaxation was faster in DP than in DC. The xanthophyll de‐epoxidation state and reduced demand for photochemistry could not explain the observed diurnal variations in photoprotective capacity. In conclusion, this study showed diurnal variation in regulated photoprotective capacity at moderate growth light intensity, which was not explained by instantaneous light intensity or increasing photoinhibition over the day and was influenced by acclimation to constant light intensity. Edible seaweed - Caulerpa lentillifera is being cultivated along the coast of Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam, and makes a relatively large contribution to the economic development of this region. Bacterial strains originating from marine sources such as those associated with seaweed and hard coral were screened for properties of promote plant growth with the capacity of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) - a phytohormone belonging to auxin group, the phosphate solubilization ability and antibacterial activity of IAA-producing strains were also performed in this study. Robust strains were identified by morphological methods with biochemical tests and analysis of 16s RNA sequences. Isolate RN06 produced high amounts of IAA, utilized inorganic phosphate, and inhibited Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, Escherichia coli 0157, and Serratia marcescens PDL100. The IAA producer HRA5 isolated from hard coral demonstrated the ability to solubilize phosphate and exhibited antibacterial activity against B. subtilis. Morphological analysis and 16sRNA sequencing showed that isolate RN06 was the closest strain to Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and HRA5 was linked to Pseudomonas sp. This is the first report of isolated bacteria from seaweed and corals from the Vietnamese sea served as potential strains for further research of the application of biological inoculants specifically for seaweed farming. Advances in manufacturing technology coupled with the increased potency of new biotherapeutic modalities have created an external environment where continuous manufacturing (CM) can address a growing need. Amgen has successfully implemented a hybrid CM process for a commercial lifecycle program. In this process, the bioreactor, harvest, capture column, and viral inactivation/depth filtration unit operations were integrated together in an automated, continuous module, while the remaining downstream unit operations took place in stand‐alone batch mode. CM operations are particularly suited for so‐called "high mix, low volume" manufacturing plants, where a variety of molecules are manufactured in relatively low volumes. The selected molecule fit this mold and was manufactured in a low‐capital micro‐footprint suite attached to an existing therapeutic production facility. Use of a hybrid process within an already operating facility required less capital and minimized complexity. To enable this hybrid CM process, an established fed‐batch process was converted to a perfusion process with continuous harvest. Development efforts included both process changes and the generation of a novel cell line adapted to long‐term perfusion. Chromatography resins were updated, and purification processes adapted to handle variable inputs due to the fluctuations in harvest titer from the lengthy production process. A novel automated single‐use (SU) viral inactivation (VI) skid was introduced, which entailed the development of a robust pH verification and alarm system, along with procedures for product isolation to allow discard of specific cycles. The CM process demonstrated consistent performance, meaning it met predefined performance criteria (including product quality attributes, or PQAs) when operated within established process parameters and manufactured according to applicable procedures. Using a 75% reduction in scale, it resulted in a five‐fold reduction in process media and buffer usage, a fifteen‐fold increase in mass per thaw, and an overall process productivity increase of 45‐fold (as measured by grams drug substance per liter per day.) The hybrid CM process also enabled increased material demand to be met with no change in cost of goods manufactured or plant capacity, due to the repurposing of existing facility space and the flexible duration of the hybrid CM harvest. Elucidating changes in the structure and function of plant communities along different elevation ranges will help researchers to analyze the strategies plant communities use in environments and processes influencing niche differentiation. The aims of this paper are to reveal the underlying mechanisms and ecological processes governing the development of subtropical forest ecosystem plant communities. This paper analyzes the forest vegetation of the Wuyi Mountains across the following three elevation ranges: low elevation, mid elevation, and high elevation, spanning from 560 to 2150 m. Twenty and twenty-three dominant tree and shrub layer species, respectively, were identified based on their importance values, and their niches and species associations were further analyzed based on the elevation range. The results showed interspecific associations between tree and shrub species, with the strongest associations observed at mid-elevations. The analysis of niche width and overlap showed that the number of pairs of species with a higher degree of niche overlap decreased with increasing elevation, suggesting that resource use varied at different elevations for both tree and shrub layer species, which may be related to the adaptive capacity of plants at different elevations to the environment and resource use strategies. Metal contamination in soil poses a significant environmental concern worldwide, necessitating effective remediation strategies such as phytoremediation. The present study investigated the effects of EDTA dosage (1.5 and 3 mmol kg−1) and two Trichoderma species (T. harzianum and T. aureoviride) on copper (Cu) content and growth of maize plants grown in a Cu-contaminated soil, as well as Cu fractionation in the soil. In the absence of EDTA, only inoculation with T. harzianum led to a significant increase in shoot biomass. Combining fungal inoculum with EDTA only yielded a significant increase in shoot biomass when using T. aureoviride at a low EDTA rate, highlighting the interplay between fungal species and EDTA rates on plant growth. Results also indicated that EDTA application increased Cu bioavailability, enhancing Cu dissolution and root (not shoot) Cu concentrations. Conversely, inoculation with both Trichoderma species reduced Cu mobility and bioavailability in soil, thereby decreasing the shoot Cu concentrations of plants. When combined with EDTA, only application of T. harzianum resulted in an enhanced shoot Cu concentration, whereas combined application of T. aureoviride and EDTA did not make a significant change compared to the corresponding control (no fungal inoculation, no EDTA), possibly due to a lower compatibility of the T. aureoviride isolate with EDTA. Our results demonstrated that EDTA application, in both non-inoculated and inoculated treatments, increased Cu availability by facilitating its redistribution and transformation from less plant-available fractions (residual, Fe/Mn oxide-bound, and carbonate-bound) to the more readily plant-available forms (water-soluble and exchangeable fractions). In conclusion, although individual Trichoderma application proved beneficial for phytostabilization by reducing Cu content and mitigating Cu toxicity in plants, the combined application of EDTA and a compatible Trichoderma isolate (here, the T. harzianum isolate) holds promise for enhancing the phytoextraction capacity of plants. Although using maize has the advantage of being a food crop, to optimize phytoextraction, plant species with superior metal tolerance and phytoextraction capabilities should be selected, exceeding those of maize. The United States hydropower fleet has faced increasing environmental and regulatory pressures over the last half century, potentially constraining total generation. Here we show that annual capacity factor has declined at four fifths of United States hydropower plants since 1980, with two thirds of decreasing trends significant at p < 0.05. Results are based on an analysis of annual energy generation totals and nameplate capacities for 610 plants (>5 megawatt), representing 87% of total conventional hydropower capacity in the United States. On aggregate, changes in capacity factor imply a fleetwide, cumulative generation decrease of 23% since 1980 before factoring in capacity upgrades—akin to retiring a Hoover Dam once every two to three years. Changes in water availability explain energy decline in only 21% of plants, highlighting the importance of non-climatic drivers of generation, including deterioration of plant equipment as well as changes to dam operations in support of nonpower objectives. Accurate prediction of energy consumption in district heating systems plays an important role in supporting effective and clean energy production and distribution in dense urban areas. Predictive models are needed for flexible and cost-effective operation of energy production and usage, e.g., using peak shaving or load shifting to compensate for heat losses in the pipeline. This helps to avoid exceedance of power plant capacity. The purpose of this study is to automate the process of building machine learning (ML) models to solve a short-term power demand prediction problem. The dataset contains a district heating network's measured hourly power consumption and ambient temperature for 415 days. In this paper, we propose a hybrid evolutionary-based algorithm, named GA-SHADE, for the simultaneous optimization of ML models and feature selection. The GA-SHADE algorithm is a hybrid algorithm consisting of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and success-history-based parameter adaptation for differential evolution (SHADE). The results of the numerical experiments show that the proposed GA-SHADE algorithm allows the identification of simplified ML models with good prediction performance in terms of the optimized feature subset and model hyperparameters. The main contributions of the study are (1) using the proposed GA-SHADE, ML models with varying numbers of features and performance are obtained. (2) The proposed GA-SHADE algorithm self-adapts during operation and has only one control parameter. There is no fine-tuning required before execution. (3) Due to the evolutionary nature of the algorithm, it is not sensitive to the number of features and hyperparameters to be optimized in ML models. In conclusion, this study confirms that each optimized ML model uses a unique set and number of features. Out of the six ML models considered, SVR and NN are better candidates and have demonstrated the best performance across several metrics. Background and Aims. Salt exclusion is an important attribute for wine grapes since many countries have limits to the concentration of sodium (Na+) and/or chloride (Cl−) tolerated in wine. The aim was to investigate whole plant capacity for Na+ and Cl‾ exclusion and the within-plant partitioning of accumulated ions to better understand these important salt tolerance traits. Methods and Results. Rooted cuttings of 140 Ruggeri and K51-40 (good and poor shoot Cl− excluders, respectively) and five hybrids from a cross between the two genotypes were used. When challenged with salinity, 140 Ruggeri limited the accumulation of Cl− and Na+ in the stem, petioles, and laminae and had a significantly lower whole plant concentration of Cl− and Na+ when compared to K51-40. The latter indicates that 140 Ruggeri accumulates less Cl− and Na+ than K51-40 by a lower uptake or a potentially greater efflux by roots, or both. While K51-40 accumulated significantly more Na+, it was able to retrieve it from the xylem; store it in the roots, stem, and petiole; and keep the lamina concentration comparable to that of 140 Ruggeri. Petioles of all genotypes appeared to play a role in limiting Cl− accumulation in laminae and particularly for K51-40, to limit Na+ accumulation in laminae. Conclusions. The grapevine capacity for Cl− and Na+ exclusion can be defined primarily as the lower net accumulation on a whole plant basis, reflecting the difference between the uptake and any efflux that may occur. Lower root to shoot transport is a key factor in shoot Cl− and Na+ exclusion. Petiole accumulation assists in limiting the Cl− and Na+ accumulation in the laminae. Significance of the Study. The study addressed the knowledge gap by examining Cl− and Na+ exclusion on a whole plant basis, highlighting a range of within-plant mechanisms that act in limiting the accumulation of both ions in the laminae. The post-column reaction method enables the evaluation of the antiradical capacity of individual components in a mixture by separating the components using HPLC and measuring stable free radical (e.g., DPPH●) scavenging that occurs after the chromatography column. The equipment typically consists of two detectors. The first records signals of the analytes leaving the column. The second records radical scavenging by the analytes, which appears as a negative band. The recorded signals are found on two separate chromatograms, which must be combined to interpret the results. In this study, a single DAD detector was used behind the post-column reactor, enabling the simultaneous recording of the analyte bands and negative signals, indicating radical scavenging. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antiradical capacity of key compounds found in two herbal raw materials used in traditional Chinese medicine. Saposhnikovia divaricata roots contain phenolic acids, chromones, and furanocoumarins. Chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, and imperatorin demonstrated strong radical scavenging, while prim-O-glucoslocimifugin showed a weaker response, both in standards and in root extracts. However, scavenging was not observed for cimifugin and 4′-O-β-D-glucosyl-5-O-methylvisamminol. Astragalus mongholicus roots contain astragalosides I-IV (triterpene saponins). The purpose of this review was to survey the recent applications of the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique in the assessment of mobility and bioavailability of nutrients and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in agricultural soil. Many studies compared the capabilities of the DGT technique with those of classical soil chemical extractants used in single or sequential procedures to predict nutrients and PTE bioavailability to crops. In most of the published works, the DGT technique was reported to be superior to the conventional chemical extraction and fractionation methods in obtaining significant correlations with the metals and metalloids accumulated in crops. In the domain of nutrient bioavailability assessment, DGT-based studies focused mainly on phosphorous and selenium labile fraction measurement, but potassium, manganese, and nitrogen were also studied using the DGT tool. Different DGT configurations are reported, using binding and diffusive layers specific for certain analytes (Hg, P, and Se) or gels with wider applicability, such as Chelex-based binding gels for metal cations and ferrihydrite-based hydrogels for oxyanions. Overall, the literature demonstrates that the DGT technique is relevant for the evaluation of metal and nutrient bioavailability to crops, due to its capacity to mimic the plant root uptake process, which justifies future improvement efforts. This study aims to conduct resource assessments at five offshore locations (L1–L5) in the Gulf of South Suez for possible development of wind farms. For this purpose, the hourly mean wind speed and direction data at 100 m above mean sea level (AMSL) and other meteorological data at near water surface from ERA5 (fifth-generation reanalysis for the global climate weather) is used. Statistical analyses, wind power, energy estimation, plant capacity factor, etc., have been performed using Windographer software. The cost of energy and greenhouse gas emissions are conducted based on international installation cost per kW and emissions factor per kWh from the literature. The data covers 43 years, between 1979 and 2021. The results show that at L1 to L5 locations, the long-term mean wind speed (WS) and wind power density (WPD) values are 8.678 m/s and 533 W/m2, 4.371 m/s and 78 W/m2, 8.917 m/s and 587 W/m2, 7.856 m/s and 406 W/m2, 8.072 m/s and 453 W/m2, and 7.876 m/s and 406 W/m2 at 100 m ASL, respectively. Based on the site-specific parameters (WS, WPD, WPC, MWVI, MWSI, AWVI, AWSI, minimum zero power, maximum rated power, PCF, COE, and maximum wind duration), values of 8.917 m/s, 587 W/m2, 1.125, 34.92, 0.358, 101.9, 6.26%, 5.76%, 54.04%, 0.007 USD/kWh, and 91%; L2 are identified as the most relevant area for wind farm development among the studied locations. This work investigates the decarbonization potential of large-scale implementation of BECCS (in the form of biomass co-firing and post-combustion amine-based CO2 capture) in over 150 existing coal-fired power plants in China, combining GIS-based geospatial analysis of biomass availability from agricultural residues and modelling of the techno-environmental performance of the retrofitted power plants. Using a 500-m resolution map of cropland in China, the availability of residual biomass at a radius of 25–100 km from each power plant is estimated. The biomass yield is then matched with the required input for a set of co-firing scenarios, identified by the optimal mix of different co-firing ratios (10%, 25%, and 40%) and increasing % of total plant's capacity to be retrofitted with the chosen BECCS system. Power generation performance and required biomass for the retrofitted plants are modelled in the Integrated Environmental Control Model (IECM). According to the results, the total decarbonization potential of the modelled large-scale implementation of BECCS ranges from 0.3 to 1.8 Gt CO2/yr (15–81% of BAU emissions), depending on the biomass collection radius. The Chinese provinces of Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Henan have the most potential for BECCS implementation, while coal-rich regions (e.g. Inner Mongolia) or highly developed coastal areas (Guangdong, Zhejiang) are constrained by local biomass availability. Overall, this work demonstrates the significant potential of the sustainable large-scale implementation of BECCS in China and provides suggestions to policymakers to include this technology in the portfolio of solutions towards carbon neutrality. Drought stress (DS) is one of the important abiotic stresses facing cash crops today. Drought can reduce plant growth and development, inhibit photosynthesis, and thus reduce plant yield. In this experiment, we investigated the protective mechanism of AMF on plant photosynthetic system by inoculating Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis(P.py) with a clumping mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) under drought conditions. The drought environment was maintained by weighing AMF plants and non-AMF plants. The relative water content (RWC) of plant leaves was measured to determine its drought effect. DS decreased the RWC of plants, but AMF was able to increase the RWC of plants. chlorophyll a fluorescence curve measurements revealed that DS increased the OKJIP curve of plants, but AMF was able to reduce this trend, indicating that AMF increased the light absorption capacity of plants. DS also caused a decrease in plant Y(I) and Y(II). ETRI and ETRII, and increased Y(NO) and Y(NA) in plants, indicating that DS caused photosystem damage in plants. For the same host, different AMFs did not help to the same extent, but all AMFs were able to help plants reduce this damage and contribute to the increase of plant photosynthesis under normal water conditions. Summary: Global agriculture faces increasing pressure to produce more food with fewer resources. Drought, exacerbated by climate change, is a major agricultural constraint costing the industry an estimated US$80 billion per year in lost production. Wild relatives of domesticated crops, including wheat (Triticum spp.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), are an underutilized source of drought tolerance genes. However, managing their undesirable characteristics, assessing drought responses, and selecting lines with heritable traits remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a novel strategy of using multi‐trait selection criteria based on high‐throughput spectral images to facilitate the assessment and selection challenge. The importance of measuring plant capacity for sustained carbon fixation under drought stress is explored, and an image‐based transpiration efficiency (iTE) index obtained via a combination of hyperspectral and thermal imaging, is proposed. Incorporating iTE along with other drought‐related variables in selection criteria will allow the identification of accessions with diverse tolerance mechanisms. A comprehensive approach that merges high‐throughput phenotyping and de novo domestication is proposed for developing drought‐tolerant prebreeding material and providing breeders with access to gene pools containing unexplored drought tolerance mechanisms. Seed germination is a vital process, yet extremely sensitive to salinity. This is particularly true for coastal halophytes like the annual oilseed species Cakile maritima, which faces the simultaneous impact of wind, saltspray and seawater inundations in its natural biotopes. At the early developmental stages, this may jeopardize seed germination, plant establishment capacity and hence its development and persistence. Osmopriming is a pre-sowing approach aiming to improve seedling emergence and establishment in adverse environments. Here, we investigate the effect of proline (at 0, 1, 5, and 20 mM) pre-treatment on salt tolerance of C. maritima at the juvenile stage under salinity (0, 100, and 200 mM NaCl). Proline seed priming enhanced the germination rate (28% to 92%) and promoted seedling establishment of C. maritima by stimulating a-amylase activity even at the highest salinity (+55 %). Besides, after transfer of non-germinated seeds on distilled water, salt impact was fully reversible. At the seedling stage, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters showed that this osmoticum increased the maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and the quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion [Y(II)]. In contrast, the quantum yield of nonregulated nonphotochemical energy dissipation [Y(NO)] and the quantum yield of regulated nonphotochemical energy dissipation [Y(NPQ)], which might be correlated to the mitigation of the salt deleterious effects on PSII. Proline and carbohydrate concentrations also increased following priming. Around 65% of the mitigation needed for the targeted net-zero carbon aviation emissions in 2050 is expected to come from Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). In this study, an alternative gasification-driven Biomass-to-Liquid (BtL) concept for the production of SAFs is introduced and evaluated. In particular, a fuel synthesis scheme based on the double-stage fermentation of the produced syngas (syngas → acetic acid → TAGs) is assessed instead of the conventional Fischer-Tropsch (FT) or Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) synthesis. The objective of the present work is the techno-economic evaluation of a large-scale (200 MWth) replication of the mentioned BtL concept, whose performance has been simulated in Aspen PlusTM (V.11) with reasonable upscaling considerations and models validated at a pilot scale. The estimated baseline Total Capital Investment (TCI) of €577 million lies in the typical range of €500–700 million that many recent techno-economic studies adopt for gasification-driven BtL plants of similar capacity, while the estimated annual operating costs of €50 million correspond to a 15–40% OpEx reduction compared to such plants. A discounted cash flow analysis was carried out, and a baseline Minimum Jet Selling Price (MJSP) equal to 1.83 €/L was calculated, while a range of 1.38–2.27 €/L emerged from the sensitivity analysis. This study sets the biological conversion of gasification-derived syngas into triglycerides (TAGs) as a promising alternative route for the production of SAFs. In general, gasification-driven BtL pathways, led by the relatively mature FT and AtJ technologies, are capable of thriving in the coming years based on their capability of advanced feedstock flexibility. Magnesium plays a crucial role in plant physiological processes. However, the specific mechanisms underlying the response of tea plants to altered magnesium nutrition under acid stress remain unclear. This study investigates how root environment acidification impacts tea seedlings and the role of magnesium (Mg) in mitigating these effects. We examine varying pH and Mg levels' influence on tea seedlings' resistance to abiotic stress, focusing on antioxidant capacity and nutritional content. In a hydroponic experiment, we varied root pH (3.5, 5.0, 6.5) and Mg concentrations (0.01, 0.4, 0.8 mM), assessing parameters like antioxidant capacity, peroxidative damage, and nutritional content at 1, 7, 15, and 30 days post treatment. Root environment acidification and Mg deficiency worsened peroxidative damage in tea plant leaves and roots. Increased Mg supplementation enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity, reducing malondialdehyde and mitigating oxidative damage from root environment acid stress. Under acid stress, 0.8 mM Mg significantly increased tea leaf polyphenols, amino acids, and water-soluble extracts. Mg notably boosted chlorophyll content, surpassing lower Mg levels at pH 5. Additionally, Mg reversed root vitality inhibition induced by acid stress, leading to increased nitrogen, potassium, and Mg concentrations in leaves, promoting balanced nutrient absorption. Mg supplementation is crucial for enhancing tea plant antioxidant capacity, alleviating growth inhibition from root-environment acid stress, and improving chlorophyll content and root vitality, highlighting Mg's significance in tea cultivation and broader agricultural practices. The layout of multiple natural draft dry cooling towers could have a significant influence on the performance of the cooling system in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants; however, this has never been quantified. Hence, this work used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to analyze the cooling capacity of two short natural draft dry cooling towers (NDDCTs) on a common site for a range of tower spacings, wind-speeds, and wind incidence angles. The results show that the cooling performance of the towers is a strong function of tower spacing and their orientation with respect to the wind direction. It was found that when the wind came at a 90-deg wind incidence angle (i.e., normal to a line drawn between the two towers), their cooling capacity was improved at tower spacings of less than 1.8 tower diameters (1.8D), though for the other tower spacings, there was no interaction between the towers. However, with the wind at 45 deg to the towers, the flow around the towers resulted in a decrease in their cooling capacity at tower spacings of 1.8D and 2.6D. Most interestingly, it was found that orienting the towers in line with the prevailing wind direction delivered improvements in the cooling capacity of up to 30%. This is due to the windward tower acting as a passive windbreak. Hence, as CSP plant capacity is increased, and additional cooling towers are required, these should be placed close to any existing tower and oriented along the line of the prevailing winds. Considering Malaysia's position as a leading producer of palm oil, it wastes appears to be a promising renewable energy source. Thus, present work compares optimal behavioural performance and power generation potential from the palm oil mill wastes, including empty fruit bunch (EFB) and palm kernel shell (PKS). Aspen Plus software is used to perform a sensitivity study, investigating the influence of temperature and equivalence ratio (ER) on syngas output, syngas composition, and power generation. Temperature increase (600◦C to 1000◦C) leads to increase in H2 and CO and decrease in CO2 and CH4 composition. At optimal operating condition, temperature for EFB and PKS is at 740◦C and 865◦C while ER is at 0.25 for both feedstocks. The low heating value (LHV), cold gas efficiency (CGE) and total syngas output happens to be around 4.84 MJ/Nm3, 48.89% and 259.18 kg/hr for (EFB and 4.01 MJ/Nm3, 51.27 % and 312.97 kg/h for PKS. EFB shows higher capability to produce more quality syngas and generate more power compared to PKS. Anaerobic gut fungi (AGF, Neocallimastigomycota) reside in the alimentary tract of herbivores. While their presence in mammals is well documented, evidence for their occurrence in non-mammalian hosts is currently sparse. Culture-independent surveys of AGF in tortoises identified a unique community, with three novel deep-branching genera representing >90% of sequences in most samples. Representatives of all genera were successfully isolated under strict anaerobic conditions. Transcriptomics-enabled phylogenomic and molecular dating analyses indicated an ancient, deep-branching position in the AGF tree for these genera, with an evolutionary divergence time estimate of 104-112 million years ago (Mya). Such estimates push the establishment of animal-Neocallimastigomycota symbiosis from the late to the early Cretaceous. Further, tortoise-associated isolates (T-AGF) exhibited limited capacity for plant polysaccharides metabolism and lacked genes encoding several carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) families. Finally, we demonstrate that the observed curtailed degradation capacities and reduced CAZyme repertoire is driven by the paucity of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in T-AGF genomes, compared to their mammalian counterparts. This reduced capacity was reflected in an altered cellulosomal production capacity in T-AGF. Our findings provide insights into the phylogenetic diversity, ecological distribution, evolutionary history, evolution of fungal-host nutritional symbiosis, and dynamics of genes acquisition in Neocallimastigomycota. A monitoring system is needed to determine the performance of an off-grid solar power plant. This paper presents a monitoring system design for an off-grid solar power plant with a capacity of 4 kWp. This off-grid solar power plant system was built on campus 2 of Institut Teknologi Nasional Malang. The purpose of a monitoring system is to collect and present information systematically about the state of the off-grid solar power plant system. This information can be accessed anywhere and anytime by users. Hardware used includes SPM91 to read energy meters digitally, PZEM-017 as a Modbus-based measuring instrument, and communication devices to send data to a database server. The monitoring system dashboard was built using Haiwell SCADA software. The result was a monitoring system that can display parameter data, data loggers, and graphs of the condition of the off-grid solar power plant. The PZEM-017 has an accuracy rate of 99.48% for voltage readings and 98.76% for current readings. Major latex proteins, or MLPs, are crucial to plants' capacity to grow, develop, and endure biotic and abiotic stresses. The MLP gene family has been found in numerous plants, but little is known about its role in Populus simonii × P. nigra. This study discovered and assessed 43 PtMLP genes that were unevenly dispersed throughout 12 chromosomes in terms of their physicochemical characteristics, gene structure, conserved motifs, and protein localization. Based on their phylogeny and protein structural characteristics, three separate subclasses of PtMLP family were identified. Segmental and tandem duplication were found to be essential variables in the expansion of the PtMLP genes. The involvement of the PtMLP genes in growth and development, as well as in the responses to different hormones and stresses, was demonstrated by cis-regulatory element prediction. The PtMLP genes showed varying expression patterns in various tissues and under different conditions (cold, salt, and drought stress), as demonstrated in RNA-Seq databases, suggesting that PsnMLP may have different functions. Following the further investigation of the genes demonstrating notable variations in expression before and after the application of three stresses, PsnMLP5 was identified as a candidate gene. Subsequent studies revealed that PsnMLP5 could be induced by ABA treatment. This study paves the way for further investigations into the MLP genes' functional mechanisms in response to abiotic stressors, as well as the ways in which they can be utilized in poplar breeding for improved stress tolerance. Numerous studies have attempted to pinpoint certain traits of rice varieties linked with great ratooning ability that may be used in cultural practice. However, both genetic and environmental variables affect rice's capacity for ratooning. We are able to measure the innovative ratooning ability that affects the decline in ratoon yield using the agronomic features of the main crop and ratoon rice in our global database for a meta‐analysis, drawn from 51 experiments in 14 countries. We discovered that changes in cultivar yield and maturity features, cropping location, and nitrogen fertilizer treatment may all affect a plant's capacity to tiller. On the other hand, the growth duration ratoon ability was less responsive to variations in cultivars and cropping location. We also found that ratooning changes the plant architecture for yield generation from bigger spikelets with fewer panicles to fewer spikelets (dropping 48%) with larger panicles (increasing 19%). We came to the conclusion based on our research that the decreased yield in ratoon crops may be caused by fast ear emergence and aggressive tillering, which negatively influence stem elongation, panicle differentiation, and a lack of nutrition, resulting in fewer spikelets (panicle−1). The present data are thoroughly summarized and analyzed in this research, which also clarifies the lack of knowledge around the characteristics that affect ratoon rice crop production. The safety of workers and equipment in the power grid requires the shutdown of power plants in case of maintenance or malfunction. The shutdown relies on protective devices that must be properly coordinated to isolate only the part of the grid affected by the malfunction. Using the DIgSILENT PowerFactory software, an analysis was conducted on a model of an accurate real grid integrating a photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of 390 kW. Protection coordination testing was carried out for three-phase, two-phase, and single-phase short circuit currents at arbitrarily selected locations at medium and low voltage levels. Protection in the time domain is coordinated on lines and busbars to determine the speed and selectivity of protective devices. The analysis results indicate that adequately adjusting the three-phase short circuit at the main transformer output 110/10 kV with an impedance of 0 O and an allowed protection operation time of up to two seconds can be correctly addressed within 36.7 ms. The escalating global capacity of desalination plants has posed a significant environmental threat due to the discharge of brine. Consequently, urgent treatment of these hypersaline brines has become imperative. This article provides an overview of a novel hybrid model for water desalination. Energy consumption and brine discharge of three desalination configurations, namely freeze desalination (FD), multi‐effect desalination (MED), and reverse osmosis (RO), are compared. The configurations encompass FD, MED‐FD, and RO‐MED‐FD, with FD utilizing the brine from MED and RO desalination. The hybrid desalination system integrates with combined power and cooling CO2 system (CPCS‐CO2) for energy supply. This hybridization offers enhanced operational flexibility, increased desalination capacity, and reduced brine discharge. Optimal gas heater pressure exists for different temperatures and salt concentrations in saline water. The findings demonstrate a noteworthy 47% and 50% reduction in energy consumption and brine discharge, respectively, in RO‐MED‐FD compared to simple FD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant functional traits reflect the capacity of plants to adapt to their environment and the underlying optimization mechanisms. However, few studies have investigated trade-off strategies for functional traits in desert-wetland ecosystems, the mechanisms by which surface water disturbance and groundwater depth drive functional trait variation at the community scale, and the roles of intraspecific and interspecific variation. Therefore, this study analyzed specific differences in community-weighted mean traits among habitat types and obtained the relative contribution of intraspecific and interspecific variation by decomposing communityweighted mean traits, focusing on the Daliyabuyi Oasis in the hinterland of the Taklamakan Desert. We also explored the mechanisms by which surface water and groundwater influence different sources of variability specifically. The results showed that plant height, relative chlorophyll content, leaf thickness, leaf nitrogen content, and nitrogen-phosphorus ratio were the key traits reflecting habitat differences. As the groundwater depth becomes shallower and surface water disturbance intensifies, plant communities tend to have higher leaf nitrogen content, nitrogenphosphorus ratio, and relative chlorophyll content and lower height. Surface water, groundwater, soil water content, and total soil nitrogen can influence interspecific and intraspecific variation in these traits through direct and indirect effects. As arid to wet habitats change, plant trade-off strategies for resources will shift from conservative to acquisitive. The study concluded that community functional traits are mainly contributed by interspecific variation, but consideration of intraspecific variation and the covariation effects that exist between it and interspecific variation can help to further enhance the understanding of the response of community traits in desert-wetland ecosystems to environmental change. Supply chain network design (SCND) problems are essential in formulating strategic decisions on the number of facilities, network facility location, and plant capacity, to ensure the optimal delivery of products from manufacturers to end consumers. On the other hand, assembly line balancing (ALB) problems provide details on operational decisions which encompass production levels and inventories and therefore should be flexible enough to react when changes in resource availability and product demands occur. This study develops a novel combination of these independent problems as a multi-objective SCND-ALB problem which considers economic, environmental, and social objectives in determining the optimal design and operational conditions of the supply chain which consists of U-shaped assembly lines. Furthermore, the normal type belief degree-based uncertainty is considered to reflect the uncertainty of the parameters of the problem. The uncertain formulation is crisped using two different approaches. Then, two multi-objective solution approaches of the literature such as TH and GCM approaches are considered to simultaneously account for the three sustainability objectives of the obtained crisp multi-objective formulations. Finally, a numerical example is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the problem in detail. Furthermore, several test problems are used to compare the performance of the solution approaches. Current rates of climate change are exceeding the capacity of many plant species to track climate, thus leading communities to be in disequilibrium with climatic conditions. Plant canopies can contribute to this disequilibrium by buffering macro‐climatic conditions and sheltering poorly adapted species to the oncoming climate, particularly in their recruitment stages. Here we analyse differences in climatic disequilibrium between understorey and open ground woody plant recruits in 28 localities, covering more than 100,000 m2, across an elevation range embedding temperature and aridity gradients in the southern Iberian Peninsula. This study demonstrates higher climatic disequilibrium under canopies compared with open ground, supporting that plant canopies would affect future community climatic lags by allowing the recruitment of less arid‐adapted species in warm and dry conditions, but also it endorse that canopies could favour warm‐adapted species in extremely cold environments as mountain tops, thus pre‐adapting communities living in these habitats to climate change. Surface hazards can form hazard cascades which expand their reach. However, our understanding of their complex dynamics and ability to mitigate their impacts remain limited. In 2018, two landslides dammed the Jinsha River in the Tibetan plateau and formed landslide‐dammed lakes. Subsequent dam breaches prompted the evacuation of >120,000 people. An early warning system for floods using a regional seismic network has been proposed on the basis of catastrophic floods having been detected ∼100 km away, with seismic energy proportional to discharge. Surprisingly, we find that this catastrophic outburst flood was undetectable beyond a few kilometers, with peak seismic energy preceding peak discharge. We propose that river channel stability also controls seismic energy generation and should be considered for accurate monitoring of catastrophic floods. In contrast, we find that the various processes during dam breach can be well‐characterized seismically further away and provide warning ∼60 min before discharge exceeds monsoon flood levels. We also show that numerical modeling of dam breaches which typically lacks in situ measurements can benefit from incorporating seismic data as constraints. Finally, we show that this event drastically increased sediment fluxes ∼670 km downstream for years and may significantly reduce the capacity of hydropower plants. Our results reveal ways to improve early warning of catastrophic outburst floods and the need to consider surface hazards' long‐term impact when managing infrastructure in mountainous regions. To meet the requirements of developing high head and huge capacity hydropower plants, this paper proposes a new Pelton turbine that joints three runners by one vertical shaft to have a rated head of 1 000 m and a single unit capacity close to 800 MW. The design concept of increasing capacity by increasing the number of runners and the structural components of the new turbine-generator unit are explained, the theoretical design parameters of the runner are calculated and presented, the performance characteristics and the flow patterns in runner and casing are predicted and optimized by CFD simulation. The results show that the rated operating efficiency of the turbine can reach 87%, and the operating characteristic curves are smooth for different heads and outputs, the water splashing interference in the casing is an important factor affecting the efficiency of the turbine. By optimizing the layout of the runners and nozzles in the casing to suppress the splashing interference, the efficiency level, torque oscillation, and operation stability of the Pelton turbine can be improved. This preliminary attempt has demonstrated the feasibility of the concept and also found the importance of optimizing the water splashing in the casing, which has reference values for further researches. This contribution focuses on extending the current state of the art in a central resource allocation planning model known under the name of the short-run Johansen industry model in three ways. First, we correct a long-standing issue of the correct choice of weight variables on the capacity distribution by guaranteeing that these weights determine production combinations that belong to the production technology on which the plant capacity estimates are based in the first place. Second, we exploit the gap between average practice and best practice models by introducing an efficiency improvement imperative that allows for partial technical inefficiency when planning. Third, instead of only considering output-oriented plant capacity, we allow for alternative plant capacity concepts. In particular, we introduce an input-oriented plant capacity concept, and an alternative attainable output-oriented plant capacity concept that corrects a major empirical issue in the traditional output-oriented plant capacity notion. These methodological refinements are illustrated with a data set on U.S. fishing vessels by developing a planning model to curb overfishing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
