The ESA to support this study through its ESA-EXPRO+ measure., Through its Open Space Innovation Platform, in August 2019 ESA opened a campaign for novel ideas to address detecting, mapping and exploring lunar caves and lava tubes. Amongst these ideas, ESA selected the project “Daedalus” to participate in its Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) to study the feasibility and planning the mission. The Mission is planned to last one full lunar day (12+2 contingency), with the possibility to extend the mission time within the cave and to rely on communication with Earth in the following lunar day. The CDF Internal Final Report on Daedalus is now available on request. The Daedalus robot hosts two payloads, one lidar (responsibility University of Würzburg) and one stereoscopic panoramic camera (Daedalus-CAM, responsibility INAF). The present document has been issued to describe the Project Plan of the Daedalus–CAM imaging payload.

In this report we will show the calibration procedure and the obtained results for the definition of the intrinsic parameters of a wide-angle lens through the use of a set of acquisitions of a well-known calibration target. Spacecrafts continuously need for low cost and weight sensor easy to integrate in a plug-in approach and capable to improve platforms versatility while reducing integration time and complexity. This is particularly true for the new generation of small and micro satellites to be launched in constellation and formation. Controlling small satellites cooperation and protecting the space assets from debris are two important issues of current and future missions. The cost reduction and safety of space missions is a key issue for further expand European leadership in the Earth Observation and Communication sectors. The POLIFEMO (Panoramic Multifunctional Sensor for Small/Micro Satellite) is a unique solution for an integrated sensor capable to replace by one single unit the functions of Sun sensor, Earth sensor and Star tracker and, additionally, providing external situational awareness. POLIFEMO is based on an innovative lens with a very wide angle (with a hyper-hemispheric field of view) able to look at a field of view of 360 in azimuth (panoramic omnidirectional lens) and 270 in elevation (hyper-hemispheric capabilities), designed and patented by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). POLIFEMO, with that extremely high field of view and unique imaging detection capability, results in a small, low weight, low cost and reliable (no moving part, potentially failure point) space sensor. It is unique in the market of space sensors and suitable for many spaces and non-space missions (e.g., communication, weather, imaging, surveillance, deep space but also UAV/HAP). Progetti Speciali Italiani s.r.l., a SME active in developing microsatellite and space applications, has set up, during the phase 1 project, a very experienced team of engineering and commercial specialists for carrying on the proposed project. University of Napoli (Parthenope) is expert on developing satellites star trackers solutions. This paper reports a summary extracted from a more detailed BP (Doc: ECSME-PSI-POLIFEMO-BP-2016) which has been prepared within the EU-H2020 contract framework. The full BP is available on request.

Situational awareness is the key for maximizing the return of any operation, both for scientific and engineering assessments. SPACECLICK and INAF propose the OMNICAM, a novel camera system which can capture a 360° context view and an optically magnified portion of the same panorama with a single lens and sensor. The Bifocal Panoramic Lens (BPL) (designed by INAF researchers) is a lens capable of warping a panoramic Field-of-View (FoV) of 360° x 100° and simultaneously a round FoV of 20° in high-resolution. While the panoramic portion is always available for continuous monitoring surrounding environment, assets and ongoing operations, additionally the OMNICAM makes use of a pan/tilt mechanism to provide users of orientation capabilities for the magnified portion of the FoV.

Il CSN5, rispondendo alle esigenze di creare maggiori occasioni di dialogo e di networking e di mettere a fattor comune le esperienze maturate in settori strategici del nostro Ente, ha organizzato il primo “Forum della Ricerca Sperimentale e Tecnologica INAF” che si è svolto presso l’area di ricerca di Bologna nei giorni 22, 23 e 24 giugno 2022. L'evento aveva diversi obiettivi: - incrementare la reciproca conoscenza delle attività tecnologiche condotte nelle diverse strutture INAF; - favorire discussioni, scambi, sinergie; - promuovere il senso di appartenenza alla comunità INAF; - introdurre e coinvolgere il personale assunto negli ultimi anni, che non dispone di una visione di insieme di tutte le attività svolte dall’INAF; - stimolare le collaborazioni, anche al di fuori dei rapporti già esistenti; - far emergere eventuali problematiche, discuterne insieme ed individuare possibili soluzioni; - in generale, migliorare la capacità dell’Ente nel realizzare strumentazione sempre più sofisticata e complessa.

The ESA mission Comet Interceptor will target an Oort or interstellar comet during its first approach to the Sun. Meanwhile, the Vera Rubin LSST Survey will observe hundreds of active comets per month beyond 4 au from the Sun, where water vapor pressure is expected to be too low to eject dust. We discuss observations of dust tails at heliocentric distances larger than 4 au in order to retrieve the physical parameters driving cometary activity beyond Jupiter by means of a probabilistic tail model, which is consistent with the activity model defining the gas coma parameters due to the sublimation of carbon monoxide, molecular oxygen, methane, ethane and carbon dioxide since the activity onset at 85 au from the Sun. We find that: (i) All the observed dust tails are consistent with the adopted activity model; (ii) The tail fits depend on three free parameters only, all correlated to the nucleus size; (iii) Tail fits are always improved by anisotropic dust ejection, suggesting activity of Oort nuclei dominated by seasons; (iv) Inbound seasons suggest cometary activity before the ejection of protocomets into the Oort cloud, as predicted by the activity model; (v) Oort nuclei larger than 1 km may be characterized by a fallout up to ≈100 m thick deposited during ≈60 yr inbound; (vi) On the other side, Oort nuclei smaller than 1 km may appear more pristine than Jupiter Family Comets when observed at 1 au from the Sun.

La presente invenzione ha per oggetto un sistema di misura ottico non a contatto ed in particolare un sistema di misura non a contatto 3D in luce strutturata. In ambito medico scientifico è usuale testare l’efficacia di farmaci anti-5 tumorali, sia con esperimenti pre-clinici che clinici in vitro ed in vivo. Per accertare la reale efficacia del farmaco, è necessario utilizzare i cosiddetti modelli sperimentali della malattia. Si tratta di sistemi biologici in cui vengono ricreate sperimentalmente le stesse caratteristiche della patologia: si possono usare colture di cellule fatte crescere in laboratorio, i cosiddetti modelli in vitro, oppure si può ricorrere agli animali da laboratorio, per esempio topi, ed in questo caso si parla di modelli in vivo. I tumori sono inducibili nel topo mediante iniezione (intraperitoneale, intramuscolare, sottocutanea) di cellule tumorali. In questi modelli il principale parametro di valutazione dell’efficacia del farmaco è il volume tumorale dei topi trattati. Una volta che le cellule tumorali vengono inoculate, i topi sono trattati con farmaci antitumorali da soli e/o in combinazione dopodiché vengono seguite le fasi di crescita e proliferazione tumorale, misurando periodicamente, ad esempio giornalmente, le variazioni della forma e delle dimensioni del tumore. Questa misura viene fatta generalmente utilizzando un calibro a scorsoio con il quale vengono misurati la lunghezza “L” e la larghezza “W” del tumore e dalle quali si deriva il volume V della massa tumorale. Usualmente si approssima tale massa a quella di un ellissoide di rivoluzione il cui volume è espresso dalla formula V =p 6× L×W ×W ipotizzando che l’altezza sia pari alla larghezza (W). Questo tipo di misura del volume, presenta numerosi errori che dipendono sia dall'approssimazione nel calcolo del volume, dallo strumento di misura utilizzato ma anche dall'operatore stesso che la effettua. Si tratta infatti di misurare dei volumi molto piccoli, dell'ordine massimo di qualche centinaio di mm3 in cui come accennato la forma viene molto grossolanamente approssimata da un ellissoide di rivoluzione. In realtà, i tumori hanno generalmente delle forme abbastanza irregolari per cui l'approssimazione delle stesse con degli ellissoidi introduce errori nella misura del volume che possono essere dell'ordine del 20% e più. Il calibro a scorsoio ha una lettura millimetrica, con un nonio nel quale si può apprezzare visivamente il decimo di millimetro. Durante la misura con il calibro però le lunghezze da misurare vengono modificate dal processo di misura stesso, in quanto le masse tumorali sono costituite da tessuti molli che possono venire deformati a seconda dalla pressione con cui si chiude il calibro stesso, introducendo errori dell'ordine del 5%. Inoltre l'operatore che effettua la misura sceglie a priori le sezioni della massa da misurare in cui rilevare la lunghezza e la larghezza della stessa, per cui i valori registrati possono variare di diversi punti percentuali, non per un effettivo aumento o diminuzione del volume ma semplicemente per una differente scelta delle sezioni in cui effettuare le misurazioni a causa della forma irregolare delle masse di interesse. L'aumento giornaliero del volume della massa tumorale può essere dell'ordine del 5% a seconda dello stadio della malattia e considerati gli errori descritti in precedenza, l’analisi dell'efficacia di un farmaco rispetto ad un altro possono risultare falsate. Al fine di ovviare ai citati inconvenienti, sono stati sviluppati sistemi ottici non a contatto per misurare il volume dei tumori iniettati nei topi. Un esempio di sistema di misura ottico non a contatto è descritto nella domanda internazionale WO2005033620A2 a nome Biopticon Corporation. Tale sistema effettua sull’oggetto da misurare una scansione con una linea laser e contemporaneamente acquisisce le immagini con una camera sincronizzata. Il software del sistema riconosce la linea e calcola il volume, in quanto ogni immagine contiene solo una linea ed è quindi facilmente ricostruibile. Un importante inconveniente in tale tipo di sistema è che l’animale da laboratorio su cui condurre le misura deve essere tenuto fermo per un tempo dell’ordine di alcuni secondi mentre, in generale, i topi non si riescono a tenere fermi per più di un secondo. In questo contesto, compito tecnico precipuo della presente invenzione è proporre un sistema di misura ottico non a contatto che sia esente dai citati inconvenienti. Uno scopo della presente invenzione è proporre un sistema di misura ottico non a contatto che sia competitivo rispetto ad altri sistemi di misura noti. Un altro scopo della presente invenzione è proporre un sistema di misura ottico non a contatto che richieda un minore tempo di acquisizione delle informazioni morfometriche dei corpi indagati rispetto alle soluzioni note.

To propose an innovative methodology for the monitoring of the evolution of induced subcutaneous tumors in mice. Materials and Methods: A new 3D scannerable to measure the tumor mass volume is presented. The scanner is based on the projection of a fringe pattern onto the sample surface (structured light). The lines are diffused by the sample and then collected by a digital camera. The obtained 2D-image is treated by the scanner’s software thatextracts the 3D information and evaluates the samplevolume. Results: The 3D scanner has been successfully used in the measurement of subcutaneous HT-29 colorectal cancer xenografts treated with 5-fluorouracil, bevacizumab and their combination. Comparison with simple caliper measurements revealed important and significant differences between the two measurement techniques. Conclusion: The proposedmethodology is more effective than the usual approach basedon caliper measurements.The efficacy of a new anticancer drug should be alwaysverified by means of the so-called experimental model of the disease, where the characteristics of the disease are recreated in cell cultures, grown in the laboratory (in vitromodels) orin laboratory animals (in vivo models) (1). Considering the latter case, tumors may be induced in mice by subcutaneous injection of human tumor cells. Subcutaneous human tumor xenograft models are widely used because they recapitulate many aspects of the biology of human tumors, including sensitivity to anticancer agents (2). Once cancer cells areinoculated, the researchers carry out treatment with the anticancer drug and follow the daily evolutions in the shape and in volume of the tumor. The tumor mass volume of treated and non-treated mice must be statistically compared in order to assess the reliability of the treatment. The testin gof human tumors in subcutaneous sites have provided relevant and predictive information to the clinic. In fact,every clinically-approved anticancer drug was tested usingthis model, and showed significant antitumor effects beforeentering early-phase clinical trials (2).Although some experimental devices are available for the measurement of tumor volume from 3-dimensional images(computed axial tomography, positron-emission tomography,and magnetic resonance imaging), these systems are primarily designed for biological, chemical, and functionalstudies of animal models (3). As well-stated by Girit and colleagues, these devices usually require many preparative efforts and expensive materials (radioactive sources, contrastagents, and fluorescent chemicals), thus their use is notpractical for animal testing facilities (4).On the basis of these considerations, in partnership withPOEMA (Progettazioni Opto-Elettroniche MetrologiaAvanzata; Cagliari, Italy; www.poemaonline.eu), we developed an innovative small non-contact device (3Dscanner) capable of rapid, highly reproducible measurements of subcutaneous tumor volumes in mice. We outline the prototype characteristics, describing hardware and software features, and give some practical examples of its use.
