As humans venture deeper into space, the need for a lunar settlement, housing the first group of settlers, grows steadily. By means of new technologies such as in situ resource utilisation (ISRU) as well as computational design, this goal can be implemented in present years. Providing the first arrivals with an immediate underground habitat safe from radiation and other environmental constraints is of crucial importance to initialise a prolonged mission on the Moon. The project's proposal revolves around the idea of establishing a base which provides an immediately habitable space with the possibility for future expansion. Advanced construction methods and sustainable practices lay the groundwork for a permanent human presence, predominantly based on ISRU. This paper outlines a two-phase initiative aimed at the foundation of the Lunar Subterra, followed by an extension of the habitat above ground. Following our collaboration with the PoliSpace Sparc Student Association group, a Virtual Reality (VR) reproduction of the proposed habitat enabled quick iterative testing of the habitable space with the use of a Meta Quest 2 headset. We investigate the magnetic quantum phase-transitions in bulk correlated metals at the level of dynamical mean-field theory. To this end, we focus on the Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice as a function of temperature and electronic density, determining the different regimes of its magnetic transition - classical, quantum critical, and quantum disordered - as well as the corresponding critical exponents. Our numerical results, together with supporting mean-field derivations, demonstrate how the presence of Kohn-anomalies on the underlying Fermi surface does not only drive the quantum critical behavior above the quantum critical point, but shapes the whole phase diagram around it. Finally, after outlining the impact of different Fermi surface geometries on quantum criticality, we discuss to what extent spatial correlations beyond dynamical mean-field might modify our findings., Comment: 7 pages (including references), 3 figures

This chapter explores the practice of conducting user research studies and design assessments in virtual reality (VR). An overview of key VR hardware and software tools is provided, including game engines, such as Unity and Unreal Engine. Qualitative and quantitative research methods, along with their various synergies with VR, are likewise discussed, and some of the challenges associated with VR, such as limited sensory stimulation, are reflected upon. VR is proving particularly useful in the context of space systems development, where its utilisation offers a cost-effective and secure method for simulating extraterrestrial environments, allowing for rapid prototyping and evaluation of innovative concepts under representative operational conditions. To illustrate this, we present a case study detailing the application of VR to aid aerospace engineers testing their ideas with end-users and stakeholders during early design stages of the European Space Agency's (ESA) prospective Argonaut lunar lander. This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of VR simulations in gathering important feedback concerning the operability of the Argonaut lander in poor lighting conditions as well as surfacing relevant ergonomics considerations and constraints. The chapter concludes by discussing the strengths and weaknesses associated with VR-based user studies and proposes future research directions, emphasising the necessity for novel VR interfaces to overcome existing technical limitations.

Kac-Moody symmetric spaces have been introduced by Freyn, Hartnick, Horn and the first-named author for centered Kac-Moody groups, that is, Kac-Moody groups that are generated by their root subgroups. In the case of non-invertible generalized Cartan matrices this leads to complications that -- within the approach proposed originally -- cannot be repaired in the affine case. In the present article we propose an alternative approach to Kac-Moody symmetric spaces which for invertible generalized Cartan matrices provides exactly the same concept, which for the non-affine non-invertible case provides alternative Kac-Moody symmetric spaces, and which finally provides Kac-Moody symmetric spaces for affine Kac-Moody groups. In a nutshell, the original intention by Freyn, Hartnick, Horn and K\"ohl was to construct symmetric spaces that likely lead to primitive actions of the Kac-Moody groups; this, of course, cannot work in the affine case as affine Kac-Moody groups are far from simple. Additionally, we study the Galois descent to almost split real Kac-Moody symmetric spaces based on the theory of almost split Kac-Moody groups developed by R\'emy 2002.

Robustness is a fundamental property of machine learning classifiers required to achieve safety and reliability. In the field of adversarial robustness of image classifiers, robustness is commonly defined as the stability of a model to all input changes within a p-norm distance. However, in the field of random corruption robustness, variations observed in the real world are used, while p-norm corruptions are rarely considered. This study investigates the use of random p-norm corruptions to augment the training and test data of image classifiers. We evaluate the model robustness against imperceptible random p-norm corruptions and propose a novel robustness metric. We empirically investigate whether robustness transfers across different p-norms and derive conclusions on which p-norm corruptions a model should be trained and evaluated. We find that training data augmentation with a combination of p-norm corruptions significantly improves corruption robustness, even on top of state-of-the-art data augmentation schemes., Comment: Camera-ready version submitted to VISAPP 2024

Revived interest in lunar exploration is heralding a new generation of design solutions in support of human operations on the Moon. While space system design has traditionally been guided by prototype deployments in analogue studies, the resource-intensive nature of this approach has largely precluded application of proficient user-centered design (UCD) methods from human-computer interaction (HCI). This paper explores possible use of Virtual Reality (VR) to simulate analogue studies in lab settings and thereby bring to bear UCD in this otherwise engineering-dominated field. Drawing on the ongoing development of the European Large Logistics Lander, we have recreated a prospective lunar operational scenario in VR and evaluated it with a group of astronauts and space experts (n=20). Our qualitative findings demonstrate the efficacy of VR in facilitating UCD, enabling efficient contextual inquiries and improving project team coordination. Often in public health, we are interested in the treatment effect of an intervention on a population that is systemically different from the experimental population the intervention was originally evaluated in. When treatment effect heterogeneity is present in a randomized controlled trial, generalizing the treatment effect from this experimental population to a target population of interest is a complex problem; it requires the characterization of both the treatment effect heterogeneity and the baseline covariate mismatch between the two populations. Despite the importance of this problem, the literature for variable selection in this context is limited. In this paper, we present a Group LASSO-based approach to variable selection in the context of treatment effect generalization, with an application to generalize the treatment effect of very low nicotine content cigarettes to the overall U.S. smoking population.

Participant noncompliance, in which participants do not follow their assigned treatment protocol, often obscures the causal relationship between treatment and treatment effect in randomized trials. In the longitudinal setting, the G-computation algorithm can adjust for confounding to estimate causal effects. Typically, G-computation assumes that both 1) compliance is observed; and 2) the densities of the confounders can be correctly specified. We aim to develop a G-computation estimator in the setting where both assumptions are violated. For 1), in place of unobserved compliance, we substitute in probability weights derived from modeling a biomarker associated with compliance. For 2), we fit semiparametric models using predictive mean matching. Specifically, we parametrically specify only the conditional mean of the confounders, and then use predictive mean matching to randomly generate confounder data for G-computation. In both the simulation and application, we compare multiple causal estimators already established in the literature with those derived from our method. For the simulation, we generated data across different sample sizes and levels of confounding. For the application, we apply our method to a trial that sought to evaluate the effect of cigarettes with low nicotine on cigarette consumption (Center for the Evaluation of Nicotine in Cigarettes Project 2 - CENIC-P2).

As the space industry continues its rapid development, humanity is poised to expand beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO), seeking to establish permanent presence on the Moon and beyond. While space travel has traditionally been the domain of a small number of highly specialized professionals, a new era of human exploration, involving non-space actors and stakeholders, is now becoming a reality. In spite of this development, most space habitats are still designed for a narrow target group. This paper seeks to address this deficit by rethinking the established design approaches, typically limited to tackling engineering and challenges of human space exploration (such as radiation or hypogravity), by instead adopting an interdisciplinary "big picture" perspective encompassing social, psychological and cultural aspects of future space habitats. By elaborating and reflecting on our concept, this paper seeks to demonstrate the importance of a trans-disciplinary approach to designing thriving sustainable colonies beyond LEO. We demonstrate the potentially key role of design as mediator in advancing macro-strategies promoting thriving existence and sustainable growth. Robustness is a fundamental pillar of Machine Learning (ML) classifiers, substantially determining their reliability. Methods for assessing classifier robustness are therefore essential. In this work, we address the challenge of evaluating corruption robustness in a way that allows comparability and interpretability on a given dataset. We propose a test data augmentation method that uses a robustness distance $\epsilon$ derived from the datasets minimal class separation distance. The resulting MSCR (mean statistical corruption robustness) metric allows a dataset-specific comparison of different classifiers with respect to their corruption robustness. The MSCR value is interpretable, as it represents the classifiers avoidable loss of accuracy due to statistical corruptions. On 2D and image data, we show that the metric reflects different levels of classifier robustness. Furthermore, we observe unexpected optima in classifiers robust accuracy through training and testing classifiers with different levels of noise. While researchers have frequently reported on a significant tradeoff on accuracy when training robust models, we strengthen the view that a tradeoff between accuracy and corruption robustness is not inherent. The European Large Logistics Lander (EL3) is being designed to carry out cargo delivery missions in support of future lunar ground crews. The capacity of virtual reality (VR) to visualize and interactively simulate the unique lunar environment makes it a potentially powerful design tool during the early development stages of such solutions. Based on input from the EL3 development team, we have produced a VR-based operational scenario featuring a hypothetical configuration of the lander. Relying on HCI research methods, we have subsequently evaluated this scenario with relevant experts (n=10). Qualitative findings from this initial pilot study have demonstrated the usefulness of VR as a design tool in this context, but likewise surfaced a number of limitations in the form of potentially impaired validity and generalizability. We conclude by outlining our future research plan and reflect on the potential use of physical stimuli to improve the validity of VR-based simulations in forthcoming design activities.

Individuals can vary drastically in their response to the same treatment, and this heterogeneity has driven the push for more personalized medicine. Accurate and interpretable methods to identify subgroups that respond to the treatment differently from the population average are necessary to achieving this goal. The Virtual Twins (VT) method by Foster et al. \cite{Foster} is a highly cited and implemented method for subgroup identification because of its intuitive framework. However, since its initial publication, many researchers still rely heavily on the authors' initial modeling suggestions without examining newer and more powerful alternatives. This leaves much of the potential of the method untapped. We comprehensively evaluate the performance of VT with different combinations of methods in each of its component steps, under a collection of linear and nonlinear problem settings. Our simulations show that the method choice for step 1 of VT is highly influential in the overall accuracy of the method, and Superlearner is a promising choice. We illustrate our findings by using VT to identify subgroups with heterogeneous treatment effects in a randomized, double-blind nicotine reduction trial.

Synchronization in networks of oscillatory units is an emergent phenomenon present in various systems, such as biological, technological, and social systems. Many real-world systems have adaptive properties, meaning that their connectivities change with time, depending on the dynamical state of the system. Networks of adaptively coupled oscillators show various synchronization phenomena, such as hierarchical multifrequency clusters, traveling waves, or chimera states. While these self-organized patterns have been previously studied on all-to-all coupled networks, this work extends the investigations towards more complex networks, analyzing the influence of random network topologies for various degrees of dilution of the connectivities. Using numerical and analytical approaches, we investigate the robustness of multicluster states on networks of adaptively coupled Kuramoto-Sakaguchi oscillators against the random dilution of the underlying network topology. Further, we utilize the master stability approach for adaptive networks in order to highlight the interplay between adaptivity and topology.

Adaptive networks change their connectivity with time, depending on their dynamical state. While synchronization in structurally static networks has been studied extensively, this problem is much more challenging for adaptive networks. In this Letter, we develop the master stability approach for a large class of adaptive networks. This approach allows for reducing the synchronization problem for adaptive networks to a low-dimensional system, by decoupling topological and dynamical properties. We show how the interplay between adaptivity and network structure gives rise to the formation of stability islands. Moreover, we report a desynchronization transition and the emergence of complex partial synchronization patterns induced by an increasing overall coupling strength. We illustrate our findings using adaptive networks of coupled phase oscillators and FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with synaptic plasticity.

The increasing multiplicity of data sources offers exciting possibilities in estimating the effects of a treatment, intervention, or exposure, particularly if observational and experimental sources could be used simultaneously. Borrowing between sources can potentially result in more efficient estimators, but it must be done in a principled manner to mitigate increased bias and Type I error. Furthermore, when the effect of treatment is confounded, as in observational sources or in clinical trials with noncompliance, causal effect estimators are needed to simultaneously adjust for confounding and to estimate effects across data sources. We consider the problem of estimating causal effects from a primary source and borrowing from any number of supplemental sources. We propose using regression-based estimators that borrow based on assuming exchangeability of the regression coefficients and parameters between data sources. Borrowing is accomplished with multisource exchangeability models and Bayesian model averaging. We show via simulation that a Bayesian linear model and Bayesian additive regression trees both have desirable properties and borrow under appropriate circumstances. We apply the estimators to recently completed trials of very low nicotine content cigarettes investigating their impact on smoking behavior.

Treatment effect heterogeneity occurs when individual characteristics influence the effect of a treatment. We propose a novel approach that combines prognostic score matching and conditional inference trees to characterize effect heterogeneity of a randomized binary treatment. One key feature that distinguishes our method from alternative approaches is that it controls the Type I error rate, i.e., the probability of identifying effect heterogeneity if none exists and retains the underlying subgroups. This feature makes our technique particularly appealing in the context of clinical trials, where there may be significant costs associated with erroneously declaring that effects differ across population subgroups. TEHTrees are able to identify heterogeneous subgroups, characterize the relevant subgroups and estimate the associated treatment effects. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method using a comprehensive simulation study and illustrate our method using a nutrition trial dataset to evaluate effect heterogeneity within a patient population.

We describe a visual computing approach to radiation therapy (RT) planning, based on spatial similarity within a patient cohort. In radiotherapy for head and neck cancer treatment, dosage to organs at risk surrounding a tumor is a large cause of treatment toxicity. Along with the availability of patient repositories, this situation has lead to clinician interest in understanding and predicting RT outcomes based on previously treated similar patients. To enable this type of analysis, we introduce a novel topology-based spatial similarity measure, T-SSIM, and a predictive algorithm based on this similarity measure. We couple the algorithm with a visual steering interface that intertwines visual encodings for the spatial data and statistical results, including a novel parallel-marker encoding that is spatially aware. We report quantitative results on a cohort of 165 patients, as well as a qualitative evaluation with domain experts in radiation oncology, data management, biostatistics, and medical imaging, who are collaborating remotely., Comment: IEEE VIS (SciVis) 2019

We present a novel method for reconstructing parametric, volumetric, multi-story building models from unstructured, unfiltered indoor point clouds by means of solving an integer linear optimization problem. Our approach overcomes limitations of previous methods in several ways: First, we drop assumptions about the input data such as the availability of separate scans as an initial room segmentation. Instead, a fully automatic room segmentation and outlier removal is performed on the unstructured point clouds. Second, restricting the solution space of our optimization approach to arrangements of volumetric wall entities representing the structure of a building enforces a consistent model of volumetric, interconnected walls fitted to the observed data instead of unconnected, paper-thin surfaces. Third, we formulate the optimization as an integer linear programming problem which allows for an exact solution instead of the approximations achieved with most previous techniques. Lastly, our optimization approach is designed to incorporate hard constraints which were difficult or even impossible to integrate before. We present a comprehensive method for visualisation and quantification of the magnetic stray field of magnetic force microscopy (MFM) probes, applied to the particular case of custom-made multi-layered probes with controllable high/low magnetic moment states. The probes consist of two decoupled magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic interlayer, which results in four stable magnetic states: +/-ferromagnetic (FM) and +/-antiferromagnetic (A-FM). Direct visualisation of the stray field surrounding the probe apex using electron holography convincingly demonstrates a striking difference in the spatial distribution and strength of the magnetic flux in FM and A-FM states. In situ MFM studies of reference samples are used to determine the probe switching fields and spatial resolution. Furthermore, quantitative values of the probe magnetic moments are obtained by determining their real space tip transfer function (RSTTF). We also map the local Hall voltage in graphene Hall nanosensors induced by the probes in different states. The measured transport properties of nanosensors and RSTTF outcomes are introduced as an input in a numerical model of Hall devices to verify the probe magnetic moments. The modelling results fully match the experimental measurements, outlining an all-inclusive method for the calibration of complex magnetic probes with a controllable low/high magnetic moment., Comment: 7 Figures, 2 Tables

We propose a nonparametric variance estimator when ranked set sampling (RSS) and judgment post stratification (JPS) are applied by measuring a concomitant variable. Our proposed estimator is obtained by conditioning on observed concomitant values and using nonparametric kernel regression.
