Abstract Background Cognitive impairment in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is reported in the early onset of HCV infection without hepatic cirrhosis or marked liver impairment. Methods currently available to identify the risk for early cognitive impairment in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection do not combine enough sensitivity and specificity. The present study aimed to evaluate the P 300 components of event-related potential (ERP) abnormalities as valid biomarkers for prediction and diagnosis of the cognitive impairment in newly diagnosed hepatitis C virus infection. This study is a case–control involved fifty patients newly diagnosed HCV and fifty age and sex-matched healthy controls. Assessments of cognitive functions were carried out by the Mini-mental State Examination, Wechsler Memory Scale Revised short form, and The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, in addition to estimation of the amplitude and the latency of the P300 by the event-related potentials. Results Neuropsychological scales suggested the early incidence of cognitive impairment among hepatitis C virus patients. The electrophysiological study showed significant prolongation of P300 latency and decreased amplitude in HCV patients group compared with the control group. A binary logistic regression detected that P 300 latency ≥ 369 ms was significantly accompanied by a threefold increased risk of impaired cognition (OR 3.09, 95% CI 1.59–5.72, P

This study aimed to examine the association of child physical abuse with P300 event-related potentials (ERP), and to test the mediating effect of P300 amplitude and latency in the relationship between child physical abuse and externalizing behaviors. Cross-sectional secondary data were obtained from 155 children (55.5% boys, mean age: 11.28 ± 0.57 years) who participated in the China Jintan Child Cohort Study. Children self-reported maternal and paternal physical abuse and externalizing behaviors, as well as P300 were obtained in 2013. Additionally, parents and teachers reported child externalizing behaviors in preschool in 2007. P300 were recorded during a standard novel auditory oddball task. Path analysis shows that after controlling for child sex, socioeconomic status, area of residence, IQ, and child externalizing behavior in preschool, children exposed to maternal physical abuse exhibited increased novelty P300 amplitude, which links to more externalizing behavior. Novelty P300 amplitude partially mediated the relationship between maternal physical abuse and externalizing behavior. These findings are the first to document the partial mediating effect of P300 amplitude on the abuse-externalizing relationship and are consistent with the view that physical abuse affects the attention bias to novel cues that likely places them at increased risk for the development and maintenance of externalizing behavior. Although previous researchers have shown that attention is preferentially allocated during situations involving both threat and self-relevant information, it is unclear which information type requires more cognitive resources. We compared the automatic processing of threat and self-relevant stimuli using the no-report oddball paradigm. Participants looked at images on a computer screen that displayed fighting with opponents or interacting with friends or customers. The body action of the person depicted was performed either toward the viewing participant or toward other people. Participants watched without making an explicit response, and event-related potentials were measured with electroencephalography. We found that threat (vs. self-relevant) information elicited a larger P300 amplitude, and for nonthreatening events the P300 amplitude was larger for self-relevant than other-relevant stimuli. Background: Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent chronic brain diseases worldwide and is often accompanied by cognitive impairment. Event-related potentials (ERPs) are an objectively non-invasive approach for studying information processing and cognitive functions in the brain. The P300 is an important and extensively explored late component of ERPs that has been widely applied to assess cognitive function in epilepsy in previous studies. However, consistent conclusions have not yet been reached for various reasons.Objective: We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of P300-related studies to assess the latency and amplitude of the P300 in epileptic patients.Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for eligible studies. The standard mean difference (SMD) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated as the effect size of the P300 component.Results: The main results of the present meta-analysis indicated that epileptic patients have a longer P300 latency and a lower P300 amplitude than controls. Subgroup analysis based on age group demonstrated that these differences can be observed in both children and adult patients compared with healthy controls. In addition, the P300 latency was longer in patients with the five main types of epileptic seizures than in controls.Conclusion: This study revealed that epileptic patients have abnormalities in the P300 component, which may reflect deficits in cognitive function. Thus, the P300 may be a potential objective approach for evaluating cognitive function in epileptic patients.

Tinnitus is conscious auditory perception without corresponding external stimuli resulting from neuronal activity along auditory pathway either in peripheral or central auditory system. The exact origin, pathophysiologic pathway and its treatment is still under exploration. The main risk factor is hearing loss, but can occur in patients with normal hearing. Auditory brainstem response test helps to objectify this subjective complaint and aid in locating its origin. P300 is late latency auditory evoked potential, objective marker of cognitive potential. The purpose of our study was to ascertain any significant difference in P300 latency and amplitude values in cases of sensorineural hearing loss with tinnitus when compared to controls (normal hearing subjects) and also to find any correlation between severity of tinnitus and cognition. This was a case control study conducted at the department of ENT at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi between September 2016 to March 2018. The study comprised of one hundred and six patients, out of which fifty five patients were having sensorineural hearing loss with tinnitus and fifty one patients were normal hearing subjects. General medical and audiological history and examination was done. Significant increase in P300 latency and decrease in P300 amplitude was found in sensorineural hearing loss with tinnitus cases on comparing with controls. The similar pattern of P300 values was observed on increasing severity of tinnitus and degree of hearing loss. • Examined local stimulus sequence effects on oddball P300 and RT in older adults. • High group-level stability of sequence effects within and across sessions on P300. • High reliability and stability of P300 is independent of sequence effects. • Low intra-individual reliability of stimulus sequence effects on P300. The P300 may be an individual difference marker of neuro-cognitive function, which due to age-related cognitive decline may be particularly useful in older adults. Recently, we reported effects of the local stimulus sequence in an oddball task (i.e., the number of non-targets that preceded a target) on P300 amplitude in young and older adults. The same older adults completed a second session of the task 4–8 months after the first session. Here, we examined the effect of the stimulus sequence on the between- and within-session reliability and stability of P300 amplitude and RT, and their intertrial variability, in this sample of older adults. The sequence effects – an inverted U-shape effect of the number of standards preceding a target on parietal P300, and a linear effect on frontal P300 - were stable within and across sessions on the group level. Within individuals, P300 amplitude at frontal and parietal electrodes was generally very reliable and stable, mostly independently of sequence effects, encouraging its use as an individual difference marker of neuro-cognitive function in older adults. However, measures of the strength of the sequence effects themselves showed unacceptable reliability, speaking against their use as individual difference markers, at least in older adults. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects in both children and adults leading to poor executive functioning and quality of life. However, very little study focuses on neuroimaging and psychophysiology in the adults with ADHD. This preliminary study aimed to report neuroimaging and psychophysiology outcomes in the adults with ADHD. Participants in this study consisted of three groups: unaffected fathers of offspring with ADHD, adults with ADHD, and matched controls, were enrolled. A psychological battery was used in order to assess the participants’ cool cognitive function. Levels of dopaminergic activity were assessed by using the single positron emission computed tomography (SPECT) with [99mTc] TRODAT-1. In a pilot test for further study, the Iowa gambling test in a mock functional MRI was conducted. Molecular neuroimaging indicated the pivotal role of dopaminergicactivity altered a swellas functional brain imaging demonstrated difference between cool and hot executive functions. Using the Event-Related Potentials (ERP), the P300 amplitude of adults with ADHD was found to be lower than healthy group. In conclusions, Neuroimaging and psychophysiology outcome were effectively identified in adult with ADHD. Further study of neuroendocrinological factors might be related.

This study investigated the association between working memory capacity (WMC), P300 amplitude and latency, and their relation to speech identification in noise (SiN) in individuals with sensorineural hearing impairment (HI). Twenty adults (mean age=58 years) were recruited and their WMC was measured using a reading span task. SiN was evaluated using the clinical Quick speech-in-noise test. Auditory P300 latency and amplitude, which are known to index information processing, were recorded using a conventional oddball paradigm. WMC was significantly correlated with P300 latency, but was not associated with P300 amplitude (before or after controlling for age and magnitude of HI). In addition, SiN was not significantly correlated with WMC, P300 latency, or amplitude. P300 using tonal stimuli may be a good measure of speed of information processing and attentional control within the working memory system; however, it does not appear to be related to SiN in adults with HI.
