A comprehensive study of the electronic and structural phase transition from 1T` to Td in the bulk Weyl semimetal Mo1-xWxTe2 at different doping concentrations has been carried out using time-of-flight momentum microscopy (including circular and linear dichroism), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy, transport measurements, density functional theory (DFT) and Kikuchi pattern calculations. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) at 20 K reveals surface electronic states, which are indicative of topological Fermi arcs. Their dispersion agrees with the position of Weyl points predicted by DFT calculations based on the experimental crystal structure of our samples determined by XRD. Raman spectroscopy confirms the inversion symmetry breaking for the Td -phase, which is a necessary condition for the emergence of topological states. Transport measurements show that increasing the doping concentration from 2 to 9% leads to an increase in the temperature of the phase transition from 1T` to Td from 230 K to 270 K. Magnetoresistance and longitudinal elastoresistance show significantly increased values in the Td -phase due to stimulated inter-pocket electron backscattering. Hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the momentum-resolved band structure in an epitaxial Mn2Au(001) film capped by a 2 nm thick ferromagnetic Permalloy layer. By magnetizing the Permalloy capping layer, the exceptionally strong exchange bias aligns the Neel vector in the Mn2Au(001) film accordingly. Uncompensated interface Mn magnetic moments in Mn2Au were identified as the origin of the exchange bias using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism in combination with photoelectron emission microscopy. Using time-of-flight momentum microscopy, we measure the asymmetry of the band structure in Mn2Au resulting from the homogeneous orientation of the Neel vector. Comparison with theory shows that the Neel vector, determined by the magnetic moment of the top Mn layer, is antiparallel to the Permalloy magnetization. The experimental results demonstrate that hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy can measure the band structure of epitaxial layers beneath a metallic capping layer and corroborate the asymmetric band structure in Mn2Au that was previously inferred only indirectly., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the electronic structure of a novel Kondo lattice system CeCuX2 (X = As/Sb) employing high resolution depth-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of high quality single crystalline materials. CeCuSb2 and CeCuAs2 represent different regimes of the Doniach phase diagram exhibiting Kondo-like transport properties and CeCuSb2 is antiferromagnetic (TN ~ 6.9 K) while CeCuAs$_2$ does not show long-range magnetic order down to the lowest temperature studied. In this study, samples were cleaved in ultrahigh vacuum before the photoemission measurements and the spectra at different surface sensitivity establish the pnictogen layer having squarenet structure as the terminated surface which is weakly bound to the other layers. Cu 2p and As 2p spectra show spin-orbit split sharp peaks along with features due to plasmon excitations. Ce 3d spectra exhibit multiple features due to the hybridization of the Ce 4f/5d states with the valence states. While overall lineshape of the bulk spectral functions look similar in both the cases, the surface spectra are very different; the surface-bulk difference is significantly weaker in CeCuAs2 compared to that observed in CeCuSb2. A distinct low binding energy peak is observed in the Ce 3d spectra akin to the scenario observed in cuprates and manganites due to the Zhang-Rice singlets and/or high degree of itineracy of the conduction holes. The valence band spectra of CeCuSb$_2$ manifest highly metallic phase. In CeCuAs2, intensity at the Fermi level is significantly small suggesting a pseudogap-type behavior. These results bring out an interesting scenario emphasizing the importance and subtlety of hybridization physics underlying the exoticity of this novel Kondo system.

We investigate the electronic structure of an antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice system CeAgAs2 employing hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. CeAgAs2, an orthorhombic variant of HfCuSi2 structure, exhibits antiferromagnetic ground state, Kondo like resistivity upturn and compensation of magnetic moments at low temperatures. The photoemission spectra obtained at different photon energies suggest termination of the cleaved surface at cis-trans-As layers. The depth-resolved data show significant surface-bulk differences in the As and Ce core level spectra. The As 2p bulk spectrum shows distinct two peaks corresponding to two different As layers. The peak at higher binding energy correspond to cis-trans-As layers and is weakly hybridized with the adjacent Ce layers. The As layers between Ce and Ag-layers possess close to trivalent configuration due to strong hybridization with the neighboring atoms and the corresponding feature appear at lower binding energy. Ce 3d core level spectra show multiple features reflecting strong Ce-As hybridization and strong correlation. Intense f0 peak is observed in the surface spectrum while it is insignificant in the bulk. In addition, we observe a features at binding energy lower than the well-screened feature indicating the presence of additional interactions. This feature becomes more intense in the bulk spectra suggesting it to be a bulk property. Increase in temperature leads to a spectral weight transfer to higher binding energies in the core level spectra and a depletion of spectral intensity at the Fermi level as expected in a Kondo material. These results reveal interesting surface-bulk differences, complex interplay of intra- and inter-layer covalency, and electron correlation in the electronic structure of this novel Kondo lattice system.

The recent realizations of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ benchmark the (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ family as a promising hotbed for further QAHE improvements. The family owes its potential to its ferromagnetically (FM) ordered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ septuple layers (SL). However, the QAHE realization is complicated in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ due to the substantial antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the SL. An FM state, advantageous for the QAHE, can be stabilized by interlacing the SL with an increasing number $n$ of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. However, the mechanisms driving the FM state and the number of necessary QLs are not understood, and the surface magnetism remains obscure. Here, we demonstrate robust FM properties in MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ ($n = 2$) with $T_C \approx 12$ K and establish their origin in the Mn/Bi intermixing phenomenon by a combined experimental and theoretical study. Our measurements reveal a magnetically intact surface with a large magnetic moment, and with FM properties similar to the bulk. Our investigation thus consolidates the MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ system as perspective for the QAHE at elevated temperatures.

Bulk EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ show a temperature-driven valence transisition of europium from $\sim$+2 above 200 K to $\sim$+3 below 100 K, which is correlated with a shrinking by approximatly 2 % of the crystal lattice along the two a-axes. Due to this interconnection between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom the influence of strain in epitaxial thin films is particularly interesting. Ambient X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms an epitaxial relationship of tetragonal EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ on MgO(001) with an out-of plane c-axis orientation for the thin film, whereby the a-axes of both lattices align. XRD at low temperatures reveals a strong coupling of the thin film lattice to the substrate, showing no abrupt compression over the temperature range from 300 to 10 K. Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at 300 and 20 K reveals a temperature-independent valence of +2.0 for Eu. The evolving biaxial tensile strain upon cooling is suggested to suppress the valence transition. Instead low temperature transport measurements of the resistivity and the Hall effect in a magnetic field up to 5 T point to a film thickness independent phase transition at 16-20 K, indicating magnetic ordering.

Rare earth ions typically exhibit larger magnetic moments than transition metal ions and thus promise the opening of a wider exchange gap in the Dirac surface states of topological insulators. Yet, in a recent photoemission study of Eu-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ films, the spectra remained gapless down to $T = 20\;\text{K}$. Here, we scrutinize whether the conditions for a substantial gap formation in this system are present by combining spectroscopic and bulk characterization methods with theoretical calculations. For all studied Eu doping concentrations, our atomic multiplet analysis of the $M_{4,5}$ x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra reveals a Eu$^{2+}$ valence and confirms a large magnetic moment, consistent with a $4f^7 \; {^8}S_{7/2}$ ground state. At temperatures below $10\;\text{K}$, bulk magnetometry indicates the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. This is in good agreement with density functional theory, which predicts AFM interactions between the Eu impurities. Our results support the notion that antiferromagnetism can coexist with topological surface states in rare-earth doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and call for spectroscopic studies in the kelvin range to look for novel quantum phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the surface electronic structure of the magnetic van der Waals compounds MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, the $n=$~1 and 2 members of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series, which have attracted recent interest as intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Combining circular dichroic, spin-resolved and photon-energy-dependent ARPES measurements with calculations based on density functional theory, we unveil complex momentum-dependent orbital and spin textures in the surface electronic structure and disentangle topological from trivial surface bands. We find that the Dirac-cone dispersion of the topologial surface state is strongly perturbed by hybridization with valence-band states for Bi$_2$Te$_3$-terminated surfaces but remains preserved for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-terminated surfaces. Our results firmly establish the topologically non-trivial nature of these magnetic van der Waals materials and indicate that the possibility of realizing a quantized anomalous Hall conductivity depends on surface termination.

Since the discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the magnetically doped topological insulators (MTI) Cr:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ and V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$, the search for the exchange coupling mechanisms underlying the onset of ferromagnetism has been a central issue, and a variety of different scenarios have been put forward. By combining resonant photoemission, X-ray magnetic dichroism and multiplet ligand field theory, we determine the local electronic and magnetic configurations of V and Cr impurities in (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$. While strong pd hybridisation is found for both dopant types, their 3d densities of states show pronounced differences. State-of-the-art first-principles calculations show how these impurity states mediate characteristic short-range pd exchange interactions, whose strength sensitively varies with the position of the 3d states relative to the Fermi level. Measurements on films with varying host stoichiometry support this trend. Our results establish the essential role of impurity-state mediated exchange interactions in the magnetism of MTI.

We use time-resolved momentum microscopy at a free-electron laser (FEL) and extend orbital tomography into the time domain to image the electronic wave functions of excited molecular orbitals. This technique provides unprecedented insight into the ultrafast interplay between structural and electronic dynamics. In this work we prove general applicability and establish the experimental conditions at FEL sources to minimize space charge effects and radiation damage. We investigate a bilayer pentacene film on Ag(110) by optical laser pump and FEL probe experiments. From the momentum microscopy signal, we obtain time-dependent momentum maps of the excited-state dynamics of both pentacene layers separately. Combining experimental observations with a theoretical study, we interpret the observed signal for the bottom layer as resulting from the charge redistribution between the molecule and the substrate induced by excitation. Combinations of non-trivial band topology and long-range magnetic order hold promise for realizations of novel spintronic phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the topological magnetoelectric effect. Following theoretical advances material candidates are emerging. Yet, a compound with a band-inverted electronic structure and an intrinsic net magnetization remains unrealized. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is a candidate for the first antiferromagnetic topological insulator and the progenitor of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series. For $n$ = 1, we confirm a non-stoichiometric composition proximate to MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and establish an antiferromagnetic state below 13 K followed by a state with net magnetization and ferromagnetic-like hysteresis below 5 K. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments and density-functional calculations reveal a topological surface state on the MnBi$_4$Te$_7$(0001) surface, analogous to the non-magnetic parent compound Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Our results render MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ as a band-inverted material with an intrinsic net magnetization and a complex magnetic phase diagram providing a versatile platform for the realization of different topological phases., Comment: Accepted to Phys. The layered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has been predicted to combine the band ordering of archetypical topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Te$_3$ with the magnetism of Mn, making this material a viable candidate for the realization of various magnetic topological states. We have systematically investigated the surface electronic structure of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$(0001) single crystals by use of spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In line with theoretical predictions, the results reveal a surface state in the bulk band gap and they provide evidence for the influence of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling on the surface electronic structure., Comment: Revised version

Crystal growth of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ has delivered the first experimental corroboration of the 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator state. Our present results confirm that the synthesis of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ can be scaled-up and strengthen it as a promising experimental platform for studies of a crossover between magnetic ordering and non-trivial topology. High-quality single crystals of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ are grown by slow cooling within a narrow range between the melting points of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ (586 {\deg}C) and MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ (600 {\deg}C). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy reveal ubiquitous antisite defects in both cation sites and, possibly, Mn vacancies. Powders of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ can be obtained at subsolidus temperatures, and a complementary thermochemical study establishes a limited high-temperature range of phase stability. Nevertheless, quenched powders are stable at room temperature and exhibit long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 24 K. The expected Mn(II) out-of-plane magnetic state is confirmed by the magnetization, X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption and linear dichroism data. MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ exhibits a metallic type of resistivity in the range 4.5-300 K. The compound is an n-type conductor that reaches a thermoelectric figure of merit up to ZT = 0.17. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments provide evidence for a surface state forming a gapped Dirac cone.

Despite immense advances in the field of topological materials, the antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFMTI) state, predicted in 2010, has been resisting experimental observation up to now. Here, using density functional theory and Monte Carlo method we predict and by means of structural, transport, magnetic, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements confirm for the first time realization of the AFMTI phase, that is hosted by the van der Waals layered compound MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. An interlayer AFM ordering makes MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ invariant with respect to the combination of the time-reversal ($\Theta$) and primitive-lattice translation ($T_{1/2}$) symmetries, $S=\Theta T_{1/2}$, which gives rise to the $Z_2$ topological classification of AFM insulators, $Z_2$ being equal to 1 for this material. The $S$-breaking (0001) surface of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ features a giant bandgap in the topological surface state thus representing an ideal platform for the observation of such long-sought phenomena as the quantized magnetoelectric coupling and intrinsic axion insulator state.

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has recently been reported to emerge in magnetically-doped topological insulators. Although its general phenomenology is well established, the microscopic origin is far from being properly understood and controlled. Here we report on a detailed and systematic investigation of transition-metal (TM)-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with complementary experimental techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), resonant photoemission (resPES), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we provide a complete spectroscopic characterization of both electronic and magnetic properties. Our results reveal that the TM dopants not only affect the magnetic state of the host material, but also significantly alter the electronic structure by generating impurity-derived energy bands. Our findings demonstrate the existence of a delicate interplay between electronic and magnetic properties in TM-doped TIs. In particular, we find that the fate of the topological surface states critically depends on the specific character of the TM impurity: while V- and Fe-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ display resonant impurity states in the vicinity of the Dirac point, Cr and Mn impurities leave the energy gap unaffected. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy energy and easy axis, which control the magnetic gap opening and its stability, are also found to be strongly TM impurity-dependent and can vary from in-plane to out-of-plane depending on the impurity and its distance from the surface. Overall, our results provide general guidelines for the realization of a robust QAHE in TM-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ in the ferromagnetic state., Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures

The ferromagnetic topological insulator V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ has been recently reported as a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) system. Yet the microscopic origins of the QAH effect and the ferromagnetism remain unclear. One key aspect is the contribution of the V atoms to the electronic structure. Here the valence band of V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films was probed in an element-specific way by resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The signature of the V $3d$ impurity band was extracted, and exhibits a high density of states near Fermi level. First-principles calculations support the experimental results and indicate the coexistence of ferromagnetic superexchange and double exchange interactions. Samarium hexaboride (SmB6), which lies in the mixed valence regime in the Anderson model, has been predicted to possess topologically protected surface states. The intensive investigations on SmB6 have brought up the long standing questions about the discrepancy between the surface and bulk electronic properties in rare-earth compounds in general. Here, we investigate and eventually clarify this discrepancy in the particular case of SmB6 by the photoemission core-level spectra. We focus on the change in both Sm and B states depending on time, temperature, probing depth, and surface termination on the cleaved (100) surface. Our spectra show that the unusual time-dependent change in the Sm valence occurs within a period of hours, which is not related to the adsorption of residual gases. Moreover, we observe a reduction of the surface feature in the B and Sm states on the same timescale accompanied by the formation of a subsurface region. Thus, it indicates the relatively slow charge redistribution between the surface and subsurface regions. A comprehensive understanding of spin-polarized photoemission is crucial for accessing the electronic structure of spin-orbit coupled materials. Yet, the impact of the final state in the photoemission process on the photoelectron spin has been difficult to assess in these systems. We present experiments for the spin-orbit split states in a Bi-Ag surface alloy showing that the alteration of the final state with energy may cause a complete reversal of the photoelectron spin polarization. We explain the effect on the basis of ab initio one-step photoemission theory and describe how it originates from linear dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons. Our analysis shows that the modulated photoelectron spin polarization reflects the intrinsic spin density of the surface state being sampled differently depending on the final state, and it indicates linear dichroism as a natural probe of spin-orbit coupling at surfaces., Comment: New manuscript with a changed interpretation and theoretical description of the experimental results

We take up the issue of deriving the limit as $n\to\infty$ of the GREM-like K process on a tree with $n$ levels. Under specific conditions on the parameters of the process, implying the martingality of a modification of the underlying clock process sequences, we obtain infinite level clock processes as nontrivial limits of the finite level clocks, and use them to construct a process on a suitable product space which is then shown to be the limit of the $n$ level K processes as $n\to\infty$. We study the geometry of fanning curves in the Grassmann manifold of n-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^{kn}$; we construct a complete system of invariants which solve the congruence problem. The geometry of the invariants themselves and their relation with classical invariants is also studied.
