Abstract

Abstract This study addresses environmental concerns related to construction and demolition waste (CDW), which constitutes 35–40% of global waste. It explores the potential use of recycled fine aggregates (RFA) from concrete demolition waste as a sustainable alternative to natural fine aggregates in 3D printed mortar (3DPM). By conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) and utilizing VOSviewer for bibliometric analysis, the research assesses the mechanical properties, flowability, extrudability, and buildability of RFAs in 3DPM. The analysis also highlights key trends in keywords and research distribution across different countries. The findings reveal that while RFAs in 3DPM slightly reduce compressive and flexural strengths compared to natural aggregates, they significantly contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing landfill waste and conserving natural resources. The study underscores the importance of further research to optimize RFA-based mixtures for wider application in 3D printing technologies.

Abstract

A multi-objective derived Adaptive TransDeepLabv3 (ATransDeeplabv3) with a meta-heuristic approach Electric Fish optimization (EFO) Algorithm is proposed in this paper. The Deeplabv3 network’s segmentation results are unsatisfactory when it comes to unequal sample categories and a shortage of data, but having higher segmentation accuracy for species with adequate instances. To address the issue of uneven sample categories, designed a Deeplabv3 network model that adds a Transformer encoder based on a multihead self-attention mechanism and EFO Algorithm. An Electric Fish Optimization algorithm is utilized in order to improve the effectiveness of the proposed model, and it is primarily used to maximize the accuracy and dice coefficient of the ATransDeeplabv3 by tuning the hyper parameters like number of epochs, number of steps per epoch and hidden neuron count. The suggested Adaptive TransDeepLabv3 is tested using the public domain dataset named Semantic Segmentation of Aerial Imagery and obtained an improved accuracy, dice-coefficient, Jaccard Index and F1-Score values of 97.82%, 97.95%, 98.24% and 97.95% respectively with a computational time of 119.2891 seconds. Therefore the suggested model’s evolutionary outputs outperform state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract

Electro discharge machining (EDM) process is applied to machine hard and difficult to cut materials. In this research hard material namely, grey cast iron is used as a workpiece and copper electrode 2 mm in diameter is used for making holes through EDM process. The effect of input parameters such as pulse-on time (Ton), pulse off time (Toff), gap voltage (Vg) and current (I) on material removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR) were studied. Based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) analysis the gap voltage and pulse on time has significant impact on MRR and TWR respectively. The mathematical model is developed for MRR and TWR using RSM. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows that voltage has notable impact on MRR. Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is used to estimate the best combination for higher MRR and lower TWR. Based on the analysis the estimated combination is pulse-on time of 45 μs, pulse-off time of 3 μs, gap voltage of 25 V and current of 10 A.

Abstract

Semantic segmentation is a significant task in the field of Remote Sensing and Computer Vision. DeepLabV3+ is a convolutional neural network architecture that excels in the task of semantic segmentation, which involves assigning a class label to each pixel in an input image. This Paper proposes an Adaptive Deeplabv3+ model for semantic segmentation of Aerial Images, which combines Deeplabv3+ with the Improved Golden Eagle Optimization Algorithm (IGEO), to solve imprecise target segmentation and poor border segmentation accuracy. To enhance the quality of segmentation, Adaptive DeepLabV3+ employs atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) with multiple dilation rates in the encoder and allows the model to capture multi-scale context information efficiently, enabling it to distinguish between objects with varying scales. The proposed model effectively segmented the aerial images by optimizing the hyper-parameters such as hidden neuron count and learning rate. The suggested model achieved 98.46% accuracy, 96.32% correlation, 96.48% precision and 98.36% dice coefficient within the computation time of 136.8912 and 147.2684 seconds for dataset 1 and 2 respectively. Therefore the evolutional outcomes of the proposed model show significantly improved than the state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract

Abstract The communication in a wireless network mainly depends on the frequencies or channels assigned to them. The channels must be assigned to all the transmitters in the network without interference for effective communication. This problem is said to be a channel (frequency) assignment problem (CAP). With the limited availability of channels, CAP has become a challenging problem. This problem is modeled as a graph, where each transmitter is represented by a vertex, and two vertices are adjacent when their corresponding transmitters are close. The labelling technique in graph theory has played an important role in solving CAP, thereby the time and cost will be saved. In radio antipodal labeling, the channels were reused again for the antipodal vertices. It will reduce the usage of the number of channels, with minimum interference. Hence it is a better labeling compared to other labelings. The value of the minimum span gives the bandwidth or spectrum of the channels. The honeycomb network plays an important role in communication engineering because of its structure. In this paper, the bounds of the antipodal number of honeycomb derived networks—triangular and rhombic honeycomb were obtained and represented graphically. These bounds give the optimum number of channels (bandwidth) needed for these honeycomb derived networks for effective communication without interference.

Abstract

Encryption and decryption are the two processes in cryptography to conceal and convey important information to an authorized person without third-party interruption in a network. Cryptography is a branch of computer science in which the system has to be updated every second. It mainly depends on mathematical concepts like number theory and algebra. Recently, graph theory concepts are employed in cryptography to make it stronger. The usage of complex graphs in cryptosystems makes it difficult to hack. In this paper, we proposed a cryptosystem using the Turan graph which has a complex graph structure. The advantage of using a Turan graph is that it is a unique multipartite complete graph with more edges than other multipartite complete graphs. This adds robustness to the cryptosystem. The novelty of this paper is the decomposition of the Turan graph into paths and stars and applying edge labeling to them to encrypt and decrypt a sentence of k words. The algorithms for encryption and decryption are also proposed in this paper.

Abstract

We analyzed the 7.92$\times 10^{11}$ cosmic-ray-induced muon events collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory from May 13, 2011, when the fully constructed experiment started to take data, to May 12, 2023. This dataset provides an up-to-date cosmic-ray arrival direction distribution in the Southern Hemisphere with unprecedented statistical accuracy covering more than a full period length of a solar cycle. Improvements in Monte Carlo event simulation and better handling of year-to-year differences in data processing significantly reduce systematic uncertainties below the level of statistical fluctuations compared to the previously published results. We confirm the observation of a change in the angular structure of the cosmic-ray anisotropy between 10 TeV and 1 PeV, more specifically in the 100-300 TeV energy range.

8. Simulating the Arrival of Multiple Coronal Mass Ejections that Triggered the Gannon Superstorm on May 10, 2024

Abstract

The May 10, 2024 space weather event stands out as the most powerful storm recorded during the current solar cycle. This study employs a numerical framework utilizing a semi-empirical coronal model, along with HUXt (Heliospheric Upwind eXtrapolation with time-dependence) and cone-CME models for the inner heliosphere, to forecast solar wind velocity and the arrival of CMEs associated with this event. The simulations were also carried out using Space Weather Adaptive SimulaTion (SWASTi) and a drag-based model (DBM) for this complex event of multiple CMEs. Predicted arrival times and velocities from these models are compared with actual observations at the Sun-Earth L1 point. These simulations reveal that three coronal mass ejections (CMEs) reached Earth nearly simultaneously, resulting in the extreme space weather event, followed by the arrival of a few more eruptions. The simulations accurately predicted arrival times with a discrepancy of approximately 5 hours or less for these CMEs. Further, the ensemble study of DBM shows the sensitivity of the CME arrival time to the background solar wind speed and drag parameters. All three models have done fairly well in reproducing the arrival time closely to the actual observation of the CMEs responsible for the extreme geomagnetic storm of May 10, 2024. Abstract

The radio galaxy NGC 1275, located at the central region of Perseus cluster, is a well-known very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter. The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment Telescope has detected two distinct episodes of VHE (E > 80 GeV) gamma-ray emission from NGC 1275 during 2022 December and 2023 January. The second outburst, observed on 2023 January 10, was the more intense of the two, with flux reaching 58$\%$ of the Crab Nebula flux above 80 GeV. The differential energy spectrum measured between 80 GeV and 1.5 TeV can be described by a power law with a spectral index of $\Gamma = - 2.90 \pm 0.16_{stat}$ for both flaring events. The broadband spectral energy distribution derived from these flares, along with quasisimultaneous low-energy counterparts, suggests that the observed gamma-ray emission can be explained using a homogeneous single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. The physical parameters derived from this model for both flaring states are similar. The intermediate state observed between two flaring episodes is explained by a lower Doppler factor or magnetic field, which subsequently returned to its previous value during the high-activity state observed on 2023 January 10., Comment: 7 Pages, 5 Figures, and 1 Table

10. Is Prior-Free Black-Box Non-Stationary Reinforcement Learning Feasible?

Abstract

We study the problem of Non-Stationary Reinforcement Learning (NS-RL) without prior knowledge about the system's non-stationarity. A state-of-the-art, black-box algorithm, known as MASTER, is considered, with a focus on identifying the conditions under which it can achieve its stated goals. Specifically, we prove that MASTER's non-stationarity detection mechanism is not triggered for practical choices of horizon, leading to performance akin to a random restarting algorithm. Moreover, we show that the regret bound for MASTER, while being order optimal, stays above the worst-case linear regret until unreasonably large values of the horizon. To validate these observations, MASTER is tested for the special case of piecewise stationary multi-armed bandits, along with methods that employ random restarting, and others that use quickest change detection to restart. A simple, order optimal random restarting algorithm, that has prior knowledge of the non-stationarity is proposed as a baseline. The behavior of the MASTER algorithm is validated in simulations, and it is shown that methods employing quickest change detection are more robust and consistently outperform MASTER and other random restarting approaches., Comment: Corrected minor typos in the proof of Theorem 2 on pages 25 and 26

Abstract

A myriad of factors affect large scale ads delivery systems and influence both user experience and revenue. One such factor is proactive detection and calibration of seasonal advertisements to help with increasing conversion and user satisfaction. In this paper, we present Proactive Detection and Calibration of Seasonal Advertisements (PDCaSA), a research problem that is of interest for the ads ranking and recommendation community, both in the industrial setting as well as in research. Our paper provides detailed guidelines from various angles of this problem tested in, and motivated by a large-scale industrial ads ranking system. We share our findings including the clear statement of the problem and its motivation rooted in real-world systems, evaluation metrics, and sheds lights to the existing challenges, lessons learned, and best practices of data annotation and machine learning modeling to tackle this problem. Lastly, we present a conclusive solution we took during this research exploration: to detect seasonality, we leveraged Multimodal LLMs (MLMs) which on our in-house benchmark achieved 0.97 top F1 score. Based on our findings, we envision MLMs as a teacher for knowledge distillation, a machine labeler, and a part of the ensembled and tiered seasonality detection system, which can empower ads ranking systems with enriched seasonal information.

Abstract

A finite horizon variant of the quickest change detection problem is studied, in which the goal is to minimize a delay threshold (latency), under constraints on the probability of false alarm and the probability that the latency is exceeded. In addition, the horizon is not known to the change detector. A variant of the cumulative sum (CuSum) test with a threshold that increasing logarithmically with time is proposed as a candidate solution to the problem. An information-theoretic lower bound on the minimum value of the latency under the constraints is then developed. This lower bound is used to establish certain asymptotic optimality properties of the proposed test in terms of the horizon and the false alarm probability. Abstract

State of the art methods for target tracking with sensor management (or controlled sensing) are model-based and are obtained through solutions to Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) formulations. In this paper a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach to the problem is explored for the setting where the motion model for the object/target to be tracked is unknown to the observer. It is assumed that the target dynamics are stationary in time, the state space and the observation space are discrete, and there is complete observability of the location of the target under certain (a priori unknown) sensor control actions. Then, a novel Markov Decision Process (MDP) rather than POMDP formulation is proposed for the tracking problem with controlled sensing, which is termed as Track-MDP. In contrast to the POMDP formulation, the Track-MDP formulation is amenable to an RL based solution. It is shown that the optimal policy for the Track-MDP formulation, which is approximated through RL, is guaranteed to track all significant target paths with certainty. The Track-MDP method is then compared with the optimal POMDP policy, and it is shown that the infinite horizon tracking reward of the optimal Track-MDP policy is the same as that of the optimal POMDP policy. In simulations it is demonstrated that Track-MDP based RL leads to a policy that can track the target with high accuracy.

Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multi-messenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and ten years of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are $\sim3\%$ and $\sim9\%$ for the time-averaged and time-dependent case, respectively., Comment: 14 Pages 7 Figures

Abstract

We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements $|U_{\mu 4}|^2 < 0.0534$ and $|U_{\tau 4}|^2 < 0.0574$ at 90% CL under the assumption that $\Delta m^2_{41}\geq 1\;\mathrm{eV^2}$. These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the 3+1 sterile neutrino landscape., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Among the renewable energy applications, the most popular inverters are cascaded multilevel inverters. Irrespective of numerous benefits these inverters face reliability issues due to the presence of more circuit components in the design. This has been a critical challenge for researchers in designing inverters with enhanced reliability by reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD). This paper proposes a 31-level asymmetric cascaded multilevel inverter for renewable energy applications. The proposed topology produces waveforms consisting of the staircase with a high number of output levels with lesser components with low THD. The investigations on the feasibility and performance of MLI under steady-state, transient, and dynamic load disturbances. The results are validated from a 1.6kW system which provides the proposed inverter.

Abstract

In this article, we define Dirichlet-type space $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ over the bidisc $\mathbb D^2$ for any measure $\boldsymbol{\mu}\in\mathcal{P}\mathcal{M}_{+}(\mathbb T^2).$ We show that the set of polynomials is dense in $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ and the pair $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ of multiplication operator by co-ordinate functions on $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ is a pair of commuting $2$-isometries. Moreover, the pair $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ is a left-inverse commuting pair in the following sense: $L_{M_{z_i}} M_{z_j}=M_{z_j}L_{M_{z_i}}$ for $1\leqslant i\neq j\leqslant n,$ where $L_{M_{z_i}}$ is the left inverse of $M_{z_i}$ with $\ker L_{M_{z_i}} =\ker M_{z_i}^*$, $1\leqslant i \leqslant n$. Furthermore, it turns out that, for the class of left-inverse commuting tuple $\boldsymbol T=(T_1, \ldots, T_n)$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, the joint wandering subspace property is equivalent to the individual wandering subspace property. As an application of this, the article shows that the class of left-inverse commuting pair with certain splitting property is modelled by the pair of multiplication by co-ordinate functions $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ on $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ for some $\boldsymbol{\mu}\in\mathcal{P}\mathcal{M}_{+}(\mathbb T^2).$, Comment: The article has been significantly revised

Abstract

Experimental searches for vector-like quarks have until now only considered their decays into Standard Model particles. However, various new physics scenarios predict additional scalars, so that these vector-like quarks can decay to new channels. These new channels reduce the branching ratios into Standard Model final states, significantly affecting current mass bounds. In this article, we quantitatively assess the relevance and observability of single and pair production processes of vector-like quarks, followed by decays into both standard and exotic final states. We highlight the importance of large widths and the relative interaction strengths with Standard Model particles and new scalars. Abstract

The recent IceCube detection of TeV neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 suggests that active galactic nuclei (AGN) could make a sizable contribution to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos. The absence of TeV $\gamma$-rays from NGC 1068 indicates neutrino production in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole, where the high radiation density leads to $\gamma$-ray attenuation. Therefore, any potential neutrino emission from similar sources is not expected to correlate with high-energy $\gamma$-rays. Disk-corona models predict neutrino emission from Seyfert galaxies to correlate with keV X-rays, as they are tracers of coronal activity. Using through-going track events from the Northern Sky recorded by IceCube between 2011 and 2021, we report results from a search for individual and aggregated neutrino signals from 27 additional Seyfert galaxies that are contained in the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Besides the generic single power-law, we evaluate the spectra predicted by the disk-corona model. Assuming all sources to be intrinsically similar to NGC 1068, our findings constrain the collective neutrino emission from X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies in the Northern Hemisphere, but, at the same time, show excesses of neutrinos that could be associated with the objects NGC 4151 and CGCG 420-015. Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the $\textit{Swift}$-BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 years of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $4.02_{-1.52}^{+1.58} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV, with power-law spectral index, $\gamma$ = 3.10$^{+0.26}_{-0.22}$, consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a post-trial significance of 2.9$\sigma$. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $1.51_{-0.81}^{+0.99} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV and $\gamma$ = 2.83$^{+0.35}_{-0.28}$.

Abstract

We present the first three-parameter fit to a 3+1 sterile neutrino model using 7.634 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory on $\nu_\mu+\overline{\nu}_\mu$ charged-current interactions in the energy range 500--9976 GeV. Our analysis is sensitive to the mass-squared splitting between the heaviest and lightest mass state ($\Delta m_{41}^2$), the mixing matrix element connecting muon flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\mu4}|^2$), and the element connecting tau flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\tau4}|^2$). Predicted propagation effects in matter enhance the signature through a resonance as atmospheric neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere traverse the Earth to the IceCube detector at the South Pole. The remaining sterile neutrino matrix elements are left fixed, with $|U_{e4}|^2= 0$ and $\delta_{14}=0$, as they have a negligible effect, and $\delta_{24}=\pi$ is set to give the most conservative limits. The result is consistent with the no-sterile neutrino hypothesis with a probability of 4.3%. Profiling the likelihood of each parameter yields the 90\% confidence levels: $ 2.4\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} < \Delta m_{41}^2 <9.6\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} $ , $0.0081 < |U_{\mu4}|^2 < 0.10$ , and $|U_{\tau4}|^2< 0.035$, which narrows the allowed parameter-space for $|U_{\tau4}|^2$. Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of child-robot interactions with the HaKsh-E social robot in India, examining both individual and group interaction settings. The research centers on game-based interactions designed to teach hand hygiene to children aged 7-11. Utilizing video analysis, rubric assessments, and post-study questionnaires, the study gathered data from 36 participants. Findings indicate that children in both settings developed positive perceptions of the robot in terms of the robot's trustworthiness, closeness, and social support. The significant difference in the interaction level scores presented in the study suggests that group settings foster higher levels of interaction, potentially due to peer influence and collaborative dynamics. While both settings showed significant improvements in learning outcomes, the individual setting had more pronounced learning gains. This suggests that personal interactions with the robot might lead to deeper or more effective learning experiences. Abstract

We provide supporting details for the search for a 3+1 sterile neutrino using data collected over eleven years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The analysis uses atmospheric muon-flavored neutrinos from 0.5 to 100\, TeV that traverse the Earth to reach the IceCube detector, and finds a best-fit point at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$ with a goodness-of-fit p-value of 12\% and consistency with the null hypothesis of no oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results. Abstract

This Letter presents the result of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using 10.7 years of IceCube data. We analyze atmospheric muon neutrinos that traverse the Earth with energies ranging from 0.5 to 100 TeV, incorporating significant improvements in modeling neutrino flux and detector response compared to earlier studies. Notably, for the first time, we categorize data into starting and through-going events, distinguishing neutrino interactions with vertices inside or outside the instrumented volume, to improve energy resolution. The best-fit point for a 3+1 model is found to be at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$, which agrees with previous iterations of this study. Abstract

Galactic PeVatrons are sources that can accelerate cosmic rays to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding ambient material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multi-messenger analysis that combines gamma rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software (i3mla) and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood (HAL) to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 years of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that the gamma-ray emission from five of the sources can not be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract

In the problem of quickest change detection (QCD), a change occurs at some unknown time in the distribution of a sequence of independent observations. This work studies a QCD problem where the change is either a bad change, which we aim to detect, or a confusing change, which is not of our interest. Our objective is to detect a bad change as quickly as possible while avoiding raising a false alarm for pre-change or a confusing change. We identify a specific set of pre-change, bad change, and confusing change distributions that pose challenges beyond the capabilities of standard Cumulative Sum (CuSum) procedures. Proposing novel CuSum-based detection procedures, S-CuSum and J-CuSum, leveraging two CuSum statistics, we offer solutions applicable across all kinds of pre-change, bad change, and confusing change distributions. For both S-CuSum and J-CuSum, we provide analytical performance guarantees and validate them by numerical results. Furthermore, both procedures are computationally efficient as they only require simple recursive updates.

Abstract

More than 10,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a diameter of 80 mm will be installed in multi-PMT Digital Optical Modules (mDOMs) of the IceCube Upgrade. These have been tested and pre-calibrated at two sites. A throughput of more than 1000 PMTs per week with both sites was achieved with a modular design of the testing facilities and highly automated testing procedures. The testing facilities can easily be adapted to other PMTs, such that they can, e.g., be re-used for testing the PMTs for IceCube-Gen2. Single photoelectron response, high voltage dependence, time resolution, prepulse, late pulse, afterpulse probabilities, and dark rates were measured for each PMT. Abstract

The studies of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) coupled with photoactive particles, plasmonic nanocavities, waveguides, and metamaterials remain in their infancy. This study investigates the third-order NLO properties of MoS$_2$ nanosheets in the presence of a semiconductor photoactive medium. Our extensive studies and the obtained results reveal the counteractive coupling effect of bare and passivated quantum dots on the MoS$_2$ nanosheet, as made evident by the analysis of the NLO processes. The enhanced NLO properties of MoS$_2$ nanosheets functionalized with CdSe and CdSe-V2O5 quantum dots are helpful for applications as saturable absorbers in laser applications and the emission of coherent short-wavelength radiation. The multiphoton-excitation resonance energy transfer mechanism exploiting remote dipole dipole coupling, and ultrafast charge transfer pathways emerges as another plausible way to alter the NLO properties in TMDs., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Nonreciprocal nonequilibrium process are attracting growing interest in sociology, animal behaviour, chemistry, and nanotechnology, and may have played a role in the origin of life. It is less widely recognized, however, that in open systems light can induce nonreciprocal predator-prey like forces between nanoparticles. Such forces provide access to the continuous time crystal state of matter, which has been demonstrated in a plasmonic metamaterial array of nanowires wherein light triggers a spontaneous mobilization transition to the robust oscillatory state, breaking time translation symmetry. Here, we report on the first experimental study of the transient dynamics of light-induced mobilization and demobilization in a time crystal. By analysing time resolved phase trajectories of the system of nanowires, we show that the mobilization transition is accompanied by breaking of continuous time translation symmetry and ergodicity, and a decrease in the entropy of motion. This insight into the transient dynamics of a nonreciprocity-driven time crystal is relevant to optical timetronics, an information and communications technology paradigm relying on the unique functionalities of time crystals, and applications of the interacting nanowire oscillator platform to modelling a wide range of nonreciprocal processes from many-body dynamics to the early stages of matter-to-life transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The James-Stein estimator is used in constructing detection schemes that exhibit strong detection performance both asymptotically and non-asymptotically. First, a James-Stein-based extension of the recently developed windowed CuSum test is introduced. Our results indicate that the proposed scheme constitutes a uniform improvement over its typical maximum likelihood variant. That is, the proposed James-Stein version achieves a smaller detection delay simultaneously for all possible post-change parameter values and every false alarm rate constraint, as long as the number of parallel data streams is greater than three. Additionally, an alternative detection procedure that utilizes the James-Stein estimator is shown to have asymptotic detection delay properties that compare favorably to existing tests. The second-order term of the asymptotic average detection delay is reduced in a predefined low-dimensional subspace of the parameter space, while second-order asymptotic minimaxity is preserved. The results are verified in simulations, where the proposed schemes are shown to achieve smaller detection delays compared to existing alternatives, especially when the number of data streams is large., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) is a large size (21m) Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) installed at an altitude of 4270m above sea level at Hanle, Ladakh in northern India. Here we report the detection of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from Crab Nebula above 80 GeV. We analysed ~15 hours of data collected at low zenith angle between November 2022 and February 2023. The energy spectrum is well described by a log-parabola function with a flux of ~(3.46 +/- 0.26stat) x 10-10 TeV-1 cm-2 s-1, at 400 GeV with spectral index of 2.09 +/- 0.06stat and a curvature parameter of 0.08 +/- 0.07stat. The gamma-rays are detected in an energy range spanning from 80 GeV to ~5 TeV. The energy resolution improves from ~34% at an analysis energy threshold of 80 GeV to ~21% above 1 TeV. The daily light curve and the spectral energy distribution obtained for the Crab Nebula is in agreement with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We study the problem of distributed and rate-adaptive feature compression for linear regression. A set of distributed sensors collect disjoint features of regressor data. A fusion center is assumed to contain a pretrained linear regression model, trained on a dataset of the entire uncompressed data. At inference time, the sensors compress their observations and send them to the fusion center through communication-constrained channels, whose rates can change with time. Our goal is to design a feature compression {scheme} that can adapt to the varying communication constraints, while maximizing the inference performance at the fusion center. We first obtain the form of optimal quantizers assuming knowledge of underlying regressor data distribution. Under a practically reasonable approximation, we then propose a distributed compression scheme which works by quantizing a one-dimensional projection of the sensor data. We also propose a simple adaptive scheme for handling changes in communication constraints. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the distributed adaptive compression scheme through simulated experiments.

Abstract

Theoretical chemists are fascinated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) because of their unique electromagnetic and other significant properties, such as superaromaticity. The study of PAHs has been steadily increasing because of their wide-ranging applications in several fields, like steel manufacturing, shale oil extraction, coal gasification, production of coke, tar distillation, and nanosciences. Topological indices (TIs) are numerical quantities that give a mathematical expression for the chemical structures. They are useful and cost-effective tools for predicting the properties of chemical compounds theoretically. Entropic network measures are a type of TIs with a broad array of applications, involving quantitative characterization of molecular structures and the investigation of some specific chemical properties of molecular graphs. Irregularity indices are numerical parameters that quantify the irregularity of a molecular graph and are used to predict some of the chemical properties, including boiling points, resistance, enthalpy of vaporization, entropy, melting points, and toxicity. This study aims to determine analytical expressions for the VDB entropy and irregularity-based indices in the rectangular Kekulene system.
