Abstract: International audience; Adipose tissue fibrosis development blocks adipocyte hypertrophy and favors ectopic lipid accumulation. Here, we show that adipose tissue fibrosis is associated with obesity and insulin resistance in humans and mice. Kinetic studies in C3H mice fed a high-fat diet show activation of macrophages and progression of fibrosis along with adipocyte metabolic dysfunction and death. Adipose tissue fibrosis is attenuated by macrophage depletion. Impairment of Toll-like receptor 4 signaling protects mice from obesity-induced fibrosis. The presence of a functional Toll-like receptor 4 on adipose tissue hematopoietic cells is necessary for the initiation of adipose tissue fibrosis. Continuous low-dose infusion of the Toll-like receptor 4 ligand, lipopolysaccharide, promotes adipose tissue fibrosis. Ex vivo, lipopolysaccharide-mediated induction of fibrosis is prevented by antibodies against the profibrotic factor TGFβ1. Together, these results indicate that obesity and endotoxemia favor the development of adipose tissue fibrosis, a condition associated with insulin resistance, through immune cell Toll-like receptor 4.

Abstract: International audience; This work is dedicated to the characterization of the corrosion behavior of aluminum coatings deposited by cold spraying. Influences of solution pH, the concentration in Na2SO4 and addition of ceramic particles on corrosion behavior were evaluated. Influence of pH is greater than Na2SO4 concentration. The addition of SiC particles yields denser coating with lower porosity, which exhibits better corrosion resistance. This study confirms that electrochemistry is a good tool to optimize coating elaboration parameters.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, a comparative study of reactive sintering and optical properties of two laser ceramics Nd:Y3- Al5O12 (Nd:YAG) and Nd:Y3ScAl4O12 (Nd:YS1AG) has been achieved. The reaction sequence from primary oxides to the final garnet phase has been first examined. It was shown that Sc2O3 additions lead to similar reaction sequence than for Nd:YAG ceramics. Nevertheless, because of its lower reactivity than Al2O3, Sc2O3 begins to react at higher temperatures, i.e. after the formation of the monoclinic intermediate phase Y4Al2O9. For temperatures of 1700 K, the pure garnet phase Nd:Y3Sc1Al4O12 was obtained. Spectroscopic and laser properties of 2 at.%Nd:YS1AG transparent ceramics were then determined. Laser slope efficiency of these ceramics was 13.5%. Broader laser emission bandwidth at 1061 nm and 1064 nm were also reported in Nd:YS1AG ceramics compared to Nd:YAG ones. Switching between these two main laser lines by increasing the pump power or ceramics temperature was also observed.

Abstract: We experimentally study Bragg-scattering four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber at telecom wavelengths using photon counters. We explore the polarization dependence of this process with a continuous wave signal in the macroscopic and attenuated regime, with a wavelength shift of 23 nm. Our measurements of mean photon numbers per second under various pump polarization configurations agree well with the theoretical and numerical predictions based on classical models. We discuss the impact of noise under these different polarization configurations., 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the fluorescence and laser properties of a 2 at.% Nd-doped YSAG (Y3ScAl4O12) ceramic. We demonstrate the role of temperature in tailoring the fluorescence spectrum, whose spectral positions and intensities of the peaks are particularly depending on that parameter. As a consequence, the laser properties of the ceramic are strongly influenced by the accumulation of heat caused by pumping. In particular, we show that Nd:YAG ceramic laser emission can be switched between its two main laser lines located at 1061 and 1064 nm. Additionally, we show that the wavelength positions can also be influenced by temperature.

Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate a dual-wavelength Nd:YSAG ceramic laser in which the gain volume is structurated into two different regions providing gain at the wavelength of 1061 nm and 1064 nm respectively. We discuss the role of the nonuniform distribution of the temperature in structurating the gain region via the Boltzmann effect. We show that the two laser wavelengths can be switched by adjusting the size of the pump beam or by slightly modifying the geometrical parameters of the laser cavity, either the length of the cavity or the orientation of a mirror. Additionally, we demonstrate that the transverse modes at the two wavelengths are shaped according to the effect of gain filtering caused by the structuration of the gain region.

However, practical SWG implementations are limited by fabrication constraints, such as minimum feature size. Here, we present a new nanophotonic waveguide grating concept that exploits phase-matching engineering to suppress diffraction effects for a period three times larger than those with SWG approaches. This long-period grating not only facilitates fabrication, but also enables a new diffraction-less regime with additional degrees of freedom to control light propagation. More specifically, the proposed phase-matching engineering enables selective diffraction suppression, providing new tools to shape propagation in the grating. We harness this flexible diffraction control to yield single-mode propagation in, otherwise, highly multimode waveguides, and to implement Bragg filters that combine highly-diffractive and diffraction-less regions to dramatically increase light rejection. Capitalizing on this new concept, we experimentally demonstrate a Si membrane Bragg filter with record rejection value exceeding 60 dB. These results demonstrate the potential of the proposed long-period grating for the engineering of diffraction in nanophotonic waveguides and pave the way for the development of a new generation of high-performance Si photonics devices. Silicon photonics is widely recognized as an enabling technology for next generation optical interconnects, holding the promise of providing ultra-compact and low power consumption opto-electronic transceivers, fabricated at large volumes leveraging existing CMOS facilities 1. Driven by the impressive technological development over the recent years, silicon photonics is expanding its frontiers towards new applications beyond datacom 2. These include, among others, chemical and biological sensing 3 , radio-over-fiber 4 , spectroscopy 5 , and quantum cryptography 6. In this very diverse ecosystem, combining demanding optical interconnects with disruptive new applications , sub-wavelength grating (SWG) engineering has gained momentum due to its unmatched flexibility in controlling the propagation of light in nanophotonic devices 7,8. SWG metamaterial waveguides rely on periodic silicon patterning, with a structural period shorter than half the wavelength, to synthesize refractive index and chromatic dispersion that can, in principle, be engineered at will 9,10. Unlike photonic crystals that rely on resonant light confinement 11 , SWG waveguides operate well below the bandgap, guiding light by (synthetic) refractive index difference. This way, they provide flexible control over modal confinement, birefringence and dispersion, non-achievable in conventional waveguide arrangements, alongside with low propagation loss and remarkably wide spectral bandwidth 9,10,12,13. Abstract: Progress in integrated photonics enables the combination of several elementary functions on single substrates for the realization of advanced functionalized chips. We report a monolithic integrated quantum photonic realization on lithium niobate, where nonlinear optics and electro-optics properties have been harnessed simultaneously for generating heralded configurable, two-photon states. Taking advantage of a picosecond pump laser and telecom components, we demonstrate the production of various path-coded heralded two-photon states, showing 94% raw visibility for Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. The versatility and performance of such a highly integrated photonic entanglement source enable exploring more complex quantum information processing protocols finding application in communication, metrology and processing tasks.

Introduction Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have been exploited as an effective tool for real-time and label-free biochemical detection over these years [1]. They are used to detect the optical signal change in the reflected light beam at the sensing interface where surface plasmon polaritons are excited by the incident light. This signal change is strongly dependent on the evanescent field perturbation induced by the molecular binding at the plasmonic interface. However, the sensitivity of those sensors is not able to detect target analytes with low molecular weight (less than 400 Dalton) by the conventional angular scanning method. To overcome this challenge, we proposed an enhanced plasmonic sensing technique through the phase singularity-related Goos-Hänchen (GH) interrogation method with an enhanced zero-reflection performance by the atomically thin phase change nanomaterials [2-4]. We constructed an optimized multi-layered metallic sensing substrate based on GST and gold thin film. Experimental results show that the sensitivity in Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift has been greatly enhanced compared to pure gold substrate by more than one order of magnitude. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecules with low concentrations ranging from 10 fM to 10 μM have been successfully detected. Thus, we believe that this device has great potential in detecting chemical and biological reactions with ultra-high sensitivity especially for the clinical diagnostic usages.

Abstract: Optical fiber sensors of hydrogen gas (H2) are conventionally based on the reaction of a sensitive material deposited on the surface of a fiber. Long-term applications of H2 monitoring require more robust configurations, less sensitive to the degradations of the sensitive layer. To overcome this issue, we develop disruptive polarisation-maintaining optical fibers composed of a sensitive material (Palladium, Pd) integrated into the silica cladding. We present the development of two Panda-type optical fibers with or without embedded Pd particles. These fibers have been fabricated for evaluating, through the measurement of the birefringence, the contribution of Pd particles on the detection of H2 gas. We have specially developed a gas chamber for measuring on-line the detection of H2 during its diffusion into the fiber. Dynamic comparisons between both fibers demonstrate the contribution of Pd particles resulting in a faster response time (of about 20 h for our experimental conditions). These results pave the way to the realization of robust optical fibers with enhanced sensitivity to H2 gas for developing sensing systems compatible with long-term hydrogen monitoring applications in extreme and harsh environments, such as radioactive waste repositories.

Abstract: International audience; Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely established as a powerful analytical technique in molecular fingerprint recognition. Although conventional noble metal-based SERS substrates show admirable enhancement of the Raman signals, challenges on reproducibility, biocompatibility, and costs limit their implementations as the preferred analysis platforms. Recently, researches on SERS substrates have found that some innovatively prepared metal oxides/chalcogenides could produce noble metal comparable SERS enhancement, which profoundly expanded the material selection. Nevertheless, to tune the SERS enhancement of these materials, careful experimental designs and sophisticated processes were needed. Here, an electrically tunable SERS substrate based on tungsten oxides (WO3–x) is demonstrated. An electric field is used to introduce the defects in the oxide on an individual substrate, readily invoking the SERS detection capability, and further tuning the enhancement factor is achieved through electrical programming of the oxide leakage level. Additionally, by virtue of in situ tuning the defect density and enhancement factor, the substrate can adapt to different molecular concentrations, potentially improving the detection range. These results not only help build a better understanding of the chemical mechanism but also open an avenue for engaging non-noble metal materials as multifunctional SERS substrates.

Abstract: An enhancement of contrast between healthy and neoplastic zones in Mueller matrix images of excised cervical tissue was demonstrated in our prior work for the visible wavelength range. In this paper we present the statistical analysis of Mueller polarimetric data for the diagnostics of high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. The results of linear and non-linear post-processing compressions of the full Mueller matrix are discussed and compared in terms of diagnostic performance. The final goal of these studies is to estimate and compare the diagnostic usefulness of 16 polarimetric measurements required for the reconstruction of complete Mueller matrix of a sample, while looking for an optimal design of future imaging protocols.

Abstract: The flow of concentrated ceramic suspensions of silica nanobeads in water in cylindrical Couette flow is investigated using dynamic light scattering velocimetry, and compared to numerical simulations. The onset of Taylor vortices is found to obey Chandrasekhar’s prediction. Moreover, harmonic analysis of the velocity profiles gave an estimate of the size of the bottom layer roll, as well as the signature of the growth of higher order instabilities.

Abstract: Coherent Raman microscopy has become a powerful tool in label-free, non-destructive and fast cell imaging. Here we apply high spectral resolution multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (MCARS) microspectroscopy in the high wavenumber region to the study of the cell cycle. We show that heterochromatin - the condensed state of chromatin - can be visualised by means of the vibrational signature of proteins taking part in its condensation. Thus, we are able to identify chromosomes and their movement during mitosis, as well as structures like nucleoli and nuclear border in interphase. Furthermore, the specific organization of the endoplasmic reticulum during mitosis is highlighted. Finally, we stress that MCARS can reveal the biochemical impact of the fixative method at the cellular level. Beyond the study of the cell cycle, this work introduces a label-free imaging approach that enables the visualization of cellular processes where chromatin undergoes rearrangements.

Abstract: We demonstrated that spatial Kerr beam self-cleaning can be obtained in a highly multimode multicomponent optical fiber based on lanthanum aluminum silicate oxide glasses (SiO2-Al2O3-La2O3), which was made by using the modified powder in tube technology (MIPT). Abstract: An innovative scheme is proposed for the dynamic control of phase in two-dimensional laser beam array. It is based on a simple neural network that predicts the complex field array from the intensity of the induced scattered pattern through a phase intensity transformer made of a diffuser. Iterated phase corrections are applied on the laser field array by phase modulators via a feedback loop to set the array to prescribed phase values. A crucial feature is the use of a kind of reinforcement learning approach for the neural network training which takes account of the iterated corrections. Experiments on a proof of concept system demonstrated the high performance and scalability of the scheme with an array of up to 100 laser beams and a phase setting at 1/30 of the wavelength., 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Taylor-Couette flow of aqueous dispersions of nanometric Laponite platelets was studied by dynamic light scattering and direct observation. Despite high rotation rates, gel growth was observed starting from the stator, and filling almost the whole gap after some period of time depending on the angular velocity of the rotor. SEM microscopy observations of the flowing liquid showed the presence of spheres in the micrometer range. A mechanism for gel growth is proposed, where lumps of gel are formed in the sheared liquid and form spherical aggregates which eventually adhere to the side of the gel, with a progressing gelling front.

Abstract: [EN] Bragg filters stand as key building blocks of the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform, allowing the implementation of advanced on-chip signal manipulation. However, achieving narrowband Bragg filters with large rejection levels is often hindered by fabrication constraints and imperfections. Here, we show that the combination of single-side corrugation asymmetry and subwavelength engineering provides a narrowband response with large corrugations, overcoming minimum feature size constraints of conventional Si Bragg filters. We comprehensively study the impact of the corrugation asymmetry in conventional and subwavelength single-etched SOI Bragg filters, showing their potential for bandwidth reduction. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate novel subwavelength geometry based on shifted corrugation teeth, achieving null-to-null bandwidths and rejections of 0.8 nm and 40 dB for the symmetric configuration and 0.6 nm and 15 dB for the asymmetric case. Abstract: We overview recent advances in the spatio-temporal nonlinear dynamics of optical pulses propagating in multimode optical fibers. The Kerr effect leads to spatial beam self-cleaning in a graded-index multimode optical fiber, followed by sideband series generation spanning multiple octaves. Effectively single mode supercontinuum spanning from the visible to the mid-infrared was also demonstrated. Enhancement of Kerr beam self-cleaning was observed in active fiber with quasi-step index profile. Moreover, mutual self-cleaning was recently reported for both the fundamental and the second harmonic beams in optically poled multimode fibers with cubic and quadratic nonlinearity.

Abstract: The rise of optical biopsy as an alternative to classical biopsy is dictated by ongoing technological progress: any type of measurements has to be fast, precise, non-invasive and implemented in-vivo. The use of polarized light for optical biopsy has a long history. As Mueller-Stokes formalism provides the most complete description of polarized light interaction with any type of sample (even depolarizing one) we explored the capabilities of in-house multi-wavelength Mueller imaging polarimeter for the detection of pre-malignancy and malignancy. Our studies were performed with both scattering phantom tissues (in transmission configuration) and specimens of human colon and uterine cervix (in backscattering configuration). For the interpretation of measurement results we decomposed Mueller matrix of a sample into product of elementary Mueller matrices of homogeneous diattenuator, retarder, and depolarizer. This phenomenological approach does not require the exact solution of Maxwell equations and provides the “effective” values of polarimetric properties of sample. Exploring differential Mueller matrix formalism for fluctuating medium we showed that depolarization in homogeneous turbid medium varied parabolically with the pathlength of transmitted light, while the standard deviation of elementary polarization properties of medium depends linearly on the concentration of scatterers. Neither scattering phantoms nor human tissue possessed any measurable diattenuation in backscattering configuration. The polarimetric images of tissue depolarization power, scalar birefringence and orientation of optical axis were compared with the analysis of histological slides. The spectral dependence of depolarization power and scalar birefringence values ascertained the potential of imaging Mueller polarimetry to discriminate healthy and diseased tissue zones.

Abstract: International audience; Rubidium vapor is loaded into hypocycloidal core shaped Kagome hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) with the wall of its inner core coated with aluminosilicate ceramic (sol-gel). We show that the presence of Rb vapor is maintained for a longer duration when compared to uncoated Kagome HC-PCF. Rb vapor within the hollow-core of a sol-gel coated Kagome HC-PCF is preserved for over 500 h after the source of Rb is halted. And Rb vapor is detected in the sol-gel coated HC-PCF for more than 80 h after the background Rb vapor signal is no longer observed.

Abstract: International audience; High-voltage (HV) ultrashort pulse technologies have found many applications in areas such as medicine, biology, food processing, environmental science and defense. Some applications are dependent on the pulse parameters such as duration, amplitude, shape, as well as the number of pulses applied and the frequency rate. Generators that can produce powerful electrical pulses with adjustable duration, amplitude and shape are convenient but still unusual. In this paper, we present and characterize a robust and versatile generator built on the frozen wave generator concept using photoconductive semiconductor switches. The results show that the generator can produce pulses of various shapes, peak-to-peak amplitudes up to 13.1 kV, maximum amplitudes of 6.9 kV and with durations in the nanosecond and subnanosecond range. Intense subnanosecond pulses have recently gained attention due to their potential ability to reach cells interior.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of new generation instruments for astronomical interferometer, we have developed in laboratory a new kind of optical interferometer using the frequency conversion of the star light. We investigate the sensitivity limit and reliability of our so-called upconversion interferometer when operating in photon counting mode. For this purpose, we have implemented a laboratory test bench including two three-arm interferometers dedicated to high angular resolution imaging. The first classical one works at the same wavelength as the laboratory star (infrared) and operates with high optical flux levels (used as a reference interferometer). The second one, under test, uses sum frequency generation process in a non-linear optical waveguide placed on each arm to shift the wavelength of the infrared laboratory star to the visible domain. The observables are obtained in photon counting operation, involving signal processing to recover unbiased data. The reference measurement (high flux complex visibilities in infrared) and the upconversion interferometer observables (complex visibilities obtained in photon counting regime) are in good agreement. We notice a degradation on the phase closure terms reliability for low values of the triple product (bispectrum). We estimate from the experimental results the related limiting magnitude for several configurations using an upconversion interferometer.
