Abstract

The proliferation of digital technologies in the distribution of digital content has prompted concerns about the effects on cultural diversity in the digital era. The concept of discoverability has been presented as a theoretical tool through which to consider the likelihood that content will be interacted with. The multifaceted nature of this broad theme has been explored through a variety of domains that explore the ripple effects of platformization, each with its own unique lexicography. However, there is yet to be a unified framework through which to consider the complex pathways of discovery. In this work we present the discovery ecosystem, consisting of six individual, interconnected components, that encompass the pathway of discovery from start to finish

2. Effect of mobile app-based oral hygiene instructions on clinical parameters, oral bacterial diversity, and composition of subgingival microbiota in periodontitis patients

Abstract

Introduction Oral hygiene instruction (OHI) is essential during periodontitis treatment. Various OHI approaches have been explored, including mobile apps.Objective To evaluate the mobile app-based OHI’s effect on periodontitis management by analyzing clinical parameters and subgingival microbiota.Methods Forty-four periodontitis patients were randomly assigned into two groups. The test group (n = 22) received scaling and root planing (SRP), OHI, and mobile app-based OHI, whereas the control group (n = 22) received SRP and OHI. Full mouth plaque score (FMPS), bleeding on probing (BOP) and probing pocket depth at the sampling sites (site-PPD) were assessed at baseline, one- and three-month visits. The 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to analyze subgingival plaque samples.Results Significant reduction in FMPS, BOP, and site-PPD at one- and three-month visits compared to baseline (p 0.05). In test groups, intra-group analysis showed better improvement in BOP and site-PPD (p 0.05).Conclusions Mobile app-based OHI showed no superior effects on improving clinical parameters and subgingival microbiota compared to conventional OHI. Further investigation into its long-term impact on periodontitis treatment is needed.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the clinical, cognitive, and psychomotor changes that emerged among patients with gingivitis and patients with periodontitis via mobile application assistance. Forty subjects were randomly and evenly distributed into test and control groups and were administered a professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR) procedure. The clinical parameters examined were bleeding on probing (BoP), probing pocket depth (PPD), and the oral hygiene index (OHI-S). The test group was administered a mobile application intervention, namely PerioUICare, which provided users with continuous education and motivation and served as a daily dental hygiene reminder. The comparative results of the mean values of all parameters between the groups (inter-group) and within the groups (intra-group) after one- and three-month evaluations were analyzed. A one-month inter-group evaluation uncovered significant differences in the BoP, PPD, cognitive, and psychomotor scores of subjects with gingivitis and the BoP, OHI-S, cognitive, and psychomotor scores of subjects with periodontitis. A three-month inter-group evaluation revealed significant differences across all parameters except for PPD in subjects with periodontitis. The results of the intra-group comparison demonstrated statistically significant differences in all parameters in the test group but no significant differences in the cognitive and psychomotor scores of the control group. This study revealed that mobile application-based support for periodontal treatment can be considered effective.

Abstract

La telemedicina describe la entrega electrónica de datos médicos para diagnóstico, tratamiento y educación médica al paciente en el hogar mediante el uso de tecnologías de información y comunicación. En pocas semanas, la situación mundial actual relacionada con COVID-19 ha generado presiones sin precedentes en el sistema de salud y ha transformado la práctica de cuidados paliativos. El programa de visita domiciliar del Centro Nacional de Control del Dolor y Cuidados Paliativos adoptó la modalidad de teleconsulta en marzo 2020 y se estableció un plan piloto de evaluación de la tecnología de telemonitoreo. Durante el periodo inicial de evaluación comprendido entre marzo y julio 2020, un médico especialista en Medicina Paliativa revisó los signos vitales dentro de las 24 horas posteriores a la transmisión y realizó una teleconsulta al paciente permitiendo analizar los datos recibidos. En total 14 pacientes fueron monitorizados durante un promedio de 10.2 ± 3.7 días para un total de 143 días de monitoreo multiparamétrico y 3432 horas monitoreo. Los resultados preliminares de este estudio sugieren un efecto positivo en el control de síntomas, la satisfacción del paciente, la educación del personal y la comunicación entre los miembros del equipo.

Abstract

El manejo adecuado de síntomas en pacientes terminales permite a los pacientes y a sus seres queridos el espacio para resolver asuntos emocionales, psicológicos y espirituales. La disnea es un problema frecuente para los pacientes con condiciones terminales, y con estrategias clínicas efectivas puede aliviarse el síntoma, en la mayoría de los casos. El manejo sintomático puede llevarse a cabo concomitantemente con la corrección de la causa de fondo cuando esté justificada, y aunque los opioides son la terapia farmacológica de primera línea, el oxígeno suplementario y las benzodiacepinas pueden ser coadyuvantes cuando se encuentren indicados. En los casos refractarios a tratamiento, la sedación puede ser apropiada. Se realiza una revisión sobre el manejo óptimo de la disnea en pacientes con condiciones terminales, con base en la evidencia reciente más relevante.Proper management of symptoms allows terminal patients and their loved onesfamily the time to resolve emotional, psychological and spiritual issues. Dyspnea is a common problem for patients with terminal conditions and effective clinical strategies can relieve symptoms in most cases. Symptomatic management can be carried out concomitantly with the correction of the underlying cause when justified, although opioids are the first line of drug therapy, supplemental oxygen and benzodiazepines may help when they are indicated. In cases which are refractory to treatment sedation may be appropriate. We review in this paper the optimal management of dyspnea in patients with terminal conditions based on the most relevant recent evidence.

Abstract

La ultrasonografía en el punto de atención es una modalidad de evaluación ecográfica limitada llevada al paciente y realizada por un proveedor en tiempo real como complemento de la evaluación y razonamiento clínicos, con el objetivo de lograr un diagnóstico y tratamiento adecuado para situaciones específicas. El ultrasonido en el punto de atención por proveedores no radiólogos ha adquirido gran relevancia en medios austeros o de baja disponibilidad de recursos como en las zonas rurales, debido a su accesibilidad, portabilidad, seguridad y confiabilidad en situaciones específicas. Esta modalidad de imágenes ha logrado consolidarse en la evaluación diagnóstica y como método de guía de procedimientos percutáneos. Esta revisión pretende introducir las ventajas de las aplicaciones en el punto de atención de la ultrasonografía y presentar ejemplos de su relevancia en ambientes austeros.

Abstract

full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Details of the mechanical prototype line, the electromechanical cable and data acquisition are presented. Data taken during the immersion study revealed deficiencies in the pressure resistance of the electromechanical cable terminations at the entry points to the electronics containers. The improvements to the termination, which have been integrated into subsequent detection lines, are discussed. The line also allowed deep-sea acoustic measurements with a prototype hydrophone system. The technical setup of this system is described, and the first results of the data analysis are presented. 13. Impacts of AI on Music Consumption and Fairness

Abstract

The algorithmic systems utilized by music streaming services have the potential to positively influence individual choices by promoting new artists, but they are also often accused of perpetuating biases. In this research note, we aim to explore the impact of these platforms’ AI-based algorithms on fairness in music consumption. To address this question, we adopt a multidimensional approach that considers the legal, economic, and algorithmic dimensions of fairness. This approach is applied to our EU Horizon Europe Fair MusE project, which advocates for a fairer music ecosystem. However, it should be noted that we propose a tool to score output (playlists) based on fairness models instead of directly altering the algorithms. Data from end users, data brokers, and open-source databases will inform the model, while the processing of the data is aimed at providing users with insights into algorithmic biases and empower them to influence the output. Acknowledging this aspect, this research note serves as a prelude to highlight the need for increased transparency and explainability of algorithms. Furthermore, we seek to inform policy interventions that promote fairness, particularly regarding data sharing between creators and platform providers. Such interventions would foster trust among stakeholders and benefit both users and businesses.

Abstract

[EN] The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the Geyser technique for dark matter search. The results of the first 0.5 kg mass prototype detector using superheated C3F8 liquid were very encouraging, achieving a 5 keV nuclear recoil threshold with high insensitivity to gamma radiation. Additionally, the technique seems to be easily scalable to higher masses for both in terms of complexity and costs, resulting in a very competitive technique for direct dark matter search, especially for the spin dependent case. Here, we report as well in the construction and commissioning of the big detector of 40 kg at the Milano-Bicocca University. The detector, the calibration tests and the evaluation of the background will be presented. Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is being constructed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a large three-dimensional array of photo-multiplier tubes. The data acquisition system of the detector takes care of the digitisation of the photo-multiplier tube signals, data transport, data filtering, and data storage. The detector is operated using a control program interfaced with all elements. Abstract

ANTARES is a neutrino telescope being deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a three dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes that can detect the Cherenkov light induced by charged particles produced in the interactions of neutrinos with the surrounding medium. High angular resolution can be achieved, in particular when a muon is produced, provided that the Cherenkov photons are detected with sufficient timing precision. Considerations of the intrinsic time uncertainties stemming from the transit time spread in the photomultiplier tubes and the mechanism of transmission of light in sea water lead to the conclusion that a relative time accuracy of the order of 0.5 ns is desirable. Accordingly, different time calibration systems have been developed for the ANTARES telescope. In this article, a system based on Optical Beacons, a set of external and well-controlled pulsed light sources located throughout the detector, is described. This calibration system takes into account the optical properties of sea water, which is used as the detection volume of the ANTARES telescope. Abstract

In 2005, the ANTARES Collaboration deployed and operated at a depth of 2500 m a so-called Mini Instrumentation Line equipped with Optical Modules (MILOM) at the ANTARES site. The various data acquired during the continuous operation from April to December 2005 of the MILOM confirm the satisfactory performance of the Optical Modules, their front-end electronics and readout system, as well as the calibration devices of the detector. The in-situ measurement of the Optical Module time response yields a resolution better than 0.5 ns. The performance of the acoustic positioning system, which enables the spatial reconstruction of the ANTARES detector with a precision of about 10 cm, is verified. These results demonstrate that with the full ANTARES neutrino telescope the design angular resolution of better than $0.3^\circ$ can be realistically achieved., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, to be immersed depth in the Mediterranean Sea, will consist of a 3 dimensional matrix of 900 large area photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure resistant glass spheres. The selection of the optimal photomultiplier was a critical step for the project and required an intensive phase of tests and developments carried out in close collaboration with the main manufacturers worldwide. Abstract

Objective of this study is to investigate the effect of daily consumption of Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730 containing probiotic lozenges on salivary Streptococcus mutans serotype c, Streptococcus sobrinus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans number, in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliance. Saliva subject collected before and two weeks after daily probiotic consumption. S. mutans serotype c, S. sobrinus, P. gingivalis ATCC 33277, and A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 29522 were cultured in BHI-broth (anaerobic-condition). After 48-h incubation, the number of colonies on each dilution plate were used to extrapolate a standard curve. Bacterial DNA were extracted using heat-shock method. Subsequently, quantitative Real-Time PCR method was applied to analyse the number of S. mutans serotype c, S. sobrinus, P. gingivalis, and A. actinomycetemcomitans in saliva. Total number of DNA target were identified using SYBR Green (Applied Biosystem) and 16S rRNA gene specific primers for each bacterium tested. The research results showed that there was significant difference in the average scores of S. mutans serotype, S. sobrinus, P. gingivalis, and A. actinomycetemcomitans before probiotic consumption compared to two weeks after probiotic consumption. The results show that probiotic L. reuteri ATCC-55730 brought a statistically significant reduction of S. mutans serotype c, S. sobrinus, P. gingivalis, and A. actinomycetemcomitans after two weeks consumption of probiotic in fixed orthodontic patients (P< 0.05). It is concluded that L. reuteri ATCC 55730-containing probiotic lozenges consumption reduces the number of S. mutans serotype c, S. sobrinus, P. gingivalis, and A. actinomycetemcomitans in saliva subjects during fixed orthodontic appliances. Abstract

Recently the ANTARES Neutrino telescope's Infrastructure in the deep Mediterranean Sea, has been extended by a Secondary Junction Box. The main emphasis has been to provide basic power and communications capability for new scientific cabled observatories. This new infrastructure provides unprecedented amounts of power and two-way bandwidth to access and control instrument networks in the oceans. This new development allows cabled observatory to connect the seafloor to the Internet via real-time, two-way highspeed communications. This design gives researchers new capabilities beyond the reach of traditional oceanography. Ocean scientists can run deep-water experiments from labs and universities anywhere around the world. Three different underwater observatories are already been connected at this Secondary Junction Box. This paper presents this new Infrastructure which has been deployed by the R/V Pourquoi Pas? and connected by the IFREMER's ROV VICTOR6000. After a technical description of the system, we detailled an overview of the complete deployment at sea.

Abstract

Deep Sea Net is a new concept of deep sea sensor network built from fiber optic micro cable and battery operated IP access nodes. Deep Sea Net fiber optic transport segments are deployed directly from a standard ROV, avoiding the use of a costly cable layer ship. Deployment skid is abandoned on user site ready to connect local sensors and next transport segment. Deep Sea Net is a low consumption network which can be waked on user (or sensor) demand. Lithium batteries and fine power management will give 10 years of autonomy with 1/4 of hour operation per day. The innovative approach of Deep Sea Net will permit to build, extend and maintain future sensor networks at very competitive prices.

Abstract

The ANTARES deep sea neutrino telescope, under construction off the French Mediterranean coast, will contain 900 photomultiplier tubes arranged along 12 moored detection lines. The detector is powered and read out via an underwater junction box hub and a telecommunications cable linking the site to the shore station. The junction box contains the power delivery and management system and the fibreoptic routing for all the clock and data signals for the detector. Power distribution is based on a transformer with 18 independent secondary windings. Electrical energy in the range 3700 to 4100 V AC from the shore station is transformed from 435 to 480 V AC to power the detection lines and from 200 to 230 V for the junction box slow control electronics. An external plugboard of deep sea-mateable electro-optic connectors allows the connection of up to sixteen detection lines or oceanographic packages using manned or remotely operated submersible vehicles. The triply-redundant power management and slow control system of the junction box is based on two distinct technologies; two identical systems powered from the internal transformer communicate with the shore through fibreoptic 160 Mb/s G-links while a third battery-powered system communicates through a low power, low speed link. We describe the power and slow control systems of the underwater junction box hub. Data from nearly three years' continuous operation of the slow control system are also presented.

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, currently under construction at 2500 in depth off the French Mediterranean coast, will contain 12 detection lines, powered and read out through a deep-sea junction box (JB) hub. Electrical energy from the shore station is distributed through a transformer with multiple secondary windings and a plugboard with 16 deep sea-mateable electro-optic connectors. Connections are made to the JB outputs using manned or remotely operated submersible vehicles. The triply redundant power management and slow control system is based on two identical AC-powered systems, communicating with the shore through 160 Mb/s fibre G-links and a third battery-powered system using a slower link. Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for blue (UV) light are found to be lambda_abs ~ 60(26) m, lambda_sct^eff ~ 265(122) m, with significant (15%) time variability. Finally, the results of ANTARES simulations showing the effect of these water properties on the anticipated performance of the detector are presented., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures (including 4 available as separate figures), to be published in Astroparticle Physics
