1. A model independent approach to the study of structure growth in $f(R)$ gravity

Abstract

Over the last decade, much attention has been given to the study of modified gravity theories to find a more natural explanation for the late-time acceleration of the Universe. Particular attention has focused on the so-called $f(R)$ dark energy models. Instead of focusing on a particular f(R) model, we present a completely model-independent approach to study the background dynamics and the growth of matter density perturbations for those f(R) models that mimic the $\Lambda$CDM evolution at the background level. We do this by characterising the dynamics of the gravitational field using a set of dimensionless variables and using cosmography to determine the expansion history. We then illustrate the integrity of this method by fixing the cosmography to be the same as an exact $\Lambda$CDM model, allowing us to test the solution. We compare the exact evolution of the density contrast and growth index with what one obtains from various levels of the quasi-static approximation, without choosing the form of $f(R)$ dark energy., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Rechargeable batteries that incorporate shaped three-dimensional electrodes have been shown to have increased power and energy densities for a given footprint area when compared to a conventional geometry, i.e., a planar cathode and anode that sandwich an electrolyte. Electrodes can be shaped to enable a higher loading of active material, while keeping the ion transport distance small, however, the relationship between electrical and mechanical performance remains poorly understood. A variety of electrode shapes have been explored, where the electrodes are individually shaped or intertwined with one another. Advances in manufacturing and shape and topology optimization have made such designs a reality. In this paper, we explore sinusoidal half cells and interdigitated full cells. First, we use a simple electrostatics model to understand the cell resistance as a function of shape. We focus on low-temperature conditions, where the electrolyte conductivity decreases and the governing dimensionless parameters change. Next, we use a chemo-mechanics model to examine the stress concentrations that arise due to intercalation-driven volume expansion. We show that shaped electrodes provide a significant reduction in resistance, however, they result in unfavorable stress concentrations. Overall, we find that the fully interdigitated electrodes may provide the best balance with respect to this trade-off.

3. Interpenetrated Structures for Enhancing Ion Diffusion Kinetics in Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices.

Abstract

The architectural design of electrodes offers new opportunities for next-generation electrochemical energy storage devices (EESDs) by increasing surface area, thickness, and active materials mass loading while maintaining good ion diffusion through optimized electrode tortuosity. However, conventional thick electrodes increase ion diffusion length and cause larger ion concentration gradients, limiting reaction kinetics. We demonstrate a strategy for building interpenetrated structures that shortens ion diffusion length and reduces ion concentration inhomogeneity. This free-standing device structure also avoids short-circuiting without needing a separator. The feature size and number of interpenetrated units can be adjusted during printing to balance surface area and ion diffusion. Starting with a 3D-printed interpenetrated polymer substrate, we metallize it to make it conductive. This substrate has two individually addressable electrodes, allowing selective electrodeposition of energy storage materials. Using a Zn//MnO2 battery as a model system, the interpenetrated device outperforms conventional separate electrode configurations, improving volumetric energy density by 221% and exhibiting a higher capacity retention rate of 49% compared to 35% at temperatures from 20 to 0 °C. Our study introduces a new EESD architecture applicable to Li-ion, Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, etc.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a density-based topology optimization framework to design porous electrodes for maximum energy storage. We simulate the full cell with a model that incorporates electronic potential, ionic potential, and electrolyte concentration. The system consists of three materials, namely pure liquid electrolyte and the porous solids of the anode and cathode, for which we determine the optimal placement. We use separate electronic potentials to model each electrode, which allow interdigitated designs. As the result, a penalization is required to ensure that the anode and cathode do not touch, i.e. causing a short circuit. We compare multiple 2D designs generated for different fixed conditions, e.g. material properties. A 3D design with complex channel and interlocking structure is also created. All optimized designs are far superior to the traditional monolithic electrode design with respect to energy storage metrics. We observe up to 750% increase in energy storage for cases with slow effective ionic diffusion within the porous electrode.

Abstract Background Finding the balance of good postoperative analgesia while facilitiating mobility is important for a safe and satisfactory patient experience during Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). This study aimed to compare the efficacy of intrathecal morphine, adductor canal block, and their combination in optimizing pain management and postoperative recovery in TKA patients. This retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data evaluated postoperative pain scores, time to mobilisation, and length of hospital stay. Methods 1006 consecutive patients undergoing elective TKA across two large tertiary centres were included over six years. They were divided into one of four groups according to the type of analgesia received: Group N patients received no neuraxial morphine or regional block. Abstract Female development includes significant morphological changes across the breast. Yet, whether differences in breast surface area (BrSA) modify breast skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity at rest and after exercise in the heat remain unclear. We investigated the relationship between BrSA and skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity in 20 young to middle‐aged women (27 ± 8 years of age) of varying breast sizes (BrSA range: 147–502 cm2) at rest and after a submaximal run in a warm climatic chamber (32C ± 0.6C; 53% ± 1.7% relative humidity). Skin stiffness above and below the nipple and tactile sensitivity from the nipple down were measured. Associations between BrSA and both skin stiffness and tactile sensitivity at rest were determined via correlation analyses. Effects of exercise and test site were assessed by a two‐way ANOVA. Skin stiffness was positively correlated with BrSA 3 cm above the areola edge (r = 0.61, P = 0.005) and at the superior areola border (r = 0.54, P = 0.016), but not below the nipple (P > 0.05). The area 3 cm below the areola was also significantly stiffer than all other test sites (P 0.09), but it varied across the breast (i.e., the area 3 cm below the areola was more sensitive than the inferior areola edge; P = 0.018). Abstract

Abstract Recent advances in 3D printing have enabled the manufacture of porous electrodes which cannot be machined using traditional methods. With micron-scale precision, the pore structure of an electrode can now be designed for optimal energy efficiency, and a 3D printed electrode is not limited to a single uniform porosity. As these electrodes scale in size, however, the total number of possible pore designs can be intractable; choosing an appropriate pore distribution manually can be a complex task. To address this challenge, we adopt an inverse design approach. Using physics-based models, the electrode structure is optimized to minimize power losses in a flow reactor. The computer-generated structure is then printed and benchmarked against homogeneous porosity electrodes. We show how an optimized electrode decreases the power requirements by 16% compared to the best-case homogeneous porosity. Future work could apply this approach to flow batteries, electrolyzers, and fuel cells to accelerate their design and implementation.

The present study investigated the relationship between BrSA and sweat gland density and output in 22 young to middle‐aged women (28±10 years) of varying breast sizes (BrSA range: 147–561 cm2) during a submaximal run in a warm environment (32 ±0.6°C; 53 ±1.7% relative humidity). Local sweat gland density and local sweat rate (LSR) above and below the nipple and at the bra triangle were measured. Expired gases were monitored for the estimation of evaporative requirements for heat balance (Ereq, in W/m2). 10. Exploring the Identities of Pathways Educators through the Lens of Third Space Theory

Abstract

Pathways educators, who teach into university-based tertiary preparation programmes, contribute to a unique space within widening participation. Conceptualisations of pathways educators' identities would benefit from further theorisation to understand the challenges and possibilities of this role, so this was the focus of the current study. Ten pathways educators on academic contracts at a regional Australian university co-constructed concept maps and wrote reflections about what it means to be a pathways educator. These maps and reflections were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify patterns, which were then examined through a Third Space Theory lens. The findings highlighted a strong sense of pathways educators dwelling at the margins of academia, in liminal or in-between locations that are complex, nuanced, hard to define and often perceived as lower in status when compared to 'traditional' academic spaces. However, the analysis also suggested that finding a home in these fluid, unbounded, spaces might present opportunities for authentic and self-fulfilling work in the ambiguity. While institutional constraints and power imbalances are acknowledged, we also highlight potential implications for pathways educators, and other individuals in academic roles that occupy the margins, through a strength-based lens where agency is not lost but may thrive in unexpected ways.

11. A Mixed-Method Study of Parents' Views of Food and Nutrition in Australian Primary Schools

Abstract

Purpose: Schools have long been perceived as an ideal setting to support the healthy eating behaviours of children. The aim of the study was to examine the views of Australian primary school parents regarding school food and nutrition, including education, practices and policy. Design/methodology/approach: An online survey was conducted among 787 parents in March 2021, which included closed and open-ended questions. Findings: The results indicated the inconsistent implementation of policies and/or varying practices among different schools. Parents' views were slightly associated with some demographic and personal measures including their SES levels, education, age, the main language spoken at home and universalism values. Parents viewed healthy food provision through canteens, policies and informing parents, fruit and vegetable breaks and kitchen and garden programs as the main contributors to the promotion of healthy eating. They believed unhealthy options in canteens, school fairs, events and birthdays are the major contributors to the formation of unhealthy eating habits among children at schools. Results revealed the efforts to establish health promoting school food environments in Australian primary schools; however, inconsistencies and discrepancies among schools should be addressed to ensure equity among all children. Practical implications: The findings may provide directions for policymakers and school managers and can inform future reforms and initiatives in Australian primary schools and elsewhere. Originality/value: This is the first study that has examined Australian parents' views of school food policy, practices and environments using a mixed-methods design.

12. Identifying the Roles of Science Teacher Leaders in Practice

Abstract

Science teacher leaders have been identified as an important lever for the implementation of science education reform. However, science reform implementation is locally controlled and not uniform across districts; therefore, the work of STLs within a reform context can vary. In this descriptive case study, we explore the work of 11 science teacher leaders who support science education reform in a variety of organizational contexts. Through the analysis of multiple data sources, we describe the roles that these science teacher leaders take up in their work and identified how variation in these roles related to localized contexts and priorities for science education. We identified seven roles that science teacher leaders enacted in their work: activist, ambassador, collaborator, innovator, networker, organizer, and translator. We found that each science teacher leader prioritized one or two of these roles in their work, with other roles supporting these primary roles. While most science teacher leaders named some aspect of collaborator, networker, and ambassador as part of their work, only the district-level science leaders named translator. Furthermore, there were important differences across the science teacher leaders in our sample, which related to their district and/or school contexts. We end with suggestions for leveraging the existing variation in the work of science teacher leaders for designing professional development including opportunities for science teacher leaders to surface the various roles they occupy in their work and to provide choice in professional learning based on those roles.

13. The 'Tea Test' -- A Mobile Phone-Based Spectrophotometer Protocol to Introduce Biochemical Methods Independent of the Laboratory

Abstract

Providing hands-on practical education without access to laboratories during the COVID-19 pandemic has required creativity and innovation. In this paper, co-authored by academic staff and students, we describe an at-home mobile phone-based 'spectrophotometer' experiment used in an introductory undergraduate biology course. Using colour picker apps, a smartphone can be used to quantify concentration, which was used to compare the strengths of different brands of tea. The protocol is designed to be low-cost and safe to perform outside of a laboratory. Students used the methods to learn important biochemical methods such as preparing dilutions, constructing calibration curves, normalising data and testing a hypothesis. We reflect on the experience of developing and using the protocol from a staff and student perspective, which highlights the advantages of this approach in terms of student independence and inclusivity. We also suggest alternative experiments that could be performed using the protocol. We encourage biology educators to think creatively about the possibilities for using mobile phones or at-home experiments in their teaching. Our experience suggests that at-home experiments like this protocol will have value even after the pandemic is over, particularly in terms of inclusivity.

14. Ways to Improve Secondary School Teachers' Confidence in Teaching Food and Nutrition Subjects

Abstract

Teachers' self-confidence plays an important role in the successful delivery of school food and nutrition education. Their opinions of ways of improving their teaching confidence provide important insights into improving teacher support systems. This paper presents qualitative data from part of an online survey that explored Australian secondary school teachers' perceptions of their confidence in teaching food and nutrition subjects. The online survey was conducted from May to October 2017. Out of 183 teachers who completed the survey, 165 provided written comments about ways to improve teachers' confidence in teaching food and nutrition subjects. These textual data were uploaded to NVivo data management software and analysed using the template analysis technique. The suggested ways to improve the teachers' confidence included: (i) provision of more professional development opportunities, (ii) ensuring teachers possess adequate food and nutrition-related knowledge and skills, (iii) provision of more resources and time for teaching and learning, (iv) being informed about up-to-date food and nutrition-related trends, and (v) improvements in the status of food and nutrition subjects within schools. Policymakers and school administrators should see how they can facilitate these suggestions to establish more favourable teacher support systems.

Abstract

This work represents an extension of mesoscale particle-based modeling of electrophoretic deposition (EPD), which has relied exclusively on pairwise interparticle interactions described by Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. With this standard treatment, particles continuously move and interact via excluded volume and electrostatic pair potentials under the influence of external fields throughout the EPD process. The physics imposed by DLVO theory may not be appropriate to describe all systems, considering the vast material, operational, and application space available to EPD. As such, we present three modifications to standard particle-based models, each rooted in the ability to dynamically change interparticle interactions as simulated deposition progresses. This approach allows simulations to capture charge transfer and/or irreversible adsorption based on tunable parameters. 21. Australian Teachers' Perceptions and Experiences of Food and Nutrition Education in Primary Schools: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Teacher delivered food and nutrition education (FNE) can be effective in improving children's food literacy and eating habits. However, teachers are known to face some barriers to the delivery of FNE globally. To obtain a deeper understanding of Australian primary school teachers' experiences and views, 17 teachers were interviewed. The results of the thematic analysis showed that teachers acknowledged the importance of FNE and were willing to include more FNE content into their teaching. We also identified the FNE topics taught, resources used, their teaching partners, and barriers encountered. The discussion presents strategies to overcome these barriers.

Highlights A new and compact device configuration was created with two interpenetrated, individually addressable electrodes, allowing precise control over the geometric features and interactions between the electrodes. The interpenetrated electrode design improves ion diffusion kinetics in electrochemical energy storage devices by shortening the ion diffusion length and reducing ion concentration inhomogeneity. The device with interpenetrated electrodes outperformed the traditional separate electrode configuration, enhancing both volumetric energy density and capacity retention rate.

23. The use of a protein network analysis to explore the complexity of early skin inflammation after oronasal mask application- A pilot study

Abstract Medical devices, such as non-invasive ventilation masks, save lives in health care settings but can be a cause of tissue injuries due to the pressure and shear loads on skin and soft tissue. These pressure injuries could be painful for the individual and cause a significant economic impact on healthcare providers. In the etiology of device related pressure ulcers, inflammation plays an important role. However, the exact nature and timing of inflammatory biomarker upregulation is still unknown in the early stages of skin damage. This study aimed to explore the inflammatory profile of vulnerable skin sites following non-invasive mask application on a convenience sample of eleven hospital patients. Seventy-one inflammatory proteins were explored from sebum sampled at the skin surface after oronasal mask application. A multivariate analysis to investigate differences between loaded and control site was conducted, with a protein network analysis used to explore interactions in the early inflammation. The study revealed that 21 cytokines and chemokines were important for the separation between loaded and control site. These proteins were associated with remodeling of tissue, vascular wound healing and/or cell death.

Abstract Background Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Life Rooms initiative is an established and successful model of integrating arts and culture within NHS provision. In the face of COVID-19, the Life Rooms was restructured to provide a full suite of online resources. Following the lifting of restrictions, in-person arts provision returned to the Life Rooms sites. Additional evidence in respect of the impact on mental health and wellbeing of the return to in-person arts and cultural activities provided by the Life Rooms, as well as the relative merits of online and in-person arts and cultural activities, is needed to inform future planning around in-person, online, and/or hybrid provision. Methods Interviews with practitioners delivering cultural and creative courses at the Life Rooms (n = 8) and users of the Life Rooms (n = 5) were conducted to explore the impact of the return to in-person arts provision at the Life Rooms, as well as the merits of online and in-person arts provision. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results Three overarching themes were identified: ‘Provision, access, and reach’; ‘Value of arts and creativity’; and ‘Challenges with the Life Rooms model in the new normal’. The findings demonstrate the critical role of arts and cultural provision in providing stigma-free environments to reconnect the vulnerable and isolated. As re-engagement remained slow, there is a need to be responsive to hesitation around re-engaging in-person. The Life Rooms online learning offer remained vital for those who are vulnerable or otherwise unable to access in-person activities. Conclusions As our findings show a demand for maintaining online provision that enables accessibility together with in-person provision that boosts community connectedness, ensuring continued online access alongside in-person delivery should be prioritised. As mental health demands could continue to grow in coming years as the pandemic evolves, in-person arts engagement could have an important role in meeting mental health needs.

Yet, high‐loading MnO2 often suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics, especially in non‐aqueous electrolytes. The non‐uniform deposition of MnO2 on a porous current collectors also makes it difficult to fully utilize the active materials at high mass loading. Here, a 3D printed graded graphene aerogel (3D GA) that contains sparsely separated exterior ligaments is developed to create large open channels for mass transport as well as densely arranged interior ligaments providing large ion‐accessible active surface. The unique structural design homogenizes the thickness of electro deposited MnO2 even at an ultrahigh mass loading of ≈70 mg cm−2. The electrode achieves a remarkable volumetric capacity of 29.1 mA h cm−3 in the non‐aqueous electrolyte. A Li‐ion hybrid capacitor device assembled with a graded 3D GA/MnO2 cathode and graded 3D GA/VOx anode exhibits a wide voltage window of 0–4 V and a superior volumetric energy density of 20.2 W h L−1. The findings offer guidance on 3D printed electrode design for supporting ultrahigh loading of active materials and developments of high energy density energy storage devices.

Abstract

This study reports part of a larger study that explores three technologies--Padlet, video-embedded quizzes and Google docs and their effectiveness for enhancing pre-service teachers' (PSTs) learning engagement in online mathematics education. The data reported in this study are a survey, learning analytics and observation data. We found that Padlet heightened PSTs' social and collaborative engagement, and these dimensions were further enhanced in Google Docs activities. PST's cognitive engagement was enhanced through adding quizzes based on lecture videos. This study contributes to selecting relevant technologies to enhance PSTs' engagement in online learning in general and in mathematics education more specifically.

Abstract

IntroductionPublic concern for the mental health of university students has been rising over recent years. Newly arising stressors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic could contribute to further mental health burden for students. This study aimed to understand the mental health status of university students at an early stage in the pandemic and to identify academic, non-academic, and COVID-19-related predictors of common mental health difficulties at this time.MethodsThis study examined how academic and non-academic predictors relate to common mental health difficulties using a cross-sectional sample of university students (n = 3817).ResultsThere were high levels of depression and anxiety during the pandemic, with more than 50% experiencing levels above the clinical cut offs. Academic stress, social isolation, intolerance of uncertainty, and more negative attitudes towards remote teaching and learning predicted higher levels of depression and anxiety. University identification predicted lower levels of depression whereas receiving a diagnosis of COVID-19 was associated with higher levels of depression.DiscussionThis study identified COVID-19-related factors that uniquely contributed to students’ distress during the pandemic, over and above social connectivity variables. As COVID-19 factors, such as the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, may have driven an increase in distress levels among students, these findings provide insights that could help universities and policymakers develop targeted interventions to support the mental health and well-being of university students during future crises.

Abstract

Abstract Women continue to be under‐represented in thermoregulatory research despite their undergoing unique physiological changes across the lifespan. This study investigated the biophysical, thermo‐physiological, and perceptual determinants of cool‐seeking behaviour during exercise in younger and older women. Eleven younger (25 ± 5 years; 1.7 ± 0.1 m; 63.1 ± 5.2 kg) and 11 older women (53 ± 6 years; 1.7 ± 0.1 m; 65.4 ± 13.9 kg) performed a 40‐min incremental cycling test in a thermoneutral environment (22 ± 1.7°C; 36 ± 4% relative humidity). Throughout the test, participants freely adjusted the temperature of a cooling probe applied to their wrists to offset their thermal discomfort. We continuously recorded the probe–wrist interface temperature to quantify participants’ cool‐seeking behaviour. We also measured changes in participants’ rate of metabolic heat production, core and mean skin temperatures, and skin wetness. Finally, we body‐mapped participants’ skin heat, cold and wetness sensitivity. Our results indicated that: (1) older and younger women exhibited similar onset and magnitude of cool‐seeking behaviour, despite older women presented reduced autonomic heat‐dissipation responses (i.e., whole‐body sweat losses); (2) older women's thermal behaviour was less determined by changes in core temperature (this being a key driver in younger women), and more by changes in multiple thermo‐physiological and biophysical parameters (i.e., physical skin wetness, temperature and heat production); (3) older women did not present lower regional skin thermal and wetness sensitivity than younger women. We conclude that predictions of female cool‐seeking behaviours based on thermo‐physiological variables should consider the effects of ageing. These findings are relevant for the design of wearable cooling systems and sports garments that meet the thermal needs of women across the lifespan.

Abstract

Background The long-term outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalisation in individuals with pre-existing airway diseases are unknown. Methods Adult participants hospitalised for confirmed or clinically suspected COVID-19 and discharged between 5 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 were recruited to the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 (PHOSP-COVID) study. Participants attended research visits at 5 months and 1 year post discharge. Clinical characteristics, perceived recovery, burden of symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with pre-existing airway disease (i.e., asthma, COPD or bronchiectasis) were compared to the non-airways group. Results A total of 615 out of 2697 (22.8%) participants had a history of pre-existing airway diseases (72.0% diagnosed with asthma, 22.9% COPD and 5.1% bronchiectasis). Abstract

BackgroundTranstibial prosthetic sockets are often grouped into patella tendon bearing (PTB) or total surface bearing (TSB) designs, but many variations in rectifications are used to apply these principles to an individual's personalised socket. Prosthetists currently have little objective evidence to assist them as they make design choices.AimsTo compare rectifications made by experienced prosthetists across a range of patient demographics and limb shapes to improve understanding of socket design strategies.Methodology163 residual limb surface scans and corresponding CAD/CAM sockets were analysed for 134 randomly selected individuals in a UK prosthetics service. This included 142 PTB and 21 TSB designs. The limb and socket scans were compared to determine the location and size of rectifications. Rectifications were compiled for PTB and TSB designs, and associations between different rectification sizes were assessed using a variety of methods including linear regression, kernel density estimation (KDE) and a Naïve Bayes (NB) classification.ResultsDifferences in design features were apparent between PTB and TSB sockets, notably for paratibial carves, gross volume reduction and distal end elongation. However, socket designs varied across a spectrum, with most showing a hybrid of the PTB and TSB principles. Pairwise correlations were observed between the size of some rectifications (e.g., paratibial carves; fibular head build and gross volume reduction). Conversely, the patellar tendon carve depth was not associated significantly with any other rectification, indicating its relative design insensitivity. The Naïve Bayes classifier produced design patterns consistent with expert clinician practice. For example, subtle local rectifications were associated with a large volume reduction (i.e., a TSB-like design), whereas more substantial local rectifications (i.e., a PTB-like design) were associated with a low volume reduction.Clinical implicationsThis study demonstrates how we might learn from design records to support education and enhance evidence-based socket design. The method could be used to predict design features for newly presenting patients, based on categorisations of their limb shape and other demographics, implemented alongside expert clinical judgement as smart CAD/CAM design templates.

Abstract Background Postpartum depression (PPD) is a condition that can affect any woman regardless of ethnicity, age, party, marital status, income, and type of delivery. This condition is highly prevalent worldwide. PPD, if not treated timely, can affect the maternal‐child bond and can have a detrimental impact on the future cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development of the child. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has been reported as an effective treatment of PPD in previous studies as this focuses on relationship and social support issues. Previous reviews conducted in developed nations have reported the superior efficacy of IPT in comparison to other treatment options. There is no systematic review conducted in low to middle‐income countries on the efficacy of IPT on PPD. Therefore it was necessary to undertake a systematic review to assess the effectiveness of IPT in reducing the depression among postpartum women in low and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Objectives The main aim of this systematic review was to assess the effectiveness of IPT alone or in conjunction with pharmacological therapy and/or other psychological and psychosocial interventions, in reducing depressive symptoms among women diagnosed with PPD residing in LMICs. Search Methods The systematic search encompassed several prominent databases and grey literature. Furthermore, experts specializing in the field of IPT were consulted to identify any relevant studies conducted in LMICs that fulfilled the predetermined eligibility criteria. The most recent search update was performed in July 2022. Selection Criteria The PICOS criteria were meticulously defined for this review as described. Participants: Postpartum women diagnosed with PPD in LMICs were included. Intervention: IPT either as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with pharmacological therapy was included. Comparison: any form of psychological therapy or pharmacological therapy, whether administered individually or in combination, was considered for comparison. Study designs: experimental and quasi‐experimental, factorial designs, and quantitative components (experimental, quasi‐experimental, factorial designs) of mixed methods designs were eligible to be included. Studies with single‐group study designs and qualitative studies were excluded from the review. Data Collection and Analysis Two reviewers from our team conducted a rigorous screening process to determine the eligibility of articles for inclusion. This involved an initial evaluation of titles and abstracts, followed by a comprehensive assessment of the full text of selected articles. In instances where discrepancies arose between the two reviewers, resolution was achieved through discussion or consultation with a third author to establish a consensus. Following the screening process, two team members independently extracted pertinent information and data from the studies that met the inclusion criteria. The treatment effect of the intervention, in comparison to the control group, was subsequently analyzed utilizing the fixed effects model taking into account the small number of studies. Main Results A total of 17,588 studies were identified from various databases, and 6493 duplicate studies were removed. Subsequently, 9380 studies underwent independent title and abstract screening resulting in the exclusion of 9040 studies. 345 full texts were thoroughly assessed leading to the exclusion of 341 studies, finally including 4 studies for review. The four included trials were randomized trials and comprised a total sample size of 188 women diagnosed with PPD residing in LMICs. Among these studies, three compared IPT with usual treatment, while one study compared IPT with antidepressant medications (ADMs). In terms of the providers of IPT, in one study, IPT was administered by nurses, while psychologists delivered IPT in another study. In one study, community health workers were responsible for providing IPT. However, in one study, information regarding the specific providers of IPT was not available or reported. The primary outcome measure reported in all four studies was depression, assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The geographical distribution of the studies included; one conducted in Zambia, one in Kenya, one in Pakistan, and one in Iran. Out of the four studies, three were included in the meta‐analysis, as missing data from one study could not be obtained. Based on the overall treatment effect, it was found that depression scores decreased significantly more in the IPT group compared to other interventions (usual treatment or ADMs) (standardized mean difference [SMD] −0.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] (−1.01, −0.23), Z = 3.13 (p = 0.002), χ2 = 49.49; df = 2; p

Abstract

Abstract July 2023 has been confirmed as Earth's hottest month on record, and it was characterized by extraordinary heatwaves across southern Europe. Field data collected under real heatwave periods could add important evidence to understand human adaptability to extreme heat. However, field studies on human physiological responses to heatwave periods remain limited. We performed field thermo‐physiological measurements in a healthy 37‐years male undergoing resting and physical activity in an outdoor environment in the capital of Sicily, Palermo, during (July 21; highest level of local heat‐health alert) and following (August 10; lowest level of local heat‐health alert) the peak of Sicily's July 2023 heatwave. Results indicated that ~40 min of outdoor walking and light running in 33.8°C Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) conditions (July 21) resulted in significant physiological stress (i.e., peak heart rate: 209 bpm; core temperature: 39.13°C; mean skin temperature: 37.2°C; whole‐body sweat losses: 1.7 kg). Importantly, significant physiological stress was also observed during less severe heat conditions (August 10; WBGT: 29.1°C; peak heart rate: 190 bpm; core temperature: 38.48°C; whole‐body sweat losses: 2 kg). These observations highlight the physiological strain that current heatwave conditions pose on healthy young individuals. This ecologically‐valid empirical evidence could inform more accurate heat‐health planning.

Abstract

Cancer cells influence their microenvironment by secreting factors that promote tumour growth and survival while evading immune-mediated destruction. We previously determined the expression of secreted factors in breast and oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines (MCF-7 and WHCO6, respectively) using Luminex assays. These cells were subsequently treated with low pH medium to mimic in vivo acid exposure, and the effects on cell viability, proliferation, and secretion of cytokines, chemokines and growth factors were described [1]. Here, we present the datasets from these experiments in addition to data obtained from treating cell lines with conditioned medium from apoptotic cell cultures.

Abstract

Background Pre-existing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cardiovascular risk factors have been associated with an increased risk of complications following hospitalisation with COVID-19, but their impact on the rate of recovery following discharge is not known.Objectives To determine whether the rate of patient-perceived recovery following hospitalisation with COVID-19 was affected by the presence of CVD or cardiovascular risk factors.Methods In a multicentre prospective cohort study, patients were recruited following discharge from the hospital with COVID-19 undertaking two comprehensive assessments at 5 months and 12 months. Patients were stratified by the presence of either CVD or cardiovascular risk factors prior to hospitalisation with COVID-19 and compared with controls with neither. Full recovery was determined by the response to a patient-perceived evaluation of full recovery from COVID-19 in the context of physical, physiological and cognitive determinants of health.Results From a total population of 2545 patients (38.8% women), 472 (18.5%) and 1355 (53.2%) had CVD or cardiovascular risk factors, respectively. Compared with controls (n=718), patients with CVD and cardiovascular risk factors were older and more likely to have had severe COVID-19. Full recovery was significantly lower at 12 months in patients with CVD (adjusted OR (aOR) 0.62, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.89) and cardiovascular risk factors (aOR 0.66, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.86).Conclusion Patients with CVD or cardiovascular risk factors had a delayed recovery at 12 months following hospitalisation with COVID-19. Targeted interventions to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in patients with cardiovascular disease remain an unmet need.Trail registration number ISRCTN10980107.

36. Fostering Spaces for Black Joy in STEM-Rich Making and Beyond

Abstract

What does it mean to express Black joy and loving blackness through STEM-rich making? What does it mean for Black youth in community-based, youth-focused makerspaces to express Black joy and loving blackness? We look at how Black youth alongside their facilitators co-create spaces of Black joy through making. These makerspaces are located at two local Boys and Girls Clubs in the US Midwest and the Southeast. Makerspaces are informal sites where youth are encouraged to work collaboratively while building digital and physical artifacts. As two Black female STEM educators working with Black youth we frame our work in critical race theory. Specifically we draw on the tenets of whiteness as property and counter-narratives. Using critical ethnographic methods, we explore the ways in which Black youth produce counter-narratives that disrupt whiteness as property through STEM-rich making. Data sources include fieldnotes; artifacts, such as youth work; interviews; and video recordings. The first vignette highlights how two Black girls navigate choosing and creating characters using Scratch. The second vignette focuses on a brother and sister duo who center their making on family and their shared maker identity. We then discuss the freedoms afforded to youth with flexible co-designed curriculum with facilitators and how we foster open spaces. We address this special issue's driving question by asking, How do we, as STEM facilitators, counter anti-blackness in/through STEM by fostering space for Black joy with youth in making?

37. Designing Analytics for Collaboration Literacy and Student Empowerment

Abstract

Collaboration has garnered global attention as an important skill for the 21st century. While researchers have been doing work on collaboration for nearly a century, many of the questions that the field is investigating overlook the need for students to learn how to read and respond to different collaborative settings. Existing research focuses on chronicling the various factors that predict the effectiveness of a collaborative experience, or on changing user behaviour in the moment. These are worthwhile research endeavours for developing our theoretical understanding of collaboration. However, there is also a need to centre student perceptions and experiences with collaboration as an important area of inquiry. Based on a survey of 131 university students, we find that student collaboration-related concerns can be represented across seven different categories or dimensions: Climate, Compatibility, Communication, Conflict, Context, Contribution, and Constructive. These categories extend prior research on collaboration and can help the field ensure that future collaboration analytics tools are designed to support the ways that students think about and utilize collaboration. Finally, we describe our instantiation of many of these dimensions in our collaborative analytics tool, BLINC, and suggest that these seven dimensions can be instructive for re-orienting the Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA) and collaboration analytics communities.

38. A New Era in Multimodal Learning Analytics: Twelve Core Commitments to Ground and Grow MMLA

Abstract

Multimodal learning analytics (MMLA) has increasingly been a topic of discussion within the learning analytics community. The Society of Learning Analytics Research is home to the CrossMMLA Special Interest Group and regularly hosts workshops on MMLA during the Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI). In this paper, we articulate a set of 12 commitments that we believe are critical for creating effective MMLA innovations. Moreover, as MMLA grows in use, it is important to articulate a set of core commitments that can help guide both MMLA researchers and the broader learning analytics community. The commitments that we describe are deeply rooted in the origins of MMLA and also reflect the ways that MMLA has evolved over the past 10 years. We organize the 12 commitments in terms of (i) data collection, (ii) analysis and inference, and (iii) feedback and data dissemination and argue why these commitments are important for conducting ethical, high-quality MMLA research. Furthermore, in using the language of commitments, we emphasize opportunities for MMLA research to align with established qualitative research methodologies and important concerns from critical studies.

Abstract

Abstract Background Indian adolescents exhibit unhealthy food behaviours and inactive lifestyles which increase their risk of developing obesity and associated negative health consequences. The family food environment represents a vital setting to nurture healthy lifestyle behaviours in adolescents, with parents influencing their adolescents’ dietary and physical activity behaviours. Yet, much of the existing evidence exploring parental influences predominantly focuses on mothers while fathers’ engagement in instilling healthy dietary and physical activity behaviours is understudied, more so in the context of developing economies like India. Therefore, this qualitative study was designed to understand Indian fathers’ views on instilling healthy behaviours in their children. Methods Convenience sampling along with snowball sampling techniques were employed to recruit fathers of adolescents aged 10–19 years from Kolkata city, India. Informed by the research aim and review of literature, an interview guide was developed and pre-tested. Interviews were carried out either in person or virtually (Zoom/telephone) in English/Hindi/Bengali as per the preference of the participants. All interactions were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and translated to English for the purpose of data analysis. The transcripts were analysed thematically using NVivo software program. Themes were identified using both inductive and deductive approaches. Results A total 36 fathers participated in the interviews. Seven main themes were identified: (i) Involvement of fathers in adolescent upbringing (i.e. engagement in meal preparation, food shopping, educational activities, physical activity); (ii) Family food environment (i.e. setting food rules, having meals with children, making food available); (iii) Challenges to instilling healthy behaviours in adolescents (i.e. adolescents’ sedentary lifestyle and liking for unhealthy foods); (iv) Barriers to routine involvement in adolescent upbringing (i.e. time constraints due to paid employment, poor socio-economic status); (v) Adolescent nutrition education: (vi) Dual burden of malnutrition (i.e. awareness of malnutrition, no knowledge about government-led health programs for adolescents); (vii) Paternal knowledge. Conclusions The emerging themes reveal that Indian fathers played a crucial role in instilling healthy dietary and physical activity behaviour in their adolescents through various parenting practices such as purchasing nutritious food, enforcing food rules, disseminating nutrition-related knowledge, and encouraging adolescents to participate in moderate-to-vigorous intensity outdoor sports. This provides strong support for the inclusion of fathers in sustainable family-focused lifestyle interventions to maximise the nurturing care required by adolescents as well as assist in normalising the representation of fathers in health and welfare policies designed for adolescents.

Abstract Objective: (1) To explore the feasibility of such programmes in Australia, this study examined parents’ views on free school lunch provision. (2) To examine the associations between parents’ demographic and personal characteristics and their support for free universal school lunches. Design: An online cross-sectional survey of parents. Setting: Australia, April 2021. Participants: Seven hundred and eighty-seven parents took the survey. They had a mean age of 40. The respondents were predominantly female (95 %) and had a university degree (72 %). Results: Fifty-three percentage of the respondents agreed that all students should have access to healthy and well-balanced, free school lunches. Parents were concerned about healthiness, catering, allergies and cost of school-provided school lunches. Ethnic background, universalism values and education levels were significantly associated with support for free school lunch provision. Non-native English-speaking parents were almost three times more likely to support free universal lunches in primary schools than their native English-speaking counterparts. Parents with higher universalism-concern values were more likely to endorse free lunches in primary school. However, the level of education was negatively associated with parents’ support for free school lunches. Conclusions: The survey results highlight the complexity of parental views on free school lunch provision. Parents’ concerns regarding lunches should be considered in developing school lunch programmes that meet the needs and preferences of diverse communities. These findings can be used to guide future primary school lunch provision initiatives.

Abstract

Porous electrodes are an integral part of many electrochemical devices since they have high porosity to maximize electrochemical transport and high surface area to maximize activity. Traditional porous electrode materials are typically homogeneous, stochastic collections of small scale particles and offer few opportunities to engineer higher performance. Fortunately, recent breakthroughs in advanced and additive manufacturing are yielding new methods to structure and pattern porous electrodes across length scales. These architected electrodes are emerging as a promising new technology to continue to drive improvement; however, it is still unclear which structures to employ and few tools are available to guide their design. In this work we address this gap by applying topology optimization to the design of porous electrodes. We demonstrate our framework on two applications: a porous electrode driving a steady Faradaic reaction and a transiently operated electrode in a supercapacitor. We present computationally designed electrodes that minimize energy losses in a half-cell. For low conductivity materials, the optimization algorithm creates electrode designs with a hierarchy of length scales. Further, the designed electrodes are found to outperform undesigned, homogeneous electrodes. Finally, we present three-dimensional porous electrode designs. Abstract

Actinobacteria is an ancient phylum of Gram-positive bacteria with a characteristic high GC content to their DNA. The ActinoBase Wiki is focused on the filamentous actinobacteria, such as Streptomyces species, and the techniques and growth conditions used to study them. These organisms are studied because of their complex developmental life cycles and diverse specialised metabolism which produces many of the antibiotics currently used in the clinic. ActinoBase is a community effort that provides valuable and freely accessible resources, including protocols and practical information about filamentous actinobacteria. It is aimed at enabling knowledge exchange between members of the international research community working with these fascinating bacteria. ActinoBase is an anchor platform that underpins worldwide efforts to understand the ecology, biology and metabolic potential of these organisms. There are two key differences that set ActinoBase apart from other Wiki-based platforms: [1] ActinoBase is specifically aimed at researchers working on filamentous actinobacteria and is tailored to help users overcome challenges working with these bacteria and [2] it provides a freely accessible resource with global networking opportunities for researchers with a broad range of experience in this field.

43. Learning analytics of embodied design: Enhancing synergy

Abstract

Two nascent lines of inquiry in the Learning Sciences are contributing to research and development of interactive digital resources for STEM education. One is embodied design, a research program to create theoretically driven and empirically validated technological learning environments where students ground STEM concepts in new perceptual capacity they develop through solving motor-control problems. The other is multimodal learning analytics, a methodological approach to investigating learning processes through gathering, analyzing, triangulating, and presenting data from multiple measures of students’ actions and sensations. This special issue looks at a set of articles reporting on pioneering efforts to coordinate these parallel lines of inquiry into a theoretically coherent research program informing an integrated design framework. The following editorial frames and motivates these research efforts, surveys the set of papers, and speculates on possible futures for the learning analytics of embodied design.

Abstract

ABSTRACTJohne’s disease is an infectious enteric disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) affecting ruminant species worldwide. In Project 1, an independent performance comparison ring trail was conducted between three different commercial MAP quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay services (B, C, and D) currently marketed in Great Britain by three separate laboratories against each other and against a fourth assay (A) not available commercially in Great Britain. A total of 205 individual ovine and bovine samples from five farms were analyzed to give 41 sets of pooled results (pool size five) from each laboratory according to their specific protocols. The numbers of positive pools for assays A–D were 18, 12, 11, and 1 (43.9%, 29.2%, 26.8%, and 2.4%), respectively. Assessment of interrater reliability produced a Fleiss’ kappa coefficient of 0.15, indicating very poor overall agreement between the four laboratories. Laboratories A–D diagnosed 4, 3, 2, and 1 flocks at the farm level, respectively, as MAP positive. In Project 2, 38 pooled ovine samples from 10 flocks were analyzed to compare the performance of laboratories A and B. The numbers of positive results for laboratories A and B were 24 (63.1%) and 17 (44.7%), respectively (Cohen’s kappa 0.54), indicating that laboratory A was more sensitive than B in line with results from Project 1. Variation between laboratories offering MAP qPCR assays is a significant concern, and further work is warranted to validate and standardize the performance of assays between laboratories for both ovine and bovine samples.IMPORTANCEOur study reports the findings of an inter-laboratory ring trial comparing the performance of four different quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay services for detecting Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) infection in cattle and sheep. MAP is the causative agent of Johne’s disease (also known as paratuberculosis), a significant production-limiting disease in livestock populations with a worldwide distribution. The content of this paper is significant and novel as it is the first to highlight the marked variation between the diagnostic sensitivity and reproducibility of the three principal commercial laboratories offering MAP qPCR diagnostic and screening services in Great Britain. The low sensitivity and high variability between the laboratories are of great concern and relevance to veterinary practitioners and livestock producers.

Abstract

Although great strides have been made to tackle hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs), there is a need for greater recognition of device-related pressure ulcers (DRPUs), including their causes, management and prevention. This consensus statement, an updated second edition, aims to continue raising awareness of these largely preventable injuries and, crucially, to stimulate action. DRPUs are relatively common and account for a growing proportion of HAPUs. Updated information on the incidence of DRPUs is described in chapter 1. Although it is recognised that DRPUs increase the financial burden of healthcare, there is little formal analysis of their economic impact. This needs to be addressed; robust evidence on the burden of DRPUs and the value that can be released by adopting prevention strategies is needed to help drive action. Our understanding of the pathophysiology of DRPUs has improved significantly over the past few years; this is described in chapter 2. One crucial difference between PUs and DRPUs is that body-weight forces are less significant in DRPUs, with the force being exerted from a device that is typically strapped or taped onto the body. Devices and their securement may generate high stress concentrations in tissues, leading to cell and tissue-damage pathways associated with sustained deformation. As more evidence is published on DRPUs, recurring themes are emerging, as outlined in chapter 3: The most vulnerable patients are bearing the brunt of DRPUs; paediatric and neonatal patients, and all those needing critical care are particularly susceptible. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a new high-risk population (people with severe COVID-19 infection) emerged. They are at increased risk of DRPUs because of their need for prolonged ventilatory support, especially when 'proning' Devices associated with DRPUs are often used to perform essential, life-saving functions. They include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks or endotracheal tubes. Minimising their use is clearly not an option, so practice innovation is needed Although the most common locations for DRPUs are the face, ears, lower legs and heels, any location where a device comes into close contact with the skin can be at risk. In the same vein, any device, whether needed for a medical purpose or not, has the capacity to cause injury if its use is not properly managed. Vigilance is needed for all patients. What can be done? The importance of routine risk assessment is covered in chapter 4. Although use of a validated risk assessment tool is the vital first step, this will not be enough on its own. Several steps can be taken to ensure the safe use of devices. These are described in chapter 5 and include device repositioning, cushioning with prophylactic dressings and moisture control (only where possible and clinically appropriate). Of key importance is the development of an institutional protocol and champions to ensure all necessary steps are adopted. For any of these changes to be put into practice, awareness of DRPUs needs to increase. A number of proposals are outlined in chapter 6. A change of focus among health professionals and policy makers, along with more investment in education and training, are needed. All patients being managed with a medical device must be considered as at high risk. The pandemic introduced the world to the problem of DRPUs in health professionals caused by the extended wear of personal protective equipment. Health professionals also have a right to expect institutional protocols and provision of devices that protect them from DRPUs. Cutting-edge ideas and technologies that may be available in the future are described in chapter 7. When designing new products, manufacturers of medical devices have a duty of care to investigate the risks of DRPUs associated with their products and mitigate them, wherever possible. Our developing understanding of how the design, structure and materials used in medical devices contribute to DRPUs will help us develop new solutions for tomorrow. Abstract

Porous flow-through electrodes are used as the core reactive component across electrochemical technologies. Controlling the fluid flow, species transport, and reactive environment is critical to attaining high performance. However, conventional electrode materials like felts and papers provide few opportunities for precise engineering of the electrode and its microstructure. To address these limitations, architected electrodes composed of unit cells with spatially varying geometry determined via computational optimization are proposed. Resolved simulation is employed to develop a homogenized description of the constituent unit cells. These effective properties serve as inputs to a continuum model for the electrode when used in the negative half cell of a vanadium redox flow battery. Porosity distributions minimizing power loss are then determined via computational design optimization to generate architected porosity electrodes. The architected electrodes are compared to bulk, uniform porosity electrodes and found to lead to increased power efficiency across operating flow rates and currents. The design methodology is further used to generate a scaled-up electrode with comparable power efficiency to the bench-scale systems. The variable porosity architecture and computational design methodology presented here thus offers a novel pathway for automatically generating spatially engineered electrode structures with improved power performance.

50. The evolution of atmospheric particulate matter in an urban landscape since the Industrial Revolution

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) causes 3.7 million annual deaths worldwide and potentially damages every organ in the body. The cancer-causing potential of fine particulates (PM2.5) highlights the inextricable link between air quality and human health. With over half of the world’s population living in cities, PM2.5 emissions are a major concern, however, our understanding of exposure to urban PM is restricted to relatively recent (post-1990) air quality monitoring programmes. To investigate how the composition and toxicity of PM has varied within an urban region, over timescales encompassing changing patterns of industrialisation and urbanisation, we reconstructed air pollution records spanning 200 years from the sediments of urban ponds in Merseyside (NW England), a heartland of urbanisation since the Industrial Revolution. These archives of urban environmental change across the region demonstrate a key shift in PM emissions from coarse carbonaceous ‘soot’ that peaked during the mid-twentieth century, to finer combustion-derived PM2.5 post-1980, mirroring changes in urban infrastructure. The evolution of urban pollution to a recent enhanced PM2.5 signal has important implications for understanding lifetime pollution exposures for urban populations over generational timescales.
