Agredano-Torres, M., et al., A new spherical tokamak, the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART), is currently being designed at the University of Seville. The goal of the machine is to achieve a toroidal field of 1 T, a plasma current of 500 kA and a pulse length of 500 ms for a plasma with a major radius of 0.4 m and minor radius of 0.25 m. This contribution presents the design of the coils and power supplies of the machine. The design foresees a central solenoid, 12 toroidal field coils and 8 poloidal field coils. Taking the current waveforms for these set of coils as starting point, each of them has been designed to withstand the Joule heating during the tokamak operation time. An analytical thermal model is employed to obtain the cross sections of each coil and, finally, their dimensions and parameters. The design of flexible and modular power supplies, based on IGBTs and supercapacitors, is presented. The SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART) is a new spherical device that is currently being designed at the University of Seville. SMART is a compact machine with a plasma major radius (R) greater than 0.4 m, plasma minor radius (a) greater than 0.2 m, an aspect ratio (A) over than 1.7 and an elongation (k) of more than 2. It will be equipped with 4 poloidal field coils, 4 divertor field coils, 12 toroidal field coils and a central solenoid. The heating system comprises of a Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) of 600 kW and an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) of 6 kW for pre-ionization. SMART has been designed for a plasma current (I) of 500 kA, a toroidal magnetic field (B) of 1 T and a pulse length of 500 ms preserving the compactness of the machine. The free boundary equilibrium solver code FIESTA [1] coupled to the linear time independent, rigid plasma model RZIP [2] has been used to calculate the target equilibria taking into account the physics goals, the required plasma parameters, vacuum vessel structures and power supply requirements. We present here the final design of the SMART vacuum vessel together with the Finite Element Model (FEM) analysis carried out to ensure that the tokamak vessel provides high quality vacuum and plasma performance withstanding the electromagnetic j×B loads caused by the interaction between the eddy currents induced in the vessel itself and the surrounding magnetic fields. A parametric model has been set up for the topological optimization of the vessel where the thickness of the wall has been locally adapted to the expected forces. Merging compression is an efficient and robust method for plasma start-up which can achieve both high plasma current and high temperatures at fusion relevant densities. It involves the formation of plasma around two in-vessel poloidal field coils followed by a magnetic reconnection event after which the plasma can be compressed. In this paper we extrapolate from START/MAST experimental data to predict the performance of ST40 (currently under construction). In our analysis we found that induced eddy currents within passive elements greatly affected the scenario.

The first operational phase of ST40, a new R0 = 0.4 m high field spherical tokamak, took place in early 2018. Its results are presented in [ 1 ]. During these first operations, the device was run in a reduced configuration, but all the main components of control and data flow were already in place. ST40 operations are controlled by two systems: Machine Control System (MCS) and Plasma Control System (PCS). MCS is responsible for the 24/7 monitoring and control of the ST40 plant, whereas PCS controls the tokamak during a pulse using feedforward and feedback controllers. All the acquired data is stored in an MDSplus database.

Experiments on NSTX and MAST have shown the thermal energy confinement time in spherical tokmaks (STs), , to have a stronger toroidal field and weaker plasma current dependence than in conventional large aspect ratio tokamaks. These scalings were derived for single machines both of which are similarly sized, consequently the NSTX and MAST scaling laws do not include a size dependence, and so cannot be used to extrapolate the performance of future STs. Using physics-based dimensional arguments we extend the NSTX scaling to include a size scaling. We also resolve a colinearity problem specific to NSTX data by assuming core transport is gyro-Bohm like. The resulting scaling has approximately zero beta dependence, a typical collisionality dependence, and a relatively weak safety factor dependence: . With the exception of the safety factor, all exponents are consistent with recent experiments in large aspect ratio tokamaks. This apparent difference between STs and large aspect ratio tokamaks is consistent with MAST and NSTX results. We have considered the implications of the scaling for pilot plants and reactors and find it may be possible to develop more compact reactors based on the ST approach.

The position of passive stabilisation has been optimised for the low aspect ratio tokamak ST40. We find that passive stabilisation is most effective when conductors are placed near the plasma's x-point, and the combined effect of having both inboard and outboard passive stabilisation significantly reduces the vertical instability growth rate. The growth rate can be further decreased by cooling the passive conductors down to 80 K. Two concepts for passive stabilisation are considered, passive plates and passive coils, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. Both concepts involve connecting the upper and lower conductors in an 'anti-symmetric' manner, which prevents large currents from being induced.

Tokamak Energy Ltd, UK, is developing spherical tokamaks using high temperature superconductor magnets as a possible route to fusion power using relatively small devices. We present an overview of the development programme including details of the enabling technologies, the key modelling methods and results, and the remaining challenges on the path to compact fusion.

In their pioneering paper [1] Stambaugh et al developed the Peng-Hicks concept [2] of a fusion reactor based on a solid copper centre-post Spherical Tokamak (ST). Using the promising results from the START experiment [3], they produced a vision for a path to Fusion Power. This path had two elements: the ability to produce high fusion gain from an ST, and equally importantly, the ability to demonstrate this in a small (and therefore low cost) pilot plant device. In this paper we review various attempts to pursue this vision, and try to elucidate why success has not yet been achieved. However we show that the advent of high temperature superconductors (HTS) may overcome some of the problems, and we suggest a revised version of the small, low entry cost route to Fusion Power.

In reply to the Comment by Biel et al (2016 Nucl. Fusion 57 038001) on our recent papers Costley et al (2015 Nucl Fusion 55 033001) and Costley (2016 Nucl. Fusion 56 066003), we point out that the fusion triple product, nTτ E, and fusion power gain, Q fus, cannot be expressed solely in terms of independent engineering design variables such as major radius, R, and toroidal field, B; output performance variables such as normalised beta, β N, safety factor, q, and fusion power P fus, have to be invoked. Further, we show that the density limit has the effect of largely cancelling the size dependence in nTτ E and Q fus, which would otherwise be present, when these parameters are expressed in terms of P fus. Considerations of engineering aspects are also briefly discussed.

Numerical studies have been made to improve the performance of the central column of a superconducting spherical tokamak fusion pilot plant. The assumed neutron shield includes concentric layers of tungsten carbide and water. The relative thickness of the water layers was varied and a minimum power deposition was found at about 17% of water. It was found advantageous to have an approximately 1.7 times thicker water layer next to the core and a similarly thinner layer next to the plasma. The use of tungsten boride instead of tungsten carbide was shown to make an improvement especially if placed close to the central superconducting core, the inner layer alone reducing the power deposition by 29%. Engineering features such as a central steel tie-bar, an insulating thermal vacuum gap, a wall gap next to the plasma and knowledge of the vertical energy distribution are essential to a successful design and their effects on the power deposition are shown in an appendix. The results have been fitted to model distributions and incorporated into the Tokamak Energy System Code, which can then give predictions of the power deposition as a function of other parameters such as the plasma major radius and the maximum magnetic field permitted on the superconductors.

In reply to the news story "Smaller fusion reactors could deliver big gains" (March p12), which refers to a study led by Alan Costley of the UK firm Tokamak Energy.

It is generally accepted that the route to fusion power involves large devices of ITER scale or larger. However, we show, contrary to expectations, that for steady state tokamaks operating at fixed fractions of the density and beta limits, the fusion gain, Qfus, depends mainly on the absolute level of the fusion power and the energy confinement, and only weakly on the device size. Our investigations are carried out using a system code and also by analytical means. Further, we show that for the two qualitatively different global scalings that have been developed to fit the data contained in the ITER ELMy H-mode database, i.e. the normally used beta-dependent IPB98y2 scaling and the alternative beta-independent scalings, the power needed for high fusion performance differs substantially, typically by factors of three to four. Taken together, these two findings imply that lower power, smaller, and hence potentially lower cost, pilot plants and reactors than currently envisaged may be possible. The main parameters of a candidate low power (?180?MW), high Qfus (?5), relatively small (?1.35?m major radius) device are given.

A key challenge in designing a fusion power plant is to manage the heat deposition into the central core containing superconducting toroidal field coils. Spherical tokamaks have limited space for shielding the central core from fast neutrons produced by fusion and the resulting gamma rays. This paper reports a series of three-dimensional computations using the Monte Carlo N-particle code to calculate the heat deposition into the superconducting core. For a given fusion power, this is considered as a function of plasma major radius R0, core radius rsc and shield thickness d. Computations over the ranges 0.6 m ≤ R0 ≤ 1.6 m, 0.15 m ≤ rsc ≤ 0.25 m and 0.15 m ≤ d ≤ 0.4 m are presented. The deposited power shows an exponential dependence on all three variables to within around 2%. The additional effects of source profile, the outer shield and shield material are all considered. The results can be interpolated to 2% accuracy and have been successfully incorporated into a system code. A possible pilot plant with 174 MW of fusion is shown to lead to a heat deposition into the superconducting core of order 30 kW. An estimate of 1.7 MW is made for the cryogenic plant power necessary for heat removal, and of 88 s running time for an adiabatic experiment where the heat deposition is absorbed by a 10 K temperature rise.

This paper presents results of studies of fast particles (ions and alpha particles) in a steady-state compact fusion neutron source (CFNS) and a compact spherical tokamak (ST) reactor with Monte-Carlo and Fokker–Planck codes. Full-orbit simulations of fast particle physics indicate that a compact high field ST can be optimized for energy production by a reduction of the necessary (for the alpha containment) plasma current compared with predictions made using simple analytic expressions, or using guiding centre approximation in a numerical code. Alpha particle losses may result in significant heating and erosion of the first wall, so such losses for an ST pilot plant have been calculated and total and peak wall loads dependence on the plasma current has been studied. The problem of dilution has been investigated and results for compact and big size devices are compared.

The SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART) device is a new compact (plasma major radius R≥0.40 m, minor radius a≥0.20 m, aspect ratio A≥1.7) spherical tokamak, currently in development at the University of Seville. The SMART device has been designed to achieve a magnetic field at the plasma center of up to B=1.0 T with plasma currents up to I=500 kA and a pulse length up to τ=500 ms. A wide range of plasma shaping configurations are envisaged, including triangularities between −0.50≤δ≤0.50 and elongations of κ≤2.25. Control of plasma shaping is achieved through four axially variable poloidal field coils (PF), and four fixed divertor (Div) coils, nominally allowing operation in lower-single null, upper-single null and double-null configurations. This work examines phase 2 of the SMART device, presenting a baseline reference equilibrium and two highly-shaped triangular equilibria. The relevant PF and Div coil current waveforms are also presented. Equilibria are obtained via an axisymmetric Grad-Shafranov force balance solver (Fiesta), in combination with a circuit equation rigid current displacement model (RZIp) to obtain time-resolved vessel and plasma currents., The authors would like to thank the VEST team for their technical and engineering support.
