Denopelopia amicitia Dantas, Hamada & Mendes was described based on the male and pupae collected in the Brazilian Amazon. Here we describe and illustrate the female and larva of this species. At both stages, D. amicitia is similar to Denopelopia atria Roback & Rutter, which is the only species in the genus with all life stages known until now. Em ambos os estágios, D. amicitia é similar à Denopelopia atria Roback & Rutter, que é a única espécie do gênero com todos os estágios de vida conhecidos até agora.

Abalesmyia cordeiroi Neubern was originally described based on adult males collected in the Amazon region; therefore, females and immatures of this species are unknown. In the present study, the pupal and larval stages of A. cordeiroi are described and illustrated. In addition, an amendment to the larval diagnosis of Ablabesmyia is provided. RESUMO Ablabesmyia cordeiroi Neubern foi descrita originalmente com base em machos coletados na região amazônica, portanto, a fêmea e os imaturos desta espécie são desconhecidos. No presente estudo, os estágios de pupa e larva de A. cordeiroi são descritos e ilustrados. Além disso, uma emenda à diagnose da larva de Ablabesmyia é fornecida.

The monotypic genus Pentaneurella Fittkau & Murray was originally described based on larvae, pupal exuviae and pharate males. The latter prevented the observation of key features, such as wing dimensions, abdominal coloration pattern, and hypopygial apodemes (sternapodeme and phallapodeme), and the description of the adult male was considered incomplete by the authors. Herein, the adult female of Pentaneurella katterjokki is described for the first time, and the adult male, pupa and larva are redescribed and figured based on specimens recently collected in Germany and Norway. We also discuss the phylogenetic position of Pentaneurella.

A new species of Parapentaneura Stur, Fittkau et Serrano 2006 (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae) breeding on phytotelmata of the bromeliad Aechmea distichantha Lemaire in northwestern of argentinean “Yungas” is described and adults and immatures are figured. The first formal description of a Parapentaneura female adult is conducted. Information about bionomics and distribution of the new species is provided. Notes about morphology traits of phytotelm pupae of Tanypodinae are presented. These pupae tend to have thoracic horns relatively long, non-globose, corona absent and the atrium not or slightly lobulated. The phylogenetic relationship between the genera Parapentaneura, Pentaneura Philippi and Hudsonimyia Roback is tested in a phylogenetic analysis in the context of the cladistic setting of Tanypodinae recently proposed and, characters are analyzed and discussed. Mitochondrial DNA sequences from cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) were used to provide a phylogeny of the Chironomidae (Diptera) from Turkey. Data were obtained from 70 species of Chironomidae belonging to the genera Ablabesmyia, Chironomus, Cladotanytarsus, Conchapelopia, Cricotopus, Cryptochironomus, Dicrotendipes, Endochironomus, Eukiefferiella, Kiefferulus, Macropelopia, Micropsectra, Microtendipes, Paracladopelma, Paracricotopus, Paratanytarsus, Paratendipes, Paratrichocladius, Polypedilum, Psectrocladius, Psectrotanypus, Rheocricotopus, Tanytarsus, Thienemannimyia, Virgatanytarsus and Zavrelimyia. Neighbour-joining (NJ) and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses were used to identify the relationships among species. We confirmed monophyly of all sampled subfamilies and also tribes Chironomini, Tanytarsini, Macropelopiini and Pentaneurini, with the exception of subfamily Tanypodinae in ML analysis. However, in Chironomini, genus Chironomus, Cryptochironomus, Endochironomus and Paratendipes were monophyletic, while Polypedilum was not. Likewise, in Tanytarsini, genus Paratanytarsus and Cladotanytarsus were monophyletic, while Tanytarsus and Micropsectra were not. Also, in Macropelopiini and Pentaneurini, genus Macropelopia and Zavrelimyia were monophyletic. However, Ablabesmyia, genus of Pentaneurini, formed monophyletic group only in NJ analysis. In this study, we determined an unexpected inclusion of a Tanytarsus brundini individual into Micropsectra group. Five new species of Monopelopia from Brazil are described and illustrated, four of which are based on all life stages and one on adult male and pupa. The immature stages of Monopelopia edentata sp. nov. were collected in bromeliad phytotelmata, while the other species were collected associated with aquatic vegetation. New records for M. boliekae Beck & Beck and M. caraguata Mendes, Marcondes & Pinho are provided, as well as updated identification keys for males and immatures of the Nearctic and Neotropical Monopelopia species.

The pupae and adults of Trissopelopia bifurcata sp. n. are recorded and described from the Darjeeling Himalayas of India. The genus is recorded for the first time in India. A new key to the world species of Trissopelopia is also included.

A new species of Denopelopia from Brazil is described based on adult male and pupa. The male of the new species can be distinguished from all other species of the genus by the genitalia and fore-tibial spur morphology. The pupa is very similar to those of D. atria, but it can be distinguished by the absence of distinct constrictions in the respiratory atrium of the thoracic horn. Phytotelmata are structures present in terrestrial plants such as modified leaves, leafaxils, flowers, stem holes or depressions, open fruits and fallen leaves. These structures allow water to impound and are more common in tropical areas where plant diversity and rainfall are higher (Fish 1983). The phytotelmata provide a suitable habitat where immature chironomids are common inhabitants. In this contribution, the occurrence of the chironomid species Monopelopia caraguata Mendes et al. A new species of the monotypic genus Metapelopia is described and illustrated based on all life stages. Adults of the Metapelopia peruensis sp. n. can be easily distinguished from those of M. corbii by the color pattern of the legs and abdomen. Larvae and pupae were collected associated with algae accumulated on rocks.

The immature stages of Labrundinia tenata Roback, 1987 (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae) are de- scribed and illustrated and the male is redescribed. Larvae were collected in aquatic systems in southeastern Brazil, where they are associated with aquatic macrophytes. The three semaphoronts of L. tenata are recognized: (a) Male by the abdominal segments I pale brown, II-VI with brown transverse band along proximal margin, VII, VIII almost wholly brown; hypopygium brown; anterior margin of sternapodeme rounded, no distinct spur. (b) Pupa by the thoracic horn S-shaped and a shallow preapical groove; abdominal segment VII with two lateral setae. (c) Larva with posteroventral spine group; posterior parapod with single elongate claw serrated on inner margin and numerous simple claws.

A new genus, Amazonimyia, is established for a species of the tribe Pentaneurini (Diptera, Chironomidae, Tanypodinae) from the Amazon Rainforest in northern Brazil. Generic diagnoses for adult male and pupa are provided together with descriptions of a new species, Amazonimyia gigantea.

The species of the genus Labrundinia (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanypodinae: Pentaneurini) are revised, described and figured. Keys to known adult males, pupae and larvae are provided. Fourteen previously known species are redescribed, and 25 species from Neotropical region are diagnosed and described as new to science. These species treated are L. amandae sp. n., L. amazonica sp. n., L. becki Beck et Beck, L. carolae sp. n., L. costaricae sp. n., L. fera Roback, L. fiorelinii sp. n., L. fittkaui sp. n., L. fosteri Roback, L. hirsuta Roback, L. gregi sp. n., L. jasoni sp. n., L. johannseni Beck et Beck, L. kogilamae sp. n., L. longipalpis Goetghebuer, L. mayaca sp. n., L. meta Roback, L. multidentata sp. n., L. nathani sp. n., L. neopilosella Beck et Beck, L. nicaraguensis sp. n., L. opela Roback, L. panamensis sp. n., L. parabecki Roback, L. parafittkaui sp. n., L. parareniformis sp. n., L. paravirescens sp. n., L. paulae sp. n., L. pilosella Loew, L. reniformis sp. n., L. robacki sp. n., L. semicurvata sp. n., L. setosa sp. n., L. separata Edwards, L. sofiae sp. n., L. tenata Roback, L. trilucida sp. n., L. unicolor sp. n., L. virescens Beck et Beck. A diagnosis of the genus is presented and morphological differences to closely related genera are discussed.

This preliminary report on a revision of the Tanypodinae of Africa south of the Sahara is based mainly on the collection of imagines in the British Museum (Natural History). It has been possible to re-examine most known species, in addition to studying new species, and to classify them according to the scheme proposed by E. J. Fittkau. Most species fit into his genera but a few new ones will have to be erected. The distribution of species is discussed.
