The osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a clinical manifestation of a condition of osteochondrosis (OC), which affects humans and animals. This is a condition resulting in endochondral ossification to change, which leads to a focal thickening of cartilage affecting usually higher pressure areas. In dogs, the OC occurs in specific anatomical locations and often involves joint surfaces that carry weight. The most frequently affected site is the flow of the proximal humeral head. However, it can also occur in the area distomedial humeral trochlea, the femoral condyles, the femoral trochlea and the medial trochlear ridge and lateral talus. This paper aims exemplifies it, through a case report, affecting the scapular humeral joint of a dog. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) is a nervous disease that affects ruminants, has a worldwide distribution and causes significant economic losses. PEM is abundantly described and studied in cattle and small ruminants, but there is little information about the disease in buffaloes, especially in Brazil. The objective of this work is to describe the clinical and pathological aspects of an outbreak of PEM in buffaloes in a feedlot in the state of Pará, Brazil. The outbreak occurred in a flock of 76 Murrah buffaloes, with an average age of five months, in a feedlot. Twenty-eight of these buffaloes became ill, and thirteen showed neurological signs and died. Two buffaloes underwent necropsy. The brain and fragments of various abdominal and thoracic cavity organs were fixed in 10% formalin and sent for histopathological examination. In the frontal, parietal, and occipital telencephalic lobes, the convolutions were flattened and yellowish, and when cut, there was a clear line of demarcation between the superficial and deep layers. Histologically, the intermediate layers of the cerebral cortex showed mild to moderate vacuolization of the neuropil, moderate enlargement of the perivascular, perineuronal, and periastrocyte spaces, moderate swelling and edema of astrocytes, and a large number of necrotic neurons. The work demonstrates that, despite being poorly documented in Brazil, PEM should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neurological syndromes in buffaloes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hanseníase ,Estudos prospectivos ,Quimioterapia combinada ,Patologia ,Infectious and parasitic diseases ,RC109-216 - Abstract
Introdução: a hanseníase apresenta potencial incapacitante secundário às reações hansênicas.

In recent decades, there have been significant advances in the diagnosis of diffuse gliomas, driven by the integration of novel technologies. These advancements have deepened our understanding of tumor oncogenesis, enabling a more refined stratification of the biological behavior of these neoplasms. This progress culminated in the fifth edition of the WHO classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in 2021. This comprehensive review article aims to elucidate these advances within a multidisciplinary framework, contextualized within the backdrop of the new classification. This article will explore morphologic pathology and molecular/genetics techniques (immunohistochemistry, genetic sequencing, and methylation profiling), which are pivotal in diagnosis, besides the correlation of structural neuroimaging radiophenotypes to pathology and genetics. It briefly reviews the usefulness of tractography and functional neuroimaging in surgical planning. Additionally, the article addresses the value of other functional imaging techniques such as perfusion MRI, spectroscopy, and nuclear medicine in distinguishing tumor progression from treatment-related changes. Furthermore, it discusses the advantages of evolving diagnostic techniques in classifying these tumors, as well as their limitations in terms of availability and utilization. Moreover, the expanding domains of data processing, artificial intelligence, radiomics, and radiogenomics hold great promise and may soon exert a substantial influence on glioma diagnosis. These innovative technologies have the potential to revolutionize our approach to these tumors. Ultimately, this review underscores the fundamental importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in employing recent diagnostic advancements, thereby hoping to translate them into improved quality of life and extended survival for glioma patients.

Background. Teratomas are neoplasms that arise from pluripotent germ cells, derived from two or more layers of germ cells. They are classified as mature tumors (cystic or solid), which contain well-differentiated tissues, or as immature tumors, which contain immature and embryonic structures. Its most frequent location is the female and male gonads; the mesenteric location is rare and approximately 40 cases have been described in the world literature. Within the diagnostic and therapeutic approach, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are used to characterize the lesion, assess intra-abdominal extension and the relationship with other structures. The diagnosis must be confirmed by histopathological examination. Clinical case. A 56-year-old female patient with a history of infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the left breast in remission. In follow-up studies, incidental abdominal tomography finding of an abdominopelvic lesion dependent on the mesentery at the level of the mesogastrium, smooth contours with fat-liquid level. Extension studies with negative tumor markers. Results: Due to high clinical and imaging suspicion of teratoma, the patient was taken to resection of the lesion. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma of the mesentery. Conclusion: Mesenteric teratoma is a rare clinical entity and is considered one of the differential diagnoses of an abdominal mass with a compressive effect. Diagnosis is mainly based on clinical examination and imaging findings. Early surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment; laparoscopic or open approach depends on the clinical characteristics and the experience of the surgeon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Melanoma is the malignant proliferation of melanocytes associated with aggressive behavior. The objective of this study was to determine the histological variables of cutaneous melanoma. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study carried out with reports of pathologies with a diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma in a pathology laboratory in Cali between 2016-2021. The variables were age, sex, location, subtype, Breslow thickness, ulceration, margins, mitosis, lymphovascular invasion, neurotropism, tumoral regression, Clark level and tumor infiltration by lymphocytes. Results: One hundred and six reports were obtained and 54 were excluded due to duplication. A descriptive analysis was made on the 52 records that were included, the mean age was 61 years, with a higher frequency in women with 55.8%. Of the 33 cases where the histological subtype was specified, the most frequent was superficial extension with 66.6%, followed by acral lentiginous with 18.1% and nodular with 15.2%. The most frequent location was in the extremities (61.5%); the most common Breslow was IV (34.6%), and the most frequent Clark was IV (34.6%). Ulceration was in 40.4%. The nodular subtype was the most aggressive presentation where 100% presented Breslow IV. Conclusions. The most common subtype of melanoma was that of superficial extension. In our population, the second most frequent was the acral lentiginous subtype, which was always located on the extremities. More than 50% of the melanomas had Breslow greater than or equal to III, which affects the prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aggressive osteoblastoma (AO) is an uncommon bone tumor that represents a borderline lesion between osteoblastoma and osteosarcoma. The vertebral column, the sacrum, the pelvis, and jaw/craniofacial bones are primarily affected. Aggressive osteoblastoma does not metastasize and is treated by surgical resection. The authors report a case of AO in a 9-year-old female patient presenting with 5th and 7th cranial nerve palsy. Prior pathological history included resection of an expansile nodule in the left temporal bone. Conventional radiological examination and computed tomography (CT) of the skull revealed an osteoblastic lesion arising in the petrous portion of the left temporal bone, measuring 5.2 cm in the largest dimension. The patient was subjected to partial surgical resection of the process. Microscopy revealed a primary neoplastic bone composed of numerous epithelioid round osteoblasts disposed in solid sheets and with mild atypia, large eosinophilic cytoplasm, and an eccentric, ovoid nucleus. The process exhibited loose stroma, low mitotic index, osteoid formation, and a few osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells. The diagnosis of AO was thus established. After 5 months of clinical follow-up, the patient is asymptomatic, without evidence of tumoral growth on CT scans.

This paper aims to verify the effectiveness of the pile integrity test (PIT) for evaluating the presence of anomaly in short caisson foundation elements, more specifically reinforcement exposure due to an execution problem during concreting. The foundation elements tested belong to the expansion of the structure of an electricity substation in the municipality of Itá, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In general, the PIT is not commonly used for caissons, due to the surface irregularities occurring along the shaft in this type of foundation. The obtained results showed that the PIT can promote assertiveness and safety when assessing the integrity of these foundation elements, as later confirmed at the site by excavating the problematic elements and performing visual inspection. Thus, the results may validate the use of the PIT as a tool for optimizing the executive control of cast-in-place foundations, even though a Brazilian technical standard on the use of the low strain integrity test for this purpose is still lacking. An 80-year-old male presented with a 3-year history of progressive violaceous and edematous plaques on both hands. The remaining physical examination was unremarkable and systemic symptoms were absent. All complementary investigations were negative, including serology testing for human immunodeficiency virus. Skin biopsy revealed a dermal vascular proliferation, composed of angulated vessels dissecting collagen bundles, lined by flattened endothelial cells without atypia. Immunohistochemistry showed positive staining for human herpesvirus 8, CD31, and erythroblast transformation-specific-related gene, confirming the diagnosis of lymphangioma-like Kaposi's sarcoma (LLKS). LLKS represents a rare pathological variant of all Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) subtypes, which is noticeable for the lymphangioma-like spaces that are usually only focally found. We present a case of LLKS as a variant of classic KS to raise awareness among dermatologists for this uncommon morphologic expression of KS and its distinctive histologic pattern. The increase in sheep production is directly related to the health status of the flock. Brazil is one of the largest sheep producers in the world, and the sheep flock is concentrated in southern and northeast regions. Infectious diseases are responsible for severe economic losses resulting from a decrease in milk and meat production, deaths, and cost of treatment. Among infectious diseases, viral diseases are described chiefly in case reports or retrospective studies. This study aimed to review the main features of viral diseases that affect sheep in Brazil and their current situation in the Brazilian territory. We included eight viral diseases described in Brazil: rabies, bluetongue, contagious ecthyma, foot and mouth disease, visna-maedi, enzootic nasal tumor, ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma, and border disease. We review the etiological, epidemiological, clinical, and pathological findings for each agent and included differential diagnoses, information on recommended diagnostic methods to confirm the disease etiology, and control measures. This study served as quick consultation material for field veterinarians for an accurate diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) is a common oral mucosal lesion with varied and etiopathogenesis. It presents with pain and clinically manifests as an oval-shaped lesion with regular borders surrounded by an erythematous halo and covered by pseudo membrane. Due to the uncertainty about the possible causative factors, there is a need for studies that seek a better understanding of its pathophysiology. In this context, this study aimed to discuss the etiopathogenesis and clinical aspects of RAU. It was a descriptive study characterized as a narrative literature review. The inclusion criteria were studies relevant to the topic, written in Portuguese and English, without a time limit. The search was conducted between December 2022 and July 2023, through active searching in the Pubmed, LILACS, and SciELO platforms, as well as grey literature from Google Scholar and secondary free search. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) were crossed using a Boolean operator, namely "aphthous ulcers" AND "predisposing factors." RAU has a multifactorial etiopathogenesis and may be associated with immunological, hereditary, nutritional, dietary, psycho-emotional, hormonal, and local trauma factors, although its relationship with microorganisms is controversial. Clinically, it is classified based on its morphology and clinical course. Morphologically, it is classified into minor, major, and herpetiform types, with the minor form being the most common. Therefore, RAU is a frequent oral mucosal lesion, with the minor form being the most prevalent, and despite its uncertain etiopathogenesis, studies indicate that immunological, traumatic, hereditary, hormonal, nutritional, and psycho-social factors are directly related to its development. Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female genital organs. For many years the prognosis was based on histopathological grade and type. The pathological identification of endometrial carcinomas included two types. Type I - endometrioid (EEC), similar to the endometrium - was characterized by genetic predisposition, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, anovulatory cycles, and irregular menstruation resulting from hyperestrogenism, which is the main predisposing factor for the development of type I EC. Type II included serous, clear cell, and undifferentiated carcinomas. Here were observed older patient's age, higher clinical stage to compare with non-endometrioid histology, and finally poorer prognosis. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) study found mutations in several endometrioid and serous cancer genes. The TCGA has identified four molecular subclasses based on somatic mutation burden and copy number variations. Recent data show the prognostic value of TCGA subclasses because they correlate with patient survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research study focuses on analyzing vital signs of different pathologies, recreated by means of mannequin-type simulators, to generate a quick and effective diagnosis for home care monitoring during a health emergency such as COVID-19. A descriptive data analysis model (CRISP-DM) is implemented to examine changes in vital signs through the creation of an interactive visualization tool. This tool is designed with a graph for each vital sign, allowing assessing their changes independently to provide a general assessment of the patient's health. In addition, the tool also assembles all vital signs into a single graph to allow identification and analysis of every instant in which vital sign variations surpass normal parameters. In conclusion, the tool developed here provides visual and interactive support for health professionals, which allows them to make informed decisions, enhancing the traditional scheme of hospital services when preventing complications in the health of patients.

Upper limb nerve variations may be related to the absence of a nerve, an interconnection between two nerves or a variant course. The purpose of this review is to screen the existing literature on upper limb nerve variations that may alter the neurologic diagnostic process. A scoping review was performed following PRISMA for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Initially, 1331 articles were identified by searching Pubmed and Web of Science until the 22nd of October 2022. After screening, reading, and additional searching 50 articles were included in this review. Variations were divided into two categories: 1) variations causing a different innervation pattern involving sensory, motor, or both types of fibers, and 2) variations causing or related to compression syndromes. Two-thirds of the included articles were cadaver studies. Nine articles were diagnostic studies on symptomatic or healthy individuals involving medical imaging and/or surgery. Nerve variations that may cause a different innervation pattern concern most frequently their interconnection. The connection between the median and musculocutaneous nerve in the upper limb and the connection between the median and ulnar nerve in the forearm (Martin-Gruber) or hand (Riche-Cannieu) may be present in half of the population. Injury to these connections may cause compound peripheral neuropathies a result of variant sensory and motor branching patterns. Muscular, vascular, or combined anomalies in the forearm were reported as causes of entrapment neuropathies. These nerve variations may mimic classical entrapment syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome or compression at ulnar canal (Guyon's canal). Knowledge of frequent nerve variations in the arm may be important during the diagnostic process and examination. Variant innervation patterns may explain non-classical clinical signs and/or symptoms during provocative tests. Classical nerve compression syndromes in the arm may warrant for differential diagnosis, especially in the case of persistent or recurrent symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
