A power generator comprising a thermoelectric device (TED) and a phase change material (PCM) allows energy harvesting from ambient temperature variations, which exist ubiquitously; thus, such a device has received considerable attention as an energy harvester that can operate at any location. We developed a model for estimating the characteristics of a power generator in ambient air, whose temperature is forcibly changed between two temperature values, such as when an air conditioner is turned on and off. We calculated the influence of latent heat and thermal conductivity of the PCM on the characteristics of power generators with various thermal resistances between the TED/PCM interface and ambient air. Latent heat and thermal conductivity of the PCM affect the amount of heat energy (Q) transfer between the ambient air and PCM and the energy conversion efficiency (ηE), respectively, where the amount of electric energy is given by Q × ηE. The increase in Q caused by an increase in the latent heat of the PCM was almost independent of the thermal resistance between the TED/PCM interface and air. However, the increase in ηE caused by an increase in the thermal conductivity of the PCM decreased as the thermal resistance between the TED/PCM interface and air increased. These results indicate that the techniques to improve the power generation characteristics by increasing the thermal conductivity of PCM, which have been frequently investigated in recent years, are effective only when the thermal resistance between the TED/PCM interface and ambient air is small. Ge-Sb-Te (GST) alloys are leading phase-change materials for data storage due to the fast phase transition between amorphous and crystalline states. Ongoing research aims at improving the stability of the amorphous phase to improve retention. This can be accomplished by the introduction of carbon as a dopant to Ge2Sb2Te5, which is known to alter the short- and mid-range structure of the amorphous phase and form covalently bonded C clusters, both of which hinder crystallization. The relative importance of these processes as a function of C concentration is not known. We used molecular dynamics simulation based on density functional theory to study how carbon doping affects the atomic structure of GST-C. Carbon doping results in an increase in tetrahedral coordination, especially of Ge atoms, and this is known to stabilize the amorphous phase. We observe an unexpected, non-monotonous trend in the number of tetrahedral bonded Ge with the amount of carbon doping. Our simulations show an increase in the number of tetrahedral bonded Ge up to 5 at.% C, after which the number saturates and begins to decrease above 14 at.% C. The carbon atoms aggregate into clusters, mostly in the form of chains and graphene flakes, leaving less carbon to disrupt the GST matrix at higher carbon concentrations. Owing to their ability for fast switching and the large property contrast between the crystalline and amorphous states that permits multi-level data storage, in-memory computing and neuromorphic computing, the investigation of phase change materials (PCMs) remains a highly active field of research. Yet, the continuous increase in electrical resistance (called drift) observed in the amorphous phase has so far hindered the commercial implementation of multi-level data storage. It was recently shown that the resistance drift is caused by aging-induced structural relaxation of the glassy phase, which is accompanied by a simultaneous decrease in enthalpy and fictive temperature. This implies that resistance is related to enthalpy relaxation. While the resistance is known to drift even at room temperature and below, evidence for enthalpy relaxation at room temperature in amorphous PCMs is still missing. Here, we monitor changes in enthalpy induced by long-term room-temperature aging in a series of PCMs. Our results demonstrate the simultaneity of resistance drift and enthalpy relaxation at room temperature, and thus provide further insights into the mechanism of resistance drift and its possible remediation. Alloying and site ordering play complementary roles in dictating a material's properties. However, deconvolving the impacts of these separate phenomena can be challenging. In this work, we simulate structures of Zn (Sn , Ge) N 2 with varied Sn content and site ordering to determine the impacts of order and composition on structural and electronic properties. We assess the formation enthalpy, lattice parameters, elastic constants, spontaneous polarization, and piezoelectric coefficients. In mostly disordered structures (order parameters ranging from 0.2 to 0.4), the formation enthalpy exhibits local extrema as a function of the order parameter, deviating from the more linear trends seen in both fully disordered and fully ordered systems. This anomalous deviation from the otherwise linear trend in formation enthalpy with order manifests in each of the other properties calculated. This range of order parameters of interest may be caused by a transition in the ordering of the quaternary material similar to phase changes seen in ternary compounds but stretched over a region inclduing 20% of the order parameter range. Most parameters calculated are more sensitive to order than to composition in the limited composition range tested; however, the lattice parameter c , piezoelectric coefficient e 33 , and elastic moduli C 12 , C 13 , and C 23 are more sensitive to composition. Of the properties compared, the piezoelectric coefficients are influenced most significantly by changes in both the composition and order parameter. Lattice parameters undergo the smallest changes with order and composition, but these small differences appear to impart large trends in the other properties. Better understanding the effects of disorder and group IV alloying in Zn (Sn , Ge) N 2 allows for more accurate modeling of characteristics of this material system for solid state lighting and other applications. With the in-depth study of open optical systems, the topological phases of non-Hermitian metasurfaces have attracted increasing attention due to their topological protection properties. Here, in this paper, a tunable non-Hermitian metasurface with bidirectional anisotropism is proposed. By incorporating the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2) into the metasurface, two topological exceptional points (EPs) appear in the system by adjusting the conductivity of VO2 and chiral responses appear at both EPs. This research shows that the conductivity significantly affects the reflection of the metasurface, and the zero-reflection points correspond to the EPs of the non-Hermitian system. Further results prove that circling around EPs leads to a 2π phase change, which is topologically protected and independent of the encirclement path. Therefore, this study employs an active control approach to realize two topological EPs. Through comprehensive investigations into the topological properties and chiral performance at EPs, we elucidate the mechanism for the chirality generation in non-Hermitian metasurfaces, which offers feasible solutions for the development of chiral topological devices and light transmission and modulation in future applications. Carbon-doped Ge2Sb2Te5 (CGST) is a potential candidate in phase change random access memory (PCRAM) with superb thermal stability and ultrahigh cycle endurance. Direct observation of the microstructure evolution of CGST is desirable to uncover the phase transformation mechanism on the relationship of nucleation/crystalline behaviors of the crystalline phase at elevated temperatures and the pristine amorphous phase at room temperature. Here, we investigate the structural evolution of CGST using combined in situ techniques. Our in situ x-ray diffraction and ellipsometry results demonstrate that CGST exhibits a much higher phase transition temperature than undoped one. Temperature-dependent in situ transmission electron microscopy observations further reveal that carbon doping plays a critical role in tailoring the properties of GST by tuning the stochasticity of nucleation/crystallization, stabilizing amorphous and crystalline GST via isolating and refining the grain size at room temperature and elevated temperature. Our work provides detailed information for understanding the microscopic origin of crystallization kinetics of carbon-doped phase change materials toward high-performance PCRAM. Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST), a phase change material, generally exhibits two-step crystallization (amorphous → fcc → hcp) to store and process data. The present study reports the crystallization behavior and bonding mechanism of Ga-doped GST thin films with thermal annealing. Ga doping results in the formation of Ga–Te bonds and shows no bonding with other host elements (Ge and Sb), which changes the bonding mechanism and leads to one-step crystallization (amorphous → fcc). The optical transmission contrast confirmed the thermal stabilization of the fcc phase with thermal annealing. These findings suggest that Ga doping into GST thin films has thermally stabilized the metastable fcc phase and suppressed the hcp phase, hence posing it as a potential candidate for phase change memory applications with fast processing speed and low power consumption. The phase transition temperature and crystallization kinetics of phase-change materials (PCMs) are crucial characteristics for their performance, data retention, and reliability in memory devices. Herein, the crystallization behavior and kinetics of a compositionally optimized, N-doped Ge-rich Ge–Sb–Te alloy (GGST) in the slow crystallization regime are systematically investigated using synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) in situ during heat treatment. Uniform thin films (50, 25, 10, and 5 nm) of initially amorphous N-doped GGST are investigated. The specimens were heated up to 450 °C at a rate of 2 °C/min to estimate crystallization onsets by quantifiying the crystallized quantity during material transformation from the XRD patterns. Subsequent isothermal anneals have been performed to assess crystallization behavior and activation energies. Nucleation-controlled crystallization that progresses in two steps is observed, together with the emergence of Ge preceding cubic Ge2Sb2Te5, with a mild dependence of crystallization temperature on film thickness that is inverse to what has been observed in other systems. Ge and GST crystallization may be described occurring in three-time stages: (i) an incubation period; (ii) a fast growth period; and (iii) a very slow-growth period. Very high activation energies (between 3.5 and 4.3 eV) for each phase are found for the incubation time t0. The activation energy for Ge in the fast growth regime is close to the one reported for the crystallization of pure Ge films. In the case of Ge, the incubation time is strongly thickness-dependent, which may have important consequences for the scaling of memories fabricated with this class of materials. Phase-change memory (PCM) is one of the leading candidates for the next generation nonvolatile memory. As a growth-dominated crystalline material, Sb2Te3 is of rapid crystallization speed while its poor thermal stability limits its application. Doping Ti can significantly enhance its amorphous stability but inevitably slows down its crystallization speed. How to balance the contradiction between thermal stability and operation speed remains challenging. In this work, we proposed a gradient Ti-doped Sb2Te3 phase-change material and device. This gradient doping strategy compensates for the negative effect of Ti doping on the crystallization rate of Sb2Te3 via the template effect of the lower doping concentration layer. Very small lattice mismatch between the Sb2Te3 layers with different Ti doping concentrations is verified by x-ray diffraction characterization. The crystallization temperature of a gradient Ti-doped Sb2Te3 thin film is raised up to 172.6 °C and the same 50 ns operation speed as a pure Sb2Te3 device is achieved in the corresponding PCM device. Furthermore, the gradient distribution of Ti elements and the corresponding progressive crystallization phenomenon are verified by transmission electron microscopy revealing the microscopic origin of rapid crystallization speed. We report the thermal conductivity of amorphous, cubic, and hexagonal Ge2Sb2Te5 using time-domain thermoreflectance from 80 to 500 K. The measured thermal conductivities are 0.20 W m−1 K−1 for amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5, 0.63 W m−1 K−1 for the cubic phase, and 1.45 W m−1 K−1 for the hexagonal phase at room temperature. For amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5, the thermal conductivity increases monotonically with temperature when T < 300 K, showing a typical glass-like temperature dependence, and increases dramatically after heating up to 435 K due to partial crystallization to the cubic phase. For hexagonal Ge2Sb2Te5, electronic contribution to thermal conductivity is significant. The lattice thermal conductivity of the hexagonal phase shows a relatively low value of 0.47 W m−1 K−1 at room temperature and has a temperature dependence of T−1 when T > 100 K, suggesting that phonon–phonon scattering dominates its lattice thermal conductivity. Although cubic Ge2Sb2Te5 has a similar grain size to hexagonal Ge2Sb2Te5, its thermal conductivity shows a glass-like trend like that of the amorphous phase, indicating a high concentration of vacancies that strongly scatter heat-carrying phonons. As an important phase-change material, GeTe has many high-pressure phases as well, but its phase transitions under pressure are still lack of clarity. It is challenging to identify high-pressure GeTe crystal structures owing to the phase coexistence in a wide pressure range and the reversibility of phase transitions. Hence, first-principles calculations are required to provide further information in addition to limited experimental characterizations. In this work, a new orthorhombic Cmca GeTe high-pressure phase has been predicted via the CALYPSO method as the most energetically favorable phase in the pressure range between ∼30 and ∼38.5 GPa, which would update the GeTe high-pressure phase transition sequence. The crystal structure of the Cmca phase is composed of alternate stacking puckered layers of Ge six-membered rings and Te four-membered rings along the b direction. The high density of states near the Fermi level and delocalization of electrons from the two-dimensional electron localization function indicate a strong metallic property of the Cmca phase. Electron–phonon coupling calculations indicate that the Cmca phase is superconductive below ∼4.2 K at 35 GPa. The simulated x-ray diffraction pattern of the Cmca phase implies that this phase might coexist with the Pnma-boat phase under high pressure. The emerging phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted much attention due to their unique properties and applications. However, the optical properties of PCM at high pressures have not been well explored. In this work, the microstructure and optical properties of GeTe and Sn-substituted GeTe at high pressures up to 30 GPa have been systematically investigated. We find that the substitution of small amounts of Sn for Ge combined with the introduction of high pressure can induce an optical contrast of 117% in crystalline GeTe, which is even higher than the highest optical contrast reported so far (90%) caused by amorphous GeTe to crystalline GeTe. The pressure-induced contrast does not originate from any phase transition as previously, but from the combined effect of Peierls distortion elimination and Ge vacancy formation, which leads to an increase in carrier concentration. The relationship between pressure/atomic composition, Peierls distortion/vacancy formation, and optical contrast can be well explained by a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations. In this study, novel tetradecylamine/MXene/cellulose nanocrystal composite phase change materials (TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs) were prepared using a vacuum impregnation method. For the first time, lightweight MXene/CNC composite aerogel was employed as a support material in energy storage, with TDA serving as the phase change material. The latent heat of TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs reached 221.5 J/g. Furthermore, the density of the MXene/CNC-2 composite aerogel was 0.0614 g/cm3, and its loading rate for TDA was as high as 90.6 wt%. Additionally, the thermal conductivity of TDA/MXene/CNC CPCM-5 was 0.491 W/(m·K), 1.87 times higher than that of pure TDA. The TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs exhibited exceptional thermal stability up to 120 °C and maintained excellent shape stability at 60 °C. The composites exhibit a superior solar-thermal conversion ability with the conversion efficiency as high as 94.1%, The incorporation of MXene significantly enhances the photothermal conversion capability, providing an important avenue for the high-efficiency utilisation of solar energy. This study shows the beneficial properties of using (Li 2 Mn 4)O(CO 3) 4 ·H 2 O (P–LiMn 2 O 4) as an anti-ablation additive in silicone rubber, effectively inhibiting ablation at all temperature ranges studied, indicating its potential as a valuable material. The experimental results show that P–LiMn 2 O 4 enhances the anti-ablation process of silicone rubber through several mechanisms, including dehydration, decarbonization, gas production, and solid-solid phase change. These mechanisms induce heat absorption, gas film formation and ceramic phase formation. Furthermore, P–LiMn 2 O 4 effectively improves the resistance of silicone rubber to ablation without compromising its mechanical properties. This study presents a method to enhance ablation resistance through multiple pathways, which can extend the application of phase change materials under extreme thermal conditions. [Display omitted] The development and preparation of multifunctional photothermal conversion materials has far-reaching significance for the utilization of solar energy resources in response to the energy crisis. Herein, we propose a Janus membrane for interfacial solar evaporation and phase change energy storage. The membranes were fabricated via combining the PVA film with multi-shelled hollow spheres (MHS). The membranes have asymmetric wettability, that is, one side is hydrophilic and the other side is hydrophobic. The as-resulted membranes obtain outstanding light absorption without further processing. According to these two advantages, the membranes were applied to solar evaporation. The evaporation rate of the membrane is 1.41 kg*m−2h−1 and the evaporation efficiency is 92.4 % under 1sun irradiation. Moreover, the membrane prepared by impregnating 1-Hexadecanamine (HDA) into MHS possesses excellent tensile strength (2.21 MPa) and photothermal conversion ability. The light-to-thermal conversion efficiency can reach 81.9 % under 1sun irradiation. Therefore, the membranes have broad application prospects in the field of photothermal conversion. The Sb2Te3 phase change material shows a growth-dominated crystallization mechanism with fast phase transition but poor thermal stability of the amorphous state. This work investigated the effects of carbon doping on the thermal stability, microstructure, and electrical properties of the Sb2Te3 material. The 10-year data retention temperature of the material increased to ∼147.3 °C and the size of the grains was limited to ∼10 nm by carbon doping. The formation of the C cluster upon crystallization was found at the grain boundaries, which was accelerated as the temperature increased due to the break of the Sb–C bonds. The memory device based on the carbon-doped Sb2Te3 material exhibited a switching speed of 15 ns and an endurance of ∼105 cycles with a resistance ratio of more than two orders of magnitude. This work suggests that the carbon-doped Sb2Te3 material is a promising candidate for memory applications that require high thermal stability, fast speed, and high endurance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Passive thermal energy storage systems using phase change materials (PCMs) are promising for resolving temporal‐spatial overheating issues from small‐ to large‐scale platforms, yet their poor shape stability due to solid–liquid transition incurs PCM leakage and weak resistance against mechanical disturbance, limiting practical applications. While foam‐stable templates for PCMs have shown complement, they reveal massive leakage and collapse of liquefied PCMs under external loads or impacts. Herein, a multiscale porous architecture consisting of graphene aerogels (GAs) and meta structures enabling robust thermal‐mechanical functionalities of PCMs (3D‐MPGA) toward sustainable phase change thermal energy storage composites is reported. 3D‐printed mechanical metamaterials employing octet‐truss cells provide supportive strength and directionally‐assisted leakage reduction, while GAs serve as porous templates with surface‐interfacial contacts, thereby fixing paraffin wax as PCM inside their nano/micropores. The 3D‐MPGA shows intrinsic thermal characteristics of bulk PCMs, and improved thermal‐mechanical‐chemical stability, confirmed by long‐term heating‐cooling cycle tests over 10 h. Moreover, it exhibits highly reinforced strength (200–5000%) within a low density across ambient and melting temperatures, and maintains original shapes in the liquefied PCMs without severe leakage, against external loads. Disentangling nucleation and growth in materials that crystallize on the nanosecond time scale is experimentally quite challenging since the relevant processes also take place on very small, i.e., sub‐micrometer length scales. Phase change materials are bad glass formers, which often crystallize rapidly. Here systematic changes in crystallization kinetics are shown in pseudo‐binary compounds of GeTe and Sb2Te3 and related solids subjected to short laser pulses. Upon systematic changes in stoichiometry, the speed of crystallization changes by three orders of magnitude concomitantly with pronounced changes in stochasticity. Resolving individual grains with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) permits to disentangle of the process of nucleation and growth. From these experiments, supported by multiphysics simulations of crystallization, it can be concluded that high crystallization speeds with small stochasticity characterize phase change materials with fast nucleation, while compounds that nucleate slowly crystallize much more stochastically. Crystallization determines the programming speed of phase‐change memory devices; while, the nucleation phenomenon of many phase‐change materials (PCMs) is not entirely understood, especially concerning the atomic structures and dynamic behaviors of the subcritical nuclei. This is undoubtedly an insurmountable challenge for scandium antimony telluride (ScxSb2Te3) PCM as its subnanosecond‐crystallization nature impedes the real‐time observation of the transient nucleation process. To solve the puzzle, atomic probe tomography and transmission electron microscopy are employed to circumvent the technical difficulties; for the first time, the atomistic information of the heterogeneous nuclei in ScxSb2Te3 is unveiled, such as enriched Sc ≈ 25 at% in core composition, ≈1.0 nm in geometric size, and ≈1023–1024 m−3 in spatial density. The unique nanoscale chemical inhomogeneity ensures the unusual stabilities and dynamics of the early‐stage nuclei, reinforcing them to survive the melt‐quenching action and greatly suppressing the nucleating randomness, thereby facilitating simultaneous and prompt crystal growth throughout the amorphous phase to achieve ultrafast crystallization. The present study offers a new insight into the nonclassical pathways, which will improve understanding and promote better regulation of the nucleation phenomenon in functional materials. Endowing robots with reversible phase transition ability, especially between elastomer and fluid states, can significantly broaden their functionality and applicability. Limited attempts have been made to realize the reversible elastomer–fluid transition. Existing phase transition materials in robotics have over‐hard (≈4 GPa) or over‐soft (≈4 kPa) stiffness in the solid states, which should be further investigated to perform more compliant motions. To address these challenges, a reversible elastomer–fluid transition mechanism enabled by magnetically induced hot melt materials (MIMMs) is presented. The transition principle is explained and material characterizations are conducted. MIMMs‐based metamorphosic robots endow self‐metamorphosing abilities, such as self‐healing, spatial reshaping, self‐division/assembly, and additive manufacturability. When interacting with external environments, MIMMs‐based robots can perform further multifunctional abilities, such as collaborations for structure repairs, swimming by symbiosis with external objects, flowing through a narrow terrain by transiting to fluid, and working with elastomeric structures for stiffness‐variable fluid soft actuators. The proposed elastomer–fluid transitions open a new path for robots to generate more flexible and metamorphosic motions, thereby addressing the cross‐phase transformation challenges that soft robots face. Emulsion‐based, phase change material‐encapsulated monoliths are promising for latent heat storage. However, such monoliths usually exhibit a solid–liquid phase‐transition and the one‐only phase‐transition might hinder the monoliths for more potential applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of emulsion‐based monoliths with a solid‐gel phase‐transition and a solid–solid phase‐transition for latent heat storage. The solid‐gel phase‐transition was from melting and crystallization of octadecane‐in‐crosslinked poly(octadecyl acrylate) that was formed via radical polymerization of the dispersed phase within oil‐in‐water emulsions, and the solid–solid phase‐transition was from melting and crystallization of the crosslinked polyethylene oxide blocks that were synthesized via the interface‐initiated radical polymerization of the continuous phase. The resulting emulsion‐based monoliths showed negligible mass loss during the heating at 60 °C for 8 h, and exhibited two different crystallization (heat release) temperatures and melting (heat storage) temperatures, corresponding to the solid‐gel transition and the solid–solid transition. Moreover, the monoliths possessed quite high heat density (up to 136.4 J/g), and the heat density did not deteriorate over 20 heating–cooling cycles, showing high reusability. Energy demand is continuously increasing around the globe, and the building sector contributes 40% of the total energy consumption, as per the studies. Fossil fuels are the primary cause of harmful gas emissions, thus causing environmental pollution. There is a dire need to introduce innovative techniques to fulfill energy demands while reducing environmental pollution. Phase change materials (PCMs) are the latent thermal storage materials that store thermal energy during phase change from solid to liquid state and vice versa. Thus, using PCMs in structural engineering offers one of the best options for rapidly developing energy-saving materials. To do so, ascaled model, concrete walls room, encapsulating locally available PCMs, was constructed in this study. Three locally available PCMs (glycerin, vegetable ghee, and ferric chloride hexahydrate) have been tested in a controlled environment. The model response is then evaluated for the energy-storing capacity of each PCM while considering the human comfort zone. From the test results, it is concluded that PCMs have a significant effect on improving the thermal energy efficiency of the model without any notable adverse effects. Over the completion of the test, after 12 hr, all the incorporated PCM showed positive results, and a maximum temperature loss of 2.25 K was observed. Among different PCMs, the optimal performance was observed for vegetable ghee, which showed a drop in temperature for all the points at the inner side of the wall, i.e., T3, T4, and T5. This work presents the design and multiphysics simulation of a cylindrical waveguide-based optical switch using germanium-antimony-tellurium (GST) as an active phase change material. The innovative cylindrical architecture is theoretically analyzed and evaluated at 1550 nm wavelength for telecommunication applications. The dispersion relation is derived analytically for the first time to model the optical switch, while finite element method (FEM) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) techniques are utilized to simulate the optical modes, light propagation, and phase change dynamics. The fundamental TE01 and HE11 modes are studied in detail, enabling switching between low-loss amorphous and high-loss crystalline GST phases. Increasing the GST thickness is found to increase absorption loss in the crystalline state but also slows down phase transition kinetics, reducing switching speeds. A 10 nm GST layer results in competitive performance metrics of 0.79 dB insertion loss, 13.47 dB extinction ratio, 30 nJ average power consumption, and 3.5 Mb/s bit rate. The combined optical, thermal, and electrical simulation provides comprehensive insights towards developing integrated non-volatile photonic switches and modulators utilizing phase change materials. Functional soft materials have great potential commercial applications in thermal energy storage, which are required to have a long life, good flexibility, and resistance to liquid leakage. Herein, a composite hydrogel with thermal storage properties is prepared through coupling molecular self‐assembly and in situ polymerization. Hydrophobic stearic acid (SA), as a thermal storage phase change material (PCM), is dispersed in polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel network in the form of oil–water emulsion (O/W). The PAM polymer network with good flexibility physically limits high‐frequency collision between SA PCM droplets. This unique design avoids demulsification in phase change emulsion so that the as‐prepared hydrogel composite can resist liquid leakage. The PAM hydrogel network plays the role of heterogeneous nucleation, resulting in the super‐cooling of SA emulsion at only 0.3 °C. On the other hand, SA PCM droplets in as‐prepared soft material do not directly contact with liquid water, so melting/crystallization process is independent of water. As a result, the soft material exhibits a thermal storage density of up to 99.3 J g−1. The present study is an important step toward designing soft energy storage materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amidst the industrial transformation and upgrade, the new energy vehicle industry is at a crucial juncture. Power batteries, a vital component of new energy vehicles, are currently at the forefront of industry competition with a focus on technological innovation and performance enhancement. The operational temperature of a battery significantly impacts its efficiency, making the design of a reliable Thermal Management System (TMS) essential to ensure battery safety and stability. Cylindrical power batteries are widely utilized in the industry. This article outlines the four main structures and their drawbacks of TMS for cylindrical power batteries. Among these structures, air cooling falls short in meeting high heat dissipation requirements. Liquid cooling is expensive, intricate, and adds considerable weight. Phase Change Materials (PCM) are not yet prevalent in practical applications. Similarly, heat pipes are relatively uncommon in large high-power battery packs. To better align with the new energy vehicle industry's demands for top-notch performance, cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and reliability, this paper strongly recommends delving deeper into composite cooling solutions. Existing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based phase change materials (PCMs) with recyclability are not chemically recyclable because the raw materials of the PCMs cannot be obtained after recycling. Herein, we used a facile method to prepare a PEG-based form-stable PCM (FSPCM) using mannitol as the supporting material. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding between mannitol and PEG is strong, which gives rise to a PCM solid state even at 90 °C and prevents the leakage that normally occurs with pure PEG. More importantly, the FSPCM can be chemically recycled using butyl acetate, which is a satisfactory solvent for PEG but cannot dissolve mannitol. Thus, PEG and mannitol are obtained, with recycling rates greater than 90% for each. Additionally, there are high latent heat values for this PEG-based FSPCM, as well as excellent thermal stability and thermal reliability, suggesting the remarkable ability for thermal energy storage and thermal management.
