Exploration of secondary resources for isolation of valuable constituents, such as rare earth elements (REEs) and trace elements (TEs), is of importance owing to the need to identify new domestic sources and reduce reliance on imports. The present study systematically discusses the distribution of REEs and TEs in core samples from the coal block of Bhalukasba Surni {(B1(125 m)-B9 (409 m)} located in Rajmahal coalfield, Jharkhand, India, which has not been investigated previously for its geochemistry. The studied coal samples were found to be enriched in TEs whose abundances were in the order of Mn > Mo > Zr > Ni > Cr > V > Cu > Zn > Pb, and REEs (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) along with Sc and Y. The average concentration of REEs with yttrium (ΣREY) on an ash basis was 528 ppm, which is significantly higher than the world average for coal ash (435 ppm). Of the samples investigated, B3 (182–184 m) and B8 (396–399 m) demonstrated relatively higher concentrations of potentially economic elements, with B3 containing a higher proportion of middle to heavy REEs Gd, Dy, Ho and Er, and B8 showing relative enrichment in Nd and Y. On dry whole coal basis, B6 (275–278 m) showed a considerably higher concentration of Ge (55 ppm) than other samples, whereas the concentration of Zr varied in the range of 90–160 ppm in the whole coal block. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the presence of quartz, keatite, hematite, zircon, anatase and orthoclase in the coal ash samples prepared at 815 °C. REEs exhibited prominent positive correlation with Al2O3 (0.4 < r > 0.9) which is supportive of their residence in primary clay minerals such as kaolinite and illite-smectite. Additionally, a positive correlation of REEs with P2O5 (0.4 < r > 0.9) suggests their association with phosphate minerals (such as monazite, xenotime, apatite). Positive correlation with TiO2 (r > 0.7) corroborates the possible association of REEs with anatase. The morphology of the coal ash samples viewed in SEM showed the presence of Al2O3 and SiO2 enriched irregular-sponge particles likely derived from partly-fused clay minerals, which accounted for the lower extent of REE encapsulation. The Bhalukasba Surni coal block is potentially of economic importance due to its enrichment in Ge, Zr, and the REEs. The Rochester Mineralogical Symposium (RMS) was a prominent event in specimen mineralogy for over five decades, featuring talks, technical sessions, publications, exhibits, and auctions that advanced the field. Shark cartilage presents a complex material composed of collagen, proteoglycans, and bioapatite. In the present study, we explored the link between microstructure, chemical composition, and biomechanical function of shark vertebral cartilage using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Confocal Raman Microspectroscopy, and Nanoindentation. Our investigation focused on vertebrae from Blacktip and Shortfin Mako sharks. As typical representatives of the orders Carcharhiniformes and Lamniformes, these species differ in preferred habitat, ecological role, and swimming style. We observed structural variations in mineral organization and collagen fiber arrangement using PLM and AFM. In both sharks, the highly calcified corpus calcarea shows a ridged morphology, while a chain-like network is present in the less mineralized intermedialia. Raman spectromicroscopy demonstrates a relative increase of glucosaminocycans (GAGs) with respect to collagen and a decrease in mineral-rich zones, underlining the role of GAGs in modulating bioapatite mineralization. Region-specific testing confirmed that intravertebral variations in mineral content and arrangement result in distinct nanomechanical properties. Local Young's moduli from mineralized regions exceeded bulk values by a factor of 10. Overall, this work provides profound insights into a flexible yet strong biocomposite, which is crucial for the extraordinary speed of cartilaginous fish in the worlds' oceans. Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex auto-immune disease characterized by vascular damage, inflammation, fibrosis and calcinosis, where pulmonary involvement is the leading cause of mortality. Calciprotein particles (CPPs) are increasingly formed upon disbalance of the physiological mineral buffering system and induce pro-inflammatory effects. This exploratory study investigated whether functional indicators of the endogenous mineral buffering system are dysregulated in SSc and linked to disease activity. Methods: T50 (calciprotein crystallization test or serum calcification propensity) and hydrodynamic radius of secondary CPPs (CPP2) were determined in serum samples from 78 SSc patients and 44 controls without SSc, and were associated with disease activity markers of SSc. Results: T50 was reduced and CPP2 radius was increased in SSc patients as compared to controls, indicating a deranged mineral buffering system. This was accompanied by slightly higher serum phosphate and PTH levels in SSc patients, while iFGF23 was not significantly modified. Longitudinally, all parameters remained unchanged over time in SSc patients, only iFGF23 increased. While the modified Rodnan skin score showed some inconsistent correlations with mineral buffering indicators, their association was not independent of other factors. However, lower T50 was significantly correlated to reduced lung diffusion capacity and this association remained significant in a multivariate linear regression model. Conclusion: This study provides indications for a disturbed mineral buffering system in SSc. Increased serum calcification propensity (lower T50) is correlated with impaired lung diffusion capacity, suggesting a possible role of deranged mineral buffering in disease progression. Practical Application The remarkable nutritional attributes and potential health advantages of quinoa make it an important candidate for developing innovative ready‐to‐eat food products. This work aimed to develop a functional ready‐to‐eat snack based on quinoa sourdough fermented by Lactiplantibacillus (L.) plantarum CRL 1964. Phytate, phosphates, and soluble mineral content (Fe, Mn, Zn, Mg, Ca, and P) were determined in snacks formulated with sourdough and control doughs. An in vitro digestion model was performed on quinoa snacks to assess their mineral bioaccessibility and dialyzability. Phytate content was significantly lower (ca. 42.3%) while phosphates were higher (ca. eightfold) in quinoa‐based sourdough and sourdough‐based snacks (S1964) than in controls. Soluble minerals were higher (10.2%–32.0%) in S1964 than in controls. Mineral bioaccessibility and mineral dialyzability were also higher (ca. 24.5%) among S1964 and control snacks. The developed quinoa snack made from sourdough fermented by L. plantarum CRL 1964 had less phytate concentration and high bioaccessibility of minerals. These findings underscore the relevance of this innovative technology in creating food products that are not only highly nutritious but also represent a valuable contribution to the market of healthy foods.In this study, a novel snack based on quinoa sourdough with improved nutritional properties was developed. The addition of quinoa sourdough fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CRL 1964 to the preparation of quinoa snacks resulted in a product with a lower concentration of phytate and a higher content of phosphates and minerals (soluble, bioaccessible, and dialyzable). Coal resources represent an important potential source for the future extraction of rare earth elements (REEs). This study, combining microscopic characterization techniques and experimental analysis, investigates the occurrence characteristics of REEs in coal gangue and the roasting activation mechanisms. The study reveals that phosphate minerals are the primary carriers of REEs, and sequential chemical extraction results further confirm the close association between REEs and phosphate minerals. Roasting at around 600°C facilitates the release of REEs from organic matter and clay minerals like kaolinite, significantly improving leaching efficiency. Under leaching conditions of 20 g/L, 50°C, 0.5 M HCl, and 1000 RPM, the leaching of REEs can reach approximately 80%. However, when the roasting temperature exceeds 1000°C, the formation of mullite leads to mineral surface sintering, reducing the recovery of REEs. This study emphasizes the importance of optimizing roasting conditions and understanding mineral phase changes to maximize REEs recovery, which is crucial for sustainable resource management and environmental remediation. Aim: Klotho, a key component of the endocrine fibroblast growth factor receptor—fibroblast growth factor axis, is a multi‐functional protein that impacts renal electrolyte handling. The physiological significance of Klotho will be highlighted in the regulation of calcium, phosphate, and potassium metabolism. Methods: In this review, we compare several murine models with different renal targeted deletions of Klotho and the insights into the molecular and physiological function that these models offer. Results: In vivo, Klotho deficiency is associated with severely impaired mineral metabolism, with consequences on growth, longevity and disease development. Additionally, we explore the perspectives of Klotho in renal pathology and vascular events, as well as potential Klotho treatment options. Conclusion: This comprehensive review emphasizes the use of Klotho to shed light on deciphering the renal molecular in vivo mechanisms in electrolyte handling, as well as novel therapeutic interventions. Phosphorus is a key element for identifying past human activity. Recently, phosphorus analyses have been extended to archaeological objects, aiming at distinguishing how depositional contexts contribute to its enrichment. In archaeological pottery, phosphorus might depend on several manufacturing and postdepositional processes (i.e., addition of organic temper, pigments, diagenetic incorporation). We analyzed by XRD, XRF, and mid-infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy 178 pots from eight NW Spain archaeological sites. These sites encompass different chronologies, contexts, and local geology. The phosphorus content was highly variable (224–27,722 mg kg−1) overall but also between archeological sites (1644 ± 487 to 13,635 ± 6623 mg kg−1) and within archaeological sites (4–36, max/min ratio). No phosphate minerals were identified by XRD nor FTIR-ATR, but correlations between phosphorus content and MIR absorbances showed maxima at 1515 and 980 cm−1, suggesting the presence of two sources: one organic (i.e., phosphorylated aromatic compounds) and another inorganic (i.e., albite and K-feldspar). Phosphorylated aromatics were most likely formed during pottery firing and were preserved due to their high resistance to temperature and oxidation. Meanwhile, albite and K-feldspar are among the P-bearing minerals with higher P concentrations. Algerian natural phosphate minerals (N-PH) were subjected to milling and subsequent heat treatment, followed by comprehensive characterization. The resulting powder and samples underwent analysis using TG/DTA, XRD, FTIR, and FESEM techniques, with structural refinement performed through the Rietveld method. Upon heat treatment at 1100 °C, a predominant apatite phase, fluorapatite (FAP), was identified, constituting 98.75 % of the composition. Initially, the N-PH comprised francolite and carbonate co-substituted fluorapatites, alongside a few impurities. The dielectric and electrical properties of the fluorapatite (FAp) compound were examined using complex impedance spectroscopy over a frequency range of 0.1–106 Hz. Conductivity tests of the ceramic were conducted across a temperature range from 50 to 400 °C. An observed decrease in the real and imaginary components of the dielectric constant with increasing frequency, contrasted with an increase with rising temperature. Furthermore, discrepancies between the frequencies at which the imaginary component of the modulus and impedance reached their peaks indicated the presence of a relaxation process not of the Debye type. The imperative to enhance the quality of precast concrete is evident, with a particular focus on augmenting its physical and mechanical attributes by incorporating concrete admixtures. This research centers on the utilization of phosphate minerals and finely ground glass within concrete mixes, with substitution ratios ranging from 15% to 60% of fine sand within the mix. The investigation encompasses multiple facets, including examining material blending, assessing fresh concrete properties (slump), and evaluating both physical and mechanical characteristics of hardened concrete at 7-day and 28-day intervals, juxtaposed against the properties of a control concrete mix. The findings reveal several significant outcomes. Firstly, the incorporation of phosphate minerals leads to a remarkable increase in the slump of concrete, reaching 75mm, in stark contrast to the 20mm slump observed in the control mix. Conversely, introducing fine glass elevates the slump to 60mm while maintaining a constant water-to-cement ratio of 0.48 across all concrete mixtures. Furthermore, the density of the hardened concrete demonstrates notable variations. The control mix boasts a density of 2375kg/m3, whereas the phosphate minerals and fine ground glass result in reduced densities of 2258kg/m3 and 2100kg/m3, respectively, at the 7-day and 28-day intervals. In terms of compressive strength, the 7-day results indicate a decrease to 8MPa with the use of phosphate and fine ground glass minerals, compared to the 13MPa strength observed in the control mix. At the same time, the compressive strength increases to 21MPa for phosphate "Shedyah," compared to 20MPa for the control mix. Phosphate "Abiad" and fine ground glass yield compressive strengths of 15MPa and 16MPa, respectively, at the 28-day mark. Regarding tensile strength, the 7-day figures reveal 1.25MPa for the control mix, and the introduction of phosphate materials results in both increases and decreases, with values remaining similar to the control mix. Conversely, the 28-day tensile strength diminishes to 2.75MPa and 2.5MPa for "Shedyah" and "Abiad," respectively, in contrast to the 3.5MPa exhibited by the control mix. The use of fine ground glass materials results in a tensile strength of 1.8MPa. Lastly, the flexural strength of the control mix stands at 2.5MPa, a value that can be maintained with "Shedyah" phosphate but reduces to 2MPa when "Abiad" phosphate is introduced. Fine ground glass fines maintain a flexural strength of 1.5MPa at 7-day, compared to the 3.25MPa of the control mix, with subsequent fluctuations resulting in strengths of 2.75MPa for "Shedyah" phosphate, 2.5MPa for "Abiad" phosphate, and 2.25MPa for ground glass fines. Ermeloite is a new aluminium phosphate mineral from Galicia, Spain, in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It is the third formally recognised mineral discovered in Galicia since morenosite and cervantite in the 19th Century. The name and symbol (Erm) were approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA2021–017a) in recognition of the geographical location where it was found. The mineral occurs as a light blue to white fine aggregate over quartz and microcline associated with wardite. Crystals of ~0.04 mm are transparent and have a waxy lustre. The simplified empirical formula determined using electron microprobe analysis is Al1.02P0.95F0.06O3.88⋅1.06 H2O, which is near to the ideal formula Al(PO4)⋅H2O. The mineral is an alteration product within a phosphate pegmatite. Ermeloite is the second phosphate isostructural with the sulfates of the kieserite group. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed that ermeloite crystallises in the monoclinic C 2/ c space group with cell parameters a = 6.5371(4) Å, b = 7.5670(5) Å, c = 7.1146(5) Å, β = 115.335(2)°, V = 318.08(4) Å3 and Z = 4 at room temperature. Vivianite, an authigenic mineral from the phosphate class, was discovered in Kara Sea bottom sediments for the first time. Similar finds of vivianite were previously known only for the outer shelf of the Laptev Sea, the northern Barents Sea, and the eastern White Sea. Its presence in the subsurface sedimentary strata indicates desalinization of the surface layer of the sea. Core 7444, sampled in a tectonic depression in the Kara Sea during the first stage of cruise 89 of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh (2022), uncovered Holocene sedimentary strata up to 6.19 m thick. Coarse-silty and sandy vivianite formations are found throughout the entire core, starting from 0.11 m. Vivianite was investigated by a set of methods: optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The morphology, microstructures, and chemical composition of vivianite formations have been studied. Phosphate ore is the dominating natural resource for the production of fertilizers and phosphorous chemical products. Flotation is the most widely employed technique to enrich apatite and remove the impurities for the separation of the phosphate ore. The flotation reagents play an important role in this efficient separation of phosphate ores. In the last few decades, great progress has been achieved in the flotation reagents for phosphate ores. However, a critical review on this theme has rarely been reported in recent years. Thus, the goal of this paper is to critically analyze the published literature on the flotation reagents for phosphate ores, mainly ranging from 2010 to 2024, including the regulators, depressors, collectors, and frothers. Additionally, the interaction mechanisms between the reagents and mineral surfaces were analyzed. It is concluded that sulfuric acids and its derivatives play a leading role in the depression of phosphate minerals. Highly selective biobased depressants have become potential carbonate inhibitors. Additionally, the derivatization and synthesis of multi-functional compounds and identifying the biobased frothers are the main development trends of collectors and frothers. Overall, a high-quality concentrate with a 31.05% grade and 98.21% recovery at pH 5 was achieved using lecithin as an ecofriendly amphoteric collector and sulfuric acid as the depressor when the feed contained 24.49% P2O5, which was superior to other flotation indexes of similar phosphate ores. Banded iron formations (BIFs) archive the relationship between Earth's lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere through time. However, constraints on the origin of Earth's largest ore deposits, hosted by BIFs, are limited by the absence of direct geochronology. Without this temporal context, genetic models cannot be correlated with tectono-thermal and atmospheric drivers responsible for BIF upgrading through time. Utilizing in situ iron oxide U-Pb geochronology, we provide a direct timeline of events tracing development of all the giant BIF-hosted hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province (Pilbara Craton, Western Australia). Direct dating demonstrates that the major iron ore deposits in the region formed during 1.4 to 1.1 Ga. This is one billion to hundreds of millions of years later than previous age constraints based upon 1) the presence of hematite ore clasts in conglomerate beds deposited before ~1.84 Ga, and 2) phosphate mineral dating, which placed the onset of iron mineralization in the Province at ~2.2 to 2.0 Ga during the great oxidation event. Dating of the hematite clasts verified the occurrence of a ~2.2 to 2.0 Ga event, reflecting widespread, but now largely eroded iron mineralization occurring when the Pilbara and Kaapvaal cratons were proximal. No existing phosphate mineral dates overlap with obtained hematite dates and therefore cannot be related to hematite crystallization and ore formation. New geochronology conclusively links all major preserved hematite deposits to a far younger (1.4 to 1.1 Ga) formation period, correlated with the amalgamation of Australia following breakup of the Columbia supercontinent. Chitosan (CS), a biopolymer, holds significant potential in bone regeneration due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability attributes. While crustacean-derived CS is conventionally used in research, there is growing interest in fungal-derived CS for its equally potent properties in bone regenerative applications. Here, we investigated the physicochemical and biological characteristics of fungal (MDC) and crustacean (ADC)-derived CS scaffolds embedded with different concentrations of tricalcium phosphate minerals (TCP), i.e., 0(wt)%: ADC/MDC-1, 10(wt)%: ADC/MDC-2, 20(wt)%: ADC/MDC-3 and 30(wt)%: ADC/MDC-4. ADC-1 and MDC-1 lyophilised scaffolds lacking TCP minerals presented the highest zeta potentials of 47.3 ± 1.2 mV and 55.1 ± 1.6 mV, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy revealed prominent distinctions whereby MDC scaffolds exhibited striation-like structural microarchitecture in contrast to the porous morphology exhibited by ADC scaffold types. With regard to the 4-week scaffold mass reductions, MDC-1, MDC-2, MDC-3, and MDC-4 indicated declines of 55.98 ± 4.2%, 40.16 ± 3.6%, 27.05 ± 4.7%, and 19.16 ± 5.3%, respectively. Conversely, ADC-1, ADC-2, ADC-3, and ADC-4 presented mass reductions of 35.78 ± 5.1%, 25.19 ± 4.2%, 20.23 ± 6.3%, and 13.68 ± 5.4%, respectively. The biological performance of the scaffolds was assessed through in vitro bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cell (BMMSCs) attachment via indirect and direct cytotoxicity studies, where all scaffold types presented no cytotoxic behaviours. MDC scaffolds indicated results comparable to ADC, where both CS types exhibited similar physiochemical properties. The processes of determining the efficiency of Dawex Marathon WBA anionites in removing phosphates from water and creating waste-free processes for their regeneration were studied. In the course of an experimental study of sorption, model solutions of polluted water containing phosphates in a concentration of 40-100 mg dm-3 were passed through the low-based Dawex Marathon WBA anionite in chloride form. The dependence of TDEC on pH and temperature was established when filtering through low-base anionite DOWEX MARATHON WBA in chloride form. An important aspect of the research was the determination of the principles of extracting phosphates in the form of mineral fertilizer during repeated use of regeneration solutions. The processes of anionite regeneration have been studied. Regeneration of anionite was carried out with two solutions, in parallel, namely - 10 % solutions of sodium chloride, 10 % solution of ammonium chloride. Vertebrates use the phosphate mineral apatite in their skeletons, which allowed them to develop tissues such as enamel, characterized by an outstanding combination of hardness and elasticity. It has been hypothesized that the evolution of the earliest vertebrate skeletal tissues, found in the teeth of the extinct group of conodonts, was driven by adaptation to dental function. We test this hypothesis quantitatively and demonstrate that the crystallographic order increased throughout the early evolution of conodont teeth in parallel with morphological adaptation to food processing. With the c-axes of apatite crystals oriented perpendicular to the functional feeding surfaces, the strongest resistance to uniaxial compressional stress is conferred along the long axes of denticles. Our results support increasing control over biomineralization in the first skeletonized vertebrates and allow us to test models of functional morphology and material properties across conodont dental diversity. Conodonts, early vertebrates, are thought to have evolved complex tooth tissue as an adaptation for feeding. Biodegradable scaffolds are needed to repair bone defects. To promote the resorption of scaffolds, a large surface area is required to encourage neo-osteogenesis. Herein, we describe the synthesis and freeze-drying methodologies of ferric-ion (Fe3+) doped Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate mineral (DCPD), also known as brushite, which has been known to favour the in situ condition for osteogenesis. In this investigation, the role of chitosan during the synthesis of DCPD was explored to enhance the antimicrobial, scaffold pore distribution, and mechanical properties post freeze-drying. During the synthesis of DCPD, the calcium nitrate solution was hydrolysed with a predetermined stoichiometric concentration of ammonium phosphate. During the hydrolysis reaction, 10 (mol)% iron (Fe3+) nitrate (Fe(NO3)3) was incorporated, and the DCPD minerals were precipitated (Fe3+-DCPD). Chitosan stir-mixed with Fe3+-DCPD minerals was freeze-dried to create scaffolds. The structural, microstructural, and mechanical properties of freeze-dried materials were characterized. This paper reviews the phosphate phases in meteorites and those measured by landed spacecraft, what they reveal about past igneous and aqueous conditions on Mars, and important implications for potential prebiotic chemistry, past habitability, and potential biosignatures that could be detected in samples returned from Mars. A review of the 378 martian meteorites as of 2023 indicate that of the two most common phosphate minerals in Mars meteorites, merrillite and apatites, the apatite composition is largely F- and Cl-rich, with shergottites containing more OH. The phosphate concentrations examined across multiple missions show a relatively narrow range of phosphate, with higher concentrations observed in the Mount Sharp Group in Gale crater and Wishstone at Gusev crater and lower concentrations observed at Jezero crater floor and Jezero fan. Possible secondary phosphates detected on Mars, including Fe phosphates at Jezero crater and Gusev crater and Ca- and Al-bearing secondary phosphates, temperatures of formation of secondary phases and their dissolution rates and solubilities are reviewed and summarized. Despite this wealth of information about phosphates on Mars, due to their fine scale and relatively low concentrations, Mars Sample Return is needed to better understand phosphate and its implications for the igneous, aqueous, and astrobiological history of Mars. It is of great importance to evaluate simple methods to identify mineral occurrence for the future development of society. Applying a reconnaissance magnetic data analysis can help detect the main structural trends mounted to the occurrence of minerals. In this study, geological and geophysical data were analyzed to evaluate the main structural trends affecting mineralization in the area of Wadi El-Nakheel. Geomagnetic data were processed to remove the earth's magnetic field and reduce the magnetic pole. Some mathematical filters related to detecting and enhancing boundaries between rock units, depending on their magnetization affinity, were applied, including the first vertical derivative, the analytic signal, and 3D Euler deconvolution. After structural analysis of these data, we reached the following findings: The main structural trends from the surface and subsurface estimations were the northwest–southeast trend and the northeast–southwest trend. The orientation and origin of Wadi El-Nakheel are aligned with the main structural trend affecting the area that formed during the Red Sea Rift movement and the Pan-African orogeny. The depth of the deep-seated structure controlling the valley is 1500 m and all mineral occurrence is mainly structurally controlled in the studied area; phosphate ore outcrops are usually aligned with the northwest–southeast geological trend, and metallic ores are related to basement rock succession and the main dominant geological structures in the studied area. Endophytic bacteria, recognized as eco-friendly biofertilizers, have demonstrated the potential to enhance crop growth and yield. While the plant growth-promoting effects of endophytic bacteria have been extensively studied, the impact of weed endophytes remains less explored. In this study, we aimed to isolate endophytic bacteria from native weeds and assess their plant growth-promoting abilities in rice under varying chemical fertilization. The evaluation encompassed measurements of mineral phosphate and potash solubilization, as well as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production activity by the selected isolates. Two promising strains, tentatively identified as Alcaligenes faecalis (BTCP01) from Eleusine indica (Goose grass) and Metabacillus indicus (BTDR03) from Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass) based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, exhibited noteworthy phosphate and potassium solubilization activity, respectively. BTCP01 demonstrated superior phosphate solubilizing activity, while BTDR03 exhibited the highest potassium (K) solubilizing activity. Both isolates synthesized IAA in the presence of L-tryptophan, with the detection of nifH and ipdC genes in their genomes. Application of isolates BTCP01 and BTDR03 through root dipping and spraying at the flowering stage significantly enhanced the agronomic performance of rice variety CV. BRRI dhan29. Notably, combining both strains with 50% of recommended N, P, and K fertilizer doses led to a substantial increase in rice grain yields compared to control plants receiving 100% of recommended doses. Taken together, our results indicate that weed endophytic bacterial strains BTCP01 and BTDR03 hold promise as biofertilizers, potentially reducing the dependency on chemical fertilizers by up to 50%, thereby fostering sustainable rice production. Vivianite is a hydrous Fe(II) phosphate mineral found in anoxic environments that plays an integral role in P cycling and environmental biogeochemistry. Imbued in the vivianite literature dating as far back as 1918 is the notion that vivianite is light-sensitive and susceptible to rapid photooxidation induced entirely by solar light. However, despite an exhaustive search, to our knowledge this conventionally accepted assumption has never been directly tested, nor has the band gap ever been measured. Resolving this question of photochemical control of vivianite redox chemistry is important for performing and interpreting experiments involving vivianite reactivity with contaminants, and potentially iron and phosphate cycling in the photic zone of aquatic systems. The present study was specifically designed to address this question. Pure synthetic vivianite samples were irradiated in aqueous suspensions with a Xe lamp at conditions mimicking the solar spectrum and compared to dark controls. Particles stirred in anoxic suspensions for up to 66 days showed no detectable oxidation irrespective of light exposure, according to colorimetric Fe(II)/Fe(III) assays, micro X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. In contrast, the same experiment performed using air-equilibrated suspensions showed systematic oxidation of up to ∼80 mol% Fe(II) at 66 days, but again with no detectable light exposure effect. To test for UV reactivity, further experiments on vivianite powders under air versus N 2 atmosphere were performed using a Hg lamp with a longpass filter. In contrast to oxidation in air where no effect of light was detected, after 24 h irradiation anoxically, an additional 0.8 % Fe was oxidized compared to dark controls, and after 13 days only an additional 0.3 % Fe was oxidized. The band gap of pure vivianite was measured by the Tauc method to be 3.5 eV. Contrary to previous reports, solar light has minimal impact on the oxidation of pure vivianite; any such effect would be insignificant when compared to its relatively fast oxidation by oxygen exposure. As such, light does not need to be excluded when running typical vivianite laboratory experiments. Long-term storage of natural vivianite in museums or private collections should continue protective measures given that a possible photocatalytic role of impurities cannot yet be ruled out. Nonetheless, at all depths in natural aquatic systems, including the photic zone, it appears that the primary abiotic control on the reactivity and half-life of vivianite particles would be the dissolved oxygen concentration, not light exposure. Umhlatuzana rockshelter is known for its continuous record of Middle and Later Stone Age lithic assemblages. This study presents multiproxy geoarchaeological data (micromorphology, X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy) to reconstruct the depositional and post‐depositional history of the site. Although the Stone Age deposits macroscopically appear homogeneous, micromorphological analysis reveals the existence of primary, unaltered depositional microlayering throughout the sequence. Sediments related to combustion activities on‐site are observed in both the Holocene and Pleistocene deposits. Post‐depositional geochemical alterations result in the formation of several phosphatic minerals that significantly affect the site's preservation conditions. One of those is vashegyite, a rare magnesium phosphate mineral related to acidic and moist sedimentary environments. Bioturbation features are prominent at the microscale, but sediment mixing does not seem to affect the vertical distribution of the artifacts. The observation of horizontal microlayering in both the Pleistocene and Holocene illuminates the dominant mechanism of sedimentation throughout the site's 70,000‐year occupational history. Modeling the behavior of trace elements during lunar magma ocean solidification is important to further our understanding of the chemical evolution of the Moon. Lunar magma ocean evolution models rely on consistent datasets on how trace elements partition between a lunar silicate melt and coexisting minerals at different pressures, temperatures, and redox conditions. Here we report new experimental trace element partition coefficients (D) between clinopyroxene (cpx), pigeonite, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, olivine (ol), and silicate melt at conditions relevant for the lunar magma ocean. The data include Dcpx−melt at ambient and high pressures (1.5 GPa and 1310 °C), and partition coefficients at ambient pressure for pig, opx, ol, and pl. Overall, clinopyroxene is a phase that may control the fractionation of key geochemical trace element ratios, such as Lu/Hf and Sm/Nd, during the evolution of the lunar magma ocean. We explore the impact of the new silicate Dmineral−melt on the trace element evolution of the lunar magma ocean and we find that accessory phosphate minerals, such as apatite or whitlockite are of critical importance to explain the observed trace element and isotopic signature of the KREEP reservoir on the Moon. The new partition coefficients were applied to calculate the trace element evolution of the residual melts of the crystallizing lunar magma ocean and we propose a new trace element composition for the urKREEP reservoir. This study aims to develop multi-functional bio-safe dental resin composites with capabilities for mineralization, high in vitro biocompatibility, and anti-biofilm properties. To address this issue, experimental resin composites consisting of UDMA/TEGDMA-based dental resins and low quantities (1.9, 3.8, and 7.7 vol%) of 45S5 bioactive glass (BAG) particles were developed. To evaluate cellular responses of resin composites, MC3T3-E1 cells were (1) exposed to the original composites extracts, (2) cultured directly on the freshly cured resin composites, or (3) cultured on preconditioned composites that have been soaked in deionized water (DI water), a cell culture medium (MEM), or a simple HEPES-containing artificial remineralization promotion (SHARP) solution for 14 days. Cell adhesion, cell viability, and cell differentiation were, respectively, assessed. In addition, the anti-biofilm properties of BAG-loaded resin composites regarding bacterial viability, biofilm thickness, and biofilm morphology, were assessed for the first time. In vitro biological results demonstrated that cell metabolic activity and ALP expression were significantly diminished when subjected to composite extracts or direct contact with the resin composites containing BAG fillers. However, after the preconditioning treatments in MEM and SHARP solutions, the biomimetic calcium phosphate minerals on 7.7 vol% BAG-loaded composites revealed unimpaired or even better cellular processes, including cell adhesion, cell proliferation, and early cell differentiation. Furthermore, resin composites with 1.9, 3.8, and 7.7 vol% BAG could not only reduce cell viability in S. mutans biofilm on the composite surface but also reduce the biofilm thickness and bacterial aggregations. This phenomenon was more evident in BAG7.7 due to the high ionic osmotic pressure and alkaline microenvironment caused by BAG dissolution. This study concludes that multi-functional bio-safe resin composites with mineralization and anti-biofilm properties can be achieved by adding low quantities of BAG into the resin system, which offers promising abilities to mineralize as well as prevent caries without sacrificing biological activity. Biologically-controlled mineralization producing organic-inorganic composites (hard skeletons) by metazoan biomineralizers has been an evolutionary innovation since the earliest Cambrian. Among them, linguliform brachiopods are one of the key invertebrates that secrete calcium phosphate minerals to build their shells. One of the most distinct shell structures is the organo-phosphatic cylindrical column exclusive to phosphatic-shelled brachiopods, including both crown and stem groups. However, the complexity, diversity, and biomineralization processes of these microscopic columns are far from clear in brachiopod ancestors. Here, exquisitely well-preserved columnar shell ultrastructures are reported for the first time in the earliest eoobolids Latusobolus xiaoyangbaensis gen. et sp. nov. and Eoobolus acutulus sp. nov. from the Cambrian Series 2 Shuijingtuo Formation of South China. The hierarchical shell architectures, epithelial cell moulds, and the shape and size of cylindrical columns are scrutinised in these new species. Their calcium phosphate-based biomineralized shells are mainly composed of stacked sandwich columnar units. The secretion and construction of the stacked sandwich model of columnar architecture, which played a significant role in the evolution of linguliforms, is highly biologically controlled and organic-matrix mediated. Furthermore, a continuous transformation of anatomic features resulting from the growth of diverse columnar shells is revealed between Eoobolidae, Lingulellotretidae, and Acrotretida, shedding new light on the evolutionary growth and adaptive innovation of biomineralized columnar architecture among early phosphatic-shelled brachiopods during the Cambrian explosion. The world's second occurrence of the recently described manganrockbridgeite was found in a mineral assemblage in the Jocão (Cigana) pegmatite, Conselheiro Pena district, Minas Gerais (Brazil). Manganrockbridgeite forms green botryoidal- -crystalline crusts with a velvety surface covering the walls of leached cavities in triphylite replaced by correianevesite and Mn-rich vivianite. The outer zone is significantly richer in Mn than the inner zone where the manganrockbridgeite passes to frondelite. Other associated minerals are hureaulite and kenngottite-like phosphate. Empirical formulae based on EPMA, Mössbauer and XPS spectroscopy are (Mn1.36 Fe2+ 0.46Fe3+ 0.09Ca0.03 Mg0.01 · 0.05)Σ2.00 Fe3+ 2.95(PO4)3.00(OH)3.84(H2O)1.16 for the outer zone and (Mn1.03Fe2+ 0.49Fe3+0.29Ca0.03 Mg0.02 · 0.14)Σ2.00Fe3+ 2.94(PO4)3.00 (OH)3.81 (H2O)1.19 for the inner zone of aggregates. Raman spectra and assignment of individual decomposed bands to vibrational modes show a good agreement with data published for frondelite from the Jocão locality. Powder diffraction data of the studied manganrockbridgeite correspond to the type material from Hagendorf-Süd, Germany. Phosphorous (P) is an essential element for plant growth and development, and its scarcity is a severe crop output constraint. Determination of total P in soil and fertilizers is very important in agriculture as the amount of P is related to crop production. Rock phosphate (RP) is an excellent natural source of P widely used for P fertilizer production. The objective of this study was to compare two different digestion methods, microwave digestion and hot plate digestion, and to evaluate the performance of two analytical techniques, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and colorimetry (UV-VIS), for measuring total P in imported RP samples. The validation of microwave digestion followed by analysis in ICP-MS was performed. Phosphorus has detection and quantification limits of 1 mg L−1 and 5 mg L−1 respectively through ICP-MS analysis. Average P recovery was found 92.12–96.53%. Precision in terms of intra-day (%RSDR = 2.76–5.98 evaluated using ICP-MS) and inter-day (%RSDr = 2.92–6.75) were found to be within the acceptable range (20%), indicating consistency of the proposed method to determine total-P over traditional UV-VIS method. The combination of microwave-assisted digestion and ICP-MS offers superior efficiency in determining both phosphorus (P) and heavy metals, including aluminum, iron, zinc, cadmium, strontium, manganese and chromium, in RP samples. Currently, the processing of beige and black phosphates only concerns the main sub-layers, while the other sublayers (lower and upper for beige phosphate and the upper for black phosphate) are considered waste rock and stored near the complex. Therefore, the object of this research is the use of mixtures of three beige phosphate sub-layers and two black phosphate sub-layers as a feed fraction for the calcination and reverses flotation processes. This research work aims to characterise and treat two types of phosphate: one beige with the sub-layers (main, lower and upper) and the other black with the sub-layers (main and upper) in order to have better recovery of P2O5. The working methodology consists of a series of sample preparation operations and characterization of the two types of beige and black phosphate. This characterization includes a petrographic study, a granulochemical analysis, an X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and an atomic adsorption spectrophotometry (SAA), an auto analyzer (AA), a Bernard calcimeter. These analyzes allow on the one hand to identify the mineral phases in quantitative and qualitative manner, and on the other hand to choose the process for treating phosphates from the Kef-Essenoun-Tebessa deposit. The combined method of treatment by calcination followed by reverse flotation gave satisfactory results. The P2O5 content reaches 33.88 % for beige phosphate and 33.13 % for black phosphate. The stored waste rock represents a problem for the company; this waste rock contains fairly high levels of phosphate. The treatment of the mixture of the main sub-layers with these waste rocks makes it possible to obtain a better recovery of P2O5, a better economic profitability of the Djebel Onk mining complex and an environmental impact in the region. In contrast to the western part of the Lower Silesia, information about the basalt-derived weathering crusts occurring in the Opole region is rather limited. However, in 2018, significant volumes of such regolith (about 20,000 m3) were discovered during development works in the NW part of the Rutki Quarry near Niemodlin. This weathering crust is rich in clay minerals and represents a smectite-kaolinite mixture with some halloysite, the latter being a poorly ordered member of the kaolinite group. The minerals of the smectite group contain in their interlayer spaces bivalent cations (calcium and magnesium), which is the most often case in the nature. The mineral composition of the regolith mass is supplemented by iron-containing phases, i.e. goethite and magnetite, and traces of phosphate mineral - crandallite. A significant amount of clay minerals, particularly those belonging to the smectite group and halloysite, results in high value of the specific surface area (up to 100 m2/g) of the studied crust. Such favorable property of the crust makes it a promising sorptive raw material that can be applied, even in an unprocessed form, for waterproofing. It must be emphasized that the sorption properties of basalt weathering crusts were noticed some centuries ago in the western part of Lower Silesia, where medicine called terra sigillata was produced from them. Moreover, the crust from Rutki was also used in the XIXth century, in a ceramic manufacture located in nearby Tułowice, where the so-called "Silesian black porcelain" was produced. Vivianite, a ferrous phosphate mineral, can be a significant phosphorus (P) burial phase in non-sulfidic, reducing coastal sediments. Expected sea level rise may increase sulfide production in currently non-sulfidic sediments containing vivianite, leading to conditions under which vivianite is thermodynamically unstable. Here, we compared the mineral transformation processes of two different vivianites: unsubstituted vivianite and a vivianite substituted with Mn and Mg (Mn/Mg/Fe=0.30/0.14/0.56), two cations that frequently substitute for Fe in the crystal structure of vivianite. Further, we investigated the potential role of calcium carbonate as a sorption site for phosphate, which is released during vivianite dissolution. The vivianites were mixed with sea sand (quartz) and with or without calcium carbonate. The mixes were filled in mesh bags and installed at 15 to 20 cm sediment depth at two adjacent field plots with contrasting dissolved sulfide concentrations in an intertidal flat in the Wadden Sea. The low sulfide plot had sulfide concentrations ≤50 μM, while concentrations at the high sulfide plot ranged from 0.6 to 6.7 mM. Porewater chemistry was regularly monitored during the field experiment. After 56 days of field incubation, the reacted solid phase was assessed by acid digestion for total elemental composition and Fe, P, and S speciation by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Both vivianites with and without calcium carbonate and at both field plots dissolved partially, resulting in a net loss of Fe, Mn, Mg, and P from the mesh bags (elemental losses ranged from ∼ 10 to 35%), while solid-phase S accumulated, particularly at the high sulfide plot. Green rust minerals were the major transformation product at the low sulfide plot to which some released phosphate could likely readsorb. Mackinawite formation, which dominated at the high sulfide plot, is less efficient at adsorbing P and thus resulted in an enhanced P loss from the mesh bags. On average, there was ∼ 27% P loss at the high sulfide plot, compared to ∼ 20% at the low sulfide plot. Mn-Mg-substituted vivianite dissolved more at both field plots, likely due to changes in mineral reactivity due to isomorphic substitution. The presence of calcium carbonate slightly lowered P loss, suggesting that its presence may positively impact P retention during vivianite transformation. Overall, P availability was enhanced under euxinic conditions, indicating that vivianite-containing sediments may become sources of bioavailable P under changing environmental conditions. Rare-earth elements are critical components of technologies used in renewable energy, communication, transportation, and national defense. Securing supply chains by developing domestic rare-earth resources, including coal and coal byproducts, has become a national priority. With some of the largest coal reserves in the country, states within the Appalachian Basin can play a key role in supplying these elements. Understanding rare-earth element phase associations and the processes that lead to enrichment in these coals will inform resource prospecting and recovery techniques. This study used sequential leaching in addition to scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to identify rare-earth element modes of occurrence in WV coals. The results indicate that heavier elements have a stronger association with organic matter and that phosphate minerals are primary sources of both heavy and light rare-earth elements. However, these phases are shielded by a resistant aluminosilicate matrix that can impede the recovery of rare-earth elements using traditional methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explored the geological history of the Taurus‐Littrow Valley at the Apollo 17 landing site through the induced thermoluminescence (TL) properties of regolith samples collected from the foothills of the Northern and Southern Massifs, from near the landing site, and from the deep drill core taken in proximity to the landing site. The samples were recently made available by NASA through the Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis program in anticipation of the forthcoming Artemis missions. We found that the two samples from the foothills of the massifs exhibit induced TL values approximately four times higher than those of the valley samples. This observation is consistent with their elevated plagioclase content, indicating their predominantly highland material composition. Conversely, the valley samples display induced TL values characteristic of lunar mare material. The samples from the deep drill core demonstrate uniformly induced TL properties, despite originating from depths of up to 3 m. Notably, one of the samples from the lower section of the deep drill core presents anomalous‐induced TL readings. This anomaly coincides with elevated levels of low‐potassium KREEP along with reduced quantities of anorthositic gabbro and orange glass, and could be due to the traces of phosphate minerals. Alternatively, this observation raises the possibility that this sample contains Tycho impact material. The induced TL data is consistent with the regolith, extending to a depth of at least 3 m, having been deposited by a singular event approximately 100 million years ago. This timing aligns with the hypothesized formation of the Tycho crater. The text provides information about Montebrasite, a lithium aluminum phosphate mineral, and the Montebras tin mine in Creuse, France. Montebrasite was named after the quarry where it was discovered, which has a long history of mining phosphate minerals since pre-Roman times. Background: Urolithiasis in dogs is a disorder of the urinary tract caused by the development of crystals. These crystals are composed of minerals such as phosphates, oxalates, urates, cystine, carbonates, and silica. It can be fatal if the diagnosis and treatment are inaccurate. This report aims to report a case of urolithiasis in a Toy Poodle dog. Case Description: A 2-year-old male Toy Poodle dog weighing 4.2 kg with black hair, and having trouble urinating was presented to Prof. Soeparwi Animal Hospital, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. The dog is examined physically and, in the laboratory, diagnosed and continued with operative therapy. The history and physical examination revealed that the dog had been experiencing hematuria, stranguria, and oliguria for 2 months, with the last few days accompanied by decreased appetite. The dog exhibited decreased skin turgor, a capillary refill time (CRT) of less than 2 seconds, signs of pain and distress during urination, and palpation of distended urinary vesicles. Ultrasound scans revealed uroliths in the urinary vesica, which were identified by an acoustic shadow. Blood tests indicated a decrease in hematocrit and erythrocytes along with an increase in leukocytes. Urolithiasis was diagnosed in the case dog based on anamnesis, physical examination, hematological examination, and ultrasonography. Subsequently, a cystotomy was performed, and uroliths located in urinary vesicles were removed. The dog received ceftriaxone injections at 15 mg/kg body weight and vitamin B-complex injections at a concentration of 10 mg/kg body weight for 5 days. Four days post-surgery, the case dog was able to successfully urinate and pass clean urine. Conclusion: The Toy Poodle dog was diagnosed with silica urolithiasis in the urinary vesicles and the urolith is quite large. Cystotomy was performed to remove the urolith. Postoperative care were included the administration of antibiotics and vitamins to facilitate the healing process. The condition of the Poodle toy dog improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forty-five years after the Apollo and Luna missions, China's Chang'e-5 (CE-5) mission collected ∼1.73 kg of new lunar materials from one of the youngest basalt units on the Moon. The CE-5 lunar samples provide opportunities to address some key scientific questions related to the Moon, including the discovery of high-pressure silica polymorphs (seifertite and stishovite) and a new lunar mineral, changesite-(Y). Seifertite was found to be coexist with stishovite in a silica fragment from CE-5 lunar regolith. This is the first confirmed seifertite in returned lunar samples. Seifertite has two space group symmetries (Pnc2 and Pbcn) and formed from an α-cristobalite-like phase during "cold" compression during a shock event. The aftershock heating process changes some seifertite to stishovite. Thus, this silica fragment records different stages of an impact process, and the peak shock pressure is estimated to be ∼11 to 40 GPa, which is much lower than the pressure condition for coexistence of seifertite and stishovite on the phase diagram. Changesite-(Y), with ideal formula (Ca8Y)□Fe2+(PO4)7 (where □ denotes a vacancy) is the first new lunar mineral to be discovered in CE-5 regolith samples. This newly identified phosphate mineral is in the form of columnar crystals and was found in CE-5 basalt fragments. It contains high concentrations of Y and rare earth elements (REE), reaching up to ∼14 wt. % (Y,REE)2O3. The occurrence of changesite-(Y) marks the late-stage fractional crystallization processes of CE-5 basalts combined with silicate liquid immiscibility. Enhanced continental phosphorus input into the ocean has been suggested as a potential trigger for the transient oxygenation events during the mid‐Proterozoic; however, the response of phosphorus cycling to these marine oxygenations remains unclear. Here, we report the changes in phosphorus cycling associated with a ∼1.7 Ga transient oxygenation. Abundant authigenic aluminum phosphate–sulfate mineral svanbergite (SrAl3(PO4) (SO4) (OH)6; 8.02 ± 4.92 wt%) is identified within the ∼1.7 Ga Yunmengshan ironstones from the Xiong'er Basin, North China and other contemporaneous basins. This observation provides new evidence to support the suggestion that early diagenetic aluminum phosphate‐sulfate minerals could have represented a critical sink of marine phosphorus during the Proterozoic. We suggest that atmospheric oxygenation and concomitant changes in porewater redox chemistry may have enhanced the formation of early diagenetic phosphates, leading to a negative feedback on the oceanic phosphorus reservoir and atmospheric oxygen levels. The elevated phosphorus and sulfate inputs from the enhanced continental weathering and oxygenation may have promoted the formation of aluminum phosphate‐sulfate minerals. This, in turn, reduced the bio‐availability of phosphorus in the marine environment, ultimately limiting marine productivity and leading to a negative feedback on the oxygenation event. Background: Prior to soil formation, phosphate liberated by rock weathering is often sequestered into highly insoluble lanthanide phosphate minerals. Dissolution of these minerals releases phosphate and lanthanides to the biosphere. Currently, the microorganisms involved in phosphate mineral dissolution and the role of lanthanides in microbial metabolism are poorly understood. Results: Although there have been many studies of soil microbiology, very little research has investigated microbiomes of weathered rock. Here, we sampled weathered granite and associated soil to identify the zones of lanthanide phosphate mineral solubilisation and genomically define the organisms implicated in lanthanide utilisation. We reconstructed 136 genomes from 11 bacterial phyla and found that gene clusters implicated in lanthanide-based metabolism of methanol (primarily xoxF3 and xoxF5) are surprisingly common in microbial communities in moderately weathered granite. Notably, xoxF3 systems were found in Verrucomicrobia for the first time, and in Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes and Alphaproteobacteria. The xoxF-containing gene clusters are shared by diverse Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes, and include conserved hypothetical proteins and transporters not associated with the few well studied xoxF systems. Given that siderophore-like molecules that strongly bind lanthanides may be required to solubilise lanthanide phosphates, it is notable that candidate metallophore biosynthesis systems were most prevalent in bacteria in moderately weathered rock, especially in Acidobacteria with lanthanide-based systems. Conclusions: Phosphate mineral dissolution, putative metallophore production and lanthanide utilisation by enzymes involved in methanol oxidation linked to carbonic acid production co-occur in the zone of moderate granite weathering. Biomineralization by phosphate minerals and phosphate solubilizing fungi (PSF) has attracted great interest as a novel remediation method for heavy metal(loid) co-contaminated soil. It was very essential to investigate the microenvironment response with the application of amendments. In this study, three grain sizes of hydroxyapatites (HAP) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) were used to investigate the change in heavy metal(loid) fractions, soil physicochemical properties, and bacterial community during the remediation of Mangchang and Dabaoshan acidic mine soils. The results showed that the residual fractions in the two soils increased significantly after 35 days of remediation, especially that of As and Zn in Dabaoshan soils were presented at over 87%. In addition, soil pH, organic matter (OM), and available phosphorous (AP) were almost improved. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis indicated that the introduction of culture medium and P. chrysosporium alone changed bacterial abundance, but the addition of HAP changed the bacterial diversity and community composition by altering environmental conditions. The amendments in the research showed good performance on immobilizing heavy metal(loid)s and reducing their bioavailability. Phosphogypsum (PG) is an industrial by-product of the transformation of phosphate rocks. For decades, PG has been a source of environmental concern due to the massive amount produced thus far, i.e., 7 billion tons, with a current production rate of 200–280 million tons per year. Phosphate minerals contain various impurities that precipitate and concentrate within PG. These impurities hinder PG usability in various sectors. This paper aims to purify PG using an innovative process based on staged valorization of PG. Initially, PG dissociation by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was optimized. After screening of different parameters and monitoring the ionic conductivity of solutions, it was disclosed that a pH-dependent solubilization process in the presence of EDTA resulted in high solubility of PG, up to 11.82 g/100 mL at pH > 11. Subsequently, a recovery of the purified PG by selective precipitation of calcium sulfate dihydrate (CSD) from obtained filtrate through pH adjustment to 3.5 were investigated. An abatement of 99.34% Cr, 97.15% Cd, 95.73% P2O5, 92.75% Cu, 92.38% Al2O3, 91.16% Ni, 74.58% Zn, 72.75% F, 61.43% MgO, 58.8% Fe2O3, 56.97% K2O, and 55.41% Ba was achieved. The process relied on the variation of EDTA chelation properties towards monovalent, divalent, and trivalent cations at different pHs. Phosphorous fixation in the soil is the most limiting factor for P-management, and previous studies have indicated that coupling nanoparticulated P sources (e.g. hydroxyapatite) in adequate matrices (nanocomposites) can increase nutrient uptake. However, how the nanocomposite affects the P fixation is still an open question. Herein we describe X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) experiments to investigate the role of phosphate fertilizer (P) composite in reducing P complexation in soil. Experiments in a greenhouse (maize cultivation) and soil incubation comparatively revealed that a composite formed by the dispersion of hydroxyapatite (phosphate source) into urea could increase the production of dry matter (compared to monoammonium phosphate, MAP), keeping the residual P available in the soil for future cultivations (i.e. not strongly bonded to minerals). This behavior was evidenced by P-XANES, which indicated that the composite induced the bonding of remnant P to more labile organic fractions instead of mineral phases, as seen in MAP cultivation. Most of the chemical and physical interactions of interest to the astrobiology community are influenced by the mineralogy of the systems under consideration. Often, this mineralogy occurs in sediment or sediment-like aqueous microenvironments in which the early minerals differ dramatically from the mature version that results from a long diagenesis, which are tied to complex interactions of pH, redox state, concentration, and temperature. This interconnectedness is difficult to reproduce in a laboratory setting yet is essential to understanding how the physical and chemical demands of living systems alter and are altered by their geological context. We present a facile means for producing precipitated mineral analogues within a microchannel and demonstrate its analytical efficacy through instrumental and modeling techniques. We show that amorphous, early-stage analogues of iron sulfide, iron carbonate, and iron phosphate can be formed at the boundary between flowing solutions, modeled on the microscale, and analyzed by standard instrumental techniques such as scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The new mineral désorite, Pb2(Fe3+6Zn)O2(PO4)4(OH)8, is a secondary oxidation-zone mineral discovered on the dumps of the Schöne Aussicht mine, Dernbach, Westerwaldkreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The crystals are irregular blades up to about 0.25 mm long, occurring in subparallel and radial aggregates. Désorite is brownish red. It has an orange streak, adamantine luster, brittle tenacity, splintery and curved fracture and two cleavages: {02 1 ¯ } perfect and {001} good. It has a hardness (Mohs) of about 3 and is nonfluorescent in both long- and short-wave ultraviolet illumination. The calculated density is 4.633 g/cm3. Optically, crystals are biaxial (+) with α = 2.00(1), β = 2.02(calc) and γ = 2.10(calc) (white light). The 2V is 54(2)° and the optical orientation is Y ~⊥{02 1 ¯ }, X ∧ a ≈ 13°. The mineral is pleochroic: X yellow brown, Y red brown, Z red brown; X < Y ≈ Z. The empirical formula from electron microprobe analysis is Pb1.93(Zn0.50Fe3+6.29☐0.21)Σ7.00(P3.90As0.10)Σ4.00O26H8.28. Désorite is triclinic, space group P 1 ¯ ; the unit-cell parameters are a = 5.4389(7), b = 9.3242(13), c = 10.0927(12) Å, α = 109.024(8), β = 90.521(6), γ = 97.588(7)°, V = 478.90(11) Å3 and Z = 1. Désorite has a framework structure (R1 = 0.0487 for 937 I > 2σI reflections) assembled from Fe3+O6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra, with Pb occupying cavities in the framework. The Fe3+O6 octahedra in the framework occur in edge-sharing chains, edge-sharing trimers and individual octahedra, all sharing corners with each other and with PO4 tetrahedra. In anthropic savanna ecosystems from the Iberian Peninsula (i.e. dehesa), complex interactions between climate change, pathogen outbreaks and human land use are presumed to be behind the observed increase in holm oak decline. These environmental disturbances alter the plant–soil microbial continuum, which can destabilize the ecological balance that sustains tree health. Yet, little is known about the underlying mechanisms, particularly the directions and nature of the causal–effect relationships between plants and soil microbial communities.In this study, we aimed to determine the role of plant–soil feedbacks in climate‐induced holm oak decline in the Iberian dehesa. Using a gradient of holm oak health, we reconstructed key soil biogeochemical cycles mediated by soil microbial communities. We used quantitative microbial element cycling (QMEC), a functional gene‐array‐based high‐throughput technique to assess microbial functional potential in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur cycling.The onset of holm oak decline was positively related to the increase in relative abundance of soil microbial functional genes associated with denitrification and phosphorus mineralization (i.e. nirS3, ppx and pqqC; parameter value: 0.21, 0.23 and 0.4; p < 0.05). Structural equation model (χ2 = 32.26, p‐value = 0.73), moreover, showed a negative association between these functional genes and soil nutrient availability (i.e. mainly mineral nitrogen and phosphate). Particularly, the holm oak crown health was mainly determined by the abundance of phosphate (parameter value = 0.27; p‐value < 0.05) and organic phosphorus (parameter value = −0.37; p‐value < 0.5).Hence, we propose a potential tree–soil feedback loop, in which the decline of holm oak promotes changes in the soil environment that triggers changes in key microbial‐mediated metabolic pathways related to the net loss of soil nitrogen and phosphorus mineral forms. Phosphorites of the Georgina Basin (northern Australia) are an established economic source of phosphate and have recently been recognized to be a potential source of rare earth elements (REE). Previous bulk‐rock geochemistry work focused on the eastern margin of the basin revealed that phosphorites from the southern region have significantly higher (up to 0.5%) REE contents than equivalent prospects further to the north. In this study, we examine the origin of REE enrichment in the Georgina Basin phosphorites using an integrated geochemical, petrographic, mineralogical, and isotopic (Sm‐Nd and Sr) approach. The trace element geochemistry of primary phosphate minerals is consistent with a seawater origin for the REEs in phosphorites, with minimal input from the underlying basement rocks. Variations in total REE concentrations are controlled largely by the seawater composition, depositional environment, and the texture of the phosphorite (grainstone vs. mudstone phosphorite). Grainstone phosphorite yields on average higher concentrations of REEs compared to the mudstone phosphorite, likely due to the higher surface‐to‐mass ratio of the grainstone phosphorite resulting in the uptake of higher concentrations of REEs during coastal reworking. The formation of the low‐REE northern and central deposits took place during early transgression in oxidized, shallow supratidal to subtidal platformal environments. During the subsequent main transgressive event, fault‐controlled topography in the southern domain allowed phosphogenesis along basement highs to be facilitated along a redox boundary, where more saline and REE‐rich deep anoxic bottom waters, along with Fe‐cycling and bacterial mediation played a major role in the enrichment of REEs in the southern phosphorites. Macroautophagy/autophagy is a highly conserved catabolic process vital for cellular stress responses and maintaining equilibrium within the cell. Malfunctioning autophagy has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including certain neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, metabolic diseases, and cancer. Cells face diverse metabolic challenges, such as limitations in nitrogen, carbon, and minerals such as phosphate and iron, necessitating the integration of complex metabolic information. Cells utilize a signal transduction network of sensors, transducers, and effectors to coordinate the execution of the autophagic response, concomitant with the severity of the nutrient‐starvation condition. This review presents the current mechanistic understanding of how cells regulate the initiation of autophagy through various nutrient‐dependent signaling pathways. Emphasizing findings from studies in yeast, we explore the emerging principles that underlie the nutrient‐dependent regulation of autophagy, significantly shaping stress‐induced autophagy responses under various metabolic stress conditions. A new sub-type of folia named “reverse pseudo-gour” has been observed and described in the Nerja Cave, southern Spain. It consists of fairly vertical, thin barriers (about 5 mm high and 2 mm thick) that develop on the underside of a sub-horizontal surface (shelfstone) and grow in the opposite direction to normal gours (rimstone dams), generating sinuous shapes. Their mineral composition is essentially calcium carbonate, although globular aggregates composed of clay and phosphate minerals have also been identified. The genesis and evolution of these reverse pseudo-gours occur just at the air-water interface and are controlled by (1) the sub-horizontality of the surface on which they develop, (2) scarce to very scarce calcite supersaturation, and (3) progressive and slow lowering of the water level. Thus, reverse pseudo-gours represent the shape limit to which a folia reaches when its development occurs just below a nearly horizontal ceiling and the feeding water saturation is extremely low. Although this new sub-type of folia has only been observed in the Nerja Cave, it is highly probable that it exists in several other caves around the world because the factors controlling its development are not very strict.
