Aims: To obtain preliminary data on changes in gait from the use of a green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) extract product in working farm dogs with musculoskeletal abnormalities using accelerometry. Methods: New Zealand working farm dogs (n = 32) with signs of musculoskeletal abnormalities were enrolled in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled cross-over study. Each dog was allocated to one of six groups to receive three trial substances (180 mg full fat green-lipped mussel extract (GLME180); 220 mg full fat green-lipped mussel extract (GLME220); placebo) in one of the six possible different orders. Each trial substance was administered orally once a day for an 8-week period, with a 4-week washout in between each. Dogs wore a collar-mounted triaxial accelerometer for the study duration. Diet and activity were not controlled. Accelerations were recorded continuously and analysed (n = 27) in 10-second activity epochs partitioned into daytime and night-time periods. Analysis of activity during the daytime period was limited to epochs when dogs were gaiting faster than a walk. The median and IQR of activity were determined for the daytime and night-time. Additionally, the 75th and 90th percentiles of daytime activity for each 24-hour period were determined. Mixed effects linear regression models were constructed to determine if each trial substance altered the response variables. Results: During the daytime, the 90th percentile was higher when dogs were given GLME220 compared with the placebo (β coefficient 2.6; 95% CI = 0.25–4.94; p = 0.03). Dogs that started the trial with the GLME products had a higher 90th percentile activity compared with dogs that began with the placebo (β coefficient 26.26; 95% CI = 0.45–52.06; p = 0.046). The 75th percentile for activity was not affected by the GLME product. The daytime IQR was larger when dogs were given the GLME180 product compared with the placebo (β coefficient 1.25; 95% CI = 0.12–2.37; p = 0.03). Night-time median activity and the IQR was greater in dogs that started the trial with the GLME products than in dogs that began with the placebo. The night-time IQR for activity was greater for GLME180 than for the placebo. Conclusions: Administration of a low dose of the GLME-containing product increased peak activity in working farm dogs with signs of musculoskeletal abnormalities and may improve their performance. Clinical relevance: Even mildly affected working farm dogs might benefit from support of their musculoskeletal abnormalities, and this particular GLME-based product shows promise as an adjunct to other management strategies. The issue of microplastics (MPs) has emerged as a significant concern globally, with discussions surrounding the potential environmental impact of these tiny plastic particles becoming increasingly prevalent. This study aimed to identify the concentration and characteristics of MPs in hemolymph and organs (gills and hepatopancreas) of green mussels (Perna viridis) that are frequently consumed by people in Pangkajene Kepulauan, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Green mussels were collected from two different sampling sites for comparison. Screening was carried out on dispensed hemolymph and dissected organs to identify the characteristics of MPs. Surface seawater sampling was added as information on MP's characteristics from the mussel habitat. Visual observation of MP's characteristics using a stereomicroscope in laminar flow is to prevent contamination. The identification of MP's polymer type is using FTIR-ATR. The results showed that hemolymph, hepatopancreas, gills, and surface water were concentrated with MPs. Small (2–3.9 cm) green mussels accumulated more MPs than medium (4–5.9 cm) and large (> 6 cm). MPs characteristics of fiber shape, transparent color, and size 0.1–0.5 mm were dominant in all samples. A total of seven polymers of MPs were identified with polyethylene and polystyrene types most frequently found from all samples. Based on this study, green mussels are good for biomonitoring of MPs. Improved sustainability of aquaculture can be achieved by reducing product wastage post-harvest. Aquaculture of the green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, is an important industry for New Zealand, which increasingly exports to live markets. Live transport can keep mussels fresh, but mussels could also be susceptible to handling stresses. To remedy this, pre-treatments that make mussels metabolically depressed, and thus potentially less sensitive to external stressors, were explored. As indicators of depressed metabolism, heart rate (HR), inferred cardiac output (PCO), and relative gaping magnitude (RGM) were simultaneously monitored in mussels experiencing different temperatures, dissolved oxygen levels and anaesthetic (MgCl2) concentrations to compare their efficacy in inducing suppressed metabolism of adult P. canaliculus. We found complex interactions between HR, PCO, and RGM in response to these conditions; however, overall, these response variables were significantly correlated. Mussels showed depressed HR and PCO by up to 100% at 4 °C within 2 h, with correspondingly decreased RGM of up to 48%. Similarly, mussels immersed in 40 g L−1 MgCl2 suppressed HR by up to 97%, accompanied by up to 76% decrease in PCO, and a slight increase in RGM (11%) after 2 h. While responses were variable, low DO levels suppressed HR by up to 50%, yet PCO and RGM increased two- and threefold relative to control groups. The results of the present study indicated that 4 °C and 40 g MgCl2 L−1 were more effective conditions as pre-treatments than low dissolved oxygen lower the metabolism of P. canaliculus before live transport. The Asian green mussel, Perna viridis is an important aquaculture species in the family Mytilidae contributing substantially to molluscan aquaculture. We generated a high-quality chromosome level assembly of this species by combining PacBio single molecule sequencing technique (SMRT), Illumina paired-end sequencing, high-throughput chromosome conformation capture technique (Hi-C) and Bionano mapping. The final assembly resulted in a genome of 723.49 Mb in size with a scaffold N50 of 49.74 Mb with 99% anchored into 15 chromosomes. A total of 49654 protein-coding genes were predicted from the genome. The presence of 634 genes associated with the cancer pathway and 408 genes associated with viral carcinogenesis indicates the potential of this species to be used as a model for cancer studies. The chromosome-level assembly of this species is also a valuable resource for further genomic selection and selective breeding for improving economically important aquaculture traits and augmenting aquaculture productivity. The early stages of mussel farming are often inefficient with a large proportion of seed (spat) typically lost early in the production cycle. An effective approach for decreasing such losses is to grow spat to larger sizes in nursery systems prior to seeding. However, for such an approach to be commercially viable, spat must first be separated from their settlement substrates into a single seed format, that is, singulated. This study investigated the efficacy of three commercial protease enzymes (Enzidase PAP, PXT and BAP) and chlorine (NaOCl) in singulating Greenshell mussel (Perna canaliculus) spat from spat‐collector ropes. Two distinct experiments involved immersing segments of spat collector rope in seawater solutions with varying concentrations (2.5% or 5%) of each enzyme or chlorine (NaOCl) for different exposure times (10, 30 and 60 min for enzymes; 2 and 5 min for chlorine). After the singulation experiments, all spat were recovered with sieves and reintroduced into the tanks with renewed seawater. After 24 h of rearing, the recovery of alive spat was measured. Results indicate that in Experiment 1, involving spat ∼5 mm in size, the singulation rate was up to 65% for protease enzymes (i.e., in the case of 5% PAP at 30 min) and 61% for chlorine (i.e., at 5% for 2 min). In Experiment 2, involving spat ∼1.5 mm in size, the singulation rate was up to 85% for protease enzymes (i.e., in the case of 5% PXT for 60 min) and 78% for chlorine (i.e., of 2.5% for 5 min). However, these treatments generally resulted in elevated spat mortality, which was exacerbated by increasing concentrations and exposure times, resulting in recovery rates of up to 35% (i.e., for 2.5% PAP for 30 min) in Experiment 1 and 26.0% (i.e., for 5% chlorine for 2 min) in Experiment 2. These findings emphasise the necessity for consideration of chemical concentrations and exposure times to optimise the singulation process while highlighting challenges in achieving high post‐singulation survival rates. These insights contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of mussel farming practices, demonstrating the potential utility of protease enzymes and chlorination in singulating spat from settlement substrate prior to their transfer to nursery systems for further ongrowing. Limnoperna fortunei (L. fortunei) (Dunker, 1857), the golden mussel, is an invasive species possessing exceptional environmental adaptability and a destructive impact on water systems and artificial structures. To better conservation of freshwater ecosystems by controlling this mussel, it is essential to study its distribution, potential for invasion, environmental tolerance and biological traits.This paper outlines the distribution of L. fortunei in Asia and South America, as well as its potential for future invasion in freshwater habitats, along with the research methods employed.We find that the mussel had a temperature tolerance range of 8–35 °C and a pH range was 5–10, with some individuals surviving in extreme conditions for extended periods.We find that temperature was a decisive factor for success at reproductive stages, larval development and adult growth.The biological traits of L. fortunei are discussed, focusing on feeding habits, attachment characteristics and locomotion, with an emphasis on byssus structure, foot proteins and adhesion mechanisms. The study elucidates the impact of flow velocity, light exposure and substrate material on their attachment, with the optimal attachment being identified at a flow velocity of 0.3–0.9 m/s. Additionally, the mussel exhibits strong light avoidance performances and a preference for rough surfaces.Extensively‐researched control strategies are classified and summarized, primarily categorized into physical, chemical and biological control, with an outline of their respective strengths and limitations. Bivalves are known to be infected by filamentous fungi, many of which have pathogenic and toxicogenic properties, and may represent a risk to human health. The present study investigated the mycological characteristics of Perna perna obtained from Guanabara Bay, Brazil. The mussels were sealed individually in sterile bags, weighed and measured, and the internal organs were examined. The organs were grown in different culture media. All but one of the 31 mussels (96.7%) examined contained fungi, and a total of 84 fungal colonies were isolated. The genera identified were Aspergillus (40.5%), Didymella (35.7%), Penicillium (10.7%), Aureobasidium (1.2%), Cladosporium (1.2%) and Phaeoisaria (1.2%). The molecular sequences obtained 99.8 and 100% identity with Didymella sp., Phaeoisaria sp. and Aureobasidium pullulans, and were deposited in GenBank. This is the first record of Didymella and Phaeoisaria in a bivalve. The digestive gland was the organ with the greatest diversity of fungi genera. A number of the fungi identified here, as Aspergillus awamori, Aspergillus japonicus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillusversicolor and Aspergillus sydowii, are known to produce mycotoxins and others are opportunistic forms, which reinforces the need for the systematic monitoring of the study area to guarantee the safe exploitation of these bivalves for human consumption. Aquaculture has maintained a sustained growth trend over the last 50 years, worldwide and in Aotearoa New Zealand.This industry is known to have environmental consequences, such as impacts on benthos, water column and higher trophic levels. Some of these impacts have been thoroughly studied, while others, such as the effects on cetaceans, are not well understood.This study used passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) to assess, for the first time, the overlap between kūtai—New Zealand greenlipped mussel (Perna canaliculus)—farms and habitat use by endemic endangered Hector's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus hectori hectori) within the Banks Peninsula Marine Mammal Sanctuary.T‐PODs were deployed in six bays, three with mussel farms and three without, between 2018 and 2019. Occurrence of dolphins, expressed as 'dolphin positive minutes per day' (DPM/day), was modelled using generalized linear mixed models.Results showed a strong interaction between farm (presence/absence) and season (summer/winter), with fewer acoustic detections of dolphins in winter if farms were present. Furthermore, in bays with mussel farms, there were significantly more click train detections on the opposite side of the bay, compared to the side by the mussel farm.Considering that results from this study suggest potential displacement of the dolphins due to the mussel farms, the recommendation is a precautionary approach. Further expansion of aquaculture in Hector's dolphin habitat should be done carefully, taking into account their habitat use, and conducting intensive monitoring including a robust 'before and after' design prior to the establishment of new farms. Rare earth elements (REE) are essential components of many electronic devices that could end-up in solid waste disposal sites and inadvertently released in the environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the toxicity of two heavy REEs, erbium (Er) and lutetium (Lu), in freshwater mussels Dreissena polymorpha. Mussels were exposed to 14 days to increasing concentration (10, 50, 250, and 1250 µg/L) of either Er and Lu at 15 °C and analyzed for gene expression in catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), metallothionein (MT), cytochrome c oxidase (CO1), and cyclin D for cell cycle. In addition, lipid peroxidation (LPO), DNA damage (DNAd), and arachidonate cyclooxygenase were also determined. The data revealed that mussels accumulated Er and Lu similarly and both REEs induced changes in mitochondrial COI activity. Er increased cell division, MT, and LPO, while Lu increased DNAd and decreased cell division. Tissue levels of Er were related to changes in MT (r = 0.7), LPO (r = 0.42), CO1 (r = 0.69), and CycD (r = 0.31). Lu tissue levels were related to changes in CO1 (r = 0.73), CycD (r = − 0.61), CAT (r = 0.31), DNAd (r = 0.43), and SOD (r = 0.34). Although the lethal threshold was similar between Er and Lu, the threshold response for LPO revealed that Er produced toxicity at concentrations 25 times lower than Lu suggesting that Er was more harmful than Lu in mussels. The research included 120 specimens of Pinna nobilis cultivated at a commercial park for oyster (Ostrea edulis) and black mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) cultivation. Research was carried out from 2012 to 2016, prior to the start of the mass extinction of fan mussel in the Mediterranean During the study period, the average sea temperature at a depth of 3 m was 14.87 ± 4.22 °C, ranging from 7.83 to 24.90 °C. The age of the specimens at the beginning of sexual maturity was approximately three years. The average length of the specimens throughout the study was 293.01 ± 16.58 mm. Gonad status was monitored monthly by sampling. The gender ratio in the study was 46 females (38.4%), 50 males (41.6%), and 24 undetermined individuals (20%). In our study, the results showed that males mature slightly earlier than females. The main spawning season occurred during the warmer part of the year when seawater exceeded 18 °C, starting in May and lasting until November. Coastal biogenic structures, formed by ecosystem engineering species, often feature rough surfaces characterized by intricate topographies and highly threedimensional reliefs. Their surfaces are shaped by waves and tidal currents and reciprocally influence the ambient hydrodynamics, reflecting an equilibrium. Despite their significance, the impact of these surfaces on the ambient hydrodynamics remains underexplored due to limited knowledge of accurately replicating their complex topographies in experimental setups. The recent advent of advanced digital manufacturing presents an efficient means to manufacture highly complex, three-dimensional surrogate models for experimental modeling. This work explores the accurate replication of rough coastal biogenic structures for experimental modeling on the examples of an oyster reef and a mussel bed, utilizing a flexible design methodology and, for the first time, particle bed 3D printing with Selective Cement Activation (SCA) as a fabrication and manufacturing method. A workflow is proposed, which includes an iterative surrogate model development based on in-situ topographical features, requirements of the experimental setup, and parameters of the particle bed 3D printer with SCA. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology in achieving highly accurate surrogate surfaces of complex coastal biogenic structures by validation against a set of topographical features relevant to hydraulic roughness. Particle bed 3D printing with SCA proved to be a suitable method to manufacture complex surrogate surfaces for experimental modeling, offering advantages such as independence of production time from surface complexity. However, challenges persist in achieving exact comparability between the manufactured surrogate surface and the real coastal biogenic structures, particularly for surfaces with very high complexity. Nonetheless, the manufactured generic surrogate surfaces enable detailed investigations into the influence of complex coastal biogenic structures on the ambient hydrodynamics, thereby enhancing the understanding of the processes governing wave energy dissipation attenuation, turbulence production, and vertical mixing - critical for efficient application as a nature-based solution on coastal protection or restoration efforts. The assessment of site suitability is a crucial step for informing future successful species reintroductions. It ensures that translocated species have the highest chance of survival in their new environment while minimising ecological risks. However, it can be challenging when risk factors are unknown, especially when working with sessile species that cannot easily relocate to more favourable conditions. Under these scenarios, rapid (1-2 week-long), small-scale (< 1 m²) experimental translocations can help reduce uncertainty and improve restoration outcomes. This study conducted small-scale experimental translocations of green-lipped mussels, Perna canaliculus, to 11 shallow coastal sites spread across Tık? apa Moana/the Hauraki Gulf, Aotearoa/New Zealand to investigate the relationship between predator abundance, environmental factors, and mussel loss to help refine existing site selection criteria. The total number of known mussel predators counted from timelapse images was used as a proxy for potential predator pressure. Translocated mussel survival ranged from 10 - 99% and was best predicted by current speed, wind direction, predator abundance, water clarity, and depth (adjusted R² = 0.505). Predator abundance was best explained by site location (p = 0.001) and had weak correlations among environmental parameters (Rho = 0.067). These results suggest that small, short-term (1-2 week) experimental translocations can help to refine site selection criteria and reduce uncertainty in the site-selection process for larger-scale shellfish reintroduction efforts with unknown and/or hard-tocontrol risk factors. This study surveyed freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) in 116 lakes and reservoirs east of the Missouri River in South Dakota, USA, during 2017. Using two-person–hour/site timed searches, evidence of a total of 1789 mussels, including 1053 live mussels, was obtained from 50 waters. Nine species, from two different orders, were found in lakes and reservoirs throughout five of the six major river drainages east of the Missouri River. The native species observed included Giant Floater Pyganodon grandis, Fatmucket Lampsilis siliquoidea, Threeridge Amblema plicata, White Heelsplitter Lasmigona complanata, Wabash Pigtoe Fusconaia flava, Deertoe Truncilla truncata, and Pink Heelsplitter Potamilus alatus. Giant Floater was the most widespread and abundant species observed, representing 63.3% of the live mussels sampled. Two non-native species, Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha and Chinese Basket Clam Corbicula fluminea, were also documented from three water bodies in the lower Missouri River drainage. Overall, mussel abundance was negatively correlated with lake water conductivity and positively correlated with turbidity. Freshwater mussels provide invaluable ecological services but are threatened by habitat alteration, poor water quality, invasive species, climate change, and contaminants, including contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Contaminants of emerging concerns are well documented in aquatic environments, including the Great Lakes Basin, but limited information is available on how environmentally relevant mixtures affect freshwater mussel biology throughout their varied life stages. Our main goal was to assess mussels' reproductive output in response to exposure to agricultural and urban CEC mixtures during glochidial development through juvenile transformation and excystment focusing on how exposure duration and treatment affect: (1) the number of glochidia prematurely released by brooding females, (2) glochidial transformation through host‐fish excystment, and (3) the number of fully metamorphosed juveniles able to continue the lifecycle. Mussels and host fish were exposed to either a control water (CW), control ethanol (CE), agriculture CEC mixture (AM), or urban CEC mixture (UM) for 40 and 100 days. We found no effect from treatment or exposure duration on the number of glochidia prematurely released. Fewer partially and fully metamorphosed AM juveniles were observed during the 100‐day exposure, compared with the 40‐day. During the 40‐day exposure, CW produced more fully metamorphosed individuals compared with CE and UM, but during the 100‐day exposure AM produced more fully metamorphosed individuals compared with the CW. There was reduction in fully metamorphosed juveniles compared with partially metamorphosed for CE and UM during the 40‐day exposure, as well as in the CW during the 100‐day exposure. These results will be important for understanding how mussel populations are affected by CEC exposure. The experiments also yielded many insights for laboratory toxicology exposure studies. This study presents the use of a low-temperature hydrothermal method for extracting calcium sources from green mussel shell (P. Viridis) wastes and converting them into synthetic nanosized hydroxyapatite (HA). In this study, raw mussel shells were washed, pulverised, and sieved to start producing a fine calcium carbonate-rich powder. XRD quantitative analysis confirmed that the powder contains 97.6 wt. % aragonite. This powder was then calcined for 5 h at 900 °C to remove water, salt, and mud, yielding a calcium-rich feedstock with major minerals of calcite (68.7 wt.%), portlandite (24.7 wt.%), and minor aragonite (6.5 wt.%). The calcined powders were dissolved in aqueous stock solutions of HNO3 and NH4OH before hydrothermally reacting with phosphoric acid [(NH4)2HPO4], yielding pure, nanoscale (16-18 nm) carbonated HA crystals, according to XRD, FT-IR, and SEM analyses. The use of a low-temperature hydrothermal method for a feedstock powder produced by the calcination of low-cost mussel shell wastes would be a valuable processing approach for the industry's development of large-scale hydroxyapatite nanoparticle production. Research on the microbiota associated with marine invertebrates is important for understanding host physiology and the relationship between the host and the environment. In this study, the microbiota of the green mussel Perna viridis was characterized at the tissue scale using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing and compared with the microbiota of the surrounding environment. Different mussel tissues were sampled, along with two environmental samples (the mussel's attachment substratum and seawater). The results showed that the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Spirochaetae were dominant in mussel tissues. The bacterial community composition at the family level varied among the tissues of P. viridis. Although the microbiota of P. viridis clearly differed from that of the surrounding seawater, the composition and diversity of the microbial community of the foot and outer shell surface were similar to those of the substratum, indicating their close relationship with the substratum. KEGG prediction analysis indicated that the bacteria harbored by P. viridis were enriched in the degradation of aromatic compounds, osmoregulation, and carbohydrate oxidation and fermentation, processes that may be important in P. viridis physiology. Mytilus edulis is a commercially and ecologically important species found along the east coast of the United States. Ecologically, M. edulis improves water quality through filtration feeding and provides habitat formation and coastal protection through reef formation. Like many marine calcifiers, ocean warming, and acidification are a growing threat to these organisms—impacting their morphology and function. Museum collections are useful in assessing long-term environmental impacts on organisms in a natural multi-stressor environment, where acclimation and adaptation can be considered. Using the American Museum of Natural History collections ranging from the early 1900s until now, we show that shell porosity changes through time. Shells collected today are significantly more porous than shells collected in the 1960s and, at some sites, than shells collected from the early 1900s. The disparity between porosity changes matches well with the warming that occurred over the last 130 years in the north Atlantic suggesting that warming is causing porosity changes. However, more work is required to discern local environmental impacts and to fully identify porosity drivers. Since, porosity is known to affect structural integrity, porosity increasing through time could have negative consequences for mussel reef structural integrity and hence habitat formation and storm defenses. The New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel (Perna canaliculus) is endemic to New Zealand and contributes to the success of the country's aquaculture industry. However, summer mortality and potential disease outbreak events are having an increasing effect on the growth of this industry. The cause of these mortalities remains unknown, and histopathological studies of the pathogen and parasites in mussels are still incomplete. In the present study, a histological approach was used to identify pathogens and parasites, as well as immunological tissue responses in unhealthy- and healthy-looking P. canaliculus during a summer mortality event in 2018. A highly significant association between health conditions and the presence of Perkinsus olseni in mussels was observed. A higher prevalence of P. olseni, Apicomplexan-X (APX), and bacterial (rods and cocci) infections were noted in the unhealthy-looking mussels than in the healthy-looking mussels. In an assessment of stains, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining appeared to be the best method for general pathological and anatomical characterization, while Giemsa provided the clearest visual definition of bacteria. In this aspect, it was comparable to Ziehl–Neelsen (ZN) in apparent sensitivity. Although Gram and ZN staining revealed bacterial cells marginally better than with H&E, their differential staining could not be assessed as no Gram-positive or acid-fast bacteria were seen, and no mussel-positive controls were available for comparison. Contaminants compounds like Heavy Metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) are primarily sourced from industrial and urban areas. As pollutants, these chemical elements and compounds are potentially toxic and present the capacity to negatively impact the ecosystem, especially the most sensitive ones such as estuaries. Bivalves' species have been successfully utilized as monitoring tools to evaluate pollutants bioaccessibility around the globe. The present study assessed heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Ni, Fe, Cr, Cu and Pb), As and PAH's levels in two mollusk species (Perna perna and Crassostrea rhizophorae) from Santos Estuarine System, in São Paulo State, in order to compare the effectiveness of each species in the biomonitoring process. According to the obtained data, Perna perna mussels may be better indicators of environmental pollution than Crassostrea rhizophorae oysters for some metals (Iron and Nickel) and hydrocarbons. Simple Summary: Biological invasion, particularly by the invasive mussel Mytella strigata (Hanley, 1843), has led to a significant decline in the population of native Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) in western Pacific regions. This study compared the intestinal microbiota, metabolome, and key digestive enzymes of these two competing mussels to elucidate their differences from intestinal microbiota and metabolic points. The analysis revealed differences in the abundance of Bacteroidota related to carbohydrate degradation, as well as enriched metabolites and higher carbohydrase activities in M. strigata compared to P. viridis. Recently, owing to exploitation competition with an invasive mussel, Mytella strigata (Hanley, 1843), there has been a drastic decrease in the population of native Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) in several western Pacific regions. In the present study, intestinal microbiota, metabolome, and key digestive enzyme activities were compared between the two competing mussels, M. strigata and P. viridis, to elucidate the differences in intestinal microbiota and metabolic points. We observed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota were the three predominant bacterial phyla in the two species. The relative abundance of Bacteroidota related to carbohydrate-degrading ability was significantly higher in M. strigata than in P. viridis. Compared to P. viridis, different metabolites including maltose and trehalose were enriched in M. strigata. Lastly, higher carbohydrases activities of alpha-amylase, cellulase, and xylanase were observed in M. strigata than in P. viridis. These differences might play an important role in the adaptation process of M. strigata to the new environment. The consumption of seafood is crucial for food security, but poor hygiene along the food production chain can result in low microbiological quality, posing significant risks for public health and seafood quality. Thus, this study aimed to assess the microbiological quality and antimicrobial sensitivity of E. coli from 69 samples of illegally marketed shrimp and mussels in the Vitória Region, Brazil. These foods exhibited poor microbiological quality due to high counts of mesophilic, psychrotrophic, and enterobacteria microorganisms. While this issue is widespread in this area, shrimp samples displayed higher microbial counts compared to mussels, and fresh mussels had elevated counts of enterobacteria compared to frozen ones. Among the 10 E. coli isolates, none carried the genes blaCTX-M-1, blaCTX-M-2, blaCTX-M-3, blaCTX-M-15, mcr-1, mcr-2, mcr-3, mcr-4, and tet, associated with antibiotic resistance. Phenotypical resistance to tetracycline and fosfomycin was not observed in any isolate, while only 20% demonstrated resistance to ciprofloxacin. Regarding ampicillin and amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, 60% of isolates were resistant, 10% showed intermediate susceptibility, and 30% were sensitive. One isolate was considered simultaneously resistant to β-lactams and quinolones, and none were conserved as ESBL producers. Historically, 23 freshwater mussel species have been documented from the Buffalo National River (BNR), a 246 km, free-flowing river in northern Arkansas. The potential threats to BNR include land use/land cover changes, eutrophication, recreation, physical habitat changes, and various climate change-related effects. Twelve quantitative mussel bed sites were established and then sampled using a stratified random sampling protocol to evaluate the long-term changes between 2006 and 2020–2021 in population and assemblage characteristics. We compared (1) overall mussel bed persistence, sampling confidence levels and study-wide relative abundances, and compared species' size and size-frequency distributions; (2) 10 overall site assemblage variables using paired t-tests; (3) site-level mean density, richness, and diversity indices using pair-wise Mann–Whitney U statistics; and (4) assemblage composition using Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling. The major findings included the following: (1) sampling efforts based on a targeted 80% confidence level appears relatively robust, (2) BNR mussel assemblage composition and structure were relatively stable (however, small mussel bed persistence is a concern), (3) 7 of 23 sites were outliers based on freshwater mussel composition and habitat characteristics, and (4) assemblage composition changed with three species declining (Actinonaias ligamentina, Lasmigona costata, and Ptychobranchus occidentalis) and four species increasing (Cambarunio hesperus, Cyclonaias tuberculata, Eurynia dilatata, and Venustaconcha pleasii) between monitoring events. Objective: Using bivalves to indicate aquatic pollutants was favorable for discerning the negative effects of high levels of metal accumulation in tissue. We investigated the correlation between trace metal accumulation and the tissue oxidative response of two bivalves. Methods: The Asian green mussel Perna viridis and the blood cockle Tegillarca granosa were sampled along with seawater and sediments from three locations around Pattani Bay, Thailand. Accumulation of nine trace metals (cadmium, cobalt, copper, chromium, nickel, manganese, iron, zinc, and lead) in seawater, sediments, and tissue and the oxidative tissue response were evaluated. Metal bioaccumulation factor, biota–sediment accumulation factor, and histopathology were also indicated. Result: The present study found that P. viridis and T. granosa were macroconcentrators and bioaccumulative of cadmium, and their tissue accumulation of cadmium was strongly related to lipid peroxidation activation. Perna viridis exhibited a higher oxidative response than T. granosa, as indicated by malondialdehyde, catalase, and reduced glutathione levels. Conclusion: The present study indicated that P. viridis and T. granosa were macroconcentrators and bioaccumulative of cadmium, and their tissue accumulation of cadmium was strongly related to lipid peroxidation activation. Research has shown discernible negative effects of a high level of metal accumulation in tissue, and deformed and damaged tissues were present in the gills, digestive glands, intestines, and feet of P. viridis and T. granosa. More than 4700 nominal family-group names (including names for fossils and ichnotaxa) are nomenclaturally available in the order Coleoptera. Since each family-group name is based on the concept of its type genus, we argue that the stability of names used for the classification of beetles depends on accurate nomenclatural data for each type genus. Following a review of taxonomic literature, with a focus on works that potentially contain type species designations, we provide a synthesis of nomenclatural data associated with the type genus of each nomenclaturally available family-group name in Coleoptera. For each type genus the author(s), year of publication, and page number are given as well as its current status (i.e., whether treated as valid or not) and current classification. Information about the type species of each type genus and the type species fixation (i.e., fixed originally or subsequently, and if subsequently, by whom) is also given. The original spelling of the family-group name that is based on each type genus is included, with its author(s), year, and stem. We append a list of nomenclaturally available family-group names presented in a classification scheme. Because of the importance of the Principle of Priority in zoological nomenclature, we provide information on the date of publication of the references cited in this work, when known. Several nomenclatural issues emerged during the course of this work. We therefore appeal to the community of coleopterists to submit applications to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (hence- forth "Commission") in order to permanently resolve some of the problems outlined here. The nutritional condition of seed mussels (spat) at the time of seeding is thought to play a major role in influencing spat losses on mussel farms, with nutritionally compromised spat thought to be more likely to be lost from aquaculture substrata than those in good condition. New Zealand's Greenshell™ mussel (Perna canaliculus) aquaculture industry relies almost exclusively (∼85%) on wild caught spat, with the vast majority, typically > 90%, lost shortly after being seeded onto coastal mussel farms. This study sought to quantify the extent of the variability in the nutritional condition (i.e., calorific, protein, lipid and carbohydrate content) of samples of spat used by the Greenshell™ industry between 2014 and 2021 (i.e., wild caught and hatchery produced) as a first step towards determining whether variability in nutritional condition may be a significant contributor to the marked variation observed in spat performance after it is seeded onto coastal farms. All parameters measured were highly variable among wild spat samples, with all but lipid content varying, including for samples of wild spat harvested at different times within the same month. Furthermore, there were no clear patterns in the nutritional condition of spat across months or years, suggesting environmental factors that limit feeding during the harvest and transport of spat may be contributing to marked differences in the quality of spat being used by the industry to seed farms. These results provide a baseline for assessing the nutritional condition of Greenshell™ spat and point towards a need to develop interventions to improve the quality of wild spat supply for this industry to help and prevent the ongoing massive losses of spat from farms. The New Zealand's Greenshell™ mussel (Perna canaliculus) aquaculture industry is being affected by summer mortality events associated with increasing seawater temperatures and pathogens. In this study, challenge experiments were conducted to investigate, for the first time, the effects of pathogen coinfection on the survivability and haemolymph immune responses of juvenile and adult mussels. Animals were injected with marine broth (control), Vibrio mediterranei, Photobacterium swingsii, or a mixture of V. mediterranei and P. swingsii. Then, mussel survival was monitored for 72 h, and haemolymph was sampled for bacterial quantification and metabolomics analyses at 24‐ and 48‐h post challenge. Coinfected adults and juveniles showed 100% mortality. Bacterial colony counts in haemolymph decreased as infection time continued, especially in juveniles. The haemolymph metabolome of mussels exposed to single bacterial species and coinfection showed response changes largely within energy metabolism. Mussels infected with V. mediterranei exhibited increased metabolites linked to the glutathione pathway, branched‐chain amino acids, and others over time, supporting structural functions. Conversely, mussels infected with P. swingsii showed no metabolic differences over time. The coinfection group exhibited large decreases in important metabolites, such as fatty acids as an alternative energy source and amino acids to support immune functions and protein synthesis. Transport out of the water is one of the most challenging events for juvenile Perna canaliculus and can be a highly inefficient process, with many juveniles subsequently being lost following extended periods of emersion. Hardening techniques offer a possible method for reducing transport-related stress. In this study, different hardening treatments (short, long and intermittent sub-lethal emersion) were used to prepare ~1.2 mm P.canaliculus for transport (20 h) and subsequent reoxygenation stress during re-immersion (i.e., recovery). The oxidative stress responses, resettlement behaviour, respiration rates and survival of the mussels after transport and during recovery were all assessed. Short emersion (1 h) as a hardening treatment prior to transport did not cause major stress to the mussels, which maintained respiration at control levels, showed significantly stimulated antioxidant defences during recovery, showed greater resettlement behaviour and remained viable after 24 h of recovery. In comparison, the long and intermittent emersion treatments negatively impacted oxidative stress responses and affected the viability of the mussels after 24 h of recovery. This study showed that exposing juvenile P.canaliculus to a mild stress prior to transport may stimulate protective mechanisms, therefore eliciting a hardening response, but care must be taken to avoid overstressing the mussels. Improving the management of stress during the transport of juvenile mussels may be key to minimising mussel losses and increasing harvest production, and biomarkers associated with oxidative stress/antioxidant metabolism could be valuable tools to ensure emersion hardening does not overstress the mussels and reduce survival. The study presented a powder processing method involving calcination and subsequent carbonation in the synthesis of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) for recycling green mussel shells, which contain a high calcium carbonate content. The purity of portlandite [Ca(OH)2] as a result of calcination and subsequent moisture absorption during storage was verified using the XRD-Rietveld method. Further quantitative XRD Rietveld analysis of the PCC product confirmed the presence of vaterite (55.20 wt.%) and calcite (44.80 wt.%) minerals after carbonation process of the calcined powder product. The SEM examination of this product revealed particle aggregates of non-uniform polyhedral and cubical grains of varying small and large sizes. The FTIR analysis also confirmed that calcination and subsequent hydration of mussel shell powder yielded pure portlandite, whereas the carbonation yielded PCC polymorphism. As a result, this powder processing method is simple to scale and reduces the cost of PCC synthesis, which is critical for practical applications. Many freshwater mussel species require fish hosts for successful reproduction; these relationships can be highly specialized and variable across mussel species. Most mussel host-identification studies have occurred in a laboratory setting and may miss important behavioral and spatial aspects of the mussel-host relationship. As such, conducting in situ evaluations of fish host use by mussel glochidia can provide additional information regarding fish-mussel relationships in the wild. However, in situ mussel-host examinations are rare, and few have been completed along the southern Atlantic slope of the United States. The goal of our study was to examine potential host use and glochidial-release timing in a small stream in South Carolina. Our objectives were to identify fish species used as mussel hosts, examine differences in the prevalence and intensity of infestations among host species, and quantify the effects of water temperature and stream flow on the probability of fish infestation. We examined wild-caught fishes for the presence of glochidial infestations in Sleepy Creek, a small tributary to Stevens Creek in the Savannah River basin of south-central South Carolina. We inspected a total of 822 individual fishes of 14 species and detected glochidia on 92 individuals of 5 fish species. Mean intensity of infestations varied from 7 to 45 glochidia per fish, but intensities did not differ significantly among fish species. Water temperatures and fish total length had significant positive effects on the probability of glochidial infestation. Highest glochidia prevalence occurred toward the end of our study at warmer temperatures and on mid-length fishes. Artificial structures are often used as a tool for habitat restoration and the recreation of degraded coastal ecosystems and their associated food webs. However, it is often unknown if and how these artificial structures may influence the habitat use of target species, thereby hampering restoration goals. In this study, we test how artificial barriers, deployed to enhance the creation of an intertidal mussel bed, influenced the mussel‐habitat use by two bird species under pressure, Eurasian oystercatchers and Eurasian curlews. Average bird presence was monitored using time‐lapse camera's from the start of the mussel bed restoration in August 2018 until April 2019. We found that in the first few months of the experiment, both oystercatchers and curlews avoided the restored mussel beds containing artificial structures in the form of metal barriers that act as traps for dislodged mussels. Thereafter, the presence of barriers had no negative influence on the average presence of oystercatchers or curlews. In fact, curlews were significantly attracted to the mussel beds with barriers in January and February. In addition, we found a negative effect of the presence of European herring gulls on the presence of oystercatchers and curlews. The higher herring gull densities in the first 2 months of the experiment might explain the lower‐than‐expected curlew and oystercatcher densities observed in August. Recruitment failure is a major threat to freshwater mussel (Order Unionida) populations worldwide. Assessments of the recruitment status and determining the bottleneck factors of mussel recruitment are crucial for preventing future declines in mussel populations. In this study, we investigated the recruitment status (i.e., size structure and the proportion of juveniles within a population) of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera laevis in 22 rivers, represented by two reaches at one study site, in eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan. We also quantified the density of the host fish Oncorhynchus masou masou and examined the relationship between the proportion of juveniles and host-fish density to assess host-limitation threats to M. laevis recruitment. Our assessments showed that 13 (59.1%) sites had no signs of recent recruitment within 10 years, with a low mean proportion of juveniles [mean: 0.02 (range 0.00–0.09) fraction], indicating that these populations are threatened by sustained recruitment failure. The proportion of juveniles was positively associated with host-fish density, suggesting that host-fish limitation could be a bottleneck factor for M. laevis recruitment. These results highlight the urgent need for prompt conservation measures, including the enhancement of host-fish availability, to sustain M. laevis populations in the study region. This study is divided into two parts. The first part aims to verify the presence of microplastics in bivalves, namely Perna viridis and Venerupis spp. using microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The second part explores the knowledge, attitude and perception (KAP) of bivalve gleaners on microplastics and plastics. Results of the study confirmed the presence of microplastics in both bivalves, with polyamide fibers being the most common polymer found in the bivalves. The mean size of microplastics found in Perna viridis and Venerupis spp. was 0.25 ± 0.05 mm and 0.33 ± 0.03 mm, respectively. Varying colors and shapes were also observed in both bivalves. Further, results of the KAP showed the lack of knowledge of the gleaners in terms of the basic information about microplastics. Nevertheless, they showed a positive attitude in terms of reducing plastic pollution and perceived coastal waters as important to them. The data on the two parts were used to compute for the estimate of the amount of microplastics that can be transferred to humans through consumption of bivalves, which was found to be 0.003 mg/day. This research paper focused on the monitoring of marine sites using mussels, which are highly valuable organisms in assessing environmental health. However, a significant challenge arises when determining the appropriate size of mussels for monitoring purposes. The objective of this study was to examine the levels of Cd, Pb, As, and Co in three different size classes of two mussel species, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Perna perna, collected from three sites along the Algerian coast, each exhibiting varying degrees of pollution. At each of the study sites, a total of thirty individuals from small, medium, and large size classes of mussels were collected during four different time periods. The mussels were then dissected, and the concentrations of Cd, Pb, As, and Co were measured in the entire flesh of the mussels using ICP-MS. Across the various study sites, the concentrations of cadmium, lead, arsenic, and cobalt ranged from 0.06 to 1.32 mg/kg, 0.09 to 12.56 mg/kg, 4.23 to 18.31 mg/kg, and 0.11 to 1.85 mg/kg, respectively. Interestingly, the distribution of these metals in the three different size classes of mussels followed a consistent pattern at all the study sites. Large mussels exhibited higher concentrations, while small and medium-sized mussels displayed lower levels. The map turtles and sawbacks (Graptemys) sort by female head width into narrow-headed (microcephalic) females of 5 species that eat few mollusks, moderately broad-headed (mesocephalic) females of 4 species that eat moderately high amounts of mollusks, and broad-headed (megacephalic) females of 5 species that eat mollusks almost exclusively. The microcephalic species include a clade of 3 sawbacks, Graptemys nigrinoda, Graptemys flavimaculata, and Graptemys oculifera. The first 2 are sponge specialists, but 2 previous dietary studies of G. oculifera did not report sponges; both also lacked comparisons between the sexes. Both of the other sawbacks also feed on brackish-water mussels near the coast, but this phenomenon has not been examined for G. oculifera. Increased body sizes occur in coastal populations of both other sawbacks as well. We examined G. oculifera diets using fecal samples and found that contrary to the earlier results, they also fed primarily on sponges, as well as insects. Females also consumed algae, Asian clams, and, in a coastal population, mussels. In low-gradient river reaches near the coast, G. oculifera achieved large body sizes compared to populations inhabiting sandbar-dominated inland reaches; they were also large at the confluences of the Pearl River and a tributary creek with the Ross Barnett Reservoir. The fact that G. oculifera at the 2 confluences with a large inland reservoir showed the same trend in body size as they did at the coastal sites suggests that the primary reason for large body size may be thermal stability and/or slowing current that promotes biological production, rather than consumption of brackish-water mussels in coastal populations, as the mussels were absent near the reservoir. In addition, high predation by alligators may also occur at the reservoir confluence and coastal sites and select for large body sizes. Zebra Mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were introduced into the US in the 1980s and have since spread throughout the country with concomitant impacts on aquatic ecosystems. We placed 20 m transects in a variety of sediment types and collected data on sediment size, mussel coverage (the percent of the bottom covered by mussels), and the presence of macrophytes within 0.25 m2 quadrats in White Bear Lake, MN. To assess the degree of Zebra Mussel aggregation, we calculated Morisita's index of dispersion (Iδ) at four levels of spatial scale − 0.25 m2, 1 m2, 4 m2, and 40 m2. Understanding the pattern of aggregation in Zebra Mussels is crucial in detecting early invasions, monitoring populations, and attempting to eradicate them. There was greater Zebra Mussel coverage within quadrats with coarser substrates (gravel/cobble and mixed sediment – including rock and boulders) compared to those with finer substrates (silt and sand). Macrophyte coverage did not significantly influence Zebra Mussel coverage on the lake bed sediments. Spatial scale had a large impact on the measure of mussel aggregation. Zebra Mussels in sand and silt had the highest degree of aggregation and high levels of macrophytes resulted in greater degrees of aggregation on the lake bed sediments. Zebra mussel coverage measured at larger spatial scales generally resulted in lower aggregation values, across both sediment types and levels of macrophyte coverage. The appropriate selection of spatial scale for sampling or observation is critical when upscaling local density to lake populations. Zebra Mussels have spread throughout the US and significantly alter aquatic ecosystems. Zebra mussels are often aggregated on the bottom of aquatic systems and are found preferentially on lake beds with coarser material at the bed (gravel and rock). Using the correct spatial scale to assess mussel coverage is crucial for accurate population estimates. Zebra Mussel infestations might be managed by partial-lake treatment options; however, treatment areas need to be chosen based on Zebra Mussel density and distribution patterns. The Asian Green Lipped mussel, Perna viridis one of the widely distributed bivalves act as a source of low cost protein providing nutritious meal to the coastal population in the form of well balanced amino acids and micronutrients. The immune system produces antibodies to certain class of proteins present in shellfish meat thereby causing hypersensitive reactions in the body. The next generation integrated transcriptome sequencing approach identifies all the potential allergenic proteins expressed in an animal very effectively. The present study describes the transcriptome of P. viridis based on the sequence data generated using five tissues. Transcriptome level candidate allergens and epitopes were observed and identified that might play a role in hypersensitive reaction to shellfish proteins including certain novel candidate allergens like Ran protein and a filamin A like protein. The existence of epitope hotspots in an important protein, arginine kinase was also observed and the unigenes identified would be a valuable resource for conduct of functional studies. The presence of yessotoxins (YTXs) was analyzed in 10,757 samples of Galician bivalves from 2014 to 2022. Only YTX and 45-OH YTX were found. YTX was detected in 31% of the samples, while 45-OH YTX was found in 11.6% of them. Among the samples containing YTX, 45-OH YTX was detected in 37.3% of cases. The maximum recorded levels were 1.4 and 0.16 mg of YTX-equivalentsg−1, for YTX and 45-OH YTX, respectively, which are well below the regulatory limit of the European Union. The YTX and 45-OH YTX toxicities in the raw extracts and extracts subjected to alkaline hydrolysis were strongly and linearly related. Due to the lack of homo-YTX in Galician samples, the effect of alkaline hydrolysis on homo-YTX and 45OH-Homo-YTX was only checked in 23 additional samples, observing no negative effect but a high correlation between raw and hydrolyzed extracts. Hydrolyzed samples can be used instead of raw ones to carry out YTXs determinations in monitoring systems, which may increase the efficiency of those systems where okadaic acid episodes are very frequent and therefore a higher number of hydrolyzed samples are routinely analyzed. The presence of YTX in the studied bivalves varied with the species, with mussels and cockles having the highest percentages of YTX-detected samples. The presence of 45-OH YTX was clearly related to YTX and was detected only in mussels and cockles. Wild populations of mussels contained proportionally more 45-OH YTX than those that were raft-cultured. Spatially, toxin toxicities varied across the sampling area, with higher levels in raft-cultured mussels except those of Ría de Arousa. Ría de Ares (ARE) was the most affected geographical area, although in other northern locations, lower toxin levels were detected. Seasonally, YTX and 45-OH YTX toxicities showed similar patterns, with higher levels in late summer and autumn but lower toxicities of the 45-OH toxin in August. The relationship between the two toxins also varied seasonally, in general with a minimum proportion of 45-OH YTX in July–August but with different maximum levels for raft-cultured and wild mussel populations. Interannually, the average toxicities of YTX decreased from 2014 to 2017 and newly increased from 2018 to 2021, but decreased slightly in 2022. Zebra (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, 1771) and quagga (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis Andrusov, 1897) mussels are important pests in North America and Europe, where they cause costly economic damage to water infrastructure and severe environmental impacts to lake ecosystems. Strategies for combating these invasive mussels do not differentiate between the species, and little is known about how they may differ in terms of their susceptibility to chemical control methods. In this study, adult zebra and quagga mussels were collected from Lake Ontario and exposed to three different concentrations of EarthTec QZ - 60, 120, and 180 µg/L as liquid ionic copper - until 100% mortality was reached. Quagga mussels died significantly faster and at lower doses of copper ion than zebra mussels. Dry tissue collected from the mollusks at the time of death was analyzed for the copper concentration in each species and results revealed that zebra mussels accumulated and were able to tolerate much higher concentrations of copper in their tissues than quagga mussels. After 10 days' exposure to the highest dose rate (180 µg/L) zebra mussels had experienced less than 20% mortality while accumulating more than 1,000 mg/kg copper, whereas the quagga mussels treated at the same 180 ug/L suffered 100% mortality after 10 days despite having accumulated only 300 mg/kg of copper. While more research is needed to explain the precise mechanisms whereby zebra mussels are able to tolerate the much higher bodily concentrations of copper than quagga mussels, these results have direct management implications when copper is used for dreissenid control. Quagga and zebra mussels of the genus Dreissena are two of the most impactful freshwater invasive alien species that have spread widely across the globe. These species attach to natural and artificial substrates, form dense populations and filter large volumes of water causing ecological and economic damage. Following the quagga mussel's discovery in the Shannon River system in Ireland, this study assesses its local distribution, population density, relative abundance, and population structure in the interconnected lakes Lough Ree and Lough Derg in order to determine the likely year and location of its introduction. Polymodal length-frequency analysis was used to distinguish between year cohorts and estimate growth rates. The quagga mussel is established widely across both lakes and is settling on a range of artificial surfaces, natural substrates, dead shells, plant material, and other invasive bivalves. High densities of quagga mussels exceeding 20 000 individuals per m2 were present on artificial surfaces in Lough Ree with total dreissenid densities reaching 26 758 per m2. The relative abundance of quagga mussels to zebra mussels on natural substrates is high in Lough Ree (up to 94.7%) and low in Lough Derg (up to 16.8%). Two to four year cohorts were present at all sites, with quagga mussels attaining large shell sizes over 34 mm in length. Growth varied between sites with a maximum estimated yearly growth rate of 16.8 mm. The time and place of the quagga mussel's initial introduction in Ireland is still uncertain, but its widespread distribution, population structure, and high population density and relative abundance suggest it was first introduced to Lough Ree in 2016 or 2017. Prevention of non-native species introductions and establishment is essential to avoid adverse impacts of invasive species in marine environments. To identify potential new invasive species and inform non-native species management options for the northern Gulf of Mexico (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas), 138 marine species were risk screened for current and future climate conditions using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit. Species were risk-ranked as low, medium, high, and very high risk based on separate (calibrated) thresholds for fishes, tunicates, and invertebrates. In the basic screening, 15 fishes, two tunicates, and 26 invertebrates were classi- fied as high or very high risk under current climate conditions. Whereas, under future climate conditions, 16 fishes, three tunicates, and 33 invertebrates were classified as high or very high risk. Very high risk species included: California scorpionfish Scorpaena guttata, red scorpionfish Scorpaena scrofa, purple whelk Rapana venosa, and Santo Domingo false mussel Mytilopsis sallei under both current and future climates, with weedy scorpionfish Rhinopias frondosa, Papuan scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis papuensis, daggertooth pike conger Muraenesox cinereus, yellowfin scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis neglecta, tassled scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis oxycephalus, brush-clawed shore crab Hemigrapsus takanoi, honeycomb oyster Hyotissa hyotis, carinate rock shell Indothais lacera, and Asian green mussel Perna viridis under climate change conditions only. Multiple stressors can affect populations interactively. However, the process by which they affect recruitment remains unclear, especially in long‐lived organisms with complex life cycles.This study explored the bottleneck stages of juvenile recruitment in the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera togakushiensis and the interactive effects of nutrients and fine sediments on these stages. The proportion of M. togakushiensis juveniles aged ≤10 years was investigated in 24 rivers from north‐eastern Japan. Margaritifera togakushiensis has a complex life cycle with an obligate parasitic larval stage. Gravid female density, glochidia density (the number of glochidial infections per stream area), and juvenile survival rate, used as indices for adult, parasitic, and post‐parasitic juvenile stages, respectively, were obtained from 11 of these rivers.Twenty‐four population status assessments showed that the proportion of juveniles aged ≤10 years ranged from 0.00 to 0.23, and that they were absent in 12 rivers. Parasitic and post‐parasitic juvenile stages were bottlenecks for recruitment; juvenile survival rates had a stronger positive effect on recruitment in rivers with high glochidia density. Juvenile survival rate was negatively associated with the synergistic effects of nutrients and fine sediments, although factors limiting glochidia density were not identified.These findings suggest that the interaction between nutrients and fine sediments can synergistically reduce the recruitment of M. togakushiensis, indicating an underestimated impact of stressors on mussel recruitment if treated individually. Future mitigation measures should consider both nutrient levels and fine sediments to restore mussel recruitment. The ability of marine organisms to persist under, and recover from, periods of stressful conditions will shape their occurrence in future oceans characterized by exacerbated marine heatwaves (MHWs). Organism persistence and recovery may, in turn, be shaped by traits of the organisms themselves including, for example, body size. In the present study, we tested the responses (survival, heart rate, Arrhenius breakpoint temperature – ABT, clearance rate, respiration rate, and condition index) of large (5 cm) and small (3 cm) Perna viridis mussels after exposure to a three-week marine heatwave (MHW; + 4 °C) and a one-week recovery period. Exposure to elevated temperatures did not affect the survival of large or small mussels, however, at the end of the MHW both size classes exhibited increased heart rate under elevated temperatures, small mussels exhibited increased ABT, and large mussels exhibited significantly increased clearance rate. Following one week of recovery at control temperature, the altered responses had returned to be similar to those of mussels held under control conditions. The results obtained here indicate that both sizes of mussels can readily recover from exposure to short-term elevated temperatures imposed by MHWs, enabling the continued persistence of P. viridis mussels in future oceans. We have shown in the past decade, for the first time in a bivalve mollusc, detection, isolation, and purification of β-1,3 glucan binding protein (β-GBP) in the plasma of the marine mussel Perna viridis and demonstrated its role in a nonself-induced activation of plasma prophenoloxidase system. In this study, we present evidence for its ability to function as an opsonin during phagocytosis of trypsinized yeast cells by the hemocytes of P. viridis. The in vitro pretreatment of target cells (trypsinized yeast cells) with β-GBP enhanced the phagocytic response of hemocytes. Such β-GBP-mediated enhanced phagocytic response appeared to be dose dependent. This opsono-phagocytic response could be inhibited by the presence of laminarin (a polymer of β-1,3 glucans), glucose, as well as polyclonal antibodies raised against β-GBP. These observations clearly indicate that the plasma β-GBP can possibly recognize and bind to β-1,3 glucans on the surface of targets and facilitate hemocyte recognition processes possibly by forming a bridge between the hemocytes and the target, consequently leading to opsono-phagocytosis. Most species arriving from a donor to a recipient area do not succeed in establishing long-lasting self-sustaining populations. However, successful introductions are far better documented than those that failed, especially those occurring before or near the advent of the Linnaean binomial nomenclature. We report here an introduction from the mid-18th century (possibly in 1750 or 1751) of an exotic mussel transported as fouling on ship hulls from the western coast of Morocco (Atlantic Ocean) to the port of Marseilles (Mediterranean Sea). The exotic mussel, which survived several years, has been identified as probably being the brown mussel, Perna perna, a species with warm-water affinities, which much later became invasive in several areas of the world ocean. The documents of the 18th and early 19th century, which mentioned the event, held 'the curious' and 'amateurs', who harvested the mussels, responsible for its extirpation. More realistically, it is hypothesised that the mussel population did not survive the return of severe cold weather conditions, after a few relatively mild decades, in the context of the Little Ice Age (LIA). In the present study, 334 samples of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) harvested along the coasts of the Central Adriatic Sea during the years 2020–2021 were analyzed for the presence of lipophilic marine biotoxins according to the European Harmonized Standard Operating Procedure. The results showed that 74 (22%) and 84 (25%) samples were positive to okadaic acid and yessotoxin groups, respectively. Among them, only 11 (3.3%) samples resulted as non‐compliant, as they exceeded the maximum limits (160 μg okadaic acid equivalent/kg) established by the Regulation (EC) 853/2004. The method applied in this study was able to detect and quantify lipophilic marine biotoxins concentrations, in order to monitor their presence in molluscs and avoid the risk of consumer exposure. Toxoplasmosis, caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, is one of the main food-, water- and soil-borne zoonotic disease worldwide. Over the past 20 years many papers were published on the transmission of T. gondii by marine animals, including mollusks, which can concentrate the oocysts and release them. Sporulated oocysts may remain viable and infective for 18 months in seawater. Therefore, raw or undercooked bivalve mollusks pose a risk to humans. This study aimed to apply and validate for the first time a very sensitive digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) protocol to detect and quantify T. gondii DNA in mussels. Four concentration levels: 8000 genomic copies (gc)/μL, 800 gc/μL, 80 gc/μL, 8 gc/μL of a T. gondii reference DNA were tested. DNA was extracted from 80 pools of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Forty pools were contaminated with T. gondii reference DNA and used as positive controls, while 40 pools were used as negative controls. DdPCR reaction was prepared using a protocol, previously developed by the authors, for detection of T. gondii in meat. Amplification was obtained up 8 gc/μL. All infected replicates resulted positive, as well as no droplets were detected in negative controls. The droplets produced in the reaction ranged from 8,828 to 14,075 (average 12,627 droplets). The sensitivity and specificity of ddPCR were 100% (95%CI = 94.3-99.9). In addition, 100 pools of mussels collected in the Gulf of Naples were used to validate the protocol. Of these 16% were positive (95% CI = 9.7-25.0) for T. gondii. Samples were also tested by real-time PCR and no positive samples were found. Data obtained from ddPCR showed good identification of negative and positive samples with higher specificity and efficiency than real-time PCR. This tool could be very useful for a rapid sensitive detection of low DNA concentrations of T. gondii in mussels, reducing the risk of toxoplasmosis in humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
