Abstract

State estimation allows to monitor power networks, exploiting field measurements to derive the most likely grid state. In the literature, measurement errors are usually assumed to follow zero-mean Gaussian distributions; however, it has been shown that this assumption often does not hold. One such example is when considering pseudo-measurements. In distribution networks, a significant amount of pseudo-measurements might be necessary, due to the scarcity of real-time measurements. In this paper, a state estimator is presented which allows to model measurement uncertainty with any continuous distribution, without approximations. This becomes possible by writing state estimation as a general maximum-likelihood estimation-based constrained optimization problem. To realistically describe distribution networks, three-phase unbalanced power flow equations are used. Results are presented that illustrate the differences in accuracy and computational effort between different uncertainty modeling methods, for the IEEE European Low Voltage Test Feeder.

Abstract

An unresolved issue in contemporary biomedicine is the overwhelming number and diversity of complex images that require annotation, analysis and interpretation. Recent advances in Deep Learning have revolutionized the field of computer vision, creating algorithms that compete with human experts in image segmentation tasks. Crucially however, these frameworks require large human-annotated datasets for training and the resulting models are difficult to interpret. In this study, we introduce Kartezio, a modular Cartesian Genetic Programming based computational strategy that generates transparent and easily interpretable image processing pipelines by iteratively assembling and parameterizing computer vision functions. The pipelines thus generated exhibit comparable precision to state-of-the-art Deep Learning approaches on instance segmentation tasks, while requiring drastically smaller training datasets, a feature which confers tremendous flexibility, speed, and functionality to this approach. We also deployed Kartezio to solve semantic and instance segmentation problems in four real-world Use Cases, and showcase its utility in imaging contexts ranging from high-resolution microscopy to clinical pathology. By successfully implementing Kartezio on a portfolio of images ranging from subcellular structures to tumoral tissue, we demonstrated the flexibility, robustness and practical utility of this fully explicable evolutionary designer for semantic and instance segmentation., Comment: 36 pages, 6 main Figures. 17. A Study of One State's School District Physical Restraint and Seclusion Policies

Abstract

This descriptive analysis of policy content examined local school district policies on physical restraint and seclusion in one Midwestern state that did not have state legislation on these topics to determine whether districts had policies and, if so, whether their content included recommended principles from the U.S. Department of Education. No previous research has addressed district policies. A maximum variation sample of 90 districts was examined to determine whether policies were in place, whether recommended principles were included, and whether policies varied based on student enrollment. Although almost all districts had policies, many of the federally recommended principles were not addressed across the sample and less than 10% of the district policies indicated that these procedures should only be used in the case of imminent danger of serious injury to self or others. District enrollment size did not affect policy, but the substance of the policy was determined by the districts' policy source from advising attorneys.

18. Phase Identification of Distribution System Users Through a MILP Extension of State Estimation

Abstract

To address the challenges and exploit the opportunities that the decarbonization of the energy sector is bringing about, advanced distribution network management and operation strategies are being developed. Many of these require accurate network models to work effectively, including user phase connectivity. However, such information is often not available. This paper proposes a novel method to identify the phase connectivity of single- and three-phase distribution consumers using smart meter measurements. The method is based on state estimation and mixed-integer linear programming, and requires shorter measurement collection times compared to statistical and machine learning-based techniques, for the same level of accuracy. Consequently, the duration of measurement efforts/campaigns aimed at obtaining this type of information reduces, accelerating the system knowledge acquisition process and potentially reducing the campaigns' costs. A technique is illustrated that allows to solve large networks in acceptable time despite the considerable number of integer variables. Extensive computational results are presented for publicly available low voltage feeders.

19. Congestion Mitigation in Unbalanced Residential Networks with OPF-based Demand Management

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel congestion mitigation strategy for low voltage residential feeders in which the rising power demand due to the electrification of the transport and heating systems leads to congestion problems. The strategy is based on requiring residential customers to limit their demand for a certain amount of time in exchange for economic benefits. The main novelty of the method consists of combining a thorough representation of the network physics with advanced constraints that ensure the comfort of residential users, in a scalable manner that suits real systems. The mitigation strategy is presented from a DSO perspective, and takes the form of contracts between users and system operator. The focus on user comfort aims to make the contracts appealing, encouraging users to voluntarily enroll in the proposed mitigation scheme. The presented solution is implemented as a mixed-integer multi-period optimal power flow problem which relies on a linearized three-phase power flow formulation. Calculations on 100 real-life distribution feeders are performed, to analyze the congestion-relieving potential of several possible system operator-user contracts. From a planning perspective, the results can help the system operator define contractual terms that make a specific congestion mitigation scheme effective and viable. From an operational perspective, the same calculations can be used to optimally schedule power reduction on a day-ahead basis.

Abstract

State estimation plays a key role in the transition from the passive to the active operation of distribution systems, as it allows to monitor these networks and, successively, to perform control actions. However, designing state estimators for distribution systems carries a significant amount of challenges. This is due to the physical complexity of the networks, e.g., phase unbalance, and limited measurements. Furthermore, the features of the distribution system present significant local variations, e.g., voltage level and number and type of customers, which makes it hard to design a "one-size-fits-all" state estimator. The present paper introduces a unifying framework that allows to easily implement and compare diverse unbalanced static state estimation models. This is achieved by formulating state estimation as a general constrained optimization problem. The advantages of this approach are described and supported by numerical illustration on a large set of distribution feeders. The framework is also implemented and made available open-source.

Abstract

Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is a chronic fungal infection of the lung associated with high morbidity and mortality. The CPA Research network (CPAnet) registry established in 2018 is an international multicenter collaboration aiming to improve CPA knowledge and patient care. This study's aim was to describe the data collection process and content of CPAnet registry with preliminary clinical data. In the CPAnet registry, clinical data are collected through a web-based questionnaire. Data include CPA phenotype, comorbidities, treatment, outcome, and follow-up from several international centers. An exemplary descriptive analysis was performed on 74 patients, who were registered online before April 2020. CPA patients were predominantly (72%) male, 39% had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and 68% had a history of smoking. Chronic cavitary pulmonary aspergillosis was the most common CPA subtype (62%). In 32 patients (52%), voriconazole was the preferred first-line therapy. The multicenter multinational CPAnet registry is a valuable approach to gather comprehensive data on a large study population and reflects real-world clinical practice rather than focusing on specific patient populations in more specialized centers. Additional CPA reference centers are being encouraged to join this promising clinical research collaboration.

30. A Framework to Design for Meaning: Insights on Use, Practicality and Added Value within a Project-Based Learning Context

Abstract

Desired affordances and appropriate product semantics are important when considering products that are easy to use and easy to understand. Despite affordances and product semantics being taught in some design educations, many designers in industry do not explicitly consider affordances nor product semantics during the design process. This is partly due to the lack of a framework that supports the considerations for affordances and product semantics during the design process. As a consequence, many designers rely on their own intuition, and this can be problematic. To avoid the potential negative effects of relying on intuition, we designed a framework to support the designer in explicitly considering affordances and applying product semantics during product design. This framework was used by undergraduate students in product design engineering during a 12-week product design assignment. In this paper we present the framework, examples of how it was used and how it was evaluated by the students. We finally discuss the findings within the context of design for meaning and project-based learning.

31. Does Successful Use of Digital Learning Materials Predict Teachers' Intention to Use Them Again in the Future?

Abstract

Do perceptions of success in using digital learning materials (DLMs) "regularly" (i.e., several times a week) strengthen (or weaken) teachers' behavioural intentions to use DLMs again? And which psychological factors have a relationship with the intention to use DLMs again? These questions are important in light of stimulating teachers' use of DLMs. To answer this question, teacher "flows" were analysed using crosstabs and multinomial logistic regression. These flows visualize how teachers go from a certain degree of perceived success to a certain strength of behavioural intention. Second, Hayes (2013) process method and structured equation modeling (SEM) techniques were applied to determine the mediating role of attitude, perceived norm, and perceived behavioural control of perceived success on the behavioural intention. The results suggested that the teachers' strength in behavioural intention was in accordance with their perceived success for the case that their self-prediction was positive but that this strength became weaker when teachers' self-prediction was negative. Attitude and perceived norm mediated the effects only when self-prediction was positive whereas perceived behaviour control did this in both cases. Also, there was a direct effect between perceived success and behavioural intention. It is important that teachers get a chance to experience success with the use of DLMs, enabled either by school leaders (regarding in-service teachers) or by teacher training institutions (regarding pre-service teachers). Only then we will see teachers' willingness to use DLMs on a "regular" basis to grow.

34. Impact of User Involvement on Design Students' Motivation and Self-Confidence

Abstract

Involvement of users in the design process is generally viewed favourably, both within academia and industry. Their involvement can be seen as a strategy for designers to clarify their design task and reduce uncertainties in the design process. Simultaneously, there is a lack of understanding about the impact that user involvement has on students and how they experience doing so. This paper reports on a study where students were asked to self-report their motivation and self-confidence throughout a design exercise, stretching 11 days, with surveys repeating daily. Additionally, students were asked to indicate which--if any--strategies of user involvement they used every day. We find that students self-reported motivation did not change statistically significantly, while self-confidence did change. However, in neither case did student's involvement of end-users impact how motivated or self-confident they were. We discuss our results in relation to existing research on method use in general and user involvement in particular and conclude with some suggestions for future work.

37. Cellular Automata Simulation on FPGA for Training Neural Networks with Virtual World Imagery

Abstract

We present ongoing work on a tool that consists of two parts: (i) A raw micro-level abstract world simulator with an interface to (ii) a 3D game engine, translator of raw abstract simulator data to photorealistic graphics. Part (i) implements a dedicated cellular automata (CA) on reconfigurable hardware (FPGA) and part (ii) interfaces with a deep learning framework for training neural networks. The bottleneck of such an architecture usually lies in the fact that transferring the state of the whole CA significantly slows down the simulation. We bypass this by sending only a small subset of the general state, which we call a 'locus of visibility', akin to a torchlight in a darkened 3D space, into the simulation. The torchlight concept exists in many games but these games generally only simulate what is in or near the locus. Our chosen architecture will enable us to simulate on a micro level outside the locus. This will give us the advantage of being able to create a larger and more fine-grained simulation which can be used to train neural networks for use in games., Comment: Published as a short paper at IEEE CIG2017

Abstract

This paper describes a successful attempt to combine two relatively new technologies: Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) and the programming language Go, achieved by extending the existing Go network library with SCTP. SCTP is a reliable, message-oriented transport layer protocol, similar to TCP and UDP. It offers sequenced delivery of messages over multiple streams, network fault tolerance via multihoming support, resistance against flooding and masquerade attacks and congestion avoidance procedures. It has improvements over wider-established network technologies and is gradually gaining traction in the telecom and Internet industries. Go is an open source, concurrent, statically typed, compiled and garbage-collected language, developed by Google Inc. Go's main design goals are simplicity and ease of use and it has a syntax broadly similar to C. Go has good support for networked and multicore computing and as a system language is often used for networked applications, however it doesn't yet support SCTP. By combining SCTP and Go, software engineers can exploit the advantages of both technologies. 49. A Descriptive Analysis of District Restraint and Seclusion Documentation and Data-Driven Decision Making

Abstract

Restraint and seclusion are two crisis intervention practices that educators employ to manage students who display escalated behavior. These procedures, however, are high-risk, intensive practices that have resulted in psychological trauma, physical injury, and even death. While there are no federal laws in place on this topic, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) recommended 15 principles to guide state and local school districts' development of policies and practices for the use of restraint and seclusion. Schools and mental health organizations that have effectively reduced or eliminated their use of these aversive practices have identified documentation and decision-making based on these data to drive practice and policy change as integral components to their success. Despite federal reporting requirements of school use of restraint and seclusion, a recent audit conducted by the U. S. Government Accountability Office found many school districts are not collecting and accurately reporting these data even when located in states that mandate these procedures. Thus, the extent to which these potentially harmful practices are employed across the nation's public schools is unknown. A descriptive research design was employed to explore the crisis incident documentation review, oversight, and data-driven decision-making procedures enacted within a sample of four public-school sites that resided in one state that had restraint and seclusion legislation in place. The benefits and barriers to completing these practices as reported by district personnel who were charged with these responsibilities was addressed. A secondary purpose of the study was to explore the quality of school district crisis incident documentation and the degree to which the documentation aligned with the DOE recommendations. Descriptive statistics and thematic analyses were conducted to explore the nature of these phenomena. Results of the study indicated minimal monitoring, oversight, and data-based decision making occurred across the four sites and that the procedures enacted by each district site varied despite having similar policies in place. In addition, while each district's crisis incident documentation obtained most of the DOE components, the extent to which the components were reported within the documentation was insufficient to allow for meaningful review and decision-making. Findings from this study provide initial insight of how public-school districts employ restraint and seclusion and their efforts in managing these practices. Furthermore, the findings provide valuable information for future policy development, research interests, and areas of support to aide districts in maintaining a safe environment for all students.
