1. Adaptive fabric with emissivity regulation for thermal management of humans

Abstract

The heat generation of the human body dramatically varies between resting and active status, so dynamic heat dissipation is required to ensure optimal thermal comfort. Herein, we propose a spectrally self-adaptive smart fabric (SSSF) by covering polyester fabric with silver nanowires, which autonomously adjusts its emissivity in response to the body’s movement status from dry to wet states. During periods of inactivity, the SSSF maintains radiative heat insulation with a low emissivity state of 0.39. Conversely, during vigorous physical activity, its emissivity is improved to 0.83 when the sweat penetrates the SSSF, facilitating greater heat dissipation. Comparative experiments demonstrate the superior thermal management capabilities of the SSSF, with a 19.5 % reduction in heat dissipation power relative to traditional fabrics when in the low emissivity mode, and an impressive 67.6 % enhancement in heat dissipation power as it changes from low to high emissivity mode. This work provides an adaptive approach to emissivity modulation, offering an effective solution for dynamic heat dissipation of humans across various states of activity, thereby enhancing personal thermal comfort.

2. Superhydrophobic bilayer coating for passive daytime radiative cooling

Abstract

Passive radiative cooling is an energy-free cooling method by exchanging thermal radiation with the cold universe through the transparent atmospheric window. Spectrum tailoring of the radiative cooler is the key to daytime radiative cooling in previously reported works. In addition, radiative coolers with large-scale fabrication and self-cleaning characteristics should be further developed to improve their industrial applicability. Herein, we propose a bilayer radiative cooling coating with the superhydrophobic property and a scalable process, by covering TiO2/acrylic resin paint with a silica/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (SiO2/P(VdF-HFP)) composite masking layer. The strong Mie scattering in TiO2/acrylic resin paint contributes to high solar reflection, while the SiO2/P(VdF-HFP) masking layer is responsible for superhydrophobicity and synergetic solar reflection in the ultraviolet band, resulting in an effective solar reflectivity of 94.0 % with an average emissivity of 97.1 % and superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 158.9°. Moreover, the as-fabricated coating can be cooled to nearly 5.8 °C below the temperature of commercial white paint and 2.7 °C below the local ambient temperature under average solar irradiance of over 700 W m−2. In addition, yearly energy saving of 29.0 %–55.9 % can be achieved after the coating is applied to buildings in Phoenix, Hong Kong, Singapore, Guangzhou, and Riyadh.

4. Impact of Chinese College Students' Professional Identity on Their Academic Achievement: Career Maturity as a Mediator

Abstract

This study investigated college students' career maturity as a mediator of the effect of professional identity on academic achievement. The researchers developed a structural equation model and a research hypothesis using the Chinese college students' professional identity scale, career maturity scale, and academic achievement scale. After experts' revision and confirmatory analysis, the 3 scales had sufficient reliability, validity, and fit. The researchers distributed electronic questionnaires to students in 4 universities in Jilin Province, China, and participants responded using 5-point Likert-type scales. The researchers collected 1,104 valid questionnaires. According to the analysis, college students' professional identity is a positive predictor of their academic achievement, and career maturity partially mediates the influence of professional identity on academic achievement. Therefore, improving Chinese college students' professional identity may improve their academic achievement, and professional identity can have a positive effect on academic achievement through career maturity. University administrators and teachers should enhance the career maturity of college students and promote their professional development.

Abstract

Membrane receptors at the surface of target cells are key host factors for virion entry; however, it is unknown whether trafficking and secretion of progeny virus requires host intracellular receptors. In this study, we demonstrate that dengue virus (DENV) interacts with KDEL receptors (KDELR), which cycle between the ER and Golgi apparatus, for vesicular transport from ER to Golgi. Depletion of KDELR by siRNA reduced egress of both DENV progeny and recombinant subviral particles (RSPs). Coimmunoprecipitation of KDELR with dengue structural protein prM required three positively charged residues at the N terminus, whose mutation disrupted protein interaction and inhibited RSP transport from the ER to the Golgi. Finally, siRNA depletion of class II Arfs, which results in KDELR accumulation in the Golgi, phenocopied results obtained with mutagenized prME and KDELR knockdown. Our results have uncovered a function for KDELR as an internal receptor involved in DENV trafficking.

50. Modeling and optimization of radiative cooling based thermoelectric generators

Abstract

The possibility of night-time power generation has recently stimulated interest in using the radiative sky cooling mechanism with thermoelectric generators (TEG). These passive, low-temperature difference devices have been shown to generate electricity at night with no active input of heat needed, instead using the ambient air itself as the heat source. Here, we optimize both the geometry and operating conditions of radiative cooling driven thermoelectric (RC-TE) generators. We determine the optimal operating conditions, including maximum power point and maximum efficiency point, by developing a combined thermal and electrical model. Our results show that the optimal operating condition results in larger power output than was previously expected. Moreover, we show that maximum power density occurs when the area ratio between cooler and P or N element reaches an optimal value. Finally, we perform a parametric study that takes account of environmental and structural parameters to improve the performance of the RC-TE device, including enhancing heat transfer between the hot surface and ambient air, suppressing the cooling loss of the radiative cooler, and optimizing the geometry of individual thermocouples.
