This study uses two waves of data from the China Family Panel Studies to investigate the effect of income on satisfaction with spouse's economic contribution among couples in China. We find that the level of personal income is important in determining one's satisfaction with spouse's economic contribution. The wife's income level tends to associate with the husband's satisfaction towards to wife's economic contribution in general and among dual-earner couples. The husband's income is not significantly associate with the wife's satisfaction in general, but it matters for dual-earner couples and husband-only earning couples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the complexity caused by these missing values, traditional estimation methods are ineffective. In this paper, an adaptive group LASSO-based imputation method is proposed for compositional data, consolidating the advantages of group LASSO and adaptive LASSO analysis techniques. Any socio-economic processes occurring in the country and world have an impact on the standard of living of the population. There are many indicators that determine the standard of living of citizens, among which we can highlight the income of people as the main component of their financial well-being. In a period of global political and economic upheavals, the relevance of the topic of human quality of life is beyond doubt. During the economic war organised by the West against Russia, the countries participating in this war are of interest. These include New Zealand, although it is clear that due to the distance from Russia and weak economic ties between the countries, there will be no significant mutual influence of the sanctions restrictions. The study has analysed the income of the population of New Zealand over the past 10 to 15 years, considering differentiation by various categories, such as geographical location, qualification, and source of income. The analysis has showed a certain increase in the income and, accordingly, in the standard of living of the country’s population in the period under review. An insignificant impact on this indicator of restrictive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic is revealed, however, with the certain social policy of the state, fluctuations in the income of citizens during this period were hardly noticeable. Their assessment by sources has reflected the significant share of small businesses in the country’s economy, which shows a high degree of liberalisation of the national economy of the state. The analysis of the citizens’ incomes by geographic regions has revealed a significant impact of urbanisation on the standard of living of the New Zealand’s population, which is a global trend.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to analyze whether the Brazilian tax model reinforces gender and class inequalities in the country. To do so, in addition to conducting a theoretical review, we analyze data from the Household Budget Survey (2017-2018) and the 2020 Brazilian income tax return. We conclude that the Brazilian tax structure reinforces gender and class inequalities in the country. Female taxpayers pay higher rates of income taxes and female-headed households pay higher rates of indirect taxes, whereas the totality of direct taxes show a higher tax incidence in male-headed households. As for the distribution of taxes by class, the analysis carried out by income decile indicates that families in the lowest decile pay the highest indirect and total tax burden when compared to all other deciles. The total direct tax burden falls more on families at the top but remains less than 10%, indicating the strong tax regressivity of Brazil.

This study aims to comprehensively examine the determinants of household poverty in Brazil, placing a specific emphasis on the heads of households as the primary unit of analysis. Household poverty is a critical and multifaceted issue in developing countries, a reality that holds true for Brazil as well. Understanding the intricate web of factors that contribute to household poverty is of paramount importance to policymakers, researchers, and advocates dedicated to poverty alleviation and socioeconomic development. Household poverty remains a persistent challenge in Brazil, with far-reaching social and economic consequences. To address this issue effectively, it is essential to identify the factors that contribute to poverty among households, particularly those led by individuals who are the primary income earners. These households often face unique economic and social challenges that demand targeted interventions. To analyze household poverty determinants, this study utilizes data from the 'Pesquisa Nacional por Amostras de Domicilios Continua' (Continuous National Household Sample Survey) (PNADC). The dataset provides comprehensive information on the individual characteristics of the household head and household-level attributes, offering a nuanced view of the factors at play. A probit model is employed to estimate the probability of a household head experiencing poverty, allowing for a examination of various factors. The research findings reveal several significant determinants of household poverty in Brazil. Firstly, households led by men are found to be less likely to be in a situation of poverty, shedding light on gender-related disparities in income and opportunities. Secondly, households with heads who have attained higher levels of education exhibit a lower probability of being in poverty, underscoring the importance of education as a pathway out of poverty. Moreover, urban households are found to be less prone to poverty compared to their rural counterparts, since households led by individuals who work in agricultural-related activities are more likely to experience poverty. This emphasizes the need for targeted rural development strategies. Additionally, households located in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil face a higher likelihood of poverty, possibly due to regional economic disparities that require specific policy attention. These findings have important policy implications for poverty alleviation efforts in Brazil. Policymakers should consider targeted interventions that focus on improving access to education, particularly in regions with higher poverty rates, as education is a powerful tool for poverty reduction. Efforts to promote gender equality and enhance economic opportunities in rural areas are also essential to address the diverse causes of poverty. Additionally, regional disparities in poverty should be addressed through comprehensive regional development initiatives that take into account the unique challenges faced by different areas of the country. Our results also highlight the importance of community-specific social programs, including conditional-cash transfers and incentives for childhood education, which can play a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of poverty in Brazil's diverse communities. The income of citizens reflects the degree of economic development of the country, and in the regional aspect – the degree of economic development of each region. Canada is very similar to Russia in its geographical location, nature and climate, so the standard of living of the population in this country is of interest. One of its indicators is the income of citizens. The state’s approach to personal income taxation reflects the general socio-economic policy in the country. The study analysed the tax burden on personal income in the provinces of Canada in 2000–2022, determined the dynamics of this indicator for the period under review, and identified the existence of correlation between the amount of income and the tax burden on it in the regional aspect. The results obtained found that in Canada, there is a conditional division into eastern provinces with a traditionally high tax burden, western provinces with a national average tax burden, and northern territories with a relatively low tax burden. A certain inverse relationship between the amount of citizens’ income and the tax burden on it has been established. In regions with high incomes, the tax burden is usually lower, and in regions with low incomes, it is generally higher. However, there are regions that are exceptions, which shows the relative financial independence of regional authorities in Canada. The dynamics of the tax burden on personal income in the analysed period reflected the impact of the crises of 2008 and 2020 when it decreased. This fact demonstrates the sensitive response of regional governments to the changing economic situation.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of private and public initiatives (financial literacy, entrepreneurship, remote work and government aid) on individual job loss and decrease in income during the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used an unbalanced panel data analysis with the National Household Survey for 2019–2020. The hypotheses are tested with a probit panel data model since the dependent variables are binary. Findings – The study findings indicate that financial preparedness reduced the probability of having a decrease in income, but only to informal workers in metropolitan Lima. Furthermore, entrepreneurship helped mainly female informal workers to reduce their probability of becoming unemployed in metropolitan Lima. Besides, the implementation of remote work as a substitute of face-to-face work was not enough to avoid the decrease in income in the case of informal workers and it was only effective to avoid unemployment in the case of formal workers in metropolitan Lima. Finally, public aid proved to be instrumental in mitigating the decrease in income, but only to informal workers in Metropolitan Lima. Research limitations/implications – The study results only apply for the first year of the pandemic. Practical implications – Policymakers should focus on increasing the financial preparedness of informal workers, especially in provinces. Social implications – Policymakers must expand unemployment benefits, and design public aid programs targeting informal workers in provinces. Originality/value – This is the first study that analyses the impact of private and public initiatives on the decrease in income and unemployment situation of Peruvian individuals during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The global population influx during the COVID-19 pandemic poses significant challenges to public health, making the prevention and control of infectious diseases a pressing concern. This paper aims to examine the impact of population influx on the spread of infectious diseases, with a specific emphasis on the mediating role of air pollution in this process. A theoretical analysis is conducted to explore the relationship between population influx, air pollution, and infectious diseases. Additionally, we establish a series of econometric models and employ various empirical tests and analytical techniques, including mediation effect test, threshold effect test, and systematic GMM test, to evaluate our hypotheses. The results indicate that: (1) Population influx directly and indirectly impacts infectious diseases. Specifically, population influx not only directly elevates the risk of infectious diseases, but also indirectly increases the incidence rate of infectious diseases by intensifying air pollution. (2) The impact of population inflow on infectious diseases exhibits regional heterogeneity. Compared to central and western China, the eastern regions exhibit a significantly higher risk of infectious diseases, exceeding the national average. (3) External factors influence the relationship between population influx and infectious diseases differently. Personal income and medical resources both help mitigate the risk of infectious diseases due to population influx, with medical resources having a more substantial effect. Contrary to expectations, abundant educational resources have not reduced the risk, instead, they have exacerbated the risk associated with population influx. This paper provides a scientific basis for formulating effective strategies for the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
