To compare success rates of trabeculectomy (TE) and Preserflo MicroShunt (PMS) in heterogenous glaucoma cohorts with regards to different pre- and postoperative therapeutic regimens. Data of 187 glaucoma patients who either received TE (73 eyes) or PMS implantation (114 eyes) between January 2018 and December 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. Surgical success and failure rates were analyzed within six months of follow-up. Intraocular pressure (IOP) development over the course of follow-up was compared between both groups. Tertiary outcome measures were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), number and type of medications, frequency of postoperative complications and revision surgeries. Outcome measures underwent additional assessment based on subgroup categorizations, and failure time hazard ratios were computed. The success rates were comparable between both procedures (TE: 54.1%, PMS: 60.0%; p = 0.17). Both procedures showed significant IOP reduction (p < 0.01); however, overall IOP reduction was greater in the TE group than in the PMS group (TE: Reduction by 12 mmHg (188.9%), PMS: Reduction by 7 mmHg (51.3%); p = 0.01). The number of topical medications decreased significantly in both groups over the course of follow-up (TE: 4 to 0, PMS: 3 to 0; p < 0.01). While the number of complications and revision surgeries were similar in both groups, the time interval until the first revision surgery within the TE group was significantly shorter (TE: 13.5 d, PMS: 163 d; p = 0.01) than within the PMS group. No difference could be detected between TE and PMS with regard to the follow-up regimen. In particular, there was no significant difference in the need for 5-floururacil injections postoperatively (p = 0.29). Less invasive glaucoma surgery with the PMS appeared comparable to the TE within a heterogenous glaucoma cohort with regards to IOP development and freedom from medication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rationale: Pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) remain the most common cause of morbidity, recurrent hospitalization, and diminished survival in people with cystic fibrosis (PWCF) and are characterized by excess inflammation. Corticosteroids are potent, widely available antiinflammatory drugs. However, corticosteroid efficacy data from randomized controlled trials in PWCF are limited. Objectives: To determine whether adjunctive systemic corticosteroid therapy is associated with improved outcomes in acute CF PEx. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of Standardized Treatment of Pulmonary Exacerbations 2 (STOP2), a large multicenter randomized controlled trial of antimicrobial treatment durations for adult PWCF presenting with PEx, that included the use of corticosteroids as a stratification criterion in its randomization protocol. Corticosteroid treatment effects were determined after propensity score matching for covariates including age, sex, baseline forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), genotype, and randomization arm. The primary outcome measure was the change in percentage predicted FEV1 (ppFEV1). Symptoms, time to next PEx, and the incidence of adverse events (AEs) and serious adverse events (SAEs) were assessed as secondary endpoints. Phenotypic factors associated with the clinical decision to prescribe steroids were also investigated. Results: Corticosteroids were prescribed for 168 of 982 PEx events in STOP2 (17%). Steroid prescription was associated with decreased baseline ppFEV1, increased age, and female sex. Cotreatment with corticosteroids was independent of treatment arm allocation and did not result in greater mean ppFEV1 response, longer median time to next PEx, or more substantial symptomatic improvement compared with propensity-matched PWCF receiving antibiotics alone. AEs were not increased in corticosteroid-treated PWCF. The total number of SAEs—but not the number of corticosteroid-related or PEx-related SAEs—was higher among patients receiving corticosteroids. Conclusions: Empiric, physician-directed treatment with systemic corticosteroids, although common, is not associated with improved clinical outcomes in PWCF receiving antibiotics for PEx. Background: Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome, an age related microfibrillopathy having varied prevalence and associated with dense cataract, poorly dilating pupil resulting in challenging cataract surgeries. The present study aimed to evaluate pseudoexfoliation syndrome in eyes undergoing cataract surgery in tertiary care centre of Uttarakhand. Materials and methods: A hospital based prospective study carried out from January 2021 to June 2022 and approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee. A total of 1000 eyes of 1000 patients to be operated underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation including refraction, tonometry, gonioscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy for presence of pseudoexfoliation, cataract grading, and fundus examination. Patients with PEX were diagnosed and data analysed. Results: A total of 54 PEX cases were diagnosed with 29 (53.7%) males and 25(46.3%) were females having mean age of 67.48 + 9.79 years, mean CCT was 528.46 + 18.49 micron and mean IOP was 19.81 + 5.88 mmHg. Prior to cataract surgery, an IOP of more than 21 mm Hg was noted in 40.7% (n=54) of pseudoexfoliative eyes. PXM on pupillary margin present in 51 (94.4%), on anterior lens capsule in 37 (68.5%), on iris in 31 (57.4%), on cornea in 5 (9.3%), phacodonesis in 6 (11.1%), Iris transillumination defect in 3 (5.6%), PXM on trabecular meshwork in 24 (44.4%) and sampaolesi line in 13 (24.1%). Conclusion: PEX presents challenges that necessitate thorough preoperative planning for a safe surgery and a satisfactory postoperative result. Therefore, dilated anterior segment evaluation should be emphasised in daily practise to avoid early PEX patients from being undiagnosed

Summary: The oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of tree‐ring cellulose is used to evaluate tree physiological responses to climate, but their interpretation is still limited due to the complexity of the isotope fractionation pathways.We assessed the relative contribution of seasonal needle and xylem water δ18O variations to the intra‐annual tree‐ring cellulose δ18O signature of larch trees at two sites with contrasting soil water availability in the Swiss Alps. We combined biweekly δ18O measurements of soil water, needle water, and twig xylem water with intra‐annual δ18O measurements of tree‐ring cellulose, xylogenesis analysis, and mechanistic and structural equation modeling.Intra‐annual cellulose δ18O values resembled source water δ18O mean levels better than needle water δ18O. Large parts of the rings were formed under high proportional exchange with unenriched xylem water (pex). Maximum pex values were achieved in August and imprinted on sections at 50–75% of the ring. High pex values were associated with periods of high atmospheric evaporative demand (VPD). While VPD governed needle water δ18O variability, we estimated a limited Péclet effect at both sites.Due to a variable pex, source water has a strong influence over large parts of the intra‐annual tree‐ring cellulose δ18O variations, potentially masking signals coming from needle‐level processes. Purpose: To study the prevalence of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) in diabetics with senile cataracts and compare it to the prevalence in nondiabetic control group. Methods: Two hundred and fifty diabetics and 250 nondiabetics (age and sex matched) were evaluated for PEX deposition. Results: Chi-squared test was employed, and a P value < 0.05 was considered significant. In the PEX group, most patients belonged to the age group of 60-70 years (55.17%). Out of 18 patients with PEX, 11 (61.1%) showed bilaterality. There was a higher frequency of raised intraocular pressure (IOP; >20 mmHg) in PEX eyes (10.3%) than in the non-PEX eyes (5.9%). The PEX group had a higher number of eyes with cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) >0.6 (11.12%) than the non-PEX group (4.32%). Nuclear cataracts were more frequent in PEX eyes than non-PEX eyes, whereas PSC and mature cataracts were more prevalent in the non-PEX group. Most eyes had PEX deposition on the anterior lens capsule and pupillary margin. Of the 500 study eyes corresponding to the diabetic group, 418 had cataracts (rest pseudophakic), of which 28 had pseudoexfoliation, accounting for 6.7% of the total. In the nondiabetic control group comprising 500 eyes, 430 had senile cataracts (rest pseudophakic), of which 105 had PEX deposition, accounting for 24.4% of the total. Conclusion: According to our findings, diabetics have a lower prevalence of PEX than nondiabetics. Few such studies have been conducted so far, and none have been conducted in the Indian population. The Preserflo MicroShunt represents a novel glaucoma treatment device, necessitating long-term follow-up data to accurately assess its efficacy. The aim of this study is to report real-world data of a heterogenous glaucoma cohort who received Preserflo implantation at a specialized glaucoma clinic. A total of 160 eyes of 160 patients who underwent Preserflo MicroShunt implantation were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Patient characteristics, as well as success and failure rates, were assessed. The numbers of adverse events and revision procedures were recorded, along with any reduction in supplementary medication. The progression of intraocular pressure (IOP) was assessed over the course of 12 months, and fluctuations were analyzed. The overall success rate was 61.9% (complete success: 51.3%, qualified success: 10.6%). Revision surgery was performed in 25% of cases. Excessive hypotony occurred postoperatively in 54.4% of patients and regressed after 7 days in 88.8% of all cases. Median IOP decreased from 22 (interquartile range (IQR): 17–27) mmHg preoperatively to 14 (IQR 12–16) mmHg at 12 months postoperatively (p < 0.01). The median number of antiglaucomatous agents decreased from three to zero at latest follow-up. The Preserflo MicroShunt achieved a noticeable reduction in IOP over the course of 12 months in glaucoma patients, irrespective of disease severity or disease subtype. The microRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs (19–25 nt) that regulate the level of gene expression at the post-transcriptional stage. Altered miRNAs expression can lead to the development of various diseases, e.g., pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG). In this study, we assessed the levels of miRNA expression in the aqueous humor of PEXG patients using the expression microarray method. Twenty new miRNA molecules have been selected as having the potential to be associated with the development or progression of PEXG. Ten miRNAs were downregulated in PEXG (hsa-miR-95-5p, hsa-miR-515-3p, hsa-mir-802, hsa-miR-1205, hsa-miR-3660, hsa-mir-3683, hsa -mir-3936, hsa-miR-4774-5p, hsa-miR-6509-3p, hsa-miR-7843-3p) and ten miRNAs were upregulated in PEXG (hsa-miR-202 -3p, hsa-miR-3622a-3p, hsa-mir-4329, hsa-miR-4524a-3p, hsa-miR-4655-5p, hsa-mir-6071, hsa-mir-6723-5p, hsa-miR-6847-5p, hsa-miR-8074, and hsa-miR-8083). Functional analysis and enrichment analysis showed that the mechanisms that can be regulated by these miRNAs are: extracellular matrix (ECM) imbalance, cell apoptosis (possibly retinal ganglion cells (RGCs)), autophagy, and elevated calcium cation levels. This study focused on the relationship between corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD) and the value of the company. It also examined how this relationship is affected by earnings management and corporate governance practices. The study includes 41 companies which constitute 85.4% of the companies listed on the Palestine Exchange (PEX) during the period (2012-2017). Data was obtained using content analysis and analysed using generalized least squares (GLS) regression. While a positive significant relationship was identified between CSRD and the value of the company, no significant effect of earnings management or corporate governance is observed on this relationship. The results showed that earnings management doesn’t significantly affect the level of CSRD or the company value. On the other hand, a positive effect of corporate governance on both the level of CSRD and the company value was reported. The study recommended that Palestinian companies should be more concerned about their social responsibility and its related disclosures. In addition, corporate governance practices of the Palestinian companies should be enhanced given its positive impact on the value of the company and on the level of CSRD. It is also beneficial to develop a local CSRD index to facilitate the evaluation of the Palestinian companies commitment to corporate social responsibility and its disclosure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are small non-coding regulatory RNAs that have been investigated extensively in recent years. However, the relationship between snoRNA and glaucoma is still unknown. This study aims to analyze the levels of snoRNA expression in the aqueous humor (AH) of patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG) compared to a control group and identify hypothetical snoRNA-dependent mechanisms contributing to PEXG. The AH was obtained from eighteen Caucasian patients, comprising nine PEXG and nine age-matched control patients. RNA was isolated, and a microarray system was used to determine the snoRNA expression profiles. Functional and enrichment analyses were performed. We identified seven snoRNAs, SNORD73B, SNORD58A, SNORD56, SNORA77, SNORA72, SNORA64, and SNORA32, in the AH of the PEXG and control group patients. Five snoRNAs showed statistically significantly lower expression in the PEXG group, and two snoRNAs had statistically significantly higher expression in the PEXG group compared to the control group. In addition, we identified two factors—CACNB3 for SNORA64 and TMEM63C for SNORA32, similar to PEX-related genes (CACNA1A and TMEM136). The enrichment analysis for four genes targeted by snoRNAs revealed possible mechanisms associated with glaucoma and/or PEX, but the direct role of snoRNAs in these biological processes was not proven. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a model green microalga capable of heterotrophic growth on acetic acid but not fatty acids, despite containing a full complement of genes for β-oxidation. Recent reports indicate that the alga preferentially sequesters, rather than breaks down, lipid acyl chains as a means to rebuild its membranes rapidly. Here, we assemble a list of potential Chlamydomonas peroxins (PEXs) required for peroxisomal biogenesis to suggest that C. reinhardtii has a complete set of peroxisome biogenesis factors. To determine involvements of the peroxisomes in the metabolism of exogenously added fatty acids, we examined transgenic C. reinhardtii expressing fluorescent proteins fused to N- or C-terminal peptide of peroxisomal proteins, concomitantly with fluorescently labeled palmitic acid under different trophic conditions. We used confocal microscopy to track the populations of the peroxisomes in illuminated and dark conditions, with and without acetic acid as a carbon source. In the cells, four major populations of compartments were identified, containing: (1) a glyoxylate cycle enzyme marker and a protein containing peroxisomal targeting signal 1 (PTS1) tripeptide but lacking the fatty acid marker, (2) the fatty acid marker alone, (3) the glyoxylate cycle enzyme marker alone, and (4) the PTS1 marker alone. Less than 5% of the compartments contained both fatty acid and peroxisomal markers. Statistical analysis on optically sectioned images found that C. reinhardtii simultaneously carries diverse populations of the peroxisomes in the cell and modulates peroxisomal contents based on light conditions. On the other hand, the ratio of the compartment containing both fatty acid and peroxisomal markers did not change significantly regardless of the culture conditions. The result indicates that β-oxidation may be only a minor occurrence in the peroxisomal population in C. reinhardtii, which supports the idea that lipid biosynthesis and not β-oxidation is the primary metabolic preference of fatty acids in the alga. Introduction:To evaluate the prevalence and demographic data of Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) in Somali patients with age-related cataract surgery.Methods:The study included 110 eyes of 110 patients planned for undergoing cataract surgery. Slit lamp biomicroscopy was used for classifying the cataract as nuclear, cortical, mature or hypermature. Goldmann applanation tonometer was used to measure the intraocular pressure. The inclusion criteria were: age >50 years, surgical indication because of age-related cataract (severity of lens opacification ≥2 in Lens Opacity Classification System III) and visual acuity

The main purpose of the current study is to examine the impact of Ramadan month on stock returns at the Palestine Exchange (PEX). The study sample consists of all Palestinian public shareholding companies listed in the PEX. The comparison period used in this study consists of 30 days before Ramadan month, 30 days after Ramadan month, and Ramadan month (30 days). This gives a total of 90 days in a year for ten years (2006–2016). The GJR-GARCH technique is used. The results of the study show that Ramadan month has a remarkable effect on the stock returns of the companies in the PEX. The results indicate a significant impact on earnings per share (EPS) in the PEX. Furthermore, there is a positive relationship between the stock returns and the market value in Ramadan month. The profits are increased in the industrial and investment companies due to the high demands in Ramadan month. Therefore, the companies should work to keep a steady performance in the whole year. Besides, the capacity of industrial and investment companies should be increased to meet the high demand in Ramadan month. This study will help Palestinian investors to effectively time their trading. This study is considered one of the pioneering studies that discuss the impact of Ramadan month on the stock returns in the context of Palestine Stock Exchange.

Abstract Background The involvement of cytokines in pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma has been demonstrated in several studies. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between three promoter polymorphisms −592C/A (rs1800872), − 819C/T (rs1800871) and -1082A/G (rs1800896) of interleukin 10 (IL-10) gene with susceptibility to pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX), pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG), and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods In this study, 114 PEX, 118 PEXG, 114 POAG patients and 126 healthy individuals from Iranian population were participated. Detailed ophthalmic examinations by an ophthalmologist including slit-lamp bio-microscopic examination, dilated examination of the lens, gonioscopy, and funduscopy were carried out on patients and controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples and ARMS–PCR was performed to detect promoter polymorphisms of IL-10. Results In all three SNPs studied, there was a significant difference in the genotype distribution between patients and control subjects. Results revealed that the AA genotype of IL-10 -592C/A SNP is associated with PEX. However, TT genotype of −819C/T and AA genotype of -1082A/G SNP are significantly associated with susceptibility to either PEX or PEXG and POAG disorders. Furthermore, the ACC haplotype containing the IL-10 -1082A allele was associated with PEX (P = 0.02, OR = 5.76, 95% CI = 5.17–24.49), PEXG (P = 0.006, OR = 7.54, 95% CI = 6.62–30.76) and POAG (P = 0.003, OR = 8.11, 95% CI = 7.13–33.15). Conclusions Our results demonstrated that IL-10 gene promoter polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to PEX, PEXG and POAG in Iranian population. Considering the fact that IL-10 polymorphisms are associated with various IL-10 expressions, further research is needed to explain its involvement in these disorders and the formation of extracellular fibrillar amyloid deposits in PEX and PEXG.

Purpose: Transscleral controlled cyclophotocoagulation (COCO) is a transscleral 810-nm diode laser cyclophotocoagulation that automatically adjusts the applied laser energy utilizing an optical feedback loop. The present study investigates the influence of pseudoexfoliation (PEX) on the efficacy of COCO in a Caucasian study population. Methods: Retrospective data from 130 consecutive eyes were analyzed during a 2-year follow-up. Baseline characteristics, intraocular pressure (IOP), number of IOP-lowering medications, visual field, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and secondary surgical interventions (SSI) were analyzed. The primary endpoint was IOP reduction at M24 compared to baseline, and the secondary endpoints were IOP course, reduction of IOP-lowering medications, surgical success, and IOP-lowering SSIs stratified by PEX and baseline IOP. Results: IOP reductions of −35, −39, −25, −25, −23, −34, and −36% could be achieved from baseline to D1, W1, M1, M3, M6, M12, and M24 (all p < 0.001), respectively, while there was a significant overall reduction over time (p < 0.001) in the number of topical IOP-lowering medications postoperatively. The proportion of eyes requiring additional systemic IOP-lowering medication reduced from 31 to 0% at M24 (p = 0.025). Eyes without PEX and IOP < 30 mmHg at baseline had the lowest risk for IOP-lowering SSIs (p < 0.03). BCVA dropped at M12 (0.25 [95% CI: 0.12–0.38]), and the drop persisted during the following 12 months. Conclusion: The present study demonstrates a midterm IOP-lowering effect after COCO while reducing the burden for topical and systemic IOP-lowering medications. Patients without PEX and IOP < 30 mmHg have a lower risk of SSI. The procedure per se cannot be excluded as causative for the decreased postoperative BCVA. PEX genes encode proteins involved in peroxisome biogenesis and proliferation. Using a comparative genomics approach, we clarify the evolutionary relationships between the 37 known PEX proteins in a representative set of eukaryotes, including all common model organisms, pathogenic unicellular eukaryotes and human. A large number of previously unknown PEX orthologs were identified. We analyzed all PEX proteins, their conservation and domain architecture and defined the core set of PEX proteins that is required to make a peroxisome. The molecular processes in peroxisome biogenesis in different organisms were put into context, showing that peroxisomes are not static organelles in eukaryotic evolution. Organisms that lack peroxisomes still contain a few PEX proteins, which probably play a role in alternative processes. Finally, the relationships between PEX proteins of two large families, the Pex11 and Pex23 families, were analyzed, thereby contributing to the understanding of their complicated and sometimes incorrect nomenclature. We provide an exhaustive overview of this important eukaryotic organelle.

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to assess 36-month outcomes after cataract surgery and implantation of two second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents (iStent inject, Glaukos Corporation, San Clemente, CA, USA) into eyes with predominantly primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEX). Methods This prospective, non-randomized, consecutive cohort study included eyes with POAG (n = 60), PEX (n = 15), appositional narrow-angle (n = 4), pigmentary (n = 1), or neovascular (secondary) (n = 1) glaucoma and cataract requiring surgery. All eyes (n = 81) underwent ab interno iStent inject implantation following cataract surgery. Effectiveness endpoints through 36 months included intraocular pressure (IOP), number of medications, and proportion of eyes with ≥ 20% IOP reduction, IOP ≤ 18 mmHg, and IOP ≤ 15 mmHg. Safety measures included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), adverse events, and secondary surgeries. Outcomes were evaluated for the overall cohort, and for the POAG and PEX subgroups. Results Preoperatively, 32.1% of eyes had undergone prior glaucoma surgery, 56% were on 3–4 medications, and 1 eye (1%) was medication-free. At 36 months postoperatively, mean IOP reduced by 37% (14.3 ± 1.7 mmHg versus 22.6 ± 6.2 mmHg preoperatively), and mean medication burden decreased by 68% (0.8 ± 0.9 versus 2.5 ± 1.1 medications preoperatively). IOP reduced by ≥ 20% in 78% of eyes; 100% of eyes reached IOP ≤ 18 mmHg and 71% reached ≤ 15 mmHg. Medication burden reduced considerably: 22 eyes (54%) were medication-free compared to 1 eye (1%) preoperatively; 1 eye (2%) required ≥ 3 medications compared to 45 eyes (56%) preoperatively; and 92.7% of eyes required reduced medications postoperatively. From 3 through 36 months, mean IOP remained ≤ 15.0 mmHg, and mean number of medications remained ≤ 0.9. Outcomes in the POAG and PEX subgroups included 33% and 32% lower IOP, and 68% and 64% fewer medications, respectively. iStent inject showed a favorable safety profile, including no intraoperative complications, minimal adverse events, and a stable CDVA. Conclusion This real-world cohort of eyes with various types of glaucoma and considerable disease burden exhibited durable and safe IOP and medication reductions through 36 months following iStent inject implantation with cataract surgery. Introduction: To evaluate the prevalence and demographic data of Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) in Somali patients with age-related cataract surgery. Methods: The study included 110 eyes of 110 patients planned for undergoing cataract surgery. Slit lamp biomicroscopy was used for classifying the cataract as nuclear, cortical, mature or hypermature. Goldmann applanation tonometer was used to measure the intraocular pressure. The inclusion criteria were: age >50 years, surgical indication because of age-related cataract (severity of lens opacification ≥2 in Lens Opacity Classification System III) and visual acuity <3/10. Pseudoexfoliation was defined as the presence of a differentlooking fibrillar white substance that formed an almost complete ring on the lens surface or on the pupillary edge. Results: The prevalence of PEX was 40.9% (45/110). It was bilateral in 71.1% (32/45) of the cases. The mean age of the sample was 67.4±8.9; however, that of patients with PEX (71.3±7.2 years) was significantly higher than in patients without it (64.7±9 years) (p<0.05). The prevalence of PEX was higher in patients with mature cataract (p<0.05) and older age (p=0.01). Mean intraocular pressure was higher in eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (23.3±3.5 mmHg) than in those without it (14.3±4.2 mmHg); and this finding was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: PEX is a common condition in the Somali population. It is associated with ageing, mature and hypermature type of cataracts, glaucoma and increased intraocular pressure. Background: The involvement of cytokines in pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma has been demonstrated in several studies. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between three promoter polymorphisms −592C/A (rs1800872), − 819C/T (rs1800871) and -1082A/G (rs1800896) of interleukin 10 (IL-10) gene with susceptibility to pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX), pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG), and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: In this study, 114 PEX, 118 PEXG, 114 POAG patients and 126 healthy individuals from Iranian population were participated. Detailed ophthalmic examinations by an ophthalmologist including slit-lamp bio-microscopic examination, dilated examination of the lens, gonioscopy, and funduscopy were carried out on patients and controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples and ARMS–PCR was performed to detect promoter polymorphisms of IL-10. Results: In all three SNPs studied, there was a significant difference in the genotype distribution between patients and control subjects. Results revealed that the AA genotype of IL-10 -592C/A SNP is associated with PEX. However, TT genotype of −819C/T and AA genotype of -1082A/G SNP are significantly associated with susceptibility to either PEX or PEXG and POAG disorders. Furthermore, the ACC haplotype containing the IL-10 -1082A allele was associated with PEX (P = 0.02, OR = 5.76, 95% CI = 5.17–24.49), PEXG (P = 0.006, OR = 7.54, 95% CI = 6.62–30.76) and POAG (P = 0.003, OR = 8.11, 95% CI = 7.13–33.15). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that IL-10 gene promoter polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to PEX, PEXG and POAG in Iranian population. Considering the fact that IL-10 polymorphisms are associated with various IL-10 expressions, further research is needed to explain its involvement in these disorders and the formation of extracellular fibrillar amyloid deposits in PEX and PEXG. Purpose: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is an age-related systemic elastic fibrillopathy disorder featuring an excessive production and accumulation of elastic fibre components in the extracellular matrix and is associated with impaired protective mechanisms against oxidative and cellular stress. PEX is diagnosed solely by ophthalmologists; however, PEX deposits have been detected in the connective tissues of many extraocular organ systems. This large, retrospective case-control study investigates whether patients with PEX have an increased risk of extraocular comorbidities. Methods: Cases and controls were drawn from consecutive patients over 50 years of age undergoing in-house ophthalmological operations under general anaesthesia or in standby preparedness for general anaesthesia. The participants were grouped based solely on PEX-positive (n = 325) or PEX-negative (n = 911) status. The same teams of ophthalmologists and anaesthesiologists uniformly documented every known systemic comorbidity of each patient through two independent rounds of standard anamnestic procedure and protocols in preparation for general anaesthesia. For the purpose of this study, every systemic comorbidity was registered from these forms and subsequently categorized into 17 disease groups based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) of the World Health Organization (WHO). Odds ratios (ORs) comparing comorbidities in cases and controls were adjusted for age and gender using logistic regression. Results: After adjustment for multiple testing, patients with PEX had an increased odds ratio for respiratory OR 2.1 [1.4; 3.0], cardiac OR 2.5 [1.6; 4.2], vascular OR 2.0 [1.4; 2.8], and urogenital conditions OR 2.3 [1.4; 3.7]. Renal and psychiatric comorbidities were nominally significant. While no substantially higher frequency was found for hernias, aneurysms, aortic dissection, or varicose veins among PEX-positive patients, higher rates of cardiac valve disorders and benign prostate hyperplasia were found among the PEX-positive individuals. Conclusion: In addition to confirming an increased risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, and urogenital comorbidities, our data found an increased risk of cardiac valve disorders and benign prostate hyperplasia among PEX-positive patients, which may be manifestations of the underlying systemic elastotic fibrillopathy and warrants further exploration, including future histological study. Purpose: To investigate in vitro the receptivity to the resin bonding process of Er:YAG-laser-prepared dentin surfaces compared to that of tooth cavities prepared with a conventional diamond bur. Materials and Methods: Fifty extracted human teeth free of caries were divided into two preparation groups of 25 teeth each. An Er:YAG laser was used to prepare cavities in one group, and a conventional diamond bur was used in the other. In each preparation group, 13 teeth were filled with the composite Diamond Crown and 12 with Z100 MP. The dentin/resin interface properties of the two different restorative compounds were investigated by visible light micro-Raman spectroscopy (μRS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: The measured Raman spectra showed typical resonance peaks of dentin. Resin contributions to the Raman spectra were also detected and were used to monitor the interface properties of the boundary region. In both mechanically and laser prepared samples, the diffusion depth of the Diamond Crown composite in dentin was limited to ca 10 μm. Deeper diffusion was observed at the boundary of dentin and Z100 MP. Conclusion: Under the conditions of this study, there were no appreciable differences between mechanically and laser-prepared samples in terms of dentin/resin interface characteristics. The obtained results again confirmed the validity of micro-Raman spectroscopy as a noninvasive method of examining the interaction between dentin surface and biomaterials. Vector-borne trypanosomatid parasite infections in tropical and sub-tropical countries constitute a major threat to humans and livestock. Trypanosoma brucei parasites are transmitted by tsetse fly and lead to African sleeping sickness in humans and Nagana in cattle. In Latin American countries, Trypanosoma cruzi infections spread by triatomine kissing bugs lead to Chagas disease. Various species of Leishmania transmitted to humans by phlebotomine sandflies manifest in a spectrum of diseases termed Leishmaniasis. 20 million people are currently infected with trypanosomatid parasites, leading to over 30,000 deaths annually and half billion people at risk of the infection. It is estimated that 300,000 Chagas infected people reside in the United States and 100,000 in Europe. Glycosomes are peroxisome-like organelles found only in trypanosomatids. Glycolysis occurs in the cytosol in all other organisms, but glycolytic enzymes and other metabolic pathways are compartmentalized inside glycosomes in trypanosomatids. Glycosomes are essential for the parasite survival and hence thought to be an attractive drug target. Our recent study [Dawidowski et al. Science (2017)] is the first to report small molecule inhibitors of glycosomal protein import. Using structure-based drug design, we developed small molecule inhibitors of the Trypanosoma PEX5-PEX14 protein-protein interaction that disrupt glycosomal protein import and kill the parasites. Oral treatment of T. brucei infected mice with PEX14 inhibitor significantly reduced the parasite levels with no adverse effect on mice. The study provides the grounds for further development of the glycosome inhibitors into clinical candidates and validates the parasite protein-protein interactions as drug targets.

Among thermoset polymers on the market, there is a crosslinked polyethylene (PEX), which is used for high voltage cable encapsulation. A large amount of waste is generate and disposed in this process, causing burden of production and environmental hazards. Thus, this project has proposed PEX chemical modification by sulfonation reactions, which consists in the insertion of SO3H groups in its structure. The Influences of the microwaves pre-irradiation, time of reaction and concentration of free SO3 in sulfuric acid were studied by FTIR-ATR, DRX and ICP. As a result, PEX-SO3H presented to be a strong cationic resin. The best results were that obtained in 30-minute reaction and sulfonic acid with 65% of free SO3. The microwave pre-irradiation was not effectiveness in this process. The PEX-SO3H obtained in this work shows at about 97% of efficiency in remove Ca2+ from water, which proves it can be used on water treatment. Although cost-benefit analysis was not satisfactory, this study expands new possibilities for thermoset recycling.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess 36-month outcomes after cataract surgery and implantation of two second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents (iStent inject, Glaukos Corporation, San Clemente, CA, USA) into eyes with predominantly primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEX).Methods: This prospective, non-randomized, consecutive cohort study included eyes with POAG (n = 60), PEX (n = 15), appositional narrow-angle (n = 4), pigmentary (n = 1), or neovascular (secondary) (n = 1) glaucoma and cataract requiring surgery. All eyes (n = 81) underwent ab interno iStent inject implantation following cataract surgery. Effectiveness endpoints through 36 months included intraocular pressure (IOP), number of medications, and proportion of eyes with ≥ 20% IOP reduction, IOP ≤ 18 mmHg, and IOP ≤ 15 mmHg. Safety measures included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), adverse events, and secondary surgeries. Outcomes were evaluated for the overall cohort, and for the POAG and PEX subgroups.Results: Preoperatively, 32.1% of eyes had undergone prior glaucoma surgery, 56% were on 3-4 medications, and 1 eye (1%) was medication-free. At 36 months postoperatively, mean IOP reduced by 37% (14.3 ± 1.7 mmHg versus 22.6 ± 6.2 mmHg preoperatively), and mean medication burden decreased by 68% (0.8 ± 0.9 versus 2.5 ± 1.1 medications preoperatively). IOP reduced by ≥ 20% in 78% of eyes; 100% of eyes reached IOP ≤ 18 mmHg and 71% reached ≤ 15 mmHg. Medication burden reduced considerably: 22 eyes (54%) were medication-free compared to 1 eye (1%) preoperatively; 1 eye (2%) required ≥ 3 medications compared to 45 eyes (56%) preoperatively; and 92.7% of eyes required reduced medications postoperatively. From 3 through 36 months, mean IOP remained ≤ 15.0 mmHg, and mean number of medications remained ≤ 0.9. Methods: Two hundred and seventy-five unrelated subjects, including 156 patients with PEX and 119 unrelated control subjects, were recruited from the University Hospital of Patras, Greece. All patients and controls were of Caucasian or European ancestry. The PRNP M129V (A/G) single-nucleotide polymorphism was genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reactions. Association of the polymorphism with PEX was assessed using the two-sided Pearson’s chi-squared or Fisher’s exact test.Result: No significant difference between patients and controls was observed in terms of frequencies of alleles and genotypes of the PRNP gene.Conclusion: Polymorphism at M129V of the PRNP gene was evaluated as a secondary risk factor for developing PEX. Flint, MI experienced two outbreaks of Legionnaires’ Disease (LD) during the summers of 2014 and 2015, coinciding with use of Flint River as a drinking water source without corrosion control. Using simulated distribution systems (SDSs) followed by stagnant simulated premise (i.e., building) plumbing reactors (SPPRs) containing cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) or copper pipe, we reproduced trends in water chemistry and Legionella proliferation observed in the field when Flint River versus Detroit water were used before, during, and after the outbreak. Specifically, due to high chlorine demand in the SDSs, SPPRs with treated Flint River water were chlorine deficient and had elevated L. pneumophila numbers in the PEX condition. SPPRs with Detroit water, which had lower chlorine demand and higher residual chlorine, lost all culturable L. pneumophila within two months. L. pneumophila also diminished more rapidly with time in Flint River SPPRs with copper pipe, presumably due to the bacteriostatic properties of elevated copper concentrations caused by lack of corrosion control and stagnation. This study confirms hypothesized mechanisms by which the switch in water chemistry, pipe materials, and different flow patterns in Flint premise plumbing may have contributed to observed LD outbreak patterns.

This study is driven by the motivation to examine the existence of probable equilibrium and dynamic relations between Palestine Stock Exchange (PEX) and Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE). Within the framework of international trade theories, this study uses Engle-Granger Co-integration procedure as an estimation model employing monthly time series data during the observed period from January 1998 till February 2012. It was discovered that there is a significant equilibrium relationship between PEX and TASE, but no empirical evidence was found on the presence of dynamic relations between the two stock markets using Granger Causality tests. Meanwhile, analysis of dynamic interactions over post-sample period by Impulse-Response Functions and Variance Decomposition indicate that movements in TASE Index do influence the performance of PEX.DOI: 10.15408/aiq.v7i2.1697

Plant peroxisomes are important components of cellular antioxidant networks, dealing with ROS generated by multiple metabolic pathways. Peroxisomes respond to environmental and cellular conditions by changing their size, number, and proteomic content. To investigate the role of peroxisomes in response to drought, dehydration and ABA treatment we took an evolutionary and comparative genomics approach. Colonisation of land required evolution of dehydration tolerance in the absence of subsequent anatomical adaptations. Therefore, the model bryophyte Physcomitrella patens, the model dicot Arabidopsis thaliana and wheat (Tricitcum aestivum), a globally important cereal crop were compared. Three sets of genes namely ‘ PTS1 genes’ (a proxy for genes encoding peroxisome targeted proteins), PEX genes (involved in peroxisome biogenesis) and genes involved in plant antioxidant networks were identified in all 3 species and their expression compared under drought (dehydration) and ABA treatment. Genes encoding enzymes of β-oxidation and gluconeogenesis, antioxidant enzymes including catalase and glutathione reductase and PEX3 and PEX11 isoforms showed conserved up-regulation, and peroxisome proliferation was induced by ABA in moss. Interestingly, expression of some of these genes differed between drought sensitive and resistant genotypes of wheat in line with measured photosynthetic and biochemical differences. Polymer pipes in walls can melt during a building fire, leaving an avenue for fire and smoke to spread. Firestop products aim to mitigate this, but their rapid development is impeded by the lack of appropriate, standardised laboratory tests for polymer pipes at elevated temperatures. We have created a suitable test protocol which can be easily implemented in the laboratory. We have carried out testing, using this protocol, on two common polymer pipes. The results show that PEX and PEX-Al-PEX pipes exhibit similar behaviour when tested at room temperature, but very different results at elevated temperatures. PEX-Al-PEX pipe, at elevated temperatures is observed to crush under a significantly lower load than PEX. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is a late onset disorder of extracellular matrix turnover, associated systemically with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. To evaluate the suggested association of polymorphisms of homocysteine metabolism genes MTHFR (rs1801131, rs1801133) and MTHFD1 (rs8006686) with PEX.Methods: A case-control association study was undertaken, comprising a total of 1472 individuals including 860 unrelated PEX cases and 612 ethnic-matched cataract controls (CC). All the study subjects were genotyped for three SNPs using the TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. Association and statistical analysis were performed with PLINK 1.07 and STATA 11.1.Results: Among the three SNPs genotyped, MTHFR polymorphisms did not exhibit significant association with PEX (rs1801131; p = 0.549, rs1801133; p = 0.408). The intronic SNP rs8006686 showed nearly significant association (p = 0.069), and however did not remain significant after Bonferroni correction.Conclusion: Our study suggests no significant genetic association of MTHFR (rs1801131, rs1801133) and MTHFD1 (rs8006686) polymorphisms in South Indian PEX patients. Abstract: Aims: To study the stability of biofilms and water quality in pilot scale drinking water copper and PEX pipes in changing conditions (extra disinfection, magnetic water treatment, MWT). Methods and Results: Next‐generation sequencing (NGS) of 16S ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA) to describe total bacterial community and ribosomal RNA (rRNA) to describe active bacterial members in addition to traditional microbiological methods were applied. Biofilms from control copper and PEX pipes shared same most abundant bacteria (Methylobacterium spp., Sphingomonas spp., Zymomonas spp.) and average species diversities (Shannon 3·8–4·2) in rDNA and rRNA libraries, whereas few of the taxa differed by their abundance such as lower total Mycobacterium spp. occurrence in copper (<0·02%) to PEX (<0·2%) pipes. Extra disinfection (total chlorine increase from c. 0·5 to 1 mg l−1) affected total and active population in biofilms seen as decrease in many bacterial species and diversity (Shannon 2·7, P < 0·01, rRNA) and increase in Sphingomonas spp. as compared to control samples. Furthermore, extra‐disinfected copper and PEX samples formed separate clusters in unweighted non‐metric multidimensional scaling plot (rRNA) similarly to MWT‐treated biofilms of copper (but not PEX) pipes that instead showed higher species diversity (Shannon 4·8, P < 0·05 interaction). Conclusions: Minor chlorine dose addition increased selection pressure and many species were sensitive to chlorination. Pipe material seemed to affect mycobacteria occurrence, and bacterial communities with MWT in copper but not in PEX pipes. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study using rRNA showed that chlorination affects especially active fraction of bacterial communities.
