PurposeThe introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has had a substantial influence on the retail industry. However, AI adoption entails considerable responsibilities and risks for senior managers. In this study, the authors developed an evaluation and selection mechanism for successful AI technology adoption in the retail industry. The multifaceted measurement and identification of critical factors (CFs) can enable retailers to adopt AI technology effectively and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage.Design/methodology/approachThe evaluation and adoption of organisational AI technology involve multifaceted decision-making for management. Therefore, the authors used the analytic network process to develop an AI evaluation framework for calculating the weight and importance of each consideration. An expert questionnaire survey was distributed to senior retail managers and 17 valid responses were obtained. Finally, the Vlse Kriterijumska Optimizacija Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method was used to identify CFs for AI adoption.FindingsThe results revealed five CFs for AI adoption in the retail industry. The findings indicated that after AI adoption, top retail management is most concerned with factors pertaining to business performance and minor concerned about the internal system's functional efficiency. Retailers pay more attention to technology and organisation context, which are matters under the retailers' control, than to external uncontrollable environmental factors.Originality/valueThe authors developed an evaluation framework and identified CFs for AI technology adoption in the retail industry. In terms of practical application, the results of this study can help AI service providers understand the CFs of retailers when adopting AI. Moreover, retailers can use the proposed multifaceted evaluation framework to guide their adoption of AI technology.

Purpose Internet-based business-to-business electronic procurement (B2B e-procurement) systems are rapidly becoming the primary platform for interorganizational transactions and the delivery of products and services in the travel and tourism industries. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the critical success factors (CSFs) and implementation strategies for B2B e-procurement systems in travel agency supply chains. Design/methodology/approach This study developed a multifaceted evaluation framework that draws on the relevant literature and the technology–organization–environment framework. The CSFs underlying B2B e-procurement adoption were identified using hybrid criteria decision-making methods. Purposive sampling was used, and 49 valid questionnaires were obtained from retail travel agencies in Taiwan. Findings The results reveal that the top four CSFs are system stability, system reliability, sales dynamics and product line availability. By focusing on these CSFs, travel wholesalers can most effectively allocate their limited resources to provide an extensive range of products and services to their clients, improve e-procurement services and enhance interorganizational collaboration in travel agency supply chains. Originality/value This study developed a multifaceted evaluation framework and identified four CSFs to assist in the adoption of B2B e-procurement systems in travel agency supply chains.

In this study, we explore the needs of different valuable customer groups for service quality and how limited resources are allocated to enhance service quality. Accordingly, we propose a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tool that uses fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE) in combination with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to help companies enhance understanding of quantitative data (the weights of the factors that affect service quality) and qualitative information to identify valuable customers. Fifty-three experts and 304 consumers at convenience stores (CVS) comprise the data set. We employed the AHP to obtain index weights in the second step of FSE and conducted FSE to determine the importance of various valuable customer groups. The results demonstrate that different valuable customer groups have dissimilar perceptions and feelings about service quality. The findings indicate that customers between “20 to 29 years old” are the most valuable customer group and that most consumers do not care much about “problem solving”. The analysis is distinct from extant work in that it examines the effect of receiving service quality from a consumer viewpoint, as we conducted a comprehensive analysis from both customer and expert perspectives.

Background: This study was designed to identify the potential predictors of postoperative velopharyngeal function after double opposing Z-plasty (DOZP) for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) in patients who had prior palatoplasty for cleft palate. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of consecutive patients who received DOZP for VPI after receiving a prior palatoplasty treating cleft palate between 2004 and 2017. The speech outcome of patient was measured using the Pittsburgh Weighted Speech Scale (PWSS) at 6 months following surgery and determined the outcome suggests velopharyngeal competence (PWSS ≤2) or incompetence (PWSS >2). Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify the variables for the prediction of competent surgical outcome. The specific receiver operating characteristic curves with an area under the curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the predictor related to the surgical outcome as competence. Results: The study included 93 patients. Age, relative velar length, velar lengthening, and closure pattern were not significantly associated with postoperative competence status of the patient. The only variable that predicted a successful surgical outcome was preoperative velar closing ratio. However, the accuracy of velar closing ratio in predicting a competent surgical outcome is only moderate (AUC = 70.37). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that preoperative velar closing ratio may predict, with moderate accuracy, a successful surgical outcome in patients with postpalatoplasty VPI who undergo DOZP. Therefore, in patients with a low preoperative velar closing ratio, some alternative surgical methods other than DOZP may be considered to avoid unsatisfactory surgical outcome.

Michelia balansae var. balansae (Aug. Candolle) Dandy is a timber and spices species in Magnoliaceae, native to China and Vietnam. In this paper, the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) and basic annotated information were reported and its phylogenetic relationship with other species in Magnoliaceae was analyzed. The size of chloroplast genome of M. balansae var. balansae is 160,134 bp, which exhibited a typical quadripartite structure comprising a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,161 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,845 bp separated by a pair identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,564 bp each. The chloroplast genome contains 131 genes, including 86 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 37 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and 8 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that M. balansae var. balansae is most affinal to M. montana and they form a nomophyletic group with other 14 Michelia species. This Michelia clade is sister to the Aromadendron clade with high support. All genera mentioned in this analysis are nomophyletic under the system of Magnoliaceae by Sima and Lu.

Healthy aging is a new challenge for the world. Therefore, health literacy education is a key issue in the current health care field. This research has developed a robot-assisted learning system to explore the possibility of significantly improving health literacy and learning perception through interaction with robots. In particular, this study adopted an experimental design, in which the experiment lasted for 90 min. A total of 60 participants over the age of 50 were randomly assigned to different learning modes. The RobotLS group learned by interacting with robots, while the VideoLS group watched health education videos on a tablet computer. The content dealt with hypertension related issues. This study used the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16), Health Knowledge Questionnaire, Reduced Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (RIMMS), and Flow Scale as evaluation tools. The result shows no significant difference in the pre-test scores between the two groups. Compared with the video-assisted learning system, the robot-assisted learning system can significantly improve health knowledge, health literacy, learning motivation, and flow perception. According to the findings of this study, a robot-assisted learning system can be introduced in the future into homes and care institutions to enhance the health literacy of the elderly.

The joint scheduling of quay cranes (QCs), yard cranes (YCs), and yard trucks (YTs) is critical to achieving good overall performance for a container terminal. However, there are only a few such integrated studies. Especially, those who have taken the vessel stowage plan (VSP) into consideration are very rare. The VSP is a plan assigning each container a stowage position in a vessel. It affects the QC operations directly and considerably. Neglecting this plan will cause problems when loading/unloading containers into/from a ship or even congest the YT and YC operations in the upstream. In this research, a framework of simulation-based optimization methods have been proposed firstly. Then, four kinds of heuristics/metaheuristics has been employed in this framework, such as sort-by-bay (SBB), genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and multiple groups particle swarm optimization (MGPSO), to deal with the yard crane scheduling problem (YCSP), yard truck scheduling problem (YTSP), and quay crane scheduling problem (QCSP) simultaneously for export containers, taking operational constraints into consideration. The objective aims to minimize makespan. Each of the simulation-based optimization methods includes three components, load-balancing heuristic, sequencing method, and simulation model. Experiments have been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different simulation-based optimization methods. The results show that the MGPSO outperforms the others.

Michelia champaca var. champaca is an ornamentally important tree in Magnoliaceae. The paper reported the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) of M. champaca var. champaca and its basic annotated information. The size of cpDNA is 160,008 bp, with a typical quadripartite structure of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,037 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,809 bp separated by a pair identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,581 bp each. The genome contained 131 genes (113 unique), including 86 protein-coding genes (80 unique), 37 tRNA genes (29 unique), and eight rRNA genes (four unique). Phylogenetic analysis showed that M. champaca var. champaca is affinal to M. baillonii and they form a nomophyletic group with other eight Michelia species. This Michelia clade is sister to the Aromadendron cathcartii clade with high support. All genera mentioned in this analysis are nomophyletic under the system of Magnoliaceae by Sima and Lu.

Lirianthe hodgsonii is a tree species of Magnoliaceae as least concern. In the present paper, the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) and basic annotated information of L. hodgsonii were reported and its phylogenetic relationship with other species in Magnoliaceae was analyzed. The size of its complete cpDNA is 159,693 bp, with a typical quadripartite structure comprising a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,546 bp, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,848 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,753 bp. The genome contains 131 unique genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that L. hodgsonii is affinal to Lirianthe bidoupensis and they form a monophyletic group with other seven Lirianthe species. This Lirianthe clade is sister to the Dugandiodendron and Talauma clade with high support. All genera mentioned in this analysis are monophyletic under the system of Magnoliaceae by Sima and Lu.

Lirianthe coco (Loureiro) N. H. Xia & C. Y. Wu is a popular ornamental species of Magnoliaceae. In the present study, the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) of L. coco was sequenced, assembled, and analyzed. The results indicated that the size of chloroplast genome of L. coco is 159,828 bp, which exhibits a typical quadripartite structure including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,958 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,768 bp separated by a pair of identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,551 bp each. The genome contained 131 genes (113 unique), including 86 protein-coding genes (80 unique), 37 tRNA genes (29 unique), and 8 rRNA genes (4 unique). Phylogenetic analysis showed that L. coco is affinal to L. odoratissima and forms a nomophyletic group with the latter and L. delavayi.

Purpose A better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms in treatment failure of bevacizumab (BEV) for malignant glioma would contribute to overcome therapeutic resistance. Methods Here, we used a quantitative proteomic method to identify molecular signatures of glioblastoma cell after BEV treatment by two-dimensional liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis and 6-plex iTRAQ quantification. Next, the function of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP), one of the most significantly affected proteins by drug treatment, was evaluated in drug resistance of glioma cells by invasion assays and animal xenograft assays. Target molecules bound by CIRP were determined using RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation and microarray analysis. Then, these mRNAs were identified by quantitative real-time PCR. Results Eighty-seven proteins were identified with significant fold changes. The biological functional analysis indicated that most of the proteins were involved in the process of cellular signal transduction, cell adhesion, and protein transport. The expression of CIRP greatly decreased after BEV treatment, and ectopic expression of CIRP abolished cell migration in BEV-treated glioma cells. In addition, CIRP could bind mRNA of CXCL12 and inhibit BEV-induced increase of CXCL12 in glioma cells. Conclusion These data suggested that CIRP may take part in BEV-induced migration of gliomas by binding of migration-relative RNAs.

Today, over 80% of global trade is seaborne. In a world of global supply chains and complex industrial development processes, seaports and port operators play an integral role of utmost importance and act as an incentive to the development of the marine economy and particularly, the national economy in general. Most importantly, the supply chain and demand shocks of Covid-19 on container ports and the container shipping industry have intensified competition among terminal operators. Thus, it is imperative that managers evaluate competitiveness by measuring their past and current performance efficiency indexes. In so doing, we present a hybrid data envelopment analysis (DEA) model that combines the DEA Malmquist method and the epsilon-based measure (EBM) for the first time to address the issue of performance evaluation of seaport terminal operators. The applicability of the proposed hybrid approach is illustrated with a case study of the top 14 seaport companies in Vietnam. First, the Malmquist model is used to assess the total productivity growth rates of the companies, and its decomposition into technical efficiency change (catch-up) and technological investment (frontier-shift). Second, the EBM model is used to calculate the efficiency and inefficiency score of each company. Besides indicating the best-performing companies from certain aspects during the research period (2015–2020), the results reflect that the gap of applying the EBM method in the field of the maritime industry was successfully addressed, and together with the Malmquist model, the integrated framework can be an effective and equitable evaluation model for any area. Furthermore, the managerial implication provides a useful guideline for practitioners in the maritime sector in improving their operational efficacy and helps customers in selecting the best seaport companies in the outsourcing strategy.

Dredged soil from river and lake is a typical silty soft soil, which has a high potential for farmland utilization. However, the newly dredged soil generally has high water content and poor engineering properties, therefore, it must be dehydrated and solidified before utilization. The traditional dehydration and solidification methods have disadvantages such as high energy consumption and secondary pollution risk. A method of soil solidification and amelioration by using plants is explored in this research. Four species of Pennisetum hydridum, Sorghum bicolor × Sorghum sudanense, Typha angustifolia, and Zea mays, were used as the research objects, planted in silty soft soil. The solidification and amelioration effects of different plants were studied by observing the changes in soil mechanics and physicochemical properties before and after the experiment. The results showed that: all the four tested species showed soil solidification effects in different degrees, the Pennisetum hydridum with 0.5m planting distance showed the best effect. The four tested species increased the soil organic matter content in varying degrees, among which the mix-planting of Pennisetum hydridum and Typha angustifolia showed the best effect. Pennisetum hydridum can increase the soil alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen(AH-N) content, Typha angustifolia can simultaneously increase the soil available phosphorus and available potassium content. In addition, the four tested species showed varying degrees of amelioration effects on physical properties. The Pennisetum hydridum shows the best amelioration effect, followed by Sorghum bicolor × Sorghum sudanense. In summary, it is feasible to use plants to solidify and ameliorate silt soft soil, which is beneficial to realize the resource utilization of dredged soil, especially suitable for agricultural land use.
