A guide has been developed, highlighting various sustainability criteria of solvents used in the paints and coatings industry. The guide differs from previous, pharmaceutical-industry-focused guides both in the nature of the solvents included, and in the scoring of criteria, taking into account typical paints and coatings applications. The guide scores are, inevitably, subject to change, for example, if newer routes to biobased solvents become more widespread, or as further toxicology assessments are conducted, however it is intended as a tool to inform choices at R&D stages where full LCA may not be practical. This study aims to assess the antibacterial activity of boric acid ester derived from boron mines, which is utilised as an active component in the paint industry. Multiple product variations were obtained by adding boric acid ester to the base, referred to as the reference sample, known as silk matte paint, and used as an interior paint with active substance concentrations ranging from 0.005% to 0.6%. Escherichia coli (ATCC10536) bacteria were inoculated at 78000 cfu cm−2 into samples with 0.005- 0.075% active substance, and at 24000 cfu cm−2 into samples containing 0.15- 0.6% of the active substance, and the reduction rates were determined by a mathematical equation via multivariate linear regression analysis, relating Escherichia coli reduction percentages, surface energy values, and pH measurements, including the power percentages and gloss values for the reference sample. In the automotive paint industry, the paint is attached by spraying, followed by a drying process using a baking oven process. For bumpers made from polypropylene (PP) plastic, the oven drying temperature is 80°C. The drying process is often difficult because it requires low temperatures and extended drying times. Therefore, additional raw materials (additives) are needed, which function as catalysts to speed up the drying process. Dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) is an organotin catalyst used in the paint industry. This research aimed to investigate the effect of DBTDL addition on the properties of polyurethane paint used in the automotive industry. The variables of this research include concentration, temperature, and drying time. The properties tested were hardness, adhesion, and gloss. The research method consisted of three stages, namely the preparation stage, application stage, and testing stage. The research results found that the best hardness was obtained at temperatures of 80°C and 90°C, concentrations of 0.2% and 0.3%, and drying times of 25 minutes and 30 minutes. The adhesion test showed 100% results for all samples except at temperatures of 80°C and 90°C, a concentration of 0.3%, and a drying time of 30 minutes. The gloss test results showed a value of more than 90%. From the results of hardness, adhesion, and gloss tests, it can be concluded that the best condition was achieved at a concentration of 0.2% with a drying time of 30 minutes and a temperature of 80-90°C. The paint manufacturing sector has not received sufficient attention, having its unique challenges with employee engagement, despite numerous investigations on employee engagement in several industries. This study seeks to address this deficiency by performing a targeted investigation on the levels of employee involvement within the paint manufacturing sector. This study aims to assess the level of employee involvement in the paint manufacturing industry in South Africa. This study systematically assesses the strategies and practices of employee engagement implemented by paint manufacturing companies operating in the region. This study utilises a mixed methods approach and follows an exploratory research design to accomplish its objectives. This methodology utilises many research techniques to provide a thorough understanding of the complex employee engagement processes in the paint manufacturing industry. The survey instrument, comprising of 320 questionnaires, was distributed to managerial professionals, human resource practitioners, and general employees working at paint production plants in South Africa. In addition to collecting quantitative data, interviews were undertaken to further enrich the depth of insights. The findings reveal a beneficial and interconnected link between the factors studied, suggesting a reciprocal strengthening that enhances employee engagement. Moreover, the study highlights the complex interconnection between the six aspects of employee involvement in the company environment. These characteristics jointly contribute to the fundamental aspects of employee engagement within paint manufacturing firms. Industry stakeholders should work together to develop an organisational culture that is deeply ingrained in the industry's identity and resonates with all personnel. One key remedy suggested is to conduct an employee engagement survey across the entire organisation, which will help gain a thorough understanding of engagement dynamics. This study highlights a strong association between employee engagement, departmental affiliation, racial demographics, and age groups. Therefore, organisations can improve workplace engagement by carefully taking into account the impact of departmental divisions, racial origins, and age cohorts on the overall engagement picture. One of the manufacturing industries for making solvent-based and water-based paints is located in the Cikarang area, West Java. This paint company is experiencing an increase in production due to a large number of requests for various products. The company's level of cleanliness in maintaining quality and reducing waste of operational costs is the key to the company's success in becoming an international standard company. Every year the company incurs the cost of purchasing a cleaning agent imported from Norway because it is a basic requirement in material inventory to meet customer satisfaction. The purpose of this research is to reduce the wasted costs of purchasing cleaning agents originating from imports, maintaining 5S conditions, and fulfilling customer satisfaction. The method used in this study is a combination of the lean thinking method and the most effective A3 problem-solving method which can help create consistent, clear, and structured problem-solving documentation. This research found that there is a very large cost to buy a cleaning agent in 2021 of IDR 114,331,430 which must be spent by companies in using cleaning agents. The results of this study found that there was a reduction in the cost of purchasing a cleaning agent in 2022 to IDR 4,897,900. Therefore this paint company gets operational cost savings in purchasing cleaning agent materials of 97.71%.

Huntite, a naturally occurring carbonate mineral, originates through the alteration processes of dolomite and magnesite. While its structural characteristics align with typical carbonate minerals, its distinction arises from its polyhedral conjunctiveness. The versatile utility of huntite spans several industries, including paint, flame retardant, plastic, polymer, and pharmaceutical sectors. Noteworthy among its diverse applications is its utilization as a flame-retardant additive in raw materials. In this investigation, three samples received from the Denizli region of Turkey were subjected to detailed analysis followed by an enrichment process involving mechanical attrition and sieving of 38 microns where undersize products were obtained, exhibiting 86.9% huntite for the H-1 sample and 91.9% huntite for the H-2–3 sample. The huntite concentrates were then incorporated into paint formulations with the objective of enhancing flame retardancy. A series of testing protocols were implemented to assess the quality of the resulting paints, ultimately yielding a fire-resistant paint formulation through utilizing the H-1 sample. The study aimed to determine the respiratory effects of solvents among workers in the Mauritius paint industry. A total of 388 participants were selected using simple random sampling, and were subjected to a questionnaire for data collection. Lung function test was performed using a spirometer. Multiple regression was used to analyze the relationship between hours of exposure to solvents, while adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Independent t-test was also used to identify any difference between the means of lung function tests and the two exposed groups. Male participants were found less likely exposed to solvents compared to females (AOR, 3.39, CI 1.97-5.81). Those with secondary and lower secondary education, and worked for ≤12 hours per week, had an increased likelihood of being exposed to solvents (AOR 2.95, CI 1.20-7.28) (AOR 2.48, CI 1.19-5.16). Participants who were aware of occupational hazards (AOR 0.15, CI (0.05-0.46), and have used PPE (AOR 0.14, CI 0.08-0.25) were less likely to be less exposed to solvents. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reduce the application of petroleum in automobile paint industry by replacing it with bio-based castor oil along with nano fillers to synthesize automobile base coat (BC). Design/methodology/approach: Bio-based polyurethane (PU) coating applicable in automobile BC was synthesized by using modified castor oil incorporated with nano silica (NS) and titanium-based pigment particles. The influential characteristics of the coating was studied by carrying out cross-cut tape test, abrasion resistance, pencil hardness, lap-shear, thermo gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis and acid, alkali and oil resistance tests. Findings: Incorporation of NS particles, along with titanium-based pigment particles in optimized ratio into the paint matrix, increases the mechanical, chemical and oil resistance properties and hydrophobicity of the BC, and the findings are compared with the petro-based commercial BC. Research limitations/implications: There is no significant improvement in thermal properties of the paint matrix, and it is less thermally stable than the commercial BC. Practical implications: The paint developed through this study provides a simple and practical solution to reduce the petro-based feed-stock in automobile paint industry. Paint industry wastewater is hard to treat due to its complex and changing structure. In the study, the Fenton oxidation process was used to treat this wastewater. The pH levels required for the Fenton process were obtained without any chemical addition other than Fenton's catalyst and oxidant. Reaction time, H2O2 concentration, and Fe2+ concentration were chosen as independent parameters for the experimental design employing Taguchi orthogonal arrays. These independent parameters were varied at four different levels to find out their effects on the removal efficiencies of the dependent parameters. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color were chosen as the dependent parameters. The removal efficiencies of COD and color were obtained at 69% and 98%, respectively. According to optimization studies, the degree of effect of H2O2 concentration, Fe2+ concentration, and reaction time on COD removal performance were obtained as 12.01%, 23.87%, and 21.67%, respectively. Moreover, the degree of effect on color removal performance of H2O2 concentration, Fe2+ concentration, and reaction time were obtained as 15.08%, 19.00%, and 22.42%, respectively. Furthermore, the results from this experimental optimization study show that the synergistic effect of Fenton oxidation on COD removal provides additional removal efficiency reaching 190% compared with H2O2's real oxidation potential.
