Abstract

DarkSide-20k (DS-20k) is a dark matter detection experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. It utilises ~100 t of low radioactivity argon from an underground source (UAr) in its inner detector, with half serving as target in a dual-phase time projection chamber (TPC). The UAr cryogenics system must maintain stable thermodynamic conditions throughout the experiment's lifetime of >10 years. Continuous removal of impurities and radon from the UAr is essential for maximising signal yield and mitigating background. We are developing an efficient and powerful cryogenics system with a gas purification loop with a target circulation rate of 1000 slpm. Central to its design is a condenser operated with liquid nitrogen which is paired with a gas heat exchanger cascade, delivering a combined cooling power of >8 kW. Here we present the design choices in view of the DS-20k requirements, in particular the condenser's working principle and the cooling control, and we show test results obtained with a dedicated benchmarking platform at CERN and LNGS. We find that the thermal efficiency of the recirculation loop, defined in terms of nitrogen consumption per argon flow rate, is 95 % and the pressure in the test cryostat can be maintained within $\pm$(0.1-0.2) mbar. We further detail a 5-day cool-down procedure of the test cryostat, maintaining a cooling rate typically within -2 K/h, as required for the DS-20k inner detector. Additionally, we assess the circuit's flow resistance, and the heat transfer capabilities of two heat exchanger geometries for argon phase change, used to provide gas for recirculation. We conclude by discussing how our findings influence the finalisation of the system design, including necessary modifications to meet requirements and ongoing testing activities., Comment: 45 pages, 24 figures

Abstract

The dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber is presently one of the leading technologies to search for dark matter particles with masses below 10 GeV/c$^2$. This was demonstrated by the DarkSide-50 experiment with approximately 50 kg of low-radioactivity liquid argon as target material. The next generation experiment DarkSide-20k, currently under construction, will use 1,000 times more argon and is expected to start operation in 2027. Based on the DarkSide-50 experience, here we assess the DarkSide-20k sensitivity to models predicting light dark matter particles, including Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and sub-GeV/c$^2$ particles interacting with electrons in argon atoms. With one year of data, a sensitivity improvement to dark matter interaction cross-sections by at least one order of magnitude with respect to DarkSide-50 is expected for all these models. A sensitivity to WIMP--nucleon interaction cross-sections below $1\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$ is achievable for WIMP masses above 800 MeV/c$^2$. With 10 years exposure, the neutrino fog can be reached for WIMP masses around 5 GeV/c$^2$., Comment: submitted to Nature Communications

Abstract

Experiments aimed at direct searches for WIMP dark matter require highly effective reduction of backgrounds and control of any residual radioactive contamination. In particular, neutrons interacting with atomic nuclei represent an important class of backgrounds due to the expected similarity of a WIMP-nucleon interaction, so that such experiments often feature a dedicated neutron detector surrounding the active target volume. In the context of the development of DarkSide-20k detector at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), several R&D projects were conceived and developed for the creation of a new hybrid material rich in both hydrogen and gadolinium nuclei to be employed as an essential element of the neutron detector. Thanks to its very high cross-section for neutron capture, gadolinium is one of the most widely used elements in neutron detectors, while the hydrogen-rich material is instrumental in efficiently moderating the neutrons. In this paper results from one of the R&Ds are presented. In this effort the new hybrid material was obtained as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, loaded with gadolinium oxide in the form of nanoparticles. We describe its realization, including all phases of design, purification, construction, characterization, and determination of mechanical properties of the new material.

Abstract

Context. The detection of NH2CH2CH2OH (ethanolamine) in molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027 adds an additional player to the prebiotic molecules discovered so far in the interstellar medium (ISM). As this molecule might be formed through condensed-phase hydrogenation steps, detecting one or more of the molecules involved might help to elucidate the chemical pathway leading to its production. Aims. The chemical path involves the formation of four chemical species. In this work, we study the energies of the isomers involved, indicate the best candidates for detection purposes, and provide the distortion constants of the most energetically favoured isomers undetected so far. Methods. We used highly accurate CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pCVTZ-F12 computations to predict the lowest energy isomers as well as their spectroscopic constants, taking corrections for core electron correlation and scalar relativity into account. Results. We studied 14 isomers. We find that the lowest energy isomer proposed in previous studies is not the actual minimum. We provide a set of rotational and distortion constants of the two new most stable isomers together with their fundamental vibrational frequencies in order to guide the search for these important astrochemical precursors of prebiotic molecules in the ISM.

Abstract

The direct search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) is performed by detecting nuclear recoils (NR) produced in a target material from the WIMP elastic scattering. A promising experimental strategy for direct dark matter search employs argon dual-phase time projection chambers (TPC). One of the advantages of the TPC is the capability to detect both the scintillation and charge signals produced by NRs. Furthermore, the existence of a drift electric field in the TPC breaks the rotational symmetry: the angle between the drift field and the momentum of the recoiling nucleus can potentially affect the charge recombination probability in liquid argon and then the relative balance between the two signal channels. This fact could make the detector sensitive to the directionality of the WIMP-induced signal, enabling unmistakable annual and daily modulation signatures for future searches aiming for discovery. The Recoil Directionality (ReD) experiment was designed to probe for such directional sensitivity. The TPC of ReD was irradiated with neutrons at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, and data were taken with 72 keV NRs of known recoil directions. The direction-dependent liquid argon charge recombination model by Cataudella et al. was adopted and a likelihood statistical analysis was performed, which gave no indications of significant dependence of the detector response to the recoil direction. The aspect ratio R of the initial ionization cloud is estimated to be 1.037 +/- 0.027 and the upper limit is R < 1.072 with 90% confidence level, Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Eur. Abstract

Dark matter lighter than 10 GeV/c$^2$ encompasses a promising range of candidates. A conceptual design for a new detector, DarkSide-LowMass, is presented, based on the DarkSide-50 detector and progress toward DarkSide-20k, optimized for a low-threshold electron-counting measurement. Sensitivity to light dark matter is explored for various potential energy thresholds and background rates. These studies show that DarkSide-LowMass can achieve sensitivity to light dark matter down to the solar neutrino floor for GeV-scale masses and significant sensitivity down to 10 MeV/c$^2$ considering the Migdal effect or interactions with electrons. Requirements for optimizing the detector's sensitivity are explored, as are potential sensitivity gains from modeling and mitigating spurious electron backgrounds that may dominate the signal at the lowest energies.

Abstract

There is today ample evidence that academic achievement depends on individual disparities in socioeconomic status (SES), working memory (WM) and academic self-concept (ASC). However, because these factors were investigated intensively but in separate fields of research in the past four to six decades, their relationships remain largely unknown. The present study investigated whether SES, WM and ASC interact with each other or represent independent contributions to academic achievement in 2379 adolescents in middle and high schools. The findings confirmed previous results showing that students with lower SES, lower WM and lower ASC perform less well on academic tests. Above all, they revealed subtle patterns of mediating processes. Specifically, individual differences in WM processing, and to a lesser extent in ASC, accounted for most part of the negative impact of low SES on academic achievement. These findings indicate that being a member of disadvantaged groups impair both WM processing and ASC and provide a clearer picture of the complex involvements of socioeconomic, cognitive and self-perception factors in academic achievement.

Abstract

In the absence of laboratory data, state-of-the-art quantum chemical approaches can provide estimates of the binding energy (BE) of interstellar species with grains. Without BE values, contemporary astrochemical models are compelled to utilize wild guesses, often delivering misleading information. Here, we employed a fully quantum chemical approach to estimate the BE of seven diatomic radicals – CH, NH, OH, SH, CN, NS, and NO – that play a crucial role in shaping the interstellar chemical composition, using a suitable amorphous solid water model as a substrate since water is the principal constituent of interstellar ice in dense and shielded regions. While the BEs are compatible with physisorption, the binding of CH in some sites shows chemisorption, in which a chemical bond to an oxygen atom of a water molecule is formed. While no structural change has been observed for the CN radical, it is believed that the formation of a hemibonded system between the outer layer of the water cluster and the radical is the reason for the unusually large BE in one of the binding sites considered in our study. A significantly lower BE for NO, consistent with recent calculations, is obtained, which helps explain the recently observed HONO/NH2OH and HONO/HNO ratios in the low-mass hot corino IRAS 16293–2422 B with chemical models. Abstract

In the direct searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) as Dark Matter candidates, the sensitivity of the detector to the incom- ing particle direction could provide a smoking gun signature for an interesting event. The SCENE collaboration firstly suggested the possible directional de- pendence of a dual-phase argon Time Projection Chamber through the columnar recombination effect. The Recoil Directionality project (ReD) within the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration aims to characterize the light and charge re- sponse of a liquid Argon dual-phase TPC to neutron-induced nuclear recoils to probe for the hint by SCENE. In this work, the directional sensitivity of the de- tector in the energy range of interest for WIMPs (20-100 keV) is investigated with a data-driven analysis involving a Machine Learning algorithm.

Abstract

The Aria cryogenic distillation plant, located in Sardinia, Italy, is a key component of the DarkSide-20k experimental program for WIMP dark matter searches at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. Aria is designed to purify the argon, extracted from underground wells in Colorado, USA, and used as the DarkSide-20k target material, to detector-grade quality. In this paper, we report the first measurement of argon isotopic separation by distillation with the 26 m tall Aria prototype. We discuss the measurement of the operating parameters of the column and the observation of the simultaneous separation of the three stable argon isotopes: $${}^{36}\hbox {Ar}$$ 36 Ar , $${}^{38}\textrm{Ar}$$ 38 Ar , and $${}^{40}\textrm{Ar}$$ 40 Ar . We also provide a detailed comparison of the experimental results with commercial process simulation software. This measurement of isotopic separation of argon is a significant achievement for the project, building on the success of the initial demonstration of isotopic separation of nitrogen using the same equipment in 2019.

Abstract

Este estudio revisa el discurso de pensadores y pensadoras locales de territorios estuariales donde residen comunidades indígenas y chilenas enfrentadas a fuerte presiones externas. El contenido de estos discursos, influido por la ecología histórica que ha moldeado el paisaje, representa un soporte teórico para nuevas prácticas democráticas que resisten la fragmentación impuesta. La tarea de articular y enunciar estos contenidos recae en intelectuales que contribuyen a la creación de un sentido común que reclama soberanía local. En la construcción de esta subjetividad cabe un papel significativo a las mujeres fruto del vínculo de residencia que establece con el medio y del carácter transitivo que tienen en la comunidad. En este artículo se subraya: (a) La autoría de un sentido común que se propaga en el territorio a través de las pr��cticas organizativas de sus habitantes, (b) La importancia que la ecología histórica tiene en la determinación de los discursos locales, y (c) El incipiente desarrollo de formas de soberanía local asociadas a la constitución y defensa de los paisajes que sirven de soporte a la vida social.The aim of the present study was to analyse and interpret the discourses of local thinkers of estuarine territories inhabited by indigenous and Chilean communities faced with strong external pressures. The contents of these discourses, influenced by the historical ecology that has shaped the landscape, represent a framework for new democratic practices that resist the fragmentation imposed by external agencies. The task of articulating and enunciating these contents rely on intellectuals, who contribute to the creation of a common sense that claims local sovereignty. Due to their relation to the land and to their intermediary position in the community, women have a meaningful role in the construction of that common sense. This article emphasizes: (a) The authorship of a common sense that propagates in the territory through the organizational practices of its inhabitants, (b) The importance of the historical ecology in the determination of the local discourses, and (c) The incipient development of forms of local sovereignty associated with the constitution and defense of a landscape that sustains social life.

Un domo de obsidiana negra de composición riolítica aflora entre otras rocas volcánicas en la latitud 38.97716° sur y longitud 71.63528° oeste, en los Nevados de Sollipulli, al oeste del Volcán Sollipulli y al sur del pueblo de Melipeuco en el centro-sur de Chile. Se encuentran fragmentos trabajados de esta misma obsidiana en la superficie de varios sitios arqueológicos de la zona. Esta obsidiana es distinguible visual y químicamente de la obsidiana translúcida gris-verdosa derivada del Volcán Chaitén situado más al sur en la cadena Andina.A dome of black rhyolite obsidian outcrops among other volcanic rocks at south latitude 38.97716° and west longitude 71.63528°, within the Nevados de Sollipulli, west of the Sollipulli volcano and south of the town of Melipeuco in south-central Chile. Worked fragments of this same obsidian are found at the surface in a number of archaeological sites in the área. This obsidian is both visually and chemically distinct from translucent grey-green derived from the Chaitén volcano further south in the Andean chain.

Abstract

We searched for shocked carbon chain chemistry (SCCC) sources with C3S abundances surpassing those of HC5N toward the dark cloud L1251, using the Effelsberg telescope at the K band (18-26 GHz). L1251-1 and L1251-3 are identified as the most promising SCCC sources. The two sources harbor young stellar objects. We conducted mapping observations toward L1251-A, the western tail of L1251, at lambda similar to 3 mm with the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m and the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescopes in lines of C2H, N2H+, CS, HCO+, SO, HC3N, and (CO)-O-18 as well as in CO 3-2 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The spectral data were combined with archival data including Spitzer and Herschel continuum maps for further analysis. Filamentary substructures labeled as F1-F6 were extracted in L1251, with F1 being associated with L1251-A hosting L1251-1. The peak positions of dense gas traced by HCO+ are misaligned relative to those of the dust clumps. Episodic outflows are common in this region. The twisted morphology of F1 and velocity distribution along L1251-A may originate from stellar feedback. SCCC in L1251-1 may have been caused by outflow activities originated from the infrared source IRS1. The signposts of ongoing SCCC and the broadened line widths of C3S and C4H in L1251-1 as well as the distribution of HC3N are also related to outflow activities in this region. L1251-1 (IRS1) together with the previously identified SCCC source IRS3 demonstrate that L1251-A is an excellent region to study SCCC.

Abstract

A systematic approach was used to study and compare the bonding of an ethylene-octene random copolymer and a low-density polymer, injection molded over polypropylene homopolymer. Wide ranges of overmolding and cooling interface temperatures and packing pressures were explored. Standard peeling tests were conducted at room temperature on overmolded samples, to measure the bonding strength. Large differences were found for bonding strength for both ethylene-based polymers, which are explained on a molecular basis. The analysis of the experimental results gives strong indications about the bonding mechanism and the temperatures and time scale involved in the process. Abstract

Los progresivos cambios desde un enfoque disciplinar a uno sistémico implica el desafío de profundizar en la articulación de avances provenientes de diversas disciplinas que coexisten en un territorio común. De allí es que el plantear el reordenamiento territorial de las preexistencias y sus problemas se traduce en un desafío disciplinar que implica focalizar la gobernanza de territorios urbanos a escala local de manera de encontrar aquellas variables irreductibles que permitan rehabilitar comunidades en progresivo deterioro, profundizar en estrategias de regeneración del tejido social vulnerado y proponer directrices de trabajo validadas desde la praxis de manera de disminuir la incertidumbre actual en la toma de decisiones a escala local. Solo de esta manera, se puede lograr avances efectivos en la sustentabilidad urbana. La experiencia chilena del Programa de Rehabilitación de Barrios, desarrollada durante la última década por el Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo, desde la condición base de vulnerabilidad permite reconocer aspectos esenciales en la dimensión política del Ordenamiento Territorial. The progressive changes from a disciplinary approach to a systemic one imply the challenge of deepening the articulation of advances coming from diverse disciplines that coexist in a common territory. Proposing territorial restructuring of the pre-existences and their problems means a disciplinary challenge that implies focusing the governance of urban territories at a local level in order to find those irreducible variables that allow the rehabilitation of communities in progressive deterioration, to deepen strategies of regeneration of the damaged social structure, and to propose work guidelines validated from the praxis in order to reduce the current uncertainty in decision making at the local level. Only in this way can effective progress be made in urban sustainability. The Chilean experience of the Neighborhood Rehabilitation Program developed during the last decade by the Housing and Urban Development Department, from the base condition of vulnerability allows to recognize essential aspects in the political dimension of Land-use Planning. Abstract

The aqueous phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of furfuryl alcohol over Cu/MgAl and Cu/ZnAl catalysts with different Mg/Al and Zn/ Al molar ratios, were investigated. Mg-Al and Zn-Al mixed oxides derived from hydrotalcites precursors were used as supports, which were impregnated with an aqueous solution of copper nitrate by incipient wetness impregnation. The HDO reaction was carried out in a typical batch reactor at 5 MPa of H2 and 200 °C for 4 h. Among the catalysts studied, the Cu/MgAl-0.5 catalyst exhibited the higher furfuryl alcohol conversion (86 %) and yield of cyclopentanol (35 %), which is the reaction product with the highest hydrogen-carbon (H/C) ratio. With the Cu/MgAl-3 catalyst a high cyclopentanone yield (67 %) was achieved. The results obtained, showed that copper supported on mixed oxides catalysts derived from hydrotalcite precursors are a promising alternative to improve the bio-oil quality. RESUMEN Se investigó la hidrodesoxigenación(HDO) del furfuril alcohol sobre catalizadores de Cu/MgAl y Cu/ZnAl con diferentes relaciones molares Mg/Al y Zn/Al. Óxidos mixtos de Mg-Al y Zn-Al derivados de precursores tipo hidrotalcitas se usaron como soporte, los cuales fueron impregnados con una solución acuosa de nitrato de cobre, mediante el método de impregnación húmeda. La reacción de hidrodesoxigenación (HDO) se realizó en un reactor tipo batch a 5 MPa de H2 y 200 °C por 4 h. Entre los catalizadores estudiados, el catalizador de Cu/MgAl-0.5 exhibió la más alta conversión del furfuril alcohol (86 %) y rendimiento hacia ciclopentanol (35 %), el cual es el producto de reacción con mayor relación hidrógeno-carbono (H/C). Con el catalizador de Cu/MgAl-3 se logró un alto rendimiento hacia ciclopentanona (67 %). Los resultados obtenidos, mostraron que los catalizadores de óxidos mixtos derivados de precursores tipo hidrotalcitas son una alternativa prometedora para mejorar las características del bio-oil.

Abstract

Quoi de commun entre un carré de chocolat, une séance de strip-tease et un billet de 100 € ? Peu de choses à première vue… sinon que ces stimuli sont considérés par la plupart des individus comme plaisants, et constituent à ce titre des « récompenses », au sens défini par les psychologues. Depuis les expériences de Pavlov à la fin du xixe siècle, les mécanismes cognitifs sous-tendant l’approche et la réception des récompenses ont fait l’objet de nombreuses études en psychologie et en neurosciences. Si le terme d’encodage neuronal convient pour évoquer le rôle du cerveau dans l’interprétation de certaines propriétés des récompenses (comme leur nature ou leur probabilité), nous avons montré que le concept de représentation est néanmoins indispensable pour décrire d’autres propriétés plus complexes comme la valeur hédonique de ces récompenses.
