Over the past several years, there has been much debate on the nature of Christ's intercessory work in Hebrews. At present, the most recent arguments are in favor of understanding it in view of a continuing Yom Kippur atoning liturgy or an atoning tamid sacrifice. This article argues that a continuing sacrificial framework of any variety does not best explain the presentation in Hebrews of Jesus's ongoing work. Through an analysis of the passages in which Jesus's body and intercession are related and through recourse to patristic and medieval interpreters, this article argues that Jesus's intercession--and the role of his body and blood therein--is best understood through the frameworks of the ark and the paschal blood. This article presents a new theological approach, called “theogastronomy”. This theological aesthetic argues that the relationship that a person, a people and a civilization establish with their “gastronomy” – in the etymological sense of the term – has a theophanic value and holds a discreet pastoral and theoretical fecundity. To demonstrate this hypothesis, the present article proceeds in three stages. First, it reflects on the concept of theogastronomy, as well as on the relationship between this approach and the religious knowledge of the biblical Revelation. Then, it places this theological aesthetic in its own literary and spiritual “cradle”, namely, the sapiential writings. Finally, it shows how this sapiential branch of theology can lead us to revisit, in depth, the living core of the Christian faith: the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ, the definitive expression of his free choice to give his life as food for the countless multitude of men and women seeking life in its fullness. A question arises regarding theology and its functions when trying to cope with the coronavirus pandemic. Surely Christian faith – along with other religions – can play a role in helping to deal with this crisis, both for individuals and collectively. Theology connects with the effort religious faith and Churches perform and provides models and ideas to highlight the Christian sense of what is happening, that is, in reference to a saving God. Four keys, rooted in the Christian tradition, are proposed that allow us to understand these difficult times in a meaningful way, that is, as revealing “signs of the times” for believers, assisting them in their struggle to cope with these challenging circumstances.

8. From Easter to Holy Week : The Paschal Mystery and Liturgical Renewal in the Twentieth Century

- Abstract
The story of the twentieth-century Liturgical Movement is, more than anything else, about the rediscovery and renewed understanding of the fundamental reality of the Paschal Mystery and of the Paschal identity of the Church. This identity is expressed and celebrated whenever the Body of Christ – every member – welcomes new members in the waters of baptism and feasts with them in the Eucharist, especially as these are celebrated during Holy Week. This book explores this rediscovery, first in the Roman Catholic Church and then in the Episcopal Church and other Churches of the Anglican Communion, and looks in particular at how both grassroots and official work played a role in renewing and restoring the liturgical celebrations of Holy Week.

- Abstract
This book is written by Louis St. Hilaire and follows the USCCB's framework for “The Mission of Jesus Christ.” It takes the reader through creation, the Fall of Man, and Christ's Paschal Mystery to the reader's own life and what Christ's redemption means for them. The author lays out according to the USCCB's framework the moral implications of the Paschal Mystery in the life of the believer and answers common challenges such as explaining redemptive suffering and why God allowed his Son to die on the Cross. About the series: The Formed in Christ series is a solid and faithful resource that provides a thorough treatment of the Catholic faith and the various branches of theology. Teachers may use this series to draw lessons for all core curriculum subjects in the USCCB's doctrinal framework for high school level theology. Each book in the Formed in Christ series is written at a high school age-appropriate level and includes further reading from magisterial or other orthodox sources (ranging from the Church Fathers to books published within the last ten years), along with discussion and reflection questions. Also included in each book is a “challenges” section, which follows from the USCCB's suggestions for apologetic topics for each course. The simple structure of the Formed in Christ series is meaningfully designed to allow teachers to build their own course or to use these books as a supplement. It means they can also be used by homeschoolers or religious educators, by the beginner armchair theologian, or by the college or high school student for independent or group study. The versatility inherent in these books means that they are not only for a high school classroom, but for anyone willing to put in the work to learn more about the truths of the faith.

- Abstract
'I came that you may have life and have it in all its fullness'(John 10:10). In this book, Revd Dr. Steven Underdown presents the paschal mystery--the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus--as the means by which the Son first realized that utter fullness of life which God had always intended for humankind. He also argues that it is only in and though the paschal mystery that human beings find their fulfillment. Only insofar as someone is open to be given in love is that person open to receive fullness of new life. The book explores some of the ways by which, under God's grace, the church can establish patterns of life and worship which will enable growth into the paschal mystery. It focuses in particular on a weekly pattern of life established in various parish and monastic communities in which every week is celebrated as a kind of'Holy Week in miniature.'This pattern--termed the Pattern of the Week--is seen as providing a context for life-giving response to the divine initiative.

- Abstract
Christ Our Passover Has Been Sacrificed examines the paschal mystery as it is presented throughout the liturgical year in The Roman Missal. After offering an in-depth definition of the paschal mystery the author guides the reader through Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, and more, mining the riches of paschal mystery spirituality. Biblical accounts interpret the death and resurrection of Jesus; liturgical texts in The Roman Missal present a rich seam of spiritual truth for the reader to apply to his or her life. By remembering Jesus'death and resurrection, Roman Catholics celebrate daily dying and rising to new life. The author serves as a guide through paschal mystery spirituality, while also noting the mystical theology--reflections on experiences of God--represented by the prayers in The Roman Missal, particularly those dealing with Jesus'suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, and gift of the Spirit. Through reflections and meditation questions, readers are invited to name their own personally transforming mystical experiences, which connect them to God in deep levels and move them outward into the community to share spirituality.

16. Union and communion: The mystical spirituality of James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905)

- Abstract
James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), founder of the China Inland Mission in June 1865, is one of the most prominent names in the history of Protestant missions. He authored Union and Communion, a short devotional commentary on the Song of Songs, published in 1894. Like many of his other writings, it is suffused with mystical elements. Taylor's mystical dimension, however, has been eclipsed by an overemphasis on his intriguing 19th century missionary endeavours in China; in addition, his writings have been eclipsed by popular missionary biographies and secondary sources. Through a focus on his soul landscape and intimacy with God, this research has reconnected the mystical threads for an in-depth understanding of the relationship between his mystical spirituality and his missionary spirituality. By recovering Taylor's mystical wisdom (through the biblical frameworks of the Song of Songs, the Fourth Gospel, and the apostle Paul's writings), the research suggests that Taylor be recognised and re-visioned as a Protestant mystic cum missionary.

CHRISTMAS , *THEOLOGY , *CHRISTOLOGY , *INCARNATION , *PASCHAL mystery , *SERMON (Literary form) - Abstract
Balthasar's reflections on the mystery of Christmas provide not only a basic entry into his thought, but also an expanded view of his theological vision. Drawing primarily upon his sermons and scriptural meditations, this essay presents a Balthasar both familiar and new: ideas at the heart of his Christology, Trinitarian theology, Mariology, and anthropology receive significant attention. Yet Balthasar's reflections on Christmas also provide some of his most important engagements with less-noticed themes—particularly regarding Christian praxis toward the poor and oppressed. More than in other texts, these shorter pieces routinely insist that each Christian is called to follow the path taken by the Son of God and set out into the world in service of the poor and lowly. - Abstract
St. Paul uses the image of Paschal Lamb only once. What is the real meaning of this symbol in his theology? It symbolises the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ but with a different emphasis. What does he emphasize? The aim of this study is to show the exegetical meaning of 1 Cor 5:7 in order to have an overt theological emphasis of the imagery used in this particular context. The linguistic analysis from a historical critical method is used here to arrive at its theological significance. The study propounds the meaning, reality and the significance of the Hebrew original Paschal celebration and its commemoration from Semetical, Hellenistical and Greco-Roman culture and as understood in the OT Scriptures of various periods. The result is quite different from the hitherto theological understanding of the symbol and its significance. Paul is the first NT theologian to use this symbol and others have followed him with varying degrees of understanding of this symbol. A comparative study on this is made in this book. It shows to what extent it is relevant for Christians in postmodern Europe and India.

ABSTRACT This article presents a new theological approach, called “theogastronomy”. This theological aesthetic argues that the relationship that a person, a people and a civilization establish with their “gastro-nomy” – in the etymological sense of the term – has a theophanic value and holds a discreet pastoral and theoretical fecundity. CHRISTIAN eschatology , *RELIGION , *DEATH , *PASCHAL mystery , *SACRED mysteries , *PASCHAL triduum - Abstract
The «Descent of Christ into Hell» is possibly the most obscure mystery of Christianity. Yet it sheds some light upon the deepest question of human existence: what happens after death? Jesus Christ himself suffered the fracture of His human nature - according to the biblical and patristic formulation, while his body remained in the tomb, his soul «visited» the place of the dead. He, however, resurrected, vanquishing death and converting it into a portal that opens out to everlasting life. In this way He redeemed both the dead and death itself. This thesis first reviews ecclesial formulations (biblical, patristic, theological, artistic and magisterial) on the «Mystery of Holy Saturday» to gather those elements that illumine, with a Christological or Paschal light, the postmortal destiny of human individuals. The concluding essay offers a systematic synthesis of individual eschatology as patterned after the Sacred Triduum of Christ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper discusses Shakespeare’s preoccupation with the Christian notions of divine love, forgiveness and justice in The Tragedy of King Lear. In my reading I employ Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenological reflection on the givenness of love and Hans-Urs von Balthasar’s theology of Paschal mystery. I take issue with the Marxist and existentialist interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragedy which prevailed in the second half of the 20th century. My aim is not a simple recuperation of the “redemptionism” of the play, but an in-depth consideration of Christian allusions in the play which may tie love and forgiveness to justice and throw light on the ending of King Lear.

The article presents a real person who experienced the paschal mystery of Christ. The person is placed in a specific historical context. Moreover, the article shows the external circumstances of the Servant of God Fr. Franciszek Blachnicki’s life and the dynamics of his internal life from the paschal perspective that is rooted in baptism. A constant struggle with egoism as a continuous passage (Passover) from the own “I” – esse naturale to a new man – esse supernaturale; passing from shortcomings and weaknesses to virtue, from everything that enslaves to everything that gives freedom – all these brought visible fruit in the pastoral work. Indeed, all these may be possible only when the priest deliberately shares his fate with the fate of Paschal Christ. He is tormented by the Cross and crowned with the glory of the resurrection.

EnglishSome intuitions of Sociological Stylistics are effective to better perceive how the intertextual dependence between documents is the reflection of a concrete and historical social dialogism. This approach helps to balance the historicist vision and does justice to the texts. This work analyzes the dependencies between Judg 5:12; Ps 68:19 and Eph 4:8, taking into account their different versions and points of view. These concrete texts show an intertextual dependence in which literality takes a secondary value with respect to the historical novelty that originates the new enunciation. In addition, each new context governs the use of the previous word endowed with authority and does so in order to preserve it. The Christian paschal mystery or the reconfiguration of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple (70 AD) conditions the way of updating an ancient text using it with new purposes.

Balthasar’s reflections on the mystery of Christmas provide not only a basic entry into his thought, but also an expanded view of his theological vision. Drawing primarily upon his sermons and scriptural meditations, this essay presents a Balthasar both familiar and new: ideas at the heart of his Christology, Trinitarian theology, Mariology, and anthropology receive significant attention. Yet Balthasar’s reflections on Christmas also provide some of his most important engagements with less-noticed themes—particularly regarding Christian praxis toward the poor and oppressed. More than in other texts, these shorter pieces routinely insist that each Christian is called to follow the path taken by the Son of God and set out into the world in service of the poor and lowly.

Tako čovjek, živeći stvarnost sinovstva, blagujući euharistiju i primajući milost preostalih sakramenata, živi i sve dublje ulazi u proces pobožanstvenjenja sve do eshatološkoga ispunjenja, tj. sudjelovanja u božanskoj naravi. The deification of human is part of the anthropological truth about the dignity of man that speaks of climbing to high degrees of holiness. It finds its foundations in creation. God, communio in himself, created man in his image and with it imprinted a holy thirst for unity and community which fulfills only in God up to participation in God's nature. However, sin harmed and disabled the fulfillment of God's original intention for man. Son of God incarnated with the purpose of re-establishment and re-foundation of humans in the divine life. Taking human nature, He shared his divine nature with humans. With his paschal mystery, ascension , and resurrection, Christ renewed man and showed him the way he should go if a man in his freedom wants to boldly step in process of deification. In that process, Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit gave the Church the means by which human can in the most excellent way achieve deification and sacraments. The sacrament of baptism presents the foundation of deification. Through baptism, man becomes a son, by grace he receives what Son has by nature. New reality received in baptism man lives in ongoing participation in Eucharist meaning perfect participation in the divine life. And so man living actuality sonship consuming eucharist and receiving the grace of the other sacraments lives and grows more deeply in process of deification up until eschatological fulfillment, participating in divine nature.

RITES & ceremonies , *PASCHAL mystery , *EASTER , *AGNOSTICISM ,SRI Lanka Civil War, 1983-2009 - Abstract
In April 2010, eleven months after the end of Sri Lanka's civil war, I participated in the Catholic Easter rite in a Tamil fishing village in the Vanni, where the last battle between the Sri Lankan government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was fought. This article explores the way in which the ritual enactments of the paschal mystery, called pasch, came to have enormously therapeutic effects for the survivors during Holy Week. The decisive factors in the villagers' Easter experience included: the nature of the orthodox rite and accompanying local traditions, the unique historical context in which they found themselves, and their readiness to receive healing and start a new life. The article calls for the abandonment of methodological agnosticism in order for us to understand the villagers' religious experiences, and contributes to the emerging field of 'post-secular' anthropology. - Abstract
The Canadian theologian Jean-Marie Roger Tillard dedicated much of his lifetime research to explore the Church's being and its mission. His central focus is the celebration of the Eucharist and its essential role of communion between the Church and the Holy Trinity. His work goes to show an interdependence between what the Church celebrates (lex orandi) and what the Church believes about itself (lex credendi). This interaction between the "rule of prayer" and the "rule of faith" is further explored in this article from two diff erent perspectives: Tillard's theological method and one of interpreting the Church through the celebration of the Eucharist. LITURGICS , *PASCHAL mystery , *EASTER ,PASSION of Jesus Christ - Abstract
This work proposes an approach to three authors of great importance in the postconciliar liturgical debate: Salvatore Marsili, Louis Bouyer and Joseph Ratzinger. Marsili understands liturgy as a moment in the history of salvation, emphasizing the continuity between the salvific acts and the rites that actualizes them. To evaluate his contributions well, this study investigates the marsilian comprehension of the history of salvation. In the writings of Louis Bouyer, liturgy is understood as the «incarnation» of the mystery of our faith: the paschal mystery. In his works, four meanings of mystery can be identified: as the inner nature of God; as his salvific plan with respect to man and the world (wisdom); as the realization of this design on the cross; and as the mystery of worship in which we are transformed into adorers in spirit and truth. For Joseph Ratzinger, the essential form of christian worship can be synthetized in the Pauline expression logiké latreía (Rom 12, 1). The reference to the «logos» gives a solid foundation in his approach that permits a distinction of three dimensions of liturgy: christological, cosmical and cognoscitive- existential. In the liturgy, the incarnate Logos, the logos in the world, and the logos in man meet. This work highlights how the three authors position us in the historico-salvific perspective that Sacrosanctum Concilium proposes and the Catechism of the Catholic Church develops. The main purpose of this article is to show the relationship between the liturgy and popular piety especially in the Middle Ages. Particularly at that time the unity of Paschal Mystery was broken up in the faithfull’s minds. Due to the religious and cultural changes in the medieval period the passion devotion was born as less theological form of experiencing the relationship with Jesus Christ focused more on its emotional aspect.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a meeting with Christ – a physician of the soul and body, who in his Church continues to spread the kingdom of God in the world, raising the sick from the misery of sin and despair. It shows that through his Paschal Mystery, the Son of God gave suffering, illness and death a new meaning, thanks to which a suffering person can join in the work of the salvation of the world, having in perspective a vision of a glorious resurrection together with Christ. This sacrament gives man the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the Church, to his own perfection and to give glory to God, and above all gives the grace of the Holy Spirit, which strengthens faith, hope and love against the evil spirit, trying to attack in the most critical moments of life, which are severe illness and impending death. In this way, the sacrament clearly has an anti-demonic dimension in all these aspects.

In our contemporary cultural context, the Christian references and the ritual cues no longer work as rites provided by an ecclesiastical institution in the way that they were still able to in the 1960s. The long-term memory which guaranteed the symbolic effectiveness of this rituality has evaporated. The author identifies three ways in which people’s relationship with memory has changed: it is no longer inscribed in time and space; this goes hand in hand with a form of “virtualization” of memory; but especially of its de-institutionalization, meaning that the norms guiding the ritual are no longer founded on an institutional basis linked to a collective memory, but rather on the individual subject and his or her unique character. This is a situation which poses a challenge to the Christian tradition of funerals, precisely because this is founded on a long ritual memory, which is incarnated, and is institutional. One solution to this problem has been to adapt to the expectations and aspirations of our contemporaries by relativizing traditional ritual forms. The author suggests the real question is rather to discern the specifically Christian features of ritualizing death within the long tradition of the Church and identify the elements of this deep Christian “memory” on which certain aspects of the liturgy depend for meaning. Losing this memory would endanger the proclamation of faith and Christian hope. An important source for this rereading is Augustine’s treatise De cura gerenda pro mortuis. It provides the key to interpreting this tradition, thereby enabling a definition of the characteristics of this Christian “memory” which is operative in funerals, and saying how this serves toward building Christian identity. This enables the author to outline the features of a specifically Christian ritualization of funerals for today and the implications for proclaiming a truly paschal faith.

In modern liturgical theology, the concept of “anamnesis” has become a dominant feature that defines the liturgy. Without understanding the essence of anamnesis, it is impossible to grasp the essence of the Christian liturgy. In other words, without anamnesis, the liturgy would not be liturgy. Liturgical anamnesis is, above all, an objective remembrance and actualization hic et nunc of the Paschal Mystery of Christ. It is a reminder of the past, but also an anticipation of the salvific future and the heavenly liturgy. In a narrower sense, the anamnesis is an integral part of the Christian euchology. This paper presents the latter understanding of the word “anamnesis” as a formal element in the structure of the euchology that recalls not only the different stages and facts of Christ’s life, but also the entire history of salvation in both a theological and a chronological sense.
