Underpinning almost every Paleozoic paleogeographic reconstruction and tectonic model of the Lachlan Orogen is the interpretation of the structural geology related to crustal collision and amalgamation. Bounding the eastern margin of the Lachlan Orogen is a north-trending corridor of Cambrian–Ordovician turbidites that in northeast Victoria are recognised as the Pinnak Sandstone or previously known as the Mallacoota Beds. This sequence contains an accretionary prism related early S* foliation, syn-sedimentary dykes, slump structures, early faults or décollements and early quartz veins. These indicate anisotropic compaction by fluid extraction in a shallow marine turbidite sequence that underwent localised deformation (D1), which can be attributed to the Benambran Orogeny (ca 450 Ma). There was a change in the rheological properties during the ensuing late Silurian D2 Bindian Orogeny (ca 420 Ma). This event produced north–south-trending upright, east-verging folds (F2) with a marked partitioning of strain between the different sedimentary units. Folds plunge south at ∼30°, are tight to isoclinal, with local collapsed hinges and limb thrusts. This D2 deformation along the paleo-Pacific margin involved dextral transpression and a southerly propagation of the deformation front. Superimposed on these structures is an east–west paleostress pattern and two episodes of faulting (D3 and D4). In the first, brittle strike-slip faults were accompanied by ductile folding related to east–west shortening during the Middle–Late Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny (ca 385–370 Ma). These were accompanied by the emplacement of the Sandpatch Point Granite. The second episode (D4) of strike-slip faulting reactivated many of the earlier faults during further east–west shortening and was related to the Carboniferous Kanimblan Orogeny (ca 354–343 Ma). This is best seen close to the granite contact where the strong crystallised granite reinforced the contact metamorphosed greywacke sequence, inhibiting ductile deformation so that faults deformed in a brittle fashion. Eastern Australia was at a convergent plate boundary where a Middle–Late Ordovician turbiditic sequence was accreted to an accretionary prism. The Pinnak Sandstone contains a weak phyllosilicate alignment (S*), D1 faults and folds from localised deformation in the accretionary prism. The Silurian Bindian Orogeny produced upright east-verging, south-plunging F2 folds. Brittle faults overprint the Bindian tectonic features and are accompanied by minor folding, marking the transition into Middle Devonian and Carboniferous deformation and intrusive events. The kinematics and geometries associated with these deformation events reflect the changing tectonic regime along the paleo-Pacific margin of eastern Australia during east–west compression. The U–Pb detrital zircon record of the Surat Basin, an important part of the Great Australian Superbasin, has already revealed important insights about sediment source terranes. However, owing to the high closure temperature of zircons, low-temperature thermal events that might have impacted the sediment are not recorded. Here, new 40Ar/39Ar detrital mica ages, which record low-temperature events as a result of isotopic resetting, are paired with published U–Pb detrital zircon ages from the same samples to provide a more complete interpretation of the tectonic and thermal history of the Jurassic-age Precipice Sandstone and Evergreen Formation. The 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of mica grains from five wells reveals two broad groups with distinct age populations: 1500–180 Ma and 150–45 Ma. Micas older than about 180 Ma are sourced from multiple terranes. The slight discrepancy in ages between the 40Ar/39Ar and the U–Pb systems of the same samples may represent differences in closure temperature. However, some micas, such as those dating to ca 180 Ma, may also reflect a thermal reset event. Similarly, the younger group of micas, split into Cretaceous and Paleogene populations, reflect the impact of post-depositional thermal events on the basin. Isotopic resetting of the micas was likely the result of hydrothermal fluids migrating through reactivated faults, fractures and/or porous and permeable sediments. The origin of the fluids during the Cretaceous can be linked to an eastern subduction zone and subsequent igneous underplating resulting in uplift and denudation. The exact source of the hydrothermal fluids for the micas of Paleogene age, recorded in samples collected from the base of the Evergreen Formation, however, remains uncertain. Importantly, 40Ar/39Ar dating of mica from sandstones permits the detection of post-depositional thermal events that may have implications for tracing fluid migration throughout the basin and reconstructing the Cretaceous–Paleogene tectonic history of the basin. Combining 40Ar/39Ar dating of micas with U–Pb dating of zircons reveals a more complete tectonic and thermal history of the Jurassic-age Precipice Sandstone and Evergreen Formation of the Surat Basin. 40Ar/39Ar dating of detrital micas reveals two broad groups with distinct age populations: 1500–180 Ma and 140–45 Ma. Ages older than ca 180 Ma are linked to multiple source terranes, including the Thomson and New England orogens, and the contemptuous magmatic arc. The sedimentary sequence of the Ninama Basin is associated with the latest phase of the continental Deccan volcanism of the Indian peninsula. It occurs as inter-, intratrappeans with a 39-m thick sequence comprising Sukhbhadar Formation and Ninama Limestone. The investigation aims to reconstruct its depositional setting based on the lithofacies and inorganic geochemistry to understand the influence of paleosalinity, paleoredox, paleodepth, provenance and paleoclimate on the sedimentation pattern. It is characterized by clastic and chemically formed rocks, including shale, mudstone, siltstone, sandstone and limestone. Facies analysis has revealed seven lithofacies, amongst which four are clastic facies, shale (SH), calcareous shale (CSH), silty mudstone (SM) and lithic greywacke (LGW), and three are carbonate facies, namely, grey-black limestone (GBL), cherty limestone (CL) and marlite (ML). Using geochemical analysis of major oxides and trace elements, ratios of Ca/(Ca+Fe), Sr/Ba, V/(V+Ni), V/Cr, Fe/(Ca+Mg), Ti/Al, Na/K, K/(Fe+Mg), CIA-K and MAP were determined and used to interpret and note the changes in the depositional system. The combined results of the lithofacies and geochemistry indicate that the deposition occurred in three phases. Phase 1 is characterized by high energy conditions in the shallow to moderate depth brackish-saline lake with oxic to dysoxic conditions; Phase 2 is characterized by anoxic deep fresh to the brackish water basin; and Phase 3 is characterized by semiarid conditions, saline, anoxic waters, high evaporation leading to shallowing of the lake, and low to moderate terrestrial input. This lacustrine basin in the paleotopographic low of the Deccan Volcanic Province is characterized by distinct lithology governed by various depositional parameters. A composite depositional model is constructed for the Ninama Basin, reflecting three phases of evolution that are dominantly controlled by the paleoenvironment. Research highlights: The present study focuses on lithofacies and inorganic geochemical analysis of Ninama paleolake sediments, Saurashtra intertrappeans, to interpret their paleosalinity, paleoredox, water depth, provenance, detrital influx, and paleoclimate. Phase 1 deposition was initiated in paleotopographic low of Deccan Traps, in an oxic–dysoxic, high-energy turbulent brackish water environment, in humid conditions. Phase 2 characterizes fine-grained clastic facies deposited in anoxic, fresh-brackish, deep lake waters in humid conditions. Phase 3 marks the shallowing, evident by carbonate facies with low-moderate terrestrial input deposited in saline and anoxic paleolake in semiarid conditions with high evaporation and low-moderate precipitation. In this work, we present new biostratigraphic and paleoecological data from the Mignone River valley, located in the central sector of the Tyrrhenian Sea margin and part of the wider Tarquinia basin, and cores in the area of Rome. By combining the new paleontological information with a review of the extant literature, we re-examine the stratigraphic architecture of the Pliocene succession in the central sector of the northwestern Tyrrhenian Sea margin, spanning the Zanclean (MPl1; 5.33–5.08 Ma) through the early Piacenzian (MPl4b; 3.57–3.31 Ma), and of the following Pleistocene transgressive-regressive sequence, comprising the Gelasian (MPl6; 2.59–1.81 Ma) through the Santernian (MPl1; 1.81–1.5 Ma). We propose a revision of the paleogeographic evolution of the central Tyrrhenian Sea basins throughout the Pliocene-Lower Pleistocene interval, by coherently framing it within the chronology of the volcanic phases that occurred in this region. In particular, our reconstruction points toward the presence of a single Transgressive-Regressive (T-R) sequence starting with the Zanclean reflooding of the Mediterranean after the Messinian Salinity Crisis and ending in the Piacenzian, as opposed to the previously proposed occurrence of two depositional T-R sequences separated by an erosional phase affecting part of the Globorotalia puncticulata biozone. [Display omitted] The Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) is crucial for regional and global climates. However, the development of the IPWP and its effect on the regional climate during the Cenozoic remain unclear. Here, using a compilation of sea surface temperature (SST) records (mainly since the middle Miocene) and multimodel paleoclimate simulations, our results indicated that the extent, intensity and warmest temperature position of the IPWP changed markedly during the Cenozoic. Specifically, its extent decreased, its intensity weakened, and its warmest temperature position shifted from the Indian to western Pacific Ocean over time. The atmospheric CO 2 dominated its extent and intensity, while paleogeography, by restricting the distribution of the Indian Ocean and the width of the tropical seaways, controlled the shift in its warmest temperature position. In particular, the eastward shift to the western Pacific Ocean from the middle to late Miocene inferred from compiled SST records likely resulted from the constriction of tropical seaways. Furthermore, by changing the atmospheric thermal structure and atmospheric circulation, the reduced extent and intensity of the IPWP decreased the annual precipitation in the western Indian Ocean, eastern Asia and Australia, while the shift in the warmest temperature position from the Indian to western Pacific Ocean promoted aridification in Australia. Qualitative model-data agreements are obtained for both the IPWP SST and regional climate. From the perspective of past warm climates with high concentrations of atmospheric CO 2 , the expansion and strengthening of the IPWP will occur in a warmer future and favor excessive precipitation in eastern Asia and Australia. Detrital zircon provenance analysis plays a key role in reconstructions of past tectonic and sedimentary environments. However, non-unique (or even erroneous) interpretations can be introduced due to the inherent limitations of both zircon provenance analysis (fertility bias, recycling) and those of single-proxy provenance systems in general. Apatite crystallizes in a wider range of lithologies than zircon, and can thus facilitate more detailed source reconstructions. In this study, detrital apatite analysis of Cryogenian to Ordovician sandstones in the Cathaysia Block was carried out in comparison with detrital zircon data for a better understanding of the source-sink process on the northern margin of Gondwana. In contrast to the abundant Grenvillian (1300-900 Ma) detrital zircons of igneous origin, detrital apatites show major Pan-African (650-500 Ma) age peaks that are mostly derived from metamorphic rocks (52%-72%). The apatite data show that the Cathaysia Block mainly received detritus from western Australia and India during the late Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic, with much lower affinities to East Antarctica and the terranes of Iran-Turkey. Provenance variations include a shift with time in the major age populations from ca. 900 Ma to 600 Ma with a decrease in metamorphic apatite (from 72% to 52% of all grains) in the late Cryogenian, an increase in high-grade metamorphic apatite (from 27% to 56%) in the late Ediacaran-Cambrian, and an increase in igneous apatite (from 33% to 45% of all grains) in the Early Ordovician. In contrast, detrital zircon data could only reveal the source change in the late Ediacaran. These provenance switches were likely caused by the unroofing of Pan-African orogens (640-490 Ma) and subsequent erosion of their exposed cores, due to the rapid uplift of source rocks formed in the Pan-African orogens during the Gondwana assembly. Weathering, erosion, and sediment transport in modern landscapes may be investigated via direct observation of attributes such as elevation, relief, bedrock lithology, climate, drainage organization, watershed extent, and others. Studies of ancient landscape evolution lack this synoptic perspective, however, and instead must rely more heavily on downstream records of fluvial deposits. Provenance analysis based on detrital grain ages has greatly enhanced the utility of such records but has often focused broadly on regional to continental scales. This approach may overlook important details of localized watersheds, which could lead to significant misinterpretation of past sediment dispersal patterns. The present study, therefore, explores the impact of geographic and stratigraphic sampling density on detrital zircon provenance, based on a high-density investigation of U-Pb ages (N = 23, n = 4905) obtained from a narrow chronostratigraphic range (~2 m.y.) within a relatively small (~25,000 km²) area of an Eocene nonmarine sedimentary basin. Based on multidimensional scaling and DZmix modeling, these strata comprise seven distinct, approximately isochronous detrital zircon (DZ) chronofacies, defined as ". . . a group of sedimentary rocks that contains a specified suite of detrital zircon age populations" (Lawton et al., 2010). Four of these DZ chronofacies reflect long-distance transport from extrabasinal source areas. DZ chronofacies CO-1 and CO-2 are interpreted to derive from a primary sediment source in central Colorado (USA), corroborating previously proposed long-distance sediment transport via the Aspen paleoriver. DZ chronofacies ID-1 and ID-2 are interpreted to have been delivered to the basin from central Idaho by the Idaho paleoriver. In contrast, DZ chronofacies UT-1 and UT-2 are interpreted to reflect local drainage from the Uinta Uplift south of the basin, and DZ chronofacies WY-1 is interpreted to have been sourced from the Rawlins, Granite, and Sierra Madre uplifts to the north and east via the Toya Puki paleoriver. Lateral transitions between different DZ chronofacies in some cases occur over distances as little as 5 km, implying that depositional systems carrying sand from disparate watersheds directly competed to fill available basin accommodation. The results of this study reveal a high degree of complexity of Eocene rivers that converged on the Greater Green River Basin, indicating that their deposits contain a rich record of finescale landscape evolution across much of the Laramide foreland and Cordilleran orogen. These results illustrate the need for adequate sample density when assessing basin-scale provenance and offer a cautionary consideration for researchers using sandstone (and incorporated authigenic cement) in other nonmarine basins as the basis for paleoaltimetry or detrital thermochronology studies. Ammonites of the subfamily Collignoniceratinae have been found in the Turonian Stage of Western Siberia. These findings have made it possible to substantiate the Collignoniceras woollgari zone in the Middle Turonian of this region, to recognize the ammonite dispersal features in the Arctic region, and to clarify the paleogeography of the Turonian age. Based on the occurrence frequency of Collignoniceras woollgari regulare in the boreholes in the north of Western Siberia, their penetration into the West Siberian basin through the Arctic region from the Western Interior Sea of North America is most likely. Collignoniceratinae has been identified for the first time in the Upper Turonian of the Yangoda River (west of the Yenisei–Khatanga regional trough). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The central Inner Mongolia, located at the intersection of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) and the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is crucial for deciphering the Late Palaeozoic tectonic evolution associated with the subduction and closure of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean (PAO). Our study focused on petrology, detrital zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb geochronology and whole‐rock geochemistry for the Late Carboniferous to Permian sandstones within the Shuanmazhuang, Dahongshan, Naobaogou, and Laowopu formations in Siziwang Banner, central Inner Mongolia. This comprehensive analysis shed light on the dynamic interplay between the NCC and the South Mongolia Block. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages in investigated samples mainly cluster between 250 and 2650 Ma, with significant peaks at 2.4–2.5 Ga, 1.8–2.0 Ga, 400–430 Ma, and 250–320 Ma, respectively. The geochemistry data are characterized by SiO2 contents (56.29–77.95 wt. %), Na2O / K2O ratios (0.45–1.58) and SiO2/Al2O3 ratios between 4.33 and 7.44. Moreover, they exhibit the slight enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (Rb and Ba) and the depletion in high field strength elements (Nb, Ta, Th, and U). These facts indicate that the sedimentary detritus predominantly originates from felsic sources, probably deriving from the Late Carboniferous–Permian continental island arc‐related intermediate‐acid igneous rocks, the Late Ordovician‐Silurian magmatic rocks in the Bainaimiao arc and the basements of the NCC. Furthermore, our present results also suggest that during the Early–Middle Permian, accelerating oceanic crust subduction triggered significant magmatic events in Siziwang Banner, leading to rapid uplift and the erosion of arc magmatic rocks, as well as the abundant corresponding sediments. Subsequently, the gradual convergence and eventual collision between the NCC and the Southern Mongolian Block took place at the end of the Permian, representing final closure of the PAO. The Cambrian pre-salt dolomite sequence in the Tarim Basin is a target zone of great strategic significance for hydrocarbon exploration in the basin. Using the results of the interpretation of 3D seismic data from Lunnan and 2D seismic data covering the whole basin, and based on a synthesis of outcrop data, drilling data, well logs, core data, and thin-section data, and the findings from previous studies, this paper studies the characteristics of the facies of the Middle–Lower Cambrian in the platform area in the Tarim Basin, the formation and evolution of platform margins, and the sedimentary characteristics, lithofacies, and paleogeographic characteristics of the Middle–Lower Cambrian series. Based on the types of lithofacies and the seismic facies analysis, the sedimentary facies of the Middle–Lower Cambrian strata can be classified into the five types. From bottom to top, the Middle–Lower Cambrian have experienced several development stages, including the deposition of continental shelf sediments of the Yuertusi Formation, gently sloping non-rimmed platform margin sediments of the Xiaoerbulake Formation, weakly rimmed platform margin sediments of the Wusongger and Shayilike formations, and strongly rimmed platform margin sediments of the Awatage Formation. In each stage, the platform margin shifted further east relative to its location in the previous stage. Based on these results and previous studies, the lithofacies and paleogeography maps of the Middle–Lower Cambrian in the Tarim Basin are modified, and the implications for hydrocarbon exploration in this area are discussed. The first chitinozoan assemblages from the middle–late Silurian and Early Devonian strata of the Copo Formation in the Rivadavia borehole, Salta province, Argentina, are described. The studied interval was considered deposited in an offshore shelf environment and composed of micaceous dark-gray shales with pyrrhotite intercalated with fine-grained quartzitic sandstones. Thirty-nine core samples were processed, and 11 yielded chitinozoan specimens that allowed taxonomic classification. Seven genera and 13 species were identified; four were retained in open nomenclature, and the new species Cingulochitina chacoparanaense sp. nov. is erected. Three chitinozoan assemblages were recognized: Chitinozoan assemblage I of a middle–late Silurian age, Chitinozoan assemblage II of a late Silurian age, and Chitinozoan assemblage III of a late Lochkovian (Early Devonian) age. A new upper Lochkovian chitinozoan concurrent range biozone of Cingulochitina striata and Ancyrochitina asterigis is proposed for northwestern Argentina. The chitinozoan assemblages support Gondwanan affinities from the middle Silurian to Early Devonian of the Chacoparaná Basin. Se han descripto las primeras asociaciones de quitinozoos del Silúrico medio–tardío y Devónico Temprano de la Formación Copo en el pozo Rivadavia, provincia de Salta, Argentina. El intervalo estudiado fue depositado en un ambiente marino de plataforma y está compuesto por lutitas micáceas de color gris oscuro con pirrotina e intercalaciones de areniscas cuarcíticas de grano fino. Se procesaron 39 muestras de testigo corona, de las cuales en 11 se obtuvieron especímenes de quitinozoos que permitieron el estudio taxonómico. Se identificaron siete géneros y 13 especies, cuatro de ellas en nomenclatura abierta y se creó la nueva especie Cingulochitina chacoparanaense sp. nov. Se reconocieron tres asociaciones de quitinozoos: Asociación de quitinozoos I del Silúrico medio–tardío, Asociación de quitinozoos II del Silúrico tardío, Asociación de quitinozoos III del Lochkoviano tardío (Devónico Temprano). Se propone la nueva biozona de quitinozoos, de extensión coincidente, Cingulochitina striata y Ancyrochitina asterigis para el Lochkoviano superior del noroeste argentino. Paleomagnetic records of middle Neoproterozoic (820 to 780 Ma) rocks display high amplitude directional variations that lead to large discrepancies in paleogeographic reconstructions. Hypotheses to explain these data include rapid true polar wander (TPW), a geomagnetic field geometry that deviates from a predominantly axial dipole field, a hyper‐reversing field (>10 reversals/Ma), and/or undiagnosed remagnetization. To test these hypotheses, we collected 1,057 oriented cores over a 85 m stratigraphic succession in the Laoshanya Formation (Yangjiaping, Hunan, China). High precision U‐Pb dating of two intercalated tuff layers constrain the age of the sediments between 809 and 804 Ma. Thermal demagnetization isolates three magnetization components residing in hematite which are not time‐progressive but conflated throughout the section. All samples possess a north and downward directed component in geographic coordinates at temperatures up to 660°C that is ascribed to a Cretaceous overprint. Two components isolated above 660°C reveal distinct directional clusters: one is interpreted as a depositional remanence, while the other appears to be the result of a mid‐Paleozoic (460 to 420 Ma) remagnetization, which is likely widespread throughout South China. The high‐temperature directions are subtly dependent on lithology; microscopic and rock magnetic analyses identify multiple generations of hematite that vary in concentration and distinguish the magnetization components. A comparison with other middle Neoproterozoic paleomagnetic studies in the region indicates that the sudden changes in paleomagnetic directions, used elsewhere to support the rapid TPW hypothesis (ca. 805 Ma), are better explained by mixtures of primary and remagnetized components, and/or vertical axis rotations. Plain Language Summary: Paleomagnetic directions recorded in 820 to 780 million year old rocks from South China exhibit large amplitude changes that vary rapidly, which have been interpreted to indicate extraordinarily fast motion of Earth's crust and mantle, up to 90° within a 5 million year span, with respect to the spin axis of the core. This hypothetical phenomenon, called rapid true polar wander (TPW), could be responsible for dramatic global environmental change at that time. To test this theory, we collected over 1,000 samples from a well exposed section where the incongruous directions are found. Our measurements suggest that some of the rocks acquired a new magnetic signal during a pervasive remagnetization event in South China around 440 million years ago, long after original deposition of the rocks. New hematite growth has a demagnetization spectrum that partially overlaps or completely obscures the original magnetic signal, which was previously unrecognized. This implies that rapid TPW is likely an artifact of magnetic overprinting in ancient rocks from South China. Our results suggest that South China was in a relatively stable position at high latitudes 809 to 804 million years ago. We find no evidence to support exceptionally fast continental drift or an abnormal geomagnetic field geometry during that time. The diagenetic evolution of sandstone is very complicated under the conditions of high temperatures and pressures in deep-water, deep-buried regimes, which have great influence on reservoir quality. This study investigates the typical reservoir target of Neogene deep-water, submarine-fan sandstones under high-temperature, high-pressure regimes in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea. Utilizing a thin section, scanning electron microscope (SEM), mineral geochemistry combined with burial history evolution, complex diagenetic events, and main controlling factors of the sandstone in the Neogene Meishan Formation were determined. The results show that the evolution of sandstone reservoirs is initially controlled by depositional framework compositions and subsequently modified by eogenetic and mesogenetic alterations during progressive burial. Eogenetic alterations mainly include the following: (1) mechanical compaction; (2) dissolution of feldspar; (3) low-Fe calcite cementation. Mesogenetic events were identified as the following: (1) dissolution of feldspar; (2) ferroan calcite and ankerite formation; (3) precipitation of quartz and clay mineral. Mechanical compaction is greatly influenced by the original depositional framework composition, and sandstone samples enriched in high contents of detrital clay matrix always experienced extensive mechanical compaction. Different phases of carbonate cement during different diagenetic regimes lead to continuous destruction on reservoir porosity. The dissolution of unstable feldspar minerals during eogenetic and mesogenetic environments leads to the development of secondary porosities and would enhance the quality of the reservoir. Overpressure formation is pervasively developed owing to early disequilibrium compaction and subsequent natural gas charging. Only well-sorted sandstones with low contents of detrital clay matrix could resist early mechanical compaction, lead to ample residual original porosities, and then undergo extensive mineral dissolution to generate sufficient secondary porosities. Subsequently, these porosities would be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Poor-sorted sandstones with high contents of detrital clay matrix would experience strong mechanical compaction and extensive destruction of original porosities. Thus, these sandstones are difficult to have significant dissolution and are unable to be effectively protected by overpressure formation. Therefore, the interplay between the original framework composition and the corresponding diagenetic pathways coupled with overpressure formation would result in strong reservoir heterogeneity for the deep-buried sandstones during progressive burial. The northeastern Sichuan area in the northern Yangtze margin has unique Ediacaran geological records, especially the Doushantuo Formation (DST), and become a hot research area in recent years. However, the Cryogenian-Ediacaran (C-E) boundary has not been precisely identified, which restricts the in-depth study of geological information during this crucial transitional period and is unfavorable for a systematic and complete understanding of the Yangtze Block and even the global paleogeographic pattern. This study conducted stratigraphy, sedimentology, and chronostratigraphy to establish the stratigraphic framework and sedimentary evolution of the C-E transition strata in northeastern Sichuan. The results showed that the Ediacaran sediments, without the cap dolomite, unconformably overlaid the Cryogenian sediments in the studied area. The Member II of the DST, characterized by 50e160 m of red-green sandstone (approximately equivalent to the original Chengkou "Guanyinya Formation"), directly overlaid the Cryogenian sediments and displayed a 623 ± 2.3 Ma maximum depositional age from the detrital zircon UePb dating. Regional stratigraphic correlations indicate that the C-E transition strata in northeastern Sichuan had a consistent lithological association and sedimentary sequence characteristics but differed from the Three Gorges. Typically, the upper Nantuo massive glacial diamictites transition to the icebergs rafted lonestone-bearing mudstones at the top, then change upward to DST barrier coast sandstones. The proposed DST of the northeastern Sichuan Basin was divided into three lithostratigraphic members without the regional Member I cap dolomite: (i) Member II purple-red, gray-green sandstone strata, (ii) Member III black mudstone strata, and (iii) Member IV P-Mn bearing strata. During the C-E transition, the study area experienced (i) the global deglaciation stage in the terminal Marinoan glaciation and (ii) the filling-leveling up stage with clastic rocks in the early Ediacaran. The origins and primary relationships between tectono-stratigraphic units are fundamental to the terrane concept in accretionary orogens, but they are challenging to assess in metamorphic terranes. In NW British Columbia, three tectonically bounded metamorphic suites of the Yukon-Tanana terrane formed in distinct tectonic settings, based on high-spatial-resolution geochronology and immobile trace-element geochemistry. The Florence Range suite comprises late Neoproterozoic or younger to pre-latest Devonian metasedimentary rocks derived from continental crust, 360 ± 4 Ma calc-alkaline intermediate orthogneiss, and 357 ± 4 Ma amphibolite with oceanic-island basalt composition, consistent with rifting of a continental margin. The detrital signature is dominated by late Mesoproterozoic zircon, which indicates different sources than other parts of the Yukon-Tanana terrane. The Boundary Ranges suite comprises pre-Late Devonian metasedimentary rocks derived in part from a mafic source, amphibolite derived from subduction-zone metasomatized mantle, and 369 ± 4 Ma to 367 ± 7 Ma calc-alkaline felsic to intermediate orthogneiss. The Whitewater suite comprises meta-chert, graphite-rich metapelite, and amphibolite with back-arc basin basalt composition consistent with an anoxic basin near a volcanic source. Our data indicate that the Florence Range and Boundary Ranges suites were separate until at least the Early Mississippian and may have formed a composite terrane since the Permian, whereas the relationship with the Whitewater suite is uncertain. The Cretaceous Period is a vital time interval in deciphering the evolutionary history of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the convergence of different plates and blocks across the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. A detailed stratigraphic framework and paleogeographic patterns are the basis for understanding the evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the formation of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Here, the Cretaceous stratigraphy, biota, paleogeography, and major geological events in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau are analyzed to establish an integrative stratigraphic framework, reconstruct the paleogeography during the Cretaceous Period, and decode the history of the major geological events. The Cretaceous rocks of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding area are predominantly marine deposits, with a small amount of interbedded marine-terrestrial and terrestrial conponents. The Indus-Yarlung Tsangpo Suture Zone was responsible for the deposition of deep marine sediments dominated by ophiolite suites and radiolarian silicalite. To the south, the Tethys Himalayas and Indus Basin received marine sediments of varying depths and lithology; to the north, the Xigaze and Ladakh forearc basins are also filled with marine sediments. The Lhasa Block, Karakorum Block, western Tarim Basin, and West Burma block consist of shallow marine, interbedded marine-terrestrial, and terrestrial sediments. The Qiangtang Basin and other areas are dominated by terrestrial sedimentation. The Cretaceous strata of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas are widely distributed and diversified, with abundant foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils, radiolarians, ammonites, bivalves, and palynomorphs. On the basis of integrated lithostratigraphic, biostratigraphic, geochronologic, and chemostratigraphic analyses, we proposed herein a comprehensive stratigraphic framework for the Cretaceous Period of the eastern Neo-Tethys. By analyzing the Cretaceous biota of different biogeographic zones from eastern Neo-Tethys and its surrounding areas, we reconstructed the paleobiogeography of different periods of eastern Neo-Tethys. The Cretaceous paleogeographic evolution of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas can be divided into three phases: (1) gradual breakup of the Indian Plate from the Australia-Antarctica continent and the early collision phase of the Lhasa-Qiangtang blocks (145–125 Ma); (2) northward drift of the Indian Plate and the collision phase of the Lhasa-Qiangtang blocks (125–100 Ma); (3) rapid northward drift of the Indian Plate, formation of the Tarim-Tajik-Karakorum Bay, and early uplift of the Gangdise Mountains (100–66 Ma). The Indus-Tethys Himalayan biota underwent a transition from the cold-water type in the high latitudes of the southern hemisphere to the warm-water type near the equator from the Early Cretaceous to the Mid-Cretaceous. The biodiversity and abundance of the eastern Neo-Tethys Ocean increased gradually in the Early Cretaceous, peaking in the Mid-Cretaceous, and decreased sharply during the late Late Cretaceous (late Maastrichtian). The Devonian System in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas is widely distributed, diverse in lithotypes and rich in fossils. It records the crucial processes of continuous subduction and reduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the northern hemisphere and the transformation of the Proto-Tethys Ocean into the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the southern hemisphere. Thus, it is of great significance for explaining the global paleogeographic evolution, tectonic activities and biodiversity changes during this critical period. The blocks on both sides of the southern Tienshan suture zone and the Longmu Co-Shuanghu-Changning-Menglian suture zone belong to different sedimentary systems and paleobiogeographic realms and regions, showing important tectonic paleogeographic partitioning significance. The two suture zones represent the main branches of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, respectively, and on this basis the Devonian System can be subdivided into three types: the Tienshan type, the Tethys type and the Gondwana type. Based on recent research progress on the Devonian stratigraphy and paleontology in combining provenance analysis and biotic characteristics in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas, this paper aims to establish the latest integrative stratigraphic framework and conduct paleogeographic reconstruction, providing foundation for exploring the geological evolution and dynamic mechanisms of various terranes and blocks in the northern margin of Gondwana. The results indicate that the North Qiangtang, South Qiangtang, Simao, Baoshan and Tengchong terranes, as well as the Himalaya Tethys Zone and the South China Block have affinities with the Indian Block, while the Lhasa Terrane has affinities with the Australian Block, and may be located between the South China and Australian blocks. In the Emsian (Early Devonian), the South China Block separated from the northern margin of Gondwana, a process that was accompanied by the opening of the Jinshajiang-Ailaoshan Ocean. In the Middle Devonian, the mid-oceanic ridge of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean expanded rapidly, corresponding with a global sea-level rise, the widespread development of carbonate platforms and nadir values of Devonian seawater strontium isotopes. By the Late Devonian, the Paleo-Tethys Ocean had reached a considerable size, leading to abundant occurrences of Upper Devonian radiolarian cherts in the Paleo-Tethys suture zones. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have a long and complex tectonic evolutionary history. Cratons and blocks, such as northern India, Lhasa, Qiangtang, Qaidam and Central Qilian, and their in-between orogenic belts constitute the main part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. During the Cambrian Period, most of these cratons and blocks were on the northwestern periphery of Gondwana, and were associated with the surrounding blocks, e.g. Arabian, Central Iran, Afghanistan, Tarim, Alxa, North China, South China and Sibumasu through the Proto-Tethys Ocean. The Cambrian stratigraphic sequences on these stable blocks are composed of mixed siliciclastic and carbonate rocks deposited in the shallow-water marine environments, and contain the trilobite assemblages of shelf facies. The Cambrian stratigraphic sequences in the Qilian tectonic belts, however, are characterized by the intermediate-basic igneous rocks and silicates formed in the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and contain the trilobite assemblages of deep-water slope facies. Combining with previous data, field observations and newly discovered fossils through funding by the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, the general characteristics of the Cambrian strata in different tectonic units of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have been summarized in this paper. Furthermore, efforts have been made to subdivide and correlate the Cambrian strata across these areas by utilizing available biostratigraphic and geochronological data. As a result, a comprehensive litho- and biostratigraphy chart has been compiled. Finally, from the biogeographic perspective, this paper also provides a brief overview of the Cambrian paleogeographical reconstruction of the major tectonic blocks, and discusses the problems associated with the evolution of the Proto-Tethys tectonic belt. The complex evolutionary history of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas, including the continental blocks (Indian, Lhasa, South Qiangtang, Tarim, Olongbuluk, Central Qilian, Alxa, North China, Yangtze, Central Iran and Oman) and the orogenic belts between them, has long been the frontier in Earth science research. The Cryogenian and Ediacaran strata are extensively distributed in these blocks. Specifically, relatively complete Cryogenian and Ediacaran successions have been discovered in Oman, Indian, Yangtze, and Tarim blocks, while only the Ediacaran successions have been reported in Iran, the South Qiangtang, Central Qilian, Alxa, and North China blocks. Based on previous studies together with the integration of new materials and advancement obtained through the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, this review aims to synthesize a correlative stratigraphic framework of the representative Cryogenian and Ediacaran sequences from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas. Furthermore, the Cryogenian and Ediacaran biotas and major geological events in these areas are comprehensively discussed in aspects of current research status. The results indicate that, in general, Ediacaran fossils of each area exhibit distinct features in preservation and assemblage composition, but the typical late Ediacaran fossils Cloudina and Shaanxilithes have been reported from most of these areas. In addition to the two global Cryogenian glaciations, late Ediacaran glaciogenic deposits are extensively recorded in the areas within and around the northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (including the North China, Alxa, Central Qilian, Olongbuluk, and Tarim blocks, and the North Qilian Accretionary Belt), as well as central and southern Iran. However, further research is required to determine the age, distribution, and origin of these late Ediacaran glaciogenic deposits. Meanwhile, the middle Ediacaran DOUNCE/Shuram Excursion is widely documented in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas. The available data show that, after the break-up of the Rodinia supercontinent, most of the continental blocks in the areas were located along the northern margin of East Gondwana and a few (such as North China) were located between the Gondwana and Laurentia. In general, the paleogeographic evolution of most of these blocks during the Cryogenian and Ediacaran remains disputatious, necessitating further research to resolve the controversies surrounding their paleogeographic reconstruction models during this critical time interval. The Quaternary strata on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau contain rich information about the paleoclimate and environmental evolution, record the evolution process of the Quaternary regional tectonics, paleogeography, and geomorphology of the plateau, and are extremely important areas for studying the Quaternary geological events and regional environmental evolution. According to a comprehensive analysis of the regional stratigraphic data and the development and evolution characteristics of the biota, based on the differences in the lithostratigraphic units, sedimentary characteristics, landforms, and drainage systems, the Quaternary strata on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding areas are divided into five stratigraphic regions: the Tarim region, Loess Plateau region, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region, Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau region, and India-Ganges region. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stratigraphic region is divided into seven stratigraphic sub-regions: the West Kunlun-Karakorum, Altun-Qilian Mountains, Qaidam-Hehuang, East Kunlun-Bayan Har, Qiangtang, East Xizang-West Yunnan-West Sichuan, and Gangdise-Himalayan sub-regions. This paper briefly describes the lithostratigraphic units of the seven stratigraphic sub-regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. According to the lithostratigraphic sequence and its sedimentary characteristics, stratigraphic contact relationship, formation age, and evolution of the biota in each stratigraphic sub-region, the Quaternary tectonic paleogeographic evolution of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is divided into four stages. (1) The inherited differential uplift stage since the Pliocene (2.6−1.8/1.5 Ma): the regional sedimentary differences were significant, and the stratigraphic distribution was limited, the alluvial-proluvial sandy conglomerate was widely developed along the piedmont, and fluvial and lacustrine deposits were developed in the low-lying areas between the mountains. (2) The mountain range flattening stage (1.8/1.5−1.2/0.8 Ma): the erosion unconformity surfaces around the plateau were widely distributed, large rivers were formed, and lake sediments developed in the intermountain basins and the hinterland of the plateau. (3) 1.2/0.8−0.128 Ma: the plateau continued to rise in a large range, with significant topographic differences and intensified mountain erosion. At about 0.8 Ma, the plateau uplifted above the snow line and entered the cryosphere, mountain glaciers developed, and the alpine arid environment gradually formed. (4) 0.128 Ma-: the mountains rose and erosion intensified, and intermountain basins and lakes were widely distributed. The Paleogene is a crucial period when terrestrial and marine ecosystems recovered from major disruptions and gradually approached their modern states. In the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions, the Paleogene also represents a significant phase of tectonic evolution in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau-Himalaya orogeny, reorganization of Asian climates, and evolution of biodiversity. Due to limitations in research conditions and understanding, there are still many controversies regarding stratigraphic divisions in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions In recent years, extensive studies on sedimentary petrology, magnetostratigraphy, and isotope dating have been conducted in the region. Numerous fossils have been discovered and reported, contributing to a more systematic understanding of biostratigraphy. These studies have laid a solid foundation for the comprehensive investigation of the stratigraphy, biotas and paleogeographic evolution of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding regions during the Paleogene. In this paper, we integrate recent research on fossils, isotopic dating, magnetostratigraphy, and geochemistry to refine the stratigraphic divisions and correlation framework of different tectonic units in the region, building upon previous studies. Since the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, the knowledge of Paleogene floras has gradually expanded. This paper discusses the biostratigraphic significance of extinct and newly appeared taxa based on the latest dating results of these plant species. The new understanding of fossil species such as the "Eucalyptus" and Arecaceae establishes connections between the Paleogene flora of the Qinghai-Tibetan region and the biotas of Gondwana, specifically Oceania and South America. The evolutionary history of key taxa near the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone indicates that the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates occurred approximately 65–54 Ma. Paleoelevation reconstructions, based on plant fossils, suggest that the Hengduan Mountain had already formed their current topographic pattern prior to the Early Oligocene. The warm and humid lowlands adjacent to the main suture zones in the Paleogene Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau served as the primary pathway for biota exchanges. The Permian Period was a critical time interval during which various blocks of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau have experienced profound and complex paleogeographical changes. The supercontinent Pangea was formed to its maximum during this interval, hampering a global east-to-west trending equatorial warm ocean current. Meanwhile, a semi-closed Tethys Ocean warm pool formed an eastward-opening oceanic embayment of Pangea, and became an engine fostering the evolutions of organisms and environmental changes during the Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition. Stratigraphy and preserved fossil groups have proved extremely useful in understanding such changes and the evolutionary histories of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Widely distributed Permian deposits and fossils from various blocks of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau exhibited varied characteristics, reflecting these blocks' different paleolatitude settings and drifting histories. The Himalaya Tethys Zone south to the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone, located in the northern Gondwanan margin, yields fossil assemblages characterized by cold-water organisms throughout the Permian, and was affliated to those of the Gondwanaland. Most of the exotic limestone blocks within the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone are Guadalupian (Middle Permian) to Early Triassic in age. These exotic limestone blocks bear fossil assemblages that have transitional affinities between the warm Tethys and cold Gondwanan regions, suggesting that they most probably represent seamount deposits in the Neo-Tethys Ocean. During the Asselian to Sakmarian (Cisuralian, also Early Permian), the Cimmerian microcontinents in the northern part of Gondwana preserved glacio-marine deposits of Asselian to Sakmarian, and contained typical Gondwana-type cold-water faunas. By the middle Cisuralian (∼290–280 Ma), the Cimmerian microcontinents rifted off from the Gondwanaland, and drifted northward allometrically due to the active magmatism of the Panjal Traps in the northern margin of the Indian Plate. Two slices of microcontinents are discerned as a result of such allometic drifting. The northern Cimmerian microcontinent slice, consisting of South Qiangtang, Baoshan, and Sibuma blocks, drifted relatively quickly, and preserved widespread carbonate deposits and warm-water faunas since Artinskian. By contrast, the southern Cimmerian microcontinent slice, consisting of Lhasa, Tengchong, and Irrawaddy blocks, drifted relatively slowly, and were characterized by widespread carbonate deposits containing warm-water faunas of late Kungurian to Lopingian (Late Permian). As such, these blocks rifted off from the northern Gondwanan margin since at least the Kungurian. Thus, it can be inferred that these blocks were incorperated into the low latitude, warm-water regions later than the northern Cimmerian slice. Such discrepancies in depositional sequences and paleobiogeography imply that the rifting of Cimmerian microcontinents resulted in the formation of both Meso-Tethys and Neo-Tethys oceans during the Cisuralian. By contrast, the North Qiangtang block, because of its further northern paleogeographical position, contains warm-water faunas throughout the whole Permian Period that are affiliated well with the faunas from the South China, Simao, and Indochina blocks. Together, these blocks belonged to the members of the northern Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Thus, an archipelagic paleogeographical framework divided by Paleo-, Meso-, and Neo-Tethys oceans was formed, fostering a global biodiversity centre within the Tethys warm pool. Since most of the allochthonous blocks assembling the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau were situated in the middle to high latitude regions during the Permian, they preserved most sensitive paleoclimate records of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA), the Artinskian global warming event, and the rapid warming event at the end-Permian. Therefore, sedimentological and paleontological records of these blocks are the unique window through which we can understand global evolutions of tectonic movement and paleoclimate, and their impacts on spatiotemporal distributions of comtemporaneous biotas. During the Late Palaeozoic to Early Mesozoic, the eastern segment of the Palaeo–Tethys Ocean closed, resulting in the collision and amalgamation of the South and North Hainan Islands. However, the exact location of the collision and amalgamation remains controversial. The main collision locations are the Baisha, Jiusuo–Lingshui and Changjiang–Qionghai faults. The U–Pb age of detrital zircons was used to determine the main source area of the Middle Triassic basin in the eastern part of Hainan Island and the closed position of the eastern section of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean. The U–Pb dating of detrital zircons revealed that the Middle Triassic Lingwen Formation contains four age groups: 235–258, 335–446, 766–986 and >1000 Ma. Notably, rock masses aged 248–252 Ma that were formed in a post‐orogenic tension setting have been identified in the western region of Hainan Island, whereas no igneous rocks from this period have been discovered in the eastern region. The detrital zircon samples from the Lingwen Formation revealed a peak at 249 ± 2 Ma U–Pb age, which is important evidence indicating that the Changjiang–Qionghai Fault is the product of collision between the southern and northern Hainan terranes. Affected by the bipolar subduction of the eastern segment of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean, the collision and amalgamation of the South and North Hainan terranes occurred, and experienced a post‐collision (extensional) process at ca. 249 ± 2 Ma. During the Quaternary, the Lower Volga region was typically a shallow shelf of the Caspian Sea. This region regularly and distinctively responded to sea level fluctuations by changing both sediments and biota. This region is therefore a key to understanding the history of the transgressive-regressive cycles of the Caspian Sea during the Quaternary. There is a wealth of information about the Quaternary deposits of the Lower Volga region; however, their diversity of facies, erosional processes, and fragmented sections create difficulties in stratigraphic interpretation and the development of paleogeographic models. The studied 500-m section of borehole 8 Ulan-Khol is among the few in the Caspian region that allows for the sequential reconstruction of the Quaternary history of the region in one section. These borehole data offer a unique opportunity to reconstruct transgressive-regressive cycles in Pleistocene basins located in the most southeastern part of Europe (the Caspian region). Based on biostratigraphic, sedimentological, and paleomagnetic methods, we were able to define main Early, Middle, and Late Pleistocene units, which were correlated with regional stratigraphical units. Each unit corresponds to regional paleogeographic events and sedimentation modes characterized either by basinal (brackish water) or continental conditions when lagoons and fluvial landscapes dominated. The borehole interpretation integrated with regional data demonstrates a complex history of Caspian basin development during Apsheronian time (MIS 63–20) with the presence of a strong regression in its final stage, accompanied by a previously unknown advance of the Paleo-Volga valley to the latitude of Astrakhan city and further south. This regression and the formation of the Paleo-Volga valley continued during Tyurkyanian time (MIS 19). By the end of the Tyurkyanian, the regression was followed by a transgressive stage, which culminated in Bakunian time (MIS 18–12). The Khazarian stage (MIS 11–5) of Caspian Sea development was characterized by a constant change from alluvial-marine to marine and estuarine environments. The borehole data support our earlier conclusion that the Singilian deposits separate the lower (MIS 11–7) and upper (MIS 5) Khazarian units. New data support the existence of only one transgression of the Caspian Sea during Khvalynian time (MIS 3–2); after its maximum stage the sea level gradually decreased with the formation of coastlines at several terrace levels. Due to its high deposit thickness and rich paleontological, stratigraphic and lithological information, Ulan-Khol borehole 8 can be considered a key site for the Northern Caspian area. We discuss geological and biotic aspects of the extensive Akchagylian transgression that occurred in the Caspian region of Eurasia near the Plio-Pleistocene transition, in Piacenzian and Gelasian. It is shown that the onset of the Akchagylian marine sedimentation in Western Turkmenistan (ca. 3.2 Ma) preceded that in the Kura Basin (ca. 3.0 Ma). The position of the upper boundary of the Akchagylian remains uncertain (ca. 2.1 or 1.8 Ma). The analyzed biotic content of the Akchagylian includes molluscs, microfossils (pollen, dinocysts, foraminifers), and mammals. It is noted that specific forms of the Akchagylian aquatic biota co-occur with microfossils that clearly indicate a connection with the World Ocean or related seas. The palynology of the Akchagylian time signals a directed cooling in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene with several warm and humid epochs. The Akchagylian transgression was preceded by a change of a structural-sedimentary pattern of the region. In the latest Miocene and Early Pliocene, a pre-existed longitudinal tectonic zonation of the Caucasian-Caspian segment of the Paratethys gradually changed into clearly transverse tectonic zonation. The latter was manifested in the tectonic uplift of the Greater Caucasus, its northern piedmonts and the Lesser Caucasus, and in the subsidence of the western parts of the South and Middle Caspian basins. The interplay of longitudinal and transverse tectonic features shaped the configuration of the Akchagylian brackish-water basin and controlled thickness of its deposits. It was the transverse zonation that dominated in the thickness pattern. The increasing role of the transverse zonation in the post-Akchagylian time is manifested in the magnitudes and rates of the Quaternary tectonic uplift. These parameters were calculated based on current heights of the top of the Akchagylian marine deposits in different parts of the basin. The highest magnitudes of uplift are found in the Eastern Caucasus (up to 1980 m on the NE slope and about 2500 m in the axial part) and in the west of the Lesser Caucasus in eastern Turkey (up to 1750 m). The maximum level of the Akchagylian transgression is estimated at 40–50 m above the present level of the World Ocean. We show a low probability of connection of the Akchagylian basin with the Mediterranean Sea or the Persian Gulf, and a high probability of its connection with the Arctic Ocean through the northern tributaries of the Kama River and the Pechora Basin in the NE of East European Plain. We present a detailed description of the Middle Miocene (Chokrakian and Karaganian) depositional environments of the Eastern Paratethys Sea in the southern Caspian Basin. The Chokrakian comprises a 500-m-thick succession of marls and sandstones, termed herein Javarem Formation, which formed in coastal marine environments. The lower Javarem Fm. Developed in calm lagoonal settings, indicating frequent exposure under a predominantly dry climate and occasional formation of evaporites. The upper part of the Javarem Fm. Is characterized by mixed siliciclastic-carbonatic sediments with ooids of agitated, warm, hypersaline tidal shoals. Above follows the about 500-m-thick Vashi Formation, which is correlated with the Karaganian regional stage. The formation is characterized by an alternation of reddish marls with thick sandstones and gravel beds with terrestrial gastropods, ubiquitous pedogenetic features and occasional root horizons. The depositional environment is interpreted as a floodplain with gravelly channels of an arid to semiarid climate. The successions of the Javarem and Vashi formations capture the transition from the shallow marine Iranian shelf into the northern Iranian coastal plain around 13.8 Ma, following the onset of the Miocene Climate Transition and the coinciding global sea level drop around the Langhian/Serravallian boundary. One of the most remarkable features of the central Northern Calcareous Alps (Eastern Alps, Austria) is the widespread presence of Upper Triassic deep-water carbonates (the Hallstatt facies) and Permo-Triassic evaporites resting on deep-water Middle Jurassic strata and their underlying Upper Triassic shallow-water carbonate platform successions. The Hallstatt facies and accompanying evaporites have been classically interpreted to originate either from a location south of the time-equivalent carbonate platforms, or to have been deposited in deeper water seaways within the broad platform domain. To date, this dispute has been addressed mostly through the analysis of Triassic and Jurassic facies distribution in map view, which, however, is subject to some degree of ambiguity and subjectivity. In this contribution we present, for the first time, sequentially restored regional cross-sections through the central Northern Calcareous Alps to understand the implications of the contrasting paleogeographic models. We present (a) an interpretation based on a highly allochthonous origin of the Triassic deep-water units and (b) an interpretation based on their relative autochthony in which we incorporate the potential influence of salt tectonics in the central NCA. The restored cross-sections provide a framework within which the alternative scenarios and their paleogeographic implications can be better understood. Through this analysis we propose that salt tectonics in the central NCA can provide a valid explanation for apparent inconsistencies in the relative autochthony scenario and thus constitutes a reasonable alternative to the currently accepted allochthony scenario. Based on detrital monazite dating, mineral chemistry of tourmaline and rutile, bulk rock geochemistry, modal analysis of petrographic and palaeocurrent data, this study tracks the source of quartzose sandstone within the Cretaceous succession of the Cambay Basin primarily to rocks within the Aravalli‐Delhi Fold Belt. Monazite geochronology shows predominant peaks around 506 ± 11 Ma, 905 ± 12 Ma and a minor peak at 750 ± 20 Ma, 1485 ± 30 Ma relating sediment sources to the Aravalli‐Delhi orogeny and Pan‐African orogeny. The petrographic modal analysis of the moderate‐to‐well‐sorted Himmatnagar Sandstone indicates at least 91% quartz, with minor feldspar and rock fragments. The mineral chemistry of tourmalines in Himmatnagar Sandstone matches with Li‐ and Ca‐poor granitoid, pegmatites, metapelites and quartz tourmaline rocks. The trace element content of rutiles in sandstones corresponds to metapelitic sources. Detrital monazite dates and mineral chemistry of tourmalines and rutiles pinpoint the sediment source to the South Delhi Supergroup of rocks. The dominance of rounded zircons and tourmalines and abraded quartz overgrowth in the Himmatnagar Sandstone indicate the recycling of sediments, possibly from the Marwar Supergroup. Palaeoclimatic proxies based on mineralogy and geochemistry, particularly, the high value (93–97) of mineralogical index alteration, indicate intense chemical weathering of the source rocks under humid climatic conditions. Therefore, the combination of factors, including the quartzo‐feldspathic source rocks, intense chemical weathering under humid climatic conditions and the recycling of sediments facilitated the formation of quartzose sandstone within the Himmatngar Sandstone in the Cambay Basin. The Cobar Basin, in central New South Wales, is an Early Devonian extensional basin that formed in the western Lachlan Orogen. The basin was filled with shallow- to deep-water sequences of the Cobar Supergroup and hosts small to large polymetallic deposits. Detrital zircon geochronology and whole-rock geochemical data collected from the Amphitheatre Group of the Cobar Supergroup provide constraints on the history of basin fill and illustrate the dynamic interplay between basin provenance and mineralisation, corresponding to the evolving tectonic regime. Data reveal provenance dissimilarity between the southern and northern parts of the basin. In the south, units of the Amphitheatre Group received abundant detritus from ca 430–410 Ma magmatic rocks situated to the southwest and southeast of the basin. By contrast, the northern successions were predominately sourced from recycled Ordovician basement found to the northwest, north, northeast of the basin, along with contributions associated with the Macquarie Arc. This spatial provenance variation, however, is less significant in the younger formations: the northern and southern sequences both exhibit an increase in older recycled detritus upwards with time. This reflects a progressive modification of basin paleogeography, during the transition from rift phase to sag phase. The rift-phase basin geography is characterised by fault-restricted deposition with predominant sediments derived from local proximal sources. The subsequent sag-phase subsidence exhibits a uniform depositional system with more homogenised basin input. This provenance variation is coeval with the stratigraphically controlled mineralisation features within the Amphitheatre Group successions, implying a provenance influence on mineralisation. Data suggest the different sediment source regions have produced distinct detrital mineral compositions between the major mineral-hosting and mineral-barren formations. The enrichment of some detrital minerals in the mineral-hosting units, such as feldspar, muscovite, Ti-minerals (and carbonate), is suggested to be an important factor for mineralisation in the basin. Detrital zircon geochronology and whole-rock geochemistry illustrate the history of basin fill for the Cobar Basin. Spatial and temporal variation of basin provenance reflects a modification of basin geography, corresponding to the evolving tectonic regimes. Archeological sites of ancient people have been identified on the Karelian coast of the White Sea, near the mouth of the Keret River. The aim of our studies was to determine the position of the sea shoreline, correlate archeological sites with it, date ancient settlements, and reconstruct the paleoclimatic conditions and habitats of ancient people. We analyzed the bottom sediments of five small lakes that became separated from the sea at various times during the Holocene, using a combination of Quaternary geological methods such as spore-pollen, diatoms, radiocarbon (14C), etc. New data have been obtained regarding the timing when the study area resurfaced and the possibility of its subsequent habitation by humans. We have generated q curve illustrating the relative displacement of the White Sea coastline, thus reconstructing the migration of the sea coastline. The article also presents parameters detailing the differentiated movements of various blocks of the crystalline basement along the Karelian coast of the White Sea. Additionally, we produced paleogeographic reconstructions describing the natural conditions of the habitat of ancient people and the development of the territory from the beginning of the Holocene to the present day. Our findings indicate that people likely began inhabiting this area no earlier than 6500 years ago. Furthermore, we propose that a potential catastrophic event, such as a tsunami)= resulting from an earthquake near Veliky Island and the Velikaya Salma Strait (Kandalaksha Bay), occurred no earlier than 2600–3000 years ago. IODP Site U1509 (Expedition 371), New Caledonia Trough, provides a rare latest Cretaceous–Paleocene record from offshore northern Zealandia. We present new palynomorph and benthic foraminiferal assemblage data that show a transition from a latest Cretaceous vegetated sediment source region to a fully oceanic environment in the Paleocene. Latest Cretaceous (c. 68–66 Ma) non-calcareous claystone was deposited in upper bathyal paleodepths, with abundant plant microfossils that were likely transported in a northwest direction through the Aotea Basin region. A 2–3 Myr unconformity is identified at the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. Middle early–late Paleocene (c. 63.5–56 Ma) calcareous claystone shows evidence of deepening, deposited in middle bathyal or deeper paleodepths, and terrestrial input is minor. This latest Cretaceous to Paleocene deepening trend is consistent with inferred evolution of the Aotea and Northland basins further to the east, and other sparse northern Zealandia records, which show a common pattern of post-rift transgression consistent with long-term subsidence. Site U1509 allows for biogeographic extension and modification of the New Zealand Paleocene dinoflagellate zonation, description of a new dinoflagellate and pollen species, better inference of regional paleogeography, and may provide insights into the onset of western Pacific subduction initiation. The Jurassic Zhiluo Formation in the western Ordos Basin is known for hosting economically significant sandstone-type uranium deposits. However, the understanding of sediment sources for this formation, crucial for guiding uranium exploration, has been a subject of controversy. This study aims to address this issue by presenting a systematic dataset derived from detrital zircons found in the uranium-bearing sandstones of the Zhiluo Formation. The dataset includes U‒Pb dating, trace element analyses, and in-situ Hf isotope compositions. The detrital zircons analysed are predominantly of magmatic origin, as indicated by a Th/U ratio greater than 0.4. Their U‒Pb ages can be broadly categorized into a predominant population ranging from 170 to 500 Ma, with a peak ca. 300 Ma. Additionally, there are two minor age populations: 1600–2050 Ma (peaking at ca. 1850 Ma) and 2300–2650 Ma (peaking at ca. 2500 Ma). The εHf(t) values of these zircons exhibit a range from −27 to 7, concentrating mostly from −16 to 5. Importantly, none of them aligns above the deficit mantle evolutionary line in an εHf(t) vs. age covariant diagram. A comprehensive comparison of the analytical U‒Pb ages and Hf isotopic results with previously reported data from adjacent geological units surrounding the western Ordos Basin suggests that the primary provenance supply area for the sandstones is the Alxa Block, particularly the uranium-rich felsic rocks within it. Minor contributions are inferred from the Yinshan Block and the Qilian Orogenic Belt. The northwestern region of the study appears to be the primary prospect area for uranium exploration, and we have proposed effective measures to refine the exploration target area and enhance exploration efficiency. Overall, the study provided crucial insights into deducing provenance supply areas and transport paths, with implications for uranium exploration in sedimentary basins worldwide. The first results of the U–Th–Pb isotope dating of detrital zircons (dZr, N = 130, n = 91) from the middle Danian sandstones (63.9–65.3 Ma) of the Cretaceous–Eocene Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch widely developed in the Sochi synclinorium (southern slope of the Western Caucasus) are presented. The maximum and minimum dZr age is 2973 ± 12 Ma and 318 ± 3 Ma, respectively; weighted average age of the four youngest dZr is ~322 ± 7 Ma. There are no signs of erosion products of the Jurassic magmatites involved in the structure of the Greater Caucasus and Crimean Mountains into the sedimentary basin, where the Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch was formed. The results have revealed a high degree of similarity between the provenance signals of the Danian sandstones from the Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch, some Paleogene–Neogene and Early Quaternary (Early Pleistocene) sandstones of the Western Caucasus and Western Cis-Caucasia, red-colored Upper Permian and Lower Triassic sandstones of the Moscow syneclise, as well as Late Quaternary alluvium at lower reaches of the Don and Volga rivers draining vast expanses of the Russian Plate. These facts suggest: (1) the absence of eroded mountain structures of the Greater Caucasus and Crimea in the middle Danian; (2) the main volume of detrital material composing the Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch was formed due to the recycling of Permian–Triassic and younger sequences of the Russian Plate. Databases of 3D paleoclimate model simulations are increasingly used within global biogeochemical models for the Phanerozoic Eon. This improves the accuracy of the surface processes within the biogeochemical models, but the approach is limited by the availability of large numbers of paleoclimate simulations at different pCO2 levels and for different continental configurations. In this paper we apply the Frame Interpolation for Large Motion (FILM) Deep Learning method to a set of paleoclimate model simulations to upscale their time resolution from one model run every ~25 million years to one model run every 1 million year (Myr). Testing the method on a 5 Myr time-resolution set of continental configurations confirms the accuracy of our approach when reconstructing intermediate frames from configurations separated by up to 40 Myrs. We then apply the method to upscale the paleoclimate datastructure in the SCION climate-biogeochemical model and demonstrate that upscaled outputs for global distributions of surface temperature and runoff follow a logical progression between the original keyframes. When updated to use the high-time-resolution climate datastructure, the SCION model predicts climate shifts that were not present in the original model outputs due to its previous use of wide-spaced datasets and simple linear interpolation. We conclude that a time resolution of ~10 Myr in paleoclimate simulations is likely sufficient for investigating the long-term carbon cycle, and that Deep Learning methods may be critical in attaining this time-resolution at a reasonable computational expense, as well as for developing new fully-continuous methods in which 3D continental processes--such as species distribution--are able to translate over a moving continental surface in deep time. Nonetheless, the efficacy of Deep Learning methods in interpolating runoff data, compared to that of paleogeography and temperature, is diminished by the heterogeneous distribution of runoff. As the largest intermontane basin in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), the Qaidam Basin provides unique insight into paleoclimatic change and its relationship with global change and uplift on the TP. In this study, based on morphological comparison, fossil fruit of Cyclocarya from the Early Oligocene Shangganchaigou Formation in the Qaidam Basin is assigned as Cyclocarya cf. weylandii. The discovery of Cyclocarya cf. weylandii demonstrates the occurrence of Cyclocarya in the Oligocene sediment in Qaidam Basin. This is the first record of Cyclocarya fossil of Early Oligocene Age in China and indicates that Cyclocarya has existed on the northeastern TP since at least the Early Oligocene. The living analogues of the current fossil now lives in sub-tropical China, where the East Asian Monsoon is prevalent. Integrating the new fossils and previously reported fossil remains of plants and fishes, it can be inferred that the Early Oligocene Qaidam Basin was primarily influenced by westerly circulation and had a relatively warm and humid climate, which was in sharp contrast to the present-day climate in Qaidam Basin. The Permian-Triassic transition saw extreme climatic changes that severely impacted the terrestrial ecosystem. Fossil plants, particularly fossil woods, are sensitive to climatic changes, and they, therefore, are unique materials revealing extreme environmental and climatic changes on land at that time. Abundant conifer woods were discovered in the Lopingian (Late Permian) strata of the Sunjiagou Formation in Shanxi Province, North China. The newly finding permineralized woods record the unique landscape of Lopingian North China. They represent a new conifer genus and species: Shanxiopitys zhangziensis gen. et sp. nov. Analyses of growth pattern and anatomical characteristics of the fossil woods indicate these trees grew under optimal growing conditions, and without seasonal growth cessation. However, climate signals from leaf fossils, vertebrate fossils and sedimentary evidences indicate a strongly seasonal climate in North China during the Lopingian. Thus, it is speculated that these trees likely lived in the gallery forests, which were distributed along the paleo-rivers within a seasonal landscape in the central North China block during the Lopingian. In the eastern North China Craton, the Zibo bauxitic clay deposits are situated between Permian sandstones. These deposits exhibit distinct characteristics in two horizons. The lower horizon consists of disordered kaolinite with anhedral--subhedral, rounded morphologies that indicate a detrital origin. The upper horizon, however, contains ordered kaolinite. Detrital zircon grains in the lower horizon indicate a unimodal age spectrum with a mean age of ca. 290 Ma and εHf(t) values ranging from -20.8 to -6.0. These findings suggest a continental volcanic arc source on the northern margin of the North China Craton. In contrast, detrital zircon grains in the upper section exhibit a multi- modal detrital age spectrum with significant age peaks at 2500 Ma, 1850 Ma, and 310 Ma that originates from the local basement. The zircon dating establishes a maximum depositional age of ca. 280 ± 3 Ma, which indicates denudation of the source area in the northern North China Craton during the Artinskian stage. The relative abundance of detrital kaolinite indicates a warm and humid climate during the late Artinskian (ca. 283 Ma) to Early Kungurian (ca. 280 Ma), while cold and dry conditions prevailed during the mid--late Kungurian (ca. 277 Ma). The northern North China Craton, which supplied source material to the lower section of Zibo bauxitic clay, experienced rapid uplift and exhumation and underwent intense weathering under high humidity and warm temperatures during the late Artinskian to Early Kungurian. However, the source area shifted from the north to a more central region as the climate transitioned to cold and dry conditions in the mid--late Kungurian. Considering that detrital clay formation is indicative of specific climatic conditions, the Permian bauxitic clay deposits in Zibo provide a valuable record of environmental changes during the late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA; ca. 360-260 Ma). A broad region of Mesozoic to Cenozoic tectonism along the western and central Circum-Mediterranean (CM) margins, from southern Spain (Betic Cordillera) to the northern Morocco (Rif) and Italy (Apennines), includes huge volumes of sedimentary record since the Late Paleozoic. These sediments are contemporaneous and related with the fragmentation of the Pangean supercontinent due to the rifting and progressive closure, as well as the following birth of the CM orogeny. The composition and stratigraphic relations of clastics in diverse sedimentary basins of the CM region reflect a complete record of provenance relations related to the progressive destruction of the Neotethyan Ocean and plate convergence between the two major plates of Europe and Africa, and Iberia, Adria and Mesomediterranean micrplates located between them. The changing nature of clastic wedges reflects the provenance relations from different source rocks involving obduction of the oceanic lithosphere, the uplifted Alpine-Mediterranean Chains, and the accreted previously deformed Mesomediterranean Microplate (AlKaPeCa), as well local neovolcanic sources, within the spatial and temporal evolving geo-puzzle terranes of the CM orogeny. The provenance evolution of sediment provides insights into how plate convergence and continental collision direct the sediment dispersal pathway in Cenozoic basins due to closure of eastern and southern Alpine-Tethyan remnant ocean basins and to the dual dispersal pathways from the previously born Alps and the nascent AlKaPeCa at the expenses of the previously deformed Mesomediterranean terranes. The source-to-sink relations testify episodic deformation events, diachronous Tethyan basin development, differentiate sediment provenance from exhumed and uplifted Alpine and CM orogens, and palaeogeographic rearrangement of crustal blocks along the nascent Mediterranean region. The lower age boundary of the Upper Precambrian basal sequences of the Polar Urals (Nyarovei Group) is determined on the basis of mass U–Pb (LA-ICP-MS) dating of detrital zircon. The upper boundary of the basal sequence is determined from U–Pb (LA-ICP-MS) dating of zircon from overlapping volcanic rocks of the Nemyurgan Formation. It is thus established that the Nyarovei Group formed during a narrow period in the end of the Late Riphean (~750–650 Ma). The recognition of the group as a Middle Riphean straton is erroneous. A dominant role in the formation of the Nyarovei Group was played by erosion products of adjacent blocks of crystalline rocks, the fragments of which probably include the polymetamorphic complexes in the Kharbei–Marunkeu Anticlinorium of the Polar Urals. A detailed mineralogical and geochemical study of the Otkaznoe reference section, representing a loess–soil complex confined to the Terek–Kuma Plain, has been performed. The section provides a detailed record of the history of this region in the Pleistocene. The thickness of the sediments reaches 140 m and the age can exceed 800 thousand years. One of the main tasks of the work is to demonstrate the capabilities of a set of environmental magnetism methods in combination with Mössbauer spectroscopy and mineralogical and geochemical data for paleogeographic reconstructions of natural environment and sedimentation conditions in the Pleistocene. The observed changes in the main magnetic properties in the Otkaznoe section suggest a high sensitivity of iron minerals to the changing climatic conditions during soil formation and sedimentation. Characteristic of soil horizons is an increased content of ferrimagnets. The ferrimagnetic contribution is considerably increased in paleosol (PS) horizons, reaching 80% of the total magnetic susceptibility as compared with loess horizons (50–60%). Up to six levels of paleosol development with different degrees of manifestation of the changes in mineral composition are distinguishable based on the vertical distribution of clay minerals in the studied section. An important point is the presence of chlorites in the PS horizons most likely explainable with erosion of the most weathered PS top. A noticeable increase in the content of smectite phase in PS horizons suggests a sufficient duration of soil formation. Changes in magnetic susceptibility distribution and clay mineralogy clearly identify the PS horizons and distinctly specify the Mikulino interglacial (MIS5) and Dnieper interstadial (MIS6). Weakly pronounced Bryansk paleosol belongs to the latter. The observed changes in the composition of the loess–soil complex confirm the stratigraphic constructions. The quantitative characteristics (the set of magnetic, mineralogical, and geochemical parameters) of the loess–soil complexes in the Terek–Kuma Plain are used to reconstruct the dynamics of climatic conditions in the Pleistocene and to confirm the trend of a gradual aridization during the Pleistocene. Characteristic of the epochs of interglacials, when the soil complexes were formed, is increased climate humidity as compared with glaciation stages, with the maximum aridity index IDM of 35 (annual precipitation to 700 mm) observable in the Inzhavino pedocomplex (PC4). The Late Miocene source terrane tectonic history in the southern Gulf of Mexico Basin, as informed by detrital zircon geothermochronology data, supports a detailed regional palaeogeographic reconstruction from palaeoshoreline to the deepwater Zama minibasin of the Sureste salt basin. Seismic mapping points to a trio of pathways that converge upon two entry points into the Zama minibasin, illuminating how sediment gravity flows transit a complex seascape defined by shallow salt bodies. Consideration of empirical scaling relationships within and between segments of this sediment dispersal system allows for testable predictions of Upper Miocene submarine fan-runout lengths over basin exploration areas. Distances from the reconstructed shelf-margin to the Zama wells vary around 100 km, an increase of 20% over a straight-line distance as flows likely navigated around extant salt stocks, walls and sheets. This 100-km fan length is about 40% of the reconstructed minimum palaeo-river length, within predicted ranges for smaller source-to-sink systems in tectonically active areas (25 to 50%). The estimated fan-runout distance can be extended even further basinwards, considering the contemporaneous passage of the mobile Chortis block along the Tonala shear zone, expanding the Palaeo-Rio Grijalva drainage network during the Tortonian. These Late Miocene deepwater systems linked to the Palaeo-Rio Grijalva differ substantially from onshore Mexico-sourced turbidity flows feeding into the axis of the north-trending Veracruz Trough. Textural data from wells here suggests these systems were less effective at larger grain transport and sorting. Local (intrabasinal) variations are also evident within the Zama minibasin, as well data (image logs and cores) indicate that axially oriented sediment gravity flows involved fewer high-density turbidities, depositing lower net-to-gross sandstones and thicker shales than those flowing transverse to the basin axis from a southeastern basin entry point. These interpretations will guide both local exploitation of these economic resources and could also support future exploration for analogous salt-influenced deepwater reservoir systems in the Sureste basin and globally. The prolific hydrocarbon and geothermal potential of the Cooper-Eromanga Basin has long been recognised and studied, however, the thermal history which underpins these resources has largely remained elusive. This study presents new apatite fission track and U-Pb data for eight wells within the southwestern domain of the Cooper-Eromanga Basin, from which thermal history and detrital provenance reconstructions were conducted. Samples taken from sedimentary rocks of the upper Eromanga Basin (Winton, Mackunda and Cadna-owie Formations) yield dominant Early-Cretaceous and minor Late-Permian-Triassic apatite U-Pb ages that are (within uncertainty) equivalent to corresponding fission track age populations. Furthermore, the obtained Cretaceous apatite ages correlate well with the stratigraphic ages for each analysed formation, suggesting (1) little time lag between apatite exposure in the source region and sediment deposition, and (2) that no significant (>ca. 100°C) reheating affected these formations in this region following deposition. Cretaceous apatites were likely distally sourced from an eastern Australian volcanic arc, (e.g. the Whitsunday Igneous Association), and mixed with Permian-Triassic sediment sources from the New England and/or Mossman Orogens. Deeper samples (>2000 m) from within the southwestern Cooper Basin yielded partially reset fission track ages, indicative of heating to temperatures exceeding ca. 100-80°C after deposition. The associated thermal history models are broadly consistent with previous studies and suggest that maximum temperatures were reached at ca. 100-70 Ma as a result of hydrothermal circulation correlating with high rates of sedimentation. Subsequent Late-Cretaceous-Palaeogene cooling is interpreted to reflect post magmatic thermal subsidence and cessation of hydrothermal activity, as well as potential modified rock thermal conductivity as a response to fluid flow. Five of the seven modelled wells record a Neogene heating event, the geological significance of which remains tentative but may suggest possible reactivation of the Cooper Hot Spot and associated hydrothermal circulation. The Guadalquivir Basin is the foreland basin of the Betic Cordillera (S Spain). Closest to the orogen, several thrust-top basins evolved during the Late Miocene in the central part of the cordillera. Here, we study the Upper Miocene deposits in five of these satellite basins: Montefrlo, Iznajar-Cuevas de San Marcos, Antequera, Bobadilla Estacion and Teba, in order to (1) update the stratigraphic framework, (2) infer a depositional model, (3) establish the relationship between sedimentary record and tectonic context and (4) reconstruct the palaeogeography of the area during the Late Miocene. Upper Miocene sediments mostly consist of mixed carbonate-terrigenous deposits. Facies characterization allows inferring a sedimentary model corresponding to a ramp with foreshore deposits changing to a shoal belt offshore in the inner ramp. Swaley and hummocky crossstratified deposits formed in the transition to the middle ramp, and plane parallel carbonate beds in the distal middle-outer ramp. Factory facies, dominated by rhodoliths and bryozoans, also occur in the middle-outer ramp environments. Silts and marls formed in the deepest outer ramp and basin settings respectively. Breccias accumulated at the toe of palaeocliffs and conglomerates and massive coarse sands were deposited in fluvio-deltaic systems. Conglomerates and sands were also reworked as gravity flows and redeposited offshore. Local facies include rudstones-grainstones displaying large-scale trough-cross bedding formed in a strait in Montefrlo, and marls with chalky carbonates deposited in a shallow marine, sheltered lagoon with hydromorphic soils in Bobadilla Estacion. The study basins evolved in an N-S compressive tectonic context responsible of the emersion of the main Betic reliefs. Concomitantly, E-W and ESE-WNW extension originated the main depocentres. The influence of the tectonic activity on the sedimentary infills is indicated by the presence of synsedimentary deformations and several diachronic unconformities, which are younger westward. The submarine fan with a narrow shelf is usually reactive to environmental signal propagation; however, source-to-sink functioning can be further complicated by several allogenic forcings. Here, we document the high-frequency provenance variations and different sediment delivery models recorded in the late Triassic Zhuoni fan developed in the northeastern Paleo-Tethys Ocean, mainly based on process-based sedimentological and provenance study of the Panyuan section in the West Qinling area in the northeastern margin of Tibetan Plateau. High-, low-density turbidites, hybrid event beds and hyperpycnites are distributed in the lobe-dominated submarine fan succession. Field sedimentological evidence from surrounding outcrops suggests that shelf-edge failure was the main cause of most high-and low-density turbidites with the overall absence of submarine slides or slumps, whereas the narrow shelf configuration together with late Triassic humid pulses is favourable for the occurrence of flood-related hyperpycnites in the Zhuoni fan. Detrital zircon grains (N = 6; n=123-272) generally have Palaeozoic-Mesozoic ages (ca. 350-250 Ma and 500-400 Ma) and Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic ages (ca. 2100-1750 Ma and 2600-2400 Ma), but they can be further categized into three age groups due to different proportions of Precambrian age populations. The results demonstrate that the potential source areas may include the South and North Qinling Orogenic Belt, Qilian Orogenic Belt, different segments of North China Craton and the tectonic junction area between the Qinling and Qilian Orogenic Belts. The temporal changes in provenance signals, which are reflected by both the detrital zircon age spectra and heavy mineral assemblages, indicate different contributions of those sources in response to sea-level fluctuation. It could thus give rise to temporal variations between reactive and buffered source-to-sink sediment delivery models of the Zhuoni fan, despite the overall narrow shelf configuration. The development of the lowstand Zhuoni fan was directly related to extrabasinal hyperpycnal delivery from the river mouth and its high-frequency provenance variability recorded different efficiencies of signal transfer through the onshore catchment with significantly influence of temporal storage, fluvial rejuvenation or even regional climate variability. The highstand submarine fan was thought to be formed by shelf-edge failure with sediment buffering in the shelf region, which was associated with a strong magnitude of provenance mixing. The Cretaceous lower Nanaimo Group in the Georgia Basin, Canada comprises multiple depositional phases with distinct depocentres that accumulated in a tectonically active forearc basin setting. Basal coarse-clastic strata are preserved in paleotopographic depressions and grade upwards into coal-bearing coastal plains and shallow-marine deposits. Coal-bearing and shallow-marine strata grade laterally into and are overlain by, regionally extensive mudstones and turbidites deposited in deep water. A glauconitic sandstone bed within the deep-water strata is interpreted as a condensed section and underlies a major disconformity that developed during a pause in the deposition of the lower Nanaimo Group. A second major coarse-clastic succession occurs hundreds of metres above the glauconite bed in the central Georgia Basin and comprises conglomerate, sandstone, mudstone and coal deposited in continental depositional environments. The shift in sedimentation from the northern Georgia Basin to the central Georgia Basin is interpreted to record the emergence of an island (Nanoose Uplift) in the central Georgia Basin that acted as a major sediment source to the adjacent depocentres. The stratigraphic break between the coal-bearing coarse-clastic strata in the northern Georgia Basin and the significantly younger coal-bearing coarse-clastic strata in the central Georgia Basin indicates that the lower Nanaimo Group was deposited in distinct depocentres. Between the older, coarse-clastic strata in the north and younger, coarse-clastic strata in the central Georgia Basin, we hypothesize that a major deepwater canyon system (Qualicum Canyon) existed and transferred sediment from the semi-restricted Georgia Basin to the Pacific Ocean to the west. Development of the Qualicum Canyon and exposure of the Nanoose Uplift during deposition of the younger, central coarse-clastic strata suggests that syntectonic activity drove basin uplift and erosion and this occurred throughout the deposition of the lower Nanaimo Group. The Carboniferous Yanghugou Formation in the western margin of the Ordos Basin exhibits significant potential for oil and gas exploration. However, due to the influence of complex tectonic activities, there are substantial variations in stratigraphic thickness and depositional environments across the formation. The lack of a systematic source–sink comparative study has resulted in an unclear understanding of sediment sources and paleogeographic patterns, impacting the exploration for hydrocarbon accumulations. We conducted a comprehensive study of the source–sink system characteristics and paleogeography in the research area through field outcrop observations and drilling core sampling. By utilizing detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology and geochemistry, paleocurrent directions, lithofacies types, and sedimentary features, we delve into the understanding of the source–sink systems. Four major source–sink regions in the research area were identified: the Alxa, Yinshan, Alxa–Yinshan mixed and Qilian source–sink regions. The Alxa source–sink region formed a transitional delta-barrier-island sedimentary system. The northern part of the Yinshan source–sink region developed a transitional tidal-controlled delta-tidal-flat sedimentary system, while the southern deep-water area developed a shallow marine to semi-deep marine shelf sedimentary systems. The sediments of Alxa–Yinshan mixed source–sink region were deposited in a transitional tidal-controlled delta-tidal-flat barrier-island system. The Qilian source–sink region is characterized by small tidal-controlled delta-barrier-island system. From the analysis of the source–sink systems, it is inferred that the Alxa Block and the North China Craton had already merged before deposition of the late Carboniferous Yanghugou Formation. The delta sand bodies in the Alxa–Yinshan mixed source–sink region have the highest compositional and structural maturity, the best reservoir performance, and the great exploration potential. As a hot topic in Earth sciences, the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau has accumulated a large amount of sedimentary‐related data. We constructed a dataset of detrital components for Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau from 63 peer‐reviewed publications. The dataset thus comprises 1813 Late Proterozoic to Pleistocene sandstones from 84 stratigraphic units. For each sample, we present details on reference, detrital composition, GPS, geographic location, depositional age, tectonic setting and depositional environment. It becomes a high‐quality dataset after the information on each sandstone sample was standardized and reviewed by sedimentary experts. The dataset can be used for regional geoscience studies, exploring the general laws of the source‐to‐sink process. Fission‐track (FT) thermochronological analysis of detrital apatite and zircon derived from the lower and middle Siwalik Group of the sub‐Himalaya allows the reconstruction of the long‐term exhumation history of the Higher Himalayan Crystalline (HHC) and Lesser Himalayan Sequence (LHS), and also the provenance of the Siwalik sediments. Here, we report 14 detrital apatite and zircon fission‐track (AFT/ZFT) ages of lower and middle Siwalik subgroups of the Kumaun region, northwest Himalaya. Detrital FT ages suggest that all sandstone samples were never buried below the temperature range of 90° to 100°C and remained as unreset to retain a signal of source‐area exhumation. A detrital AFT age from sandstone sample at close proximity to the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) is 4.4 ± 0.5 Ma (Pliocene time) which is completely reset and younger than the depositional age, while the detrital ZFT ages of the same sample are unrest. The AFT age represents the time of reactivation of the MBT during which ZFT ages were not affected. This study revealed that the provenances of Siwalik sediments are located majorly in the MBT hinterland areas and the nearest sources are Amritpur granite, the outer Lesser Himalayan meta‐sedimentary (LHMS) zone, Almora klippe, Ramgarh thrust sheet, and the overlying Tethyan Himalayan Sequence. These source areas can be attributed to the development of local drainage networks in the Ramganga‐Kosi drainage basin during late Miocene to Pliocene (i.e., ~9 to 4 Ma). Based on detrital FT datasets, it has been envisaged that different tectonic activities in the MBT hinterland area between Miocene and Pliocene Periods cause the tectonic upliftment and exhumation of source areas and supply the sediment to the Siwalik foreland basin. This article discusses the need for a spatial continuous model to understand the evolution of atmospheric CO2 levels and climate over geological timescales. The authors present a test of a spatial continuous model that simulates climate and silicate weathering, which is a simplified version of the carbon cycle. The results show that this model produces different results from currently available models. The authors also highlight the importance of true spatial continuous modeling and the feasibility of running such models for longer time periods. They suggest that future research should focus on improving paleogeographic reconstructions and incorporating the biogeochemical cycle into the model. [Extracted from the article]
