Objective: To address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its relevant political climate on college-level international students in the United States. Participants: International students aged 18 years and older in the San Francisco Bay Area. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey using PHQ-9 and the GAD-7. Results: The prevalence of depression and anxiety significantly decreased during the last two weeks from the survey completion in April or May in 2021 (Time 2) as compared to the two weeks after the July 6th policy directive in 2020 (Time 1). However, both depression severity, 2.172 (95% CI: 1.900, 2.445), and anxiety severity, 1.897 (95% CI: 1.655, 2.138), during Time 2 were still mild, indicating the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had still negatively impacted their mental health status. Conclusions: Future research can expand the target population and analyze the long-term effects of policy changes and disease outbreaks on international students in the United States. Background: The global health burden has surged due to a significant rise in anxiety and depression cases. In India, pandemic-related factors caused an increase in depression and anxiety levels. Various studies highlight the lifetime prevalence of these mental health disorders. It is essential to identify and monitor depression and anxiety symptoms in individuals across age groups. This study aims to gain insight into anxiety and depression prevalence by utilizing Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess symptoms and their correlation with age and gender. Methods: A total of 136 individuals, both male and female, completed PHQ-9 and GAD-7 in a self-report format. Informed consent was obtained from each participant prior to their participation in the research. Data was collected and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Charts and graphs aided data interpretation. Conclusion: Results revealed correlations between age and anxiety or depression severity. Younger age groups consistently reported higher symptom levels than older individuals. Objective: Depression is the most commonly observed psychological manifestation experienced by individuals diagnosed with cancer. The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between levels of IL-4, BDNF, neopterin, and depressive symptoms in lymphoma patients receiving consecutive cycles of chemotherapy. Methods: Newly diagnosed lymphoma patients scheduled to receive R-CHOP chemotherapy were enrolled. Effects of R-CHOP on circulatory biomarkers and depressive symptoms were assessed at three-time points [baseline assessment 7 days before the first dose of chemotherapy (TP1), interim assessment after the third cycle of chemotherapy (TP2), and follow-up assessment after the 6th cycle of chemotherapy (TP3)]. Results: Seventy lymphoma patients, with a mean age of 44.17 ± 13.67 years, were enrolled. Patients receiving R-CHOP were found significantly increased neopterin levels between given time points TP1 vs. TP2, TP1 vs. TP3, and TP2 vs. TP3 (p < 0.001). However, IL-4 and BDNF levels significantly decreased with consecutive cycles of chemotherapy (p < 0.001). On Patient Health Questionnaire assessment (PHQ-9), scores of items like loss of interest, feeling depressed, sleep problems, loss of energy, and appetite problems were found significantly affected with consecutive cycles of chemotherapy (p < 0.001). The study found weak negative correlations between IL-4, BDNF, and neopterin levels and changes in PHQ-9 scores at both TP2 and TP3, suggesting a potential inverse relationship between these markers and depression symptoms. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study suggests a potential link between elevated neopterin levels, decreased IL-4, and BDNF levels, and the presence of depression in lymphoma patients receiving R-CHOP chemotherapy. Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) face an increased risk of developing depression and metabolic dysregulation, which can lead to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the relationship between the severity of depression and metabolic dysregulation in patients with T2DM remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate this association using data from the ACCORD‐health‐related quality of life study. Methods and Results: Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) scores and medication regimens were assessed at baseline, 1, 3, and 4 years, and HbA1c, blood pressure, and lipid levels were monitored every 4 months over a 4‐year period. The severity of depressive symptoms was categorized as none (0–4 points), mild (5–9 points), or moderate–severe (10–24 points) based on PHQ‐9 scores. Among the participants, 62% developed depressive symptoms at some point during the 4‐year follow‐up period, with 21% experiencing persistent depressive symptoms. Participants with moderate‐to‐severe depression exhibited 0.18% (0.12, 0.24) higher levels of HbA1c, 1.11 mmHg (95% CI, 0.04, 2.15) of SBP, 0.90 mmHg (95% CI, 0.22,1.58) of DBP, and 2.12(95% CI, −0.03, 4.27) mg/dL of LDL, and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.38, 1.56) mg/dL lower levels of HDL compared to their counterparts without depressive symptoms. Moreover, as the severity of depressive symptoms increased, variability in HbA1c and blood pressure levels also increased. Furthermore, patients with more severe depressive symptoms demonstrated suboptimal adherence to medication regimens. Conclusion: Our study found a significant association between depressive symptoms severity and metabolic control in T2DM patients. Greater depressive severity correlated with poorer glycemic, blood pressure, and lipid control, alongside increased variability in these parameters. Additionally, patients with severe depressive symptoms showed suboptimal medication adherence. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) are commonly used scales to measure depression severity in older adults. We utilized data from the Optimizing Outcomes of Treatment-Resistant Depression in Older Adults (OPTIMUM) clinical trial to produce conversion tables relating PHQ-9 and MADRS total scores. We split the sample into training (N = 555) and validation samples (N = 187). Equipercentile linking was performed on the training sample to produce conversion tables for PHQ-9 and MADRS. We compared the original and estimated scores in the validation sample with Bland-Altman analysis. We compared the depression severity level using the original and estimated scores with Chi-square tests. The Bland-Altman analysis confirmed that differences between the original and estimated scores for at least 95 % of the sample fit within 1.96 standard deviations of the mean difference. Chi-square tests showed a significant difference in the proportion of participants at each depression severity category determined using the original and estimated scores. The conversion tables should be used with caution when comparing depression severity at the individual level. Administration mode of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) may influence responses. We assessed if Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale – Depression subscale (HADS-D) item responses and scores were associated with administration mode. We compared (1) self-administration versus interview-administration; within self-administration (2) research or medical setting versus private; and (3) pen-and-paper versus electronic; and within interview-administration (4) in-person versus phone. We analysed individual participant data meta-analysis datasets with item-level data for the PHQ-9 (N = 34,529), EPDS (N = 16,813), and HADS-D (N = 16,768). We used multiple indicator multiple cause models to assess differential item functioning (DIF) by administration mode. We found statistically significant DIF for most items on all measures due to large samples, but influence on total scores was negligible. In 10 comparisons conducted across the PHQ-9, EPDS, and HADS-D, Pearson's correlations and intraclass correlation coefficients between latent depression symptom scores from models that did or did not account for DIF were between 0.995 and 1.000. Total PHQ-9, EPDS, and HADS-D scores did not differ materially across administration modes. Background: Emerging evidence indicated that depression is currently one of the most burdensome diseases worldwide, and it can lead to a variety of functional physical impairments. However, the studies estimated the association between depression and thyroid function remain sparse. We aimed to investigate the association between depression and thyroid function in the American population. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2007 to 2012. In the 12,502 adults aged 20-80 years, weighted linear regression models and multiple logistic regression models were applied to evaluate the association between depression and thyroid function indicators. The thyroid indicators investigated were mainly free thyroxine (FT4), total T4 (TT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), total T3 (TT3), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and antithyroperoxidase antibody (TPOAb), thyroglobulin (Tg) and antithyroglobulin antibody (TgAb). Results: The final results were reached after adjusting for various confounding factors. In the stratification analysis of subgroups divided by age, depression was significantly negatively correlated with FT4, FT3, and TT3 in both younger adults (p = 0.00122, p < 0.00001, and p = 0.00003) and older adults (p = 0.00001, p = 0.00004, and p < 0.00001). In contrast, depression was significantly negatively correlated with TT4 and Tg in older adults (p = 0.00054, p = 0.00695) and positively correlated in younger adults (p = 0.01352, p < 0.00001). The subgroup analysis by gender revealed that depression was significantly negatively correlated with FT4, FT3, and TT3 in both adult males (p = 0.0164, p = 0.0204, and p = 0.0050) and adult females (p = 0.0001, p < 0.0001, and p < 0.0001), which was more prominent in females. The positive correlation between depression symptoms and TPOAb was only found in adult females (p = 0.0282) and younger adults (p = 0.00488). Conclusion: This study confirmed a significant correlation between depressive and thyroid function and it varied among different genders or age. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients with glaucoma compared to the average Brazilian prevalence (9.8% of anxiety and 5.8% of depression, according to the World Health Organization) and its correlation with the severity of the disease. Methods: This was a transversal, single-arm trial of patients from four glaucoma centers in São Paulo and Curitiba--Brazil. Patients comprised adults at least 18 years of age with glaucoma diagnosis under treatment for at least 6 months. All subjects of the study answered two questionnaires (PHQ-9 and GAD-7) to evaluate the presence of anxiety and depression, and the results were analyzed accordingly to clinical and demographic characteristics. Results: The protocol included a total of 210 patients. The average age was 61.6 ± 15.3 years, and the female gender was more common (68.86%). Primary open-angle glaucoma was the most common diagnosis (59.90%). The average IOP was 18.5 mmHg, and 1.5 anti-glaucoma drops were the mean treatment. The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 26.90 and 25.71%, respectively. Most patients with anxiety were classified as early glaucoma, while those with depression had severe glaucoma. Scores on the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 (PHQ-9) are frequently used to assess depression both in research and in clinical practice. The aim was to examine the validity of the PHQ-9 sum score by using Mokken scale analysis (Study I) and cognitive interviews (Study II) on the Icelandic version of PHQ-9. A primary care sample of 618 individuals was used in Study I. The results indicate that the PHQ-9 items are not close enough to perfectly unidimensional for their sum score to accurately order people on the depression severity dimension. In Study II, the sample consisted of 53 individuals, with 28 having a history of depression and 25 not. The findings reveal a number of issues concerning respondents' use of the PHQ-9. No systematic differences were found in the results of the two groups. The PHQ-9 sum score should thus be interpreted and used with great care. Objective: Vortioxetine has demonstrated safety and efficacy in improving symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), including overall functioning in real-world settings. This is the first study in a real-life clinical setting in India to evaluate effectiveness and safety of vortioxetine in patients with MDD. Methods: This interventional, open-label study consisted of a 12-week treatment period with flexible doses of vortioxetine (5–20 mg/day) in adult patients (aged 18–65 years) with a confirmed MDD diagnosis. Effectiveness outcomes included change from baseline to week 12 in Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Clinical Global Impression–Severity (CGI-S) scores, along with CGI-Improvement (CGI-I) scores at week 12, using a mixed model for repeated measures. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded for safety outcome assessments. Results: Of 395 patients who received vortioxetine, 42.3% were women mean age 38.9 years; 322 patients completed the study. Significant improvement in depressive symptoms was observed in change from baseline to week 12 least squares (LS) mean (SE) PHQ-9 total score (−9.36 [0.276]; p<.0001) and CGI-S score (−2.14 [0.065]; p<.0001). LS mean (SE) CGI-I score showed significant improvement at week 12 (1.93 [0.067]; p<.0001). Subgroup analysis across age, sex, disease severity, and body mass index showed significant improvements in depression symptoms and severity. A total of 35.4% (n = 140) of patients experienced treatment-emergent AEs (mostly mild-moderate); nausea and pruritus were the most frequent (6.6%, n = 26 each). Conclusion: Safety and effectiveness of vortioxetine in improving symptoms of MDD over a 12-week period was demonstrated in a real-life clinical setting in India. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the impact of psychological stress on erectile dysfunction (ED) in male patients following the Gaziantep-Kahramanmaras earthquake. The investigation aimed to establish correlations between earthquake-induced stress and changes in sexual function using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scores. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on male ED patients from a Gaziantep urology clinic post-earthquake (March to August 2023). Patients with deteriorated erectile function post-earthquake (group 1) and those with pre-existing ED experiencing worsened symptoms post-earthquake (group 2) were included. Data collected encompassed sexual histories, IIEF scores, laboratory tests, and PHQ-9/GAD-7 evaluations. Patients were also evaluated mild and mild to moderate ED, moderate and severe ED according to IIEF erectile function. Results: Seventy-six patients were evaluated (24 in group 1 and 52 in group 2). Significant reductions in total IIEF scores (58 to 40 in group 1 and 49 to 33 in group 2) were observed post-earthquake in both groups (p<0.001). PHQ-9/GAD-7 scores was 11.12±3.79/9.34±3.11 in mild and mild to moderate ED and 13.17±3.05/12.14±3.17 in moderate and severe ED (p=0.011, p<0.001, respectively). Negative correlations existed between PHQ-9/GAD-7 scores and IIEF erectile function (p<0.05) and total IIEF (p<0.05). Conclusions: This research suggests a plausible connection between the Gaziantep-Kahramanmaras earthquake and heightened ED cases. Psychological stress post-earthquake may contribute to worsened ED symptoms. Further investigations are warranted to comprehensively understand the interplay between natural disasters and sexual dysfunction, essential for optimizing patient care in challenging situations. Background: Young adults report increased rates of anxiety and depression than other age groups. Furthermore, young adult athletes experience additional stressors that may negatively impact their mental health. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among Division I collegiate athletes and the influences of sex, sport type, and distance from home. Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that self-reported levels of anxiety and depression would increase among this population during this timeframe. Study Design: Cross-sectional. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: Participants included 792 incoming Division I collegiate athletes. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores were completed by all incoming student athletes at a single institution as part of their preparticipation examination over 5 years. Both survey scores were categorized into different levels of severity and separately compared with chi-square tests. Continuous scores were modeled separately using negative binomial regression models including year, sex, sport type, and home location as covariates. Results: Results showed consistent levels of anxiety and depression over time. Female athletes reported higher levels of both anxiety and depression than male athletes, and individual sport athletes reported higher levels of depression than team sport athletes. Distance from home was not associated with anxiety or depression levels. Conclusion: Overall, levels of anxiety and depression did not change in this population over this time period. However, differences in anxiety and depression were seen between sexes and depression between sport types. Clinical Relevance: Understanding anxiety and depression risk factors among collegiate athletes can enhance early identification and intervention to improve mental health and allow for better allocation of resources to at-risk groups among Division I collegiate athletes. Background/Objectives: Depression and anxiety are prevalent disorders, particularly during emerging adulthood. Uncertainty about the future, exacerbated by unstable times, can lead to heightened future anxiety in this group. This study aimed to examine the complex associations of depression symptoms, future anxiety, and self-efficacy in adults from Poland. Additionally, we investigated age and gender differences in depression symptoms, future anxiety, and self-efficacy. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey study was performed in 2023 in Poland using snowball sampling. A convenience sample of 284 adults participated in this study, ranging in age between 18 and 65 years old (M = 32.18, SD = 11.87), including 95 men (33.45%) and 189 (66.55%) women, and also 157 (55.63%) emerging adults (18–28 years old) and 126 (44.37%) middle-aged adults (29–65 years old). The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Dark Future Scale (DFS-5), and Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) were used to measure depression, future anxiety, and self-efficacy, respectively. Results: A 2-way ANOVA showed that both emerging adults and women scored significantly higher in depression symptoms and future anxiety than middle-aged adults and men, respectively. Furthermore, women scored lower in self-efficacy than men. Analyses revealed that there was a positive correlation between depression and future anxiety. Self-efficacy was negatively correlated with depression and future anxiety. Self-efficacy and future anxiety accounted for 48% of depression variance, controlling for age and gender. Future anxiety was found to be a partial mediator of the relationship between self-efficacy and depression. Conclusions: This study significantly advances the understanding of mental health in adults, grounded in social cognitive theories, revealing that low self-efficacy heightens future anxiety, thereby exacerbating depression symptoms in the Polish adult population, independent of age and gender. Emerging adults and women need psychological support to reduce depression and future anxiety. Women, in particular, should be the main focus of interventions to boost self-efficacy. Mobile sensing-based depression severity assessment could complement the subjective questionnaires-based assessment currently used in practice. However, previous studies on mobile sensing for depression severity assessment were conducted on homogeneous mental health condition participants; evaluation of possible generalization across heterogeneous groups has been limited. Similarly, previous studies have not investigated the potential of free-living audio data for depression severity assessment. Audio recordings from free-living could provide rich sociability features to characterize depressive states. We conducted a study with 11 healthy individuals, 13 individuals with major depressive disorder, and eight individuals with schizoaffective disorders. Communication logs and location data from the participants' smartphones and continuous audio recordings of free-living from a wearable audioband were obtained over a week for each participant. The depression severity prediction model trained using communication log and location data features had a root mean squared error (rmse) of 6.80. Audio-based sociability features further reduced the rmse to 6.07 (normalized rmse of 0.22). Audio-based sociability features also improved the F1 score in the five-class depression category classification model from 0.34 to 0.46. Thus, free-living audio-based sociability features complement the commonly used mobile sensing features to improve depression severity assessment. The prediction results obtained with mobile sensing-based features are better than the rmse of 9.83 (normalized rmse of 0.36) and the F1 score of 0.25 obtained with a baseline model. Additionally, the predicted depression severity had a significant correlation with reported depression severity (correlation coefficient of 0.76, p < 0.001). Thus, our work shows that mobile sensing could model depression severity across participants with heterogeneous mental health conditions, potentially offering a screening tool for depressive symptoms monitoring in the broader population. Objectives: The study examined the impact of long term COVID-19 infection on the patients' erectile function and anxiety and depression in the same patients as well as the impact of daily tadalafil 5 mg supplementation on their erectile function. Methods: Recovered 114 men were evaluated by the validated Arabic version of the international index of erectile function (ArIIEF-5) and the Arabic versions of the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) at time of presentation, at 3 months and at 6 months, respectively. Forty recovered patients who still complained of ED received tadalafil 5 mg daily for 2 months then were evaluated again at 3 and 6 months by penile duplex, the Arabic versions of the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) at the same periods, respectively. Results: At the time of presentation, there was a positive correlation between the severity of COVID-19 infection, ArIIEF-5 and PHQ-9 (r = 0.249, p = 0.008; r = 0.241, p = 0.010, respectively). Most of the patients showed normal penile duplex parameters. There were 40 ED patients at presentation, 5 ED patients at 3 months and 3 ED patients at 6 months, respectively. Background: The intricate pathophysiological mechanisms of major depressive disorder (MDD) necessitate the development of comprehensive early indicators that reflect the complex interplay of emotional, physical, and cognitive factors. Despite its potential to fulfill these criteria, interoception remains underexplored in MDD. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of interoception in transforming MDD's clinical practices by examining interoception deficits across various MDD stages and analyzing their complex associations with the spectrum of depressive symptoms. Methods: This study included 431 healthy individuals, 206 subclinical depression individuals, and 483 MDD patients. Depressive symptoms and interoception function were assessed using the PHQ‐9 and MAIA‐2, respectively. Results: Interoception dysfunction occurred in the preclinical phase of MDD and further impaired in the clinical stage. Antidepressant therapies showed limited efficacy in improving interoception and might damage some dimensions. Interoceptive dimensions might predict depressive symptoms, primarily enhancing negative thinking patterns. The predictive model based on interoception was built with random split verification and demonstrated good discrimination and predictive performance in identifying MDD. Conclusions: Early alterations in the preclinical stage, multivariate associations with depressive symptoms, and good discrimination and predictive performance highlight the importance of interoception in MDD management, pointing to a paradigm shift in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Patients with facial trauma often experience a psychological burden from their injuries. This study aimed to identify risk factors for adverse mental health outcomes in patients affected by facial trauma, using the 'Integrating Mental and Physical Healthcare: Research, Training and Services' (IMPARTS) screening tool. All patients >18 years of age who completed more than one IMPARTS screening tool in the Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma Clinic between 2019 and 2021 were included in this study. This tool was used to assess the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, and depression. Included patients completed the IMPARTS questionnaire at initial follow-up (mean 18 days post-trauma) and one subsequent time point (mean 82 days). 167 patients were included in the study. On multivariable analysis, a history of psychiatric illness (P = 0.015) and interpersonal violence as the mechanism of injury (P = 0.010) were identified as predictive of risk of PTSD. Risk of PTSD was lower in zygomatic injuries (P = 0.001), while nasal involvement increased at-risk status for depression (P = 0.009). 47.3% of patients screened positive on initial IMPARTS assessment, while 35.3% screened positive on follow-up IMPARTS assessment. Abstract Inflammation plays an important role in depression, and the neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) is a cost-effective and readily available novel biomarker of inflammation. The association between NPAR and depression is unclear; therefore, to assess the relationship between NPAR and depression, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 33,768 participants ≥ 18 years of age from the 2005–2018 NHANES database. NPAR was calculated as Neutrophil percentage (in total WBC count) (%) × 100/Albumin (g/dL). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to test the independent association between NPAR and depression, adjusting for demographic factors, education, smoking status, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, the ratio of income to poverty, and history of cardiovascular disease. Results showed that NPAR was significantly and positively associated with depression. When NPAR were analyzed as a categorical variable, there was a 20% increase in the prevalence of depression in the quartile with the highest NPAR compared to the quartile with the lowest NPAR (OR 1.20[95% CI 1.06, 1.36]). Smoothed curve fitting and threshold effect analyses also showed a positive association between NPAR and depression, with an inflection point for threshold and saturation effects of 12.65. NPAR was positively associated with the likelihood of developing depression when NPAR > 12.65 (OR 1.06[95% CI 1.04, 1.09]). The nine-item Patient Health Care Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scale was used to assess depression in the study’s population, and its effects on pharmacotherapy of diabetes. Chi-square test was used to evaluate relationship between ordinal variables/categorical variables and depression whereas; Student’s t-test was used to assess the relationship between numerical variables with depression.Results: A total of 320 patients were assessed, comprising 120 (37.5%) males and 200 (62.5%) females, with a mean age of 52.5 (SD± 11.8) years. The average duration of diabetes is 7.0 (SD± 5.4). The average PHQ-9 score was 8.3 (SD± 5.5). Depression was found to be prevalent in 43.7% of the study population. Gender (female) (p-value 0.002), advanced age (p-value 0.002), lower income (p-value 0.001), education levels (p-value 0.001), longer duration of diabetes (p-value 0.001), poor diabetes control according to BSR value (p-value 0.001), usage of injectable insulin (p-value 0.005), and concomitant diseases (p-value 0.001) were found to be independently linked with depression. Significant association was observed between depression and treatment adherence (p-value 0.0025), number of missed doses (p-value 0.045), and difficulty in diabetes management (p-value 0.0015).Conclusion: Our study highlights significant prevalence of depression in study population and the prevalent depression negatively impacts on treatment adherence. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the impact of psychological stress on erectile dysfunction (ED) in male patients following the Gaziantep-Kahramanmaras earthquake. The investigation aimed to establish correlations between earthquake-induced stress and changes in sexual function using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scores. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on male ED patients from a Gaziantep urology clinic post-earthquake (March to August 2023). Patients with deteriorated erectile function post-earthquake (group 1) and those with pre-existing ED experiencing worsened symptoms post-earthquake (group 2) were included. Data collected encompassed sexual histories, IIEF scores, laboratory tests, and PHQ-9/GAD-7 evaluations. Abstract Mobile sensing-based depression severity assessment could complement the subjective questionnaires-based assessment currently used in practice. However, previous studies on mobile sensing for depression severity assessment were conducted on homogeneous mental health condition participants; evaluation of possible generalization across heterogeneous groups has been limited. Similarly, previous studies have not investigated the potential of free-living audio data for depression severity assessment. Audio recordings from free-living could provide rich sociability features to characterize depressive states. We conducted a study with 11 healthy individuals, 13 individuals with major depressive disorder, and eight individuals with schizoaffective disorders. Communication logs and location data from the participants’ smartphones and continuous audio recordings of free-living from a wearable audioband were obtained over a week for each participant. The depression severity prediction model trained using communication log and location data features had a root mean squared error (rmse) of 6.80. Audio-based sociability features further reduced the rmse to 6.07 (normalized rmse of 0.22). Audio-based sociability features also improved the F1 score in the five-class depression category classification model from 0.34 to 0.46. Thus, free-living audio-based sociability features complement the commonly used mobile sensing features to improve depression severity assessment. The prediction results obtained with mobile sensing-based features are better than the rmse of 9.83 (normalized rmse of 0.36) and the F1 score of 0.25 obtained with a baseline model. Perinatal depression often goes undetected and untreated in low- and middle-income countries like China. Reliable screening tools can improve this situation. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), two widely used tools, often exhibit inconsistent factor structures, leading to debates regarding their unidimensionality versus multidimensionality and casting doubts on their psychometric properties. Our study aimed to assess the utility of PHQ-9 and EPDS in Chinese perinatal women and to address the debate by employing the bifactor model and item response theory (IRT). We enrolled 2939 perinatal women from a maternity and infant health hospital serving all 16 districts of Shanghai. The bifactor model was used to examine the factor structure of PHQ-9 and EPDS, while IRT analysis evaluated the psychometric properties. The indices derived from the bifactor model indicated that both PHQ-9 and EPDS should be used as unidimensional measurements. All items in PHQ-9 and EPDS showed adequate discriminative ability and difficulty, but certain items require further refinement. PHQ-9 demonstrated better measurement precision at high levels of latent depression than EPDS. These findings might not generalize to perinatal women in impoverished areas. The absence of clinical diagnoses limited the exploration of sensitivity and specificity. PHQ-9 and EPDS are effective tools for detecting depression in Chinese perinatal women and should be used as unidimensional tools. Background: The prevalence of depression is higher among women compared to men. The prevalence of depression is higher among married working women compared to married working men. Studies estimating the prevalence of depression among working women and quantitatively evaluating household work about depression in Kerala, India, are limited. The primary objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among working women residing in the field area of Medical College Health Unit – Pangappara, Thiruvananthapuram. The secondary objective was to study factors associated with depressive symptoms among the study population. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional study for which 110 participants were selected using two-stage cluster sampling. The data was obtained over the phone due to the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The data was analyzed with SPSS Version 26. Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms among the study population was 14.5%, with a PHQ-9 score greater than or equal to five. The prevalence of depressive symptoms with a PHQ-9 score greater than or equal to ten was 4.5%. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was significantly higher among working women who had no one to help with household chores and childcare. Conclusion: The study quantifies the duration of unpaid domestic labor done by working women in addition to paid jobs. These unpaid domestic chores are often not shared by their husbands. The study signifies the need for gender equality and the sharing of domestic work and child care by male partners.

Abstract Background Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) has been identified as a biomarker for neurologic diseases. However, sNfL remains unknown to be responsible for depression. Aims The aim of this research was to explore the relationship between sNfL levels and depression in US adults. Methods In this cross-sectional survey of the general population, we investigated representative data involving 10,175 participants from the 2013–2014 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Depression was diagnosed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The effect of related factors on depression was analyzed by conducting a univariate analysis. Stratified analysis was utilized to detect the stability and sensitivity of the relationship. After adjusting for race, education, marital status, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), sleep duration, income, and a history of hypertension, sedentary behavior and stroke, multivariable linear regression was performed to demonstrate the correlation between sNfL and depression. Results A total of 1301 individuals between the ages of 20 and 75 were involved in this investigation, of which 108 (8.3%) were diagnosed with depression. A significant positive correlation between sNfL and depression among adults in the US was observed by conducting univariable analyses. After adjusting for confounding factors, the multivariate analyses indicated that elevated sNfL levels might play a pivotal role in the development of depression (odds ratio (OR) = 3.0; 95% confidence interval (CI): (1.5, 6.1), P = 0.002). Conclusion These results indicated that sNfL is closely linked to depression in a nationally representative individual. However, further studies are needed to confirm the biological mechanism as well as the clinical implications of sNfL and depression.

Abstract This study employs machine learning to detect the severity of major depressive disorder (MDD) through binary and multiclass classifications. We compared models that used only biomarkers of oxidative stress with those that incorporate sociodemographic and health-related factors. Data collected from 830 participants, based on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score, inform our analysis. In binary classification, the Random Forest (RF) classifier achieved the highest Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.84 when all features were included. In multiclass classification, the AUC improved from 0.84 with only oxidative stress biomarkers to 0.88 when all characteristics were included. To address data imbalance, weighted classifiers, and Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) approaches were applied. Weighted random forest (WRF) improved multiclass classification, achieving an AUC of 0.91. Statistical tests, including the Friedman test and the Conover post-hoc test, confirmed significant differences between model performances, with WRF using all features outperforming others. Feature importance analysis shows that oxidative stress biomarkers, particularly GSH, are top ranked among all features. Clinicians can leverage the results of this study to improve their decision-making processes by incorporating oxidative stress biomarkers in addition to the standard criteria for depression diagnosis.

Abstract Background Participants in research trials often disclose severe depression symptoms, including thoughts of self-harm and suicidal ideation, in validated self-administered questionnaires such as the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). However, there is no standard protocol for responding to such disclosure, and the opportunity to support people at risk is potentially missed. We developed and evaluated a risk assessment protocol for the IBD-BOOST randomised controlled trial (ISRCTN71618461 09/09/2019). Methods Participants completed the PHQ-9 at baseline and 6-month and 12-month follow-ups. The trial database automatically alerted the research team to risk assess participants. Trial researchers, trained in the protocol, contacted participants by telephone, completed the risk assessment, and signposted participants to appropriate professional services. Results Seven hundred eighty participants were randomised in the trial; 41 required risk assessment. One participant declined assessment, so 40 risk assessments were completed. Twenty-four participants were assessed as low-risk and 16 participants as medium-risk, with 12 declaring previous suicide attempts. None were rated as high-risk. Trial participants expressed appreciation for being contacted, and all except two wished to receive information about professional support services. Trial risk assessors reported positive experiences of conducting the risk assessment with suggestions for improvement, which resulted in minor modifications to the protocol. Discussion Our evaluation demonstrated that it was viable for a research trial team to successfully conduct a risk-assessment protocol for trial participants reporting thoughts of self-harm, with training and support from senior colleagues. Resources are required for training and delivery, but it is not unduly onerous. Trial participants appeared to find completing the assessment acceptable.

Method: A total of 2,235 adolescents (M = 14.68 years, SD = 1.76 years), selected through stratified cluster sampling, participated in the study. Results: Self-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety were common. Statistically significant differences were found when comparing the means scores of PHQ-9 and GAD-7 across sex and age. Percentile scores were computed for both total scores and were stratified by sex and age. Conclusions: Both the PHQ-9 and the GAD-7 are brief, simple, and useful measurement instruments with adequate psychometric properties for the assessment of self-reported depressive and anxious symptomatology among Spanish adolescents. A reliable and valid assessment of mental health is essential, as it allows for early detection and identification, which in turn can help in guiding psychological preventive interventions in a critical human developmental stage such as adolescence.

Abstract Exposure and damage caused by noise have been reported in many countries around the world. However, few nationwide studies explored the association of residential environmental noise with depressive symptoms, this study aims to examine this association. The Korean Community Health Survey at the individual-level and the Korean Environmental Noise Measurement Database at the regional-level were used. A total of 30,630 individuals were eligible for the analysis. Multilevel model framework was applied to account for the clustered structure of the regional-level data in which individual-level data containing demographic characteristics and health information were nested. As a result of the analysis, Individuals living in the highest environmental noise area had a 1.55 times higher likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms than those living in the lowest environmental noise area (95% CI, 1.04–2.31). After stratified analysis according to depressive symptom severity, individuals residing in areas with the highest environmental noise exposure had significantly higher odds of mild (aOR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.02–2.07) and moderate symptoms (aOR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.00–2.91). In conclusion, the higher the residential environmental noise, the higher the possibility of mild-to-moderate depressive symptoms. Our findings suggest the need for continued attention to and management of noise pollution, which has the potential to adversely affect individual’s mental health.

Abstract Background Pregnant women faced great challenges and psychological and physiological changes of varying degrees during the omicron epidemic outbreak. It is important to recognize the potential impact of these challenges on the mental health of pregnant women and to provide appropriate resources and support to mitigate their effects. Method By using the convenience sampling approach, a total of 401 pregnant women from two hospitals of different grades in two cities were included in the survey. The cross-sectional survey was conducted by basic characteristics, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and self-made questionnaire. Results Insomnia affected 207 participants (51.6%), depression affected 160 participants (39.9%) and anxiety affected 151 participants (37.7%). Moreover, pregnant women in provincial capital city were more likely to experience anxiety, depression and insomnia than those in county-level city (P 0.05). Conclusion Pregnant women frequently suffer from anxiety disorder, depression and insomnia as a result of the omicron pandemic in China. During this period, the community and medical professionals should provide more psychological counseling, conduct health education and offer virtual prenatal care to pregnant women (particularly in the provincial capital city).

Overactive bladder (OAB) and depression are both common disorders and there is research suggesting an association between the two, but there is a lack of studies with large samples. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between OAB and depressive symptoms. We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for the period 2005 to 2018. OAB was characterized by the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS, score > 3) and depression was diagnosed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, score ≥ 10). There were three models employed in our analysis: (1) Crude model was unadjusted; (2) Model 1 was adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, educational level, and marital status; (3) Model 2 was adjusted for factors in Model 1 plus the remained potential covariates. We used survey-weighted logistic regression models to assess the association between OAB and depression. Subsequently, subgroup analyses and smoothed curve analyses were used to evaluate the reliability of the findings. Finally, a total of 6612 participants were included in our study, consisting of 1005 participants with diagnosis of OAB and 5607 participants without diagnosis of OAB. After adjusting for all covariates, there was a significant positive association between OAB and depression (OR: 2.89, 95 % CI: 1.91, 4.37). The severity of OAB was also positively associated with depression. Compared to participants without OAB, the fully adjusted ORs for depression were 2.76 (95 % CI: 1.64, 4.65) for those with mild OAB, 3.79 (95 % CI: 1.68, 8.55) for those with moderate OAB, and 5.21 (95 % CI: 1.39, 19.53) for those with severe OAB. This study revealed a strong association between OAB and depression and a progressive increase in the risk of depression as the severity of OAB (mild, moderate, and severe) increased. Patients with psoriasis have increased risk of suicidal ideation and behavior (SIB) and depression. Bimekizumab, a biologic that inhibits interleukin (IL)-17A and IL-17F, received Food and Drug Administration approval in 2023 for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, following 2021 European Medicines Agency approval. To report SIB and depression in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis treated in bimekizumab clinical trials. Mental health changes, including neuropsychiatric events, were actively monitored across 9 bimekizumab clinical trials in psoriasis phase 2/3 trials. The patient-reported electronic Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (measuring SIB) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (measuring depression) were administered, monitored by an independent Neuropsychiatric Adjudication Committee. Throughout 7166 patient-years (PY) of bimekizumab exposure, the adjudicated SIB rate was 0.13/100PY; SIB ranges for the general psoriasis population and patients receiving anti-IL-17A/anti-IL-23 therapies are 0.09 to 0.54/100PY and 0.09 to 0.19/100PY, respectively. At week 16, 92.9% vs 81.1% of bimekizumab- vs placebo-treated patients had no/minimal depression. Newonset positive electronic Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale responses and mean Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores were low for bimekizumab-treated patients. Patient exclusion for significant/severe prespecified SIB/depression history. The long-term adjudicated SIB rate with bimekizumab was low and within ranges reported in the general psoriasis patient population and psoriasis patients treated with anti-IL-17A/anti-IL-23 biologics. Objective: Currently, the relationship between parathyroidectomy and objective neuropsychiatric outcomes are not clearly defined. The purpose of this study is to perform the first ever Meta‐analysis of preoperative and postoperative PHQ‐9 and GAD‐7 scores in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism undergoing parathyroidectomy with the goal of identifying a specific psychometric score that could be used as an indication for surgical intervention. Data Sources: A comprehensive search of the literature was performed using PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Ovid All EBM Reviews. Review Methods: Studies met inclusion criteria if they evaluated preoperative and postoperative PHQ‐9 and/or GAD‐7 scores in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism undergoing parathyroidectomy. Random effects Meta‐analyses were used to analyze the compiled data. Results: The literature search returned 1433 articles for initial review of which 6 (1105 participants) met criteria for inclusion and Meta‐analysis. Meta‐analysis revealed that primary hyperparathyroidism patients had significantly higher presurgical PHQ‐9 scores when compared to control groups. Additionally, patients experienced a statistically significant and sustained decrease in PHQ‐9 scores following parathyroidectomy. Notably, there was a dramatic decrease in the percentage of patients with PHQ‐9 scores ≥10 (considered clinically significant for depression) following parathyroidectomy. Conclusion: Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism experience a statistically significant and sustained improvement in PHQ‐9 scores following parathyroidectomy. Additionally, symptoms of anxiety and suicidal ideation appear to decrease after parathyroidectomy. Exposure and damage caused by noise have been reported in many countries around the world. However, few nationwide studies explored the association of residential environmental noise with depressive symptoms, this study aims to examine this association. The Korean Community Health Survey at the individual-level and the Korean Environmental Noise Measurement Database at the regional-level were used. A total of 30,630 individuals were eligible for the analysis. Multilevel model framework was applied to account for the clustered structure of the regional-level data in which individual-level data containing demographic characteristics and health information were nested. As a result of the analysis, Individuals living in the highest environmental noise area had a 1.55 times higher likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms than those living in the lowest environmental noise area (95% CI, 1.04–2.31). After stratified analysis according to depressive symptom severity, individuals residing in areas with the highest environmental noise exposure had significantly higher odds of mild (aOR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.02–2.07) and moderate symptoms (aOR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.00–2.91). In conclusion, the higher the residential environmental noise, the higher the possibility of mild-to-moderate depressive symptoms. The association between diabetes and depressive symptoms is well recognized. However, the impact of depressive symptoms on prediabetes remains unclear. This study aims to explore the specific correlation between depressive symptoms and prediabetes. A total of 7467 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study, spanning five rounds of surveys conducted between 2007 and 2016. Weighted logistic regression was utilized to assess the relationship between depressive symptoms and prediabetes. Compared with the normoglycemic population, individuals with prediabetes had a significantly higher probability of experiencing trouble sleeping (P = 0.020). After adjusting for non-glucose factors, there was no significant correlation between PHQ-9 and prediabetes; however, severe depressive symptoms were positively associated with abnormal fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels (OR = 1.093 [95 % CI 1.002, 1.192]). There was a positive correlation between trouble concentrating and FPG abnormalities (OR = 1.065 [95 % CI 1.004, 1.129]). The cross-sectional design limits causal inference. Individuals with depressive symptoms, especially severe cases, should be targeted for prediabetes prevention and management efforts. The objective was to investigate associations of serum vitamin D concentration with depressive symptoms and assess the impact that vitamin D concentration has on the occurrence of depressive symptoms in 20–44-year-old pregnant women, postpartum women, non-pp women (non-pregnant/postpartum women), and men, including a separate subgroup analysis of postpartum breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women. The study populations were selected from the 2007–2018 NHANES public data. Subjective interview data and objective laboratory data including depressive symptoms, serum vitamin D concentration, nutrient intake, and demographic information were utilized. Two diet patterns were created using principal component analysis, and a Bayesian multinomial model was fit to predict the depression outcomes for each subpopulation. The estimates for the log vitamin D slope parameter were negative for all cohorts; as vitamin D increased, the probability of having no depression increased, while the probability of depression decreased. The pregnant cohort had the steepest vitamin D slope, followed by postpartum women, then non-pp women and men. Higher vitamin D concentration had more impact on decreasing depression risk in pregnant and postpartum women compared to non-pp women and men. Among postpartum women, higher vitamin D concentration had a greater influence on decreasing breastfeeding women's depression risk than non-breastfeeding women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pregnant women faced great challenges and psychological and physiological changes of varying degrees during the omicron epidemic outbreak. It is important to recognize the potential impact of these challenges on the mental health of pregnant women and to provide appropriate resources and support to mitigate their effects. Method: By using the convenience sampling approach, a total of 401 pregnant women from two hospitals of different grades in two cities were included in the survey. The cross-sectional survey was conducted by basic characteristics, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and self-made questionnaire. Results: Insomnia affected 207 participants (51.6%), depression affected 160 participants (39.9%) and anxiety affected 151 participants (37.7%). Moreover, pregnant women in provincial capital city were more likely to experience anxiety, depression and insomnia than those in county-level city (P < 0.01). Pregnant women's anxiety, depression and insomnia were positively correlated with the severity of COVID-19 infection (P < 0.05). However, COVID-19 infection had no appreciable impact on maternal demand for termination of pregnancy and cesarean section (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Pregnant women frequently suffer from anxiety disorder, depression and insomnia as a result of the omicron pandemic in China. During this period, the community and medical professionals should provide more psychological counseling, conduct health education and offer virtual prenatal care to pregnant women (particularly in the provincial capital city). Previous studies suggest an association between Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and depression, both highly prevalent after mTBI. To assess the prevalence and risk-factors of depression among patients with PCS 1 month after mTBI. We prospectively screened 372 mTBI patients admitted in two academic Emergency Departments between 2017 and 2019. One month after mTBI, we administered the Rivermead Post-concussion symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) questionnaires over the telephone. PCS and depression were defined by RPQ ≥ 12 and PHQ-9 ≥ 10. Multivariate multinomial regression identified baseline factors associated with PCS and depression. Two hundred and eight completed RPQ and PHQ-9. Forty-seven patients (22.5%) met criteria for PCS, among which 22 (46.8%) met criteria for depression (PCS+D+). Patients with PCS but without depression were less likely to present with an associated injury (Coefficient = −1.6, p = 0.047) and to report initial sadness (Coefficient = −2.5, p = 0.03). Initial sadness (Coefficient = −1.3, p = 0.047), associated injury (Coefficient = −1.9, p = 0.008), as well as initial nausea (Coefficient = −1.8, p = 0.002), and male sex (Coefficient = 1.8, p = 0.002), were associated with the absence of depression and PCS in comparison with PCS+D+ patients. BackgroundEmerging studies reveal a shared pathophysiological underpinning for metabolic problems and mental illnesses. The present study aimed to determine the association between atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and the incidence of major depressive disorder (MDD).Methods7,951 subjects of US adults were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. MDD was evaluated through the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and spline smoothing plot method were used to identify the relationship between AIP and MDD. The cut-off point was calculated using recursive partitioning analysis when segmenting effects emerged. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and Hosmer-Lemeshow test were conducted to evaluate the performance of AIP in identifying MDD. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were used to explore whether the association was stable in different populations.ResultsA positive correlation between AIP and PHQ-9 score and MDD was both observed in 7,951 subjects included in the study, with a significant threshold of -0.42 determined using recursive partitioning analysis. In the fully adjusted model, a positive association between AIP and PHQ-9 score and MDD was observed (β=0.46, 95% CI 0.14~0.78; OR=1.42, 95% CI 1.04~1.93). Individuals in the highest AIP quartile had a 0.39-unit higher PHQ-9 score (β=0.39, 95% CI 0.12~0.66) and a significantly 33% greater risk of MDD than those in the lowest AIP quartile (OR=1.33, 95% CI 1.02~1.73). Spline smoothing plot analysis further confirmed the positive and non-linear association between AIP and PHQ-9 and MDD. ROC analysis (AUC=0.771) and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test (χ2 = 14.239, P=0.076) suggested an excellent performance and goodness-of-fit of the relatively optimal model. DCA and CIC analysis also revealed a favorable overall net benefit and clinical impact of the model. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests revealed that the association between AIP and PHQ-9 score and MDD remained consistent across different subgroups and was not modified by other covariates, and this positive correlation was more pronounced in those with diabetes or hypertension.ConclusionAn elevated AIP is linked to a higher chance of MDD, especially in those with diabetes or hypertension. Resolving dyslipidemia and managing comorbidities may help reduce the likelihood of developing MDD.

Background: At present, the relationship between depression and the triglyceride glycemic (TyG) index remains a topic of debate. This study sought to elucidate the relationship between depression and the TyG index to create a predictive model that would help doctors diagnose patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset, which comprises data from 2009 to 2018. The analysis involved 11,222 adults with a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score of 5 or higher, indicating the presence of depression. As part of the analysis, multiple regression models were used to test whether a linear relationship existed between the TyG index and depression. A threshold effects analysis was used to generate smoothed curves and detect nonlinear correlations. Additionally, the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression were employed to identify the key risk factors associated with depression. The factors identified were then used to construct the risk prediction nomogram. Finally, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the discriminative performance of the model. Results: Multivariable linear regression analysis indicated a strong positive correlation between depression and the TyG index (β: 0.38, 95 % CI: 0.16–0.60, p = 0.0008). A U-shaped relationship with an inflection point was observed at a TyG index of 8.16. The nomogram model, constructed using risk factors identified by LASSO, exhibited a significant predictive value (AUC = 0.888). Conclusions: The results of this investigation point to a U-shaped association between depression risk and the TyG index among Americans. Those with a TyG index of over 8.16 are significantly more likely to develop depression. These results suggest a possible causal relationship and emphasize the importance of monitoring the TyG index in depression risk assessment.

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are used as part of clinical practice to determine the impact of the condition and treatment interventions on a patient’s health and quality of life. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is a self-administered diagnostic tool that has been widely adopted for the detection and monitoring of depression. Aim: This analysis reports the change in PHQ-9 scores from admission to discharge in patients admitted for depression to a South African acute psychiatric facility and aims to quantify the treatment effect of the admission using the PHQ-9 as the measurement tool. Setting: South African acute psychiatric facility. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of all patients admitted to Netcare Akeso acute psychiatric facilities from 01 January 2018 to 31 October 2022. Patients were included if they were ≥ 18 years of age, admitted with a primary International Classification of Disease (ICD)-10 code for depression (i.e. F32–F33) and fully completed both an admission and discharge PHQ-9 questionnaire. We excluded facilities focusing only on the treatment of patients with specialised conditions such as addiction or eating disorders. Results: This analysis included 13 308 patients admitted for depression at 10 different facilities. The median PHQ-9 score on admission was 19 (interquartile range [IQR] 14–23) and 5 (IQR 2–11) on discharge, with a median change of -12 (IQR -5 to -18). A minimal clinically important difference was seen in 87.6% patients (n = 10 091/11 515); a treatment effect was seen in 74.5% of patients and a clinically significant improvement was seen in 72.1% of patients. Conclusion: With the average patient reporting a four-fold reduction in the severity of their depression scores, PROMs provide a critical patient-centred window into the benefit that an inpatient admission has on those suffering with depression. Contribution: These changes are consistent with those seen internationally and provide a baseline for understanding the treatment efficacy of an inpatient admission for the treatment of depression.

PurposeThis study aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients with glaucoma compared to the average Brazilian prevalence (9.8% of anxiety and 5.8% of depression, according to the World Health Organization) and its correlation with the severity of the disease.MethodsThis was a transversal, single-arm trial of patients from four glaucoma centers in São Paulo and Curitiba—Brazil. Patients comprised adults at least 18 years of age with glaucoma diagnosis under treatment for at least 6 months. All subjects of the study answered two questionnaires (PHQ-9 and GAD-7) to evaluate the presence of anxiety and depression, and the results were analyzed accordingly to clinical and demographic characteristics.ResultsThe protocol included a total of 210 patients. The average age was 61.6 ± 15.3 years, and the female gender was more common (68.86%). Primary open-angle glaucoma was the most common diagnosis (59.90%). The average IOP was 18.5 mmHg, and 1.5 anti-glaucoma drops were the mean treatment. The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 26.90 and 25.71%, respectively. Most patients with anxiety were classified as early glaucoma, while those with depression had severe glaucoma.ConclusionThis study found that the prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients with glaucoma is higher than in the general population in our country.

The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of mental health on the academic performance of junior and senior students studying in a university setting during the 2022–2023 academic year, in the post-COVID period. The study was conducted in Beijing, China, with the participation of 600 students, including 300 first-year students and 300 fifth-year students. DASS (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale) and PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) questionnaires were employed to measure mental health. The DASS assesses symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, while the PHQ-9 specifically evaluates depression severity. Academic performance was evaluated using a 12-point scale, which incorporated various criteria such as exam scores, coursework performance, and participation in extracurricular activities. The research was conducted across five faculties of the university from 2022 to 2023. In the study, fifth-year students demonstrated a higher level of mental health compared to first-year students, with an average DASS score of 27.1 and 24.2, respectively. Interestingly, despite this, first-year students achieved higher academic performance indicators, with an average score of 8.2 compared to 9.8 in fifth-year students.
