Music-making relies on precise temporal control and mutual coordination among performers, particularly to maintain tempo. We evaluate the impact of human-machine interaction and rhythmic subdivisions on tempo change in musical trios. A synchronization-continuation task was performed by trios of human participants interacting with confederates or with algorithmic (i.e. machine) models. Sounded tone onsets were produced by a linear error-correction model, delay-coupled model, and Kuramoto model that replaced a human participant. Inter-onset intervals were examined from participants who performed rhythms in both in-phase and anti-phase conditions while a third group member was either a human or algorithmic model. Trios drifted toward faster tempi more when they contained a human than an algorithmic model. Tempo drift also increased for the aligned rhythms (in-phase) compared to rhythms with rhythmic subdivisions (anti-phase). Finally, the tested algorithmic models replicated the confederate's tempo drift without the use of any period correction mechanisms. This research advances our understanding of unintentional tempo drift, offering insights into ensemble dynamics and models of temporal coordination in groups. Implications for musical coordination and avenues for future research are discussed.

Neuromodulation is for over 30 years an effective and up-to-date technique in the treatment of patients with functional medical problems such as overactive bladder, non-obstructive urinary retention, and faecal incontinence. In clinical urological, uro-gynaecological and coloproctological practice, only the sacral and the tibial nerves have been used for neuromodulation for the time being, and the most commonly applied techniques are permanent sacral nerve stimulation with an implanted electrode and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. For the time being, neuromodulation is recommended only for patients who do not respond to standard treatments and before more invasive surgery. Minor and reversible complications can be seen after neuromodulation techniques, but can be resolved in most patients. Recent developments include better lead placement techniques, developments in programming, rechargeable and MRI-compliant batteries. These novelties reduced morbidity and have made neuromodulation more cost-effective. During the last 5 years, numerous innovative devices have been designed and investigated to address the limitations of currently available hardware and other nerve targets have been explored. In the future the emergence of alternative stimulation sites and programmes as well as further technical and technological developments, may expand the clinical application of neuromodulation in patients with functional pelvic problems, increase the success rate and reduce the complication rate.

Electricity has been used since antiquity for medical purposes, including lower urinary tract dysfunction. The advent of artificially produced electricity, the development of battery technology and better knowledge of lower urinary tract physiology, allowed for electrical stimulation as a therapeutic tool. Initially focused on neurogenic bladder dysfunction, functional electrical stimulation (neuromodulation) at low amplitude was developed to treat lower urinary tract dysfunction, with the sacral nerves as primary target. Together with better understanding of the mechanisms of action, technical and hardware developments sacral neuromodulation allowed for excellent results and low morbidity.

Evolutionary medicine can help to better understand the basis of pelvic floor disorders. Some evidences of the anthropological literature are reviewed, with emphasis on the paleontological clues and phylogenetic comparison of cephalo-pelvic relations in Homo and non-human primates, is undertaken to elucidate the origin of pelvic floor disturbances in humans. Labor difficulties inherent to bipedal gait and the encephalization process could have started several million years ago with Australopithecus and appear undeniable since Homo heidelbergensis, the precursor of Neanderthals. The mechanisms involved in modern human delivery with fetal rotation into the birth canal could be exclusive of Homo sapiens. Among pre-bipedal non-human primates only squirrel monkey can suffer severe dystocia and spontaneous pelvic organ prolapse. Better understanding of the evolutionary changes regarding the human pelvis and the pelvic floor could help us to better understand pelvic floor disorders and the interventions to avoid this highly prevalent ailment.

Tuberculosis has become an infrequent disease in Western society, hence has tuberculosis of the bladder. However, when tuberculosis was prevalent, urogenital tuberculosis and tuberculosis of the bladder could be the consequence if untreated, and were responsible for severe bladder dysfunction. Before antibiotic treatment became available, chronic bladder tuberculosis caused irreversible damage and often necessitated bladder reconstruction or even cystectomy. The specific antibiotic treatment of tuberculosis eradicated bladder dysfunction caused by tuberculosis. We aim to review the history of urogenital tuberculosis and the consequent dysfunction of the bladder based on existing literature.

Context: Midurethral slings (MUSs) are the most used therapy for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). While warning signals about potential complications have been raised worldwide, there is a lack of safety data especially in the long term. Objective: Our objective was to evaluate synthetic MUS safety outcomes at long term in adult women. Evidence acquisition: We included all studies evaluating MUSs in adult women with SUI. All synthetic MUSs have been considered: tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), transobturator tape (TOT), and mini-slings. The primary outcome was the reoperation rate at 5 yr. Evidence synthesis: Of 5586 references screened after duplicate removal, 44 studies (8218 patients) were included. Among these, nine were randomized controlled trials and 35 were cohort studies. The overall reoperation rates at 5 yr varied between 0% and 19% for TOT (11 studies), 0% and 13% for TVT (17 studies), and 0% and 19% for mini-slings (two studies). The overall reoperation rates at 10 yr varied between 5% and 15% for TOT (four studies) and between 2% and 17% for TVT (four studies). There were few safety data beyond 5 yr: 22.7% of the articles reported a follow-up at ≥10 yr and 2.3% at ≥15 yr. Conclusions: The incidence rates of reoperations and complications are heterogeneous, and data beyond 5 yr are rare. Patient summary: There is an urgent need to improve safety monitoring of mesh as our review highlights that available safety data are heterogeneous and of insufficient quality to guide the decision.

This dataset comprises motion capture, audio, and questionnaire data from violinists who underwent four augmented reality training sessions spanning a month. The motion capture data was meticulously recorded using a 42-marker Qualisys Animation marker set, capturing movement at a high rate of 120 Hz. Audio data was captured using two condenser microphones, boasting a bit depth of 24 and a sampling rate of 48 kHz. The dataset encompasses recordings from 2 violin orchestra section leaders and 11 participants.Initially, we collected motion capture (MoCap) and audio data from the section leaders, who performed 2 distinct musical pieces. These recordings were then utilized to create 2 avatars, each representing a section leader and their respective musical piece. Subsequently, each avatar was assigned to a group of violinists, forming groups of 5 and 6 participants. Throughout the experiment, participants rehearsed one piece four times using a 2D representation of the avatar, and the other piece four times using a 3D representation.During the practice sessions, participants were instructed to meticulously replicate the avatar's bowing techniques, encompassing gestures related to bowing, articulation, and dynamics. For each trial, we collected motion capture, audio data, and self-reported questionnaires from all participants. The questionnaires included the Witmer presence questionnaire, a subset of the Makransky presence questionnaire, the sense of musical agency questionnaire, as well as open-ended questions for participants to express their thoughts and experiences.Additionally, participants completed the Immersive Tendencies questionnaire, the Music Sophistication Index questionnaire, and provided demographic information before the first session commenced.

Summary: Humans exhibit a strong tendency to synchronize movements with each other, with visual perspective potentially influencing interpersonal synchronization. By manipulating the visual scenes of participants engaged in a joint finger-tapping task, we examined the effects of 1st person and 2nd person visual perspectives on their coordination dynamics. We hypothesized that perceiving the partner’s movements from their 1st person perspective would enhance spontaneous interpersonal synchronization, potentially mediated by the embodiment of the partner’s hand. We observed significant differences in attractor dynamics across visual perspectives. Specifically, participants in 1st person coupling were unable to maintain de-coupled trajectories as effectively as in 2nd person coupling. Our findings suggest that visual perspective influences coordination dynamics in dyadic interactions, engaging error-correction mechanisms in individual brains as they integrate the partner’s hand into their body representation. Our results have the potential to inform the development of applications for motor training and rehabilitation.

AimsSacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a guideline-recommended treatment with proven therapeutic benefit for urinary urgency incontinence (UUI) patients. The Axonics® System is the first Food and Drug Administration-approved rechargeable SNM system and is designed to deliver therapy for a minimum of 15 years. The ARTISAN-SNM study was designed to evaluate UUI participants treated with the Axonics System. Two-year follow-up results are presented.MethodsOne hundred and twenty-nine UUI participants underwent implantation with the Axonics System. Therapeutic response rate, participant quality of life (QoL), and satisfaction were determined using 3-day voiding diaries, ICIQ-OABqol, and satisfaction questionnaires. Participants were considered responders if they had a 50% or greater reduction in UUI episodes post-treatment. As-treated and Completers analyses are presented.ResultsAt 2 years, 93% of the participants (n = 121 Completers at 2 years) were therapy responders, of which 82% achieved ≥ 75% reduction in UUI episodes and 37% were dry (100% reduction). Daily UUI episodes reduced from 5.6 ± 0.3 at baseline to 1.0 ± 0.2 at 2 years. Statistically significant improvements in ICIQ-OABqol were reported. All participants were able to recharge their device and 94% of participants reported that the recharging frequency and duration were acceptable. Participant demographics nor condition severity were correlated with clinical outcomes or recharging experience. No unanticipated or serious device-related adverse events occurred.ConclusionsAt 2 years, participants treated with the Axonics System demonstrated sustained safety and efficacy, high levels of satisfaction with therapy and recharging. Participant-related factors were not associated with efficacy or recharging outcomes, indicating the reported results are applicable to a diverse population.

AimsSacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a guideline-recommended treatment for voiding dysfunction including urgency, urge incontinence, and nonobstructive retention as well as fecal incontinence. The Axonics® System is a miniaturized, rechargeable SNM system designed to provide therapy for at least 15 years, which is expected to significantly reduce revision surgeries as it will not require replacement as frequently as the non-rechargeable SNM system. The ARTISAN-SNM study is a pivotal study designed to treat patients with urinary urgency incontinence (UUI). Clinical results at 1-year are presented.MethodsA total of 129 eligible UUI patients were treated. All participants were implanted with a quadripolar tined lead and neurostimulator in a single procedure. Efficacy data were collected using a 3-day bladder diary, a validated quality of life questionnaire (ICIQ-OABqol), and a participant satisfaction questionnaire. Therapy responders were defined as participants with ≥50% reduction in UUI episodes compared to baseline. Data were analyzed on all 129 participants.ResultsAt 1 year, 89% of the participants were therapy responders. The average UUI episodes per day reduced from 5.6 ± 0.3 at baseline to 1.4 ± 0.2. Participants experienced an overall clinically meaningful improvement of 34 points on the ICIQ-OABqol questionnaire. All study participants (100%) were able to recharge their device at 1 year, and 96% of participants reported that the frequency and duration of recharging was acceptable. There were no serious device-related adverse events.ConclusionsThe Axonics System is safe and effective at 1 year, with 89% of participants experiencing clinically and statistically significant improvements in UUI symptoms.

Virtual reality (VR) brings radical new possibilities to the empirical study of social music cognition and interaction. In the present article, we consider the role of VR as a research tool, based on its potential to create a sense of “social presence”: the illusory feeling of being, and socially interacting, inside a virtual environment. This makes VR promising for bridging ecological validity (“research in the wild”) and experimental control (“research in the lab”) in empirical music research. A critical assumption however is the actual ability of VR to simulate real-life social interactions, either via human-embodied avatars or computer-controlled agents. The mediation of social musical interactions via VR is particularly challenging due to their embodied, complex, and emotionally delicate nature. In this article, we introduce a methodological framework to operationalize social presence by a combination of factors across interrelated layers, relating to the performance output, embodied co-regulation, and subjective experiences. This framework provides the basis for the proposal of a pragmatic approach to determine the level of social presence in virtual musical interactions, by comparing the outcomes across the multiple layers with the outcomes of corresponding real-life musical interactions. We applied and tested this pragmatic approach via a case-study of piano duet performances of the piece Piano Phase composed by Steve Reich. This case-study indicated that a piano duet performed in VR, in which the real-time interaction between pianists is mediated by embodied avatars, might lead to a strong feeling of social presence, as reflected in the measures of performance output, embodied co-regulation, and subjective experience. In contrast, although a piano duet in VR between an actual pianist and a computer-controlled agent led to a relatively successful performance output, it was inadequate in terms of both embodied co-regulation and subjective experience.

Musical life became disrupted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many musicians and venues turned to online alternatives, such as livestreaming. In this study, three livestreamed concerts were organized to examine separate, yet interconnected concepts—agency, presence, and social context—to ascertain which components of livestreamed concerts facilitate social connectedness. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling was conducted on 83 complete responses to examine the effects of the manipulations on feelings of social connectedness with the artist and the audience. Results showed that in concert 1, where half of the participants were allowed to vote for the final song to be played, this option did not result in the experience of more agency. Instead, if their preferred song was played (regardless of voting ability) participants experienced greater connectedness to the artist. In concert 2, participants who attended the concert with virtual reality headsets experienced greater feelings of physical presence, as well as greater feelings of connectedness with the artist, than those that viewed a normal YouTube livestream. In concert 3, attendance through Zoom led to greater experience of social presence, but predicted less connectedness with the artist, compared to a normal YouTube livestream. Crucially, a greater negative impact of COVID-19 (e.g., loneliness) predicted feelings of connectedness with the artist, possibly because participants fulfilled their social needs with this parasocial interaction. Examining data from all concerts suggested that physical presence was a predictor of connectedness with both the artist and the audience, while social presence only predicted connectedness with the audience. Correlational analyses revealed that reductions in loneliness and isolation were associated with feelings of shared agency, physical and social presence, and connectedness to the audience. Overall, the findings suggest that in order to reduce feelings of loneliness and increase connectedness, concert organizers and musicians could tune elements of their livestreams to facilitate feelings of physical and social presence.

Since sound and music are powerful forces and drivers of human behavior and physiology, we propose the use of sonification to activate healthy breathing patterns in participants to induce relaxation. Sonification is often used in the context of biofeedback as it can represent an informational, non-invasive and real-time stimulus to monitor, motivate or modify human behavior. The first goal of this study is the proposal and evaluation of a distance-based biofeedback system using a tempo- and phase-aligned sonification strategy to adapt breathing patterns and induce states of relaxation. A second goal is the evaluation of several sonification stimuli on 18 participants that were recruited online and of which we analyzed psychometric and behavioral data using, respectively questionnaires and respiration rate and ratio. Sonification stimuli consisted of filtered noise mimicking a breathing sound, nature environmental sounds and a musical phrase. Preliminary results indicated the nature stimulus as most pleasant and as leading to the most prominent decrease of respiration rate. The noise sonification had the most beneficial effect on respiration ratio. While further research is needed to generalize these findings, this study and its methodological underpinnings suggest the potential of the proposed biofeedback system to perform ecologically valid experiments at participants' homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hundreds of sourdoughs have been investigated in the last decades. However, many studies used a culture-dependent and/or culture-independent microbiological approach [mainly based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR amplicons], seldomly combined with a metabolite target analysis, to characterize the microbial species communities of the sourdoughs examined. Moreover, attention was mainly paid on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast species. In the present study, distinct household-scale (including an artisan lambic brewery) and artisan bakery-scale backslopped sourdoughs (17 in total), obtained from different regions (Belgium, France, United Kingdom, and USA), were examined through a multiphasic approach, encompassing a culture-dependent analysis [targeting LAB, acetic acid bacteria (AAB), and yeasts], different culture-independent techniques [rRNA-PCR-DGGE, metagenetics, and metagenomics (four bakery sourdoughs)], and metabolite target analysis. It turned out that the microbial species diversity of the sourdoughs was influenced by the house microbiota of the producer. Further, when the producer made use of different flours, the sourdoughs harbored similar microbial communities, independent of the flour used. AAB were only present in the Belgian sourdoughs, which might again be related to the processing environment. Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensis (formerly known as Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis) was the prevalent LAB species of the eight sourdoughs produced by two of the three bakeries of different countries analyzed. These sourdoughs were characterized by the presence of either Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Kazachstania humilis. Moreover, the presence of Fl. sanfranciscensis was positively correlated with the production of mannitol and negatively correlated with the presence of other LAB or AAB species. Sourdoughs produced in an artisan lambic brewery were characterized by the presence of the yeast species Dekkera anomala and Pichia membranifaciens. One household sourdough was characterized by the presence of uncommon species, such as Pediococcus parvulus and Pichia fermentans. Metagenomic sequencing allowed the detection of many more LAB and AAB species than the other methods applied, which opened new frontiers for the understanding of the microbial communities involved during sourdough production processes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a 56-year-old man presented at our emergency department with fever and shortness of breath; Diffuse pulmonary nodular vascular spread lesions were found. Detailed history taking showed a four-week history of fever and night sweats. The man had been under treatment for 2 years with Adalimumab, a tumor-necrosis-factor (TNF) inhibitor, for ulcerative colitis. Before start, screening by tuberculin skin test was negative. Cultures en PCR on BAL and urine were positive for mycobacterium tuberculosis also ocular findings were present. The diagnosis of military tuberculosis was made.

Microbial strains for starter culture-initiated sourdough productions are commonly isolated from a fermenting flour–water mixture. Yet, starter culture strains isolated from matrices other than sourdoughs could provide the dough with interesting metabolic properties and hence change the organoleptic properties of the concomitant breads. Furthermore, the selection of sourdough starter cultures does not need to be limited to lactic acid bacteria (LAB), as other food-grade microorganisms are sometimes found in sourdoughs. Therefore, different strains belonging to LAB, acetic acid bacteria (AAB), and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) that originated from different fermented food matrices (fermenting cocoa pulp-bean mass, fermented sausage, and water kefir), were examined as to their prevalence in a wheat sourdough ecosystem during 72-h fermentations. Limosilactobacillus fermentum IMDO 222 (fermented cocoa pulp-bean mass isolate) and Latilactobacillus sakei CTC 494 (fermented sausage isolate) seemed to be promising candidates as sourdough starter culture strains, as were the AAB strains Acetobacter pasteurianus IMDO 386B and Gluconobacter oxydans IMDO A845 (both isolated from fermented cocoa pulp-bean mass), due to their competitiveness in the wheat flour-water mixtures. Wheat breads made with G. oxydans IMDO A845 sourdoughs were significantly darker than reference wheat breads.

Urgency is the prevalent and most bothersome symptom of overactive bladder (OAB) and the treatment of urgency is the primary objective in the management of OAB. Urgency has a major impact on other symptoms of OAB and culminates in an increased frequency of micturition and reduced volume voided, which may contribute to shorter intervals between the need to void. Antimuscarinic agents and mirabegron, a β 3 -adrenoceptor agonist, constitute the main oral pharmacotherapeutic options for the treatment of urgency and other OAB symptoms. The reduction of urgency and other OAB symptoms significantly improve health-related quality of life. This review will explore the distinct mechanisms of action and effects of antimuscarinic agents and mirabegron, in relation to their effect on the pathophysiology of urgency. The review will also provide an overview of the various validated measurements of urgency and the numerous clinical trials regarding antimuscarinic agent monotherapy, mirabegron monotherapy, or combination treatment with mirabegron added on to the antimuscarinic agent solifenacin. A narrative review of the literature relating to pathophysiology of urgency, the validated measurements of urgency, and clinical trials relating to the pharmacological treatment of urgency. Antimuscarinic agent monotherapy, mirabegron monotherapy, or combination treatment with mirabegron added on to the antimuscarinic agent solifenacin statistically significantly reduce the symptoms of urgency compared with placebo. Combination therapy with mirabegron added on to solifenacin also statistically significantly reduces the symptoms of severe urgency compared with antimuscarinic agent monotherapy. A critique of the clinical benefits of combination therapy is also provided. Combination therapy provides an alternative treatment in patients with OAB that includes urgency who respond poorly to first-line monotherapy and who may otherwise often move on to more invasive treatments.

The emergence of urinary retention (UR), specifically acute urinary retention (AUR), has been a concern when treating men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) with antimuscarinic drugs.In NEPTUNE (12-week, double-blind), men (≥45 years) with LUTS were randomized to receive tamsulosin oral-controlled absorption system (TOCAS) 0.4 mg, fixed-dose combination (FDC) of solifenacin (Soli) 6 mg + TOCAS 0.4 mg, FDC Soli 9 mg + TOCAS 0.4 mg, or placebo. In NEPTUNE II (40-week, open-label extension of NEPTUNE), continuing patients received 4-week FDC Soli 6 mg + TOCAS, then FDC Soli 6 mg or 9 mg + TOCAS for the remainder of the study, switchable every 3 months.Across both studies, 1208 men received ≥1 dose of FDC Soli 6 mg or 9 mg + TOCAS for up to 52 weeks; 1199 men completed NEPTUNE and 1066 received ≥1 dose in NEPTUNE II. In total, 13 men (1.1%; 95% CI, 0.6%-1.8%) reported a UR event while receiving FDC, eight of which were AUR (0.7%; 95% CI, 0.3%-1.3%, incidence 7/1000 man-years). Six men reported UR events while taking Soli 6 mg + TOCAS (three AUR), and seven men reported a UR event while taking Soli 9 mg + TOCAS (five AUR). One man developed AUR while taking TOCAS alone and four reported UR (three AUR) during placebo run-in. Most AUR/UR events occurred within 4 months of treatment initiation.FDC Soli and TOCAS was associated with a low rate of UR and AUR in men with LUTS.

Bromination reactions are crucial in today’s chemical industry since the versatility of the formed organobromides makes them suitable building blocks for numerous syntheses. However, the use of the toxic and highly reactive molecular bromine (Br2) makes these brominations very challenging and hazardous. We describe here a safe and straightforward protocol for bromination in continuous flow. The hazardous Br2 or KOBr is generated in situ by reacting an oxidant (NaOCl) with HBr or KBr, respectively, which is directly coupled to the bromination reaction and a quench of residual bromine. This protocol was demonstrated by polybrominating both alkenes and aromatic substrates in a wide variety of solvents, with yields ranging from 78% to 99%. The protocol can easily be adapted for the bromination of other substrates in an academic and industrial environment.

The whole-genome sequence of Bombella intestini LMG 28161T, an endosymbiotic acetic acid bacterium (AAB) occurring in bumble bees, was determined to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying its metabolic capabilities. The draft genome sequence of B. intestini LMG 28161T was 2.02 Mb. Metabolic carbohydrate pathways were in agreement with the metabolite analyses of fermentation experiments and revealed its oxidative capacity towards sucrose, D-glucose, D-fructose and D-mannitol, but not ethanol and glycerol. The results of the fermentation experiments also demonstrated that the lack of effective aeration in small-scale carbohydrate consumption experiments may be responsible for the lack of reproducibility of such results in taxonomic studies of AAB. Finally, compared to the genome sequences of its nearest phylogenetic neighbor and of three other insect associated AAB strains, the B. intestini LMG 28161T genome lost 69 orthologs and included 89 unique genes. Although many of the latter were hypothetical they also included several type IV secretion system proteins, amino acid transporter/permeases and membrane proteins which might play a role in the interaction with the bumble bee host.
